You were just about to introduce the two naga ambassadors to the king, but now you see that he's already granting an audience to Mannuqappu and his men from Zagros. With them is the only other scorpion-person left in the world of the living. You didn't think this day would come so soon. You're dumbstruck. He looks at you for just a moment, then shyly returns his gaze to the foot of the king's throne.

Everyone waits for the king to speak first. After some hesitation, he does so. "Hunzuu! You have guests Do they seek an audience as well? They may speak."

> Explain the naga, their business here, and their poor grasp of your language. Stay and listen to what follows.
> Introduce them and then find a polite time to excuse yourself. Possibly blush very blue.
> "We can wait our turn, your majesty. We didn't mean to interrupt."

I am conflicted. On the one hand, I'm happy to see the scorpion boy. On the other hand, I'm still too depressed about ninlil to be excited about it.

Let's get that rock-chisel made into a necklace so we'll always have it close until we find that lizardman.
>>
>>32126990
We did kind of get rather side tracked from our mission of revenge, didn't we?

Oh, and is Soul of Lightning around? He was meant to come back before us.

Well, we caught one of their groups, but it was the wrong group, and we were forced to bring the leader back for interrogation by good strategic sense.

Lizardman is still out there.
We still want to find him.

You skitter toward the king, intentionally keeping your back to Jaya so she doesn't see you blush. Jaya is altogether too interested in your love life. "Yes, sir, if now's a good time. This is Jaya and Kiresh. They're nagas, from far to the east. They don't speak the tongue of Ea very well yet, but they just want to explore this region peacefully and learn about whatever we can teach them. And, uh, don't mind the fireballs. Those follow them around wherever they go. Something to do with being a naga, I guess."

The king takes the good news with reserved happiness. He looks relieved that he's not being called to make a decision where he might mess up. "Welcome, Jaya and Kiresh! I am Appan-El, fourth of that noble name, king of Ligish and all its holdings."

Kiresh nods his head and tries to understand everything that's being said. Jaya is first to come forward. "Yes, hello, king of Ligish! We are will having peace. We are having been looking for cities in the grass and in the sand for too many days. We are would stay some days and know things."

The king nods and tries not to laugh. "Of course! Well, you are welcome here in the palace. Perhaps one of my advisors could start explaining things to you. Would that be acceptable?

Kiresh looks at Jaya. Jaya nods to Kiresh. "Yes!" says Kiresh proudly, even though he has no idea what he's saying yes to.

The graybeard and some guards escort Jaya and Kiresh toward the feast hall. The king returns his attention to Mannuqappu. "You should stay. This news from Zagros sounds very serious, and we have to determine exactly what to do about it."

Mannuqappu shakes the scorpion-boy's shoulder. "Hillallum! You can go eat. His Majesty just needed to see you, and it's clear that we'll make no agreement regarding you today."

You stay and listen to the meeting between Mannuqappu and the king. Nobody dismisses you, so your presence is expected, or at least welcome.

"Anyway," says the King, "We do not know for sure why all of these heroes disappeared from your ruling council. Perhaps they left willingly. If what you say about their prowess is true, then they would be hard to kidnap. But this may have to do with something that has come to my attention. There is a band of outlaws, mostly monsters, looking for beings whose souls house pieces of the ancient monster Pazuzu."

Mannuqappu scowls and tightens a fist. "I do not like what you are implying, your majesty! Every one of our heroes is blessed by great Marduk, and their virtue is not in question, least of all by the king of the city of traitors and thieves!"

The king falters. "I did not mean to... Look, do you want help or not? This is all the information I have.."

> Get mad at Manuqappu right back and defend your city's honor

Mannuqappu gets his temper under control and shakes his head at you. "No. Well, it would have. But we could come to no agreement. A betrothal between you and Hillalum seems natural, but your master in the pyramid insists that you not leave Ligish. Sending the husband to live with the wife is perverse, and we refuse to let Ligish become a nest of scorpions! We want Zagros to be a nest of scorpions! We offer a full battalion of men-at-arms and a generous bride-price on top of that, but still he refuses."

> "Well, he's right. I protect Ligish. I will until my dying day."

You try not to blush. You don't know where the non-blushing muscle is. You're probably blushing bluer than polished lapis lazuli by now. You, betrothed? Even though it hasn't happened, the mere mention of it changes the way you think of yourself. "Has, uh, has anyone asked Hillallum how he feels about this?"

Mannuqappu shakes his head. "That is irrelevant. He will do his duty. He was reluctant to visit you the last time we came to Ligish, but he is reluctant to do much of anything. He is an odd child. He will fight and kill without question, but ask him to have dinner with a stranger and he runs to his room. If the betrothal does not happen, it will be no great loss, I assure you."

"Zagros asks for permission to search all the territory around Ligish, and troops to help us in this task. If they are still in Zagros, our remaining heroes will find them. If they are not, we will find them and bring them home."

The king nods. "I have to make sure that Ligish is not defenseless. Would three companies of charioteers suffice?"

Manuqappu frowns. "I was hoping for more. But if that is your decree, your majesty, then we will take what we are given."

> "How about one giant scorpion on top of that? I want those outlaws dead. They killed my friend."
> "Be nice, Mannuqappu. I want an alliance between our cities, but you are making it difficult."

>>32128258
That does seem to agree with what I've seen. In the underworld, the biggest and highest-ranking scorpions you've seen have been women. Though the men can't exactly be described as subservient, either. They're all proud and aggressive predators. Losing a fight is equally shameful regardless of the gender of the victor. It's just that the biggest ladies happen to win more fights than the men when they're challenged.

We could learn from you, and perhaps you in turn could learn from us.

"Not right away, though? I literally just got back. I could use a little rest first."

"Your Majesty, will two days be enough to prepare the charioteers?"

The king nods.

"Then let it be done. Ligish's stories may be stories of trickery, but let it be told that Ligish's king is just."

You look around for Hillallum. For all you know, he could be in the feast hall with the naga, so you check there first. You find only the two naga, still eagerly sampling a variety of luxurious Ligishi delicacies with the greybeard and some other king's men. Jaya waves to you with her mouth full of wine and stuffed dates and beckons you to come over, but you have other business to attend to.

You try to figure out where a shy scorpion might hide after getting something to eat. You try the balcony nearest the kitchens, as sure enough you find him there, looking out upon Ligish from a shady spot in the corner.

"Hillallum? Hi, it's me, Hunzuu. Well, what am I saying, you know who I am. I'm the only other..." You look down at your claws and eight legs. "Yeah..."

Hillallum nods. He's holding a roasted and glazed goat leg that he's nibbling on. You're over a head taller than him. He looks even younger than you did before you molted. "You're Hunzuu. They say you're a great warrior. You breached the walls at Turtak. You brought your city's fighting schools to heel."

Hillallum eats while he listens to you. He tries replying with his mouth full before realizing he ought to swallow. "Well... father says that a true hero doesn't kill for pleasure, only when there's good reason. But father also says that battle is where a man learns what he is. Father says a lot of things. I don't know. I used to know what I was, but now I guess I don't..."

It addition to just being shy, it sounds like he hasn't gotten over his post-transformation identity crisis. You remember feeling some of the same things. "I'll be right back. I'm getting something to eat. Don't go anywhere, okay?"

"I'm not going anywhere..." He looks out at a flock of birds in the sky.

After skittering to the royal kitchens and helping yourself to two raw goat legs, you bring them back, one in each claw. Their scent alone is tantalizing. It tickles your nose and coaxes out your feeding instincts just a tiny bit, just enough to be aware that it's happening.

You offer him one of the raw goat legs. Raw is my favorite. I save it for special occasions, though, because it makes our kind go a little crazy for a few moments. So don't be scared."

Hillallum blushes blue. He looks a little scared, and he clearly smells the raw meat in the air. "Do I... I don't want to go crazy, do I?"

"It's not permanent. And it's good that you know this about yourself. You don't want to get the feeding instinct in the middle of battle and not know what is is, right?"

"Well..." Hillallum reaches with one claw to take the raw goat leg you're extending to him. Your claws touch for a second. He's still blushing.

He takes a bite out of the goat leg, and the next moment he's tearing into it like a good flesh-eater, leaving the cooked leg half-eaten on the stone floor. You help yourself to the other raw goat leg. It makes you groan in pleasure. This is your kill. Yours! No pesky scavengers anywhere trying to steal it from you, just two children of Tiamat triumphantly enjoying a kill. Your heart is still pounding after you've scraped the flesh clean and sucked the marrow out of the bones.

"So, uh, you see? Don't do that in battle. It'll distract you, even make you forget your friends."

Hillallum is still catching his breath after finishing his raw goat leg. He looks at his slightly bloody hands. "I wasn't myself! It was like the nightmares I've been having! what did you to to me?! Marduk save me..."

"It does make you lose yourself for just a little while, but... I was also hoping you'd enjoy it. It makes me feel less weird to have someone to share that with."

Hillallum sheds a tear. "I let myself be changed. I was happy for the chance to be important. But if I'd known what it meant, I'd have run away. I thought I'd still be me inside..."

You've never seen the dead scorpions weep, but you know you've wept before. It might be a little fib, but it's a useful one. "I know for sure. I see them in my dreams. Do you?"

He nods and blushes again. "Sometimes. There was a whole swarm of them, and... Tiamat was there! Or an idol of her. It was horrible! I thought I was dead. I thought Marduk had struck me dead for having an evil form. I mostly have it under control now. I can make myself wake up when it happens. I'm sorry, Hunzuu. I shouldn't be falling apart like this. The idea of being betrothed is weird enough, but you can't stomach the idea of living under the rule of a husband - a husband who might even be as strong as you pretty soon! You need to set things straight. You lay a hand on Hillallum's shoulder and lean in toward him. Your head is tilted forward, but your eyes look right into his. You give his shoulder the slightest of squeezes. "No... you'll be mine."

Hillallum gulps and shivers. He's so blue he's practically glowing like the floor of the underworld. "Don't hurt me. I've done nothing wrong, lady Hunzuu, I'm just trying to-"

"I know. You're sharing your fears and worries. That's good. Being strong means making sure your wounds are properly treated. So if it hurts, don't hide it forever. Speaking of that, would you like to come see the pyramid? I need healing there."

"All right..." He smiles. Maybe he's just relieved that you don't plan on hurting him.

You explain to the king and Mannuqappu that Hillallum wants to meet the Great Priests, and you'll be escorting him. The king nods, "You are always welcome here, Hunzuu. I'll never forget all you've done for us." That's true, but he'll also never remember. Though he's making new memories now, those two years are forever lost to him.

Mannuqappu laughs and slaps his thigh. "Good! I would send guards with you, but you can guard yourself, can't you! just don't be seduced. Seduced away from great Marduk, I mean!" He grins. He knows what he said.

When you and Hillallum walk side-by-side across the broad streets and past the crowded market square, you're sure the common folk are drawing the obvious conclusion. People will say you're in love.

True to your word, you take Hillallum all the way up the long stairs on the western slope of the pyramid and straight into the Great Priests' solar, where all five men are eating and deliberating.

The Blood Priest stands. "Hello, Hunzuu. And no, you can't keep him. I don't care if he followed you home."

"Hey! N-no, it's not like that at all! He just wanted to meet all of you! There's a lot of religious differences between our city and his, and we should at least come to understand each other."

The Sand Priest sniggers to himself. "Ohoho, yes, indeed! We're the spiritual center of Ligish, aren't we? Commoner and king alike look up to our sterling example of moral behavior! Just look at the Gold Priest here. He didn't throw away his new whore even after she grew a defect."

The Gold Priest scowls at his colleague. "This is not the time for jokes. Hillallum, welcome. A lot of our service to the city is practical, in the form of spells, but it's true that we do attend to all the ancient rites and bring out the images of the gods for their feast days. We'd be happy to answer any questions you have."

Hillallum raises a finger as he thinks of a question. "So whores are legal here?"

"Any question that isn't about whores."

"Well then I'll answer! Yes, of course they're legal. Ishtar smiles on a city where the harlots prosper."

Hillallum nods and tries not to judge. "There are no whores in Zagros. The last one was hanged last year. Now our city is pure."

"That sounds dangerous. If Ishtar notices that, she might throw a tantrum and break open the... actually, never mind. It's not my right to tell your people what to do. Let's just talk and not pass judgment on each other."

You tell the story of how the harlot Shamhat saved old Uruk by laying with Enkidu for seven days straight and thereby making a civilized man of him. Then you tell an older fable of the first people, and how the first harlot was born when Ishtar first took notice of Aruru's people and taught one of them how to give sex and receive more than sex. All this talk of sex seems to make Hillallum nervous and fidgety, so you tell the story of Ishtar rescuing her husband Tammuz from the underworld, a somewhat romantic tale that proves that Ishtar can be noble sometimes.

In return, Hillallum tells the central myth of the Zagrosi people, Marduk's slaying of Tiamat. Mardul was the son of Ea, a god of the fourth generation who by all rights should have been a minor god or less, but he proved himself greater than all other gods by standing against Tiamat and all her host of monsters and slaying her single-handed. After that the Zagrosi say that all other gods surrendered the kingship to Marduk, but other cities are not in agreement about this at all. When the tales in Ligish speak of Marduk at all, they say his arrogance got the better of him and Enlil exiled him for presuming to command his elders.

"That's nice. I don't have any sisters..."

You find Nakurtum out on the terrace drilling with Dadanum. She's quite happy to see you. "Zuu! I heard you were back, but then they said you went to the palace with... giant snakes or something? You and your creepy-crawlies. Don't hug me, kiddo, I'm all sweaty."

"Hi, Nakurtum! Sorry I didn't come sooner. Those snakes were actually ambassadors who had to talk to the king. They're still there. This is Hillalum. I don't think you two have met."

"So this is the other one, eh? And you're showing him around, alone? Does that mean you two are..."

Hillallum tries to explain. "She says I'm going to be-"

You interrupt him. "We're going to be hunting that lizard bastard, together with some charioteers and men from his city. I thought you might like to show each other your moves!"

Nakurtum obliges. Dadanum is more than happy for the time to rest. He's sweaty and bruised and can barely speak. You watch them show off their techniques with training spears, then spar for a bit. Hillallum is very confident with every movement of his spear, and he even favors it as much as his claws. He fights like a foot soldier. You fight like a scorpion who was trained by an assassin.

Nakurtum lands a few touches against his claws and legs, but eventually Hillallum knocks her over, though he immediately helps her up with a claw.

"Not bad, kiddo! Some things I haven't seen before. I don't usually go for spears in a real fight, but I thought I knew everything you could do with a spear. Guess I was wrong."

Hillallum bows to Nakurtum and sets the training spear down. "You're very good as well, Nakurtum. You must have trained since you were very little."

"Not really. I'm a fast learner."

You take him past Rabi-Tammuz's workshop and into your room. "And this is my room. It looks a mess but I like burying myself in the straw mattresses. And this little guy in the cage is Mr. Clicks! He's a very good little boy."

You take Mr. Clicks out of his cage, and he happily climbs up your arm.

Hillallum looks on with wonder and amazement. "It's... ooohhhh! Do they like us? The real scorpions, I mean? I never bothered to check. We don't have many scorpions in Zagros."

"I can't speak for other scorpions, but Mr. Clicks is a very good boy indeed, and I know for a fact that he loves his mother very much. I checked."

Hillallum draws very close to you and reaches over with one finger to per the little black scorpion's back. Mr. Clicks shies away, but he doesn't sting. He's a good boy.

"I don't think he likes me."

"Maybe you just smell unfamiliar. You're covered in dirt and dust from all that sparring on the terrace. You know... I could get some water and a rag. We could clean you up a bit..."

All of Hillallum's gallons and gallons of blue blood must be collecting in his cheeks. "I guess Mannuqappu wouldn't like it if I came back to the palace like this. Will you... will you fetch some water?"

You fetch a couple of buckets of water, a basin, and several rags. As you go around collecting what you need, you decide that you shouldn't fear your new molting, just like you're trying to teach Hillallum not to fear his new body. You're old enough to be curious about boys now and then and not hate yourself for it. And this first day might set the tone for any days together that might follow, whether you end up marrying this boy or not. Time to try having a little fun.

"There you are! Thank you!" Hillallum had just been watching Mr. Clicks in his cage eating his locust. "I can take it from here. Hey... what are you doing?"

You start soaking the rags, one in each hand and one in each claw. "I'll help you. Get that tunic off."

"Eep!" Hillallum hesitates, but undresses. "Th-thank you?"

Time to see how boy scorpions work up close. You scrub his bare back, chest and arms, even taking a moment to wipe off his face, though it makes him flinch. Your claws prod around his scorpion half as they roll the wet rags around in circles across his dark carapace. What spots are sensitive on a scorpion? You're not completely sure. There are some spots you can't reach, and nobody dares help you when you have a bath or a dip in the river. You explore. You hear his fast, labored breaths and feel the air from his book lungs on your claws.

The claws, it turns out, are the most sensitive spots on a scorpion. It's funny. So often you use them to dig and crush and kill, but when you use them gently they seem to take on a different character entirely. You hold claws with him. He's wet and glistening all over. He struggles to speak. "I... I could have done it myself, you know."

"Nonsense. There are spots you can't reach..."

The maximum level of kiss I'd accept is a quick peck on the cheek followed by running away.

"Yeah... I guess there are..." He's achieved maximum blush. You're surprised he hasn't passed out.

Though he looks surprisingly lovely when wet, you take some dry rags and start drying him off. You tousle his chin-length hair, just because you can. "There. That looks quite presentable. I think we can even find you some new clothes to wear back, if you want."

"We'd better not. They'd know I was... you know... naked in here."

"Yeah, good thinking." You pass him back the slightly dusty tunic he had on before.

"Hunzuu?"

"Yes?"

"What was that? Like, what did we just do? Is that what older girls do when they... like you?"

> "I don't know. I was just doing what I felt like. Thank you for indulging me. You're a good sport."

We're only like two years older than him.
I'm secretly hoping he grows up to be like twice our size because he's the child of heroes and has good breeding and much less childhood starvation than us
>>
"Now that I have seen you, you should see me."
[x]Undress, start washing self.
I mean, we just got back from the journey not long ago, why not take advantage of the situation and clean ourselves up too? He needs to appreciate the other gender's scorpionbits too, it's good for his health.

Being an Onee-sama doesn't come from being very much older. Being an Onee-sama only requires that you are older and that you have the attitude.

You pat him on the heat, then brush his tousled hair back behind his ears. "I was just inspecting you, to see if you're worthy of being mine one day. Don't worry, you are."

"Oh... that's good! I think." He still looks nervous, but also grateful, maybe even a little proud. "I guess we'd better get back. Thank you for showing me your home, Hunzuu. You're a good host. That's important to my people. And you're strong. And not just hitting-people strong. I mean you know what you want. It... I still don't know how I feel about all this, but you make me want to figure out what it is I want. So thank you."

"I'll clean myself up now. It'll be two days before we move out, so I'll see you again soon. Goodbye, Hillallum."

"Goodbye!"

You give him a clawhug, and for the first time outside of the underworld you receive a clawhug in return! Then he leaves you alone with Mr. Clicks and a bunch of strange new feelings swimming in your head. Soul-of-Lightning once told you that the one advantage humans have in this world over centaurs is that humans can rub themselves when they're horny and stay out of trouble. You can't do that - you're not even entirely sure what would need rubbing. So you twiddle your claws, wash yourself with cold water, and talk to Mr. Clicks about your troubles. "Oh, Mr. Clicks, things used to be simpler. A monster would show up and I'd kill it. Now the monsters hide, and there's... boys. I dunno, I thought I liked the big strong types like the king's father, but Hillallum is all right, too. But then, I guess he's technically a lot stronger than the king's father ever was. If I want someone bigger than me, I'm in trouble, huh? Maybe Humbaba would be interested. That was a joke. But yeah, smaller is nice, too..."

Mr. Clicks listens attentively. You're pretty sure he doesn't understand your words and just hears it all as "WAH WAH WAH WAH," but it's the thought that counts. He's a very good boy.

Boys and hiding monsters are tricky.
I do personally like the idea of getting married and moving in with him later, though. If our city ever stops needing babysitting.

>>

We did not. The people we've used it on are Nakurtum (who loves us,) Mr. Clicks (who loves the giant wah-wah monster who feeds and pets him,) Soul-of-Lightning (who loves some dead human girl from before the flood,) and Jaya the naga (who loves being a naga, apparently, or maybe has a crush on the blood magician who transformed her.)
>>
>>32133128
Well, gold priest probably loves one of his whores the most. Or some object.

We never did get to ask the sand priest what he/she was up to, causing trouble and the like.
>>
>>32132917

The obvious answer is to start a nest of scorpions equidistant between the two cities.
>>
>>32133662

>>
>>32133801
Yeah, we have.
This diplomatic snafu about who lives with who could be solved with an undercity.
