/tg/ - Traditional Games

Sorry for the postponement this week, that was all personal on my end. We *should* be back on regular schedule next week no problem.

Archives here: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Strike%20witches%201989

++

Cold rain pelts your fighter's canopy as you watch the support planes- a pair of RAF hawk trainers outfit with camera pods on their wingtip stations and matrons in their back seats take off, their light frames having no trouble with the short Barin runway, even in this weather.

The twins are already up, flying out of RAF wattisham, carrying camera equipment and data recorders for the networked combat system- it'll record everything your aircraft does and pipe it back in real time to a waiting ground unit already on station in the area. Factory reps- including Mr.Perry, the guy who had been in charge of the team in California, are on site, anxious to see realtime 'combat' data.

Powers takes off next- she's got more of a flight to get to her orbit station, well above even the wyvern's ceiling, even with her big blackbird striker's speed, there's some worry she may miss the opening parts of the dogfight. Everyone's anxious for something that's going to last, what? Five minutes, at most, you figure. Any longer than that would be an anomaly, especially with how you fly. It's made you laugh more than once. They know how this kind of thing works, and it seems silly to you that they're so excited for five minutes out of the day.

Finally, the runway clears off and it's your turn. The rest of the squadron is already in the air, in their formation on the way to the training area, and the base almost feels lonely. There's still people, of course- you can see Kenji's IJN crew cleaning out the hangar through the open doors. The weather doesn't seem to bother them at all, and the doors were left open to ventilate the building, your refueling having left the powerful odor of jet fuel hanging in the cavern's interior.

1/3 (I Think)
>>
You look up into the mirror located along the canopy bar and Merlin catches the movement, shooting you a thumbs-up before dropping her helmet's visor in place and looking back down, grabbing the handles to either side of her console for the fairly brutal afterburner kick. You gradually open the throttles from idle all the way up, listening to the now-familiar roar as they respond to the input, their howling made almost unworldly by the addition of the magic being fed to them by Merlin.

You release the brakes a second later and the fighter lurches forward, your airspeed indicator telling you of acceleration a well tuned sports car would be happy with. Not quite what a catapult can do, but still enough to get you off the Barin runway with a few hundred feet to spare. You dearly wish they'd get that crew out to lengthen it though.

“We're clear.” Merlin announces from the back, the first either of you have said since climbing in the cockpit. “Gear coming up, take heading three-three-zero true at angels twenty.”

“Three three zero at angels twenty, got it.” You respond, turning the fighter on to the specified heading and setting a gentle climb up to altitude. “Any jumbos in the area?”

“Not right now.” Merlin answers, bringing up a composite radar picture for you. Tied into every available radar system on the islands, including civil traffic, you've got full coverage out across the channel, with no civilian airliners-jumbos- to worry about. “They're trying to keep them out of our flight path and the training area is completely restricted.”

“Good.” You're a little more comfortable knowing there's no threat of running into an airliner of people. “So what do we know about this girl?” You ask, changing the subject.

2/3
>>
“She favors top-down attacks.” Merlin says, having actually studied the witch's dossier much more heavily than you. “Rosalie says she thinks a lot more like a fighter pilot than a witch, so she should be aware of energy. Her strikers are supposed to be the German Tomcat variants, but she could have swapped them out for tornadoes or even typhoons.”

That's mixed news. The German tomcat variant has the best thrust of the three, but the typhoons are next generation, and plenty dangerous, especially in a turning fight. The tornadoes would be the least threatening of the three, but represent something of a midpoint- they're not quite as fast as the cats would be, but they can turn better at lower speeds, even if just barely.

But if she favors energy tactics, she's probably going to have gone with the tomcats, you think. The big units would suit boom and zoom flying the best with their size, relative weight, and the massive Daimler-Benz jets in them.

[] We’ll go in high, and limit her chances to bounce us. If it turns to energy, we should be ok.
[] We'll go in low, and try and draw her out of her element, maybe stay in the rain and use our sensors to our advantage.

Have Merlin try to communicate with Young's gear, and see if she can't mess with the settings in her equipment - make her strikers take in more magic than needed, force her detection gear to ignore certain things and register false contacts, etc. The more problems she has to deal with mid-flight, the less she will be able to focus on us.

in SW '89, the tomcat found export success with the IJAF, IJN, Luftwaffe, and IRAF adopting the type. Most of the export models by the time of the quest have indigenous upgrade packages (with the exception of the IRAF, where it's less 'upgrade' and more 'kitbash to keep it flying')

The Luftwaffe doesn't operate too many of them, though the IJN and IJAF combined have more in inventory than the USN currently.

You decide to take it in high, beginning a gentle climb to the range complex. Merlin, if she notices, doesn't say anything, though your sensor feeds begin to expand as she brings more of the suite online- including, critically, the magic sensor.

You enter the complex at about thirty thousand feet- well above where most witches tend to cruise, and above even what you figure this girl is likely to fly at as a perch altitude. “Revenant is in the range.” You announce, indicating to the controllers nearby in the big RAF Nimrod AEW5 aircraft and the ground control team that the exercise is on.

The cloud deck's tops skim by a few thousand feet below you- the rainstorm a truly massive one that's soaking most of the English isles and northern France and Germany. Below you, the highlands of Scotland provide plenty of ground clutter- though the radar is having trouble with the storm anyway, the clouds being thick enough to interfere with the return, even from your powerful- and augmented- set.

1/2
>>
It's Merlin that spots her, just barely a distant spec skimming along the cloud tops, occasionally dipping into them enough to almost disappear before resurfacing above them. “There she is!” She calls. “Four O'clock, maybe angels twenty five. I don't think she sees us yet.”

You crane your head around, tilting your fighter on it's side to get a view. “Yeah, I see her.” You respond, noting that Merlin's playing the sensors without trying to achieve a lock- only the magic sensor is locked on her, something that you're both reasonably sure she can't detect. “She's pretty damn high up. I'm surprised she can see a damn thing through that soup.”

“She's a nightwitch, remember?” Merlin responds. “She doesn't have to see us, and our RWR won't tell us if she's detected us.”

“Smart though.” You note. “If we dive on her, she can duck into the clouds, maybe take it down to terrain. If we don't, we'll have to give up the advantage of surprise.”

[x] Bounce her. Let's see how she handles this shit.

“Alright, hold on to your ass, Merlin.” You order, snapping the fighter around and getting a slight climb going- you'd like the additional height to build up energy, every little bit helps.

This is the worst part- you're in the sun, so you're relatively sure she won't be able to see you, but at the same time, if she does, You're not in a good spot to react, being too high above the cloud deck to make it back to them quickly and in a climb. Even with the massive excess of energy the wyvern tends to have, a climb slows you down.

Less than a minute, though, and you've set up for the bounce- above and behind, enough to make one pass that will send you screaming into the rain storm and well out of sight, a classic boom and zoom. You can practically hear Merlin's breath catch as you push the nose over into a dive, bringing up guns- the computer assisted reticule appearing on your HUD.

1/2
>>
“Frank!” Merlin calls, just as the witch rolls away from your gunsight and into the clouds.

“Shit!” You grunt, opening the throttle forward, trusting the terrain following radar and the computer to keep you from flying into the mountains below as you crane your head around to try and keep her in your sights. “She saw us coming!”

“Hardly. You merely adopted the bounce.” Kathrine responds over the open channel. “I was born into it. You think you can use it against me? Please, smalltime.”

You don't reply, instead switching your attention to getting into the mountains before she gets on your tail.

“Frank! Frank she's behind us! She's closing in!” Merlin says, her voice excited. “She's between our tails! She's closing fast!”

As if to accentuate her point, a group of computer-generated tracers- courtesy of the range control computers, your fighter's avionics suite, and Young's G36 Prototype, flash by your canopy, close enough to make you glad they're only computer generated.

Well, there went the mountains.

A close-in maneuver fight with a witch is bad news. We screwed up with the bounce, but we can still win this one if we keep on even footing and use Merlin.

[x] Keep it in the cloud cover. We’ll both be on sensors, but we can fight with ours just as well as she can fight with hers.

You'd like to drag her lower, and for a minute, you keep your dive, before you think better of it. In the clouds, if you generate any kind of distance between her and you, you'll both be totally reliant on sensors- where you have parity at least, if not an advantage.

Still, right now, she's all over you, and you're forced to keep your fighter rolling through the sky, breaking left in a brutal snap turn away from another burst of rifle fire, causing Merlin to grunt with the sudden G force slamming into both of you.

The clouds are cold, bone chillingly so- you can feel it seeping through the cockpit walls. “Frank C'mon! She's still back there!” Merlin cries, and you can hear her shifting around to keep the witch in her sights through your attempts to lose her. You jerk your fighter to the right, then try another snap to the left, banking on the thrust-vectored nozzles of your jet, augmented as they are by Merlin, to help you outmaneuver the witch- to no avail- she stays firmly glued to your rear quarter, and sends another burst of rifle fire your way as payment for your efforts.

Snarling wordlessly, you slam the throttles forward to the stops and your fighter roars, the powerful turbofans unleashed. Fed nearly a hundred pounds of fuel in an eye blink, and suddenly able to access the entirety of the energy Merlin's made available to them, they slam you back into your ejection seat, opening a five hundred yard gap between you and Young in a second.

1/2
>>
“Running away?” She taunts, unable to keep up- and unwilling to try.

You don't respond, instead getting beyond visual range. “She's tracking us.” Merlin announces, quietly, as you watch a lightning bolt flash through the cloud nearby. Idly, part of your brain wonders if that's got something to do with you, then decides it doesn't matter.

“What can you do about it?” You ask, looking at your options- in this soup, it's going to come down to guns and positioning. The problem is, she's able to track you same as you can track her.

“I'm not sure. She uses her talent differently than Konstantina did. I'm not sure I can do anything about it.” She says. “And if I do, I don't think I can keep the sensors and engines running. We'd have to pick two.”

Twisting in your seat, you can just see the faint outline of the witch in the distance, still giving chase. You've got to turn back and engage, and you could simplify the whole thing by going head to head with her, but that's dicey as all hell. You're pretty sure you could afford to lose the engine power to shut down her sensors, but at the same time, that effectively locks you into a fight if you don't get her in the first pass.

[] Turn on her and make a head to head merge. You've been playing like a fighter pilot who's rational, let's see how she likes crazy.

[x] Have Merlin kill her sensors, let's see how she fights blind. (engine boost)

“Kill her sensors, Merlin.” You order, Turning the fighter around and climbing. “And stop boosting the engines. We'll be fine.”

“Done.” Merlin says, and you can feel the sudden loss of power as the magic augmenting the jets is suddenly cut off. “And she's blind now, but we'll have to move fast.”

“Fine by me. Here we go, we're gonna take her down the left side.” You respond, passing above and to the right of the witch, making a tight turn to get behind her.

Blind in the storm, Young tracks you by ear- though she's responding well enough that you're almost afraid that she's able to get something through Merlin's jamming attempts. She breaks hard to the right, forcing you to reverse your turn- she's trying to get inside of you, and without engines, you can't outrun her, so you'd have to out turn her- a tricky job, at best.

“I got you now!” You crow, gaining her tail- she's a bit far for guns yet, but you're slowly closing the gap, though you're having to use full blowers to do it, and her evasives aren't making it easy, she's throwing herself all over the sky trying to keep you from a shot- you're having to strain just to stay on her tail.

1/2
>>
“Watch out Watch out!” Merlin cries, a half second before Young viffs hard, pivoting around her waist and swinging her legs forward, leaning way back against her inertia and dumping speed and forcing you to roll over her top to avoid a collision- though Merlin's shield flashes to life between your fighter and her, intercepting any incoming rounds.

“Dominant, aren't you?” You grunt, looking back as she scrambles to make the most of her reversal.

“You're too slow, smalltime. Other girls might like it, but you gotta keep me interested.” She responds, blandly. “You're good though, I'll give you that.”

“You don't know the half of it.” You say, rolling away from her guns again, caught in a dogfight now.

“Break left!” Merlin yells, and you can practically feel the tracers cross beneath the wyvern's belly. “Frank!”

[x] Pull the stops out. We've got healwitches, we'll be fine.

You're totally defensive- and you can feel the frustration building. She's got more combat experience, she's got a hell of a family history- her dad isn't exactly unknown in the aviation community, even the USN fighter community, being noted for taking a P-61 off a carrier deck once upon a time.

But she's not you. And she doesn't have Merlin, who's warnings are getting more and more frantic- she's not able to counter this witch, and it's scaring her.

“Merlin, how are we looking?” You ask, too busy to look at your panel for fuel state and the essentials- you're having to keep your head outside the cockpit, focusing on the witch.

“We- uh. We're ok on fuel.” She says, hesitating for a second, getting her head back on the instrument panel. “No stress warnings, temperatures are all good.”

“Groovy.” You respond- Chopping the throttles back, deflecting your canards down and your thrust vectored nozzles the up, causing your fighter to go into a vertical roll- pitching up and over. Normally, this would be a kulbit, or tight diameter loop- but you intend to arrest it, and do so, canceling the roll without protest from the fighter and heading in the other direction, momentarily catching a glimpse at the surprised look on Young's face as she screams past your fighter, though she's already starting her reversal.

Not that it matters to you.

1/3
>>
With enough airspeed to spare, you pivot the fighter again, slewing the tail around wider than the nose, putting a massive amount of stress on the frame- a normal fighter, or one without Merlin in it, would have snapped in half at the attempt. The wyvern hardly complains.

With two total direction reversals in as many seconds, your airspeed should be shot all to hell- you'd probably be just above stall normally, allowing Young to get away and re-engage. Instead you've managed to preserve some, and she's forced into the defensive, deflecting away from your gunsights.

She attempts another viff, but this time you're ready, rolling over the top then deflecting away from her waiting gun, turning your head to track her as your helmet umbilical floats in the negative G of the maneuver.

Now on your tail again- she's good at reversals, you've noticed, she fires another burst, but it's rushed- if you knew her better, you'd have said it was panicked. You dive under it, dropping briefly below the cloud deck into the storm- noting that the wind's buffeting you pretty badly.

You're vaguely aware of the radio network in the background, but no call to knock it off has come through, no cancellation of the exercise. That's fine by you. Still, you're sure at this point, there's more than a few witches not sure they believe what their cameras and radars are showing them.

“Watch the mountains!” Merlin cries, though it's just a warning as you climb back into the clouds, noting they seem thinner inside, now.

“She's still with us!” She says, looking around. “You haven't lost her! She's gonna get a shot at us! C'mon Frank you gotta do something! Break Right!”

2/3 (I think)
>>
She's good, you admit, one of the best you've fought- but in this case, it's just not enough. She's used to conventional pilots, good ones, sure, but not you. Not bleeding edge air superiority fighters with full witch integration, and certainly not ones piloted by the Eagle of.. whatever the hell it is now. You seem to recall it having been changed to the Eagle of the north, but you're not sure who told you.

While you can't win an energy fight, at least not now, you're not totally defensive. You throw the fighter into a series of rolls, forcing her to mirror them to keep behind you, though she drops back a bit- enough that your options just opened up.

You throw the fighter's nose skyward once more, fully expecting Young to follow- and she obliges. You grin, chopping both throttles to idle and popping your airbrakes and spoilers wide open, brutally throwing you against your straps as your fighter suddenly stalls- exactly as you wanted it to. As it slips down- in reverse and still under control, Merlin's shield flashes to life again briefly as Young pivots- and her rifle's bolt clams home on an empty chamber.

3/4 (oops.)

You grin again, tasting copper now, and slam the throttles wide open, arresting your near vertical fall on afterburner plumes hundreds of feet long, and you settle your gunsight right over the witch.

Her shield flares to life as your computer begins to tell the story of her death- hundreds of 25mm shells, augmented by Merlin, slam into her shield, shattering it before she can move. Or, would have, were it for real.

“Splash one.” You announce over the intercom as the range controllers announce it- their computers recorded the entire thing as well.

“All participants, this exercise is over. The RAF looks forward to working with you again.” The range controller announces from his mount in the nimrod above. “That was impressive, Revenant. You too, Hauptmann Young.”

“Pfft.” She responds, forming up on your wing and looking over- she can't see you through the one way canopy, but she shakes her head all the same. “Not bad, smalltime. Won't happen again.”

Basically, a witch can blunt force trauma a gnome back onto his feet by kinda sorta jumpstarting him, using magic. Only thing is, the prerequisite for being able to jumpstart the gnome is a strong emotional bond. That's why only Minna could jumpstart Young; the others didn't have the requisite emotions.

Pretty sure Sakamoto knew how. I recall Minna trying to get her to do it instead before Sakamoto cunt punted her by saying that Young was similar to Kurt, her former lover and possible fiance. Which is part of the reason why Minna hated both herself and the idea of a joint wing; she felt she was being unfaithful and slutty for having those feeling for Young, and she didn't want any of her witches to lose someone close to them, so she attempted to deal with it by forcing Young out of the Squadron which backfired spectacularly when he rode down two flights of stairs in a wheelchair he had lovingly named the Rolling Court-martial in front of Patton in order to call her smalltime, swear at her, tell her off, and then roll away singing at the top of his longs about a flying trapeze, and she finally gave up on the NO JOINT WINGS EVER idea when she realized that her attempts were doing more harm than good.

“Probably not.” You admit. “You're damn tough.”

“Damn straight. Experience counts for a lot, squid.” She responds, looking your fighter over.

“You wanna grab a drink later? I feel like we both need one.” You say, laughing, leading your new wingman towards the pair of hawks on their southward heading.

“And a cigarette.” She says, good humor evident in her voice.

Ice and Slider form up on you next, along with the Twins, and later, Powers. The Nimrod, based elsewhere, takes a different heading, and the flight back to Barin is quiet, with only the muted roar of your jets to keep you company. Even Merlin, in the back, is quiet, though you can see her work through systems diagnostics- she's linked her main display to one of your MFDs up front. The wyvern looks fine, no displayed faults. Maybe the Chance-vought guys really did build it custom for what you and Merlin can do.

Your fuel state is by far the worst, though, and you land first, silently cursing the barin runway yet again as you approach at just above stall speed, wondering why the people that designed it hated pilots so much. Then again, with 0/0 ejection seats, it's not as big an issue, but still. You'd hate to go off the side either way.

One of the RAF ground controllers- recently arrived- directs you into the hangar, with Brigette and a pair of her SEAL witches visible on your magic sensor, all three in Strikers.

Finally, you run through your shutdown checklists and begin turning it all off, popping the canopy open with a short hiss of pressure escaping. You're tired- you always are, especially after a fight like that- but you're able to get your straps all off and stand wearily up, nodding to Merlin, who's retrieving her inflight bag from it's storage cubby behind her ejection seat and gathering the candy bar wrappers from the floor of the jet.

Brigette nods to you as Kenji walks up, eyeing him briefly before looking away, then back at you.

“Ah, baron. De other girls, they goan worry dey see you like dat.” She says, her accent almost hard to unscramble for your brain. You really need a nap.

You grunt. “They're used to it.”

“Heah. Lemme see if maman Brigette can clean you up a bit.” She offers, striding forward, her strikers thumping hard on the concrete. Behind you, you can hear the howl of landing strikers.

Still, you do take an offered seat in a folding camp stool offered by one of the IJN Striker techs, nodding your thanks as a second is set down for Merlin, who thumps into it without saying much- she looks a lot better than you do, honestly, but still worn down. She, at least, won't say anything.

“Maybe I'm too awesome for my own good?” You quip, trying for humor- it doesn't work.

“Maybe I need to have Slider sit on you.” She fires back. “Go get cleaned up, then check with medical. And I'll be checking with them later to make sure you did.”

We have to impress on her that we aren't a "normal" pilot anymore--not because of our skill, but the simple fact that we can fly so hard we start bleeding.

That's the price we pay for our magical edge, and she's going to have to accept that fact. Sooner the better.

Or the idea about Putin? Seriously, we don't need the upgrades, but getting the rest of the tomcat out would be at worst an unnecessary but otherwise good idea. Because seriously, having foreign metal objects embedded in one's skeletal structure is ALWAYS a bad thing. Even if it's purpose is good, it will invariably lead to problems.

What, that our flying breaks part of us every time we do it? You really think she needs to know that? The matrons might need to, but not Ice. She doesn't need to worry that literally every time we get into a dogfight we might die regardless if we win or not.

Not entirely correct. Fighter pilots are expected to be able to sustain 9g turns for a while, with bursts of up to 12. The suits they wear help a lot.

You look at her, frustration mounting- along with a healthy dose of anger- you understand her worrying, sure, but there's also a point at which you should expect they'd understand what's critical and what isn't, and this certainly isn't.

“Crystal.” You respond, your voice dead, betraying none of the emotions.

She pauses, her face softening. “Look, Frank, I-”

“C'mon, Merlin. Let's go get checked out and get some chow. Kenji, you coming?” You ask, turning away- after all, you acknowledged her order, so now personal conversation goes by the side. Kenji shakes his head.

“No sir, but Samantha and I had plans for lunch, if that's no trouble.” He responds.

You look down at Merlin, who's blushing a bit. “W-we did.” She confirms. “S-sorry for not saying a-anything.”

“Nah, no trouble. Let's go.” You say, walking past Ice without looking twice at her.

He nods. “Yessir, near as I can tell. Maybe see one of the witches, they might be able to help you out- “

“God damn it Frank.” Slider hisses at you. “Sargent, 'd ya mind?”

Oh Ghost, if only you could run more than once a week my life would be complete.

Not that I mind the consistent schedule mind you, far better than a certain holy messenger of masturbation.

Then why do I hear the tapping of a keyboard then feelz?

[23:24] <Dante41> Dangit Hornisse
[23:25] <MercCommand> why do you gotta string us along like that
[23:25] <Dante41> Besides, Ice already got feelz
[23:25] <feelthyHornet> The lead up and subsequent dogfight must be better than the last one
[23:26] <feelthyHornet> It would be a shame to rush it

Sorry folks, no feels tonight

Bitchtits. She just nearly got wiped by a Flanker, and he just started killing Will.

If he wants this next dogfight to be better than the last...
>>
>>32011917
You keep saying that...

You said that four updates ago.

Are we on Valve time here?

The wait. It kills me.
>>
>>32011943
But Merc saved Will by writing him in. Plus, I don't think she'd be in the condition we saw her last in.
>>
>>32011943
Dammit, so we have to wait two weeks for bitchtits and even longer for Ice feelz?

>HL3 confirmed
