"Bearbreath, turn into an eagle and scout around!" You point at him, commandingly using a stern voice. He calmly points at the ceiling. Oh right, cave. "I mean, turn into a bat! And scout!" He puts a finger on his chin and rubs it thoughtfully.

"Never tried that before. Honestly, I haven't studied one. Don't know how, yet. Got one handy?" You don't.

Shrugging, "Alright, then. Guess we'll just have to do this normally. Brokagh and Fetid, scout ahead. Me, Bear, and his kitty will stay back with Sitri and lazy Allonces. Now let's all get a move on!" You have a hard time talking that long with your gruff leader voice, and you have to cough a bit at the end there.

It's all clear in the caverns for a while, but you get a strange feeling that you're being followed.

Occassionally Brokagh or Fetid will double back and give you a report. All clear. Where the heck are you? Sea Mom's navigational systems could use some work. Brokagh's best guess is you're in some offshoot of the underground kingdom, but he hasn't figured out where yet. He doesn't recognize any of the fungus or wildlife so far. And that itchy feeling on the back of your neck refuses to go away.

Any time you try to see what's behind you, there doesn't seem to be anything there. If you don't get some action or SOMETHING soon, you're going to go crazy.

You hope no one else saw tha- oh Bearbreath definitely did. After you get done regaining your dignity, Sitri gives you a shrug and a halfhearted, "I'll try my best, I guess," Before walking off. Go get 'em, girl!

Some time passes while you nervously chew your fingernails. Soon you hear laughter, "So I'd like you to meet my traveling companions..."

Sitri rounds the corner of the cave system, with a weird purple looking girl clinging to her arm. The stranger has two swords in the sash of a rather loose robe. And she's laughing at some joke Sitri murmured to her. What a smooth talker!

Wait, swords? You quickly remove the parchment about swordspeople from your pouch, noting your location: 'Underwater Cave System' And scan to see if anyone else has it listed. Before too long you see the ninety second best swordsman on the list with it. Name, Kurohana.

She's looking around your camp with a smile on her face till she sees you holding the paper. Suddenly her entire stance changes, pushing Sitri away, and pulling free both her swords. One is much longer than the other.

"Wh-what?! You lured me into a trap! I never would have thought someone as charming as you would be..." She seems honestly offended! Maybe she's secretly a pretty pure girl?

Best of first 3d20 with critfails is a horrible system. The most likely outcome is a 1, at 14.26%. The second most likely outcome is a 20, at 12.23%. This leads to incredibly swingy games, where the MC almost always succeeds except for when they massively fail.

It's not a good one I agree. I spend a lot of time thinking over other systems to use in quests. It's an interesting puzzle trying to find something that provides interactivity and chance while not simultaneously robbing a quest of all momentum.

Aggh! You've heard enough. She's clearly not in the mood to be reasoned with, and you do kinda wanna practice sword fighting with someone else. Besides, she's ranked higher than you and sitting at the bottom of the list bothers you more than you'd like to admit.

You get your sword ready and make a move at her, charging with it upraised. "Huh?" Allonces says, sitting up with a yawn, grabbing her spear and lifting it up the second you're passing over it. You go spiraling down into a heap and slide towards the swordswoman.

Your opponent wastes no time dashing over to where you're prone and grabbing you by the neck, picking you up and putting a blade to your throat in a moment. She holds you hostage there, glancing about the room, daring your minions to make a move. Allonces stands up oblivious to the situation. When she finally finds out what's happening she blinks a few times, "Should I just go back to bed, or...?"

"Hey, calm down. Shax was just worried someone was following her, alright?" Sitri says in a soothing voice, "And even when you showed up she was only interested in a proper duel, right? So there is no reason to start taking hostages, is there?" You feel the grip on your slacken. After a little more lee way you break free, grabbing your sword that's laying on the ground and get into a proper stance. You hear the purple girl growl.

"You won't trick me with your pretty face again, she-goat." It seems like Sitri has really gotten on her bad side. It definitely isn't your fault, though! After a few moments, she charges at you before you can really get your guard up.

You don't want this to take too long. There is no telling who is gonna hear your fight. All this shouting, and clanging around. You've been a native of caverns long enough to know that this much noise attracts all kinds of predators. Gotta finish it up! She's got some pretty flimsy swords, too. Time to get offensive!

You charge in, this time with your sword lowered like a lance, and jab it at her, something she easily avoids with a floaty dodge. You cut your blade at a hard angle towards her, and she rolls away, out of your reach. using the momentum to carry you forward, you start wrenching your sword back, hoping she'd underestimate the amount of time it'd take for you to get your blade back around.

Falling for the bait, she charges in, ready to take a swipe at your midsection, when you blindside her with your sword, she holds one sword out in an attempt to block it, and quickly realizes the momentum behind your swing won't be stopped that easily as she catches the flat of your blade heavily. A loud smack is heard, and the purple girl lets out a surprised shriek as she goes sprawling onto the ground. Quickly, you bop her on the head with your sword to knock her out.

Seriously, your goblin senses are going crazy. Making this much noise? Underground? In a cave system? It'd be crazy to stay here. You tell everyone to get a move on. No one volunteers to take your new captive, so you order Sitri to do it.

"Uhhm, are you sure that's the best plan? Won't she totally freak out?" She will, but she would regardless with who is carryign her. That's your reasoning at least!

Fetid arrives just as you confirm with Brokagh that the way is clear, and after you calm her down about the situaion, you all head out. Before too long you break out of the maze of tunnels into a wider cavern system. Your prisoner starts to wake up.

"Wha- Unhand me! Don't allow this pervert to manhandle me in such a way!" She's practically shouting. Jeez, what a loud person.

"Hello again, I'm Shax. Anyway, I took you prisoner so could you tell me where we are?" She looks at you like you've lost your mind, "Please?" Her mouth works soundlessly for a few moments before she sniffs dismissively and closes her eyes. "Hmm, the silent treatment?"

You hear Sitri laugh. "I think I can make her talk, just give me some time alone with the young lady."

The swordswoman's eyes bolt open at that. "You wouldn't!"

"Oh, what wouldn't this manhandling pervert do?" Sitri replies. You can practically hear the grin on her voice.

"F-Fine, there is no reason to hide it! This is a neutral area of the Underground Realm, between the drow havens and the wild lands of the minor kingdoms. Aboleth roam near here, and their many allies." You don't know what those are, but you nod.

"So how do we get to the havens, and also what are you doing out here?"

She sniffs, "For the latter question: that's my business. For the former, you should encounter a guard post soon if you continue down this cave, hugging the right. Can I go now?"

Before too long you reach the guard post. It seems undermanned, and they arrange an escort for you back to the army staging camp. A few days pass, and you arrive back home at last.

The Gnolls were already from evil-aligned origins and the elf and satyr pretty much didn't care about doing the morally correct thing.

As I said before, Shax's convincing prowess comes down to "come on, it'll be fun." Which, while it worked on those guys because they didn't really care about doing the right thing, won't work at all on someone who legitimately believes in Good.

You and your merry band march straight to the mansion you remember Nevith residing in, and walk straight up to the young secretary. "Hello, I am Shax," You can barely look over the counter. "I am back from this thing the dragon lady sent me to do, can I talk to her?"

He glances up, with a disinterested look. Suddnely, his face brightens as he recognizes you, "Oh, you're Allonces' friend, right? I'll let notify her malevolence right away." 'Allonces' friend?' You don't like the sound of that one bit. Not one bit.

Remembering the wait last time, you get yourself comfortable. Fetid sits the doll down on a seat next to her, and everyone else settles down as well. "So, Shax, she said we could have some treasure from her vault. Do you have anything in mind you'd like?" Sitri brings up the reward while Allonces chats up the receptionist some more.

You shrug, "I dunno really. I got my own vault now. And a smith. I should let you visit some time! I got a big old library, too."

"Ooh, I'd like that. Let me know next time you head over to this elemental plane. I'm half convinced it doesn't exist, you know?" She elbows you.

"Whaaat, you've seen me shoot a giant crystal spear and summon turtles." Sitri just laughs. The door opens up. Guess you won't be waiting forever like last time.

"Shaaaax~ I hear you've got something for me?" A familiar voice booms out. As your part y stands up, you motion for Fetid to let you carry the doll, and carry it under your arm, its limbs dragging on the floor, as you walk into her room.
