You are Flight Lieutenant Julian Reber of the Royal Air Force. You joined the RAF to do battle against the BETA, aliens who threaten to exterminate humanity. Your current priority is the YEF-19 Excalibur, the RAF's new Tactical Surface Fighter. You've been doing live combat evaluations for a few weeks now and while you were off to a rocky start, things have gotten easier. Mostly because most of your problems can't be solved, so you don't need to bother trying.

For instance, you've concluded that the solution to your poor melee performance is to "learn to hit vital organs." Sensible advice, to be sure, but not entirely useful. Unfortunately, the combat dagger that came with the Black Widow's schematics is better than all your alternatives in terms of range and penetration, so you're stuck with it. The good news is, people usually don't use combat daggers against the BETA - most of the strains are too massive for the daggers to do much damage, and the combat halberds are everyone's primary melee weapons - so it's not that big a deal. It is, however, quite irritating.

You finish off your last report of the morning and stretch out your arms.

"This job was more fun when all I had to do was kill aliens," you say, stifling a yawn.

"Come now, it can't be that bad," Mary says. You joined her in her office, since you're scheduled to do engineering work after this.

"No, I'm having a complete crisis of faith," you say. "I finally stumbled upon a problem I can't solve by building a better machine. Unless you know how to make a combat dagger that shoots lasers."

"I'll add it to my list of things to do," Mary says. "Right after the Sangreal's spare magazines, the extra armour plating modules and the mechanized work tools."

Mary pours you a cup of hot tea, which you drink in one gulp. She immediately pours you a second cup so that you can actually enjoy the taste - if it's synthetic tea, the quality is surprisingly good - and puts away her own paperwork for the day.

"The modules we built have met our expectations, so we'll keep going with the basic design," Mary says. "Our big problem right now is time."

You haven't been spending much time in the main base lately, what with the R&D and the sorties, but you know what she means. You can't quite put your finger on it, but you can feel something's off. It hasn't been officially confirmed yet, but everyone knows an attack on Lyon is in the works. Everyone at the base knows it has to be done, but everyone also knows that the last attack on Lyon went sideways.

>"No point worrying about that now. Let's take a break before we get back to work."
>"I know what you mean. Let's get some work done now that we've finished with the paperwork."

"I know what you mean," you say. "Let's get some work done now that we've finished with the paperwork."

"Good," Mary says. "Vivian and I have a date tonight, and I don't want to be late."

There is only one possible response to this comment.

"Oh, fuck *me*."

"Not tonight, I'm afraid." Mary smiles. "My schedule is quite busy."

"I'm well aware of the schedule you three are keeping, thank you." You stand up and try to change the subject. "In any case, Sangreal. What's next?"

"Ammunitions, extra armour plates and the work tools," Mary says. "The hard part is probably over with, so this should be fairly straightforward."

"No one in their right mind would call building a workshop into a TSF 'straightforward,'" you say. "But I suppose that's why they pay me the big bucks. Let's go."

Mary leads you down to the engineering labs, where the staff are busy disassembling and reassembling the modules you've already designed. They do work, but they also need to be perfectly interchangeable, and that's quite a bit more complicated, especially since you haven't finished all the modules yet. You need to know what works, but you can't afford to be stuck with a preset model either. It's a delicate balancing act.

"Shall we begin?"

>"Let's get the ammunition out of the way."
>"Show me the armour plating."
>"What kind of tools do you want to install?"

"Let's get the ammunition out of the way," you say. "Maybe something based on the ammunition caches space forces drop?"

Mary hands you a pair of AR glasses used around the research labs and puts her own glasses on.

"I have the schematics for those somewhere in the files," Mary says. "We have a few different reloading systems in the database as well."

"My guess is, the hardest part will be servicing both the 36mm and 120mm ammo," you say. "And then we'll need to figure out how to service both explosive and armour-penetrating rounds for the 120mm."

"Don't you just love this job?" Mary points you to a empty station. "We can work here."

You look at the current reloading systems. They're not that complicated, and some of them are designed to be installed on TSFs already for obvious reasons, but they weren't designed to allow one TSF to reload another's assault cannons. Then you need to account for the fact that while weapons are mostly standardized, they aren't fully standardized on a global scale, and there are still some differences between assault cannons of different models.

Fortunately, you don't need to reload every gun in the world, just every gun in Europe. That's a lot easier. After all, European logistics are limited to understate things.

You're satisfied that the design you and Mary came up with will work. It won't be particularly elegant, but a battlefield is not a fashion show. It won't be practical to reload a gun right in the middle of a battle either, but that's to be expected.

"Yeah, I think this will do," you say.

"I'll have a proof of concept constructed and we'll move on from there," Mary says. "The basic design will work, and we might be able to refine it once we have a physical model to work with."

"So, lunch time?"

"That's what the clock says," Mary says. "Where to?"

>"Let's just grab something here. I don't feel like walking outside."

"The officer's mess? Elaine and Vivian might be there."

"Certainly," Mary says. "Just let me get my coat."

The two of you walk back to the barracks. It's that annoying part of winter when everything should be getting warmer, but the cold comes back seemingly at random. It's a good thing that the weather around Dover is relatively mild. Regular blizzards and snowstorms wouldn't do you or your TSF any favours.

You and Mary grab a tray of synthetic food. It looks bland, but "bland" actually counts as praise when it comes to food, especially in winter. You easily spot Elaine and Vivian, who are busy chatting at a table by one of the windows.

"Hello, ladies," you say as you sit down. Mary takes the seat next to you.

"Hello, Julian," Elaine says. "How's engineering treating you."

"Oh, splendidly." You take a bite of something off your plate. Yeah, it's bland all right. "It's amazing how many problems just go away when you're apathetic enough."

"I wish that worked for me," Vivian says. "Which reminds me, I need to consult you on a technical matter later."

"Not a problem, I'll be at the research hangar," you say. "Anything specific you'd like to know?"

"It has to do with the devices you built in Italy," Vivian says. "I'm afraid I can't say more right now. I still need some paperwork to get through."

It sounds like command wants to use that tech to retake the Lyon Hive. It sounds like an obvious plan on the surface, but there's no guarantee it'll work twice. Even if it does work twice, there's no guarantee it'll work a third time and Lyon won't be the end of the line for you. Still, that's something you'll need to think about later.

"That's fine," you say. "I'll just keep it in mind."

"I almost envy you, you know," Elaine says. "You're locked up in R&D, while I'm stuck here at the base with all the grumbling. It's... complicated sometimes. Everyone knows a Hive infiltration is coming, but the last year had its ups and downs. There are a lot of things that can go wrong."

>"People need to deal with it. It's just part of the job."

"We're getting ready now to make sure things don't go wrong further down the line. I know it's stressful, but it's necessary," you say. "Beyond that, just treat it like business as usual and focus on the mission."

"I suppose that's true," Elaine says. "But that doesn't make it any easier."

"If this job was easy, we wouldn't be getting all that fancy hazard pay." You chuckle.

"Wait, you get hazard pay?" Vivian asks. "My paycheck's been the same since I signed up."

"Yeah, I get a 10% bonus on top of my paygrade, with another 15% per combat hour," you say. It sounds like a lot, but it really isn't. The RAF isn't exactly swimming in Sterling.

"Goddamn it!" Vivian practically shoots out of her chair. "I need to talk to HR. Mary, I'll see you later."

The three of you watch her run off.

"She's not going to get backpay, is she?" Mary asks.

"I'm not so sure," Elaine says. "Vivian might be able to pull it off."

Once your meal is finished, you accompany Mary back to her research hangar for another round of R&D.

"Can you show me the tools you want to integrate into the Sangreal?"

"You've already seen most of them," Vivian says, waving her arm across the lab at the robotic arms and welders she has installed. "Then there's the standard equipment we use to perform maintenance on TSF."

"That's... obvious, I suppose," you say. "What's the biggest hurdle?"

"Holding the spare parts in place," Mary says. "The TSF can hold armour plates in place easily enough with its hands, but if we're not careful, it'll be harder to for the robotic arms to actually do the repairs."

"In other words, clutter," you say. "Yeah, this is going to be complicated, but probably not impossible."

"The obvious solution is to just get rid of the hands," you say.

The two of you pause for a moment.

"Good idea," Mary says. "Let's go with that."

You decide to replace the TSF's hand with what essentially amounts to a large work table. Powerful electromagnets can hold armour plates and spare parts in place in order for repairs to take place and it's a simple matter to add welding arms and electric screwdrivers. It should be sturdy enough for normal emergency repairs, but it'll be fragile during combat. A stray Tank would be more than enough to wreck the entire repair platform.

Of course, if the Sangreal ends up in combat, it's screwed anyway.

"I like it," Mary says. "It's not practical for combat, but that won't be a problem."

"It seems almost boring, to be honest," you say. "Still, it turned out to be an easy job. I'm always thankful for those."

You lounge back in your chair just as Vivian enters the room, looking pissed.

"No luck with the backpay?" Mary asks.

"No, I sorted everything out fine," Vivian says. "They'll just double my hazard pay until it all balances out. It's just irritating to deal with."

"I am officially impressed," you say, swivelling around to face Vivian. "So, what can I advise you on?"

"The RAF wants to use the device you created to attract the BETA and lure them into a trap," Vivian says. "The problem is that we're not sure if it will work, but we are reasonably sure that it won't work again."

"In other words, if we deploy it now, we probably won't be able to use it again," you say.

"And that's only half the problem," Vivian says. "This will come out of Project Round Table's procurement."

"Which means we won't have the funding and resources to mass-produce the Sangreal in time for the Lyon Hive Infiltration," Mary says. "Wonderful."

"You're certain there's no way to get both," you ask Mary.

"Certain," she says. "I know the numbers like the back of my hand. It'd put us far enough over budget that we won't be able to justify getting both. Economies of scale in TSF production makes things complicated."

"So you need my advice on what equipment to include in your plan," you say.

"That's right," Vivian says.

>"Mass produce the Sangreal. It'll be more reliable in the long run."
>"Let's set up a trap with the device I created. We need a victory, and we need it now."

>Mechanically, the Sangreal's modules will negate various types of failures, crit failures and BETA crit successes, depending on how many Sangreals you have and what their modules are.
>The psi-emitter will negate the roll bonus the BETA get for being near a Hive and make your rolls easier, but it'll only work once. If you use it at Lyon, you won't be able to use it against another Hive.

>>
>>32210523
Without spoiling anything, I can say that you have enough reactor parts now for most practical purposes. Taking the Lyon reactor intact would serve a different purpose, and carry certain risks.

It should be fairly obvious once you get there.
>>
>>32210606
In that case I'd vote for psi emitter. We can get Sangreals for the next hive, along with whatever goodies we steal from lyon.

>"Mass produce the Sangreal. It'll be more reliable in the long run."
>>
>>32210606
BRAINSSSS?
>>
>>32210327
"Let's go with the Sangreal then," you say. "It'll be more useful in the long run, and I don't want to waste a trap that might come in useful later."

Ordering a prototype for mass production is probably not a good idea - can you even call it a prototype if it's being mass produced? - but you don't have a lot of options. The Hive infiltration could take week, which makes the Sangreal a lot more useful than a one-off trap.

"I'll let the Group captain know," Vivian says. "We were hoping for a miracle weapon, but..."

"We don't need miracles," Mary says. "The Sangreal will extend the survivability of TSFs in the field and it should be more than enough to support a Hive infiltration. It's the best decision."

"I appreciate your faith in the TSF platform, but I can't help but feel hurt," you say. "I built that device, you know, and I have a lot of pride for the effort I put into it."

"Oh, please," Mary says. "We both know that thing was made of scraps and duct tape."

"Of course it was," you say. "That's what made it impressive."

"If you'll excuse me," Vivian interrupts you before you can keep going. "I need to make a report. Mary, I'll be back once I'm done."

"I'll go pick up a bottle of vodka while you're there," Mary says.

Vivian returns to her work, leaving you alone with Mary again. You take a look at the clock and then at your remaining workload. You can probably keep going, but it'll be a mostly sleepless night if you do, and things aren't so urgent that you need to finish this by tomorrow. On the other hand, you could rest here or go back to your own room in the barracks.

>Keep working. You should be able to sort out the extra armour plating on your own.

"I'm going back to my room," you say. "I'll see you in the morning."

"Good night," Mary says. "Although mine will probably be better."

"Ha. Ha. Ha. This is how I laugh when I don't care."

You absentmindedly wave goodbye as you leave, unsure whether or not Mary is actually looking at you. You stop by the officer's mess for dinner. It's slightly less disappointing than lunch.

You enter your room and see Elaine sitting at her desk, along with a pile of papers which she is diligently reading and filling out. She gives you a glance as you enter.

"Welcome back, Julian," she says. "I thought you were going to keep working right through the night."

"I thought about it, but my work isn't urgent." You nod at her pile of papers. "Late night reports?"

"Family business," she says. "I need to at least make sure my sister has enough to get by. And mother, I suppose. I also need to invest some money into some companies associated with the military. The good news is, I can send it through priority mail and I don't get charged since it's sorted as state affairs."

"Good to know." You sit down on Elaine's bed. "How are you holding up?"

"I'm fine," she says. "Some days, I'm not sure if I should be doing this, but it's not so bad. It feels good, having something to do outside killing BETA. I guess it reminds me I have a future after this war is over."

You sit silently and watch her finish her paperwork and put it away. You barely recognize the woman who molested you in front of a few dozen officers and snuck into your bed out of desperation. After about a year, it's nice to see Elaine moving forward and acting responsibly.

Which doesn't mean *you* need to act responsibly.

"I'm turning in for bed," you say. "I've got an early day tomorrow. This thing is almost finished."

"'Night. I'll use the shower once you're done."

You clean up, get changed into your physical training clothes and get into your bed. You spend the next few hours with your eyes closed, going over the design of the Sangreal until mental exhaustion finally knocks you out.

You wake up in the morning to the sound of your alarm. You quickly turn it off to give Elaine a chance to get more sleep. She'll probably get up soon after you, but she doesn't need to be up as early as you do.

You change into your service uniform and get back out to the research hangar. The mess isn't open for breakfast, but the hangar's cafeteria is, so you eat a random pastry and swallow three cups of tea to get your morning started.

The only thing left to do is the extra armour plating module. You might be able to finish it yourself, or you could fetch Mary. She and Vivian are probably done with their private time.

Haha, welp. Looks like I spoke too soon.

Blueball intensifies.
>See if Mary's awake.

Yep. Check Vivian's spoils. Maybe we'd get lucky and she'd give a pity-BJ or something.

...yeah, nah. Like that'll happen.

They'll probably just make out in front of julian. You know, rubbing a little salt into the wound.

While you could probably finish this on your own, it's Mary's project and you'd like to have her with you in case you make any mistakes.

You walk up to Mary's room and announce your presence without being too loud about it. You hear the door unlock and Mary opens the door, wrapped in a towel. Behind her, you spy Vivian, covered in bedsheets and sound asleep with one arm hanging limply off the side of the bed.
"Good morning, Julian," Mary says. "Ready to finish the work on the Sangreal?"

"Yeah, I just came by to pick you up," you say. "It should all be straightforward, but I don't want to take any chances."

"Right, I'll be down in a minute."

You go back down to the research lab and pull the files on the extra armour plating. It's the basic and most important function of the Sangreal, so you'll need to have at least one permanent container with armour in it, but you'll be able to supplement it with additional modules if you pull this off.

Mary approaches you from behind.

"Any ideas," she asks.

There's already quite a bit of work done on the containers for the extra armoured plates, and it's no challenge to get them to fit into your existing modules. In fact, you manage to expand the size of your containers without compromising the TSF's weight or cluttering it up. The end result should significantly increase the odds of survival of a damaged TSF.

"That was a lot easier than I thought it would be," you say. "And far more impressive."

"I agree," Mary says. "Now I just need to build a prototype to make sure everything works the way it's supposed to and send the blueprints off for mass production as soon as possible."

"No evaluations for this one?"

"Nothing beyond the basics needed to ensure functionality," Mary says. "I'm afraid we don't have that much time."

"So the first field test is going to be the Hive infiltration," you ask.

"That's correct," Mary answers.

- The YK-21's additional armour plates will allow TSFs to remain operational after suffering external damage to their frame.
- The YK-21's repair toolset will allow it to perform emergency repairs on TSFs during battle, increasing the survival rates of damaged TSFs.

That's it for today. Next thread will be Wednesday at 7PM EST. We'll be planning the infiltration of the Lyon Hive.

The thread after that will be about collecting as many death flags as possible before the actual Hive infiltration, assuming you want an XP boost. I'm still trying to determine if getting laid before a major mission is a death flag or a victory flag, since it's been used for both.
>>
>>32212470
Almost getting laid, but then promising to continue after, is definitely a death flag.

Thanks for running.
>>
>>32212470
I wouldn't be surprised if Julian ended up croaking even without getting laid.

You know, maybe we should donate some of our sperm before the whole infiltration. That's what the girls need from him, anyway. He can cure that blueball himself, the girls get their babby, problem solved.
>>
>>32212470
I prefer the latter, we should get EXP for it
>>
>>32212470

Given the series we're in, going on a major mission is more or less a death flag in and of itself.

We'd have to lose all of the supplementary cast in waves first before the core ladies are at risk, though, so maybe that's not the safest way of going about it.

...and do artificial pineapples still count?
>>
>>32212470
Death flags? No matter the bad end or how fuck humanity is, Julian never gonna die.

He is james bond, macgyver, mobius 1 AND Cipher at the same time.
>>
>>32212655
Apparently he can also get rid of his sex drive. He's more cyborg than human, at this point.
>>
We all know Hall is going to die next infiltration. Poor guy gets almost no screen time. Kiss that +1 exp we get from him goodbye.

>inb4 darth julian
>>
>>32212729
He isn't human or alive. He just a weapon the humans accidentally made. No matter the task, he will be victories.

Defeating countless BETA, making new weapons, stealing enemy tech or reactors, disabling a NUCLEAR BOMB, infiltration.

The ladies aren't helping him keep his humanity. They just peeling it bit by bit.
>>
>>32212470
With how badly we've been blueballed and cockblocked and how long its fucking dragged on it should be a victory flag because fuck me, its not even a funny joke at this point, its just sad and disappointing.

I cannot fucking wait for the Lyon infiltration to be fucking done with so we can finally fuck our girls and move on and get some progress for fucking once.
