So this just happened
>playing Rogue Trader
>Being Rogue Trader
>ship takes off for standard Warp jump to unexplored world in the Expanse
>2 week flight
>2nd day into trip
>Astopath says something isn't right
>Suddenly ship starts shaking and lights flicker
>hail Navigator Tower
>Says we hit some sort of eddie but we're all good
>6 hours later
>Drop out of Warp
>Land really close to bare planet, basically in orbit
>Debris every where, enough for 1000000 ships
>Scan field
>Names for ships that aren't in database
>Tau Ships
>Elder Ships
>Scan planet
>Barren, dead world, but had signs of life once
>Techpriest running scans to figure out where we are and what time it is
>Can't find anything
>Starts looking at stars
>Still can't figure it out
>Adjusts for more possibilities
>Astropath scans the Warp
>Warp is dead calm
>Impossibly calm
>Ask Navigator
>He agrees, says this is impossible
>He tries to find the Astronomicon
>Can't find it
>Order him to keep trying
>Next day
>Techpriest kicks in my room door
>Tells me he figured it out but it's impossible
>We're at Macragge
>Rush to bridge
>Navigator still hasn't found it
>Planets match Macragge but all are Barren
>Suddenly computer beeps
>Techpriest starts screaming in binary
>Turns to me
>"According to the cycle of the star and our location in the galaxy, it's the year M55.431
>Everyone goes quiet
>Astropath takes out his Tarot Cards
>Draws a card
>Death
>Shuffles and draws again
>Death
>Keeps doing it
>Every time he gets it
>>
So is this going to be a "Zerg won" thing, or what?
>>
>Crew goes dead quiet
>Order double check
>Techpriest assures that 12 independent tests verify the year
>Everyone begins to panic a bit
>Order everyone to remain calm
>Helmsman tells me something has power on the planet
>Order everyone to suit up

Next session we're exploring that planet to figure out if we're right

What happened /tg/?
>>
>>32111027
Warp time travel fuckery. It's happened before,
>>
You should probably just set a course immediately for Terra, if humanity exists there's a high chance they'll be there.
>>
>>32111027
It won't matter, you'll just electric boogaloo your way backwards through the warp in the end.
>>
Someone didn't say their prayers before bedtime
>>
>>32111050
>>32111023
>>32111052
>>32111054
But why were there Tau ships and Eldar ships?

They'd look like they'd been there for thousands of years. And the Techpriest verified that the hulls of the Imperial ships had be in the solar winds for the timeframe he put down.

What happened and why the is the Astronomicon gone out?
>>
The Emperor woke up, and he was displeased.

>Like a hurricane, a tsunami, or a Godzilla...
>>
Rogue Trader: Voyager, here we come.
>>
YOU ARE A ROGUE TRADER DAMNIT! DO WHAT YOU WERE MEANT TO DO! FUCK BITCHES MAKE MONEY!
>>
The nids arrived in full force and ate everything.

Your ship contains the last of humanity.

>considering the average crew of a RT vessel you can probably restart the species with a stable breeding population if you find a hospitable planet.
>>
>>32111118
Change course, head to Terra. You need to see if Emps is still tickin. As for the debris, there was likely a large battle for macragge
>>
>>32111118
Easy answer is the Tyranids won. All signs line up.

They ripped the planets and took all the biomass. They made it to the astronomicon and nommed it.

That would be my first and only guess. All the races got together and tried to fight them, for once, and still failed. Because 40k is a silly setting that isn't prepared to jump that far forward.
>>
I forgot to mention
>Techpriest starts looking for celestial phenomenon
>Everything different
>Eye of Terror is gone
>All the warp storms are gone
>No radio signals or anything
>Should still get some from just background noise
>Dead quiet

It's just empty and dead now.
>>
>>32111152
But anon, there are no more money or bitches
>>
>>32111157
>>considering the average crew of a RT vessel you can probably restart the species with a stable breeding population if you find a hospitable planet.

If you guys are right and the Nids won, where would there be a hospitable planet?
>>
>warp is completely calm
>enter warp
>go back in time
>arrive exactly on time
>>
>>32111209
Then actually make money. And then use said money to fund machines to make bitches!
>>
>>32111225
It was an eddie in the warp that caused it.

How can you go back in time if there is no eddie?
>>
>>32111203
you are still in the warp , possibly it's some (really strong) daemon fucking with you.

Fourteen. Thousand. Years.

For 14,000 years, Commissar Fuklaw waited. Waited past the death of his Emperor. Waited through the horrors of the warpspawn. Waited while the Great Devourer scourged the galaxy.

Because he knew. He knew that one day, a single ship would survive. Those last few remnants of humanity, numbering only a few thousand. Those last few humans, shivering in the dark, alone in the void long past the loss of their Emperor.

And Fuklaw knew that there would be one who would doubt. One last heretic at the end of all time. And for 14,000, he waited.

Ready.

Raging.

Angry.

Don't go back, OP. Maybe this universe is a more peaceful universe. A dead universe, filled with nothing but the husks of the old world. No great good, but no great evils, either. A place to start over.

Focus on finding something to clone yourselves, or develop some new life. Find a world that isn't blasted. Start anew.

The Age of Grimdarkness is over. Now all that's left is to try and build something new.

Sounds exciting!
>>
>>32112327
So I know next to nothing about 40k lore except for what I've read on /tg/... Is everything that happens supposed to take place in the year 40,000? Or does it take place over a series of years, it's just like saying "all that shit happened in the 2000's," meaning like a decade (or in this case a century possibly). If so, what year is the lore at currently?
>>
>>32112387

The Horus Heresy happened in 30k, and everything else happens over the next 10k years up to M41.

A few novels mention things in M42, but we don't REALLY know what happens past like 9999.999999999999 M41.
>>
>>32112387

Its a mix of events from before and after 40,000

Currently, if you scrounge every book and every fluff bit, you'll see that 40k has advanced to at least 42k
>>
>>32112455
I think Dark Heresy is in the middle of 39k, though.
>>
>>32110981
You really shouldn't be able to properly recognize Tau ships after a few thousand years.
>>
>>32112528
Not if the war happened relatively recently.
>>
>>32111203
Assuming that >>32111254 isn't right, you're in a dead galaxy.

The warp is just a reflection of emotion and it'd explain the Astropath's death cards. The astronomicon being dead means Emps and his jolly band of ten thousand psykers a day isn't there, the warp is calm because there are no emotions to stir things up and daemons or the gods can't rile it up if they have nothing to feed on, so they disappear.

The only people who'd be left are Necrons or Dark Eldar probably.
>>
>>32112528
Why would a Tau ship not be recognized?
>>
>>32112623
Because they develop inordinately quickly compared to other races. Theoretically, they'd be miles ahead of what they are currently if they would be allowed enough time.

That said, >>32112608 justifies it if the battle took places reasonably close to the usual 40k timeline.
>>
>>32112623
It's like identifying a Modern Aircraft carrier from the United States, if you are from a pre-American Revolution era. Kinda hard to identify something when it's so far in advance of you.
>>
>>32112656
There's also still standard issue equipment and a technological development limit.

Eventually progress slows down since you've got limits on what you can do like with humanity pre-DAoT.

>>32112665
Sure, except an Imperial ship is more advanced than a Tau one.
>>
>>32112705
>implying that matters
You still aren't staring at a configuration that you recognize. Also, for all their 'being more advanced' they sure did get the shit kicked out of them by the Tau a lot. Especially considering the early Tau vessels were not amazingly heavily armed.
>>
>>32112249
Oh shit, this is actually a great idea for the finale of a campaig. Go to find Trazyn and try to get him to give up some of his stash so you can rebuild mankind (and elfkind if you want to).

>>32112327

>In The Utter Darkness of the 56th Millennium, There is nothing.

Stolen
>>
>>32112623
I don't know if he's implying that the wrecks won't last long, or that Tau tech is advancing fast enough that their ships in a thousand years will look nothing like their ships now.
>>
>>32112736
>Also, for all their 'being more advanced' they sure did get the shit kicked out of them by the Tau a lot

Except they didn't. Damscles Crusade was an Imperial victory by a land slide. Hell even the Tau books state that. The Tau realized that if humanity wanted to fuck them over, it'd not be hard.

>>32112736
>You still aren't staring at a configuration that you recognize
All technology a race uses is based on certain designs. Everything Eldar has runes and spirit stones. All Necron stuff glows green and is made of Necrodermis. All Tau shit looks advanced but barely works safely. All Imperial stuff is mass produced and has brain parts for circuits. Ork stuff is just broken shit that works. Dark Eldar shit is black and stabby. Chaos shit is angry/trying to rape you/ trying to kill you/trying to infect you and stabby.

Once you know what their stuff looks like it's not hard to figure out.
>>
>>32112656
Tau use STL, or at least some tau do or did.

By the time tau ascend to using bizarre quantum-dimensional sentient holo-riptides made of nothing but nanites and pure energy and save the galaxy or crushingly fail and get destroyed, you will still have unknown legions of STL tau troop transports bringing 'modern' tau to their destination, towards worlds long since consumed by chaos or devoured by the nids.
>>
>>32111368
Lol how fucking disapointing would it be if that turned out to be the basic story behind every precursor race ever. You make it to the home of your "gods" and they tell you "yeah actully we made you by mistake when we were messing around with a science experimet. we didn't have a clue what to do so just let you get on with it really. No, no there wasn't any plan..."
>>
>>32111168
Wouldn't the time it takes to travel from Macragge to Terra without Warp travel take millenia?
>>
>>32112798
>lost more and more ships in every encounter in space
>on the ground they met no victory whatsoever
Yeah, okay.

And the designs won't ever change? Ever? Even after 10,000 years, the Tau Empire, the faction most known for advancing their tech, changing their designs, and doing whatever it takes (technically speaking) to win, isn't going to change their patterns?
>>

>>
>>32110981
Guessing Tyranids main force arrived, started nomming. Shadow In The Warp clamped down on EVERYTHING warp-related, beyond the wildest dreams of the Necrons. Warp flattened out, daemons dissolved, even the Chaos Gods ceased to be. There are gates into the webway that anyone can use. All the DE got nommed. Tau are biomass, nom. Orks, biomass, nom. Necrons may have retreated into Tomb Worlds again, if they were smart they'll have sent automated seedships out to do some geoforming while they sleep.

depends if you like orks or not as a whole. and if you truly think you have the right to decide whether or not to wipe out an entire race.

with that one ork, an entire galaxy could be repopulated because they reproduce from spores that fall from their bodies. you could raise an empire of orks using all the wreckage, because with orks "stuf jus werks"

or alternatively, that ork would become a god among his offspring and become the first ever warboss god, and he may or may not kill you and become the next rouge trader.

WHY ISN'T IT A PICTURE OF A QUARTER TWO DIMES AND A NIGGER PRESIDENT
>>
>>32113465
Forgot my pick
>>
>>32113477
Because the imagery of the card is supposed to convey great magnitude and the rebirth of life after death as a metaphor for change of transition into a new state.

Death standing over a dying king is supposed to convey the magnitude, while the white rose on his flag and the confused child beside him is supposed to represent a new beginning.

Death was probably chosen for the king imagery alone.
>>
>>32111359
I imagine it also symbolizes death, as in "everything is dead"
>>
>>32112705
Tau design sensibilities shouldn't change that much.

>Sir, those are definitely Tau ships but not any configuration I've ever seen.
>>
>>32113571
In the emperor's tarot, death means death. The squat means death. The hulk means death. The despoiler means death.
>>
>>32113571
And... guess what? Death is a change.

Everyone else being dead is also potential for great rebirth.
>>
>>32111359
No fucking shit it does you sperg, the entire universe has changed, everything about it is different, the eye of terror is GONE the warp is STILL and the astronimicon is MISSING.
>>
>>32113697
man /tg/ seems to hate admitting it's wrong.

just use the tower if you're that bent on having a major arcana. it also represents great change, but at least its connotation involves disaster, calamity, great ruin, and actual death.
>>
>>32113809
Keep in mind that different decks can and will have different art and thus different ways of vaguely interpreting what they mean. There is no "true" deck or interpretation of the cards. OP's Emperor's Tarot may very well illustrate 'Death' with the emperor's power-fisted hand exploding out of Horus' chest.
>>
>>32113809

>man /tg/ seems to hate admitting it's wrong.

Man /tg/ seems to hate acknowledging there is more than one person in a thread.

There's finally the chance for a happy, peaceful ending to the 40k saga (well, 56k saga). That's a pretty big change and new beginning.

>disaster, calamity, great ruin, and actual death.

The GREATEST ENEMY is no more, and probably tyranids are long gone as well.
>>
>>32113871

>There's finally the chance for a happy, peaceful ending to the 40k saga (well, 56k saga). That's a pretty big change and new beginning.

What thread have you been reading? Everyone wants OP to kill the Xenos and the Techpriest and to create new life in the universe for plundering purposes.
>>
>>32113809
If you're reading the cards in certain interpretations, an inverted death card is actual death, straight-up (or down, as the case would be). Upright Death is change, and yes sperg, change can mean from living to dead or vis-versa, though such an interpretation is often avoided because of the stigma of the card.

Then again, the tower can be death. The king of swords can be death if inverted. The wheel of fortune can be death. The hanged man can be death. The point of tarot is near anything can mean anything.

> Navigating the Warp without the Astronomican
Doesn't work, bruv.
Their best option is to grab an eldar ship and Tech Heresy their engines in.
>>
>>32113933
Also doesn't the warp not work for FTL when it's calm?
>>
>>32111203
Definitely Nids...
Wonder if there are still Nercrons out there?
>>
>>32113982
You can go in, but you can only come out where you want because you're guided by the Light of the Astronomican.

So basically, yeah. It'll work wonders. But you'll have no fucking idea where you'll end up.
>>
>>32113997

It's possible to navigate without the light of the Astronomicon. You just take preposterously absurd penalties. Just depends on how good your Navigator is and what bonuses the ship/charts are rocking.
>>
>>32114039
Oh, yeah. FFG revisionist crunch/fluff. Disregard my previous comments.
>>
>>32114039

The Tau seem to handle it just fine, even if they have to take shorter trips than everyone else.

Actually, I believe that Warp is only dangerous and inaccurate because it's so turbulent/demon-infested; if it's totally calm, you won't even need a Navigator.
>>
>>32114105
That is pretty theoretical. Depends on the GM's headcanon.

>>32114103
Addendum: They make short jumps and such, but they are excruciatingly slow, so they wouldn't be able to get all the way across the Imperium with that sorta tech/method. Eldar is the way to go.

The Tau do have access to human, presumably one of them knew, or maybe they'd already sent it before everything started, after they figured out the humans use something similar, and they just lucked into a major incursion.

a more accurate analogue would be attempting to use a sailboat if the wind and waves stopped occuring

I was under the impression the warp only flipped causality the bird if it was turbulent. With it calm it's no longer possible to use it for FTL.

Well its obvious OP

You are the last humans and eldar in the galaxy, so possibly in existence.

Time to start 'ahem' repopulating. Breed the eldar into the human gene pool, distribute genetics to where it gets so diluted you will only ever get slightly longer lived humans.

Keep the Orks contained to 20 or so orks, kill them if they gain any weaponry whatsoever but remember to keep them alive in case you need to jury rig something in a hurry, or use their resource squigs.

Loot all remaining technology from ships and dead planets because the nids couldn't have eaten all of it by accident.

Since the warp is gone now you can actually rebuild scientific progress without fear of corruption.

Oh and yeah you are going to have to terraform a planet at some point. Good luck, it shouldn't be too hard with whats left over of the galactic tech scale.

By the way, you don't have to breed the old fashioned way, you can stop by cammorgah and get their breeding vats.
>>
>>32111027
Warp time fuckery either shot you ahead or into an alternate timeline where most likey tyranids won or perhaps the eldar god of death finally woke up? It had to be something significant if the eldar would have thrown that much force at it, and for the tau to be so far into imperial space. Maccarage isn't to far from the tau comparatively if I remember right, but we are still talking about a massive tau fleet imbedded deep in imperial space. I would check the damage on the Xenos ships. Try and identify if they are destroyed by imperial weaponry or some other Xenos tech. If its the former the nids might not actually be involved. Nid ships are alive if I remember right so destroyed "vessels" would probably have been harvested for biomass which might explain why there are no signs of tyranid vessels, but their weapons should still leave some kind of trace on the imperial and Xenos ships they destroyed. Identifying exactly what destroyed those ships could go a long way in helping you start piecing things together.
>>
>>32114684
Calm warp was easier to navigate and use.
>>
>>32111242
Well obviously the only solution is to somehow rebirth one of the chaos gods in order to cause the warp to have enough chaos in it to send you back in time again.
>>
>>32114710
Pretty much this, also might have to watch for any other ships that might have gotten tossed out around this time.

Only threats out there might be a few Ork Roks that got lost.

Warp travel works by emotional tides throwing things around, even the "calm" areas that (were) easy to navigate had a current to them, it was just uniform and not prone to drastic unforseeable change

in OPs situation, the Entire Galaxy has been BECALMED

the only possible way to travel in that case is if being in the warp dislocates you from gravitational effects of the material universe, which means the moment they drop back in, the whole fucking galaxy zips on its vector without them

even worse, they're the last sentients left, the Dark Eldar is fucking radiating the last vestiges of Slaanesh's perversity, the faithful humans are the only things providing the last of the Starchild's gestalt purity and all other emotions are basically creating the ruinous powers all over again but with mostly human influences and a bit of Incubi depravity, but eldar feels a thousand times more powerfully than humans so it's likely that newSlaanesh and the eldar aspects of the other ruinous powers form a significant portion of these new daemons birthing in the warp around this lone ship
>>
Why has no one suggested investigating the gigantic graveyard of ships for clues?
>>
>>32115664
I thought it was just that the warp largly only mirrors life, so the actual distance to planets in warpspace are significantly shorter. It would probably mean the same thing in terms of how useful warp travel would be in this case though.

I doubt the rogue trader's crew would really be big enough to really awaken anything too horrible outside of a conveniently located plot beast however

>the only possible way to travel in that case is if being in the warp dislocates you from gravitational effects of the material universe, which means the moment they drop back in, the whole fucking galaxy zips on its vector without them

This sort of thing actually nearly happened to a group I'm in. Dark Heresy, using Rogue Trader rules for travel. When we tried to escape from a Dark Eldar ship, the ship's Navigator rolled so fucking terribly that we nearly Hendersoned the entire game. We would have dropped out of the Warp in a different sector years in the future, branded as radicals for having gone missing for so long. The entire group burned fate to avoid it and get back on track..

The Shadow in the Warp passing over the entire galaxy at the strength created by literally 'all' the nids combined with the extinction of all life would have similar calming effects on the Warp.
