LAST EPISODE: You checked out some real estate, did a conference call, and got a drink order.
- - -

"So," Sato says as he loads up YOMI-1 with a cooler of drinks for the road trip. "Kayako's mom stuffed her full of evil humors, or essence, or slime, or whatever as a kid. Which turned her into a PKE time bomb."

"Right." You say.

"She got into a bad marriage, and her husband killed her, her son, the family cat, and then killed herself." He continues.

"Right." You say.

"So, instead of just a ghost from the humors, or a Trauma Ghost, they got combined together into an entity that was strong enough to attract the power of Oiwa, and merge with it. Causing it to grow even MORE powerful." Sato says.

"Still right." You say.

"And she's been collecting victims and adding them to herself, creating a Legion-Class Entity, which is even MORE powerful, and still growing with every victim she gets." Sato says.

"Batting 1000." You say.

"And we think a bottle of rice wine is the answer." Sato says. "Well, as the ancients say 'The largest lion is still weak to the tiniest thorn.'...or something like that."

You shrug.

"So, we're going on a road trip then?" Sato asks.

"Yeah, to Kayako's mother's temple. We should be able to find a bottle of sake with her blessing on it. Maybe we'll find more clues to beating her as well." You say.

"There is precedent for this." Star says as she joins you two. "Items that have a certain PKE frequency to them can be devastating to ghosts that operate on similar valences. Dr. Spengler's written a lot on it."

"Still amazes me you understand all that PKE Frequency tech talk." Sato says.

She shrugs. "Anyway, are we all going?"

"Might be nice to have someone here on the phone for research." Akira says. "Or we can keep a stakeout on the house, make sure it doesn't try anything, and keep anyone else from adding to the problem."

"Let's all go." You say. "Sana can hold down the fort and take calls."

"It is what we pay her for." Akira says.

"Let me go ask Sachiko if she wants to come." You say. You open the door...and there she is. She's dressed in her robes and has a carrying case for her bow and arrows.

"What?" She asks. "You don't think I'd let you idiots tramp around a shrine without me, did you?"

"Well..." You say.

"Save it, cutie." She says pushing her stuff into your arms. "I call shotgun, I actually know where this place is."

Sato smirks. "Okay, have fun." He says. "Enjoy Akira's driving."

Ten minutes later, you're all on the road, and Sachiko has finally stopped screaming/swearing/praying as she encounters Akira's style of Driving.

Star laughs at the priestess' distress.

Sachiko turns and gives her a withering look, and then she turns cross. "Damnit Star!" She snaps.

"What?" She asks.

"Red eyes, sleep deprivation bags, your hands are shaking..." Sachiko says.

"There was a party two nights ago, all I had was a few beers." She says. "And drop it!"

Sachiko fumes. "I swear to the heavens about, if you're still on your Uncle's stuff..."

"That was years ago, and it's NONE of your business." She snaps. "DROP. IT."

Sachiko looks at Akira.

Akira shakes his head. "She just had a few beers. Honest, and the place is clean. We checked."

Star makes a sound of disgust and shakes her head.

"You shouldn't be drinking at all." Sachiko says.

"I'm not having this discussion." Star says.

"ANYway..." Sato says, changing the subject. "Sachiko...what can we expect when we get there?"

She shrugs. "It'll probably be abandoned. Maybe squatters. It's not like these places have labyrinths below them where we have giant iron doors, sealed for ages that hold back hordes of long-forgotten demons."

The rest of you look at her with looks of horror, disbelief, and a general 'Why did you SAY that?' on your faces.

"Seriously, it'll be just like mine, but not as cosy." Sachiko says.

"Is there anything else you can tell us about Kayako's mother?" You ask Sachiko. "Without spilling any important secrets?"

Sachiko sighs. "Well, first, take the turn on the left that's coming up." She winces as Akira makes a sharp turn from the highway onto a rural road. "Great. Head down this way about 25 kilometers, then turn on the old road on the right and that'll take us right there."

"Got it." Akira says. "But answer the question."

She groans. "She was considered to be very...traditional. I suppose that's a good word to use. She was respected for that, and respected for her ability...which now has a lot more connotations to me now as when I first heard it."

"So she was powerful?" Sato asks.

"I guess. I mean, not every priestess can do that think with the humors." She says.

"You could." You say.

"Yeah, on Kali." She says. "On a regular human, I probably couldn't do with without a lot more practice and training. Anyway, she had a lot of power, but she was apparently kind of a bitch. So she was respected, but not Respected. If you get what I'm saying."

"The ancients would perhaps call him: A General with a mighty sword arm, but no troops at his back?" Sato says. "Or something like that?"

"I guess." Sachiko says. "Anyway, I think she fell into some money problems after the bubble burst, and never got all the way back on her feet. I mean, when you're a bitch, people aren't lining up to help you. My temple got more donations and support, people liked Miyagi...my predecessor and mentor."

"Wait, did they name the diner after her?" Akira asks.

Sachiko nods. "Yup. She also showed me all the stuff she was doing for the neighborhood. Lovely woman."

(cont)
>>
>>32147666
I guess I'm alone in my convictions, then.
>>
>>32147707
"So," You say. "Kayako's mother fell on hard times, and no one was there to help her, but she had her power, and an easy way to 'help' people."

Sachiko nods. "That's about as much as I can confirm. We didn't know about the whole mess until after Kayako had run off with her boyfriend and disappeared...until she was murdered."

"Was Kayako's mother...a good mother?" Star asks.

Sachiko frowns and shrugs. "I can't say, but I don't think she was going to win any rewards, especially if she was using her child in ways I Cannot Say."

"So she runs off with the first guy that she manages to snag, and has a kid with him really quick to seal the deal." Star sighs. "What a mess."

"This it?" Akira asks as he pulls up to a small parking lot that's in front of a long set of stone stairs, not unlike Sachiko's place.

"Oh thank all the merciful Heavens." Sachiko sags in relief as the car stops. "Yes."

You all pile out, and gear up.

"Hey, Sachiko, since when did my nickname become Cutie?" You ask as you strap on your pack.

Sachiko blushes and turns away from you as she strings her bow. "One: get over yourself. Two: you're not THAT cute, but you're not as ugly as the Master of Ancient Wisdom, or Trigger Happy is. Three: get over yourself."

You all walk up the stairs to the shrine. The gate door is closed, but it looks slightly rotted, there's graffiti carved into it, and lots of dust. This place does look abandoned.

>>
>>32147767
You put on your ecto-goggles, and the others do the same.

The place is...well, to use a horrific turn of phrase, a dead zone.

There's zero PKE activity detected. Zero sources of mood slime. Zero sources of any activity at all. That's weird in itself, as any place should have at least a little sign. There are trees, plant life, and it looks like people have been here in the past. All of that should leave SOME PKE activity. But no, nothing.

You knock on the door.

No response.

You knock harder.

Still nothing.

You see a rope for a bell pull, you pull on it. There's a small chime as an old rusted bell over the gate rings.

You hear movement, and then, in the gap between the gate door and the posts, you see a face.

"Look, no one's here." A male voice says. "And you aren't cops, or you'd come in already, so fuck off."

"Looks like someone's here." Akira says.

"Yeah, well, I'm not someone you want to know." The man says. "So, unless you have business with us, which I KNOW you don't, I'm telling you again. Leave now."

"This is a sacred shrine, and I am a holy priestess! I DEMAND entry!" Sachiko says.

"Lady, this place has been empty for months, all that spiritual junk was hauled off ages ago." The man says.

"All of it?" Akira asks. "Damn it."

"Yeah, sorry." The man says, obviously not sorry at all. "So, take off."

"Dude...Ghostbusters?" The man says. "Seriously?"

You turn and show him your shoulder patch on your uniform.

"That's awesome! Oh man, I'm in your fan club!" There's an unlocking of a bolt, and the gate swings open.

The man is certainly homeless. Heavy jacket over a lighter jacket, over a shirt, a worn beanie cap on his head, and a few missing teeth. He shows that he has his own official Iron-On-Patch pinned to his inner jacket.

"So you're here to see the creepy thing?" He says, motioning you to follow.

"What creepy thing?" You ask.

"Well, when we got here, there was this one room with the creepy thing in it, so we decided to not touch it." He says.

As you walk through the temple compound it's clear that it's become a small tent city. There's people sitting on the ground around a small fire pit. Can't be more than 20 people. They've repurposed the place to be a decent squat.

Sachiko looks upset at the whole situation.

(cont)
>>
>>32148655
The inside of the temple has been converted into as best a shelter as could be made. There's a kitchen, a sleeping area for when it rains, and...apparently an empty room where people can gaze into nothing. You don't see any active drug use, but you expect that's why people have the privacy of their own tent, or are waiting in line for the washroom.

"Lovely." Akira says. "So, no one bothers you out here?" He asks your host.

"Nah." The man says. "People think the place is haunted. We're trying not to let other people know about this place though, don't want it too crowded or people will notice and the police will make a fuss. Or worse." He stops mid-way at the hall and motions down the hall at a door at the end. "That's the creepy thing. We don't get much closer than that. Thanks for coming Ghostbusters! This is so cool of you, oh, the warning isn't real...well the last part isn't. We just did that to scare people."

A pair of gloved hands shake yours gratefully for a moment, before the man walks away.

You all head to the end of the hall, and look at the door there, there's a page taped to it.

DO NOT OPEN. NOT EVEN IF YOU'RE CURIOUS. SERIOUSLY CREEPY STUFF INSIDE. THE LAST GUY WHO DID HAD HIS DICK FALL OFF. GO WAIT FOR THE BATHROOM LIKE EVERYONE ELSE.

"Why is it a bunch of bums are showing more sense than half the population of Tokyo?" Akira asks.

"Umm, that door breach thing is where we stand on either side of the door while you open it right?" Sato asks.

"Yeah, and corner sweeps are important." Akira says. "Umm...how do we do those?"

"We are so pathetic." Star groans. "Look, the PKE meters are still flatlining, so...I guess let's just try and not look too stupid."

"STAY OUT!" A voice shrieks at you and you're knocked backwards, landing flat on your back.

You're also blinded and deaf. There's nothing but a white haze and ringing in your hears, you feel something wet dripping from your nose.

"YOU WOULD NOT HELP ME. NOW I NEED NO HELP. BEGONE PRIESTESS, AND TAKE YOUR UR EXORCISTS WITH YOU." You hear those words...in your voice. "THIS IS MY SANCTUARY. MY HOME. THERE IS NOTHING HERE THAT IS YOURS, NOTHING HERE THAT I WILL LET YOU USE. LEAVE ME. THIS IS YOUR ONLY WARNING. DO NOT ASK ME ABOUT THE GIRL. I WASH MY HANDS OF HER. SHE IS YOUR CONCERN PRIESTESS, NOT MINE. BEGONE, BEGONE, BEGONE!"

Your vision slowly returns and so does your hearing. You're also covered in posi-slime. Your people, and a bunch of the squatters are all staring at you.

"Told you that thing was creepy!" Your fan says.

"You got hit by...something." Star says. "Then there was a light possession, and you were babbling a bit, and then some entity was speaking through you."

"Told you she was a bitch." Sachiko says.

"Yeah." Akira says. "No kidding."

"We think Kayako's mother is hiding in that room...in one form or another. Also, she's the one responsible as to why this place is a dead zone." Sato says. "It's to keep her daughter out."

(cont)

>>32149380
"Great." You say, getting to your feet. "So...now what? Could we try negotiating?"

"We tried that." Star says. "Talking to you, or the door. Her response is pretty much 'Fuck off, my daughter's YOUR problem now. Leave me alone.' Such a charming woman."

"Well, we could try forcing our way in." Akira says with a smile. "Show the old hag who's boss."

"If we could find a way to break her Null Barrier then she might be more open to dealing with us." Sato says.

"If we get something of Kayako's, or Oiwa's, and bring it inside the barrier on our own, then she'd have other things to deal with." Star says.

"Okay, I may not get a lot of this." Sachiko says. "But isn't this barrier that the old woman is making, protecting these people?" She gestures to the homeless. "What happens if we take it down and a pissed off daughter ghost comes looking for her mother?"

"Nothing good...but if she's still here and has THAT much power...then that means there's something we can use, or convert, that will be effective." Akira says.

You really hope so at least, provided that you've made sense of what that old vampire was telling you.

The door flings open and you're knocked on your ass again. Your vision swims again and your ears ring. Uph, that old woman hits like a freight train.

She doesn't seem to be possessing you now though, so you pull yourself up.

Ah, her door is open. Maybe she just wanted to show you that she was pissed at you strong arming her. You walk inside.

The place has a small shrine in the center, but it's covered with melted candle wax, there's some offering bowls, a picture, two wrapped bottles of sake, and small piles of burnt incense ash. There's also a large assortment of small carved pieces of wood, little strings of beads, and other things carefully arranged. It's all covered with dust, ash, and wax so you'd have to poke around a bit for a better look.

There's a small bedroll to one side, a chamber pot, a hot plate, and a small pot and a kettle.

The room is dominated by bags of rice, and boxes upon boxes of candles and incense. The smell of sweet smoke and melted candle wax is overpowering.

There's a lumpy figure underneath the cover of the bedroll. It's not moving.

Take a stick of incense, light it and place it in the incense holder before the shrine, and strike the bell once.
Just because we extorted a dead soul who simply wants to forget the tragedies of her past with the threat of her Legion-class malevolent daughter, doesn't mean we can't do the right thing.

Then we grab the sake and leave.

Look, I know that you want to wash your hands of this. I get it; you were trying to do something you thought was right, but you made mistakes and people got hurt. And now that you're beyond the veil, you want to let it go.
But it doesn't work like that. Things don't just end, not unless you give them an ending. Your daughter is hurting people, and now she's become part of something much worse, a cycle that will continue hurting people because someone didn't get an ending way back when. And it will never end until someone does something about it, until WE do something about it. We just need one thing from you, ONE thing. We need one of your bottles of sake and then we'll never trouble you again. We'll let you rest.
I promise.

>>
>>32152428
>>32152501

You grab a fresh candle and incense stick from the boxes and light them. You carefully locate the bell in all of the mess and ring it.

You take a deep breath and close your eyes and clasp your hands.

"I understand that you want to wash your hands of this. You were doing what you thought was right, mistakes were made, people got hurt, and now that you're on the Other Side, you want to be able to let go.

"But it doesn't work like that. Your daughter is hurting people, and it's just getting worse and worse. It won't end until we make it end, and we need your help. All we need is one of your bottles of sake, and we'll never trouble you again. You can rest, and hopefully your daughter can rest as well."

Your response comes as a blow to the head.

You open your eyes and pull yourself up. Sachiko is standing there, holding the kettle in her hand. She snarls at you.

"You DARE!" She says in a voice that is NOT here. "You DARE order ME? Make demands of ME? I who am the greatest Priestess Japan has seen since the Feudal Era?! I who could command spirits, bind oni, and pull the very essence from others? You come in to MY temple, with your toys, and tricks, and forgotten Patron, and you make demands OF ME? And you have the nerve to suggest that I made a MISTAKE!? I DON'T MAKE MISTAKES! SHE WAS THE MISTAKE! SHE WAS WEAK...JUST AS THIS GIRL IS. JUST AS YOU ARE!"

She grabs one of the bottles of sake, and hurls it against the wall where it smashes to pieces.

"No! DON'T!" You yell as you grab the second one at the same time she does. You're head is still spinning from the blow, so your grab is off, but it's enough to knock it out of her reach and knock it across the room. "We're just trying to help fix things!"

"THERE'S NOTHING TO FIX! I HAVE DONE NOTHING WRONG!" She snarls.

She backs away towards the bedroll, and bends down, picking up a kitchen knife.

She holds it against Sachiko's throat.

Daisuke published a report that got people killed, careers destroyed, and himself turned into a social pariah that even a burakumin wouldn't go near. He did this because of his sense of justice; that the right thing needs to be done even if it kills people, and he hasn't truly regretted ever doing it.

"There's nothing to talk about. The priesthood was scared of me and my power, so they ABANDONED me to ROT, and when I FOUND a way. A way that NO OTHER could do...they had the nerve to censor me, and my ungrateful daughter ran away! She DESERVED what she got, turning her back on her mother!"

"Please...there's no need for more death. We can help you pass on." You say, slowly turning on your pack.

"I do not WANT to pass on. I was not READY to die, and I was not SUPPOSED to die surrounded in FILTH as my daughter HOUNDED me! I AM THE GREATEST PRIESTESS...I DESERVE RESPECT AND HONOR DUE TO ONE SUCH AS I."

She takes a breath. "Now...leave. Or the Faithless One will LEARN what SERVICE to the spirits is PROPERLY...under MY tutelage."

Does he really revel in it outside of the gameshow which was, I thought, us playing along?

Like I know there was an anon who really WANTED him to be this psychotic, murdering, torturing J-drama "hero" but I at least have noticed a lot of subtle regret at the damage, if not following his principles.

I dunno. GM, am I high here? Like a little behind the scenes insight would be nice.

I'd imagine, it's a little bit of both really. he's ultimately confused, whether or not he should accept himself for what happened or he should condemn himself.

But ultimately, if given the opportunity to do it again, he would. Because whatever happens and however he feels about it, it was the right thing to do.

I wonder though.

From his past, we know Daisuke believed in justice over altruism and willingly knew that his actions would lead to many people undergoing "train delays".

But then, we had to kill Kali's groups original leader because , out of a sense of altruism because we knew if she lived she would be leading to the deaths of many others (and us).

Maybe we should just chalk that one up to self defense. . .

That could possibly backfire. Don't need her absorbing mommy dearest into the house collective and making her stronger.
>>
>>32153235
Problem is with a gun it's usually clear cut, bang they are dead.

I might be remembering wrong but there was a point where she was beaten and crippled still going on about how she would kill us, and then we pulled the trigger and turned her to ash.

If it was that she pounced on us and then we incinerated her midair or something then that was very much self defense without a doubt
>>
>>32153384
Anything that doesn't absolutely kill a vampire is only going to take them out for a time. If she said she was going to come after us and then go on to be a superpredator, she meant it. At that point, we had no real choice.
>>
>>32153407
We could have jailed her though, developing a prison for vampires is ghostbuster terrain. Hell, wizards managed to do it with pairs of socks.

If we had the opportunity to contain something but chose to kill it, is that really right?

>Anything that doesn't absolutely kill a ghost is only going to take them out for a time

>>32153434
That's a really interesting point.
I'd say that she made it quite clear that she would not stop her course of action. She made her choice and proved to be someone too dangerous to let live, both for ourselves and for others.
Was it absolutely right? Probably not. But it was one of the better choices in the moment. She was dangerous, she wasn't going to stop, and if we hadn't put her down she'd have put US down.
>>32153457
>walterpeckturningitoff.gif
>>
>>32153457
The containment unit can't handle physical undead like a vampire.

>>32153434
We had neither the equipment to contain her, nor was she showing any signs of surrendering, and she continued to resist to the last moment.
>>
Dealing with Kayako's mother will have to wait for another day. But we definitely shouldn't forget about her. Right now, though, GB Japan have bigger fish to slime.
>>
>>32153434
>If we had the opportunity to contain something but chose to kill it
Except we had no opportunity to contain Rin. She was fighting to get loose from the stasis stream until the very end, and she would have gotten free except that Akira just barely made the roll to hit her with a Meson Collider.
>>
>>32153508
>>32153530
I can understand the lack of equipment at the time, but still if we really wanted to subdue her alive we could have tried amputating her limbs with our guns (brutal, but so is killing someone). Then we just build a special cage and make sure she won't grow her arms and legs back, or find a magical way to bind her.

Still, lots of other ghosts we've captured and resisted even at the last moment, many more deadly than she. If it was justified to kill her, could it be justified to get rid of other ghosts as aggressive as her?

This all, hypothetical of course.
>>
>>32153508
I'm pretty sure the world understands at this point how SUICIDAL turning off a GB containment unit is. It's most likely considered the equivalent of using a nuclear weapon in a civilized area of the first world.

Now, this isn't to say that containment units are forever, but they'll most likely be extremely rare occurences.
>>
>>32153580
Ah, well then that's fine, like someone getting killed by a grenade you can't prevent that. Or like I said, someone pouncing or about to pounce and then someone else delivering the fatal shot.

I thought it was that she was crippled and then we chose to kill, but in this case it wasn't.
>>
>>32153620
>just build a special cage and make sure she won't grow her arms and legs back
Not just no, HELL no. There's worse things than undeath and that sure is one of them.
>>
>>32153620
>we could have tried amputating her limbs with our guns
Not really possible, given the way that the proton stream reacts to a vampire's energy field and causes them to ignite and burn into ashes.
Also, she wasn't a ghost, but a vampire. There is a very real difference between the two.
Vampires can be destroyed.
Ghosts can be contained, but I'm fairly sure that a permanent means of ghost destruction hasn't been found yet.
>>
>>32153267
That is true.

We should also say if it's really a bad deal, hire us and we'll take care of it.
>>
>>32153651
If only the problem wasn't compounding and we reduce the amount of ghosts inside them overtime, than just a perpetually growing problem waiting to happen.

But you could say that for a lot of things I guess, nobody plans nuclear facilities to run forever and by the time no one is left around to maintain them, it really doesn't matter.
>>
>>32153703
Except they're homeless.
>>
>>32153680
Getting them to cross over into the final beyond is usually the ticket to permanent 'destruction'.
>>
>>32153703
>hire us
They're homeless. What are they going to pay us with? Expired rice balls and sandwiches they scavenged from the garbage dumpster behind a 7-11 or AM/PM?
>>
>>32153727
Except that there isn't a reliable method of passing beyond that can be scaled up to industrial levels. I think they tried a particle accelerator once, and that didn't work.
>>
>>32153664
Yeah, the containment unit is pleasant at least.
>>32153680
If we can destroy a god with a nuclear explosion (ivo Shandor) what's to stop us from destroying ghosts?
The ghost bomb for example is designed to annihilate any ecto energies in a 50 yard radius.
>>
>>32153773
Also, I am of the inclination that destroying ghosts would be a form of passing on.
A ghost is a physical manifestation of the soul, in the same way the body is a physical agent of the soul. The soul is not destroyed when the body is damaged, neither can it be destroyed when the ghost is damaged as both are physical manifestations.

Look at how other ghosts have passed on, one moment they were here and the next their physical manifestation was gone, essentially, wiped from the world.

Otherwise, are we to believe that people like Ivo Shandor or the hundreds at Hiroshima vaporized by nuclear weapons didn't pass on?
>>
You take a deep breath and shake your head. "Look, we don't have the equipment to handle something as creepy as that with us right now, we didn't expect it to be so strong. For now, no one goes into that room." You say. "But, that creepiness that's in there? It's keeping any other ghosts and youkai out. So long as you don't bother it, it won't bother you and will keep other creepy things away. If you want, you can keep it around, like a ghost guard dog."

"Seriously?" He asks. "Like there are other creepy things trying to bother us?"

Akira nods. "Oh yeah, empty abandoned temple, I mean, you've seen the movies right? This place is prime creepy real estate."

"Huh." The fan says.

"Anyway, if it does start causing more trouble, or just when you like..." Star hands him a business card. "You can call us, and we'll come down with all of our best stuff and deal with it. But then we're going to have to talk about fees and compensation for KEEPING this place spook free."

"Yeah. I mean," Sato says. "We can do this first one for free, no problem, since it was a related job, and we never leave a house half-haunted...but further services."

"Yeah, yeah." The fan says waving his hand. "I get it man, we all gotta make a buck." He sighs. "You sure it's gonna stay in that room?"

"The moment it doesn't, call us and we'll rush over here to kick it's ass." Akira says. "No charge."

"Nice." He nods. "Okay. Thanks. Really cool meeting you, Ghostbusters."

You all exit the temple grounds and get back into the car.

Sachiko looks at her slimed robes. "You are SO paying for my dry-cleaning." She says.

Star holds up the bottle. "Will a drink fix things?"

"Only if it's beer...and YOU shouldn't be drinking." Sachio says.

"Ugh...you're worse than my moth..." Star stops. "I hate this job."

As an example, you already said that because of the Ghost Roll and the crit, that Sachiko was possessed and that we still had time to grab a sake bottle.

>>
>>32153773
>what's to stop us from destroying ghosts
The massive energy involved, the necessary equipment and resources required to build such a device.
Yes, a ghost bomb exists. It's also a one-time use device. Are you going to get one and use it every time the number of ghosts in the containment unit reaches a certain threshold?
>>
>>32153944
It would certainly be a cost effective way to prevent apocalypses, or which each and every containment unit is one.

Having everything bank on one big bang is risky though, was thinking more along the lines of slowly leaking excess energy into a controlled nuclear reactor/incinerator. Letting out only small bits at a time to ensure complete matter annihilation, and let some steam out of the pressure cooker that only gets worse not better.
