Chapter strength: 685 brothers
Current location: Farness Beta orbit, Cadian Sector
Chapter wealth: 1188 Wealth
Date: late 343.M41
+++
It was late in 343.M41 before we reached Farness Beta. By then, war was bifurcating the Cadia subsector, and armies of sheer
horror were spewing out of the Eye of Terror. Like a whirlpool of fire, the Eye dominated the skies of most gate-worlds, distended and
angry, flaring more savagely than at any time in living memory. Every flash and pulse of its maelstrom was another warp hole
opening, another flotilla of death unleashed. That spring was known as the Staunch Holding of the Cadian Gate, and entered the
history books, as every scholar knows.
During the first months of 343, the Cadians saw off the greatest incursion of Chaos suffered in three hundred years.
It was almost as if the Archenemy knew something. This isn't going to be easy. My new allies, Ghosts of Retribution, proved to be both resourceful and reliable. I hope that elite Astartes attachment they agreed to send with me will be enough to deal with whatever horrors Quixos holds up his sleeve. I am especially glad that their Chapter Master decided to come with us. He is a very peculiar, completely not like the others of his kind that I have dealt with. He seems to be quite sentimental and thoughtful, but nonetheless he appears to be extremely capable and thinks on a larger scale than just killing his target. This could prove to be a double edged sword, he will not be easy asset to handle. Note to self: check his origins, if we survive. - Gregor Eisenhorn's personal notes, 301.343.M41

Name: Farness Beta
Location: Sector Cadia, fringes of the Eye of Terror
Type: Barren world, ecosystem destroyed by some terrible cataclysm
+++
Raikus Thorn, Commander of Thracian 51st meets you and all of the Inquisitors at the main meeting hall of "Graceful Guardian" and presents you his report:
>Milords, our planetary scans have revealed full extent of Quixos' operations on Farness Beta. It seems that there are a few different complexes scattered around the planets' northern pole. It is hard to estimate their size due to the fact that it seems, that most of the facilities are locted underground. Our probes have delivered pictures of numerous slaves toiling in the massive mines in a few locations, however the biggest concentration of activity seems to be at location codenamed Alpha-Primaris, if you'll examine orbital scans, you'll see that there is a massive hole by the side of a mining complex, which seems to be aroung 3km deep. We weren't successful in determining what is the goal of this operation, but it seems important. On the ground enemy bases are mostly protected by light infantry, we have seen some tanks, but those are very few, maybe a squadron or two tops. Enemy complexes:
>Alpha-Primaris - main complex, extremely strong defences, mostly located underground
>Alpha-Secundus - secondary complex, barracks and habitation blocks, estimated population - 50 to 60 thousand.
>Beta-Primaris - A mining base 224 km away, medium sized
>Beta-Secundus - A small starport located in the mountains 50km away
>Beta-Tertius - large slave colony as well as building site for something that reminds a temple, estimated population - 100k
>Beta-Quatrus - some sort of short range Anti-Orbital defence site, moderate defences on the ground, doesn't pose much threat
+Available actions+
>Orbital bombardment
>Close range bombardment
>Massive infantry deployment
Commander Thorn himself is in favour of intensive bombardment, followed by full deployment.
What shall be your orders?

I support Commander Thorn. Obliterate the sites from orbit, then re-obliterate the sites using atmospheric bombers, then re-re-obliterate with tanks and infantry.
>>
>>32187326
Excuse me Commander fucking thorn, but if their shit is underfuckingground then jesus christ, won't that just be a huge fucking mistake, not only alerting them of our presence but fucking having quatrus fire on us as well?
What we need is a fuckin stealthy drop in, place in a fuckin signal for you guys to bomb the shit out of, not to fucking mention of he's using Alpha+ whatever psykers for chaos means, then why the fuck wouldn't he be able to split this space ship in half as soon as he sees us?
We need to know where the fackin enemy is you stupid cunt before we start firing, but sure, after that, fucking level the entire world.
In fact, why don't we just fucking break the planet in half? Not fucking like you cunts would care about the stupid dicks on this world anyway

Look at it this way. If we completely atomise everything on the surface, we know Quixos must be in the underground facility.

Then we simply surround the facility with the Imperial Guard and move in, purging all in our path.
>>
>>32187356
Level fucking everything
>>

>>32187387
And then we alert Quixos to our presence and then he can start by summoning daemons from the hundreds of thousand of slaves you just killed by using those Alpha+ psykers.
Oh, not to mention the heavily super-guarded-underground base will be permanently on high alert, and the Imperial Guard will ever so fucking slowly take it over, at a rate which would be stupid considering we need speed.
So if we're going for intensive bombardment, we need to break this planet in half, not half-ass it.
Otherwise we need to investigate these sites properly.
>>
>>32187356

a) utter annihilation
b) stealth infiltration + beacon placement.

Suggest taking the starport to better land our troops
>>
>>32187503
>>32187429
I'm sort of assuming her knows we're here. It's difficult to hide an entire Imperial fleet in orbit.
>>
>>32187503
I vote for A. After casting visions to find quixos' location, don't involve anyone else because we're protected from response by Darrion's helmet.
>>
>>32187503
C: Perform Psyker activities to try and find active enemy psykers, not just Quixos.
Visions, in fact.
>>
>>32187582
I'll second this
>>
>>32187326
We have the high ground, so barring sorcery we should be able to dictate the engagement. Hail all imperial forces and order them to stand down under the combined authority of our inquisitors.
>>
>>32187582
>>32187588
So two things:
1) In the past having other psykers help us helped us succeed and make it less likely to perils (per Skargan)
2) Shouldn't the helmet interfere as much with our own psychic abilities as the enemy?
>>
>>32187699
1) Regardless of how much it may reduce perisl I do NOT want to expose ANYONE to alpha+ psykers.
2) Since Darrion's Helmet is the only reason I'm prepared to let Chapter Master do it, that's a good point.

Power threshold for Visions with question:
>Where is Quixos?
would be 30 Psychic Power points.

Trying to open yourself to the warp to sense Alpha+ psykers on the planet would require a successful willpower test, but it would open you up for a counter attack.

To cast visions with question:
"How many Alpha+ psykers are there and where are they located"
Would require 20 Psychic Power points.

1 vote in favour of infiltration.

I will proceed with orbital bombardment scenario. Pick level of destructiveness:
>Extreme: atomics, expect radiation fields and powerful sandstorms afterwards
>High: energy weapons, would create powerful sandstorms that would make it hard to use aircraft and communicate
Low: conventional payload, destruction destroys just surface structures without any significant after effects

>>32187624
Would you like to hail them? If yes, please get one more vote and roll d100 for Leadership to command them to stand down

>Roger, Lord Astartes. Full bombardment initiated. Target: All sites. Frigates "Zhikov" and "Fury of Spatian" will initiate bombardment at 0400 hours flagship time. Bombardment will last for 360 seconds, primary means - Mk. V "Peacemaker" Nuclear Warheads. Our troops will be on the ground by 0100 hours, we will keep them 150km away to minimise exposure to radiation. They will start moving towards the enemy sites immediatelly after bombardment, expected time of arrival 0630 hours.
Renard, leader of your Shadow Guard squints his eyes, then exclaims:
>Let's put them at 10 km distance from the bombardment, this will considerably shorten their response time and enemy will not have time to fortify his underground facilities.
Commander Thorn nods:
>Ave, your orders will be adhered to. Our troops should be at the target Alpha Primaris around 0425 then.

Barrage of nuclear warheads hits the planets surface like a swarm screaming daemons, 8 missiles with a total of 96 warheads saturate dozens of square miles, unleashing hell on earth. Destruction is total and complete - enemy surface cities are wiped out, their ruins turned to dust that now chaotically swirls in huge clouds of a radioactive sandstorm.
>>32188210
Your ground forces move forward immediately after the bombardment stops, soldiers emerge from their trenches, where they waited out the ignition of small suns no more than 10 kilometres away. Thracian 51st was not ready for this kind of war, but with grim determination and some encouragement from commissars they move quickly towards the enemy positions - thousands of men and machines are flowing like a river of steel into the radioactive wasteland. The hell you created didn't go anywhere, the conditions are atrocious - steaming-hot dust clouds, low visibility due to sandstorm, no air support, failure of electronics due to electromagnetic anomalies, there are numerous reports of radiation fatigue and vehicle failure, but your force is pushing on nonetheless.
>>32188212
However neither you, nor Inquisitors will need to suffer all of this - your troops will put teleportation beacons wherever you will want to appear, creating a link to use Inquisitor Endor's teleporter.
>>32188293
After you declare this, there is silence on the ship bridge, interrupted only by sounds of orbital bombardment. But once it ceases, communications crackle into life:
>Inquisitors, welcome... Thank you for your Names, it is pleasure to make acquaintance. It is a shame, that you, Chapter Master, do not want to share your name with me, I am disappointed, after hearing so much about you. But do not mistake my curiosity for sympathy - you do not hold influence here and no one but the Emperor himself could consign me to anything... I hope to see you soon.
[connection is abruptly cut]
>>
>>32188659
Who voted to ground the troops?
What happened to the Visions rolls?
Why is no one taking us by the shoulder or advising us on the situation for grounding hundreds of thousands of Imperial troops in the worst conditions possible?
Hell, why did we even bomb it with those munitions when NO ONE voted for it?
>>
>>32188659
Commander Thorn looks up from the communications cogitator:
>It is impossible... He has managed to send that transmission despite the electromagnetic charge in the atmosphere above his base! But at least we have his location, it seems he sent this from underneath Alpha Primaris. Voice recognition seems to indicate, that this is Quixos. We cornered him!
Titus Endor frowns:
>I don't think so, commander. I am beginning to think that it might be that it's him who drew us into a trap... We must be extremely careful!
Eisenhorn nods:
>Indeed. We are getting reports that our first troops have already reached entrance to the mines... They report some sort of pschic shield covering it, it seems that orbital bombardment didn't affect the main site at all! We will have visual confirmation only once the dust clouds part, but it could take days until that happens... I am proposing for us to participate in the taking of the enemy complex, I don't doubt the bravery of Commander Thorn's men, but we don't know what kind of monstrosities Quixos may unleash...

We didn't ask and we are technically the most senior combatant present I think.

At least two people called for extreme bombardment and two other people voted for something else but weren't in agreement so bombardment wins. At least one person went for atomics.

>Why is no one taking us by the shoulder or advising us on the situation for grounding hundreds of thousands of Imperial troops in the worst conditions possible?
Commander Thorn gave his advice, but Renard gave him a different order. Thorn is interested in preserving his men, while Renard cares only about YOUR safety, so both of them acted in their best intentions. As you didn't intervene, Renard outranked Thorn in this situation, so troops were placed mere 10km from the epicentre. Their long term health and survival prospects are miniscule, but they won't die just now, so they are able to use this surprise attack agains the enemy and establish the beachhead you need, with their radiation-rotting bodies, if need be. Men are expendable.

Death and destruction are things that follow you in your wake. Sometimes you need to get used to them, to survive, to endure. But there is a very fine line between controlling your emotions and being callous. One of things that Chapter Master understood, looking at the screen with numbers of mounting casualties of the Imperial Guardsmen dying on the planet's surface is that he no longer really cares. It is better they die here, this way, than from STDs or overdose back at their barracks. Life is suffering and that's what they were born for, it's what they live for.
