Your name is Michael Dunkin, and you now work for the Inquisition. Previously you were a sergeant in the 291st Cadian Shock Troopers, but now you find yourself in the company of Inquisitor Christina Massey of the Ordos Xenos. After saving her life at the cost of your men and your life (the old one, at least), you've been officially proclaimed a dead hero and recruited into her retinue. Now, with your new life and future in her hands, you're tasked with looking after Christina's well being. And whatever else that entails.

As you finally begin your first mission your initial impression of the mining planet Dwimos is a morbid one. The planet's capitol, Aleso, shows signs of battle, but not a single soul is to be found. That is, until you delve into the city's PDF garrison and find a survivor.

"So what happens now?" You ask, looking between Christina and the man laying on the table. Mikel's looking him over, but Jami still has his rifle ready just in case.

"We stick to the plan," She says, looking the dataslate in her hand over. "Which is to say, we find out what happened here. However we can."

She gives the crazed grunt a moment's attention before turning to you, and though you can't see her face you begin to feel that familiar weight in your gut.

"It looks like Father Mikel has thing's handled," She notes. "Would you like to hear what our agent had to say, or could you try and coax something out of our new friend for me?"

"You said it. Mikel has him covered," You say. "Let's hear it."

With a nod Christina taps in a handful of keys before the thing chimes and the screen brightens. After a few moments of silent reading the Inquisitor lets out an unimpressed tut.

"Lovely," She sighs. "It seems that, for the most part, he was more interested in detailing an 'Allison' and her hobbies rather than the planet itself. When he does it's always the same boring drab, and then... oh ho? What's this?"

You consider the urge the tell her to hurry up, but then you decide you feel like living a bit longer.

"An entire team of miners perished in an accidental detonation a week and a half ago. Tragic, but not entirely unheard of. Except, a few days later the remains of another team emerged from the mines, babbling of beasts and moving shadows."

Though initially sarcastic, her tone darkens as she reads on.

"A patrol sent in the next day were ambushed underground, being overrun by... something... before they could say what it was. The city was placed on alert and he considered activating the beacon, but the log is cut short. The final log... oh, Lawrence, you poor fool..."

Shaking her head, she hands the dataslate over to you. With hesitance you look it over, but soon regret it.

'They're everywhere. The entire city is gone and it's down to us, but it won't be long before they get in here too. We've failed. I've failed.

Lady Massey, if you're reading this, stay away from the mines. Destroy it. Destroy the city. Destroy it all before th'

It cuts off without anything else, and with a stoic nod you return it to the Inquisitor.

"Better and better, eh?" She chuckles dryly. "I suppose it's time we checked in on our friend."

"Yes, ma'am," You nod, and with that you make your way back over to the group.

"You're still fresh from the Guard, so you probably know how to handle the standard rank and file," She says as you walk. "If you want, I could let you try and take a crack at him first. If not, Mikel or myself will handle it."

"I can try," You tell her. "No promises, though."

She seems pleased by your answer, allowing you to take things from there. Alpha quiets down from what little talk that had started as you near, and as you look the PDF trooper over you see he's calmed down drastically. Mikel steps aside when you near, moving instead to cover the entrance with Gabriel.

"Trooper," You say after a quick glance at the man's rank. "Trooper, you in there?"

His eyes fly open at once, rapidly moving about before settling on you.

"Answer me, Trooper," You say, a bit more firmly. "You got a name?"

"J-Jacklo," The man answers, flinching at your tone and swallowing hard. "Trooper Jacklo, sir."

"Good," You nod. "Think you can sit up for me?"

With a bit of effort and help from you he does so, swinging his legs off the table and looking around him with tired eyes.

"Give me a status report, Jacklo," You order him. "What's the situation?"

"FUBAR, sir," He mumbles, giving a humorless laugh that you join in.

"No shit, Trooper," You say. "Where's your CO? Can I talk to him?"

"Ack Ack... he... he told me to hold the armory. No matter what, he said, hold it. So I did."

"What happened to him?"

"The Daemons got him." Jacklo shudders involuntarily.

Most of Alpha tense at that, and you spy Mikel forming the Aquila at the doorway. Next to you, Christina remains silent with arms crossed.

"What Daemons?" You ask, feeling the bile rise in your throat as you say the word.

"The shadows," Jacklo shakes his head quickly, as if fly's buzzed around him. "They got him. They got everyone. Sarge, Bensani, Alman... they're all dead. It's just me now."

"No, it's not," You assure him, placing a hand on his shoulder and squeezing. "Help's here. We're getting you out of here."

At first he doesn't seem to register your words, but when he finally does his eyes go wide. A faint glimmer of hope forms.

Then a clock strikes somewhere, and then another, and then another.

All around the room the sounds of dataslates, mechanical clocks, and even wrist watches go off seemingly all at once. Impressively, all of Alpha and Mikel are ready to start killing something in a flash. Christina, meanwhile, only lets her hand trail down to a compact bolter at her side.

The one most impacted by this noise, possibly because of the lack of hearing protection, is Jacklo. The man is almost instantly thrown back into a panic as he jumps to his feet, head rapidly turning back and forth.

"No, no, no, no, NO!" He half begs/half sobs. "Not yet. NOT NOW!"

"What's going on, Trooper?" Christina finally speaks up, and he swirls around to face her.

"Sunset," He hisses. "Sunset brings night. Night brings darkness. DARKNESS BRINGS SHADOWS!"

Before you can stop him he bounds past and out the door, but Christina seems to have already forgotten about him. Instead she turns away, pressing two fingers to the side of her helmet, and you hear her over Warlock's line.

"Commander, status," She says, her tone surprisingly level.

"We've cleared most of the city, ma'am," Vincent almost sounds bored. "Not a damn thing found. I'm moving up with first and second platoon to the mines to-"

"Pull back," She says in a tone that brook no objection. Vincent, for his part, doesn't flinch.

"Aye, ma'am. We're on our... the feth is that noise?"

"Move it, Alpha!" Roxy barks as Christina sets off, the others desperately trying to keep pace with her.

Christina is in what you guess is upgraded Sororitas armor, not quite Astartes level but a close second. Heavy boots thunder down the hall as she runs, and somehow you find yourself keeping pace while the others lag behind.

You arrive at the main entrance again, but even before that you can hear the distinct crack of lasfire. However, there's something else. Something familiar, but also foreign.

Screaming; utterly unhuman.

In the courtyard in front of the garrison, armsmen are firing their weapons into the air as dozens of dark figures circle overhead in the night sky. One of them swoops low and slams into one of the men, tearing him to pieces before being brought down by the dead man's comrades.

"Lieutenant!" Christina calls, and you look up to see a number of the creatures heading straight for the two of you.

You put the thing down with a three round burst, causing it to crumple into a mess of limbs at your feet. However, your job is far from over and you quickly turn to face Christina.

For her part, she's holding her own.

One of the creatures lay twitching on the ground, it's hammerhead-shaped cranium pulped and spewing a bright white fluid around it. Though her bolter sits a few feet away, she's trying to keep the last one at bay, the thing snapping inches away from her visor.

Unable to get a clear shot, you put aside your hellgun and retrieve your trusty combat knife. You move quick, careful to avoid the creature's swishing tail before you leap onto it's back, grabbing it by the throat and stabbing.

The thing lacks any visible eyes, so instead you take your knife and yank hard, slicing the thing's throat open. You manage to keep your footing as it throws you off, letting out one muffled snarl before finally dying.

Christina gets to her feet, armor now painted in alien blood, and grabs her bolter.

"A bit messy, but appreciated all the same, Lieutenant," She tells you as Alpha and Mikel arrive.

With the current battle keeping yourself more than occupied, it's hard to stop and think. A number of armsmen have been killed or maimed, beginning to pull back to the PDF building itself. Though alien corpses litter the grounds, it seems more are still flying about.

"Commander?" Christina calls. "Commander, answer me!"

However, despite her command, Vincent's voice remains missing from the vox.

"We should fall back inside," Mikel suggests.

"Agreed," She nods. "Everyone inside!"

From behind you, however, you hear someone shout. Turning, you see Jonah struggling with Jacklo, who seems hellbent on reaching the console the Alpha member had been using before.

As the armsmen pull back you rush to help Jonah, grabbing the PDF Trooper by the arm.

"Stand to, soldier!" You order, and he half-turns to look at you.

"No, no!" He begs. "Light must comb-"

Distracted, Jonah silences him with the butt of his hellgun. With a whimper, Jacklo falls to the floor and Jonah pushes him under the desk with his boot. When he sees your stare, he simple shrugs and goes about working on the doors.

It's a short but bloody fight as the armsmen, previously a platoon of nearly forty, lose over half of that before the doors finally closes. Even then, a fair number of them are wounded in one way or another, and Dominic is clutching at a bloody gash on his left arm.

"Status," Christina demands, reloading her bolter.

"Threat pacified," Roxy says. "Momentarily."

As she speaks, the thud of bodies being flung against the doors can be heard.

"Well, what are we waiting for?" You ask. "Let's call in an orbital strike from the Antebellum and be done with it."

"If only it were that easy," She sighs. "Not only is Vincent and the rest of Warlock missing, but I'd also rather not blow up a planet today. Some of the stuff this place mines isn't exactly the hardiest of minerals."

"Yeah, cause it's the rocks we gotta worry about," Dominic mutters.

"So we're stuck here for the night," You say, resigned. "How long do they last here?"

"Ten hours," She says. "So I think we'd best keep our wits about us and dig in. We'll see to our wounded, and I'll see if Delmar has heard anything from the others."

With that she sets off down a hall, leaving the rest of the group scattered about the entrance. Roxy and her people are around the desk, with Mikel looking at Dominic's arm, while the armsmen medics look after their own.

'Channel Beta 023," She says, and without a word you switch to it.

You both stop at a T-intersection, with plenty of open ground to see something coming. Christina, in her armor and bolter holstered, doesn't seem overly concerned.

"Captain," She says. "Tell me you're seeing this."

"I am seeing many things, my lady," Delmar answers with only a hint of static. "Few of them good."

"Give me the damage, first," She sighs.

"First and second platoon have gone to ground in the sewer system, though I question the Commander's sanity with that choice. Third was regrouping at a hospital... and has yet to report back. Fourth is with you. Whatever remains of it," Delmar's concern is clear. "Are you and the others well, Lady Massey?"

"As well as we can be," She answers. "What is it looking like outside?"

"The creatures are covering the city, but our men have killed many. From what our scans show, they are all emerging from the base of the mountains nearby."

However, despite your sarcasm, something does indeed strike you. You consider ignoring it, but then again you've got nothing but time on your hands.

"Jacklo was obsessing over the lights," You point out as you make your way back. "It might just be him having cracked a bit, so I'm not willing to bet anyone's lives on it... but consider that they only became an issue at sunset. It might mean that they're sensitive to the light. If we have any flares, it might be a good idea to keep them handy."

"Very perceptive," She nods. "I'll make sure the others know. There might be hope for you yet."

You think of asking her what she means by that, but by then you're both back at the entrance and you decide against it.

The main threat is at least stalled for the moment, but now you have a new problem. Half a dozen armsmen are sporting various wounds that leave them laying on the ground or propped up against the wall in varying states of consciousness.

"Dunno about the rest of you, but I'm not sitting on my ass the whole night," Roxy announces, jumping off of the desk. "I'm hunting down a medbay. Any volunteers?"

Jami and Gabriel do so, as well as a pair of Armsmen. Meanwhile, Jackso seems to have come back around and is currently mumbling through a conversation with Mikel.

With your suspicions fresh in mind you approach Jackso, noting with mild interest that Christina follows behind. The Trooper is already sporting a black eye to go along with his already ragged look. When he sees you he shrinks into the seat behind the desk, as if waiting for you to start hitting him.

"Trooper," You greet him. "How are you holding up?"

"Been better," He mutters, eyes firmly on the floor.

Sighing, you lean against the desk and try not to look threatening. Considering your gear, you doubt it works very well.

"I'm sorry about what happened, but you needed to get yourself in order," You tell him. "What were you even trying to do?"

"Shine His Light," Jackso answers, sounding distressed. "Light to burn away the darkness."

"Have you done this before?" You ask.

"Yes, yes," He quickly nods. "When they grow too strong at the gate."

"Could you do it now?"

His head shoots up and he stares at you, a healthy dose of caution and distrust in his eyes as he looks you over.

"Could I?" He questions you.

"Before you do anything please explain to me what you are doing. What is the light? how do you activate it? what powers it? What is it's duration and effect? Trooper, you have what sounds to be a potent weapon, but like any powerful weapons it needs to be understood."
>>
>>32211798
"Trooper, you've done good work holding out as long as you have. I need you to keep it together a little longer. Brief us on what you need to do. Once we have a clear grasp of the situation, we'll see if we can try this or not."

It might sound like I'm overusing the military jargon, but we need to give him something to hang onto and center himself around. Discipline and duty are a soldier's truest weapons.

I wasn't. I was just making sure it got thrown out there IC before we forgot. It would suck not to act on it just because we all took the knowledge for granted OOC.

Also, I actually haven't, though I'm sure googling it would've given me the gist of it anyway.

There's an old quote in medicine "When you hear hoofbeats, think of horses not zebras". While I think you are correct that these are floodlights that the npc is talking about, in 40k-verse it pays to spell things out clearly just in case it's not actually a horse but a zebra.

"His Light, huh?" You ask. "How fast can it charge?"

"Just... need the console," He said, going sullen once more. "I just... wanted to help..."

"Can you extend it past the garrison?"

"No. Only here."

You look over to Christina, who gives a small shrug. Seems she's willing to let you make the final call. Great.

"Alright, Jacklo," You tell him. "Light it up."

For the first time he smiles, and with a new found energy he pulls the chair up to the console and starts it up. Jonah looks over and seems ready to intervene, but a shake of the head from Christina halts him.

You think you can hear Jackso mutter the Litany of Righteousness as he works, setting up the console and moving surprisingly fast with steady and nimble fingers. By then most of the armsmen have caught on and watch with varying looks of interest and worry.

After around a minute of work, he looks up to you with hopeful eyes. With a nod from you he hits one final key and looks toward the door. Following his gaze, everyone else does the same.

You listen...

...and are rewarded with the satisfying sound of the pain-ridden screams of the xenos outside, the banging against the door coming to a sudden halt. Like the sounds of a flock of birds taking flight, the screams grow fainter after several minutes, but don't outright fade completely.

A short while later Roxy returns with her troop to report her findings. She initially planned on simply bringing whatever supplies she could, but Jacklo hesitantly says he can draw some of the backup power to get the medbay going once more.

(Cont.)
>>
>>32212650

With that settled the wounded are carted off by the medics and Mikel, leaving the remaining able armsmen, eighteen total, to hold down the fort alongside Alpha.

"We've got a long night ahead of us," Roxy tells you as the group begins to break up into shifts. "I've got first watch with some of the others. You and Lady M should get some shut eye."

>Fair point.

"Fair point," You tell her. "Don't have too much fun without me."

"No promises, LT," Roxy grins.

However, before you leave, you stop by the desk once more.

"Good job, trooper," You tell Jacklo. "You make the Emperor proud."

Jacklo beams at this, straightening ever so slightly as you and Christina head off to find a suitable place to sleep. Though you manage to find a barracks, Christina is hesitant to remove her armor.

"As comfortable as those beds look," She sighs. "I think I'll have to choose safety over comfort."

"Can't go wrong with that," You nod.

Since her armor would no doubt crush the framework of the bedding, Christina instead finds a stretch of wall to lean back against on the floor. She probably isn't thrilled with these accommodations, but to her credit she doesn't complain. Much.

"Want me to grab you a mattress?" You ask. "Not great, but better than nothing."

"Thoughtful, but no thank you," Christina chuckles.

Though you said it as a joke, you're more than willing to do so if she asked. Ah well.

You bring a Lamp-Pack free from your backpack and set it down between the two of you, giving your armor lights some down time. Christina gives a thankful nod, having placed her helmet down next to her.

"So," You say, finding a similar spot nearby and doing the same. "What's the SOP for this kind of thing?"

"SOP?" She asks, brow furrowing.

"Standard Operation Procedure," You inform her.

"Standard..." She mouths the words a few times as if putting them to memory. "Cataloging live specimens, finding out their language if possible, threat assessment. I think we've done the last one rather well."

"Is 'Big, silver, and scary' a category?"

"After this? I'll make it myself."

Sharing a goodhearted, if somewhat tired, laugh, you both drift off to sleep.

For you, sleep is both a simple yet difficult thing. On one hand, you can sleep anytime and just about anywhere. On the other, as you've begun to find out, sleep also brings on various things. Though whether they're dreams, nightmares, or memories you're yet to be sure.

Even after the most recent events, you don't find any sort of increase or decrease in your fitful dreaming. Perhaps a small improvement, or perhaps you're just too tired to care.

You're woken a while later by a thwack to the head.

Roxy stands over you, hands on her hips and helmet off as well. She stifled a yawn, and signals for you to get up, offering you a hand.

"Up and at'em, LT," She says in a hushed tone. "Your turn."

"Pretty good, all things considered," She shrugs. "I'd say things are quiet, but those little shits love to make noise."

"So who else is standing watch?" You ask her.

"Mikel, Jonah, and a couple armsmen," She answers. "I'll keep Lady M company while you're gone."

"Careful," You warn her. "She's a talkative one."

You both look over to the Inquisitor, head tilted back and mouth just slightly open.

"I think I can handle it," She assures you.

With that you take your leave, finding Jacklo snoring quietly underneath the desk. Jonah is sitting on the floor nearby, putting his hellgun back together. He looks up from his work long enough to acknowledge your presence, then quietly returns to his work.

Seeing Jonah go about his kit, you decide you should get a bit more intimate with your own hellgun. Sitting down on the opposite end of the door, you place your rifle down and begin dissembling it.

It's not too much unlike a lasgun, just a bit more powerful and bulkier to compensate. You wonder about the time, but don't see anything that could give it away. Seeing as your companion isn't feeling overly chatty either, you continue your maintenance in silence.

You're almost a bit let down that you've yet to use your grenade launcher, but you're sure the chance will arise before long. The ammo for it is still safely secured, and you ponder asking Jonah about his own upgrades.

Then you hear something and your head shoots up.

Judging by Jonah's equally rigid posture he heard it as well, but wasn't quite sure of the source.

"Did you...?" The trooper asks, and just like that the dam breaks.

Behind you, beyond the door, you hear something.

Lasfire.
