Equipment checked, all ready to go, the squad moves out. You take a quick taste of the water on the beach only for you to find, to your disgust, that it's salt water. The only other bodies of water marked on the map are a few streams or rivers halfway into the forest. You have to tough it out for the time being until you find a smaller stream unmarked on the map. The weather isn't hot or dry, it's much nicer than the weather back home.

Squad 7 moves in loose formation into the forest, all weapons slung, except for Ander, loaded autogun cradled in his arms. As you close up your bag and swing it onto your back, you can only think of one thing: the family blade is not in your possession.

You march for a few hours, the others complaining the whole time about thirst, before finally stumbling upon a decently sized stream, two meters across and coming to halfway up your calf. It trickles along steadily on its rocky bed, the water clear and cold to the touch when you dip a hand in.

The sun disappears behind a gloomily dark cloud, not yet three fourths of its way across the sky. Everyone fills up their flasks, and it's only your quick thinking that stops them from drinking immediately. You pop a little white pill from the bottle marked “Iodine” into each of the flasks and tell them to wait half an hour before drinking. Basic wilderness survival that you learned from Father back home. Never drink straight from a natural water source, no matter how clear, unless you don't mind getting sick. The squad grumbles a bit, but quiet down when you describe to them possible symptoms of whatever disease you might contract from unfiltered water.

You get to Jakko last, and he's holding two flasks. Ander is gone.

You are Evangeline Salome Rosalina de Fuentes, nobility of Alamos Primus. Your father, an Imperial Guard commander, died in the line of duty. Your mother died giving birth to your fourth sibling and only brother. Newly orphaned, you are now a cadet at the Schola Progenium of Loyola Tertius. This is your first training exercise.

“Where is he? Jakko, where's Ander?”

Jakko only grunts unintelligibly, shakes his head, and says, “Ander. Gone. Hear. Give water.” Another grunt. “Leaf.”

Jakko's speech is puzzling, broken Low Gothic, thickly accented. You didn't notice at the beach or the first hours of march, but then he only said his name and was the only one who didn't complain of thirst.
Before you try to ask again to get something of a better answer, Ander comes out of the trees further down the stream.

Before you can ask where he was, he says, “There's another squad filling up, upstream. It might be squad 8, it might not, I can't tell for sure. But they've got horses.”

Horses. The family kept a few, but you only rode a few times. A squad on horseback will definitely get back to the Schola quickly before the rest. Ander motions for everyone to follow him and you move upstream. Sure enough, there they are. Eight black beauties drinking from the stream, one for each cadet. Four cadets of the other squad attend to the horses, the others sitting and resting against trees.

Success!

Moving away from the stream and the other squad so they can't hear you, you tell squad 7 your plan. You speak in Low Gothic for the benefit of Jakko, and he nods periodically. Everyone draws their weapon slowly, and Ander sticks with his autogun. He seems...very confident with it. Sabbatine draws her knife, but you don't know if that will really help. She sticks to the back of the group.

The other squad is still watering the horses and resting. You chop your hand forward in signal to engage. You know this from seeing Father's regiment drill several times. Apparently you did it right and they understood, as you put the hand over a cadet's mouth and drag him backward. His eyes bulge as he wakes from his nap. A quick blow to the back of the ear with the pommel of your gladius serves to knock him back out cold. You glance over and see another three unconscious cadets. You notice that the uniform of yours says: JERALD, EDNIL Z8.

The cadets watering the horses seem to have not noticed. The boys move up to take them on, you and the other three girls having been the ones to knock out the resting ones. The other squad doesn't know what hit them. You swear you see Bartamaeus' face light up with glee, but it's gone after a moment. The horses don't even notice a thing the whole time, just drinking up.

Welcome, your participation is very much welcomed and appreciated! Don't worry, we'll be having an extra long thread today, so I don't think you'll miss out if you're slow in reading the archives.
>>
Everyone sheathes their weapons, except for Ander. He still keeps holding on to his autogun.

“Check them for anything useful,” you say.

Rena purses her lips and replies, “Is that really necessary? Do we really need to? They need the supplies as well to get back.” The look in Sabbatine's eyes seems to show that she shares the same sentiment. Alizabeth is silent and blank-faced as usual. The boys seem neutral about it but don't make a move yet.

“We can leave them with food and water and whatnot, the essentials. And if they have anything we don't, we're taking it. Besides, I bet they have a flare gun just like we do, though my bet is that use of it is automatic menial work,” you say.

The two girls give a resigned look and everyone starts to go through the bags of the other squad. In the end, you relieve them of the following: four flasks, two autogun magazines, and their rope. You're merciful in leaving them the rest. You won't leave them to die, at least this time. You imagine this isn't the last survival exercise.

The horses aren't as big as the ones on the family estate, but they aren't the size of the ponies that you saw once at the street fair in the nearby city on Alamos. Your back thanks you heartily as you pack up all the gear into the saddlebags of the horses.

As you mount up, you wonder why you were issued with autoguns. The rest of the weapons make some sense for a survival exercise, but firearms really only serve one purpose, and you don't think the abbots would be happy if you had slit the throats of the other cadet squad. You remember the “surprises” the abbot mentioned in the aircraft, but besides the horses, nothing else has shown up in the day.
>>
You ponder over the thought as you mount up, but eventually you stop thinking about it as thinking to ride properly and minimizing later pain in your legs and bottom dominate the forefront of your mind. It's been a while. Everyone else seems to be as accustomed to riding as you are, and Jakko almost falls out of the saddle.

The eight of you ride until sunset, 20:00 on your chronographs. You show the others how to build camp and soon you're set up. The tents are pitched, and the hatchets are put to use for wood to burn. You figure out that the white packets are slab mix, similar to the protein drink you had...yesterday morning. It's not the best meal, but it's the only thing. You could try to forage later, since you're not especially pressed for time with the horses.

The fire isn't really needed, but the night gets quite cold according to the others. It's decided that it's prudent that you set up a watch, switching every hour and fifteen minutes, the sentry warmed by the fire while everyone else is snuggled up in blankets inside the tents. The girls in one tent and the boys in the other, of course. An autogun is left with the sentry along with one of the melee weapons.

Seeing as you've been taking a leadership role so far, you see no reason to stop. You'll lead by example and take the first watch.

Ander stays up for a little bit longer, whittling at branches and messing with the fire. He builds a contraption over the fire. It will keep you warm but preserve your night version he says with a smirk. Then he goes into the tent to sleep.

Your rotation goes by without incident. You sleep for a bit afterwards, but wake up at about midnight. There is no moon out. You try to fall asleep again to no avail, so you go out of the tent, blanket wrapped around you, and talk to...

Sabbatine is awake on watch duty, the fourth shift. She stares out into the dark, shifting her gaze every so often. Her autogun rests in the crook of her right arm barrel up, one of the spears buried in the ground next to her. A turned off flashlight in her left hand. One solid projectile magazine loaded and another on the floor. She's shorter than you already, and she looks more minute sitting on the grass in a temperate forest.

You sit down next to her, and she almost starts.

“Can't sleep?”, she asks. “I...know how that is. Quite well. We all do, I think.”

“Things have been happening very fast, recently. Lots of knockouts,” you say.

“It's a first for the rest of us, too.”

“The rest of you... You guys have been together how long?”, you ask. You and Jakko are the only new arrivals within squad 7. You finger the patch on your jacket that says: DE FUENTES, EVANGELINE Z7.

She speaks hesitantly: “Six years ago, when we were six. The five of us were brought to the orphanage in Ignatius Magna. That's the city just across the sea. Rena was already there when we arrived. I say the five of us, but about a thousand and a half of us were borne on the Wind. Few of us old enough to be cadets back then though.”

Again, she mentions this “Wind.”

“A thousand and a half of you...from the same planet? Where were you born?”, you ask. You were, of course, familiar with the major planets in the sector.

“Nereus Primaris,” she answers. You think back to your lessons. Hive world, relatively close to the sector capital. The Upside-down Megalopolis. You're awful with history though, and news doesn't travel too quickly to backwater systems like Alamos. But all cadets are orphans.

You can tell you won't be able to get much more out of her at this point. You've only been acquainted for two days. Her cheery face from before looks so much more gloomy, and the occasional flicker of light from under the fire cover illuminates the bags under her eyes.

You're about to start telling her about yourself to fill the silent void – barring the crackle of the fire – but you stop when you hear something. Branches breaking underfoot, something padded impacting the ground.

A pair of slitted yellow eyes. A huff, a puff, a hiss-like growl. In the minimal light, the outline of a shape as tall as your shoulder. You slowly remove the fire cover. A juvenile grox.

>What do you do?

The grox blinks once, twice. It hiss-growls again.

You pull the branch out of the fire so-so-so slowly, the end caught. You rise to your feet, trying your very hardest not to move quickly. Drops of sweat roll down your face. They're not from the fire.

Then you start waving the lit branch in front of the grox. Its eyes follow it, dilating.

It pounces.

You try to stab your sword into its head as it bears down on your, but you're knocked onto your back. Your head hits the ground. Four times now. You feel the heat of the fire very close to the left side of your face. Something burns. The smell of the grox's breath combined with whatever's burning is horrendous. It roars in your face. Sabbatine screams.

A loud bang. Gunsmoke. Something warm, very warm, splashes on your face. The grox staggers off of you and topples over. You turn your head to see Ander with his autogun, a wrecked flash over the muzzle.

“I swear by the Saint, it works every time in the picts,” he says. The wrecked flask is promptly discarded.

Another bad smell. You get up finally, and Sabbatine is in fetal position on the ground. Poor girl pissed herself.

The rest of the night is a blur. Next thing, you wake up in the tent. It's dawn. The right sleeve of your fatigue jacket is cut off and your arm is bandaged.

>What do you do now?

Captcha: lvvnssm EMPEROR
>>
>>32237173
check everyone is intact and ready to continue moving and check our supplies, pack everything we have up and get ready to move off on the horses
>>
>>32237173
>Dig into delicious grox meat
>Ask Ander what works everytime in the picts
>Also thanks him
>>
>>32237173
Check on the horses to see what condition they are in.
>>
>>32237197
Like I said before, if we ride hard we'll make reach the objective within the day.

Two riders ahead of the main group to avoid ambush on the path, but we should already have outstripped our competing cadets in any case.
>>
I should probably include a counter of km covered, huh?
47/130
>>
>>32237202
I'm guessing he tried to use the flask like a suppressor, as seen in some movies.
>>
>>32237242
>http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Endurance_riding
>In the United States, most endurance rides are either 50 or 100 miles (160 km) long.

Sweet, Team 8 can suck a choad.
>>
I'm eating dinner, so I'll leave you guys to discuss a bit.

Potential topics:
Would you guys like to play out the rest of the exercise or skip to arriving at the Schola?
How would you like to thank Ander?

Obviously, playing out the rest of the week will mean more encounters and more rolling, but also more XP and more socialization/characterization.
>>
Further topics for discussion:
The PC is 12, and so, is coming into sexuality.
WE DON'T HAVE THE FAMILY BLADE
XP spending?
>>
>>32237315
I'd like to play out the not boring bits like endless travelling, but the encounters and getting to know the other cadets

>spoiler
we won't kill him first when we're stranded and need his supplies

>>32237334
>WE DON'T HAVE THE FAMILY BLADE
they better look after it and give it back to us when we get back or theres gonna be blood spilled

>XP
at the end of this thread we'll have 9, which means we can spend 8 and get two level 2 attributes up to 3, I think we should increase intelligence/perception and agility/endurance
>>
>Schola
Unless the other teams got their hands on some transport the same time we did we're miles ahead of ANY other team and WAY ahead of our opponents.
I'd say we skip to the Schola, see our victorious and sore rear-ends safe return.

>Thank Ander
Keep it simple, but sincere.
"That could of gotten messy. Thanks, I owe you one."

>XP
Weapon skill, straight up. I have a feeling Barty is going to be raring for a rematch, and so might the cadets of Team 8. Schola kids don't play nice, our family blade should be at hand at all times.

Then agility/endurance like >>32237359 said.
>>
>>32237422
our WS is at 3, which would cost 6 to get it to 4, so we'd need to get extra XP besides the base 2 from each thread before we could level another attribute up
>>
>>32237497
Ah, I agree then.

I'd say Agility, Endurance and Fellowship in that order.
>>
>>32237537
we could get WS up to 4 this thread if we get extra XP, but I think getting two of our rank 2 attributes up to rank 3 would be better, after all, the relevant attribute decreases the relevant DC
>>
>>32237577
I have to say it's an interesting take on the system (I like it).

But the Blade of Succession should give us a hefty enough advantage with WS3 that we should do well enough in any case. Better to invest it in the areas we are lagging in for now.
>>
>>32237615
The system isn't all that different from Dark Heresy. It's separated Leadership into its own stat, reduced the die size from d100 to d20, and made it roll over instead of roll under. That said, it's interesting, and I wouldn't mind using something similar for a more rules light game, myself.
>>
Guys, I'm starting to crash a bit, I didn't get much sleep last night. That said, I could take a shower, get some sugar in me and get 2-4 more updates out, but that would rule out another session tomorrow. What will it be?
>>
>>32237819
I'd prefer you take it easy and run another session tomorrow instead of pushing yourself tonight.
>>
>>32237835
actually scratch that, I wouldn't be able to make it tomorrow, so whatever feels best for you OP
>>
>>32237819
Rest up now and go for a full thread tomorrow

Also, out of curiosity, why did you separate Leadership and Fellowship?
>>
>>32237819
I'm about to crash too OP, but we've had a good run as far as these things go. Solid ETA for next time?
>>
>>32237860
The distinction is probably more important for Schola cadets than it would be for your average DH victim/player.
>>
I guess I'll hit the sack soon then. If someone would kindly archive the thread.

>>32237860
To tell you honestly, I don't remember exactly, but it felt logical at the time. Leadership will be a measure of trust people have in you to make the right decisions and the ability to inspire them to do something. It's more of a group thing. Fellowship on the other hand, is more personal, social skills, getting people to like you and trying to persuade.
If you guys would rather it put them back together as one stat, I would be amenable to that, and push the consolidated stat up to 4 as compensation.

>>32237906
Solid ETA would be tomorrow, May 21st, 0800 UTC.
>>
>>32237933
Wait, what the fuck time is it now? My clock is saying it is the 21st already, does 4chan time run on MST or UCT or what?
>>
>>32237953
GMT/UTC+10 here, half an hour until its the 21st, where are you in the world?
>>
>>32237953
It is currently 1327 UTC, May 20. 4chan time runs on EST.
http://www.worldtimeserver.com/current_time_in_UTC.aspx
>>
>>32237933
No it makes sense, there's a definite difference between having people trust you to make the right decision and liking you/listening to what you say.

Although, I'd suggest you grant us the choice to use Leadership or Fellowship to persuade someone where appropriate?
>>
>>32237933
I'm fine with the break between LD and Fel as long as it remains clear. I actually agree with you reasoning, I just wanted to make sure there WAS reasoning, you know?
>>
>>32238004
That would be acceptable.

I'll be sticking around for the next two and a half hours if you guys have any questions for me.
>>
>>32237973
Australia, mate. Where the women glow and men chunder.
>>
Would you guys like the scratches on your right arm from the grox to scar? The scars will probably stretch as you grow and train, though.
>>
>>32238052
nah, any scars we keep should be ones with a badass story behind them, ones worthy of keeping
>>
>>32238057
Dueling scars, ho!
>>
>>32238052
How does the wounds system work? Maybe scarring should have something to do with that.
>>
>>32238013
QLD/NT? no DST here
>>
>>32238057
I agree, then again it's not like we should really have a choice in whether a scar is permanent. And it'd be fun to bullshit like a bloody Catachan at a boozefest to others over how we got it.

>"How'd you get that scar, ma'am?"
>"This one? Ah, now there's a tale..."
>*stare off wistfully into the distance*
>>
>>32238116
Coast off Qld, it's only just creeping into the 21st now.
>>
>>32238092
Uh, well. My plan really is to hand wave stuff. Light wounds are +1 to DC involving that limb, more serious wounds are +2 to DC. Loss of limb will get you pulled out of combat provided you're with others, dice gods willing. Then you'll get a new limb, snazziness depending on who you're goody-goody with.
>>
>>32238134
>Catachan Devil snuck into my tent, so I punched it's skull in, but it gave me a nice scratch before I killed it
A Catachan Devil
>That's right
In your tent
>Mmhm
You're full of shit, Sergeant.
>Fuck off Nieves, like you'd know a Catachan Devil if you saw one
>>
>>32238161
Then I guess I'd say serious wounds should have a chance to scar, but light wounds probably don't?
Though I have plenty of scars that I don't know the story behind…
>>
>>32237933
>Solid ETA would be tomorrow, May 21st, 0800 UTC.
should we keep the thread alive?
>>
>>32238377
Nah, it'll be a new session.
>>
>>32238387
well this thread might still be alive by then, its only got 145 posts in it
>>
Oh, shit. Completely forgot.

2 XP: Base
1 XP: Knocked out Squad 8 and took their horses
>>
>>32238828
awesome, so that puts us up to 10xp, I say we level perception and endurance both up to 3, which leaves us with 2xp to spend later
>>
>>32238877
You can vote on it next session, I remembered too late and the other players are gone now.
>>
>>32238959
will do, I'll probably make it late to the thread, I'll be working tomorrow night but should be finished before the threads over
