You are Anthony Grant and you should have had some drank some water last night. Right now you are stuck as Ambrosis, the level 31, hung over cleric. You stare at the ceiling, trying to remember what had happened yesterday.

Slowly everything came back to you.

Steam engine.

Lilac.

Signing up.

Getting angry.

You let out a sigh. “Shit.”

You didn't do anything wrong, so you have no intention of apologizing, but getting everything sorted out is probably the best course of action, at least to keep Judicature from getting upset.

You roll out of bed and stare at your window. It was dark outside.

You get back in your armor and head down stairs.

Tabula is sitting at a table. He holds up a hand to greet you. You point to the door and the two of you leave.

“Ready to get back to work?” Tabula asks.

“Yeah.” You say.

You could probably go talk to Lilac later, but it's late at night, she's probably asleep by now, waking her up now would probably just make her even more crazy. Then again, she probably went to sleep when you did, or soon after, so she may still be awake now. There is also the fact that if Judicature is going to be driving your crazy contraption she should probably be here for the building process.

“Something wrong?” Tabula inquires.

“No, just thinking about some stuff. We might need to go stop somewhere first.”

“Where?”

[ ] “At a shop. I need to talk to someone real fast.”

“I forgot to get our driver.”

“Our driver?” Tabula asks.

“Yeah. Friend of mine named Judicature.” You explain, “She's going to need to know how this thing works.”

Tabula simply shrugs. “Makes sense.”

You travel back to the inn, heading up stairs. “Judi?” You ask, knocking on her door.

You hear a sleepy “Hm?” Coming from inside.

“We're gonna start building the tank. Felt like you should be there.”

“Mmhmm...”

“Can I come in?”

“Mmmmrrrr...”

“Is that a no?”

“Hold on...”

You and Tabula wait around for a couple minutes as you hear what you assume to be Judicature putting on her chain armor.

“So, who's this friend of yours?” Tabula asks.

“Friend I met after the Databasing.”

“Databasing?”

“The Event, the Happening, the Great Change. Whatever you wanna call it.”

“Ah. We call it the-”

The door opens. “Ready.” Says a groggy Judicature.

“Alright, let's get going.” You respond.

Soon your ragtag group is out on the streets heading towards Tabula's workshop.

“So...” You look to the duelist. “How's Lilac doing?”

“Good, I guess.” She responds. “I had to make her go to sleep, though. She didn't want to stop working.”

“Oh? What's she making?. ”

“Her crew made me promise not to tell anyone. Sorry.”

“Her crew?”

“Yeah. Two other guys. M and Frankenstien.”

“You mean Frankenstein.”

“No, Frankenstien. Did you never see Young Frankenstein? Mel Brooks?”

“Who?”

She sighs.

“So how are Frank and Emmy doing?” Tabula asks.

Judi stays silen for a while before blurting out. “Good?”

“You know them?” You ask Tabula.

“Yeah. They are what you might a couple that thinks they are adorable.”

“Are they not?” You ask.

“Sickening is a better description.” Tabula responds.

“I thought it was kinda cute...” Judi responds meekly

“The first time, sure, but it wears thin very quickly.”

In front of you stands the entrance to Tabula's workshop. The elf opens the door. “Ladies first.”

Judi looks to you then back to the door. She takes a few steps inside. “T-Thank you.”

You could feel the spaghetti flying everywhere as she looked to you for instructions. You motion for her to just continue on.

Soon you are back in the workshop, placing a bucket into the coals, seeing it fill with steam and push a piston forward, driving a piston forward in one burst, but only in one burst. There has to be a way to keep the steam consistent.

If we can get a big enough fire going, maybe we can concentrate the steam into a small hole to increase pressure, then shoot that at the piston.

We can use one-way valves for letting used steam leave and pouring in new water/recycling water.

A switch valve! Yes. That will do it. You just need to figure out where to put it. Obviously you want to expend as little steam as possible, so the obvious solution is to put it as close to the piston as possible.

You nod to yourself. Damn you were awesome.

Tabula cuts off a section of pipe and you attach the valve to it. You begin to heat the bucket again, but nothing seems to be happening.

Judi mumbles something.

You turn around. “Huh?”

“The valve is closed.”

You look back to the bucket and lever. “SHIT!”

You try to switch its position, but you end up just knocking the entire contraption around instead. You really should have had this thing bolted to the floor. You grab the BURNING HOT PIPE! OH GOD THE PAIN! YOU PULL THE DEVIL-VALVE! OH GOD THE PAIN! LETTING GO OF THE PIPE you wave your hand in the air. That was really hot.

The wheel continues on just as it had before. You need to find a way to automate this shit. You think for a while. Perhaps something that opens the valve when the piston gets into the pipe?

You get a long bar of metal hook it into the switch of the switch valve. You then attach it to one of the spokes of the wheel.

You push the wheel along.

When the wheel gets to the position of the piston being completely in the pipe, the valve is open. When the piston leaves, though, the valve closes.

You put the contraption onto the coals and wait.

“Come on...” You whisper.

Everyone is staring at the engine.

The wheel turns and the piston shoots out. Only a small cloud of steam goes with it. The piston rounds the wheel, goes back into the pipe, and the piston goes shooting out once again, but the wheel is now going the opposite direction. The wheel goes back and for, mocking you. Fuck that wheel.

“We design some controls.” You say, turning to the Duelist.

She looks at you questioningly.

“You're going to be the one driving it, so you need to be the one comfortable with the controls.”

“I'll watch, then.”

“I want you to help me design them.”

“Oh!” She says, looking a bit excited.

“Need me for anything?” Tabula asks.

“Got any paper?” You respond.

“Do I look like a Scribe?”

You fold your arms at his snide comment.

“I have paper...” Judi says.

“Why do YOU have paper?”

“It's standard issue for the Morning Star now, in case we need to make a wanted poster really fast.”

You scratch your chin. “That kinda makes sense, in a strange way.”

The two of you sit down at a table. Judi hands you an inkwell and a feather pen. You draw out a square.

“Okay,” You say, “This is the area where all the controls are going to be. So, this is going to be a tank, so that means it has tank controls. You know what that means, right?”

“That the sides move independent of one another?”

“Pretty much. So, we're going to need two levers. One for left, one for right. So we'll probably put them on opposite sides of each other.” You draw two rectangles on opposite sides of the square.

“Okay, what else do we need?” Judi asks.

“Uhh...” You begin to think. Shit, what else DO you need? The ballista won't fire from here, and it's not like there's an ignition key you need to turn. Shit.

“How about some breaks?” Judi asks.

“Oh, yeah! That should be a thing, shouldn't it?” You dip the pen in ink. “Where should it go?” You ask.

“Mmmmm...” She points to the direct center. “There.”

“Alright.” You say, drawing another rectangle. “Is there anything else you need?”

“I don't think so?”

You're not too sure either.

>>
So have we decided on what weapons our tank should use?

I'm not too good on LH's lore, but I remember small arms is out. What about cannons?
>>
Friendly reminder before we get too carried away with the tank shenanigans, we can't outfit this thing with gunpowder weapons even if we overskill to make them manually. Trove might be able to use black powder cannons due to class fiat, but that's as far as it goes.

>>Mamare-san, can people create modern technology like guns or television if they have a high enough skill and real-life knowledge?
There's a possibility, but there's a difference between making things and actually using them.
Even if you make a very powerful weapon, you might need to be level 200 to be actually able to use it.

http://lh.oksub.me/wiki/Touno_Mamare_Q%26A_2013-12-07

PS: PKing in a race that ends at Morning Star HQ seems like a REAL BAD IDEA. Especially with Judicature as a direct accomplice.
>>

>>
>>32251082

>>
>>32251054
>>32251045
Flamethrowers are neat but lack range. The landship should be capable of this, though.

>>32251033
I say ballista with different kinds of bolts. Explosive, incendiary, scattershot.
>>
>>32250983
Has to be something we're not directly operating probably. the problem with guns is that they have too high level requirements to make and equip within the context of the game. dropping an asston of cheap alchemist firebombs in a hole and hooking it up to a basic(ingame) trap on the other hand provides far beyond the explosive power needed for a canon so it is feasible simply because the author(of LH. not the quest) has underestimated the West's love of shooting stuff and explosions.
>>
>>32251034

>>32251045
>>32251054
These guys know what's up. Elemental summons are ranged by default, and won't weigh our vehicles down when not in use like regular mounted weapons will.

There's a pretty extensive pile of shit in the old archives on /a/ people were inventing. I was making an airship fleet coupled with a railroad service and abuse of the bags of holding for transport purposes.

I personally think if we use weapons for THIS race we should go with basic wacky races tricks like oil slicks, caltrops, smokeskreens(vent the steam/smoke in a different direction?) and so on. That way we can say we were using nonlethal protection designed for running away from high level monsters.

>>32251210
They already have repeating crossbows ingame i think. EIther that or the guy was using an (arbalest?) item banned for being classified as a weapon of mass destruction during the middle ages. Just imagine an crossbow that shoots an arrow that goes directly through steel armour without trouble The gun restriction is prettymuch flavor text considering that said weapon is more effective than most guns until we get to modern tech thanks to it's armour piercing properties. Also bows that can actually hit the moon while guns are considered too OP is bullshit.
>>
>>32251355
The gun restrictions are basically to keep the setting as medieval as possible.

Otherwise adventurers would just start bringing out automatic weapons.
>>
>>32251267
Oh please. thats small time. Teach a monk (maybe two in tandem?)how to split the atom using some device we make and name the attack Tsar bomba.
>>
>>32251355

>>
>>32251355
To be fair, that dude's bow isn't able to do that until item flavor text starts becoming real. And Phantasmal class items are meant to be OP due to their absurd rarity, anyway.

“WHAT IF I ADD A GEAR SHIFT SO YOU CAN REVERSE?” You shout over the ringing.

RING

“Is something wrong?” Judi asks.

RING

RING

“JUST TRYING TO IGNORE A CALL!”

RING

RING

The rings are starting to get to you. The maddening tone is destroying your mind. It is consuming you. Perhaps the abomination which controlled you once is doing the same, but with the ring tone. Does thie beast know no limit!?

RIN-

The ringing stops. You almost cry from the sudden relief.

“What were we talking about before?” You ask.

“Gear shift?” She asks.

“Right! Where should we put it?”

“Can I get it next to my seat?”

“Yeah, sure.” You write down a note that the gearshift should be next to the seat. You then turn the paper over, feeling a sudden burst of inspiration. Steam cannon, flame thrower, catapult; these are the words you write.

“What are you writing?” Judi asks.

“Some things to add.”

“Isn't that cheating?”

“No?”

“It feels like cheating.”

You flip the paper back over. “So, anything else to add?”

“Please tell me you aren't going to cheat.”

Yeah, but at the same time you have to remember that there's still arbitrary physical limitations imposed by the new reality they're in. I think Mamare said if someone like Shiro tried to put on anything other than cloth/leather, he wouldn't be able to move. At all. Same goes for picking up weapons your class can't use, or trying to one hand a two-handed weapon.

On the bright side, there's still no established lore on Pirates yet so Shep is free to write about all the black powder shit he wants with Trove.
>>
>>32251690
I think that's the point. If Coyote loses, he's probably mind-controlled.

“Les Miserables is a musical.” Judi comments.

“I'm trying to get across the continent to meet up with my brother in Big Apple.” You say, “Also, I have magical levers that might be able to reactivate the town portals.”

“You really have magic levers, or are you just saying that?”

“Really have those levers.” You pull one of them out of your inventory. “I call them True Levers.” You touch the smooth back to the lever. “You can tell, because these have a flat back.” You pull out a different lever, “This one is a False Lever, it's like a real lever, has a gear in the back, can be used to turn things. Trying to make a lever now makes you a False Lever, but ones that were made before the Databasing are True Levers.”

“So, how do the True Levers work?”

“You just attach them to things.” You say, “They pretty much work, as if there were gears in the thing already.”

“And the gates?”

“You pull all the levers at the same time, they activate.” You say, “Maybe.”

“Maybe?”

“Well, when we tried to pull them, the lever didn't budge, but when we had a lever connected to Big Apple and South Angel and pulled both at the same time, they budged, just a little.”

“And if you pull all the levers on all the portals at the same time, they'll activate again?”

“That's the idea.”

He scratches his nose.

“So,” You ask, “What are you going to tell use about yourself.”

He pulls at his clean shaven chin. He looks a bit surprised that there is nothing to hold past his chin. “I had a beard in real life.”

You give him your patented you-must-be-fucking-with-me face. “Seriously?”

“Okay, okay.” He furrows his brow in thought, “How about I tell you about the time I got my ass kicked in a bar fight with a nun that studied kung-fu?”

“What?”
>>
>>32253805
“Okay, so, back when I was in college, there was this bar I used to go to with my friends from my construction job. This was when I was getting my masters. Anyway, me and my friends are drinking and stuff when this nun comes in, asking to use the phone. Me and my friends start making all kinds of, “So a nun, a blank, and a blank walk into a bar. We had some good ones too, don't remember what they were, but I remember they were good. Anyway, she's on the phone and this guy comes and knocks into her. Looking back, he probably meant nothing by it, but me and my friends jump up ready to fight this guy. His friends jump up. Soon the entire bar is ready to fight. The nun walks over, calms everyone down, but then someone just punches her. Not sure who even did it, but suddenly fists are flying everywhere. After a while I wasn't even paying attention to who I was punching anymore, suddenly get a kick to the chest. It was the god damn nun. My adrenalin was pumping and I was drunk, so trying to fight the nun seemed like a good idea at the time. Needless to say, one swift kick to the face and I'm out like a light. When I come to the bartender is laughing his ass off at us.” He clears his throat. “And that's the story of how I got my ass kicked by a nun in a bar fight.”

You and Judi give him a small round of applause.

The elf looks out his window. “Sun's coming up. Looks like it's time for me to go get some sleep.” He points to you, “You should go get some sleep too. We only have... Two days left?”

You lean back in your chair. “Fuck.” You say. “Why is making a steam engine so time consuming?”

You look out at the window.

You get up from your chair.

“Going to go to sleep?” Judi asks.

“No, I need to go talk to someone.”

“Lilac?”

“Yeah.”

The duelist gets up and follows you out the door.

You look at her as you walk. “Coming with me?”

“Just want to make sure you do not do something you will regret.”

“You don't trust me suddenly?”

“I don't trust the you that needs sleep.”

“Well, I'm neither drunk nor tired, so there is no need to worry.”

“I would still like to be there.”

“Do you know what happened?”

“I know what Lilac told me.”

“What did Lilac tell you?”

“She told me enough. She told me you killed him.”

“Killed who?”

“It's a Sta-” She goes quiet for a moment, “Never mind.”

“So what did she tell you?”

“That you said something and she got angry and kicked you out.”

“That's pretty much what happened.”

“What did you tell her?”

“Didn't she tell you?”

“No. She avoided telling me that part.”

You put on a bit of a frown, not even sure what that could mean. “Well, I said that she should be able to make a steam engine. She is a real engineer after all. If I can get this far she probably could have had the thing done by now.”

“That's all?”

“I may have asked if she was even a real engineer, but I was joking. It was a joke. People need to have thicker skin.”

Judi remains silent.

You go silent as well.

After a couple of minutes you two stand in front of the signless shop. Judi motions to the door. “You first.”

You take a deep breath, walk up to the door, and knock.

The doorknob turns.

The door opens.

“Hello?” Asks an unfamiliar voice. In the doorway you see a woman in cloth armor. Above her head are the words Emm and <49erS>. She's a somewhat short figure with a large smiling face and curly, red hair.

“Uhh...” This is not what you expected, “I need to talk to Lilac.”

“Okie dokie.” She responds, opening the door for you.

“Who's at the door, boo-babe?” Asks a somewhat masculine voice from inside.

You look to see a long haired man in a white coat, the tattoos of the Race of Ritual all over his face. Frankenstien is his name, also a <49erS> member.

“Someone to see Lilac.” Emm says.

“Yeah?” Frankenstien asks.

“Yeah!” Emm responds.

“Yeah?” The alchemist asks again.

“Yeah!” Replies the mage again.

“Yeah?”

“Yeah!”

The two repeat this over and over again, getting closer with each Yeah until they finally meet in the center of the room. They suddenly erupt into kissy noises. The display is quite disturbing.

“They don't stop doing that.” You hear Lilac next to you.

You look down to see the dwarf standing next to you.

“Did you need something?” You ask.

“Yeah.” You say, “I wanted to talk about what had happened before.”

“It doesn't matter.” Lilac quickly responds, “I was angry about something else.”

The two in the center continue their kisses.

“Do they ever stop?” You ask.

“No.”

“Huh.” You pause. “So, how is your racer coming along?”

“Oh! I wanted to do this yesterday.” She goes rummaging through her bag before pulling out a flat piece of metal.

“I don't get it.” You respond.

She touches the metal to your armor. It sticks to it with a small clink. She lets go of the metal, which stays stuck to your breastplate.

“Miracles.” Lilac states. “Miracles.”

Doubt it, even with the full resources of the US military backing them the USN is still trying to work out the kinks in theirs. No way in hell we'd be able to actually use it, anyway.

Instead of trying to recreate modern things we should be thinking about how to leverage the fantasy elements of the Elder Tale world to our benefit. I'm sure there's some interesting magical crafting materials with properties that could benefit our mad scientist endeavors.

We didn't apologize for shit though, reread the update.

>“Did you need something?” You ask.

>“Yeah.” You say, “I wanted to talk about what had happened before.”

>“It doesn't matter.” Lilac quickly responds, “I was angry about something else.”
>>
>>32255589
I disagree with regards to the railgun thing, but I think that's a good perspective to have nonetheless.

We should be trying to do new things rather than recreate old things.
>>
>>32255582
Not sure how you could get that impression.
>>
>>32255604
We can do both.

Incorporate new things into old things.

This is starting to feel more and more Alpha Centarui like.

It is a good thing.

Nah, we need to tame mindworms. If they don't exist, we need to create mindworms. From levers.

We'll do it, Anon. We'll do it even if we have to punch God in the face.

And by God, I mean Shepherd.

>>32255715
WE ARE DOING THIS.

You can't have America without railroads. It just ain't right.
Maybe that's why Lilac will leave the party. To go build that railroad.

I dunno man, they cranked out the Ocypete pretty fast. Given enough time the tech is just going to keep accelerating. Maybe not in terms of weapons, but definitely in other fields, especially when you consider that Elder Tale has materials that modern day humans could only dream of.

We're still super early in the timeline, though. If we get into really crazy concepts it should be much later in the quest.
>>
>>32255881
I would be shocked if Coyote was more man than beast like especially since he's a mob.
It doesn't really matter though since I doubt we'll be seeing a lot of him aside from maybe 2 more encounters.

Thanks for the thread Shep and goodnight all.
