Your name is Michael Dunkin, and you now work for the Inquisition. Previously you were a sergeant in the 291st Cadian Shock Troopers, but now you find yourself in the company of Inquisitor Christina Massey of the Ordos Xenos. After saving her life at the cost of your men and your life (the old one, at least), you've been officially proclaimed a dead hero and recruited into her retinue. Now, with your new life and future in her hands, you're tasked with looking after Christina's well being. And whatever else that entails.

Though initially wary of allowing your new servant, Jeeves, outside of your room you managed to plead his case to Christina and gain him a bit more freedom. After that you retrieve your upgraded weapon and mingle with the crew for a bit, which leads you into your current predicament.

"Hey! Mikkey!"

You look up to find Melodi on a catwalk quite a ways above you, and it's more her voice and frantic waving that gives her away than her features.

"Hey yourself!" You call back, briefly returning the wave.

"Be down in a sec!"

You're not really sure how she plans on doing that.

And then she vaults over the side and into thin air.

Before you can say anything she's already speeding towards you at an alarming rate, red and white robes flapping about as she descends. You gape, but the Tech Priests around you seem no more worried than they ever are about anything.

Though this isn't exactly what you were expecting, you've learned enough in your short time here to be prepared for surprises. Sure enough, Melodi's fall begins to rapidly slow until she comes to an eventual stop, suspended a few feet in the air for a few moments. Seeing your expression, or lack of one, she frowns.

"Dang," She says. "That usually freaks most people out the first time."

"Sorry," You tell her. "Want to try again?"

"Nah. Thanks for the offer, though."

With that the gravchute she's got hidden somewhere dies and her boots hit the floor with a loud thud. A handful of curious eyes turn to investigate the noise, but quickly go back about their day.

"We don't get a lot of visitors down here, what with the 'You must be THIS augmented to enter' sign, but I suppose I can let you by. Just this once," She says. "So, what's up?"

While you're admittedly impressed by her skill, you manage to keep a straight face. You take a moment to look around you, inspecting the various before returning your gaze to her.

"Got any cybernetic animals I can borrow?" You ask.

"Huh?" Melodi cocks her head to the side, brow furrowing. "Like... servitors, or... you're messing with me, aren't you?"

"Maybe. Maybe not," You offer the Tech Priest a shrug. "Nah, I'm just getting some practice in with this new hellgun. It's nice to be able to shoot at something that isn't trying to chew my face off every once in a while."

Though you meant the last sentence to be well-meaning, Melodi looks just a little unsettled by it. Shaking her head, however, she's quick to recover and turn her attention to the weapon in question, currently hanging from the thing's strap resting against your shoulder.

"So he got everything put back together?" She asks, nodding in approval.

"He did, indeed," You answer. "Kicks like an angry grox, but I'll get used to it. It's too fun not to."

"Boys and their toys," Melodi rolls her eyes. "I think and Vincent'll get along just fine. But I'm sure you didn't just come down here to chat. What do you need?"

"Just thought I'd stop by and say hi, actually," You mimic her previous move and tilt your head. "Something wrong with that?"

"Of course not! It's just..." Melodi begins wringing her hands. "Whenever someone needs something or someone tweaked, fixed, or upgraded they usually come to me and I see what I can do. Nothing wrong with that, mind you; it's my job. I guess I've just got used to helping people, and wanting to help."

While an admirable habit, the fact that she greeted you expecting to be asked to do something doesn't sit very well with you. Still, if she isn't complaining, and it keeps things afloat, you decide it may be for the best.

"Well, now that you mention it," You begin. "You said something about looking at my hellgun for me?"

The Tech Priest brightens at that, already eagerly awaiting what you have planned.

"Sure!" She nods. "I haven't been allowed to touch one of those in a while. What would you like me to take a look at?"

we will have grenades on us so a launcher is a bit over kill so no
fire rate its a hell gun so don't think that will be useful
harder punch nothing wrong with that

Other reduceing recoil would be helpful as well
so ether shotgun punch or recoil

You've seen plenty of Orks with weapons smashed together to form one, but you've also seen a few Guard units using multipurpose weapons. Seeing as your pay-grade has gone up substantially, you decide to try it out yourself.

"How does a grenade launcher sound?" You ask, and a familiar unease settles in when you see the sudden glint in her eye.

"Explosives?" She grins. "You just made a girl's day, Mikkey! I'll get started on it right away; gotta have her ready for tomorrow."

Handing the weapon over, you can already hear the gears turning in the Tech Priest's head as she lovingly looks the weapon over. Watching this, a question strikes you.

"So what did it for you?" You ask, getting an odd look in return. "Getting interested in technology, I mean."

"Oh," She says, sounding only a little surprised at the personal question. "It's kinda boring, actually; just the classic story of wrench meets girl, girl meets wrench. By my eighteenth birthday I was an adept, and by the time I was twenty one I'd officially joined the club."

Carefully holding the rifle in one hand, she pulls down the collar of her robe and cranes her neck, revealing most of the flesh to be replaced by multi-colored wires.

"Too bad for my teachers, I was as much a fan of the flesh as I was of metal. Eventually they'd had enough of me trying to go Medicae and Mechanicus at the same time and put me up for review. Of course, then comes Chrissy to the rescue. Ready to sweep me away to a life of adventure and danger," Melodi chuckles, sounding wistful as she runs a hand over the hellgun.

Seeing as you're not leaving for the moment, Melodi starts off out of the way of the other Tech Priests and you dutifully follow behind. A handful of Melodi's companions give you an odd glance or two, but it seems they're more curious than anything.

"'Chrissy', huh?" You smirk as she colors ever so slightly, shuffling the weapon in her hands as she walks.

"What?" She asks, flustered. "Do you have a problem with that nickname or something?"

"Not at all," You say, chuckling, and only making her discomfort worse.

She leads you over to a small, private corner Melodi seems to have taken as her own. Various bits and pieces lay scattered but oddly organized in stacks and piles. You notice a well-worn cot sitting behind a container, just out of plain view. Melodi places your firearm on a nearby workbench, mechadendrite pulling a seat under her as she sits and begins tinkering.

Not wanting to pry too much, you decide to concentrate on the Tech Priest as you watch her work from your place nearby, helping hold up the wall.

"You sound like you enjoy your work," You note.

"Why wouldn't I?" Melodi asks. "I get to see new places, meet new people, and get to save the Imperium every other day. But... it's also more than that. Not just for me, either. Joining the Inquisition, joining Chrissy, has given a lot of us a fresh start with living. Whatever we did, whatever problems there were, they all vanished once we set foot on the Antebellum."

Though still trying to seem cheerful and lighthearted, it doesn't take an Arbite to know she means every word she says. For a moment her hands falter with your weapon, and she looks over at you.

"What do you think?" She asks.

>>
>>32166964

The urge for a Lho Stick grows dramatically as you ponder her words and question. Melodi patiently awaits your answer, and when you feel you've finally reached one you answer honestly.

"I don't know what to think yet," You say with a shrug. "Still deciding, myself."

"Yeah. That's understanda-" Melodi begins.

"I wasn't finished," You inform her lightly, and with an embarrassed laugh she nods for you to continue.

"A clean slate -does- make this job easier, without a doubt. I'll never have to worry about my brother or friends wondering about me. They know I'm dead. Technically."

The Tech Priest gives a smile at that, but it slowly vanishes as you lean down and give your new leg a few knocks.

"But even still, you can't just drop the past," You explain. "Trying to forget something ever happening isn't how you deal with a problem, it only makes it worse. I can't forget losing a leg to save a friend, but I don't want to either. It reminds me that I'm willing to do whatever it takes to save a friend, and I know I'll do it again. This new one is great, don't get me wrong, but I can't ignore it anymore than the rest of me."

You note that this is far from what Melodi was hoping to hear, judging by her reaction, but she nods all the same. She returns to her work and sighs, a wane smile on her face.

"Hey Mikkey," She says. "Can you do me a favor?"

"Sure."

"Stick to shooting things."

Your only response is to laugh, and after a moment Melodi joins you.

Recovering your composure, you push off of the wall and look for a clock, but find none.

"That's a real shame," You tell her. "I was hoping to go for the 'quiet but intelligent' type. Maybe write a self-help book while I'm here."

"Good luck with that, Mikkey boy," Melodi shakes her head, waving you goodbye with her mechadendrite.

You're almost away when something strikes you and you pause.

"Hey Melodi. Know where I could get a pack of smokes?" You ask.

"Office Quarters," She answers almost immediately, not bothering to turn around. "Talk to the barman and tell him your brand. He'll look after you."

"Much appreciated."

"It's why I'm here."

With that you part ways, Melodi's mechadendrite waving goodbye as you go on to search out your new objective. By the end of the day you've grabbed a pack of your favorite flavored Lho Sticks, turning in after a small dinner and a shower. Sleep comes with some effort, but you strike it up to pre-mission jitters. It's not the first time you've done this song and dance, but it'll be the first time while working for the Inquisition. No pressure.

The next morning you wake up early, getting a satisfying meal in you before heading down to check on Melodi. Though you have a sneaking suspicion that she was at it all night, she passes the whole thing off as a breeze. Now armed and armored, you're feeling old habits kick in as your helmet locks into place and you await the call.

A little before noon you and the rest of the team are called to the bridge, which by now is alive with activity as the crew prepares to exit the warp. You've had a few experiences in-transit before, but luckily nothing too scarring. Even so, you don't feel exceedingly lucky today.

"Warlock is awaiting launch, with Jaraax standing by right behind them," Vincent reports the names of the battalions being used for the operation. "Ready as we can be, ma'am."

A familiar anxiousness settles over you, but it's a welcome feeling. One you're used to.

"Aliens? Nah," You answer. "Working with the Inquisition? Utterly terrified."

"Good answer," She chuckles darkly, doing wonders for your morale.

As the minutes tick down you do a last minute equipment check, ensuring everything's set. You're grenade launcher inventory consists of four high explosive and two smoke rounds. For the hand-held variety you have two frag, two flash, and a smoke grenade. A standard load-out, all around. You consider bringing along flares, but the flashlight on your rifle and shoulder will probably cover things. Probably.

Soon the moment comes where warning lights spark to life, and as your stomach seems to fall you know you're out. Even so, you find yourself holding your breath until a crewman gives the all-clear.

"Not the most astonishing place," Delmar notes as images of the orange planet appear on a number of screens. "But I suppose it could have it's charms."

"Come down and experience it yourself, Captain," Christina suggests, getting a wholehearted chuckle from Delmar. "You might enjoy the change of atmosphere."

"Someone must keep a quick escape ready," He says. "Just in case."

"Ever the warrior," She notes wryly before turning to you and the others. "Well, off to it then. Let's not keep Eric waiting."

Having been occupied with your own thoughts and worries over gear, you almost bowl straight into a large man in carapace. Though that in of itself isn't overly concerning, what is are the number of tubes twisting and winding down the armor's chest, arms, and back.

"Apologies, Father," You quickly say as you walk.

"Perfectly alright, my son," Mikel answers, hefting an impressive weapon you weren't expecting. When he notices you staring he laughs. "My faith in the Emperor protects my soul. My skill with a shotgun protects my body."

Staring for a few seconds, the only thing you can really do is smile and shake your head.

"Now that's a church slogan I can get behind," You tell him, and the Father nods in agreement.

You all reach the hangar bay shortly after to find Alpha already waiting. With Vincent leading the armsmen and Delmar being Delmar, that leaves Leo and Melodi on the ship, though you suppose neither of them would be much help in a firefight.

"Our main objective is the capitol city, and by that I mean the only city, of Aleso," Christina explains as you all board her transport; a heavily modified Aquila Lander. "The entire planet is dark, minus the beacon our agent has on him. We're fairly certain he's holed up in the PDF garrison, so that's where we'll start."

Everyone finds a seat and buckles in, and within moments you feel yourself going airborne. Opposite of you, Roxie is clutching at her stomach with her head tilted back.

"Everything alright, Sergeant?" You ask.

"I frakking hate flying," She mutters into her vox. "Always feel like I'm about to lose my lunch."

"Please lose it outside of my general direction," Jami requests.

"If it wasn't for this helmet I'd aim right for you, Jay," She promises, getting a chuckle from the rest of her team.

As you begin your descent the mood is a relaxed one, despite the uncertainty hanging around the rock below you all. Alpha makes small talk while Mikel seems to be in silent prayer. Christina, meanwhile, remains quiet on the outside, but the occasional nod hints at her using a private vox line inside her helmet. Being her bodyguard, you're given a much higher clearance level than most, and you've already memorized most of the major vox lines being used.

On the descent down, you decide to...

One of the advantages of having a fully enclosed suit of armor is being able to hold a conversation (or blast music) without the people near you hearing.

With no one paying you too much attention, you flip through the vox channels designated for Warlock. They left a time before you, so chances are they're just now deploying. After a few bursts of static voices begin to come through.

"-ting down in the market square, over."

"Roger, two. Three's inbound for that hospital on east-side. Throne, what's left of it anyways. Anybody got eyes on movement?"

"Negative... and Ack Ack said a thousand people live here? It's a frakking ghost town."

"My favorite."

"Enough, both of you. Proceed to your objectives and report your findings. No surprises."

You flip through a handful more.

"Wait, so she's coming HERE?"

"Yeah, man. Lady M herself."

"Well, shit."

"Uh huh."

"You heard him, people! Lock it down nice and pretty for the Lady!"

A flash of orange catches your eye and you turn to see the city displayed on a pictfeed inside the cabin, showing transports descending or rising from various parts of it. Far from the largest or most advanced city you've ever seen, you doubt it even has much of an undercity, if any at all. As you look on you see what the armsmen were talking about.

Aside from the transports and the men they dropped off, the entire place was utterly still and, you would wager a guess, quiet.

"We're setting down right on top of the main PDF garrison," Eric's voice comes through the Lander's speakers. "They've even rolled out the welcome wagon for us."

Everyone prepares to step off, and as you do the same you try and garner anything useful from the broadcasts.

>>

the =][='s name is Christina Massey, or Lady Massey...
>>
>>32170848

You've got a fairly good idea that, whatever you know, Christina probably knows more. With that in mind you decide it best to remain quiet and your rifle ready. A small shudder goes through ship as you land, and by the time the ramp begins to lowers you and the others are already moving.

Outside, you step down to the sight of your typical PDF headquarters. You mean that literally, as it's about as in shambles as every other PDF building you've seen. What looks to be a hastily made barricade lays shattered all around the front entrance and the stairway leading up to it. A platoon of armsmen mill about cautiously, lasguns at the ready. A squad greets you as you depart, snapping to attention with a man with bars of Lieutenant standing in front.

"Ma'am," He says, giving a crisp salute.

"What's the situation?" She asks, and as you look around you quickly notice the obvious.

Lots of battle damage.

Quite a bit of blood here and there.

But not a single body to be found.

"It's a mess, ma'am," The man informs her. "Looks like whatever happened here happened fast and dirty. We're working on cracking the door's security right now, so they should be done by the time you arrive. If you want, we co-"

"Secure the area and watch our backs, Lieutenant," Christina orders him, moving before he can reply. Wordlessly you, Alpha, and Mikel follow her through the destruction and up the stairway. True to his word, a number of armsmen are gathered around a pair of heavy metal doors that mark the entrance to the garrison. As you approach, however, you note what looks like claw marks on the metal with quiet unease.

(Cont.)
>>
You heard him, people! Lock it down nice and pretty for the Lady!
now if the area was allready sealed and they did not know what happened why would they need to lock it down? pls bring this up with the inquisiter as soon as you can
>>
>>32171510

"Waiting on you, ma'am," One of them says, and with a nod from her they key the console and the doors begin to open with a groan.

"Alpha, on me," Roxy said over her squad's vox. "Jami, take point."

For once the forlorn trooper gives no qualm, moving quickly and quietly inside with flashlight glowing bright as the squad vanishes into the darkness inside. After a few seconds the sergeant's voice came through again on the team's primary channel.

"Clear."

"After you, Lieutenant," Christina signals you forward, and with a flip of a switch you're illuminated as well.

Taking a breath, you enter.

Once more you're thankful for the secured armor, as you don't even want to think of the smell the room probably holds. More blood, a few hints of gore, and the scorch marks of lasfire is scattered about the front office. Behind the front desk, or what's left of it, Jonah seems to be trying to raise the computer's machine spirit, but to limited success.

"Anything useful?" Roxy asks.

"Give me five, maybe ten minutes," Jonah says, disappearing beneath the desk.

On either side of the desk a hallway branches off in either direction, though both lack any sort of light themselves.

"Where do you want us, ma'am?" Roxy asks.

"We find our man," Christina says, tapping her wrist. "Be a dear and keep an eye out for trouble while I do a bit of tracking."

While Dominic remains behind to watch over Jonah, the rest follow Christina down the left hall, weapons at the ready.

If you would like another one for the next thread post the lines near the end of this one and I'll try to get a working link so you can stick it in the OP of the next. If you want that is.
>>
>>32171670

The scene before you continues to unfold as a grim one; a mixture of blood, gore, and the scorched hints of lasfire telling a bloody tale the farther down the hall you go. However, nothing seems to give a serious clue as to the who, what, and why.

It isn't until you turn the corner that you get your first major find. A bit obvious, but nonetheless surprising. It's writing on the wall, consisting of something oddly dark:

'HIS LIGHT BANISHES THE DARKNESS.'

"...huh," Is all Roxy can come up with as you all stare. "This bodes well."

"Yup," Gabriel grunts, hefting his melta. Good thing we're loaded for crazy."

As you continue farther inside more messages appear, each one more mad and bizarre than the last. However, one message in particular stops you dead in your tracks:

'BEGONE, DAEMONS!'

Suddenly, the darkness on either ends of the hall seem more pronounced than it did before. You try and fight the paranoia down, and for the most part you manage. Even still, you grip your rifle a bit tighter than you did before.

"Boss," Jonah's voice crackles into your helmet. "I'm in."

"And?" She asks, turning away from the words. "Don't leave us in suspense."

"Most of it's shit, but I can get some of the very basics like power consumption."

"And?"

"The entire base is dead... except for the armory. Looks like whatever reserve power this place has is being funneled into it."

"Let me guess," You say, looking to Christina. "That's where you're leading us?"

"I wasn't entirely sure it was the armory, but yes," She nods. "Is that a problem?"

"Of course not, ma'am," You're quick to assure her.

"Then let's go find out who's still alive," She says, oddly cheerful given the circumstances.

(Cont.)
>>
>>32173270
(Oh, damn, that sound kickass. I think, since it'll more or less stay the same, voicing over the opening paragraph alone would work just fine, but I'll take whatever you're willing to give, friend.)

>>32173281

Perhaps the worst part so far is the fact that nothing has tried to kill you yet. At least then you'd have something to concentrate on. Instead, you watch the shadows and wait for it to happen.

However, the moment never comes and you reach the armory without incident.

Like a scaled-down version of the Antebellum's, the doors are durable things that look like they're been through quite the beating.

Alpha takes up position on either side preparing to breach, and with a nod from Christina you join them.

"Hold one," Jonah says, and a few moments later you hear the door's mechanisms begin to click and whirr.

"Popping the lock in three... two... one..."

The door slides open and a flash bang goes flying through to begin a textbook breach and clear. It goes off a moment later, eliciting a surprised cry and sporadic gunfire from inside. And like that, you're in-

-and nearly blinded as, even as your visor darkens to maximum, what seems like another flash bang goes off right in front of you. However, there's no bang and it remains, and a few quick shots kill the lights in a shower of sparks.

"NO!" A voice cries from somewhere inside, and you make out a figure running for a side door. "LIGHT COMBATS THE DARKNESS!"

"Hold the hell up!" Roxy barks, but he doesn't seem too keen on stopping.

That is, until you intervene.

His uniform is ragged and dirty, but you can safely guess PDF. The pistol in his hand is a slugthrower, so you're relatively certain he couldn't do much harm to you. With that thought process, you cut him off just before he hits the door.

"LIGHT COMBA-"

You've never been on the receiving end, but you can guess getting hit by a man armored in carapace is a bit like going up against a freight train. You both slam into the wall, and you hear the man's pistol go clattering away as he squirms in your grip.

>It's alright, trooper You're safe now ah father Mikel a little help here?

This. The Good Fathers always know what to say.

Except if it's a Catholic Father talking to a little boy.

You want to say this is new, but a nagging feeling says something like this has happened to you before. Careful to keep his hands away from any sort of weapon, you give the man a few light pats on the back.

"It's alright, trooper," You tell him, tone softening. "You're safe now."

"No, no, no," The man whimpers, beginning to shake. "No it's not. Nowhere's safe. They're everywhere. They see EVERYTHING."

"Who?" You ask, and feel the man shudder violently. When he speaks next, it's nothing more than a whisper.

"The monsters."

He goes limp once more, and you're not sure if he's blacked out or finally snapped. All the same, you nod your thanks when Father Mikel picks the man up off you and set him onto a nearby table.

However, as he begins to tend to the man and the squad gathers round you realize something.

Lady Massey's missing.

Or so you think, for one panicking moment, before you hear the clank of powered armored boots and see her appear from the same door the man had hoped to find safety in.

"Well, I have good news and I have bad news," She reports.

"The good news?" You ask.

"I've found the beacon," She says, holding up what you think is a high tech dataslate of some sort.

"And... the bad?"

"Our man's nowhere to be seen. Or anyone else, for that matter."

Sorry folks, but I'm gonna end it here. I apologize for the hiccup tonight, but I can in no way promise it won't happen again. Being nearly five years old, my laptop has created a burning hatred for me, and I of it.

Still, hope you all had fun. G'night.

If OP wanted a roll with that choice, it might have gone that way...

Thanks for the thread op, whens the next session time?
>>

Thanks for running OP. And why are all the quests today ending on cliff-hangers?
>>
>>32174119

Oh boy, good question. First, I need to appease the machine spirit of my device and go from there. Maybe a thread Sunday, but my hands are tied tomorrow. Or today, as it currently stands.

Anymore questions before I head out?

To make sure we keep our players interested when shit like this happens.

Out of curiosity, what are you hoping to do with this quest? It is a WH40k Slice of Life quest, or Serenity in WH40k?
>>
>>32174198
That's a good question, actually. I think a bit of both sums it up rather well, since I plan on there being more to this quest than just constant exterminatus and xeno dicking (Metaphorically).

>Nodo treachery

Ok Captcha, calm down...

Haha, night.

Thanks for running.
