A cityscape stretches for an infinite number of miles in every direction, with skyscrapers and towers breaking the horizon.

Static fills the sky like an empty television screen, with the light of the sun replaced by a mocking grey tone. The lights of the city seem like fireflies, winking in and out, an urban body with buildings as organs.

A small girl with a blue flower growing from her eye sits on a cube, which is covered in test cards, the kind you see sometimes on television. The cubes float above a sea of sharp triangles and pyramids of many colors that extend far below you. She stares, observing you silently.

Maybe it's more correct to say that she never existed at all.

She mouths three words. You can't tell what they are.

>>
>Last time:

>"Just your friendly neighborhood college student that knows your secret. If you and your partner are willing to talk peacefully, I'll buy you folks a drink." She stares at you, her eyes sparkling in wonder, and she nods fiercely.

>"Lou! Are you alright!?" Jess runs over to you as the walk signal turns on, and you nod at her.

>"Yeah, I'm fine. She's alright too." You let the girl out of your arms, and she stumbles a bit, still looking at you with a subtle blush.

>"You scared the shit out of us, dude!" You smile at him, and he smiles back. Somehow, it all ended up alright.

>Puca looks at you with a strangely disappointed expression, but then sighs and smiles at you.

>"Good job, my king." She helps you to your feet.

>"I'll go ask Dad." With a chirp, the girl you saved runs over to the car and knocks on the window. The window rolls down, and she talks to someone inside. In just a few seconds, the engine of the car turns off, and the car door opens.

>"Thank you for saving my daughter. She said that you wanted to talk to me, so why don't I get you all something to drink down there?" The man's voice is gritty and hardened as he gestures to a small restaurant down the street.

>But you don't respond immediately. You have to use all your strength from keeping your jaw from dropping to the floor.

>Because the man speaking to you is Meinart Jensen, your idol.

>FIN #6

You stare at him in wonder, then begin to follow him as he leads the way to the restaurant. You notice absentmindedly that it's a small place, the kind that you could find hundreds of nearby. Did he pick this place because it was close, or because it was special somehow?

Puca and the other girl keep close to you, while Jess and Marc wander along behind them. Puca seems on-edge somehow, biting her lower lip. Meanwhile, the other girl still seems fascinated with you, staring at you.

The restaurant isn't far away though, and before long Meinart is opening the door for you all. You thank him graciously, while the girl completely ignores him. Puca thanks him tersely, while Jess and Marc do so awkwardly.

Soon enough you're all sitting at a table, with you, Puca and Jess on one side with Marc, Meinart and the girl on the other.

"Again, I have to thank you for saving my daughter, so you can consider this on me." He extends his hand out to you. "My name is Meinart Jensen."

"Y-Yes, I've heard of your work. I'm a big fan, really." He blinks a few times, surprised.

"Really? Not many people I've talked to know me before I mention what I've worked on. I'm flattered." He smiles a little at you.

Marc and Jess squirm a little, while Puca continues to bite her lower lip.

"Yes sir, I happen to be an artist myself, and you're a really big inspiration to my work." You reply. "In fact, one of the reasons that I came to this city was when I heard that you were teaching at one of the colleges here."

"Oh, that's right. About a year ago, I was teaching at Statham, wasn't I?" He says.

"Yeah, but right before I got here, you left. If you don't mind me asking sir, why did you leave?" You ask him, and his eyes drop. It takes him a minute before he can answer you.

"I was having family troubles at the time. They aren't quite resolved yet, so my work has been put on hold until they are." He answers quite plainly, almost robotically.

He stops, and the conversation stops with him. An awkward pause settles over the table.

"But yeah, Lou here is seriously a huge fan of yours." Marc cuts in, smiling at Meinart. "I'm not into art, but he's told me all about the stuff you've done. I think I remember you talking about a garden piece you had done, like a still-life or something?" He starts talking about some of the pieces that Meinart has done, and he replies enthusiastically, clearly happy to end the pause and talk about some of the work he's done.

Puca continues to bite her bottom lip, and she hasn't said a single thing yet. Meanwhile, the girl on the opposite side of the table as you keeps trying to engage you in conversation.

"So, are you from around here?" She asks, her eyes still glittering.

"Mr. Meinart..." You start, and he turns from Marc to you.

"Yes?" He replies, a bit more cheerful than before.

"There are a few delicate questions that I need to ask you, while we're here." His expression sours a bit.

"I think I know what you want to talk about, in that case. But should we, in present company?" He makes no gestures, but you know that he means Jess and Marc.

"Don't worry about them. They know." He nods, sighing.

"Alright. Then as a nod to your efforts before, I'll answer some of your questions. Only a few, though. You'll soon find that information is at a premium in the War." He looks at you dead-on, with an aura of seriousness.

"Then my first question will be this: Are all the zombies around here meant to smoke me out? Because you succeeded, in a way." He looks at you for a second, then replies.

"Yes. We knew someone was around here, and we were going to try to disable your Shadow before we tried to make contact with you. That, however, proved to be more difficult than I expected." He says.

(1/2)
>>
"Then the dragon from before was a part of that?" You ask.

"What dragon?" He says, asking you.

"The giant dragon with the cow skull." You clarify, and he smiles.

"Yes. That is a part of my Shadow's abilities." He stops, laughing a little. "And as a bit of charity to the newbie, as it were, I have some advice for you. Be very, very careful what you say to someone that has a Shadow. For example, I can posit that you live around here, from the way you said 'smoke me out'. And second, I can reason that the Shadow we fought the other day was your Shadow. Both of these pieces of information are more valuable than you think." You stare at him for a moment.

"How long have you been in the War?" He asks. Couldn't hurt to tell the truth, if this guy is giving out advice.

"Two days." Immediately, he snorts.

"Then in kind, I will tell you that I have been doing this for three months." You blink in surprise. How long has this War been going on?

"And you have a lot to learn, my friend." He says. "First of which is this: Do you know who your Shadow is yet?"

"Are you holding up over there, Puca? Is anything wrong?" You ask.

"No, this is just unexpected on my part." She replies.

"Are you sensing anything from either of them?" You ask.

"No, not right now." She says mentally, and you turn your attention back to Meinart.

"Well, yes and no." You reply to Meinart. "My Shadow is the part of me that I hide from others, or something that I'm repressing." You say.

"Well, then either she hasn't been telling you the whole story, or she doesn't know herself." He looks at Puca briefly, before turning his gaze back to you, making sure to keep his voice down.

"Shadows are not only the part of you that you are hiding from the world, but also something else. Shadows are also a representation, or an interpretation of a legend. Usually, a Shadow is a legendary creature of some kind or a monster. There are also Shadows that are not monsters, but mythological figures that come from legends or fairy tales. However, there is one trait amongst Shadows that is common: not one of them has ever been a force for good. All of them are, to a one, evil." You glance at Puca for a second, contacting her mentally.

"Why didn't you tell me this?" You ask her mentally.

"I didn't know." She replies quickly.

"That, my friend, is why information is so valuable in the War. Most mythological monsters had weaknesses, and the Shadows that represent them carry those weaknesses as well. If you can find that weakness and exploit it, you can more easily get to their human." He explains.

"Now, since you've done me a large favor, and since you seem to be very fresh to this, I would like to propose something." He extends a hand across the table, slowly.

"An alliance, in short. As you probably know, we are not the only ones in this War. Two of us, with our Shadows combined, would be more formidable than one. I can teach you more about the War, and in exchange you can use your Shadow's abilities to help me achieve my goals. Would that be agreeable to you?" He asks, very businesslike.

Well, I must admit that I would be interested in an alliance, for reasons that are somewhat obvious. However, I'm still hesitant. For one, if you wish an alliance, chances are you've met some of the others. I would like to know who you've established relations with, for one. For another, I would like to have a guarantee that you will not pry into my reasons for joining, something that extends to you as well, obviously. Immediately, you contact Puca mentally. "What do you think?" She continues to chew on her bottom lip.

"Right now, I think it's our best option. We should be very careful of betrayal, though. He knows more than us, and he's going to use it to his advantage." You turn back to Meinart.

"I might be interested." You reply. "But there's a lot of things I want to know first." You stop for a second.

"Then please, ask away." He says.

"First, who have you met with? Is there anyone else in this alliance?" You ask.

"At the current time, it would just be you and I." He replies. "However, as for who else I have made contact with..." He pauses for a second, thinking.

"There's Jack, who I have no doubt you've met. His human seems to have a strategy of holing up in a hiding place and sending his Shadow out to disable people before bringing them back to him. So far I haven't been able to locate his hiding place, but I intended to start that search tonight." He says.

"Then there's the man with the lion, who also seems to be a wild card. He likes to hide as well, although sometimes he tries to follow Jack back to his master. Then there are two others, a child and a man who seem to have made an alliance amongst themselves. And near them is the army of masked men. They're on the other side of the city, so I don't associate with them much." He says.

(1/2)
>>
"Thanks. And before I join you, I'd like to see what you do in the Hour, so I can judge for myself the kind of person you are." You say.

"I find no problem with that. As I've said, I intend to search for Jack's human, so if you'd like you can join me in that." The girl besides him smiles widely, excited.

"We'll see." You answer. He laughs.

"You're learning." He says, getting up from the table. "Now, I have to prepare for a talk that I'll be giving at a nearby campus tomorrow, so I'll have to bid you all goodbye. Izzy?" He calls for the girl next to him, and she gets up, walking along beside him reluctantly.

"Wait a second." You stop Meinart before he fully gets up. "Just one last question."

"Yes?" He asks.

"Do you know anything Hour-related about nails? Nails. Plural." You ask him, with a meaningful look.

He pauses for a second, bringing his hand to his chin. He thinks.

"Nails... Nothing concrete comes to mind. However, I can tell you this." He says.

"Last month, my Shadow was exploring the outskirts of the city near the bridge." You know the bridge he's talking about, there's only one in the city.

"One of her zombies was killed by a nail through the head. A large nail, almost like a railway spike." Your eyes widen.

Because that's a fitting description for the nails that were used in that incident, a year ago.

Then that confirms it, you decide. That serial killer must have a connection to the Hour, somehow.

"Thanks. Is there anything else you know? It's really important." He shakes his head.

"No, sorry. And if you'll excuse me, I must be going." The girl beside him waves to you as they exit the restaurant.

"Anyway, I'll head home for a bit to grab some stuff. We'll meet you at your place in... two hours? Yeah, that sounds good." Jess says, and you nod at her. "Marc, meet us then, alright?"

"Alright. See you then." He waves you goodbye, and before long Jess splits off from you as well.

Your thoughts are consumed with the thoughts of the serial killer. Now that you've got a lead on him, however small it is, you need to do something about it. But you can't be too hasty. If you go in now, you'll be in severe danger. You have to do your research first.

So, you hop onto the computer and start your research. The only two things you can think of right now are crucifixions and nails-- so that's where you start. Doing some research for two hours, you come up with some information.

First and foremost, the most famous crucifixion in human history: the death of Jesus Christ. If you know anything about Christianity, you know that Jesus died on the cross. Looking around, you find some basic arguments that the crucifixion was copied from either Norse mythology, with Odin, or Egyptian mythology with Horus. They both look like badly researched theories though, so you dismiss them for now.

Second, you look more deeply into the nails. You find a legend about the blacksmiths who made those nails. God curses the blacksmiths to eternally wander the earth as punishment for making those nails. You also find a page detailing a theory that one of the nails that crucified Jesus was forged into the Lance of Longinus. Finally, another myth that mentions an Etruscan goddess named Nortia, for whom nails were a prominent symbol, and a ritual involving nails that relates to her.

But more intriguingly, you find several news reports on a Japanese website that describe crimes similar to the one you were witness to. Two victims, one of them a young girl and the other a young boy, both teenagers. Not only that, they're dated not too long ago. The girl about six months ago and the boy about two months ago.

But after that, two hours are up, and before long you hear a knock at your door. It's Jess and Marc, and they've brought some of their stuff over.

"Hey, we said we would come help, didn't we?" Jess says.

Over the next hour, you discuss what exactly you're going to do with Jess and Marc. Both of them agree with your opinion on the serial killer-- you can't go after him yet.

hangon, what happened to the Art Talk in the other college? Oh right, that's the next day. Will be funny to tell him that we're still excited to be there.

It's definitely not Longinus, and it seems odd for the blacksmith theory, since nails are being used on OTHER people, rather than "punishing" the blacksmiths. Nortia needs more research.

As for possible weaknesses: we definitely don't want to be Pilate. I guess we could look for anti-spear symbols, or just plain bucklers?
Rust will probably be painful to the shadow. Is there a chemical rust concoction we can cook up in a spray can?

The crucifixion interest suggests Christian, but the latest murders make me wonder... Locate more murders with similar methods of disposal. Write note to self wondering why the killer didn't just go for the much more painful route of crucifying his victims with rope or copper wire.

"Okay, then we're coming with you." You flinch for a second at Jess's statement.

"Seriously? You guys are in danger already, and you want to come along?" They both nod emphatically.

"Of course. You're in the same danger, you know." She says, and Marc continues.

"We aren't going to leave you out to dry, dude. And we're not going to sit back and watch you walk into danger." He says.

Play it off by telling them that any research they can do into the shadows' potential weaknesses is worth more at this point.
>>
>>32254602
>「」 No, you're not going to put them in danger.

Tell them what you saw when Puca lifted her skirts. Tell them that seeing that was the reason why you felt like you had to tell them in the first place.

Also, did we ever tell them about how we found the murder scene?
>>
>>32254700
>And ask Puca if this could cause them to gain shadows?
IC: She says that she has no idea. She also mentions that she doesn't even know if touching them when the Hour starts will bring them into the Hour at all, it was just a guess.

>>32254710
>Also, did we ever tell them about how we found the murder scene?
Yeah, they know.

Also, have I mentioned how much I love ties?
>>
>>32254602
>「」 No, you're not going to put them in danger.
They can still help, though. Do research, gather anything we might find useful, maybe they can find a wooden bat and build one of these.
>>
>>32254787
You do?! Me too!

Voting for letting them come, but only when they guilt us into going.
>>
Sorry guys, internet was fucked. Post will be up soon.

We're going with "No."
>>
"No, guys, you aren't coming." You put your foot down. "And that's not just because I don't want either of you in danger. It's because you have something much more useful that you could be doing instead." Jess stands up.

"And we weren't asking if we could come. We were stating a fact. We're coming." And just as you put your foot down, she puts her foot down in turn. "Like we just said, we're not letting you go out there on your own."

"But I need you both to stay here and do some more research. Meinart said that you can find the weakness of a Shadow by finding out its true identity. I need you both to stay here and look up as much as you can so I can deal with what I come across out there." You say, but Jess won't back down.

"Or we could just beat the shit out of it together. Much better solution, wouldn't you agree Marc?" He nods, agreeing with her.

"If my king has said that you are staying here," Puca comes out of the corner, walking over to join the conversation. "Then you are staying here. That is his judgment. And I am here to make you follow that judgment."

"Uh-huh, yeah, and how long have you known him? Oh, two days? You can just butt out now." Jess turns her fiery tongue at Puca, and it's not long before the two start arguing.

You can only sit through a few minutes of it before you get fed up. "Now wait, just wait a second!" The both of them turn towards you.

>Primary: What do?
「」 Convince Jess and Marc that it isn't a good idea for them to come. (Persuasion Check, 1d100-5, best of three.)
「」 Force them out. If they won't be convinced then that's all you can do.
「」 Fold and say that they can come.

Should the ones who wanted them to come even vote?
>>
>>32255326
Sure. Just vote for the last option.

No, I mean that if the ones who wanted them to stay aren't united in their choice, we would automatically fold.

Well, if we get one more roll or one more "Fold" vote, I can start writing.

If I don't get one in five minutes, I'm just going to go with "Fold".

"Look, Jess, you and Marc can come. On one condition." You say. Jess snorts a little, glancing at Puca, who looks upset.

"My king, we don't know what doing this will do, or even if it will let them come into the Hour? What's the point?" She says.

"The point is my condition, Puca. My condition is that you both stick close to me and act as extra eyes for me. I don't want you running off. I don't want you fighting anything. And if I say run, you run. Got it?" Marc nods.

"Yeah, as long as we get to kick the shit out of anything that comes after you." He says, and Jess agrees with him. You sigh.

"Fine. We don't have much time anyway." The sun went down a while ago, and the clock's giving you five minutes until 12.

"This isn't a good idea, my king." Puca says, and you ignore her.

You put your hands on their shoulders as the clock hits midnight.

The clock strikes twelve. The world shifts.

Static envelopes all.

As always, my twitter is @GMMindQuest and I intend to run on Thursday at 9-10PM. My intended schedule from now on is Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays, but we'll see how that ends up.

Feedback and questions are always appreciated. Did you guys like how I wrote Meinart? Is the new rule about Shadows an interesting one? Is there something you'd like to see more of? Please, tell me if you've got any concerns.
>>

the whole mythologies thing was pretty predictable. Can't say anything about Meinart until we see more.

This is quickly becoming Not Persona 4 Quest, and GoldenOP is being upstaged.

I think I saw a few of the early threads of that, I should really catch up.

Persona is definitely a big inspiration for this, amongst other things, but there is something you should know.

If you go through this quest thinking it's Persona 4, you're going to get your shit wrecked.

>Did you guys like how I wrote Meinart? Is the new rule about Shadows an interesting one? Is there something you'd like to see more of?
Meinart didn't feel like as big a deal as he could've been. By the character sheet, he's our idol and was our main motivation for going to college; basically a big part of Lou's character by my interpretation. Fangasming would've been a bit much given the situation, but it felt kind of flat to me. I understand why the infodump didn't leave much room for chatting, though.

Just myself, but I'd like it if Lou and Meinart could talk about their art.
>>
>>32255980
As I see it right now, Meinart is very business-like when it comes to the War. When stuff relating to it pops up, he gets very serious. However, he's much different when he talks about his art. I tried to get that across when Marc was talking to him about it, and he seemed to cheer up a bit.

Maybe we'll see more of that side of him later.
