Welcome to Academy City. The time is morning, the weather is right, and the date is August 15.

You are Kyril Torikov, ‘Level 2’ Telekinetic Child Error and Asuka was staring at you. It would be a startling sight to wake up to but she had a disarming smile so you squashed the urge to recoil backwards and retreat.

“Good morning dear, breakfast is ready,” she greeted.

You were still clothed in what you were wearing yesterday for some reason. Vaguely, the memory of dinner with Asuka came up, after having dragged your friends back to the dorm after some kind of party. Thankfully Asuka had gotten out of your face and was humming a certain catchy tune as you scrambled out of bed.

“Do not get your hopes up dear,” she said as she sat down and had some tea, “Nothing special happened after dinner.”

Shrugging you went to take a shower as you contemplated your plan for today. First things first, you had to go to the hospital, and while the doc didn’t really set a time you might want to get it out of the way as soon as possible. Lord Kudou had booked your lunch hour and Asuka willing, you’d be able to get them to come to some sort of understanding. The final bullet point in your agenda today was to deliver your info to Sparky. It wasn’t much but it was something and if you wanted to know more you could ask Toulour for a favour.

“So dear, what shall we do first today?” Asuka asked as you sat down for breakfast.

>”I need to see Heaven Canceller.”
>”About lunch with your dad…”
>”We need give Sparky the news”
>”I’m just going to laze about the room and read today”

We don't really have anything worthwhile to tell sparky. The only thing we could tell her is Nunotaba's association with the project and that it's dealing with her clones.
When the opportunity comes up I suggest owing a favor to Toulour for more info.

You were going to the hospital first. The sooner you got out of this wheelchair, the better off you could be. There was no need to get lazy, wheeling yourself about with little effort. Asuka was thus informed and after a nice breakfast you headed out to Heaven Canceller’s hospital.

A brief check up later and the doc spoke to you,

“Your wounds are healing fine. There’ll be some scarring though. You don’t need a wheelchair any more but I don’t recommend anything more than light exercise for the next week or so.”

Finally, you thought as you jumped out of your wheelchair. The landing elicited a wince.

“See what I mean?” the doc smiled, “You might want to hold off on jogging for a day or two. Get used to walking first, that kind of thing. Exercise and painkillers don’t mix well either so don’t try it. Other than that you’re free to go, though if you want your own wheel chair then the lobby can handle it. I suppose I could prescribe some painkillers as well if you’ve run out though I doubt it.”

He handed you a slip of paper with his signature and illegible script.

“Thanks doc.”

“Try not to get in to too much trouble now,” were his parting words.

Walking wasn’t too tiring though you were definitely feeling a bit tender with each footfall.

“I hope you are not worrying about the scarring,” Asuka finally spoke, “I certainly do not mind it.”

There was still some time before lunch so you could probably get some other business out of the way.

While a wheelchair was tempting you could probably put that on hold for now. You did get another jar of painkillers though so there was that.

“So we have some time before lunch you,” you started.

“I am not averse to having lunch with my father if that is what you were wondering,” Asuka interrupted.

“Then it looks like we can finish some business for Sparky in the mean time,” you finished.

“Of course dear, the public phones are that way.”

It was nice now that you could just talk to Toulour over a payphone. Granted you were paying out of your pocket the longer it went on but you don’t think you were going to have a long conversation.

“So you wanted to know more about Radio Noise?” Toulour sounded the same as usually.

“Yeah, I’ll owe you one, right?”

“I guess I can give you some of the important points while we deliver the whole thing to your apartment sound good?”

You agreed.

“Well let’s see, Project Radio Noise was a plan to weaponise clones of the third ranked Level 5. Due to its budget and the fact that the clones were actually Level 3 the whole thing was shut down. I recall your friend Nunotaba was responsible for inventing the Testament machine that allowed them to rapidly transfer knowledge to the clones without going through the mandatory education thing.”

“Wait how’d they even managed to clone The Railgun?”

“Well she was a kid back then so they pretty much tricked her in to giving away her DNA map. Now they’re using the mass production plan from Project Radio Noise to supply clones for the Level 6 Shift project. It’s about using 20,000 clones to level up the first ranked Level 5 Accelerator. That’s about it.”

“Alright thanks Toulour, I’ll pay you back.”

“Oh don’t worry, you definitely will,” he assured you.

Your business for the Railgun done you now had to turn your attention to the lunch with Lord Kudou. To be fair you hadn’t set in stone where said lunch was going to be had. You had a bit of time so the thought of cooking for him sounded nice. Then you remembered the last time you tried to cook something for someone. Maybe lunch at a fancy restaurant would be better?

Screw it you needed the both of them to air their grievances. Thus the privacy of your room should be adequate. Then again that meant you had to cook. Well Asuka was there so what could possibly go wrong?

Turns out, very little, seeing as you were able to stand above the counter top now. You had decided on something simple, rice, stir fry, omelettes, a small bit of salad and the ever ubiquitous miso soup. It was a deceptively simple looking lunch but Asuka was witness to the amount of care and effort you put in to the preparation. Little things like a maintaining a consistent temperature, the whisking motions of the egg, or even the flick of your wrist in tossing the salad, helped. At least you think it did as Asuka contented herself with lending a small bit of help since you had things well in hand.

Asuka also gave you the necessary information to contact her father too so it wasn’t long before he showed up at the appointed time. Of course you were just making the finishing touches to the dishes so had him seat himself before returning to your work. As you were done you weren’t sure why he was frowning. Maybe he didn’t like that his daughter was so familiar with your kitchen and how she was complementing you as you the both of you worked?

“I would like to at least thank you for the food, if nothing else,” he said.

“How’s the food?” you tried to break the ice.

“It is adequate,” he replied.

“You don’t seem the type to get lovingly made meals.”

“Asuka’s mother, and my wife, is many things,” he shuddered, “But a cook is not one of them.”

You could imagine.

“In any case I am not insulting your cooking if that is what you are worried about,” he continued, “It is simply unusual for me to have such simple fare for lunch. It is a bit of a novelty really.”

That was good then.

“Enjoying Academy City so far then?”

“It may be ahead of the curve technologically but it is no different from any other major city, like London, or Prague,” he replied, “Though I’m sure there are worthier diversions.”

There lay the heart of the matter.

“Could you name some then?”

“Well I am partial to orchestral performances. Certainly much more civilised than the ‘fight club’ that the two of you frequent.”

“Kyril dear please tell my father that I have found something much more interesting to do with my free time,” Asuka finally spoke up.

Lord Kudou gave you a dark glare as he spoke,

“Yes, please do tell me.”

You didn’t quite have the guts to tell exactly what she was found interesting but you did assure him that you were not sleeping with her.

“Oh, but I seem to recall us sharing a bed these past two nights,” Asuka added.

While Asuka may have said that her father was a bit of a pacifist but the look he was giving you didn’t quite lend weight to that. You knew that you weren’t exactly unimportant but it was looking like they were just dancing around the issue they had between the two of them.

“I refuse to be a piece in your private cold war,” you simply said, “This isn’t about me. This is about the two of you.”

To be honest, it wasn’t a great way to divert attention away from you but if they were expecting for you to speak up after that then they had another thing coming. You tried your best to not wither under their combined gaze. It was amazing how similar they were when they were working together. After a few minutes they finally switched to staring at each other. These two, you sighed inwardly, they were really stubborn weren’t they.

“Alright,” you finally broke the silence, “Pops, what’s your deal? You clearly have a problem so out with it.”

He had the gall to look insulted before sighing and giving in.

“I have a problem with violence,” he stated clearly, “I find it unacceptable in this day and age.”

Before Asuka could enjoy his ‘defeat’ you asked her the same question,

“And you?. Is there a reason you refuse to speak to him?”

“Of course there is,” she didn’t elaborate further.

“She was simply throwing a tantrum,” Lord Kudou provided.

“And you were simply afraid, cowering in fear of my power.”

“I feared only what you would become,” he answered calmly, “I doubted that you ever thought deeply about what you were doing with it.”

“For that you sent me away.”

“Tell me what your conduct had awarded you then? Where are your friends, your allies?” his questions held a hint of accusation, “It was lonely wasn’t it?”

“You would not know and I-”

“I would know,” he answered, “I would know very well what happens when you trust in no one but your sword. I didn’t want you to suffer because of it.”

“Then maybe you should not have sent me away,” she added venomously.

“Don’t you see?” he asked, “I sent you away because I cared, because I dared to hope that there would be someone out there for you, since we obviously did not suffice.”

So if you were reading this right, Pops didn’t like her ways and tried to change them by sending her off to a boarding school, hoping that the wider world could help her with her trust issues. Because of Asuka’s character and upbringing, she totally misunderstood his intentions and it backfired rather spectacularly. That was why she didn’t trust, because she felt betrayed by her very own kin.

You refused to take sides. This was their issue and they were going to settle it like normal people. Lord Kudou had said that they were both stubborn and he was right. Their verbal exchange was heated but then they returned back to glaring each other.

“That is all I wanted to say,” Lord Kudou finally said and broke his gaze, “Thank you for the meal my boy.”

He left, trailing smoke from a fresh cigar as he went. You could say he was fuming. Asuka for her part was left trembling in her chair, though what she felt you weren’t sure. The silence was rather awkward so you started putting away the dishes, leaving her to her thoughts. Could you have handled the situation better, perhaps but you never did quite have much of a father figure so it wasn’t like you were the expert here. When you were done with the dishes, you returned to the table with a fresh pot of tea.

“Our troubles must seem so silly to you,” Asuka remarked.

“No it doesn’t,” you replied, “But that’s only because I never knew my father.”

“Then perhaps you can count yourself lucky,” she joked.

“I already do.”

“If this is some build up to some clichéd line then I must stop you there,” she silenced you with a finger.

Blast.

At least she was back to normal now. You think she just really needed to talk to him, which she was going to have to do eventually. They may still not see eye to eye though but there was nothing wrong with agreeing to disagree. At least you hoped there wasn’t.

Toulour worked quickly. The inside was packed full of papers related to Project Radio Noise and Level 6 Shift. There was plenty of information here, information that Sparky could go through in her own time. Grabbing the project proposal and test plan, you set out with Asuka to deliver your findings to Sparky. It was time you earned the favour of a Level 5.

You found her playing with some kinds at a playground. She must have been bored waiting for you or something.

“Oi Sparky,” you called her out.

Waving back she quickly ran up to talk to you.

“Good day Misaka,” Asuka greeted.

“Kudou where’ve you been?” she asked.

The both of you shared a glance.

“Nothing children should know about,” Asuka replied.

She noticed that your fingers were entwined and neither one of you were going to correct her delusions.

“B-b-b-buh,” she started sputtering, “You’ve been gone for two days without leave.”

“I suppose our dorm mother is now suitable irate.”

Wait, wasn’t Aneue their Dorm Supervisor?

“But enough about me, I heard that you owe my dear boyfriend a favour and I would like to know if you are prepared.”

The Railgun took a step back.

“He is a bit of a Yakuza in bed,” Asuka said.

“Please stop teasing the Railgun dear,” you chided good-naturedly, “I have the information if you want it.”

“You’re not going to ask me to do perverted stuff are you?” she was cautious.

“Of course not,” you assured.

With that she held out her hand and you gave her the information. Pocketing it with no small amount of thanks she went back to play with the kids. It seemed like you got a lot done today. Now what?

The two of you decided to leave Sparky to her fun though not without a cradle-snatching joke before you left. If it weren’t for the fact that you were heading towards the Tokiwadai dormitories then you would probably just be enjoying the walk right about now. Asuka wasn’t exactly hanging off your arm but you were holding hands so it would have looked like you were a couple. As it was now, you were looking liking a condemned man being led on by a cute grim reaper.

The reason you were heading there now was because you were going to have to face Aneue eventually. It was better to face the fire now before it grew out of control. Thus, you were trudging towards your ultimate destination, all the while dreading your eventual conversation with her. What were you going to tell Aneue anyway? That you just got out of the wheelchair? That you did not have sexual relations with Asuka? Fat chance, you thought, it would probably work just as well as breaking your own legs and claiming that you broke them by pushing kids out of the path of a runaway truck full of puppies. That is, it would not work at all.

“How many days were you gone again?” you asked Asuka.

“Three days and two nights by my count,” she replied, “Not consecutively though so I would imagine the punishment will be relatively similar in magnitude to the previous one.”

“I hope you have an excuse ready.”

Asuka laughed.

“I do not have an excuse dear. I will simply tell her I spent the night in your company, as I had told her previously.”

An arm snaked around your neck.

“I believe we have many things to discuss younger brother of mine.”

It seemed like you had arrived and Aneue had your neck in her iron grip.

“I just got out of a wheelchair Aneue please don’t put me back in one,” you tried.

“Don’t worry. Where you’re going you won’t need wheelchairs,” she whispered.

Her grip tightened.

“Do I at least get one last supper?”

“Was I not enough to satiate you?” Asuka supplied unhelpfully.

Breathing started to become increasingly difficult.

“Always remember this moment my dear. The moment I looked death in the face,” you gasped, “for your company at night.”

Your sight was dimming and though you really wanted to suffer in silent dignity your body’s reflexes demanded you do something about this situation. Your panicked thrashing and desperate efforts could only be quantified as ‘terrified Kyril noises’ before consciousness finally slipped away.

When you felt yourself aware once more you were in a chair. Sitting in her office was Aneue, and to your left was Asuka. They were discussing something but shifted their attention to you when you woke up. A glass of whiskey was on the table.

“And so sleeping beauty awakes,” Asuka narrated.

Aneue snorted before speaking,

“I understand that you were aiding Kudou through a family dispute but that doesn’t change that you could have very well taken advantage of her situation.”

“Oh he was the perfect gentleman,” Asuka giggled.

“Of that I have no doubt otherwise I would have had to correct his,” she paused to sip at her whiskey, “irresponsibility.”

You were pretty sure that wasn’t going to be pleasant. Come to think of it, why were you still alive?

“In any case I still need to punish the both of you,” Aneue continued.

“Of course.”

“You are dismissed Kudou, I shall deal with my younger brother myself.”

Asuka left the room and Aneue loomed over you from her side of the desk.

“Count yourself lucky that there were no youthful indiscretions,” she started, “I will have you work it all off. You will report back to me tomorrow for it.”

There was unspoken threat there as well and you gulped.

Tokiwadai Middle School is an all-girls school, one of the most prestigious educational institutions within Academy City, and home of two of the seven Level 5 Ability Users. It is a school only for elites. Prerequisites for entry included being a Level 3 Ability User amongst other strict requirements. This has been a source of much controversy, once turning down the application of a princess because she could not meet said requirement. Of course, once one was admitted there were a battery of rules and regulations to follow, especially within the female exclusive School Garden.

It is what made Tokiwadai so boring you thought. As a swordswoman, a student and a person, you, Kudou Asuka, thought that it was boring. If this was your father’s attempt at killing you with boredom then it was most certainly working. While you were a Level 4 yourself, it didn’t mean you were leader of a clique or part of a group of likeminded ladies. Unlike them, you were a bit different. This led to the creation of certain figurative wall between you and your fellow school mates. As a result you were unapproachable though it was mostly because of,

The Queen, the fifth rank Number 5, was probably why you hated Tokiwadai more than was strictly necessary. Her ability, Mental Out, was based on manipulation of people’s mind. It was something you had learned to guard against. She was a Level 5 however and it was a testament to her skill that she could still read your mind if she put some effort in to it. The most important part was that she couldn’t control you, not any more. Unfortunately for you, since she discerned the nature of your power from reading your mind you couldn’t pay her back for some of the indignities she had you suffered. Unfortunately for her, she was also well aware that nowhere was safe if you put your mind to it. Her usual method of hiding behind warm bodies would only delay you briefly.

That was why she manipulated the truth. The highly impressionable Ladies of Tokiwadai were susceptible to gossip and it was easy for The Queen and her clique to spread lies and misinformation. It did not help that you were alone and had to counter the rumours yourself, mostly with the help of The Dean. Nowadays, the both of you had come to an unspoken agreement. She didn’t meddle in your affairs and you didn’t carve the fat off of her body with The Dean.

Speaking of The Dean, it was often a very convenient conversation starter. You remembered the kind of conversations you had with,

You recall the conversations you’ve had with The Railgun. Granted many of those earlier conversations involved cutting remarks and pointed arguments. It was also the reason why Tokiwadai had banned sword fighting within the school grounds outside of the designated areas. It was funny to you, to see her struggling to even pull The Dean away from you. A Level 5 she may have been but not even her Electromaster powers could not separate you from your sword as long as you held it. Even then you were no less dangerous without it.

For the most part your relationship with The Railgun was cordial, if a bit distant. The junior obviously had her own troubles to deal with, especially when Shirai had transferred in and taken a liking to her “onee-sama”. Your mind truly boggled at how one could be so infatuated with The Railgun, especially after having known of her childishness. Perhaps it was her well-meaning but often misguided heart? You wouldn’t know after all and you didn’t care. It was not like you wanted followers and sycophants yourself. Cliques were a natural expression of human behaviour. Like-minded individuals grouped up for protection but in Tokiwadai you had yet to meet someone of like mind. Thus,

You took a page from Machiavelli. There was no way for you to be loved, not with the Queen’s machinations, your own manner and The Dean on your back. Thus you did not discourage the rumour that you were the second coming of Elizabeth Bathory. No one in their right mind should ever think of crossing you. After all you could not be controlled by The Queen and you did not fear The Railgun. You may not be their equal but you were definitely one of the most fearsome within the minds of the Ladies of Tokiwadai. Your name was spoken in whispers and often they would give you wide berth as you stalked the halls even with the knowledge that The Dean’s reach ensured nowhere within the width of the hallway was actually safe. The Dictator, they called you. It wasn’t a bad name you thought though if you actually cared, you might have pitied those who lived in a Tokiwadai’s world.

Interlude end. I’ll try for Wednesday.
