You easily won your match using Zappy Dan. Now that he’s become more comfortable in his fully evolved body, he’s more powerful than you could have imagined.

You do your best to watch and cheer on both Jeanine and Robin. Jeanine is battling the kid, while Robin is battling Carl, the nice older guy with the peppered hair and slight stubble.

You head to Robin’ match first. Clair is watching from the sideline. It looks like they’re both out one Pokemon. Now you see Robin’s Eevee against a Pokemon you don’t recognize. It’s body is a little like Zappy Dan’s, a large metal disc. This Pokemon is spikey and plant-like though. You take out your Pokedex. That old familiar computerized voice begins to speak as information fills the screen. “Pharaoh-Porn,” the text says Ferrothorn. “The Thorn Pod Pokemon. The parts not covered in metal spikes are covered in green spikes.” Real helpful.

Odd as it is, you missed having it do this.

Robin’s match looks like it’ll go awhile. Her Eevee is having a hard time working around it’s defenses, but it also has a hard time landing anything solid on Eevee. You run to see Jeanine’s match.

Her Charmander, Ignis, is poisoned but putting up a good fight against a Pokemon you recognize as Butterfree. You take out your Pokedex again anyway.

“Butt**free, The Butt***** Pokemon. Water repellent dust keeps it’s wings from getting wet in the rain. Butterfrees are able to find even the smallest amount of honey in flowers. Since it’s drawn to sweet smells, stinky trainers rarely see them.” Stupid Pokedex.

You watch for a short while until Jeanine takes the win! She excitedly hugs Vance and congratulates her Pokemon and the kid. The kid actually takes it very well. He just seems happy to have a battle where he was taken seriously.

You run back just in time to see Robin lose the match as Eevee is no longer able to deal with Ferrothorns attacks. She collects Eevee, shakes Carl’s hand, and slowly walks towards you.

You can’t see her face from this angle. You haven’t seen her lose before, so you’re not sure how she takes it.

You try to get a look at her face. She looks up and smiles at you with her mouth, but not her eyes. You were going to ask how she’s doing, but you can read her face like a book.

“You did really well. The match-up just wasn’t in you favor. Typing is hard to overcome.”

Robin hugs you. “Thanks. It’s not that though.”

You put an arm around her and slowly walk towards the others. “Was he mean?”

She shakes her head. “No. He’s like my dad before he became obsessed,” she says without a lot of emotion. She takes a breath and looks off somewhere else. “I don’t think Clair was fighting as hard against me as she did against you. I don’t mind losing, it’s just...Vance is really strong, Jeanine is an aura reader, Clair is psychic and...smarter than me...and you’re a really good trainer and everyone always listens to you.” She doesn’t feel like she brings anything unique to the group. You squeeze her again with your arm. She latches on and walks with you.

Robin seems strongly motivated to make it in the League. You remember what Jeanine said; if you both do well, there’s a chance you’ll face each other.

How do you feel about that?

Facing Robin sends a small thrill down your skin. Not the kind you get when you make her blush in the shower, but a different sensation. It's that exciting feeling you get when you face someone you know will be a challenge. Robin knows more about your strategies than probably anyone else. It'd be a hell of a battle.

You can't wait. When everything is on the line, that's when it'll really matter. You'll both be fighting at your best. You shiver in excitement.

"Hmm?" Robin looks up at you.

"I was just thinking about battling you in the league." To you, it's not even a question. You'll both make it to the finals. You're confident.

She must be able to sense that too, because she's looking a hint more upbeat.

The three trainers you face wave to you as they're heading off. Maybe you'll see them too. Who knows?

Jeanine pinned Vance against a tree and is tasting the inside of his mouth. He looks self-conscious, but he isn't exactly fighting her off. Who would?

Clair walks up beside you. "Ew." She closes her eyes and pulls Jeanine's face backwards with her mind. "That isn't easy to do, but I'm not going to touch them after seeing that."

The five of you keep walking. You take Dan back since he had a match, even if it was pretty easy for him. Raistlin sits in your arms. You and the others let a few Pokemon out at a time to let them get air too.

Time passes and you find yourselves making some good time.

"We're pretty close to Greydon," Vance says as he looks at a map.

Clair's shoulders slump as she walks with slow, lazy steps. "Finally." She probably doesn't get a lot of excercise. This trip might be rough on her.

This isn't a bad camping spot. You can sleep here for the night and get there first thing in the morning, or push on and get there tonight. They don't have a Pokemon Center, but at least it's some sort of civilization.

"That tent looks pretty small," Robin observes. "Did you both get separate ones?" How can Robin be so naive sometimes?

Jeanine and Vance look awkward. Vance scratches behind his head. "Well, since we already shared the big tent, we didn't think this would be a big deal." He looks at Clair. "What? It's just camping! It's not like we're doing anything."

"Ew," Clair says again, unconvinced. Her unimpressed face changes to concern. "Wait, where's mine?"

You stop setting up. "You didn't bring one?"

She crosses her arms and looks indignant. "I just assumed you'd have a spare or something. I don't camp much."

You sit down next to Robin and reach her Biology of Pokemon book over her shoulders for a few minutes. "What do you think a battle between us would be like?"

She puts a finger on her mouth and doesn't speak for a long time. "Hard." There's more silence. Robin nods to herself and gets up. "I'm going to go train." With that, she heads into a wooded area.

"That's a good idea. I'll be back too." You get up and start thinking about who to train. Vance and Jeanine are giving each other googly eyes. You wonder if you and Robin were like this to them.

"I'll come with," Clair declares.

Vance waves you off as you walk away from the campsite. "Dinner won't be long. Be careful!" Jeanine whispers in his ear. "Nevermind! Dinner will still be awhile longer." Uh huh.

You and Clair find a nice spot. She sits on a rock.

You make some smalltalk. "Did you ever try for the league before you became a gym leader?"

She shrugs. "Not really interested. Too public. I can do more of what I want at the gym." She looks into the trees. "It's a lot of work to get there. People get cocky when they beat gym leaders, but we're supposed to just filter out unacceptable trainers, not stop everyone who tries for the league."

You decide not to take that as a personal dig. You change the subject. "Look, if you're serious about traveling, you'll need to pick up some stuff." You list off some traveling gear. She looks like she's taking mental notes.

"So are you going to train or what?"

Right! You have time for one Pokemon tonight.

You take out Vlad and pet him on the head. "Go on and play, but stay out of trouble," you warn him. He does a loops and starts to fly around.

Clair watches him fly around, sometimes out of sight. "You give them a lot of freedom."

You speak before you think. "No. I just don't take it away."

Clair gives a rare, genuinely kind smile. You reach for Raistlin and Destiny's Pokeballs. You'll find a way to train them both at the same time, or at least let Destiny get some exercise while you train Raistlin. You're good at this, you'll figure it out. They're both overdue for evolving.

"What would you do if you had a Pokemon that wasn't going to evolve?" Clair asks.

You look at her, trying to see if she was reading your thoughts. It doesn't seem like it. Probably a coincidence. "Are you saying one of my Pokemon can't or won't evolve?"

She shrugs. "It's a hypothetical question."

Even if you don't plan on answering her, you think about it. What's the honest truth?

The wind blows as you think about it.

"I might not use them as much," you say. "Not at first. I've been planning for all of them to evolve. If they don't though, I'll need to come up with a way to make it work." You turn to Clair, confident. "Definitely. We could make it work. I'll support them no matter what!" Your mind goes back to the orphanage, and the years of being passed by because you were a problem child. You were more difficult than the good kids. Nobody bothered to take you under their wing as you got older.

You'd never make your Pokemon feel that way. You can train them and prove that they're worthwhile too, even if they have to try a little harder or do things a little differently.

"Spoken like a true champ," Clair says. "Or a naive idiot."

You put your hands on your hips. "What's the difference?"

She lifts herself off the rock. "Whether you win or not."

You take out Destiny and Raistlin as Vlad flies by and squeaks. "Destiny, I want you to do laps with Vlad. Try to catch him." She takes off right away. "Catch him! Don't attack him!" Eh, she'll probably listen.

You've learned a lot about abilities. You know that with a huge amount of work, you can teach a Pokemon to learn a second one. It only works with some Pokemon and a lot of dedication though.

You also know that he's close to evolving. You might be able to get all the way if you push him with exercises.

Of course, he has a Hidden Power that you don't know the type of. It might be good to learn it.

You decide to focus on learning his Hidden Power type first. Depending on what it is, you can figure out what moves to teach him later.

"Raistlin! Hidden power on that rock!"

He executes the move with surgical precision and it hits the center of the rock. It didn't look very effective. You have him do it again against a small puddle. Again, not very effective. You run through the motions against various targets until you're certain. "Fire. It's fire."

That'll come in handy! You spent the rest of the time training his Special Attack. "Hidden Power, again!"

Clair looks annoyed. "I thought you already figured it out."

"I did, we're just doing excerises now." You look over over. Vance is willing to wrestle his Pokemon, maybe that attitude runs in the family. You toss Raistlin a small rock, which he suspends in the air. You toss another to Clair and she does the same thing on instinct. "Think you can beat him?"

She snorts. "With my arms tied behind my back."

Funny.

You toss them both a pebble. Then another. They suspend them in the air. You find some heavier rocks of roughly equal weight and toss those. Now they're struggling. You throw in two hefty branches for good measure.

Clair and Raistlin both struggle to keep their piles of rocks and sticks floating.

You're about to throw in some more when Clair gives out and her pile collapses. "Not fair. Too tired from before."

"Good job Raistlin!" You hold him tight. He's warm.

Clair rubs her temples as she recovers from exerting herself. "I want a rematch another time."

In the distance you hear Vance calling out that dinner is ready.

Dinner is fantastic! You really have to learn how he does this. Robin used the same ingredients and committed a war crime in a pot before.

Everyone chats over dinner. You learn that Jeanine and Vance are working on a way to mimic the pressure point thing the Braundalin gym had using his knowledge of martial arts and her aura reading. Robin got a lot of training in and feels accomplished.
