Your name is Michael Dunkin, and you now work for the Inquisition. Previously you were a sergeant in the 291st Cadian Stormtroopers, but now you find yourself in the company of Inquisitor Christina Massey of the Ordos Xenos. After saving her life at the cost of your men and your life (the old one, at least), you've been officially proclaimed a dead hero and recruited into her retinue. Now, with your new life and future in her hands, you're tasked with looking after Christina's well being. And whatever else that entails.

With the main players of the ship now aware of you and vice versa, Christina allows you free reign to enjoy the rest of the afternoon. Now, with the eccentric techpriest Melodi in tow, you head to the Antebellum's armory to see about your gear, both old and new.

Straightening, you offer the man a salute.

"Lieutenant Dunkin. Lady Massey's new bodyguard." You introduce yourself.

"I thought I heard Tony say he was letting you in," The man says, pausing to look you over before continuing. "She told me you'd be down sooner or later. The name's Cachino, and this is my armory. Break anything and I break you. On that note, I'm guessing you came down here to see what you could get your hands on, didn't you?"

"The thought did come to mind," You admit with a shrug and a smile. "But what about my old gear? My Long-las and the rest? Did any of it survive?"

"They never brought in a rifle, but I still got your other stuff locked away," He grunts. "Was planning on using it all for spare parts, and I got the ok from her. Want to look it over for something to keep, or move on to the good stuff?"

(Sorry about this. The site went a bit wonky and wouldn't let me post. A great way to start things off, for sure..)

For all the time you cursed, smacked, and repaired your old gear you can't bring yourself to scrapping it without seeing it one last time.

"It saved me one last time," You decide. "I guess... pay respects?"

Cachino seems oddly pleased by this, though considering his own many augmentations you don't doubt his viewpoint by now is more aligned with the Mechanicus than the typical Guard one.

"Fair enough," He says, turning and signaling both of you to follow. As he continues on, Melodi leans over to you.

"He's got more metal in him than I do, by now," She grins. "And I'm responsible for installing most of it, too."

"I think I'll just stick to the leg, if that's ok with you," You answer, much to her amusement.

"Oh, very well," She heaves a dramatic sigh as you follow the sergeant into a back room full of bits and pieces of just about anything vaguely metal. However, it doesn't take you long to find a familiar set of olive flak armor laying on a table near the center of the storage room. With it is your laspistol, the belt and holster it came with, and your old combat knife. However, as you grow closer, Melodi lets out a surprised gasp.

There's a sizable hole in your flak jacket's chest plate, caked with something dark and reddish brown. On a closer examination you find the cut having gone all the way through to the back, and you shudder involuntarily.

"We've been busy," Cachino explains lamely. "Never really got around to cleaning things up."

You turn the armor over in your hands, every dent and scratch looking more profound than the last. Just when you think you can hear something, or someone, in the distance a hand touches your arm and gives it a gentle squeeze.

"Mikkey?" Melodi asks, a touch of concern in her tone. "You ok?"

>Never better, Mel.

We are sooo keeping our old knife, as they say, one knife is none and two are one.

With effort you nod and give Melodi a weary smile.

"I'm alright," You assure her. "Just... remembering things."

Her expression is a thoughtful one as she considering saying something, but instead decides to simply return your smile with her own.

"Can I keep the knife?" You ask, deciding to not let yourself dwell on things.

"Eh?" Cachino seems lost for a moment before shrugging. "Don't see why not. May wanna give it a wash sometime, though."

The white and purple ichor staining the weapon actually gives you some small reassurance as you sheath the thing and clip it onto your belt. Now you just need a good set of armor and a rifle.

"Thank you, Sergeant," You tell them man, who once more shrugs off your words with casual ease.

"It's your stuff. No need to thank me for it," He says. "Now, are we done here?"

Um. A few things.
Cadia fields Shock Troops, not Storm Troopers. Storm Troopers are more of your special forces, "operators" if you will. Shock Troops are your en masse heavy infantry.
Shock Troops don't wear flak armor. They wear carapace armor.
Shock Troops also use hellguns, almost never long-las. In the case of their sergeants, usually a power sabre or chainsword and hellpistol.
That's all I can think of for the moment.

"Lead the way." You tell him, waving the man forward.

With a grunt Cachino leads you both back out into the main armory. You're taken over to a corner seemingly dedicated to armor, sporting all manner of gear that you'd only previously heard of. Though the mirrors on the wall make you scratch your head, you don't give it too much though before you feel someone grab you by the arm and pull it outward. Turning your head, you find an odd sight.

"Arms out," Cachino orders you, measuring tape in his free hand. "Don't move, and for Emperor's sake stand up straight. I hate slouchers."

You look over to Melodi, utterly confused, but she seems a bit too occupied trying not to laugh. Loudly, at least.

You're first instinct is violence, but you manage to fight down the urge and instead endure this oddity in silence. Pausing in his work, Cachino gives you an appreciative nod before continuing his work measuring your limbs.

"Finally, we've got someone that's not a baby," He grumbles. "It's always 'Mr. Alvarez, you're hurting me!'. 'That's too tight!' And my personal favorite, 'Get your hands off me!'"

The mirrors suddenly start making a bit more sense, but that just leads to even more questions.

"Am I getting ready to try on carapace or a suit?" You ask.

"Yes," Cachino answers. "Whatever Lady Massey needs you to wear, she gets me to find or make it. Whether a firefight or a ball, I won't have our people not looking their best."

You shoot Melodi a halfhearted glare when he's not looking, but she only smiles innocently from her perch on a nearby crate. Her mechadendrite offers you a brief wave.

Eventually Cachino seems to have gotten everything he needed, typing several things into a dataslate before sending it off with a servo-skull. Then he turns back to you and hold up a finger.

"Stay here and don't touch anything," He orders you. "I'll know."

With that the man takes his leave, disappearing into another backroom that shuts behind him as he enters. Melodi watches him go as well, before turning back to you with a grin.

"Don't worry one bit," She assures you. "Signore Alvarez has a fine taste for fashion and efficiency."

>No offense, but if its pink, I'm gonna kill him.

Having spent the past several minute standing stock still, you allow yourself a moment to stretch before inspecting the tables around you.

"No offense, but if its pink, I'm killing him," You joke lightly, then stop and turn to face her, brow raised. "Signore?"

"Cachino comes from a place where everyone talks funny," She explains, watching you move with curiosity. "Besides, if you put a guy back together enough times you're bound to hit it off eventually."

A number of various weapons and other pieces of gear sit scattered about, mainly hellgun parts but also more unique sets. You see the gutted half of a melta gun and run a hand across the barrel, wondering what you could upgrade to after a hellgun.

Then the door behind you hisses open and your hand snatches back. Turning, you see Cachino approaching you with a set of black and gold carapace, with boots and a helmet sitting atop the pile.

With almost paternal-like care he sets it all down on a nearby slab of clean table and takes a step back, watching you expectantly.

You approach the armor and go about carefully inspecting each piece. It's a bit like your old set, but vastly improved. Even he same chest plate angles and visor shape, just like...

This is Cadian-pattern. More importantly, this is Kasrkin armor. A virtual replica of Dan's, albeit with different colors.

Despite the surprise, your many nights at the tarot table allow you to mask it and instead you give an approving nod.

"Very nice," You tell him, flipping over the helmet to peer inside. "It's even in my favorite color."

"A pain in the ass, too, to be last minute," Cachino adds. "But I admit, it's a piece'a work. I suggest you keep it that way."

"Don't you worry, sergeant," You try and assure him, giving him your best smile. "I'll look after it as best I can."

"Well, that's more than I get from most," He grunts. "I'll take it."

You find yourself feeling like a child again getting your Whiteshield gear for the first time. It's not the same as the Kasrkin ceremony, of course, but you'll take it all the same. Just the sheer technical side of the thing- from the advanced vox system to the re-breather and the possibility of a grav-chute- makes your head spin.

>Try it on now? You've never been particularly discreet to begin with, and you've got something on underneath.

As you inspect your new gear an intriguing notion strikes you and you turn to the sergeant.

"Do you mind if I try it on?" You ask. "I've got everything covered, before you panic."

The reactions from the two are varying, to say the least. Cachino simply lets out an amused snort and gives you a bemused shrug. Melodi, meanwhile gapes at you like you'd suddenly grown a second head.

"Make it quick," Cachino suggests, but by then you're already working on it.

Your fatigues are neatly put aside and you begin to work on the armor in your skivvies.

As you do all this the Sergeant-at-Arms pulls out another dataslate and begins to tap away it, but Melodi simply covers her face with her mechadendrite.

"Are all guardsman this... forward?" She asks, sounds more than a little uncomfortable.

"Artillery coming down, the LT shouting to get ready to contacts, you kinda forget to be embarrassed. That's not even the worse moments, either. Imagine, if you will, having to take a piss with nothing but a bumpy chimera, a canteen, and your pals to-"

"Lieutenant," Cachino speaks up, halting you. "Is that really somethin' to talk about in front of a lady?"

Your head pops free and you stare down at your new armor before returning your gaze to Melodi and giving a polite smile.

"My apologies," You say. "Is there a problem, Miss Coyle?"

The techpriest is giving you a look that's half part horrified and intrigued. With a sigh and a shake of the head she stares at you with a bemused expression.

"Not at all, Mr. Dunkin," She deadpans. "I just thought you'd like to know there are plenty of bathrooms here and absolutely NO artillery going off."

Even still, she pauses and cocks her head to the side, as if waiting to be proven wrong. Thankfully she isn't and Cachino takes the moment to continue.

"Well?" He prompts.

"Fits like a glove," You tell him. "Though the codpiece is a little tight."

"Ah, my apologies," Cachino waves you off, walking over to a nearby container and popping it open. "I thought I'd measure it to scale so there wasn't any false advertising. Guess I must'a messed up somewhere."

"It's more of a personal preference, really," You explain, flexing a gloved hand. "I like to give the boys a bit of room to breathe."

Melodi's hand smacks against her forehead while Cachino just shakes his head and mumbles "Guardsmen." Then he turns back to you, a pair of new toys in hand.

"The trusty hellgun and hellpistol," He explains in a tone that hints at how often he's done this speech. "Reliable, durable, and able to knock just about anything on it's ass. The rifle'll be connected to a power-source on your back to take out the need for reloading, but it can also be switched to power the pistol if you need it. A straight week's worth of juice, but times like those are rare."

You take the rifle first and find the grip not too different that of a long-las or any other rifle. With a bit of work you connect the power pack to it and the things lets out a soft hum. Locking it into place on your back, you then take the sidearm and the holster it comes with. Though not as flashy or sought after, you know you'll be able to use it well in a pinch.

With your weapons and gear now in place, you turn to the mirrors and give yourself an approving once-over.

"You can gawk elsewhere," Cachino informs you, crossing his arms. "Are we done here?"

"The hellpistol comes with it," Cachino says, rubbing his chin (one of the few parts of his face still flesh). "I can handle it for the hellgun, but you won't have it done until tomorrow."

Melodi perks up, as if to say something, but then seems to rethink it and returns to petting and baby-talking a servo-skull.

"Anything bigger than a frag grenade I can use?"

"On missions? We got just about anything you could ask for. Right now? Fuck off. Not bein' rude, but I don't like live ordinance goin' around my home unless it's needed."

With a cautious hand you unhook the hellgun and hand it over to Cachino, who takes it with equal care.

"This doesn't mean I'm completely useless," You assure him. "Give me a repair kit and I'll look after my own stuff. Just don't expect me to light some incense candles or something."

"So long as you don't clean it with your own blood or other bodily fluid I think there's no cause for concern," Cachino replies, nodding toward the door. "Good to meet a new face, but now's the time to be off. Keep an eye on this one, Mel."

"Aye, aye," The techpriest answers, jumping off the crate and to her feet. "Does this mean I'm allowed back in here without an escort?"

"Absolutely not," He says, however lacking the typical irritation directed at you. "Not yet, at least."

Though dejected, she bids the sergeant farewell and with your new gear (minus the hellgun) the two of you depart from the armory. As the blast doors groan shut once more Melodi lets out a sigh and sticks her tongue out behind her before turning back to you.

"Well, first," You begin. "What were you going to say in there?"

"Huh?" She asks, confused for a moment before smiling sheepishly. "Oh, that. Nothing. I was just... going to offer to handle upgrading your hellgun for you; maybe tweak other bits of it too. It's alright, though. Signore Alvarez knows his way around firearms better than I do, and hasn't blown up the armory. Yet, at least."

She seems rather peeved at that, and before you can stop yourself you let out a yawn that stretches out more than you'd like. Suddenly, the armor starts weighing down on you, and you begin feeling the affects of sparing with Vincent.

"Tired?" Melodi asks, smirking at your attempts to cover the yawn.

"Eh, a bit," You admit. "I think I'll turn in. Gotta be ready for whatever deathtrap I get thrown into next."

"That's smart," Melodi nods. "Well, I had fun, at least."

"Same here. Goodnight, Melodi... or whatever time it is."

"Night, Mikkey," She chuckles, bidding you goodbye. However, not before reaching into her cloak and pulling out a vox communicator. "You won't always be in your armor-or so I guess-, so this is for when you're aboard the ship. It's already got you synced with the rest of the team, so all it takes is a bit of button pressing and you're good!"

"If it messes up, do I have to turn it on and off again?"

"That, or bang it against something," Though you meant it as a joke, Melodi replies with professional advice. Or so you think, before she gives you one last grin for the evening.

With that you part ways after a short bout of directions, and with a new mission in mind you head for your new home.

The quarters for most of the team, as you find out, are among the higher and more extravagant levels of the ship. A handful of crewman point you to your room, and before long you're looking at a door that has your name written on it. By the Emperor, that woman works fast.

Taking a breath, you grab the handle and enter.

The door, an oddly wooden thing, gives way and you step inside. It only takes you a few moment for you to shuffle uncomfortably, already feeling like a fish out of water.

Everything about the room is lavish. Too lavish. From the silk sheets on the kings size bed to the overly ornate dresser and everything in between, you remember Delmar and his gold cloak. Standing in the middle of it all, head to toe in carapace, you can't help but laugh at the craziness of it all.

"Is something humorous, Master Dunkin?"

Your hand moves in a flash, hellpistol coming free from its holster as you dive for cover behind the bed. The sound had come from your right, and there's virtually no cover, so...

The servo skull lazily descends from above, coming to a halt atop the bed and stares at you and you at it. Then, as if to drive the oddity home, it does something you didn't even think was possible for a servo skull.

It speaks.

"Salutations and felicitations, Master Dunkin!" It greets you cheerfully. "I am ever so much delighted to finally make your acquaintance. My name is Jeeves, and as you serve Lady Massey I shall serve you, either until I am deemed unneeded or you are kill in the line of duty."

>>
>>32044384
I always though the skull was just a hollowed out housing for the machinery? Though that WOULD be a mostly satisfactory response.
>>
>>32043779

Huh.

"Hello, Jeeves," You say, standing and holstering your sidearm. "Why exactly did they give me a servo skull, again?"

"Why, so that I can look after your every need!" Jeeves replies in a cheerful tone that makes the skull all the more unnerving.

While part of you wants to believe that, a more cynical side doesn't doubt there's a recording device somewhere on him. Or in the room. Or both. Sitting down on the bed, you give the thing a hesitant pat on the head before you go about removing your boots.

"So, this is my room?" You ask it.

"Oh, but of course! Someone tasked with looking after Lady Massey must be well looked after. No expense is too much."

"And the price of everything in this room?"

"23.7 Million credits. Another 11.4 Million in the master bathroom."

You hadn't even realized you even had one of the latter, but a quick search shows a closet and another door that leads to no doubt this famed master of bathrooms. It's hard to imagine anything worth so mu-

"Is that a bar?" You ask, a faint glint suddenly in your eye.

"Would you like a tour of the suite?" Jeeves asks. "It would be my honor."

>Humor him/it.

>>32044437

The most important part of the servitor is the brain. Servitors are usually modified humans who are lobotomized afterwards to prevent them from going insane. Mindscrubbing would work too but the servitor would remain sentient and probably go crazy when performing menial tasks. Plus mindscrubbing is risky and way way more expensive than lobotomization.
>>
>>32044442

Chances are mel and the inquisitor are watching so have it show you the bathroom and take a lavish bath. You've been out for a pretty long time so you must smell badly.

Mite be fun.
>>
>>32044892
Hmm i liking that idea
>>
>>32044442

You pause in your undressing and consider humoring the floating skull. Hesitantly, you decide it wouldn't hurt and stand.

"Lead on, Jeeves," You tell him.

"Splendid!" He replies, the happiest lifeless skull you've ever seen. The only one, thankfully. It hovers over to what you gathered to be a pair of doors leading into wardrobe and seems to beckon you closer. "I'm afraid to say your current options are rather lacking; being split between black and gold, or both. However, I'm certain you're impeccable eye for design will see it varied soon enough!"

Sure enough, the thing is almost half the size of your old barracks, with several black and gold sets of fatigues with matching boots being all that it holds. The few sets of clothing that it hold seem to make the rest of the room seem even larger in comparison, and if anything it annoys you. You never had much use for the rich or nobles, and now that you're suddenly being treated like royalty it just feels wrong.

Oblivious to your inner thoughts, Jeeves moves onto your already favorite part of your room.

"Polished aliswood- the same as the bed's nightstands- stocked with several choice vintages," Jeeves says, almost sounding wistful. "For a restock, all you need do is ask one of the servants and they'll see to just about anything you require and I cannot do. Next to it is a kitchenette, should you ever feel the need to make something for yourself after scoring a kill out on the hunt. Currently under-stocked, but I'll see to filling our larders once more with the uttermost haste."

You consider stopping to have a more detailed inspection of both places, having vague memories of being the squad's cook and possible drunkard, but already the little drone is on the move. Now he's next to a massive bookcase, looking it up and down. Nearby is a plush chair far to snobby for it's own good, sitting behind a desk that lacks a single sheet or dataslate.

>once more

Have him tell us about who lived here previously

I'm guessing that was the previous bodyguard who got his face eaten by a nid?
>>
>>32045087

"'A man who reads lives a thousand lives. The one who does not only lives one," Jeeves quotes. "While I'm sure you find yourself more at home pillaging and murdering, you can find many intriguing texts of both fiction and nonfiction here."

You want to take offense, especially after realizing there's a FIREPLACE, for Emperor's sake, but for some reason his constantly merry demeanor keeps you from fully committing to a scowl.

"Now, onto the main event!" He calls, and for a moment you think he's going to ram the bathroom door. Instead, he rapidly ascended at the last moment and glides into a cubby hole that opens just long enough for him to enter. Almost immediately, you make plans for jamming that thing shut.

Though you've got a bad feeling about this, you open the door leading into the bathroom and aren't disappointed. A too big mirror sits on one wall, with a too big counter underneath sporting too many sinks.

Part of the bathroom consists of a shower that could no doubt fit a half dozen people, and there there's some sort of small swimming pool on the opposite side. In the farthest corner of the pool, sitting upon a platform, a statue of a Leman Russ sits, barrel pointed upward as if in parade. All in all, as gaudy as you imagined, if not more so.

You return to the main bedroom drained once more, though a shower does actually sound like a good idea right about now. However, as you resume undressing atop the bed, a thought strikes you.

"What about this?" You ask, patting the crimson sheets

"Oh, that," Jeeves seems to scoff. "Carubian silk and feathers. Rather drab, if I do say so myself. Now, is there anything you wish to possess or know, Master?"

"What can you do in a fight?" You ask as you pull your armor off.

"I'm afraid I leave that to your baser, more barbaric instincts, Master," Jeeves says, sounds almost as if he's letting you down. "I am to assist you while on the ship or on civil occasions out of it, but I can offer to such thing in combat. Apologies."

"That's a fair point, actually," You tell him, for some reason almost feeling bad for the little thing. "So, how did you get to become... you?"

"Oh, it's a rather dull tale, Master," Jeeves moves his head in what you guess is an armless shrug. "I served with Lady Massey for some time with most of my limbs intact, before suffering a most grieving wound in her service. Though my body may be gone, I still serve her and the Emperor however I can."

As he explains, a sinking feeling settles into your gut as you begin to get a faint idea of just who you're talking to.

"Does that mean...?" You begin, and for nothing but a single bone Jeeves picks up well.

"Please, Master! Do try and give me some credit. I have been in my current state for quite some time. No, your immediate predecessor was another."

Though you're not sure if you really WANT to hear, you decide to do it anyways.

"So what can you tell me about my predecessors? How long do they usually... last before they expire? What kind of situations can I expect to be thrown into? I suspect you're quite old so you probably have some good stories, right?" You ask, sending a boot flying.

"I do take minor offense to being hinted at being ancient, but yes, I suppose I do know a thing or two," Jeeves admits. "However I can say little and less for some of your questions. There's never really a set time for how long her bodyguards tend to last, though that would be rather continent. Some of the past bodyguards, at least the cause for their demise, has been wiped from my memory for either being too graphic or classified. Or so I wager."

The servo skull bounces through the air, reminiscing as he goes.

"Number 3 was eviscerated by a mad chirurgeon; 3 being myself. Number 6 was captured and tortured by Dark Eldar for a solid month, and by the time they'd been found Number 7 had to put her down. Number 7 then proceeded to commit suicide. Number 9 took down an Ork Warboss with several strings of demolition charges. So on and so forth."

You gape at the skull's aloofness about all these deaths as if they were part of the weather forecast. The words form before you can stop them.

"What number am I?" You ask, but already you're biting your tongue.

"Why, Number 13 of course!" Jeeves informs you with a hearty laugh.

The urge to grab a drink is a strong one, but instead you decide to try and advance the topic as fast as possible.

"What can you tell me about Lady Massey? Or her entourage?" You ask.

"As I said some members, both active and dead, are classified, and I've been informed to keep you limited with personal knowledge on your living companions. Apologies." Jeevs informs you with a bow of the everything. "However, I may still be able to answer. What exactly is it you wish to know?"

After all that you want nothing more than a good drink, a shower, and some sleep. Possible in that order, possibly not.

"I think that's all for now," You tell him. "Could you make me a drink while I take a show?"

"Of course! What would you like, sir?" Jeeves asks, thrilled to have his first real request.

"Do you know what a Cadian Potshot is?"

"I do indeed. Sergeant Kelleher gave me extensive lessons in it and its variations."

With that at least keeping him busy, you leave your armor and head for the bathroom. You're mildly paranoid of cameras, but after what you said before you're not about to eat your words. You undress and grab a shower without incident, though you still keep a wary eye out for Jeeves. Thankfully, he never appears.

With a towel around your waist you make your way back into the bedroom to find a glass of purple liquid awaiting alongside a set of nightclothes.

"I do hope everything is to your liking," Jeeves says, hovering about you as you pull on the fresh clothes. It's a nice change, and a testing sip from the drink makes you smile.

"Everything and more, Jeeves," You say as you take a seat on the overly plush chair and idly begin draining your glass. "So, why is everyone afraid of Father Mikel?"

"Father Mikel? Why, I have nothing but respect for the man! I do not know what malicious rumors you may have heard, but I can attest to his good character," He informs you with vindictiveness, and you begin to think Jeeves has only seen him OUTSIDE of combat. It also means, again, you're being stonewalled. Great. Already, things are starting to feel like home.

"Wake me at 0800 tomorrow," You tell him as you finish your drink and stand. "Or earlier, if I'm called for."

"Of course, sir. Very good, sir."

Killing the lights, you more or less collapse onto the bed and tumble into sleep.

You sleep better than you have for the first time in... well... you're not really sure, actually. Perhaps it's simple fatigue, the drink, the meds (now that you think about it, maybe combining those two was a bad idea), or all of the above, but once your head hits the pillow you're out like a light.

You can make out shapes and the faint murmur of voices, but nothing you can really latch onto. The sensation and feelings of old places you don't remember, or maybe don't want to remember.

Then, in the distance, you see a clear figure. Olive armor, golden visor shining, lasrifle slung over their back. He's waving you closer.

You start forward hesitantly, uncertain of what's going on.

"What is this place?" You ask them, looking around you.

"Your head," They reply in a voice you know but can't place. The distortion of the helmet they're wearing doesn't help. "A real mess, too. I'm disappointed in you, Mikkey."

"Who the hell are you?" You ask him, reaching out to him.

"A friend," They reply, but as you go to touch them they begin to fade away. "I'll be around, from time to time."

Then you wake up to an alarm.

Groaning, your hand swings out and you smack the source of the noise. However, the object actually gives way under your impact and you hear something bounce.

"Didn't hurt," You hear Jeeves whimper.

"Guess I'll head to the mess hall," You plan aloud.

"A splendid idea, sir," Jeeves adds.

"Will you be joining me?"

The servo skull seems to pause mid-air and looks over, tilting ever so slightly.

"Sir?" He asks, uncertain.

"Would you like to come along?" You ask. "It's your choice."

"You would ask...?" Jeeves seems beside himself at this revelation, going silent for a few moments before nodding so fast he ends up doing a small flip. "Yes, yes, sir! I would be happy to accompany you!"

Smiling at his obvious delight, you hold the door open for him and with that the two of you take off. You get a handful of stares as you make your way to the elevator, servants or freshly awakened crewman being scared to death by the cheerful talking servo skull. You try to keep a straight face, but you can't help but enjoy his antics ever so slightly.

Before long you're back in the mess hall, where a reasonable number of people are gathered and eating. Without Christina there you're offered no special treatment, but that's fine by you. That just gives you more time to watch the crowd gape and stare at Jeeves as he bobs to and fro, chatting with anyone that can remember they can do so. By the time you reach the counter, the servo skull and Marbo are already merrily talking with one another.

"Oh, Grox steak and eggs," Jeeves sighs wistfully... somehow. "Now those were the days."

"And you were my best customer!" Marbo chuckles. "But look on the bright side. You've lost so much weight!"

Then the chef turns to you and grins.

"Oh, not too much," He shakes his head. "I thought Lady Massey had scrapped him long ago. Always good to see an old friend again."

"Likewise, sir," Jeeves nods happily.

With your meal in hand you move on to find a table, and see a few friendly faces amongst the bunch.

"This way, Jeeves," You call over your shoulder as you head off to a quiet corner to eat at. Even with the morning rush you manage to find something, and with your servo servant hovering about no one seems to object.

"Is something the matter, sir?" Jeeves asked, sounding uncertain again. "If this is because of me, I can-"

"It's nothing like that," You assure him. "I'm simply observing. An experiment, if you will."

"An... experiment, sir?"

"Yes. Just wait and see."

"Of course, sir. I await with baited breath."

As you look over the crowd you see various types and groups, from all kinds of places. The veteran armsmen, close but not too close to the recruits still adjusting. Eric and the other pilots, shooting the shit and remembering past flights. Simple crewman, chatting about this and that. An odd group, on an strange ship, commander by an even stranger captain. Fitting, you suppose.

You start on your meal posthaste, devouring it with a speed you've come to hone over time. Or so you think. As you eat, alone to your thoughts, you go back to the dream you had last night. Already most of it is all but forgotten, but it still seemed so strange. Who was it? Was it... one of the others? Dan?

Someone clears their throat and you look up from your meal to find Roxy staring at you, brow raised and tray in hand.

"So, what?" She asks, plopping down without asking. "The first day you come busting in, all chest pounding and speech giving, and now you're a loner with a creepy servo skull?"

"I take offense to that, madam," Jeeves answers, to her obvious surprise. "I am not 'creepy.'"

"I like watching people," You explain. "Its a fine gentleman's sport, isn't that right Jeeves?"

"Quite right," He quips.

"And that concludes the experiment," You announce, though that seems to only add to the sergeants confusion.

"O...k...so, I think I found out something as well," Roxie hesitantly tells you.

"Oh?" You ask.

"Yup," She nods. "You're an weird one, LT. Lucky for you, there's a lot of us to go around."

"Pish posh," Jeeves shakes his body. "Nothing but outstanding, normal citizens of the Imperium here."

Both you and Roxy stare at the servo servant for a few moments before breaking down into extremely mature snickering. The sergeant manages to recover well enough, though, and soon regards you with a coy smile.

"So, have you heard anything?" She asks. "About the mission, I mean."

"Damn," She mutters. "I was hoping for some sorta snippet from her new number two."

"My job's to give my body as cover, not advice," You clarify, to her mild amusement.

"Sounds like what we're supposed to do," She says. "What makes you so different?"

"Your job is to shoot the enemy in the face and go home. My job is to get shot for the Inquisitor, and let Jeeves here tell the next guy how I died," You explain, signaling to your companion.

"Quite right," He says when Roxy stares.

"I'd heard we had something odd going about the ship... but I didn't think it was something like you," She gives an embarrassed smile. "Not that there's anything WRONG with you."

"Certainly, miss," Jeeves replies with a hint of dryness.

"Aaanyways," She turns back to you. "Have any plans after the briefing, LT?"

"Oh, don't get all panicked on my account," She scoffs. "I was just wondering if you wanted to join me and the rest of Alpha on a run through The Gauntlet. We could use the extra practice, and I thought you might like the challenge."

"The Gauntlet," Jeeves sighs. "Now THAT brings back memories. Painful ones, mind you, but memories all the same."

"Does this Gauntlet get me yelled at by the medic for straining myself and glared into submission by my new boss?" You ask her, sighing. "Cause if so, I'll have to pass."

"Don't be a baby," Roxy teases, grinning. "You only get hurt if you're bad, and if that's it then you SHOULD feel bad. It's not that harsh, really. Just a training sim, with the highest ranking squad getting bragging rights."

"And it includes various assault servitors, select armsmen, obstacles, and turrets that attempt to keep you and your team from reaching a flag at the end of it all," Jeeves explains. "If memory serves only one has died, but numerous injuries have occurred."

"Hey, that's not right!" Roxy says. "The medics brought that guy back. He doesn't count."

Even though she makes it sound SO desirable, you're not so sure about throwing yourself back into bodily harm so soon. Still, it's been a while since you've shot something as well.

In the end, you decide...

>Pass.

Even with a good night's sleep on a luxurious bed, you're not sure you're able to take on something like that so soon. Though Roxy looks hopeful, you shake your head.

"This is just my second day," You say. "Give me some time, let me settle in, and I might then."

"Oh," She replies, disappointed but at least able to hide it. Mostly. "Yeah. I gotcha. No need to go getting yourself killed on my account."

"I'm glad we're on the same page," You offer, finishing your caffeine. "And now I'll just have to wait and show my stuff out in the field."

"That'll be a sight," Roxy grins. "Don't leave a girl hanging, LT."

With food disposed of and Jeeves in tow, you head off to find the briefing room. With your floating companion to guide the way you don't even have to ask for directions, simply following him as he goes.

Before long you've reached a large ornate door with an armsman on either side, both of whom snap to attention when you near. You salute them both before pressing inside, finding the place empty. In it are a number of tables and chairs centered around a projector of some sort, though currently it's deactivated. The chairs seem comfortable enough, so you pick one at random and begin to wait.

You check the time and see there's still almost half an hour remaining, and as time drags on you prop your feet up. Then, as you grow increasingly more bored, you start counting the ceiling tiles; a trick you picked up after you were recovering from your leg.

You get to eighty four before a boot slams on the ground behind you. You tense, but manage to keep from making a fool out of yourself. Instead, you shoot forward before turning around, hand resting on your hellpistol as you look for a pistol.

To your chagrin, you find it rather easily.

In the form of one let down looking Vincent, face twisted in confusion.

With no serious explanation coming to mind, you tell him the first thing that comes to mind.

"He followed me home," You tell him.

Vincent looks between you and Jeeves before chuckling and rubbing the servo's head.

"Do me a favor and look after him for me," Vincent says. "He saved my ass once, back in the day."

"My, my; you HAVE gotten old, dear boy," Jeeves notes.

"Oh, fuck off, you," The commander growls, tossing him into the air. However, seconds alter Jeeve's has regained his balance and continued through the air, humming a tune.

It's not much longer before the next group trickles in. Mikel and Eric, Alpha, and finally Melodi and Leo.You greet them all in turn, and virtually all of them greet Jeeves with open arms. The only exceptions are Alpha Squad, who seem to know as much about him as you do. Now all that remains is Delmar and Christina herself.

Everyone is quietly guessing what they'll be going against, ranging from Orks to something called a Necron. Thankfully, it's a short wait, and not long after you hear the door open once more and the room goes silent as heads turn.

Sure enough, Christina appears in the doorway with Captain Delmar in tow, gold cloak ever flowing.

"Good morning, everyone," She greets with a smile. "I hope you all had a good-"

She's passing you and then freezes, slowly turning around to fully face you. Or more specifically, the thing you're currently petting like a house cat.

"Touching," Christina says, crossing her arms. "And how many people has he seen today?"

"Oh, you know... a few..." You shrug.

"One hundred sixteen," Jeeves answers.

"Not helping," You murmur.

"Sorry, sir."

"I..." Christina sighs and shakes her head, looking from you to Jeeves. "I'll deal with BOTH of you later. Do you think you can keep yourselves contained in the meantime?"

You give a nod and force Jeeves to do the same. Although far from looking pleased, she turns and continues on toward the display with Leo joining her.

With a few words of encouragement to Jeeves you settle in for things to kick off. As everyone takes their seats the lights die down and the projector groans and clicks. With a heavy kick from Melodi it quiets, soon followed by an image of a planet appearing. It's an ugly hunk of red and orange, with mountain ranges and deserts seemingly being the only two types of terrain it has. Only the occasional group of clouds breaks up the monotony.

"Dwinos," Christina begins. "A small mining world, sporting a population of less than a thousand. Previously, it was planned for serious expansion, but an increase in Ork activity, and the arrival of the splinter fleet, put those on hold. At the time of colonization a number of alien species were discovered, but all of them low enough on the good chain to be of little concern. There were, however, the remains of a number of species that seemed to have simply died out. Nothing substantial came from research, and eventually interest died out. All told, a rather boring planet."

Everyone waits patiently for the inevitable 'but' and are rewarded for their efforts.

"Despite no serious findings, I decided to stick an agent down there to monitor the mining operations as they unfolded. As of a month ago, they dropped out of contact and my agent's emergency beacon was activated. However, no sort of message was added to it. Currently, we're going in blind."

"Let me guess," Vincent sighs. "They dug too deep and got neck-deep in 'Cron."

"A valid guess," Leo nods. "But there have been more Dark Eldar sightings than Necron in this sector. Perhaps a slave raid?"

"Give me an Ork to shoot any day," Roxy adds. "I'm done with claws and teeth for a while."

"As I said, we're not exactly overflowing with information," Christina says, silencing them all with a pointed stare. "All I can say for certain is to expect trouble, but I suppose that goes without saying. Full load-outs, all around, and be ready to go underground. Because of the unknown, I'm preparing two companies of armsmen to assist us; one going in, with the other in reserve. I'm hoping we won't even need the first, but we all know how that usually goes."

"Delmar does the flyin', we do the dyin'," Vincent grunts, though he doesn't sound too torn up about it.

"We'll start with the capitol, find my agent-or at least his beacon- and settle this all in time for lunch tomorrow," Christina smiles. "Any questions?"

To the boss, "What's your team's going track record for these sorts of things? Professional interest."

>Ask something.
"What's a Necron?"

I don't think we've ever heard of one IC

You hold up a hand and Christina gives you a nod to speak.

"Aside from what we have on the ship, are we looking at any other kind of support?" You ask, and get a pleasantly surprised look from the Inquisitor.

"Sadly, no," She says. "There's a small PDF garrison in the capitol, but I wouldn't put money on it being much use."

"Well," You continue. "If it were Orks, we'd have heard the yelling. Eldar, the screaming. Nids... yeah. I have no idea what a Cron is, but it doesn't sound fun."

Everyone seems to stare at you like you just proclaimed yourself Emperor.

"Oh, right," Christina sighs, as if chiding herself. "Leo? The short version, if you will?"

"The Necron are a highly intelligent race of machines bent on nothing less than galactic-wide genocide of every living being in existence. Very few survive an encounter with them, and fewer still in great numbers," The savant answers.

You take this new information in silence, and when he's finished you have one last question.

"Can we kill them?" You ask.

"With enough firepower, yes," She nods.

"Good enough for me," You say, getting a snort out of Vincent.

It seems everyone has done this song and dance many a time, and with another nod from Christina everyone begins to take their leave. Then you go to stand.

"Not so fast, Lieutenant," She calls, and when you look back she's smiling. "Or you, Jeeves."

"Oh, bother..." You hear the servo servant grumble.

Good run, everybody. I hope everyone else had as much fun as I did. I'm not sure if I'll be able to run again tomorrow, but I'll try and put forth the effort.

Any questions/suggestions/complaints before I leave?

necrons will be too predictable.
Humanity is our own worst enemy, especially if shiny xeno-artifacts are involved.
Like a Halo Device

A Halo Device, huh? Wonder what that would entail...

NOW THE GATE HAS BEEN UNLATCHED, HEADSTONES PUSHED ASIDE...

She's somewhere between a three and a four. She'll walk away on good terms when it suits her, and screw over xenos when it suits her.
