The year is 1938 BCE. War has broken out between the Imperial Alliance to the East, and the Oceanic Federation to the West. Both are huge conglomerates of various nations, wanting to keep themselves from the other.

This is a new kind of war. The first kind of war to see the mass-use of magically blessed girls known as Witches against each other. Despite new advances like Machine Guns, tanks, and the magical Striker units, the worst thing to ever happen in the war has happened. The lines have stabilized.

The continent has been split in half and at the line between the two hegemonies lies a stretch of land barely five hundred kilometers wide, but hundreds of thousands of kilometers in length. Stretching in this line are rows of trenches, mines, barbed wire, and other obstacles for witches and soldiers to overcome if they want to even gain an inch of ground.

Most thought the war would be over in a year at most. You are seeing now how wrong they are. You were recruited by the Imperial Alliance to fight for them, among thousands of other Witches and countless millions of soldiers.

You are a Witch.
>>
>>32000669
Your name is Rosemary Finken. You are part of the 178th Assault Witch Platoon, Lance F. From the very beginning of your life, you were born with amazing powers of magic. That made you and the one in every hundred thousand births a witch. These powers granted you strength and abilities beyond the comprehension of normal people.

And this made you a prime target for recruitment by the Imperial Alliance Army.

It had been six months since you first arrived at the front. Your companions in Lance F, of which there is six, well five now. All of them are relatively reliable, except the Rookie. The Rookie arrived only a week ago, and is still jumpy and inexperienced. She’s definitely not long out of the Youth Corps considering that she still salutes the Guide’s picture or prays to the Guide before meals, and even recites the Guide’s Codes before she sleeps.

Heck, she still even wears pants.

All of the experienced Witches like yourself either settle for miniskirts, shorts, or just go pantless at this rate. You need your legs bare for the Striker Units to meld with you. The less cloth between you and the Striker, the less time required to prepare for combat.

You sat in the muddy trench. You made sure to keep your feet out of the dirty water pooling at the bottom. You have no idea whose blood, guts, or shit was in there and you weren’t about to find out. Next to you is the Rookie, who curiously peaked out over the trench, her face filled with anticipation and nervousness. She’s gripping her rifle like a teddy bear. She’s probably scared. At least you aren’t in your Strikers now.

What do you do?

> Reassure her

“Hey, Rookie.”

She yelps a bit, looking down at you with her pretty blue eyes. “Y-Yes?”

“Stop worrying,” you say. “The Federals keep store hours. They aren’t open yet.”

She blinks a bit, ducking down. “But- What if they…?”

“It’s fine,” you say. “What time is it now?”

She quickly placed her rifle down on the ground then reached into her breast pocket, pulling out a gilded pocketwatch. “Um… ten to seven.”

“Yeah, they aren’t going to attack until an hour from now,” you say. “That is if they attack, they usually precede it with a bombardment, then they stroll across the field, we gun them down, etcetera. You know how it works.”

She stares at you, curiously. “N-… No I don’t.”

“Well, you’ll learn,” you say. “Another thing, Rookie, I’d suggest taking off the Youth Corps moto stuff. The armband, the knife, the collar pin.” She looks at all of them as you name them off. “Federals aren’t in love with Youth Corps.”

She groans. “But I earned these, through good service to the Guide! Am I not entitled?”

You shrug, sighing. “I suppose.”

Kinda both. Most of the explicitly gay stuff is in non-anime parts of the franchise. Honestly it's been too long since I watched it for me to remember how gay some of the characters in the show were.
>>

>I thought it was just cute girls doing just cute thing while fighting aliens?
Oh it is definitely that, just some/most of the cast are blatant lesbians, and that tends to encourage the shippers to declare everyone to be lesbians.

Let's have some introspection before meeting the rest of the cast.
>>
>>32001036
Yoshika is the motherfuckin' oppai hunter, Eila and Sanya are pretty explicitly canon gay for each other, other than that its mostly just implications and yuri goggles.

>>
>>32000977

Strike Witches has some pretty severe case of the "impled but not actually shown sexual activity" syndrome, although it's limited to two of the characters.

But yeah, when they start "performing maintenance" one one another...

>>

I don't think we'll have the chance, if we do then just remember trench warfare with little girls is ripe for HEALING, not happy yuri-times.

> Write a letter home
> Break open the Rations

You decide to tear open a Quik-Eat pack. Same old junk to keep you fresh and healthy, some freeze dried apples, crusty bread, and two juice boxes, one filled with apple juice and the other filled with enough caffeine to make a racer out of an elephant, and some butter. Joy. But, it’s better than nothing. You can’t even imagine how the folks back home are faring with their V-Gardens and ration cards.

The Rookie goes back to reading the Guide’s Codebook, while you settle in and tear out a piece of paper from your notebook. You quickly ask the Rookie for a pencil, to which she gives you one. Another thing about the Rookie, always prepared for anything but that makes her slow on the march.

SW is a rarity among questing franchises in that /tg/ has actually made it straighter* than the source material, so anons are probably unleashing pent-up /u/.

Well again, SW really isn't the franchise for husbandos (I can't even remember if there's a guy with a name in the anime) so I'm not sure if this is the quest to look for it. Plus, both SW-fans and readers of GS's other quests are probably feeling kinda frustrated at their lack of lesbians and are likely to be unreasonable. Hopefully they will remain civil!

Dear Father,

Everything is going right for us at the Front. (Not really.) The enemy retreats at the sight of us when we run them down. (Not really.) We mostly face Federal Militia, just old men and young boys who haven’t the faintest idea of how to fight, let alone hold a gun. (We’ve actually faced what appears to be the Federal Marines, they fight like rabid dogs.) We’ve managed to take some ground and hold it, and as of right now I’m sure the good Lieutenant is planning the next assault even now. (We were recently forced out of our gains two weeks ago. We’re waiting for them to come to us.)

We haven’t had many casualties as a result. If you’re wondering, Lily is doing fine. She was injured recently but is recovering well in hospital. She should be back to the fight in no time. (Her leg got blown off, the same shell killed two other soldiers.) Daisy and Erika especially are eager to get back into the fight. (That’s not a lie, they’ve been doing nothing but throw rocks at random pieces of rebar, I fear for their sanity.)

Hopefully, when I have leave, I will be able to visit home to you, Father. I know you are aching to see me alive and well, and with all four limbs attached. Rest assured, I will return home.

Your loving Daughter,
Rosemary

Not what I was thinking, but I guess...
Really though, it's important to imprint in her mind that not making everyone else go mad is pretty much the #1 hardest thing about trench warfare, and she should be more worried about getting along with people than getting shot or bombed or whatever.
>>
>>32001590

> See what Daisy and Erika are up to.

You pat the Rookie on the shoulder, startling her again. “Watch the post for me, keep your head down, alright?”

The Rookie nods. “Of course.”

With that, you stand up and head down the Trench Line.

Witches are generally put in the Reserve Trench, to allow some flexibility. They aren’t in as much risk as they are in the Frontlines when there’s an attack or a bombardment, and they can certainly react when there is an such an attack, and hopefully drive away the invaders. The Reserve Trench is certainly much more well-built than the Front line, there’s actual wooden planks separating you from the dirt and mud, there are sandbags lining the tops.

Last you saw of the Frontline trench, it was literally just a depression in the ground.

You ask a passing soldier where you might find your friends. He points down the trench and keeps on going. You head down to see Daisy, along with a small crowd of soldiers all huddled around a fancy civilian radio. Erika sits across from them in an ammo pit, washing her face and brushing her hair as she admires herself in the mirror.

“Daisy,” you say. “What’s going on?”

Daisy grins happily. “Balmoral’s playing Clifford! 1-1 and five minutes on the clock!”

Hm. You forgot Daisy was a football fan.

> Talk with Erika (Topic?)

You sit down across from Erika.

Erika is a girl of sixteen, who is pretty finicky with appearances. As she said so when you first met her, “If I’m going to kill Federals, I will look good doing so.” Thusly, she doesn’t loot the battlefield for trophies like gold watches, chains, or teeth like Iris Elster does. She instead looks for care products, perfume, hair brushes, shampoo, that sort of stuff.

You remember how giddy she was when you all came upon that Witches encampment a month ago. Now she was here, washing her face in naught but her blouse and her striped panties. Often the quickest into battle next to Iris.

“Hey, Rosemary,” she says as she washes her face. “What’s up with you?”

“Just checking on you all. Remember yesterday when I found you and Daisy throwing rocks at a random piece of rebar?”

Erika hums a bit. “Uh huh…” She brushes her blonde hair back as she checks herself in the mirror. “Well, you do lots of things when you’re bored, Rosemary. That’s just the reality of it. The people who think war is nothing but constant slaughter are wrong. It’s constant boredom with the occasional slaughter.”

“Of course,” you say.

> “Why not all of it?”

You smirk a bit. “Don’t suppose you’re willing to share some of that shampoo?”

She pouts, tilting her head as she ties her hair into a neat little ponytail. “Too bad, finders keepers. If you want some, get your own.” You roll your eyes at that, to which she says, “Anyway, I saw you at post with the Rookie. That can’t be fun.”

You shrug. “She’s learning. Slowly admittedly, but it’s certainly better than nothing.”

“Sure,” she says. “If you ask me, I don’t think the Rookie will last the week. If the snipers don’t get her, it’ll be her Youth Corps moto bullshit. You know how much Federals love Youth Corps memorabilia?”

You shrug. “She’ll shake out of it eventually.” You sigh. “You visit Lily?”

“Nah,” she says. “Me and Daisy were about to head up with Iris. We can go whenever you’d like to, I certainly think there’s time.”

You nod. “Of course.” You snap your fingers, smiling again. “Also, I like that ponytail on you.”

She grins, turning her head side to side. “You think so? It looks cute, doesn’t it?”

“Sure,” you say.

> Head up to see Lily

You pat Daisy on the shoulder, getting her attention. “Come on, we’re going to go see Lily.”

Daisy pouts. “But- but- Football!”

“You can always listen to Football later,” says Erika. “Come on, you wuss.”

With that, Daisy reluctantly leaves the radio. Maybe she had some dollars on the match or something, you wouldn’t blame her. You’d certainly bet a trouser or two if it meant you could win yourself a few pounds of fresh butter or a freshly cooked goose. That’d certainly be something.

You head down the trench toward the field hospital. It’s buried into the Earth, mostly to keep it safe from bombardments. You meet Iris outside the entrance, admiring herself a fresh bit of loot: a gold tooth. She asks you, “How much you think this is worth?”

Erika says, “Probably worth some actual money, Iris, I’d save that.”

The four of you head inside. The field hospital really smells like the worst thing you could imagine: death. A youthful medic greets you all, a man named Private First Class Sawyer Hackett. “Rosemary. You come to visit Lily?”

You nod. Sawyer led you down the halls towards Lily. Sawyer was an interesting case. He was the only male actually attached to your platoon, for good reason, he was your platoon medic. Lily probably never would have gotten out alive without his quick thinking. You imagine though his pacifism might not be worth it.

Finally, you reach Lily. Her body is hidden beneath a scratchy blanket, but her face is yellowed and wrinkled from constant stress. You’d look like that too if you had to spend a few days in hospital.

“Try not to take too long,” says Sawyer as he leaves you.

You smile, sitting down next to Lily. She turns her eyes to you, groaning a bit. She doesn’t know her leg’s gone. “Hey, Lily,” you say.

> “Feeling better, Lily?”

“You feeling better?”

Lily groans, a guttural one, probably some drool hanging in the back of her throat. She swallows a bit, then says, “I think so. Can’t really feel my left leg.”

You nod, looking over at the blanket. There’s a very noticeable drop where the leg should be. You say, “I’m sure it’s just fine, Lily.”

Lily grunts. “Of course. How are you doing, Rosemary? Everything alright?”

Erika says, “We’re all doing very well, Lily. Some more than others. You remember the Rookie?”

“Oh her,” Lily nods slowly. “I must be setting a bad example.”

Iris laughs a bit. “Nah, if you’re anything you’re learning experience.”

Lily coughs, hacking a bit up spittle and bile. “God- Ugh… I’m going to be honest with you, I feel really terrible. It hurts to breathe sometimes.” She looks over at you, smiling faintly. “But I’m glad you’re here for me, Rosemary. You think I’ll get sent home?” She says that with an almost hopeful tone.

You look down at her leg, or lack there of, again.

You rest your hand on her head, smiling as warmly as you can for her. “If you do go home, send your mother my regards. I will miss you, Lily.”

Lily smiles at you, her green eyes still having that spark of life your Father always talked about. She says, “Thank you, Rosemary. And thank you guys, for visiting. It means so much to me.”

Daisy nods. “Of course. We wish you a safe return home, Lily.”

Lily nods, then shuts her eyes. You sigh, then stand up. All of you begin filing out. You however, catch Sawyer on the way out. “Need something?” he asks.

You say, “Will Lily make it home?”

Sawyer sighs, frowning. He crosses his arms and says, “You want me to be honest?” You look to see that your Lancemates have already exited. You nod. He says, “She won’t last the night.”

“Oh.” You look back down at her. She’s still resting. Hopefully she wouldn’t have heard that over some of the wounded and the doctors. “Why?”

“Internal bleeding,” he says. “The blast broke a few of her ribs along with taking her leg off. We believe that one of the ribs may have punctured a vital organ and she’s very slowly bleeding to death. Either way, she’s dying and we don’t have the time nor the equipment to help her now.” He notices your expression at that. “I- I’m sorry, Rosemary, that’s the truth of it. I know you two were good friends and-“

You hold up your hand. “No, it’s fine, Sawyer. You’re doing what you can here. But… suppose she does?”

“It would take a miracle, she may be a witch but even magic has its limits,” he says.

You nod. “Alright. Thank you, Sawyer.” With that, you leave the Field Hospital.

You meet Iris, Daisy, and Erika outside. “… so then I told the Sergeant, how’s that staying fashionable?” says Erika.

Daisy looks at you. “Hey. We were going to grab some lunch if you wanted to join us.”

You shake your head and decide later would be the time for lunch. The Sarge could probably use your help with the Strikers. You head down deeper into the reserve Trench alone down to where they keep the Strikers.

The Striker Units are kept in a section of the trench that is open to the air, command doesn’t want to risk a cave in. To keep Air Witches from the Federals from spotting them, a camo net was put up as a makeshift ceiling. Sergeant Poppy Wurger was the platoon’s de facto mechanic for now, the real mechanic was killed in a bombardment three weeks ago and his replacement has yet to arrive. Still, Sergeant Wurger worked tirelessly, tanned from working in the hot sun.

She was also playing some music from a record player you looted from a town some weeks back.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wp2Hwi9qM48

She looks over at you, lit cigarette hanging from her lips. “Corporal Rosemary, nice to see you.”

You nod. “Need any help with the Strikers?”

“Not right now,” she says. “Lily’s Striker though could use a new paintjob.” She blinks, then smiles at you. “She doing well?”

You shrug. “She’s bought the real estate, Sarge.”

Sarge’s eyes widen, then she sighs, frowning. “Ah, that’s a shame.” She gestures over to the burnt out and scorched Striker Unit that used to be Lily’s. “Well, it could still use some new paint.”

You nod. “Alright.”

You’ve known the Sarge for quite some time. She’s not particularly someone who gets attached to others. An ice queen they call her. Lily’s death, or inevitable death, probably isn’t something she particularly really cares for at the moment. She certainly was there the first time you arrived at the front, and she’s taught you everything that you needed to know.

“If I run for cover, you beat me there.”

“When we hit the ground, you better get so low you might as well fuck it.”

“Never use your bayonets. Shovels or rifle butts only.”

Those are just a few of them.

> Repaint Lily’s Striker

You grab some greys and olives along with a brush and or two and set to work on repainting Lily’s Striker.

Your Lance’s Striker Units are relatively standardized. All of them are Sturmgeschutz III Model Es, except for the Sarge’s which is an F. The difference being that your Es mean you’re stuck with a short barrel grenade launcher, while the Sarge gets what can pretty much be called a recoilless rifle. The Lieutenant meanwhile manages from a Panzerkampfwagen IV Model F2 Striker.

As Assault Witches, your job is to help support infantry, unlike other Witches whose duties can include anti-witch operations or even Air Witches who quite obviously fight in the air. Thanks to your Magical shields, you can pretty much shrug off a lot of small caliber firearms. That means its standard doctrine for infantry to advance behind you, using you as shields.

Of course, the shields have limits. You’re not particularly fond of the Federal’s love for the .50 Caliber machine guns or their 75mm Infantry Guns.

The Sarge stands over you as you paint over the burns and replace them with a fresh coat of paint. Lily would certainly like to see her Striker be good as new. You decide not to paint over where she’s nocked her Witch kills, three of them.

Sarge says, “That’s certainly looking good, Corporal.”

You smile at her. “Thanks, Sarge.” Your stomach growls as well. Damn it. “Ehehe… I don’t suppose you have anything to eat?”

She nods. “Sure.”

With that, the two of sit next to each other on the ground. It appears the Sarge has managed to acquire a fresh cooked chicken, probably Iris’ doing. You and her chew on the meat, cooked but it’s definitely cold. Could certainly do with some spices too.

She asks, “Like it?”

You shrug. “It’s good. Definitely better than the Quik-Eats.”

“Anything’s better than the Quik-Eats,” she says she chews on a strip of meat. “But, thanks for your help today, Rosemary.”

You nod. “My pleasure.”

> Check in on the Rookie

You say goodbye to the Sarge for now, it might be that time to check in on the Rookie.

As you walk down the Trench, you actually realize something.

You don’t feel anything for Lily. According to Sawyer, she won’t make the night and yet… you don’t really feel anything about that. It sure is sad, but you strangely can’t bring yourself to feel sad about it beyond thinking that it is sad.

Okay, you might be overthinking this. Maybe you’re just in shock or something.

Regardless, you arrive back at your post, only to find the Rookie sleeping like a corpse. She’s sleeping peacefully, cuddling with her rifle as it were a toy. At least her fingers are off the triggers.

You sit down next to her, curling up and resting your head on your knees. She looks relatively sound, maybe you should let her have her rest.

Still, Lily.

You lean back, sitting against the wooden planks of the trench wall. Lily.

God, what has become of you. The most you can make yourself is feel is how frustrated you will be when you have to explain this to her mother. And yet, you, Lily, and Violet were together since elementary school. You can remember how sad she was when Violet tried to desert during training, and ended up getting shot at dawn.

You never did tell Lily that you had a chance to stop Violet and you didn’t take it.

You blink some tears out of your eyes, quickly wiping them on your sleeve. Lily didn’t deserve this. And yet for some reason she was deemed special by the world. She was happy when she found out she was a witch even. She said it would be her honor to serve the army and repay the world for giving her the gift.

And the world repaid it by destroying her.

… Maybe you could heal her. You’re witches after all, maybe there’s some way to heal her.

You quietly grab the Rookie’s bayonet, you needed to confiscate that anyway. You slide it out of the sheathe and prepare your wrist.

“You sure?” he asks.

You nod again. “Pretty sure. If you give me some of that coffee I can be extra sure.”

He shrugs, then bends over and hands you the mug. You take it and quickly take a polite gentle sip of it.

It’s warm, so warm. You can feel it just heat up every bit of your body. He takes it back quickly and says, “Don’t hog it.”

“Sorry,” you say. “Um… is Lily, doing alright?”

Sawyer shrugs. “Battalion is going to have her moved to the rear. You were just there though, why do you ask.”

“Well…” you sigh. “This is going to sound stupid, maybe- Maybe there’s some way to save her. Like, maybe there’s a witch who knows healing magic, or maybe there’s something…. Anything.”

Sawyer nods. “I understand how you feel, Rosemary. But, I’m going to be honest with you. If there were a witch with healing powers, and if they were actually frequent, I wouldn’t be your platoon medic.” He shrugs a bit, looking away. “Just saying.”

“It’s fine, Sawyer.” You gesture lazily, looking down at the ground. “It’s stupid anyway.”

“Not really,” he says. “Anyway, take care of yourself. You know where to find me.” With that, he heads away.

You don’t envy Sawyer’s position at all.

The Rookie says, “Actually… what is trenchfoot?”

“Okay, basically, you see all this water in the trench?” She nods at that. Not clean at all. You get your feet in there, it’s going to soak it all up. And in that water is nothing but grime, blood, shit, piss, and all other stuff. That’s going to infect your foot, and eventually, it’ll fall off.”

The Rookie goes pale as a ghost at that.

You shrug. “That’s the family friendly explanation.”

She nods a bit, pulling her feet up to herself. “Okay, okay.”

With that, the Sarge drops by. She quickly says, “Lieutenant just called. We’re being moved south.”

You nod, standing up, also helping the Rookie up as well. “Righto,” you say.

The Strikers are loaded onto a heavy truck while you and your Lance afforded a much smaller one. It’d be more crowded as you all pile in, but thanks to Lily not being with you anymore, there’s now a lot more legroom.

Daisy says, “This is awesome! There’s so much more room now!” All of you look at her, a bit peeved. “What?” she says.

The Lieutenant walks by the back of the truck, looking inside. She’s certainly a mature woman, at the ripe age of 22, just near the drop off point for the magic to start fading. She says, “Right. You know what happens, get some rest, we’ll be there soon.”

Iris raises her hand. “Are we going to be part of the Big Push, ma’am?”

“That’s unproven,” says the Lieutenant. “Get some rest, you’ll need it.” With that, she slaps the truck on the side, prompting to start moving on.

The tooth.
We don't know much about her (even compared to the others).

You sigh, listening hard.

Iris asks you, “What are you doing?”

You shrug. “Just listening.”

“Well listen to this,” she says. “Rumor has it that the war might end soon.”

“Soon is a relative term,” says Erika. “How soon?”

“This year soon,” says Iris. “I mean, it’s already gone on for a year, it can’t go on for much longer, can it? There’s only so much stuff I can steal and loot.”

Daisy says, “Well, maybe the war will end. That’ll certainly be something. Can’t wait to go back to school, brag about all the Federals I nabbed and show off my scars! The boys will love me!”

Erika harumphs. “Boys are not attracted to scarred women, Daisy. They prefer cleaner looks and fashion sense.”

The Rookie and you are keeping quiet as the three of them argue. The Sarge meanwhile has already fallen asleep.

“Well then I say, fuck men!” says Daisy. “If they can’t appreciate a good fighting woman, then to hell with them!”

Iris says, “You’re so pathetic.”

“And you’re an asshole.”

You look out for the trench. You decide to keep your feet and rest them across the truck bed, right where Lily would sit.

Now the truck is little fuller now.

That's it for today's first thread of Mecha Musume Quest. This will be a miniseries Quest comprising anywhere between 5-10 threads.

See you tomorrow? I hope this is Kitten's favorite war anime.

I just realized I dropped my trip ages ago. I apologize deeply for that.

I didn't notice. heh.

Yay! Prolonged suffering!

I kid, even though its not my usual kind of thing, it's an enjoyable read, though I am braced for a painful level of HEALING.
>>
>>32007429
I'm more amazed nobody noticed, at all.
>>
Like your stuff german, but I can't follow this one. Thanks for running, hope it goes well.
>>
>>32007429
Thanks for the thread.....kinda. My 4 20's (and a 1) tried to save Lily but alas, she is to die offscreen.
>>
>>32007573
Just not that kind of story bro.
>>
>>32007573
It was a valiant effort, but maximum suffering must be maintained.
>>
>>32007573
Just be thankful she's not dying onscreen.
Who wants to bet that one person will get killed every thread until there's nobody left?
>>
>>32007808
More to the point, The Recruit, dying next or last? Betting one internet peanut butter cookie that'll be neva!
>>
>>32007864
Can't be last, we're dying last.
>>
>>32007864
Can;t be next, the Rookie doesn't buy it until she's integrated into the unit and started to wise up a little, then once she's finally got the "one of us" moment she can die.

MY money's on Daisy or Iris next.

>>32008278
>implying interest will last that long if we really do just sit and mope for three threads straight while pretending we're supposed to care about character archetypes dying like flies
>>
>>32008351
We've already spent one thread moping in a trench, I reckon finding creative ways to mope can keep interest up for at least another two.

I also reckon German writes characters well enough that he can manage to make at least me give a shit about them dying.

I'd honestly be down with this
