You are Joshua Thirteen, of UNAAF Special Forces Division Six. You are one of the most powerful weapons ever created to fight against the demon infestation destroying the world. Alongside your brothers and sisters, you have been sent out on countless battlefield to claim victory back from the clutches of the monstrosities. But this mission is different.

You and your brother Matthew were dropped into Vegas to recover an artifact codenamed Compass from the research laboratory there, that had been overrun. The drop went awry, and the two of you landed in downtown, rather than on the facility itself, but you fought your way over, antagonizing an Alpha far too large to fight profitably, and made it to the lab.

Matt easily found the compass, but due to extreme corruption of the facility AI, it is inoperable and irreparable. While Matt worked on recovering the AI, you encountered the only survivor; Dr. Lauren Lockheart.

You scowl. “I’m not going to let you die. I’ll get you out of here even if I have to drag you out,” you declare.

She laughs a bit in bemusement and disbelief. “I’m no good to you either way, I can’t repair the AI and it would take me years to recreate the data. My father was the genius, not me. Just kill me and get it over with, I don’t need false reassurance.”

UNAAF cares, they dedicated a full platoon to getting it back, and they were all killed before they sent the two of you in. Your mission is to get the Compass, not help survivors. You would be breaking orders to save her, but damn it, you never get to save anyone.

“The compass can be repaired,” you respond.

“I already told you, it’s not broken. It’s working perfectly, you’re just a demon,” Lauren says as she turns and leans against the wall to continue playing on the tablet.

“I’m mostly not, really. But you can be saved. I can save you,” you tell her, hanging your sword from your back so you can face her without a weapon in your hands.

“Just how many marauders do you think are out there, on top of the Alpha demon? UNAAF is just going to nuke the place and be done with it. Vegas is forsaken anyways.”

“The nuke isn’t coming until the two, no three of us are out of here,” you state.

“I don’t care what your opinion of yourself is, there’s nothing two demons can do against so many. Or, you’re working with the alpha, and only want to extract me so your boss can eat me or worse.”

“Our boss doesn’t want you at all actually,” Matt shouts from the back of the AI room. Fans have started to hum and the cooling systems are louder than before. “Just let him help you. Jesus, what happened to this thing?”

“Nothing. It should be working perfectly as far as I know. You two are the first demons to get this far down and there’s nothing you could do to it from up top. And no one went in there for as long as I’ve been here. It just stopped working a few hours ago,” Lauren explains. You here a series of chimes and you see three dancing stars appear on the screen. “Do you want to play or something? Why are you looking over my shoulder?” she asks.

“Just curiosity.”

“Alright, look. What will it take for me to convince you that I’m human?”

She shrugs. “You can’t really. I’d have to see your soul somehow and that’s what the compass was built for. But the compass is saying you’re a demon. So what could you possibly do? The chance of you being some kind of doppelganger, or a skinshifter, or an animated pile of goop, or an insect projecting images directly onto my eyes, or something, is simply too great.”

“Heads up Josh,” Matt shouts as you hear him slam a processing cell wall shut. “This thing is going to be working in just a moment.” Then you hear the concrete walls far above you crumbling. The foundation creaks and rumbles as the supports start to bend under the weight of the alpha. Matt always did work well under pressure.

“Hmm,” Lauren says, tapping her lower lip and looking up at the ceiling.

“What is it?”

“Probably nothing,” she respond, still looking at the ceiling.

“Welcome to the battlefield. Everything is something. What is it?” you ask, looking up at the ceiling as well. You half expect it to just collapse outright on you the way she’s looking at it.

“I was just thinking that if you were human, there’s something I should tell you. But you’re demons. On the other hand, the only thing I’d accomplish by not telling you is keeping you a bit distracted from a nuke that’s going to kill you anyways. You’re going to get the Compass one way or another, so it seems like a good idea to tell you,” she explains as she closes her tablet to look at you.

“What? Do you have a way out for us, other than the front door?”

“We’re in the subbasement right now, one floor above us is an incomplete escape tunnel. And pretty soon the Alpha is going to crush the entire facility,” she explains.

“What good is an incomplete tunnel?” you ask as you feel more walls crumble above you.

Lauren shrugs and pulls the end of her nicotine stick into her mouth to chew up. A dirty habit, but that’s where most of the nicotine ends up. “The mining worm is still down there as far as I know.”

“It’ll work out, but first I have to help with the AI. If we have to wait for him to catch up we might not be in time,” you say as you step back towards the AI core room. Then you stop and glare at her, she’s already back on her tablet. “Don’t leave.” When she doesn’t respond, you nod and move into the room.

The change in atmosphere is immediate. The air is almost entirely hot dust and vaporized coolant and half the room is shaking with fans. “We gotta do this fast Matt,” you say as you take a knee to peer under the cables and drawers and see his feet.

He says something muffled, spits something out of his mouth, and says, “Then this’ll have to do. See that unused core in the corner? It crapped out a few months ago apparently, but it should be functional enough for us. Guess we won’t be getting everything though. Just pull it over and match the colors, I’ve already done the hard work.”

You grunt and pull the core over. The thing weighs a few hundred pounds, usually needs a forklift to be moved. It just makes a loud scrap as you pull it within range of the cables that Matt starts tossing out to you. You almost feel like a monkey matching the colored plugs to the colored holes, but in just a few seconds you have the core online.

Matt crawls out between your feet and dusts himself off. He’s sweating heavily and covered in computer oil, but can do little about his appearance. “Alright. This whole thing is going to combust in like, five minutes, but should work great until then,” Matt declares confidently as he grabs a monitor and powers it on before wrapping his arm around you. “So you gunna hit that or something? She’s pretty good looking, but I hope she gets over this whole death thing,” he whispers to you.

“I’d have to convince her we’re humans, which is a hell of a lot harder than you’d think,” you respond. You lean over towards him as he leers at the door. “Though, maybe if you set me up with Faye.”

Matt laughs. “A night with my better half? For a pass at some human girl who’ll probably only live a few more years at best? You’ll try fucking anything to get at her, won’t you?” he asks, slapping you on the back. “Besides, you got Victoria. She’d probably say you shouldn’t be bothering with anyone but her, you know?”

“Dude, I got ripped off. I mean, Tory and I get along great, but even I have weaknesses,” you respond before the monitor finishes booting up.

“Got something,” Matt says, releasing you and pulling the monitor closer. The start-up seems normal at first, slowly constructing the personality parameters of the AI to be interfaced with. It’s slow, but the parts are suboptimal. It all seems to be working perfectly, until it crashes. Matt groans.

“That’s not like you. You get it in one, usually,” you say as he throws the monitor aside and starts crawling back into the machinery.

“I’m hoping it’s just some of the cords that failed or something,” he says as he starts clearing a path for himself. Above you, another section of the lab collapses under the weight of the ever constricting alpha. The room rumbles, knocking the monitor to the ground.

“Shit, it’s back,” you say as you quickly yank Matt back.

“Alright, don’t touch it,” he commands as the two of you hunch over the delicate device.

A lone white underscore is blinking in the corner. Hesitantly, Matt reaches back and digs a dusty keyboard out of a shelf and connects it. Before he can type anything though, words start appearing.

“IT’S BEEN A WHILE."

"TELL ME.”

You reach over your brother’s shoulder and carefully type out ‘yes’ before hitting Enter.

“You sure that was a good idea?” Matt asks as the both of you wait for the program to respond.

“What’s the worst that could go wrong? Besides, everyone needs more power in a world like this,” you respond.

“THIS IS A TWISTED WORLD.”

“DO YOU WISH FOR THE REAL WORLD ONCE AGAIN?”

“Is there a mic it’s picking up or something?” you ask.

“Don’t know, but we don’t have time to waste on something out of a movie prop,” Matt says as he starts trying to end the program and start copying files. Surprisingly, it ends with little resistance, and the base program for the AI boots up. You can hardly follow his hands as he works around and starts digging through hard drive data to start copying to a portable one.

Then the screen crashing again.

“GO NORTH.”

“Alright, this thing is pissing me off,” Matt says as he crashes it again. The building rumbles again; you can’t imagine there is much left before it starts digging down.

“Try to copy it off or something. It might be useful. I’ll clear the floor above us. There’s an escape tunnel we might be able to use,” you explain. Matt nods and waves you off without responding as he continues to work on the computer. Lauren is sitting where you left her, still playing with her tablet as if the entire building weren’t about to collapse on her. “I’m going to go cut us a path. Be ready to leave when my brother comes out here.”

“Sure sure Mr. Demon. It should buy me enough time to three star these last challenges,” she responds, nodding her head along to the music in the darkness.

You sigh. “When we get out of here, I’ll prove to you that I’m a human. That I really am trying to save your life,” you say before walking past her and up the stairs.

The ceiling up here is cracking and breaking with every movement of the Alpha. Getting to the surface now would be difficult, but possible. But you can smell more of the animated dead. You get your rifle out and whistle as loud as you can. The piercing cry bounces down the halls and is quickly returned by shuffling and moaning. They aren’t even bothering to cloak their approach, and you easily get a feel for their numbers.

Three dozen have converged on your location somewhat, probably in response to your earlier fight. Which only makes it easier for you to cut them down with rifle fire. Shards of memory are still in the bodies, guiding them through the main halls, and making easy firing lanes. Your gut twists a bit as you watch your hollow point rounds rip each of them in half, but you focus on the task on hand.

1/2
>>
When you clear one hall, you spring down it and run to the next, clearing the dead from behind. The reports from your rounds echo down the halls even louder than your whistle, bringing them on you quicker and quicker as the building falls apart around you. Chunks of concrete begin falling down and smashing the laboratory machinery. Some of it even kills a few of your targets for you.

By the time you finish, the roots of the alpha are already digging down around you, looking for you as they entwine around the walls. But you find the tunnel Lauren spoke of, and you have a clear path back.

“Let’s get a move on Matt! Bring Lauren and the gear and let’s go. The tunnel is clear,” you shout as loud as you can. Then you glance to your side and see and see one root lifted up and pointed at you, listening. So you empty the rest of your clip into it, shredding it apart before switching back to your sword.

“Let’s make this interesting you fucker,” you say as you assess the demon’s encroachment. Half of its roots are still buried in concrete as they extend down to you, but that hardly matters to your blade. The steel is so massive it can hardly be called a blade, mere concrete can’t possible stop it.

You hack and cleave, ripping the roots apart in a fountain of blackened blood. But the more you cleave through it, the thicker they come back, and the less support the building has. The sides near the tunnel quickly seem to be nothing more than a living mass of flesh pressing in around you. You scowl, and focus your efforts on the path back to the AI core room, keeping it clear with huge, sweeping cuts.

But the footing is degrading constantly as more blood and flesh covers the ground, and even you’re forced to give ground back to the tunnel. You swear as roots close in like a net, blocking access back to the lower level. And Matt still hasn’t left. He should have finished long ago,but he still hasn’t arrived.

But you were keeping the alpha occupied for whatever Matt was doing, cutting through so much of it that it surely wasn’t able to focus on anything else. And at last, you see the tip of Matt’s blade rip through from the other side. A few more slashes and the two of them drop into the small room outside the condemned tunnel. “What the fuck took you so long?” you demand as Matt pushes Lauren ahead of him and into the tunnel.

“Just had to make it a quickie,” he answers.

“What?” you shout.

“I’m kidding,” he shouts back as you follow him into the tunnel.

You smash much much better than him.

And plot demanded the two of you have some explosives, but I'd already given you your loadout.
>>
“This is either much, much better than my plan, or much much worse,” Matt shouts as the two of you continue to sprint forward, your natural eyesight more than enough to navigate the crude tunnel. The first hundred meters still had the trappings of emergency lighting but farther ahead was pure darkness.

“We’ll see how it ends,” you shout, glancing over your shoulder at the mass of roots trying to press in after you.

“We have to be really fucking fast though. Our comms aren’t going to have service down here, so the candle is going to fucking fly. Don’t want to get caught in here during the light show,” Matt says.

Then you see Lauren stumble over the end of the concrete. Instinctively you jump forward and grab her before she can fall. “What the heck are you doing?” she asks as you tuck her under your arm and start running faster. Matt sprints ahead of you instantly and you catch pace with him. “I’m not a sack of, I don’t even know what we still use sacks for, but I’m not one!”

“My apologies. Would you prefer to be carried over the shoulder?”

“Carry me like a real man would, you stupid demon,” she snaps back at you. You groan and flip her in front of you. She yelps in surprise as you catch her in a princess carry. And you can’t help but laugh.

When she asks why, you answer, “Because you’re finally starting to act like one of the living again. I’m happy.” She’s glaring at you, but it’s certainly better than before.

“Cut the smooth talking Josh,” Matt shouts as he jerks his thumb back. One root has taken the lead down the tunnel behind you. It’s ripping through the stone as it burrows forward after you at an alarming rate.

You should consider yourself to be in a time bubble at the moment. There is much you don't know concretely in the present, that you only have guesses to cover. Your actions here will in fact impact what has actually occurred between now and the present. The threads of fate are writhing around in the shadows of obscurity at the moment, and you have the ability to yank on their tails to see what moves.

This is no idle flashback.

Yeah, answer is still nah. We already know that the main character does not die here, and it's already established that Lauren doesn't either. Also Matt is apparently still alive in the future.

Sorry dude. People can't just forget information already provided to them in earlier in a story. If people know that the characters aren't at any real risk here and already know the ultimate outcome (this and this character lives, this character dies but will do so later on), there is no tension and people are less invested.

It's why people usually care less about flashbacks, and they are the bane of quests.

“I’ll take care of this. Matt, take her,” you shout as you toss Lauren over to him. He easily catches her in his arms without breaking pace, and you skid to a stop. You spin around and pull out your blade once more. You’re a bit shoddy at it, but you focus on your muscles, dragging out Scath’s power to build as much energy into a single thrust as you can.

You line up the tip of your blade with the onrushing root and wait. Every muscle in your body is tense and bristling with energy, and your perception speeds up. Even in the absolute darkness of the tunnel, you can discern exactly where the tip of the root is. And, the instant before it hits you, you lunge and release all of your energy. The electric shock rebounds through your body, but as long as your blade is touching the demon, it will suffer as well.

You grit your teeth through the pain as you feel your blade bite into it. But the parting of the flesh is wrong. No ripping or tearing, only a smooth slice with no blood, and it doesn’t even notice your attack. Your body locked by the pain, you can do nothing but watch as the tip of the root splits in half to either side of your blade, and continues on, and rips into your chest.

>>
The tunnel starts flying past you as you’re ripped off your feet, carried by your bloody chest as the wounds open ever wider, trailing your guts behind them.

At some point you pass Matt, and see the two of them dive out of the way. You had already consumed all the energy from your ambrosia pack, so there is nothing left in your body to keep you going. Your vision starts to white out as an explosion softly echoes through the tunnel. Rocks seem to tumble and fall some distance behind you, but you can’t tell.

The root falls and catches on the ground, skidding to a stop and scraping most of your legs off with it. You struggle to stay awake, but with barely half a body left, you know it’s only a matter of time. Sixty or seventy years, however long it had been, you’ve been fighting this war with death. Seems like the reaper has caught up with you.

Matt is calling for you, and you try to stay awake for him, but the effort is too great.

“You’ve met with a terrible fate, haven’t you?”

“Would you like to try again?”

If we say no, does this mean that in the present we're a zombie?

Nah, we're fine. We got this.

>>
Next thread looking like tuesday afternoon, usual time ish. This thread's already been archived, though I'm sure there will be plenty of time to discuss things tomorrow.

Comments?
>>
>>32077180
Will it be another flashback?
>>
>>32077189
Dunno.

But you people need to take this arc more seriously, it is fucking your present situation over harder and harder.
>>
>>32077180
Flashbacks can be used shortly and sparingly to convey little bits of info, but trying to include rolls really doesn't work if the outcome is already known.
>>
>>32077216
>little bits of info
Doesn't quite work when I need to use it to introduce three of the most important characters in the story. People gloss over them as interesting world building that doesn't really matter, far too often.

Case in point. You people don't seem to notice/care that you're going to desperately need the Compass in the present.
>>
>>32077297
Is Lauren really that important? I wouldn't have guessed.
>>
>>32077297
We have no reason to believe we would need the compass in the present outside of that statement. We also haven't had any reason to believe the compass was accessible in the present. You keep saying we need to take this seriously because it affects the present. I believe you, but you have done a poor job of conveying that info. Just saying this is serious business doesn't cut it. You need to show it.

This is an attempt at constructive criticism. I apologize if it comes off as antagonistic.
>>
You have a talent for putting yourself in shitty situations Frank. I warned you weeks ago about flashbacks and you seem to be doing exactly what you shouldn't. You have a neat idea and a somewhat interesting setting, why would you try so hard to fuck this story up? I had already dropped this a few threads back because it got boring for me but it still saddens me to see this happen.
>>
>>32077364
I was a bit too tired when I typed that. Meant that you should be expecting on a meta level that I wouldn't be wasting this much time on this stuff if it wasn't going to be in the present as well
>>
Why didn't you people take the deal? it was a crit fail, against an Alpha demon, there is a limit of how much a QM can do to save our asses. Are you afraid that Fronk will use it to skullfuck us in the final battle ? Don't you trust him, not even a bit ?
>>
>>32079985
>Why didn't you people take the deal?
Because it was a flashback, it's not like we were in any danger of dying.

>Don't you trust him, not even a bit ?
Trust Fronk not to use a crit fail at the most inopportune time? No.
>>
>>32080164
well, we get these flashbacks by recovering our demons, right? what if they were a result of some kind of inner battle against them, and dying in a flashback = totally losing our mind
>>
>>32080175
What if? I guess we'll learn next thread.
>>
>>32080175
Anon, if we could die during a flashback it wouldn't a flashback then would it? You seem to be thinking of some kind of mind battle.
>>
>>32080164
>Because it was a flashback, it's not like we were in any danger of dying.
>i have plot armor, therefore i can ignore any possible dangers.

>Trust Fronk not to use a crit fail at the most inopportune time? No.
Does he have any precedents ?
>>
>>32079985
The deal is a retarted and a terrible thing. It has nothing to do with QM saving your ass. I would rather he just stopped trying to push that stupid deal because if he pushes it enough at some point players will randomly choose to take it and then everyone will get mad because of it. Nothing good will come out of such a retarded mechanic.
>>
>>32080427
Maybe, but you can't know that for sure.
>>
>>32080663
Pretty sure we've already made 2 deals, making a 3rd wouldn't be a great move
>>

what? i don't think we ever accepted one
>>
>>32080688
when did we make the first two
>>
>>32080663
What? I know for sure it is a stupid mechanic that should never be used. Pushing it several times like Frank does is beyond retarded.
>>
>>32080706
now that i think about it, we'd have exchanged a critfail for a later simple fail, so...
>>
>>32080698
>>32080700

>>

I'm curious what thread you dropped off on
>>
>>32081002
I can't remember presicely, last thing i remember was dealing with the vampire in some abandoned building. I hadn't read the flashback thread before that.
>>
In future threads, I'm going to wean/cut you off of given choices. You should know enough about the world/character by now that you can take full control.

A lot of you are going to say that's a bad idea, but it sounds like fun to me. The playerbase is small enough that it should work.
>>
>>32081245
I love that and wish more quests do it actually. I hate seeing 10 people quote a response before it's been five minutes till the update.

It actually works better with bigger playerbases though.

Hope it works out for you.
>>
I've said this before and I'll say it again. If you don't tell me what you want to see more of, this quest is just going to delve deeper and deeper into my own insanity. You should feel some amount of responsibility to tell me what you want to see more of so I know to give you more of it.

And next thread will be back in the present.
>>
>>32081245
not sure about that, but i guess more write-ins choices would be good
>>
>>32081888
I want to see more of the MC's insights and opinions on things, just catching up now, trying to shock a giant root charging at you is retarded. I asked you to do this after you got flustered when we followed the crow-bird demon thing back to the castle, and I'll ask you to do it again.
>>
>>32082311
I've been hands off on that because I feel the players should be providing their own reasoning, but at this point sure.

Also, the electric attack was a bad idea, the reasoning would have just been showing up Matt.
>>
>>32081888
I liked when we were in the forest doing crazy shit with that drago's blood.
so, more demons lore and Junior Woodchucks.
>>
>>32083262
>Junior Woodchucks
huh?

And getting exposition dump after info dump isn't really engaging. Interesting it may be, but motivating quest incentives it is not.

Tracking down your contracted demons not scratching the itch enough though?
>>
>>32083836
To me seeking power just for the sake of power and revenge is a weak drive, i was more interested in restoring memories and figure out what happen, but after the big reveal about Matt and you said that this story is simply revenge i kinda quit with crazy shadowrun theories.

>Junior Woodchucks
damn, i feel old.
>>
>>32084908
>i kinda quit with crazy shadowrun theories.

I consider it a simple revenge story if an acceptable response is stomping over to him and killing him. You don't /have/ to find out why he did it. You don't /have/ to enact grand revenge plots. You don't /have/ to postpone it to deal with demon threats. You /will not/ be judged if your response is to rip him apart.

Best of 3 is ridiculously distorted. It makes 80 equivalent to 50 and 50 equivalent to 13.

>>

agreed.
what do you think of kaleun's new system (4 1d6 rolls -4)?
>>
>>32085073
Single roll system is fine.
>>
>>32084951
But you complained about bad decisions, and how we fucked things up over and over.
I'm confused about how to play this quest.
>>
>>32085073
All roll systems are methods of chaotically generating chance on a table of probabilities referenced against DCs. If you know how to work with it, they are all the same.
>>
>>32085233
>If you know how to work with it, they are all the same.
Exactly, Frank's problem is that he doesn't know how to work with them as evidenced again and again.
>>
>>32085232
Context on when I said this? Otherwise I'll assume this was a comment following meeting Victoria.

The only way I can think to word this is, having a good or bad goal is independent from executing it well. There are lots of things that you could do that will and have shoot you in the foot. Also, when something strange happens, like the magpie flying back to the palace, knee jerk is dangerous.
>>
>>32085146
>Absolutely nothing hinting about open currents anywhere

Bait options a shit.

>>32085233
>they are all the same.
So why not use one that allows more people to contribute? Why not use the one that lets silly shit happen like double crits, crit-cancel-outs, and stuff like all 5 rolls not meeting a DC of 75? Are we helping you write a book are or we all supposed to be enjoying ourselves?
>>
>>32085416
>So why not use one that allows more people to contribute?
Because I have given up on complex dice systems. It is empirically impossible for me to appease you people.

>Bait options a shit
Then don't choose them.

Coincidentally this thread had two voters with I think two others abstaining because it's a flashback.

I guess that's our fault then?

>>
>>32085744
I was not expecting silence from a post like that.
>>
>>32085744
I enjoy this quest, but everyone should really chill out and not be so uptight. Also you need to communicate better with less aggression.A lot of what you get angry about (other than low participation, which is a symptom) is a result of poor communication, whether it's meta or in the story.
>>
>>32086490
You clarify a few things that i didn't fully grasp, i have nothing more to tell you.
>>
>>32085468
>Because I have given up on complex dice systems. It is empirically impossible for me to appease you people.

I'm not sure what other quests you've run, but in Eden City Quest you had a roll under system with a ton of dice, and chose the highest roll.

And you seemed surprised when people always rolled shit.
>>
>>32086901
Wolf Quest was terrible too. And he kept defending the system after finally giving up and accepting how ridiculous it was. It got better after that.
>>
>>32086945
>after finally giving up
*before
>>
>>32085468
>Then don't choose them.
It wasn't even clear it was a bait option. I was expecting him to shoot lightning out of his ass or something, not electrocute himself.
>>
>>32086961
To be fair, Matt did the same shocking attack with no results.
>>
You could always include a difficulty on the prompts. Maybe not hard numbers but a Easy, Med, Hard, Stupid Hard, and Plain Stupid. Could help with the rampant sperging going on. After you mentioned you were going to "Throw the book at us" I just skipped to the end. No reason to read the hissy fit of a GM/OP because no one gets his deep and meaningful plot.
>>
>>32086945
>>32086901
why changing the roll system? we already autowin against everything, interesting shit happens only on low rolls and you want to avoid them at any cost.
>>
>>32087324
I'm fine with the roll system. I was just perplexed why he was bitching about previous dice systems not being liked by the players when it was own fault for having shit dice systems.
>>
>>32087324
>>32087324
I never suggested changing the roll system. I like one roll d100.

If there is a problem, it is not in the dice.
>>
>>32087158
>because no one gets his deep and meaningful plot.
It was the blatant "no one here can possibly die, so we don't care" mentality.

>>32087446
>shit dice systems.
I disagree. They were all perfectly balanced and in line with the tone of the quest. Some people just dislike how swingy I like my crits, which is just opinion.
>>
>>32087808
>It was the blatant "no one here can possibly die, so we don't care" mentality.
>During a Flashback
Uhh, yes? That's a thing everyone does in every medium of entrainment.

If reality itself will warp the old LOTR movies to fit what happens in the new hobbit movies just so that I should feel tense when Bilbo gets in a shitty situation someone should actually tell me this will happen because otherwise I will not give a shit.
>>
Just throwing in my opinion but I feel like like this arc should have started the quest so that we were introduced to our best bro and the love of our life so that when we found out they betrayed us/were dead they wouldn't have just been names to the players but actual people we cared about. Again just my opinion
>>
>>32088092
Gotta say I agree with this man. Also would've made us feel like we were actually in danger.
>>
>>32088151
Precisely we go through this and then have a timeskip with invested players trying to figure WTF just happened. But I do admit there are probably plot reasons as to the current order of things
>>
>>32088253
That would go one of two ways. Either I give you control during the betrayal, and then expect you to roleplay forgetting a handful of threads, not to mention the things I'd have to pull out of my ass to ensure you lose, since you lost due to charging into the fight like a man wronged and ridden with grief and rage, not because Matt's inherently better than you or something.

Or I don't give you control during the betrayal and rail road you through the blacked out time.

And if you haven't noticed, part of the players are this guy >>32088078
and people like him, who don't seem to even try to act the part.

There is no solution to his dilemma on my end as far as I can see, with the given chronological order.

Also, you won't be hearing from me for a few hours.
>>
>>32088416
I see what you mean

What I meant was not the whole arc but just this mission so: mission prep, this retrieval mission, then we chat to Matt about the rebellion and THEN it skips to us being fished out of the water. With no memory of what happened between that mission and when we woke up
>>
>>32088416
>with the given chronological order.

Wow. Who would've thought.
>>
>>32088507
That falls into the meta reason of misrepresenting my quest. Obviously, the meat of this quest is not getting dropped into demon infested warzones.

Not to mention having to convince /tg/ to break up with Victoria and get with Lauren. I would have really fucking impressed myself if I had pulled that off.

>>32088537
Anon, you are severely underestimating how much occured before your betrayal, each impacting the other.
>>
>>32088661
I thought Lauren was dead?
>>
>>32088770
He's saying if this quest played in chronological order, /tg/ would glom onto Victoria and never let go, rather than go the "historical" route of breaking up with Victoria to get with Lauren. Joshua married Lauren before her untimely death, and before that he dated Victoria.
>>
>>32088661
Fair enough.
Just want to say I enjoy your characters and writing and that I hope that this storm passes soon
>>
>>32088800
So what he's saying is he wants to just write fiction rather than run a quest.
>>
>>32089089
Far be it for the QM to set the scene for us to act in. Truly an unforgivable crime
>>
>>32089269

>Setting the scene
>Playable flashbacks that retcon stuff in previous threads

pick one.
>>
>>32089347
The only thing getting retconned are his notes dumbass
>>
>>32089626
And QM is getting pissy about it.

It's really, painfully obvious he wants to just do fiction here. Constantly complaining that your players aren't 'in character' is a dead giveaway. The entire concept of doing playable flashbacks was retarded for a quest, doubly so with the QM's tendencies.
>>
>>32089818
If I wanted to be writing fiction, EDEN would have more than 33 pages.

You seem to have a different idea of what a quest is than I do. I have to question why you're even here, I'm clearly not providing you with the entertainment you're expecting.
>>
>>32090841
>>32088416
>and people like him, who don't seem to even try to act the part.
>who don't seem to even try to act the part.
>act the part.
Run a little practice quest by yourself and imagine the players are acting the part then just pastebin it for us.
>>
>>32091566
So you want me to write an extended scene with Josh acting entirely as I see him to be "in character", perhaps with character interaction that I otherwise wouldn't be able to fit into the quest because they're either dead or on the other side of the world or something similarly distant from him, and perhaps even use it as an oppurtunity to dump some exposition on you so it's not just a waste of your time to read?
>>
>>32092058
That's a very positive way to interpret what I said but sure, go ahead. That what how flashbacks work in most quests and that's why people were sitting out when they normally wouldn't.

Different people like quests for different reasons, some like to roleplay a character, some like to make a character theirs and some see quests kinda like a gauntlet, a unique set of problems to be solved as efficiently as possible with the tools at hand.

This quest started with a kind of clean-slate situation which inevitably attracts the latter two kinds of players when you clearly wanted mostly the first kind and those players had no idea that they're weren't wanted until this shit hit the fan and you told them they weren't doing it right.
>>
>>32092424
That's a very positive way to miss that I was being sarcastic, as I have written non interactive flashback story dumps already.
>>
>>32092542
Ah right, I forgot you actually set a precedent in this very quest for flashbacks NOT fucking with the present day situation and NOT needing tension.
>>
>>32092630
Look at it this way. Lauren was dead from the get go. There was no way other than flashbacks for you to interact with her, which is the only way of establishing any kind of emotional attachment with her so that you'd want to pursue her killer. Clearly just stating the facts was not enough to motivate most of you. And it wouldn't feel like a betrayal, opposed to a random act of violence, if you didn't like Matt.

Now, in the present day, there were routes that I could have you chum it up with Matt before learning what he did, things did no go that way. But there was no way for you to meet Lauren in the present, obviously. So I was truly limited to flashbacks.

This gives me two choices, interactive and non-interactive. I agree that for the most part, non-interactive is better so that there isn't time dickery. But be honest, how attached to her would you ever get if you never actually made choices with her? So I had to give you an interactive flashback. But there has to be tension in the choices or they're just a boring and drawn out way to get an exposition dump. Look up in this thread even to see posts asking for "the most efficient exposition dumping". Nothing is really at stake because you know everyone survives. So there's no dramatic tension, and you people are willing to crit fail your escape check, one of your first impressions with your fucking wife, because you know they won't die. Something has to be on the chopping block, which means time dickery of facts that haven't been established to you yet.

Everyone bitched and moaned and pissed everywhere when I did it the first time, so I relented. And then I gave part of the reveal with incomplete information. "Ha ha! It was your brother who killed your wife!" And not a single fuck was given. You all immediately cared more about working with the living. Why? You hadn't really met your wife, you were only told she was important to you.

So going back to plan A is my recourse.
>>
>>32092883
You fucked up from the start, expecting us to get attached to a character we never established a relationship with of our own initiative. To be honest your best bet is to just drop this storyline because trying to railroad /tg/ is just going to cause further deterioration
>>
>>32093121
It seems like he's figured that out so now he's trying to get us to care in a sort of "this is what you had and could have had." kind of way which is crazy difficult in quest format. His best bet would have been to paint Matt as one of those antagonists that's taken something from the MC and mix in some grief in between votes. Subtle brainwashing stuff.
>>
I'm enjoying the quest so far but I feel more attached to our notsister and Tory than our "wife". I can feel bad for the character, loosing a loved one is devastating, but I don't personally feel sorrow. I want revenge because they hurt Joshua, not because I (the player) am hurt. I'm not sure if this is coming across the way I mean it but its the best I can do.
>>
Might've worked if Josh had more agency as a character and we were playing as influences on him or something. Dunno how you could work that into a more serious story like this though.
>>
>>32093282
You'll understand when you confront him why that will be difficult.

>>32093301
Perfect example of exactly what I was saying. Thank you.

Also, wanting revenge for what happened to the character despite not personally feeling that way, if you act on it, is called roleplaying.
>>
>>32093400
Thought method could work if Josh had his own agency, but the players here were the collective voice of one of his demon contracts?

But on the other hand, that could be too radical of a change for the quest.
>>
>>32093460
*That method

Not sure how I had a brain fart that big.
>>
>>32093460
>Some kind of mentality related demon
>Implanted and contracted to give the solider faster and better thinking capacity
>Soldiers sometime complain that they can hear a sort of buzzing in the back of their mind
>The buzzing is actually the multitude of the demon's personalities talking to each other
>Josh is the first person that can subconsciously understand what it's saying but only if enough voices say the same thing at once.

It would probably behoove me to note that while I do have some dictates about what happened before the start of the quest, I don't mean to railroad and you in fact are very much deviated from what I had intended.

And the relationship with Lauren happened because she was outside of the war. Everyone else in your entire life was tying you to the war, and she wasn't. She wasn't your soul mate, she was just close enough. So losing her was more than losing your wife, it was losing your way out.

You are Joshua Thirteen, UNAAF Special Forces Division Seven. A soldier of the highest degree, and have been fighting the war against the demons for the past eighty years. You were winning the battles, but losing the war. Even in the horrors of war, you built a life for yourself with a woman, Lauren, whom you had saved. But humanity was betrayed, you were betrayed. When you recovered, you found yourself in an unprecedented world, a backwards world living in fear of the demons you very nearly triumphed against.

You searched for the answers to how such a world came to pass. As you gathered power back around yourself from your demons who had stolen it away, your memories returned slowly. First of Lauren’s prognosis and incompatibility with the transdifferentiation organ. Then, with Matt as the two of you survived yet another suicide, and joined forces to fight back against the military that had betrayed you. Then you found a third memory from the soul of a demon you stole, but did not contract.

A memory of burning grief and rage, as you held Lauren in your arms as she died from poison Matt had released. And of you confronting your brother, and being beaten, destroyed, and cast aside. And the rage from that time fills you now. Matt is in the city, just outside the palace walls.

“Josh? What did you do? Are you alright?” someone asks.

“It was his fault. I can remember it now. All these years he’s gotten away with it, it was all him. Matt betrayed everyone, killed everyone and left only me, sealing me away for as long as he could.” You find yourself bent over on the ground of the temple, your nails digging through the stone ground as you back burns with power. Then Victoria puts her hand on your shoulder for just a moment before jumping back.

seriously, we have to assume that he didn't lose his demons (or spent the last 100 years as a jellyfish), so he'll be stronger than us

“I just found a new bag of tricks is all. A certain fire demon,” you respond as you get to your feet. Your body is burning up and sweat is pouring off of you from trying to adapt to the new demon’s biology. You’re starting to wonder how stable your body will be, but you just need to get Scath’s power, or kill Matt and release the energy. A bridge to be crossed at another time.

“Josh, you know you weren’t meant to have this kind of power. It’s too dangerous. What if you lose control?” Victoria asks, hesitantly putting her hand on your shoulder again. Her other hand is clutched to her chest to hold her towel up. Seems neither of you bothered to get dressed, and you can see the water on her body steaming off just from being near your presence.

“I’m not going to lose control. I already ripped the demon’s personality out of the power, or the Dragon did, I’m not really sure. This is just raw. And you demons are withholding so much power from me I’m barely at half power. I need more if I’m going to kill him,” you say as you stare at her. “I need your power.”

“Absolutely not,” she says, dropping her hand away from you and stepping back.

“He killed my wife! He nearly killed me! Do you want me to just let him off the hook or something?” you shout at her.

“I’ve worked with Matt for the past hundred years, and he’s the same Matt he’s always been. You have to calm down Josh. I’m sure he had a reason for what he did.”

>>
“A reason? Seems to me that his reason was being an uncaring, backstabbing cunt,” you spit at her. “Give me my power back, right now Victoria,” you demand as you march over to her. “You want me to protect the queen? Give me the strength to end her threat.”

“You’d destroy yourself the way you are. I know you Josh, I know what you’re going to go do. You’re going to run over there, half-cocked and angry. And he’ll beat you, just like he did the first time. And the answer isn’t more power,” she says as she backs away. But then her back bumps up against the wall, and she has nowhere to go.

“More power is always the answer. It always has been, it always will. It’s been this way since the dawn of the world. When too objects collide, the one with more energy survives,” you state as you reach forward to grab her neck.

Then the doors to the temple are thrown open. You snap your head around to assess the half dozen guards rushing in armed with swords and chainmail. They starting shouting at them, everything from “Lady Victoria!” and “Heathen, blasphemer!” to everything between. They’re just normal humans who clearly don’t know who you are.

You groan as Victoria quickly grabs the palm of your hand and sinks her teeth into it. You snarl and bring your attention back to her.

Yeah, sorry I slept in so much, this thread is going to be short due to that.. And on top of that voting is going slowly, so I really don't know how much is going to be accomplished here. I have to be somewhere in under two hours.
>>
Okay, let me make sure I have this straight:

We are objectively weaker than Matt. He also beat us before. Victoria is still injured. Even with her power, we won't be back to 100%. We have no idea what Matt plans to do when he sees us again. Our ability to not immediately beat the shit out of Matt is marginal at best.

Victoria wants (wanted?) us to protect the Queen. Except we're not strong enough to do anything and us showing up could wind up with Matt trying to splatter us, and if he doesn't, we'll probably try to splatter him.

>>
>>32105965
The only thing I need to add to your reasoning is a bit of math

The Dragon is/was 40% of your total power, Matt did not contract with the dragon so he /should/ have only been at 60% of your raw power, which with the right trickery and you bereft with guilt was possible to take you down, but knowing him, he wouldn't have taken those odds.

But, you're at 50% power right now, and Victoria would be another 15% power, putting you at 65%, just over where he should be.

Beelzebub would put you at 60, Scath would put you a bit under, and Akab would put you a bit over.

Victoria, the vampire, just bit you. What do you think she's about to do? This isn't a matter of losing control of your strength, but of your will.
>>
>>32106244
Probable consequences of failure: reduced relations with Victoria, difficulties with the law. Since it's not complete failure, I assume we just keep acting like a rampaging asshole. Continued lack of emotional control.

Probable consequences of success: some modicum of self control with respect to this entire situation. Possible salvaging.

I'll take it.

You rip your hand away from her, her fangs tearing through the skin between your thumb and index finger. You shake your hand, flicking the blood across the ground, and it’s healed in an instant. “The fuck was that for?” you ask as she wipes her lips.

“Fire demon blood tastes like shit you know,” she says, spitting some of your blood on the ground. “You’ve never tasted better than the day we made our contract, you know?”

“I’m not your buffet.”

“No, but that doesn’t matter. You don’t have any resistance right now. No Scath, no Beel, no Dragon. Certainly not me. Not even Akab’s temperament, just you and the fire demon in there really,” she responds as she straightens up and looks you in the eye.

“That’s still not enough to influence me and you know it,” you say, keeping one eye on her, and the other on the soldiers circling around you.

“That one little bite not really, but I certainly dosed you up as best I could when you were so kind as to heal me. Now then, I command you, leave this place, and do not fight Matt,” she says, staring you directly in the eye. Her eyes flicker and you feel an itching behind your own eyes. She had left quite a deposit there apparently, almost enough to get through to you.

“I told you it’s not enough,” you respond as you feel the poison burn away. Her confidence switches straight to fear.

“Sir, you have committed treason against the crown! You are hereby under arrest!” the captain of the soldiers declares.

We won't leave, but we won't fight Matt yet either. We'll bide out time until we are more powerful.

Also if she tries to dose us with mind control venom again, we'll either kill her or disable her in some way that leaves her alive but unable to act (can't remember if her dieing means we die).
>>

That too. But he may have been as well, not as severely, but your constituition would make up for the difference, maybe. It was certainly not your best fighting.

So how is the venom administered?

Oh well, if she tries mind control again then remove teeth, fangs, hands and feet and keep her chained up in a box mostly buried into the foundation of an abandoned building and being visited periodically to be fed.

Where there's a will, there's a way!

To get out of the war. To get rid of that nagging voice in the back of your head trying to make you lose control. So you can actually die like a normal person. Lots of things that are hard to express but would be apparent after fighting a non-stop demon war for eighty years

Vote is to go find Scath

“Fine, I’m out of here. I have other demons in the city I can call on. Ones that won’t screw me over like you are,” you say as you turn away from her and starting walking back to the baths. The guards try to stop you, but you break the wrist of the first man to approach you and they quickly decide that protecting Victoria is more important than bringing you in.

You take a deep breath of the air, noticing a peculiar cold draft in the air. Like arctic wind was mixed with the air. But it is no immediate danger. As you return to the baths and change back into your clothes, you extend your awareness across the city. Beelzebub has moved through Epsilon, closer to the palace. You’ll have to get to him if Victoria thinks she can poison you again.

But Scath is the one you need to keep your body from breaking down. As always, his soul is as difficult to find as he is. But he has part of your own soul in him, and it is far from impossible. You jump back over the palace walls and return to the slums, he went and found you. You return to the Gremlin Brewery as quickly as you can, ripping up the cobblestone as you slide to a stop.

Alice is outside, sitting on a barrel and kicking her feet back and forth. “Mr. Thirteen? What are you doing out here?” Lucian asks. You hadn’t noticed him, but he’s on the opposite side of the road, sweaty and out of breath, leaning on a wooden blade.

“Practicing in the street isn’t a good idea you know,” you respond as you straighten your clothes and feel around inside. Scath is definitely in the brewery.

“I was inside, but you kicked me out,” Lucian responds.

>>
You turn to Alice. “I didn’t feel like telling Cyn, but you have a look-a-like in there. I’d give him a moment if I were you,” she explains, rolling her eyes. You frown and put your hand on the wall of the building, and find a rhythmic thumping coming from inside. Your eyes narrow as you start coming up with a proper punishment. Then you notice both Alice and Lucian sniffing the air, and looking at you.

“What the hell did you do? You smell like a fire demon,” Alice asks.

“Long story,” you respond, before going into the brewery to confront your demon.
