Kakashi stands before the three of you, his students with his arms crossed, a stern and resolute posture. A gale blows past, the sky looking down with sparse cloud cover, now a blue with gentle tints of orange as the sun angles its way down into the western sky.

Kakashi gives his verdict and color returns to your face after his sudden appearance, Sakura stares on in a disbelief that soon evolves into a calm mirth, just barely containing her cheer.

Sasuke however, scowls. “What the heck are you talking about, barely passed?! I got the damn bell, didn't I? I didn't even need these losers' help!” He grits his teeth, clearly unhappy with Kakahi's decision and even now in the face of his wrath, calm demeanor.

“This test was to see how well the three of you could work together despite the mission parameters,” His smile quickly fades as he looks down on Sasuke. “You took advantage of the openings your team gave you, however your objective was clearly never to work with them.”

Sasuke bites down hard, anger unbecoming of his demeanor, “I wouldn't have done that if I wasn't paired with these two. I knew they'd hold me back if I worked with them.”That, grinds into your nerves.

Straining against the ropes, even as they're fastened tightly to the pole, you muster up all the breath you can to yell at him, “What the hell do you mean, hold you back?! I'm the reason you even got that bell! You're just mad that you're not all you're piped up to be!”

Kakashi chuckles, while Sakura stays out of the dispute, folding her knees into her stomach and keeping to herself.

“Naruto's right Sasuke. I've seen your grades, and while they're exceptional, they don't make you perfect. In this case, you came in dead last.”

I was thinking we might try to learn some stuff from Kabuto, too, if we wind up being friends with him. He obviously couldn't teach us any of his really cool techniques like instant regeneration or zombie creation, but being a medic is part of his cover. So he could teach us the basic medical techniques, which are actually really useful even if we're not interested in healing. Chakra scalpels don't do much damage, but they can phase through matter to cut at the insides of things. Could be useful for developing an armor-piercing attack. And the healing palm, if performed incorrectly, knocks its target comatose instead of healing their wounds. So that's got obvious utility. Both of those could potentially be really useful, properly weaponized, given the fights we're going to be in soon enough.

I think we ARE shaping up to be the next Kakashi, and that's part of why the guy's messing with us so much. He's really disturbed by how similar our motivations are to the ones he had as a child. He doesn't know how to handle it. Hopefully the fact that we're showing a high willingness to sacrifice ourselves for the team will curtail his worries. Though that could freak him out more. Last time he saw someone sacrifice for the sake of their friends it left him with some major trauma. A crow is heard cawing in the distance, and Sasuke begins to walk away, hands shoved deep into his pockets. Sakura looks up to watch him leave, yet doesn't say anything.

“Where are you going?” Kakashi calls out to him, looking noticeably irrate now.

“Home. You don't have anything else planned for us today, right?” Sasuke stops to look back, eying his sensei over the shoulder, the anger from before now mostly dissipated.

“Ah, right.” Kakashi smiles, “You're a ninja, get yourself out.”

You groan, escape jutsus weren't exactly one of your strong points.

“Sensei,” Sakura raises her hand. “Can I help Naruto?”

“You're a part of his team, aren't you?” Kakashi states plainly, and Sakura gets the message. She springs up and takes a Kunai out of her case.

“Hold still, I'll get you out of there.” She starts sawing away at the rope until you're finally free, rope marks pressing in through your green jumpsuit. Sakura flashes a smile at you before looking away, as though she remembered your “relationship.”

Here's an idea for a genjutsu we could use: Mist clones are a genjutsu-based variant of the clone technique. Being illusions, they don't dissipate when touched. You just phase right through them. So how about we produce several and overlap them with our body? It would make telling which way we're moving our limbs a lot harder to do. And it would look cool as hell. We'd be this weird flickering phantasm of a thousand arms.

You rub off the rope marks, noticing the sky slowly turning orange. “So, we're good to go?”

“Just one thing I wanted to show you. Sasuke will be seeing it tomorrow. Speaking of which, I want the two of you to be half an hour late.”

“Why?” You and Sakura say in unison, halfway glancing at each other before you look away with a little spite of her.

The three of you walk a short way from the pillars you'd been tied to, heading over to a large black stone cut and polished to such a degree that you can see yourself, Kakashi, and Sakura reflected in the surface.
At a closer look, you see many names written in the surface as Kakashi stands beside it, the weight of an invisible burden seeming to make his shoulders tense. “Upon this stone are the names of countless heroes to the Hidden Leaf. It's here that the names of my own friends are written.” He looks down to you and Sakura.

You step forward and touch the stone with a small degree of awe. “There are so many. What did they all do?”

Sakura looks at the stone and then to Kakashi sensei, seeming to read the slightest bit of disturbance on his face, she frowns.

“They died in the line of duty, killed on the mission.” He smiles, more than a little pained, though he hides it rather well beneath that mask.

Feeling a sudden surge of guilt, you flinch away from contact with the stone slowly curling your fingers into a fist to push down the morose feeling of guilt welling in your gut.
“My dad's name isn't on here I bet.” You swallow, “But I bet his squad is.”

“It's the same case for me.” Kakashi keeps up his fake smile, stepping up to you and ruffling your hair, a rather familiar act.

You frown at it, looking back up to him, “What do you mean?”

“I'll see the two of you tomorrow.” Kakashi starts off first, leaving you standing there with questions.

You turn and yell after him,”Kakashi-sensei! What do you mean!?”

“Nothing Naruto, just remember. Ninjas that don't complete the mission are trash. But those that abandon their teammates are lower than that.”

Those words hit home and shut you up.

“It's still too soon to say, but so far? I don't see your father in you. Don't disappoint me.”
And with that, Kakashi flickers away, going off to who-knows-where, and leaving you and Sakura alone in training field three.

A gust sends Sakura's hair fluttering in the breeze, your own hair rustling gently, the slightest ripples running through your green suit.

“I guess I'll go home too.” Sakura says as she starts to walk off too,”See you tomorrow Naruto.”

After that, you start thinking on the way back. Maybe getting paired with Mr. Perfect and Sakura was a good deal. You get a chance to compare yourself with the best of the academy, see where you're at and look to surpass him. As for Sakura?
You smile a little besides yourself, you might get an old friend back. It quickly fades into a frown, if you can forgive her for ditching you.

You let out those thoughts bounce around your head for a while as you think of what to do next. If you want to pass up Sasuke, you're gonna need to study. Learn things that you never did at the academy... The prospect intimidates you a bit, you've never really been a scholar let alone a book person-but.

Back into the village's urban parts, you find yourself subject to the occasional condescending stare, but you don't pay them as much mind, keeping your head up, and displaying your headband proudly... However instead of looks or coolness, it's his defiance, or will to never give up.Now you may ask, 'why is that a bad thing?' Well the reason I say this is because Hinata takes it to the level of an almost obsession. She even canonically follows Naruto around while staying out of sight. People call Sakura out on being a fangirl, but Hinata exhibits much more fangirlish behavior with that one action. Another thing is that the reason she admires Naruto so for this quality is because she herself lacks it and wishes she had it. If taken to it's logical extreme you could say that Hinata has an idol like worship for Naruto. And that shit does not make for a healthy relationship at all.

It if for this that I say that while I would never sabotage it I am personally against the Hinata pairing route.
