After gathering some supplies, Morgan and her vic- new comrade, Inigo, set off to investigate an abandoned town.

Turns out that it's likely some sort of mage has turned the inhabitants into monsters- or, rather, Risen. Other Risen, with

Seeing as the most likely place for this villain to be operating is the fort nearby, the two set off to destroy whatever may be inside...

>Morgan

Through the door on the other side of the makeshift temple, you can hear moaning. Of the dead sort.

Probably... Three to six Risen in there.

A glance at Inigo shows him to be considering the situation, as well...

We gotta do something tactical.

Maybe we should use this opportunity to learn more about how they work.
If they have great sight, if they operate on smell, if they can hear really well. We should totally capture one to do some investigating.

How about we slip Inigos sword under the door and use it as a reflecting mirror to check how many Risen are in there.
I'm sure it's shiny and pristine because Inigo is a big puss who doesn't actually use it much
>>
>Talk to Inigo
>Let them come

"So..." You whisper, stepping a bit back from the door. "What can you tell me about these things?"

Inigo pauses, glancing at you.

"I thought you'd... Never mind." He starts, shaking his head. "They're mindless, and move towards the closest living human, to try and maul them. Or, at least, the closest one who they're not ordered to leave alone."

"If you do get hit, get the wound clean, quickly. If you don't, and you die later from it, well..." His tone goes grim. "Risen don't see enemies. They see recruits."

You nod at that. So, some form of magical disease... Interesting, but nothing to worry about at the moment.

As you look around the room, you take note of resources.

Brazier. Torches. Banners and tapestries. Supporting ropes. A few heavy things you could use.

"Oh, and if they're under someone's control... Well, they're more organized. More accurate." Inigo lets out a sigh at that. "More of a threat to us, basically."

You crane your neck to look at him, as he's rubbing his forehead and looking at the door. These ropes are kinda hard to keep steady as you pull them down, but you somehow manage it.

"'k, then." You shrug, taking the largest of the banners off. "Anything about how they work? Smell, hearing, sight?"

"Yes. They seem to-" Inigo starts to turn around, and seems a bit surprised to see you preparing your plan. "...Do I even want to know, yet?"

"Just gonna use it to set a trap. Go get me a torch, and explain when you get back."

He returns shortly, and you manage to get the door mostly ready. Luckily, it opens in, towards the monsters...

"So. You're going to kick in the door, lure them towards us, and get back in the room. I'll then set the tapestry on fire, and we beat them up."

"...That works, I suppose." Inigo shakes his head. "Let's get to it, then."

He ducks under the cloth, kicking the door heavily, and knocking it off its hinges, from the sound of it.

"INTRUDER!" You hear a man yell from inside, probably the other side of the room. "GET HIM!"

So, whoever was behind the disappearances is here now, then?

There' s a number of moans and groans, and you hear something like a bolt of magic impact on the wall, as you hear Inigo move quickly.

>Get in there and help!

...Well, plans change. If they're commanded, they won't fall for it after the first one, will they?

You set aside the torch, and duck around the cloth barrier.

...To your right, you see a pair of Risen, lurching forwards at their slow pace. To the left, three more.

In front of you, you see a man, holding a purple-covered tome, in front of a narrow window, sneering at you and Inigo. You hear the sound of someone rushing on stone steps to his left- stairs?

Inigo's standing next to you, in a guarding stance.

...The scene pauses for a moment.

"A... A priestess? Here?" The man says, shaking his head, and gesturing with his off hand. "Stand down."

...The Risen stop moving. Does he think you're...?

"Madame, I must sincerely apologize for the assault on your, ah, companion." He says nervously, lowering his book. He DOES think you're one of his bosses, then!

Inigo glances around the room nervously, shooting at least one back at you. He seems to be waiting to follow your lead

You cackle as evilly as you can, holding your hand to your mouth.

"Well, since you seem to be so simpering and pathetic, I suppose I can forgive you for your INSOLENCE!" You say, pointing at him. He seems to relax slighty.

"IF... " You pause dramatically, watching as he tenses. "You give me some of your backup tomes!"

...You can hear Inigo mentally facefault, but the mage across from you nods rapidly, bowing.

"Of course, m'Lady." He says. Whoever he has you mistaken for must be terrifying...

He snaps his fingers, sending a Risen lurching towards a door.

"If I may be so bold... Might I ask the reason for your visit? Our last communication with a priest said that we were to maintain the status quo, and the Risen and..." He glances at Inigo briefly, shaking his head. "Other materials were suitably delivered."

You shoot him a glare, and he withers.

"You dare to ask? We are... A surprise inspection!" You say, pointing at him dramatically, again. "Here to ensure that you're keeping this operation moving smoothly, and the resources flowing!"
He nods rapidly.

"Of course, m'Lady. Ardiel! Prepare a room! The Priestess wishes to conduct an inspection!" He turns, yelling up the stairs.

He's hooked alright.

"Where would you like to examine first, my Lady?" He pauses, looking around nervously. "The laboratories? The storage room? The cells with what few prisoners we have left?"

...The Risen returns, holding a trio of tomes, that the mage takes, and hurries to hold out to you.

"To the cells!" You say, cackling again. "I wish to see how the collection is coming along."

He nods, and starts leading you and Inigo towards a set of stairs leading down.

...As you descend, Inigo nudges you.

"That, uh... Is a good act." He whispers, glancing back up. "Do we take him out when we get down to the bottom?"

You shrug.

"He's got at least one more person here, and the prisoners are probably still alive." You whisper back. "Better to see what else we're dealing with first."

Inigo nods, and the mage ahead of you opens a door.

"Please, please. Come in." He says, bowing and signaling you should enter.

Stepping in, it's a fairly grim sight.

Dirt covers the walls, while dim torches illuminate the small prison. Behind iron bars, you can see roughly a dozen, scrawny, children. They look to vary in age, some no-older than 5, to a few who look roughly 10.

From the corner of your eye, you can see Inigo grip his sword as his expression changes to one of anger.

"As you can see, the 'Child Hunt' Overseer Ardri ordered is going well." The Grimleal says with pride. "Their parents put up some resistance, but, as you can tell, they should be ready to send out within the ne-"

"DASTARD!" Inigo yells, and you manage to sidestep the sweeping slash with the second you have to spare.

The mage's right arm goes flying off, and you can see his expression change to one of shock as he screams in pain.

The kids seem surprised, and huddle towards the back of their cells, obviously scared.

You rush forwards, swinging your axe as hard as you can at the mage.

He crumples as you feel it hit bone. There's a wet 'thud' as the body hits the ground.

Inigo looks around, panting, as you go back to the door. Nothing yet...

"I'll check for the keys to the cells." He says, after a second, shaking his head and looking for pockets on the body. "Sorry I reacted like that. I know we were going to gather information but..."

"He just set you off, right?" You ask back, nodding. "I... Almost did that, myself. Possibly would have, if you hadn't."

Inigo lets out a sigh of relief, holding up a ring of blood covered keys.

"That's something, at least. You aren't nearly as heartless as you acted..." He seems to be looking around, at the cells, then the stairs up.

...He's probably wondering what to do about this mess. There are still Risen up there, after all...

I'll try. I'll be up at 4.
Also, go finish off the risen, but let the kids out first. Just tell them to keep the door closed
>>
>>32076449
Tell the children to keep quiet, and hopefully they'll get out of this safely. Have them lock the door as you leave, and only open it with a special password of knocks. Don't make a sound even if you hear someone calling.

Have Inigo start taking out Risen while we hide. Wait for someone to come, and when they attack Inigo, walk in and complain about them attacking our subordinate. Make sure Inigo is rested, then walk past the guy, reading a tome, and let Inigo shank him in the back. When he turns around, Light+Fire. When the way to the main entrance is clear, have the kids hide near the front door, and torch the place.

Sure that sounds like a decent idea
>>
>>32077387
Why is inigo doing most everything. That's really dangerous and dumb.

Go find some explosives to set outside the holding room, then cut yourself a little, go find what's his name and cry out that your recruit turned rouge and killed him, and tried to kill you. Get him to gather his risen and march, when they're concentrated outside room inigo have him blow them up while we put a knife to controllerdudes throat.

Alternatively, if we can't find explosives coat the floor in some sort of flammable chemical and we can both lock our doors while they burn, after killing dude 2 of course
>>
>>32078327
You want Inigo to be bait for explosives and you're calling my plan dangerous?

I don't think we HAVE a knife. How do you plan on assassinating him before he can retaliate/call more forces?

Even if we find either of explosives or flammable chemicals, do you have a plan to get the children to safety? Choking on smoke or getting crushed by debris are ignoble ways to die.
>>
>>32078389

Sitting in a room waiting for a bunch of zombies is more dangerous trying to fight them all in melee combat? Don't be ridiculous. As for the knife, were in a fucking fort, it won't be hard to find one, he'll Inigo probably has some. And were not blowing up an entire room, were just blowing up a few risen.
>>
>>32078455
refresh my mind: how reliable are explosives in the time period of Awakening, and how common is it to find and have the knowledge to set?

As for the knife, I can only hope that goes well. A regular knife to the throat is dangerous, but relying on that for a critical plan without being trained in knife takedowns sounds off to me.

>melee combat
Inigo will mostly be softening them up and causing a ruckus, but it is true he'll be in some danger.
>>
>>32078522
Reliable enough, we don't know they aren't effective. and don't we can just burn them, it's a stone castle. and a knife to the throat isn't exactly rocket science
>>
>>32078601
>we don't know they aren't effective. and don't we can just burn them
sorry, I didn't quite understand that. Did you mean "We don't know how effective they are, and if they aren't, we can just burn the castle."?

Because that assumes we will know the effectiveness of the bombs before setting them off.

>knife to the throat isn't exactly rocket science
I suppose grimleal probably aren't trained to resist that sort of thing anyway. Be careful about trying that against tougher opponents.
>>
Honestly, what worries me is "Ardiel". That name sounds odd, and Corpsy mentioned non-prisoner, non-risen resources.... Stuff he didn't want to say to Inigo....
>>
>>32078681
>>32078681
I'm sorry, do you know how effective they are, why don't you tell me then Mr. Exppert.
If we're smart enough to make a bomb, we will know how big it is.
>>
>>32078920
I wasn't trying to belittle you, so get off your high horse.

Before mass production, bombs were not an exact science. Different blends of the same chemicals caused widely different explosions in terms of size, shrapnel, and power vs. volume of explosives. Knowing what chemicals to use is different from being able to identify the characteristics of a bomb you didn't make. Also, don't forget we're an amnesiac, and bombs were not foremost among the things we still remember.

Given the fact that we're not trying to blow up the building, and that as old as it is, it's still a fort, so we probably won't accidentally damage the building. That is not helpful with respect to keeping Inigo safe.

Setting explosives off from a distance is also very dangerous. A trail of gunpowder is very easy to erase with a passing breeze, and the trail itself burns very quickly and is unstable. It could set itself off too late, too early, or not at all.

assuming we even find some, how old do you think those bombs will be? Grimleal use large amounts of really dumb muscle: they won't stock bombs unless they're laying siege, and even then they would keep those under guard. The only choice is unused bombs left behind in the old fort, which we would have to find without getting caught by Risen.

Old bombs are...well, only to be used by the suicidal. They aren't waterproof, some rats may have eaten through some of it, etc.

TLDR if we roll well, no problem. if we don't, know that sappers always ran the risk of blowing themselves up.
>>
All of that's operating under the assumption we FIND explosives.

The best plans don't rely on blind luck. I say we go Tactician Espionage Action. Leave Inigo with the kids, and sneak around.
>>
>>32079818
Shouldn't it be backwards, you are the tactician, you are the more valuable one.

Have Inigo sneak around, he is the dancer.
>>
>>32079818
Have you ever heard the term "suspension of disbelief"? This is fantasy, you're taking it too seriously, besides, who's to say we can't mix our chemicals into a bomb, or set them on fire. I'm against sitting doing nothing while inigo gets fucked by a horde. It's unnecessarily dangerous
>>
>>32080058
You're going to have to wait for OP's ultimatum on that, since explosives were never really a thing in FE: Awakening in the first place. They could just not exist/be invented yet.
>>
>>32080058

>Stomp around as Morgan, have Inigo sneak, gather any flammable substances

You nod.

"Alright." You say, turning around. "Kids, my friend here is going to unlock your cells. Stay in them, and pretend they're still locked."

The kids seem to be nervous about you, but your confident tone and even gaze keep them somewhat calm.

"Then we're going to go clear out a path for you, and get you away from here." You point your thumb at the door, nodding to Inigo.

As he unlocks the doors, you explain your plan.

You'd head up, pretending that 'your servant' had turned on you, and he'd slip up behind you.

With his better agility, he'd skulk around, gathering what he could, and maybe ambushing that 'Ardiel', and taking out Risen quickly. Maybe grabbing some supplies to set the place ablaze on the way.

You would, of course, provide a brilliant distraction, using your cunning, wits, and charm. And axe or tomes.

Finally, the two of you get ready to go. The imprisoned children are ready to run at a moments' notice.

Reaching the door at the top of your stairs, you and Inigo nod at eachother, ready to start the plan.

Slamming it open, you split up, him running off to get lostin the somewhat mazelike halls, and you-
