If you go with alcohol = poison, Wood Elves get immunity from (natural) poisons it kind of works. I still go by the rule of thumb that if it ODs a human, a Dwarf can drink twice as much of it.

>>32017282
Ah, that makes sense. I kinda like the idea of that for a campaign (a XO who's really shit and your party picks up the pieces leaving him/her to drown her sorrows at the worst possible time, just before a pirate attack/ambassador talks/etc)
>>
>>32017334
I bet wood elves would only drink wood alcohol. Humans can't handle it, so that just feeds into their elvish narcissism.

Dwarves have terrible drinking tolerances compared to elves.
A dwarf lifespan is 400 years, and by that age, an elf is just getting seasoned in the tavern, since they can live to be 700 years old.

Usually if anyone cracks wise, they make them crack wise until they hate it, or from stories I hear.

Someone whistles too much? Lock them in a locker and tell them they have to sing every time some puts a coin in the slot.

Someone day dreaming out the window? Tell him to hug each tree that was in view of the window he was staring out of.

I'm just imagining poor fuckers on run sounding off to EIEIO.

You clear your throath, as you slowly bring down you mug of beer and eyeball the Captain for a moment. She is clearly shitfaced, and while you aren't the worst sailor to ever lay eyes upon, you guess that most of this is the rum talking. And boy, since she downed more than half the bottle by herself, a lot of talk it is. Nevertheless, you didn't make it to First Mate by being helpless in times of crisis, and you decide - despite your own considerable measure of inebriation - that it is time to act and sort this out.

"Aye, Cap'n, always have and will, no worries, I know." you respond, trying to sound appeasing.
"But, it's getting late, aye? How about we get back on board and inspect the bilge?"

She protests only mildly, but then picks up on your not-so-subtle suggestion to get under the deck and fool around in the dark of the cargo hold. At least, that is what you tried to convey, hoping that'd make it easier to get her to come with. It does. You hoist her arm across your shoulders and walk out of the tavern, after dumping an appropiate amount of coin, and make for your ship.

The night has saltwater, bread and bacon, milk and cool wipes in store for your captain. Not that she needs to know right now. You hope she passes out in between, so you can shove her in her bunk, maybe grab a bite yourself, puke over the rails, before you call it a night yourself. But after last time's run, your crew and her really deserved this night of debauchery.

As you approach the ship, strung up to the wharf, with the aft spring taut as the sea is anything but still in the breeze, you look at her again. Maybe you shouldn't be so forgiving and caring with her. Just then you realized she has actually passed out and is drooling on your shirt.

[ ] Go on ...
[ ] Try to wake her up. Cold water will do it.
[ ] Just stuff her in her bunk as-is, her morning hangover be damned.

For a moment you ponder splashing her face with some cold seawater, but you feel your own intoxication taking it's toll. As the idea of waking her up runs through your slow mind, you realize how much effort that might be and decide to make this quick. Your drag her up the boarding plank, across the main deck and down the narrow hallway. Considering your incapacited finesse of motion, you just grab her under the arms and drag her for the last bit.

Eventually you bump into her cabin, butt first, and haul her limp body into the bunk. Absentmindedly, you pull her boots off, leave them where they fall, and drag her jerry over. Thank the seven seas it had been cleaned and emptied before you reached port. You toss a towel somewhere near her head and pull the linen blanket half over her, then you leave the room.

Stumbling down the hallway again, you return to the main deck, and breathe in the salty, fresh and cool air. The longer you are outside, the more your head is clearing up. The former idea of puking over the rails ism, despite the rocking motion of the ship, losing itself in the distance.

[ ] Call it a night. May the morning be merciful.
[ ] Stay up for a bit more, enjoy the sea, smoke a pipe of those fresh herbs you got in port.
[ ] Make yourself puke over the rails regardless.
>>

There is a common (lewd) dark-skinned elf girl pic. She seems kinda simillar- bar ears. I guess people are starting form a head-canon of anime girl = elf girl.

You stand there for a moment, and while you ponder your options, you stuff your pipe. As the night quiets down around you, and the sound of the sea is slowly replacing the sound of the sailors, pirates, whores and wenches, you feel oddly at peace. Drunk, but at peace. Peaceful enough to put the pipe away, saving it for the morning, should you suffer from otherwordly headaches. Just postponed, not forgotten, you tell yourself.

You lick your lips, tasting the sweat and sour aftertaste of the beer, with a hint of stinging acid from a suppressed burp. Although your stomach has clamed down when you let Mother Sea do her work, you still think about letting it all out to get the alcohol out of your head. You step to the rails, take a deep breath and try. Two fingers in your mouth, you clench your eyes shut and try to dangle your funny bit back in your throat.

"Jacobs!" bellows a deep voice behind you. That ... sounds like that guy you and the Captain slung cards with just a few hourglasses back. He lost, you remember hazily. No sleep for you, it seems.

[ ] Finish the puke, then address the man.
[ ] Abort the puke and face the man down at the pier right away.
[ ] Abort the puke, but pull out that pipe again before facing him.

"Just a moment!" You shout back, then shove those fingers in there. You can feel nothing at first, just the slime of your saliva on your fingers, then your throat and stomach contracts and a jet of lukewarm, yellow-ish fluid shoots out of your mouth and lands in the water below. You blink some tears from your eyes, spit out whatever mouthful of vomit you had left, then stretch.

You feel horrible and relieved at the same time, then wipe your mouth (and beard) off with your shirt-sleeve. As you walk over to the other side of the deck, you pull out your pipe, stuff it between your lips and light it. The blueish smoke slowly creeps up, only to be distorted by the breeze once it leave the protection your body gives from the wind.

"Havin' a rough night, eh, First Mate Jacobs?"
"I reckon the Marlin steak had seen better days is all, Mr. ... Collins?"
"Colling. The name's Colling. I want'a see your Cap'n. Lost a lot of coin with her t'night, and I'd like a rematch."

You take a drag from the pipe again, and feel calm and more and more in control of yourself. The dull humming of the alcohol becomes more background than foreground, and you can see that Colling doesn't seem to aggressive. Just a certain shade of unhappy. The two men with him - sailors from his ship, you remember vaguely - do not seem to be too agitated either.

[ ] Offer to convene in the morning. The Captain is unavailable.
[ ] Offer to see if she can be woken up. Back to the cold water plan here.
[ ] Tell him money lost is money gone and he should take it like a man of honour. Another day will come.

You blow a circle into the wind - at least you try. It kind of starts like one, but then the breeze shuffles it all up. You hum to yourself, mildly disappointed, before you address Colling. Partially because of the herbs, partially because you are getting tired, you radiate a certain level of calm that could easily be confused for confidence. You hope, at least.

"Mr. Colling, not to expense lessons of life at such a late hour, but money at the gambling table is money lost as soon as you put it down. Only what you take home is yours. Now, while I am sure the Captain will have some time in the morning, we're leaving port before noon - don't throw good money after bad money and bet on that rematch."
"Don't think you heard me a'right, Jacobs. I wasn't asking for no rematch, I told you I want one."
"Alas, Mr. Colling ... our wishes are fulfilled as the seas see fit. Tonight will not be the time for it. Will be happy to see you in the morning, though."
"If you leave this port before I get my rematch, you can cross the Carribean off your friendly waters list."
"T'is personal, isn't it?"
"Morning hours, Jacobs. Make sure your Cap'n's awake or I'll wake her myself."

He turns around, followed by his men. You take another drag from the pipe and follow his steps into the dark, until you lose sight of him.

[ ] Call it a night. See what the morning brings. Surely he won't try anything in a sanctioned port.
[ ] Wake up some of the crew, set up night watch. They'll hate you for this, for sure.

AND

[ ] Try and get the Captain to sober up tonight so she's better in the morning.

You are torn between the choices, but ultimately settle on waking up deckhands Porter and Kent, while letting the captain rest. She gets to sleep it off - and you will do so, too - but the ship and crew should be safe for the night. You don't reckon Colling will try anything here, but you have a bad feeling about the guy.

>PERSPECTIVE SWITCH

You are SENIOR DECKHAND KENT, and you are being woken up by a obviously drunk First Mate Jacobs. He shakes you from a pleasant dream about that one wench at the tavern, and you grunt at him, proclaiming that you are awake.

"Lissen up, Kent, Capn' played carss 'n pulled major coin, an' the guy, Mr. Colling wansit back. Could be he's sennin' some guys over t'night. I wantchu 'n Porter up on deck, 'til the mornin' ssun, and keep an eye out, aye?"
"Jacobs, you're pissed."
"Yah, 'n what about it? Keep the ship safe while I sleep this off."

Grumbling, you rise to your feet and fetch Porter, a young guy you picked up last year. He's grown on you, making himself usefull wherever he can - he's still green behind the ears, but a good soul. You step onto the deck and take a deep breath.

"So ... what do we do, Kent?"

[ ] Send Porter to the crow's nest, have him look for anything that's coming from afar. And have him check the "Dirty Daisy", Colling's ship.
[ ] Keep Porter with you on the main deck, in case you need someone to have your back.
[ ] Set up post with Porter on the steering deck aftern and pull in the boarding plank for the night. Might look odd for anyone observing.
[ ] Ask him for his ideas - might as well see what the lad has learned.

Sounds good. If he just pissed off Colling, odds are his ship is in just as much danger as this one.
If you need to raise the alarm, stand nearf the bell or keep a bell handy.

You grunt, spit over the rails and adjust your belt. The boarding sabre in the sheath rattles against your pants, where leather has reinforced the thighs, and you put on your best "man at sea" face.

"Get up in the crow's nest, Porter. Grab a spyglass, and see if there's any life on the Dirty Daisy. She's the three-master, with the lady at the bow who's hanging her tits in the wind. When you see something other than a nightlight and a boed guard, lemme know."
"Aye, aye, Kent!"

With swift motions, Porter jumps into the rope and climbs the rigging. You remember the days when you were that young - and nimble - as you pat your well deserved belly. You still have the arms to break a kid like him in half, but youreckon, despite your years, he'd beat you up the rig without breaking a sweat.

It's still in the middle of the night, and most of the harbour's activity has died down. Not so bad, you think to yourself. Makes it easier to pick out any oddities. You wander across the deck, check the bell at the main mast, and begin a slow patrol walk. As you do your rounds between the two masts of the "Lisbette", you cannot help but wonder what kind of trouble a man like Colling might spell.

There are rumours that he's in bed with the Blackrock Pirates, but nothing substantial. Others say, he knows people at the Admirality, and has almost free reign, miraculously avoiding their parol ships. Could just be luck or bribes, though. Regardless, the name Colling is a name that comes up once in a while, and not just in this port. Probably a bad man to upset.

As you are in your thoughts, you suddenly hear Porter.

"I ... I think there's something going on, Kent. Want me to keep an eye on it or come down and tell?" He shouts from up there. Smart kid, doesn't shout out what he's seeing, so no one's the wiser.

[ ] Tell him to get down and give his rapport. He'll be back up fast enough.
[ ] Let him watch for more, while you pull in that boarding plank.

You itch to call the kid down and let him spill it right now, but you figure, first things first - also, let him get the full picture. You take a quick jog across the wood, reach portside and pull the plank in. The crafty sailor you are, you losen up the strings a bit, and feel the Lisbette give a little way from port, putting a good 6 feet between her and the wharf.

"I'll come up, keep your eyes peeled!"

You shout up, and then climb aloft yourself. With your paws, the rigging responds favourably, as you move with the shifting ship, anticipating the waves rise and tide. You may not be the rig monkey Porter is, but you climb smart. And smart can be fast, too. Eventually, you reach the crow's nest, where Porter is staring off into the distance.

"I think I just saw a gang of four and Colling, then they left for port. Had their steel strapped in, too."
"Yah, well, that fits a certain bill, kid, and I really don't want to see that one paid out. What did you think, where they up to trouble, or just going for a walk.
"A walk, at this time of the night? Tavern's almost died down, sir."
"Right, lad. You saw the show, tell me what you feel like."
"I really couldn't tell from this distance. Sorry."

[ ] Take a look yourself. Maybe you can find them.
[ ] Decide to play it safer than sorrier and wake up some more of the crew.
[ ] Relieve Porter and take over the lookout, telling him to be on deck in case you need him to sund the bell.
[ ] Let it be. You're not at war here, and Colling wouldn't start something in a port under the Concordial Pact.

You pat the kid's back and send him back down the rig, grabbing the spy glass yourself. Instantly, you extend it and scan the night. It is dark out and hard to see much, but you make out that the Dirty Daisy has her boarding plank up, and there is light in Captain's chamber. You look a while longer, and there's someone - or more - moving. In thought, you pull out some chewing tobacco, and shove in your mouth, pondering the situation.

"Porter, get me Taylor, Jake and Johns on deck, strapped." you let the kid know, as he's halfway down the rig. He responds in affirmative and disappears under deck.

As you scan the area again, this time following the portline, you see a small boat with four figures sliding through the waters, close to the piers. Lights out, slow progress. They seem sneaky and you don't like it.

You decide to keep looking. The four men in the boat must mean that Collings either stayed behind or left one of his men to do something else. Good thing you're not bad at counting (as long as it stay within the nine digits you can count with). You follow the boat, until it takes a turn and disappears behind a cargo barge. Still looking for it, it does not reappear on the other side. Either, they threw up rope onto the barge or strung up on the other side of the wharf. You keep looking, but nothing else happens.

Down below, Porter has the three men you asked for with him. One of them, Johns, looks mighty sleepy, yawns and stretches. Taylor just walks over to the starboard rails, leans against them and lights up a pipe. They all look around, mildly alarmed but relax when they see no immanent danger.

You check back at the Dirty Daisy, but the lights are off now, so there are no shadows to track. On the ship there is no one but a bored guard, sitting on the steering deck. Evidently, he is smoking a cigar or something like it.

[ ] Join the men below, sending Porter back up. Explain what's what.
[ ] Let them be for the moment, maybe you can spot something else.

While you are almost on your way down the rig to get the men to be more alert, you figure you should expand the picture before you do so. The spyglass up and scanning the last known locaton of the outboat, you actually see it reappear from behind the barge, carrying one man only. He is making back for the Daisy. On deck of the three master, you can see deck hands now, pulling in the string, setting her lose.

[ ] Something's afoot. Alert the ship.

You swing your legs over the crow's nest and climb down the rigging, taking the spyglass with you. Grabbing a new batch of chewing tobacco, you spit out the old batch over the rails and stand at the starboard rails, putting the Daisy back in your augmented sight.

"Men, we have a mild problem here. The Cap'n played cards with the wrong crowd, one unfriendly man you may have heard of, Colling. Cap'n won, Colling lost, and he wants it back. Now, we don't want to jump to conclusions here, but ... I spotted a boat doing funny stuff in the night time water, and the Daisy is moving. So ... have your steel at the ready. Might be nothing. Might be a rough night."
"Yah, well, crud, Kent. Dinn't sign up for some fine stabbin' inna night."
"Noted, Jake. We'll have a chat with the Cap'n in the mornin'."

The men grumble, but become more awake - or try to. Taylor stays put at the rain, puffing away on his pipe. Then, there is a splash, portside. "What was that?", Jake says out loud and walks over to the rails.

"Waahhh!"

You gaze over to Taylor, only to see him being pulled over the rails and hear him splash a second later. You are already drawing your cutlass, as you see two men swiftly climb over the railing, weapons drawn.

[ ] Shout. Engage them while they are still getting their bearing.

"Get 'em!" you shout, as you dash for the bell. Grabbing on to the rope around the mast, you literally swing yourself around and pound the bell handle. The resounding metal clang echoes across the water, over and over again. At the same time, Jake and Johns cross swords with the dripping wet, black clothed assailants.

"Holy shit, Kent, what should I do?" comes the frightened question of Porter from the crow's nest. At the same time, a third man is coming up portside, with a mean cutless between his teeth. He isn't coming for you - he is eyeing the door below deck and to the Captain's quarters.

The knife in your hand, blade between your fingers, you take aim. The third boarder looks at you across his shoulder, but starts his dash towards the door. You throw now, or he will be inside in the next blink of an eye.

You don't have much time to aim, but you are quite good with a knife. You pull your arm back, lean into it and fling the blade forward. Of course, the boarder tries to dodge, but you account for it and aim a little lower. The piece of steel flies, and hits him, penetrates deep into his right shoulder blade. He screams as he stumbles forward, stumbles, tried to flip around to pull the knife out of his back. You push towards him, sword drawn.

And then, a blade protrudes from his chest, and he spits out blood, gargling, bubbling. The blade turns inside him, and he is being pushed forward. Jacobs stands behind him, emerging from the ship's inside. He looks rough.

>PERSPECTIVE SWITCH

You are FIRST MATE JACOBS and you were one of the first to heed the bell. Naturally, since you knew beforehand trouble might come your way. You are still groggy, albeit a little more clear in the head, and you are both tired and unhappy with the general situation. As you press up the stairs to the deck, the bloodied back fo the boarder gives you a clean target, and you jam your sword right through him. Pushing him of your weapon, you step on the deck, while the rest of the crew below stirrs and comes out of their bunks.

You spot Jake and Johns in their fight with the two boarders left, but you figure they can handle it. These are well trained men - even injured, the ambidextrous Jake is still a threat. He proves that, right then and there, as he finally overpowers his opponent. Steel meets steel, a feint follows a jab, and then Jake cut his cheek, then his chest, and then ... pierces his heart. The man coughs, clenched his jaw and stumbles backwards - over the rails.

You take a deep breath and open up, loud: "KENT, RAPPORT!"

Your head rings and a headache surges up as you yell the orders. Your crew is still in the process of waking, but one after another follows suit.

You snort and watch Porter slide down the main mast, taing over the bell. He rings it, and more and more of your crew come out. They quickly form a circle around the last boarder and he drops his steel. Johns grunts and prepares to stab him. Lethally.

As the situation unravels, you see the Daisy light up in the dark of the port ahead. She is turning towards the Lisbette, and from counting the lights, there is a good chunk of people topdeck. You know how I feel about you captain, we've done this hundreds of times. You get drunk and spill your heart, I reciprocate, then in the morning you forget all about it and go back to normal. You're too proud to admit you love anything but grog and I'm too stubborn to grovel. I love you captain, but for now it'll never be.

*pick her up, put her in bed*

If only the circumstances were different, I'd treat you like a queen.

"Johns, STAND DOWN! Get that guy below decks and tie him up something nice, we'll have questions in the morning!"

Johns stops himself, splitseconds away from impaling the man and clocks him into the temple with the pommel instead. The boarder slumps onto the deck, where one of your men grabs him, pulling him off and inside. The rest of the crew disperses, with Kent taking over his share of the riggers.

The Lisbette quickly gains speed, as you focus all the available crew on getting her into the wind and you plow forward, deeper into port. Your alarm bell has woken up some others, and you can see night lights atop decks. There is a crowd building. As you try to get out of this mess, you suddenly feel a hand on your shoulder.

"Jacobs. Whassisallthis..?"

The Captain has woken up.

"Alright, Cap'n, your choice. You can either call this our wedding party, or Colling's trying to get his tonight. Asked him nicely to take it like a man and try for you in the morning, but he doesn't seem to like that. We are plunging into port, trying to get some cover and ... and you should probably get to Harris behind the wheel for now. I got this."

She smiles at you, then rubs her face. But, your captain is not exactly one to just roll with it. She does, though, strutt forward to the steering deck's ladder. Maybe she will just let you sort this one out. The Lisbette now caught good wind and plows through the water. She may be smaller than the Dirty Daisy, but she is also faster and accelerates better. You see her making good way, passing the wharfs. Then, ahead of you, another ship leaves the wharf deeper in port. It is the "Swiftness", an Admirality patrol cutter. She belongs to the patrol fleet of Commodore Kellinghouse, who is the Admirality's executive organ in these parts of the sea.

[ ] Make for the "Swiftness", see if you can seek protection.
[ ] Avoid the "Swiftness", and try for the secondary exit of the port.
[ ] Keep course, passing by the cutter, deeper into port until you come into the main pool. Turn the starboard broadside towards the Daisy and wait for what's to come.

"Listen up, get'er over portside, head for the secondary exit, avoid that cutter, we don't know if they're in bed with Colling. I want those sails wide and high, and get us out of here!"

The voice of the Captain pierces the night. "And where do we go from here, First Mate Jacobs?" You look over your shoulder, and you see her leaning on the steering deck's rails, overseeing her busy ship. While you certainly saw her in better shape, there is a reason why she is the Captain. She doesn't lose her cool when in trouble, and she is damn good for morale. Even that question, as loaded as it was, made some of the man laugh, heartily. But, she has a valid question.

[ ] Head for open waters. Your bilge has supplies for a good time, and you can outrun the Daisy no problem. Maybe the Casey Archipelago, a good five days out.
[ ] You realize that you cannot run forever - especially not over some card game. Face the Daisy the next day, but head for the safety of the dark night and open sea for now.
[ ] Remember your place, and pass of the sceptre back to her. She'll know best what to do. It's her ship, after all.

"She's all yours, Cap'n. Was just keepin' 'er warm. I say, we bugger off into the night and don't dance with the Daisy. Maybe the Casey, or we just hide in the night with lights out and come back for a chat with Port Authority when the rooster shouts. What say you?" is your response. You start to feel like you could really use another pipe about now.

The Captain stretches, washes her face with some water from a bucket and then puts a foot on the rail. She smiles, still. "The Casey, mhmm? Nah, we won't run that far. We give them a chase for now, lure them into the open sea, and when the sun rises, we go full sails andrace her back to the port. Give her something to look at, but stay the distance. Don't want her to put holes into us with her light cannon from the bow. Also, get me two 12 pounders on the rear, load up some chainshot. Just in case."

You can't help but be caught by her smile. The Captain may have her moments of weakness, but she held the show together and her plans worked out. She will see your through this. All of you.

"Oh, shit."

You remember Taylor. You should be telling her.

Not a monster. All options are the same, in essence. Just the name differs. I am not that cruel.

Raeni laughs, and nods. "Yah, we'll get the louse ridden bastard. Then the plan is all set - I want the sails at half, let the Daisy catch up a little. Make it look like we're lying in bad wind, lure the fat bitch out into the waters. Then go full sail, lay 'er right into it, and come about. Be back with the sunshine. I'm sure Taylor will make it just fine."

You nod. Hasn't been the first time you lost a man - temporarily. Whoever hired with the Lisbette and Raeni knew that they were expected to be able to stand on their own two feet, just as they could expect the extended family to come for them in time of need.

You look around. Seems like the crew has it under control. They are all groggy, some guys have pillows under their eyes, but they'll be awake until morning and get it done. Kent is running around, making sure no one is slacking off, and Harris has the wheel fine.

[ ] Go to bed. See what the morning brings. (Timejump)

Seeing it as there is little for you to do now, you feel some tension off your back. You pull out your pipe, stuff it with some herbs and tobacco, then climb the ladder to the steering deck. You take the right one, as two crewmen are dragging up the second 12 pounder up there. One is already installed on the rail, with a powder keg and some chain shot nearby. Yupp, the machinery was running smoothly, and the sleepiness cast out. There would be the next day to pay for that energy. For now, you feel like you need to fathom the knots on the captain's state and how it all got this far.

You come up the deck and light the pipe as you approach the captain. She pushes herself off of the rails and meanders to aft, looking back on the port lights - and the chasing Daisy. Raeni has her spyglass up, looing out to the three master in pursuit. "Colling sure is pissed at me, Jacobs. You'd figure he'd take it with more stride." You think bac of how the game went, and what might have triggered all this.

[ ] "Well, you did make him throw his first dukat into the pot. It has sentimental value."
[ ] "You did embarass him in front of the others, pulling him over like that. He has a bad temper."
[ ] "You stepped at the table, said you had a bilge full of silk and that you can easily back your initial wager. When he found out you were bluffing BEFORE the first card, he was not too happy. You cheated your way in, Captain."

"Well, I guess he wasn't too happy that you cheated your way in. The silk you said you had in the bilge was long sold in Port Landen, and he figured you an easy mark. First time you played with Colling, and you stripped him naked, in front of the other Captains. Colling has a reputation, and ... taking losses with stride isn't part of it."

"True. But he was so smug, and I felt playful. At the end of the day, the bilge didn't matter, did it? They feel so high and elite, with their entry sums, and it actually felt great to knock 'im down a peg. But, you are right. I could have been more graceful about it. We'll get it sorted in the morning. Tonight, spirits are heated and we aren't in shape to dance with half of our crew under the weather and the other half sleepy as yard dogs. Just keep 'er steady in the wind, stick to the plan, and we'll sort this in daylight."

You ponder this all for a moment. She has gotten the ship in trouble a lot less often than out of it, and she was right. Colling and his bunch were arrogant bastards. The seas were free, and men like Colling liked to assert the opposite. Freedom was the openess of space and the liberty to do as one pleases. Serves 'em right.
