Skyler is riding in the front, leaving you and Wendy on the bench in the back of the SUV. Wendy is watching the world go by her through the inch of glass between her and it.

The air conditioning is on.

Your hands are in your lap as you awkwardly look from one thing to the next.

There is plenty of time to think on your sins.

>Do you break the silence, Michelle?
>>
You are Michelle St. Claire, and today is your third day on the job.

Your service sidearm is missing two rounds from its loaded magazine. The lead is embedded in the brains of what were two young girls.

They tried to run away. You didn’t let them.

Are you happy now, Michelle?

Yeah. This feels good. You can talk now.

“So, uh…”

Wendy groans. Skyler does not react.

“Whatever, fuck you too. How do I not-be like Sergeant Rogers?”

>Last big post delay/interrupt I swear. Food is on my plate/in my stomach.

“I like the money. I like most of you.”

You look over at Wendy with the sharpest, most pointed glance you can manage and continue, “That’s about it.”

Skyler says, “So, means to an end?”

You shrug. You’re not really sure that that means.

He interprets it as a sign of agreement and continues, “Then you’re not going to be like Rogers. He’s not in it for the money. Make sen-”

Wendy cuts him off, “Stop being so fucking nice about it. She’s a fucking retard, get to the point. Rogers likes to kill people. That’s why he smiles, that’s why he’s here, that’s what gets him hard. Fucking get i-”

“Wendy, calm down. She’s brain damaged. It’s going to take her some time. Just be patient with her.”

Wendy stops talking, but she fixes her gaze out the window.

“I’m right here…”

Skyler looks sympathetic. He doesn’t speak further, and turns back around facing forward.

The ride back is uncomfortable. The period where you strip off your smoke dusted clothing is uncomfortable, and you’re even more uncomfortable when you realize that the fastest, easiest way home is by asking one of them to drive you there.

Maybe you should take the bus.

But you have the rest of today off...maybe you should do something.

“Just...something cheap, and small but not too small. So I can put things inside of it. I have like two or three thousand in cash.”

Wendy looks at Skyler, who’s watching both of you, and spreads her arms in protest.

“She was shot in the face. Compassion, Wendy.”

“Oh my god, you too? Shut up with your bullshit Buddhist shit. I get it already, you were in Cambodia and Laos and the asshole of the world. Stop preaching.”

“What the fuck, Skyler! Not in front of her!”

He shrugs, “She already knows. We had a nice talk at lunch.”

Oh no. Oh no oh no oh no. Your only friend is about to shoot your other only friend.

You are not well equipped for this.

Your head hurts. You walk towards Wendy, determined, and wrap her up in a big hug, making sure your prosthetic applies only just enough pressure to keep her still.

You rub your real hand up and down her back, like you saw in the flats on deployment.

She is very tense. As you keep holding her you feel tears running down your neck and Wendy’s hands on your back.

Whew. She probably won’t start shooting now.

Your head hurts.

Skyler leaves, quickly, leaving the two of you alone

It feels like you’ve been standing for a long time. You let go of Wendy. She lets go of you.

She rubs her eyes with the palms of her hands, “I need to wash my face.”

“We’re all g-”

“Don’t fucking even, Michelle.”

You purse your lips together and sit down as Wendy walks, shoulders slumped, to the bathroom.

You count the tiles on the ceiling and make it to 238, although you lost focus once or twice. Your head hurts.

When Wendy walks out you see the full extent of...whatever they are, on her face.

You see why she covers up. Her eyes are red.

She sits next to you. She smells like sweat.

“About what Skyler told you, I can explain.”

“So not in the mood to give a shit about it today. Besides...it’s not that weird. You’ll see what I mean if you live long enough.”

She walks and talks, leaving you to quickly grab your belongings and follow after her.

Her stride seems to have quickened. She’s moving faster than usual.

“Can you even fucking drive?”

You nod. Not well, but you do.

“Really?”

She looks at you, her expression a combination of hostility and scepticism. “Whatever. Today is one of those days where I don’t give a shit.

“I guess not...I mean, you know, I haven’t been down to the beach yet and you didn’t go down there last time so I was kind of thinking that maybe you’d want to stay a while since the sun is still out and there’s still a bottle or two of the wine from last time.”

You shrug loosely.

Wendy glances at you. She looks like she doesn’t believe you. “Really?”

“If you want or whatever…”

Oh. This is unexpected. Now it’s Wendy hugging you in a hallway under a fluorescent light that’s about to fail. The flickering is making your headache worse.

She mumbles thank you into your ear. She lets go after an uncomfortably long few seconds.

“So, you know, maybe you could be a little bit less...you know...confrontational?”

She doesn’t say anything. You’ll take what you can get.

Wendy leads you to where her car is parked today and dumps her bag into the back seat as she climbs into the driver’s seat. You follow her example on the opposite side. She turns over the engine and lets the car idle in the lot as she engages the stereo system to more music you don’t recognize as she pulls out her phone and starts tapping on it.

She spends about a minute at it before she puts the car into gear and pulls out.

“Do you know anything about cars or how to buy them?”

You shake your head.

“Thought so.”

She keeps both hands on the wheel but it’s obvious she wants to rub her face with them.

You look over to your left and smile weakly at Wendy, “Nothing bright pink, okay?”

She returns a smile, faintly, and turns her head back to watch the road.

You recognize the direction you’re heading, faintly, as towards the area Wendy lives outside of the most urban downtown areas. Office parks and high rises are swapped for strip malls and housing tracts as you cut through a heavily suburban area about twenty minutes outside of Echo’s innermost areas.

The two of you drive quietly along a four lane road in a section of the area that seems to be mostly commercial and business. A few blocks ahead is a tall sign advertising for a car lot.

Sure enough, Wendy pulls over into the right lane and turns on her signal as she pulls right and turns into the lot. She keeps right and cranks the wheel to turn into a parking spot marked by faded white paint on broken black asphalt, and turns off the car.

Wendy unbuckles her seatbelt and pushes her door open with her shoulder and steps out, and waits for you.

“I took a lot at their inventory and I found three in your budget. There’s a Chrysler-Nissan Optima and a Mercury Comet which are basically just the most average sedans ever, and there’s another Chrysler-Nissan called the Jackrabbit which is smaller than the other two.

“The Comet looks fine. ...it’s really only a few thousand?”

“There could be some stains or smells.”

Your lip curls up and you feel air touch your teeth. You thought you were done with that.

Wendy notices your expression, “I don’t know why you don’t wait until tomorrow and buy something that isn’t ass, but whatever. Give me your card, I’ll deal with this. Just go...stand over there, or something.”

You reach into a pocket of your pants and struggle with the fabric until, finally, you pull it free. You hand over the small, perforated plasti-metal card to Wendy and she walks off.

You stand, awkwardly, examining your nails.

They look much better than they did a few days ago, although they’ve lost some of their original luster to the thick gloves and use from earlier today.

You scrape some dirt, skin, and oil out from under them as Wendy does Wendy things with a man wearing a wrinkled looking suit. He must be a salesman. She points out the Comet and the man’s face and reaction suggests he’s expecting a fight, but instead Wendy just hands him your card.

Shit.

She gives you a thumbs up.

Goddamnit.

Wendy takes your card and a pair of keys from the man, and walks back to you.

“You need to pay for insurance. Corp and Echo law. You don’t wanna get fucked by those lawyers.”

She hands you back your card, and offers you the keyfob. “Don’t fucking lose it. So...I’ll follow you to your house?”

”That sounds fine.”

You walk towards your...Comet? You don’t see the resemblance, really. The styling confuses you, but at least the glossy black paint seems to be mint...mostly.

You cross your fingers and push the keyfob, starting the car and unlocking the doors.

The engine cranks for half a second before finally turning over and coughing to life. At least it started on the first try…

You pull open the door and take a look. The seats are dry, cracked grey leather, but they seem to be fine.

It smells like smoke inside. You take a seat and wait several seconds as the electric driver’s chair moves to place you in the optimum driving position.

There’s a lot of travel. Once the car is satisfied, the mirrors swivel to align themselves in your sight lines. You pull out your phone and enter the address to your new house, although you have to copy paste it in from another document.

Eventually the GPS system calculates a route for you and, slowly, you pull out of the lot. Wendy follows you.

It feels strange driving again. You haven’t in a while, and never in a situation where death wasn’t a possibility.

Your knuckles are a pallid white when you finally get to your house nearly a hour later. You step out, shakily, exhausted into the unfurnished garage. You knew there weren’t any IEDs, but they still felt real to you.

You have Karan open the door for Wendy and you collapse into a couch.

“Jesus, you look like shit. First time in a while?”

You nod.

“Sheeeiit.”

She helps herself to your (her) wine and a pair of glasses, and fills them to the brim. She goes at it like it’s water as you hold yours, watching.

>It’s been a long day, Michelle, but now you’re home. What do you want to do?

You drink enough of the wine to be able to walk with it, and then stand up.

Wendy looks over at you and then grabs her bag, “I’m going to go change. You said there’s a bathroom right down here, right?”

You point in the direction you think it is, “I think it’s right over there.”

Wendy looks at you for a moment, “...are you not?”

You shrug, limply, replying, “What I’m wearing is what I have…”

Wendy looks at you, scared, distraught, and disgusted. She looks like she, desperately, wants to say something...but doesn’t.

The effort seems to be blanching her lips. She smiles awkwardly as she forces her gaze off of you. She turns around stiffly and walks down a hallway and makes a right to where one of the bathrooms of the house are and spends a few minutes in there.

She comes back out, wearing a white blouse and a patterned skirt. She’s barefoot.

You look at her from the island in the kitchen, “You just had that with you?”

“I keep a few different outfits in my locker, so what? When you said beach I thought it’d be nice.

You shrug. Seems...reasonable, for Wendy.

Wendy grabs her glass of wine and the pair of wine bottles in a hand and under her arm as she follows you out to the balcony, where the two of you take a short, comfortable elevator ride down to the beach front.

Oh. This is nice. There’s another, wooden patio area. It’s unfurnished, but the deck seems well built and the wood is a rich, dark color. It shines, faintly, in the sunlight.

It must be coated or sealed.

Wendy looks around, “There isn’t any furniture?”

You shrug, and she sighs. “Whatever. Those are privacy shades, right?”

You nod.

“Have them engaged. But don’t black them out or anything weird, just loop an empty shore or something.”

>[1/2]
>>
>>32210662
You...um, hmm. You try shouting at the house for Karan. Nothing seems to change, although the shoreline as far as you can tell was already empty when you got down.

Wendy steps off the platform and walks towards the line separating the softpack and hardpack sand and sits down, digging the wine into the hardpack so it stands upright.

You pull off your boots and socks and step off the patio and into the sand, and wiggle your toes around.

It’s different from the sand in the middle east.

You walk towards Wendy and sit down next to her. The two of you sit quietly, sipping at your wine, refilling your glasses as you need.

Eventually you find (drink) the courage you need to ask something you’ve been wondering, “So, you know...what’s the deal with your face?”

Wendy glances to her right, towards you, and says, “They’re a narco tribal thing. And it’s not just a tattoo. The cartels can afford whatever they want, and for some reason that’s one of the machines they bought. They selectively and permanently altered the pigment of my skin. There’s nothing to do about it except conceal it with some foundation and concealer.”

Oh. Well...that’s some shit.

Seems kind of like I've lost interest or everyone is busy in other quests or elsewhere.

I'll give it another 20 minutes to see if something happens, otherwise I'll just go.

We'll FINALLY be getting to where I wanted to end the thread in the first place Friday night soon.

>>
>>32210721

You decide to vocalize what you were already thinking and say, “That’s some shit.’

Wendy takes a drink of wine and swallows and replies, “Yep.”

“Did it...hurt?”

Wendy shrugs, “Maybe?”

She sniffles and rubs her nose.

Oh, right. The cocaine thing.

Awkward.

Wendy stands up and brushes most of the sand off of her and her skirt.

You look to your left over your wine and glass and say, “What’s up?”

Wendy replies, “I feel like standing. Also I want to take a look around the patio. It seems nice. When are you going to furnish it?”

You shrug at her, then rotate back forward to watch the water coming in and out.

Once you turn your head, you lose track of Wendy. She is a leaf on the wind.

After a minute or two she calls out to you, “Hey Michelle, did you know there’s an outdoor shower over here?”

You reply, “An outdoor what?”

“I said outdoor shower, retard. Just come over and look.”

You push yourself up with your prosthetic arm, hardly needing to use your legs at all, and get to your feet, and turn around so you’re facing the house.

You don’t see her.

“Wendy? Where are you?”

“South side, south wall. There’s an entire space over here.”

You follow her voice, not really being able to figure out which way is south that quickly, and end up walking into a wide corridor between the edge of your property and the fence, and the wall of the house on the opposite side.

>[1/2]
>>
>>32213071

Wendy is standing a handful of yards away from you, examining...something. Between you and her is a walkway made of mood that matches the lower patio, raised above the sand of the beach. You walk along until you get next to her, and see what she’s seeing clearly for the first time.

She’s looking at...something, made of what looks like black marble (doesn’t that match the bathtub upstairs?), sunk into the ground. A delicate arc of dark metal extends from the ground to hang a few feet over the pit, while there are matching metal knobs and spigots.

“Do you even know what you’re looking at?”

You shrug.

“Oh my Christ. How did you even find this place? I said outdoor shower but I guess it’s basically just an entire outdoor bath. Look behind you. You can be sitting in it and perfectly see the water. Maybe I should just fucking move in.”

Well...that’s a surprise. “Would you, you know...want to?”

“Would you let me?”

>That’s a good question, Michelle. Would you?

the warheads on a minuteman and trident ICBMs don't emit any radiation at all actually... its only once they undergo the reaction do they irradiate particulate matter in the atmosphere so lol at SCIENCE! and their attempt to bait them out and all that nonsense.

and honestly, they should have just had anything airborne stay 1km back, and hit the things with an RNEP or two, that would have solved things instantly

You shrug, “There’s space if you want it.”

Wendy is the one surprised now, “Really?”

Her expression hardens as she says, “And I’d be able to move in everything?”

You’ve seen and done worse, you guess...even if it was never quite parallel to holding a domestic.

On the other hand, Wendy had a good point. Fuck laundry.

“Everything.”

Wendy runs a hand through her hair, pulling it back over her scalp and ears before rubbing the tips of her index, middle, and thumb fingers together.

“That is just so gross.

Do I get to use the master bathroom?”

“Ew. Even I know that’s beyond the boundary of personal space. Besides, it’s connected to my bedroom…”

Wendy looks disappointed, “I’ll think about it. Can I at least remodel one of the bedrooms and bathrooms?”

You look down and away. How the fuck should you know? You shrug.

“Whatever. Promise to find out for me?”

“Allright…”

You walk back out towards the patio and stand on it, facing the house.

“Karan”

“Karan!”

“KARAN!”

No response. It’s a good thing you found out she can’t hear you down here sooner than later.

“I need to get back upstairs, I’ll be right back.”

Wendy looks at you with her “whatever,” face and pulls and smoothes her skirt down as she steps into the tub and sits down.

She doesn’t even live here yet.

Skank.

You take the elevator back upstairs and pull open the sliding glass door into the kitchen.

“Karan.”

Her avatar floats into existence along the glass wall, “Hello, Michelle. I see that your heartbeat is elevated and you’re slightly flushed.”

“That’s...not...whatever. Can you not hear me when I’m the beach down below?”

“No. The owner preferred that that area be considered “private.” Do you wish to access me and my functionality from down below?”

>[1/?]
>>
>>32216417

You nod. “I will send you a detailed list of what will need to be done. What is it you wanted, Michelle?”

“I invited Wendy to move in, but she wants to know if the lease allows remodels.”

Karan seems..agitated. The border of her avatar seems to disjoin in spikes and whorls.

“I do not see anything in the lease that would allow Wendy that privilege. In addition, Michelle, the lease does not have any language that would allow you to further sublet the unit.”

Shit.

You don’t know what those words mean. “Small words, Karan.”

“The lease does not allow you to take roommates.”

Oh.

SHIT.

“I see your blood pressure rising, Michelle. Shall I call the representative from Saedar-Krupp?”

“Yes, I think that would be good.”

“And what should I tell her, Michelle?”

You rub your forehead. You are not well equipped for this.

Your head hurts.

“Tell her I want to add a roommate. And if we can remodel or change the house.”

“Very well, Michelle. I am doing so now.”

You stand, waiting and awkwardly, leaning on the island for support for several minutes after Karan’s image vanished off the glass.

You wonder what...what was her name again? It’s on the tip of your tongue.

Karan comes back, “I have news, Michelle.”

“And?”

“The agency will allow Wendy to co-sign the lease, but they have denied any substantial or material alterations to the property, with one exception.”

Well...that’s...something? You think?

“What’s that?”

“The agency indicated that the owner is willing to sell. I suppose that was not mentioned in your earlier meetings.”

“No, it wasn’t.”

“I see. The asking price is at four point five million dollars.”

That’s a lot of money.

“Are you well, Michelle? I see your blood pressure is dropping quite rapidly. These swings are not healthy.”

“I get it. I’m heading back downstairs now.”

“Can you please engage the privacy shades? Wendy said to loop some footage of the empty beach.”

“Of course, Michelle. Stay safe. I would be upset if something else were to kill you.”

Ugh…

You descend, again, and sit down next to Wendy who’s on the edge of the deck of the patio. Maybe she doesn’t want to get too sandy.

“Karan checked the lease. We both need to sign a new version of it, but they won’t allow any remodels or whatever.”

“Really? That’s fucking bullshit.”

“But…”

“But…?”

“They told Karan that they’d be willing to sell.”

“No shit?”

“Four and a half million.”

“Christ…”

Wendy rubs her face, “That’s certainly something. Are you actually thinking about trying to get a mortgage and buying it out?”

>That would be crazy, Michelle. But perhaps that no longer bothers you?
>>
>>32216449
>I would be upset if something else were to kill you

“...Kind of, yeah. You said you wanted to live here, right?”

“Yeah, but I’m pretty sure not for more than two million bucks…”

You try your best to make begging eyes at Wendy.

“Look, fuck, I already said I’d move in. Jesus, just give me some time to think before I want to get weird gay married to the crazy cat lady and buy a house, okay?”

You don’t know what, like, half of that means.

“Just think about it.”

“Fuck off.”

Now’s probably a good time to stop talking. You kick your feet in the sand as you and Wendy sit on the edge of the patio, looking out towards Lake Erie, the sun up in pale, cloudless sky.

You feel...happy?

You're a sick motherfucker asking when the next thread is after 4 days straight.

Pretty sure I covered my thread quota for the week of the 19th to the 25th. Thread potentially Thursday night (very unlikely) or next Monday/Tuesday/Wednesday (more likely).

I think I start school a week from today, with classes M-Th, so it's possible that Wetwork Idols might become a regularly recurring Friday thread. Depends on my course load and homework and timing and whatever that I won't find out until I'm in the middle of it, but I'll stay on top of it and communicate effectively so everyone knows what's going on.

>>
>>32217677
It's mostly her being exhausted with/from/because Michelle.

There's only so much patience for braindead teenagers.
>>
>>32217706
true, though wine and quiet beach views followed by SHOPPING can help with that
>>
>>32217706
But Michelle is the loveable kind of braindead!
>>
>>32217725
Which is basically why Wendy isn't basically all cunt all the time.

Michelle doesn't really have the self-awareness, but Anon mitigates Wendy's unpleasantness well enough.

A lot of the cageyness was about Skyler breaking her trust about her domestic, but now that that's in the air and Michelle is accidentally(?) just rolling with it that's relieved a lot of tension.
