Am I dreaming?

It was a natural first question to ask, after seeing the scenery around you. You can't remember if you were sleeping or not, but after looking around, it was the only question you could ask.

Am I dreaming?

A cityscape stretches for an infinite number of miles in every direction, with skyscrapers and towers breaking the horizon. Static fills the sky like an empty television screen, with the light of the sun replaced by a mocking grey tone. The lights of the city seem like fireflies, winking in and out, an urban body with buildings as organs.

Am I dreaming?

A small girl with a blue flower growing from her eye sits on a cube, which is covered in test cards, the kind you see sometimes on television. The cubes float above a sea of sharp triangles and pyramids of many colors that extend far below you. She stares, observing you silently.

Yeah, I have to be dreaming. There's no way this can be possible.

She mouths three words. You can't tell what they are.

>(Decision point comes next post.)
>>
With a blink, the girl disappears. The endless city disappears. In their place, you stand on a small platform, suspended in the sky. Clouds float both above and below you, with shadows and rays of light intermingling. Lilacs are suspended above you, a sweet smell that calms you.

A cat sits on a bench, staring into the distance. A set of train tracks follows the cat's gaze, and you wonder if a train is coming. Since this is a dream, you think, there's no harm in taking the train if it comes. And if it doesn't come...

You look around the platform, which floats on the clouds. There is no ladder. There are no steps. There is no way down. Well, no way except for the natural way. Gravity works, as Newton decreed it should. You hop up and down to test it. Yes, gravity still applies, even in dreams.

The cat yawns, and you kick at a loose floorboard. The train hasn't come yet.

Okay, voting closed. Flipping a coin to resolve a deadlock.

Well, you might as well enjoy this for what it is. A dream is a release from the stress of the day. Most are, at least. This one has been quite relaxing so far. Nothing has happened, really. Just a girl on a cube and a nice platform in the sky. Why waste this serene landscape? The light, playing with the clouds like fingers through silk, is quite nice to watch.

But this isn't good enough. Dreams are to be enjoyed, yes, but you can only watch the world go by for so long. You look at the horizon, petting the small cat, and realize that nothing is coming. If there's no train to wait for, you think, then there's really only one way to go.

You step towards the edge of the platform, and the cat meows. Did you own a cat? Maybe.

Smiling at the little black furball, you step off the edge and immediately the wind catches you as you fall.

But it's not a dangerous fall. You feel embraced by the breeze. You smile, and you realize that this must be what flying is like.

(Decision point next post.)
>>
You gently descend through the clouds, looking below you to see your final destination point. A green, sharp world awaits you below. As you fall, you realize that despite the world of green, there are no trees. This is not a forest. No, by the looks of the reflection upon the waves, there is water below you.

You crash into the water, like a cannonball you once did as a child.

But it doesn't hurt. This was not a fall meant to hurt you, as you knew from the start. As you rise from the water, you see that it only goes up to your ankles. Logic is lost on this place; a fall from miles above into this place would never hurt you.

Small plants lie around you, covering the brackish water. Small fireflies flit around them, somehow visible in the bright daylight. The only thing you can see besides the plants are large grey forks that blend into the sky near the top, becoming almost transparent. They feel like gates to you, hundreds. They lead down a path that you can't see the end of.

There are people going down this path. You wonder where it leads.

>You are now 「Impatient」.

You dismiss the people traveling through the gates. Surely the gates were set up by those who had explored this place before. People will follow the ones who make the path. You know that well.

>You are now 「Brave」.

You continue to travel the large swamp, and you walk for a billion years. That long span of time goes by in a single second in dream time, and before you know it you have crossed the swamp and found dry land. There, the ground is dry and gray, devoid of moisture or life. Completely unlike the worlds you've visited before now.

Still exciting, though. Variety is the spice of life.

Continuing to walk the dead plains, you happen upon a sight that you would have never expected. A huge being, standing on thin spider-legs, hovers above a floating fish. No, not a fish, you realize. A whale.

Poised above the whale, dwarfing it, you realize that the creature is a virus. Just like the ones you learned about so long ago, in science class. Microscopic. Then, you realize the irony of the scene. A whale, one of the largest creatures on Earth, next to an oversized virus, one of the smallest creatures on Earth. How quaint.

But as you know, you can only stand still for so long, in a dream.

WE ROLL THE VIRUS! It's a polyhedralical dice with funny legs!
>>
No. Although this may be a dream, it must have rules. Rules that you determine, since you are the source of the dream. Since they are your rules, you can determine them at your command. Gravity exists to suit your whims. Water makes you wet when you want it to. And this large being had angered you.

>You are now 「Irritable」.

It had broken the rules that you knew. "Legs must sustain the body." And before your eyes, as if by magic, the legs of the great beast broke themselves and the great body above fell. The whale, as if it were a skittish fish, flits away with a swish of it's tail, avoiding the collapse of the great virus.

The polyhedralical thing falls. As it hits the ground, it splits open with a massive groaning noise and strange liquid begins to pour from the opening. Liquid gushes over the featureless landscape, flooding the landscape like a biblical apocalypse.

Finally, as you stand upon a rock great enough to support yourself on (how did it get there?), you look at the new landscape. The sky reflects the new ocean of liquid, just as the ocean of liquid reflects the stars that have appeared in this place. You look around. It is the rock and you.

That is, until you see the girl. A huge bubble forming below her, she stands there before an eerie light. You wonder how she got there, and where she came from. The bubble expands, and she keeps her footing despite the changing landscape below her.

"Hey! Can you hear me!" You yell at the top of your lungs, hoping that the girl will hear you. From so far away, you can barely make out her silhouette as she turns towards you.

"Yes?" You hear her voice in return, a nostalgic voice. Was this your mother? Or was it not your mother? And strangely enough, it is as if her voice were coming from right next to you.

"Where am I?" You ask the question. The grounding question, the question that brought stability to this chaos.

"Where do you think?" It was a rebuttal. The question had been turned upon you.

"That- that doesn't answer my question!" You yell back.

"Of course it does. You should think more often." The girl giggles a little. An eyeball stalk crawls out of her hair.

"After all, where do you think?" You stop for a second.

"We should end the wandering now. If you're asking these questions, then your sense of self should have returned." You get a strange sense from the girl. As if she weren't supposed to be here.

She touches the bright light next to her, and it expands, rapidly growing. From a small size, it grows into a sun, engulfing the sea. Before you know it, it engulfs you as well.

And then, you're in a city street. It's softly snowing, and a streetlight casts a glow over the white dust.

The girl is besides you. Her form shifts, stopping you from getting a clear view of what she looks like.

"Who are--" She stops you with a warm finger to your lips.

"You should know yourself before you get to know others." You try to ask her again, but she doesn't respond.

You're glad for the company. Although there were people before her, this girl seems different than the rest. By the way she talks, she must know you. And you can't shake the feeling of nostalgia you get from hearing her voice. As you search your memories, you remember your mother. Her warm embrace.

No. This girl is not your mother.

You defy the rules, walking into the street. A forbidden boundary. People become concerned when you walk the line, but you don't care. You live in the places other people look away from. It is there that you find your companions, society's dregs. This is a world specially for you: the boundary between two norms.

A spray can appears in your hands. A familiar scent comes from the metal cylinder, wet paint. Such works you've created with this small device, color painted over the grey world everyone calls home. Giving out souls. Some pieces were legit. Some weren't. Doesn't matter to you what they think.

>「X」 My idol. A great artist, one I aspire to be someday.

You look into the car, and see the face of the man you want to be someday. The man that you got into your major for. After getting out of that drab little town in the middle of nowhere and into the big city, you heard that he was teaching at a local college, and you just had to get in. It took a lot of studying and more willpower than you thought you had (you've never been good at tests) to get in, but you finally did.

Only to find that he had resigned last semester.

You were crushed. You had gotten into this college for this man, damn it! And now he's gone!? What the hell!

The day you found out, you scribbled that man's face into your sketchbook hundreds of times. And now, looking into these cars, you see those sketches. Each filled with frustration and suffering. After that day, you resolved to chase after him, improving every day, but...

Looking at her, there's something about her silhouette that reminds you of something. Something in your past. Not as far back as your childhood, but back when you first moved into the city. The girl with the ponytail and the piercing glare... who could that have been?

Oh, that was right. The girl by the alleyway. On some of your midnight runs, when you were completing a really big piece and needed more paint, you passed by this one alleyway. That girl was always standing by that alleyway at midnight. As if waiting for someone. You never talked to her, afraid that your piece would be found before it was complete, but she intrigued you.

Then one day, she was gone. As if she had never been there at all.

But besides that, you need to know how to handle her. Why was she in your dream? Maybe this girl would know.

You turn to her, and she smiles, pointing back at the girl.

You turn once more. She's gone. As if she had never been there at all.

"Alright. I think I understand." The blurry girl nods to herself. A sharp thing that you can't place comes from her side, then retracts into her shirt. "Your base, in other words."

"Now, " She pauses for a second. "one more thing. Just one. But you might be surprised at what that one thing is." She nods once more, and walks forward. You follow her, thinking that she knows this place better than you do.

But wait. That makes no sense. Who knows you better than you?

The place that you arrive is somewhat familiar to you. That alleyway. The one that the girl always stood besides. But there's also footsteps in the small covering of snow on the ground. And there's a red light in the building next to you.

Gripped in something you can't describe, you look down the dark alleyway. The beating of your heart skyrockets. You feel something coming back. Something you didn't want to come back.

Slowly, carefully, you start down the alleyway, looking back at the blurred girl to reassure yourself.

The expression on her face is strange. A mixture of regret and excitement, if that makes sense.

You turn back to the darkness. Step by step, even with a waking part of your brain urging you to turn back, you press on.

It seems like hours before you feel darkness engulfing you. There is no light. None at all.

Until one light flickers on. And you remember why you didn't want to come here.

The girl lies pinned to the wall, hundreds of nails piercing every single part of her body. Like a human hedgehog, bleeding, thick streams of blood running down to the ground where it pools underneath her.

You remember now why you hadn't seen that girl again. She had been killed by a serial murderer.

And you were the first to discover the body one year ago.

The police questioned you for what felt like forever, that first time. After that, they couldn't find anything proving your guilt, so they let you go. But they watched you. They watched you for a long time. And you're certain that they're still watching you. Waiting for you to slip up. They don't care about the graffiti, no. They want you to convict yourself, to slip up and let them catch the fucker that's been doing these things. Because that girl wasn't the last, and she wasn't the first.

But you never cared about that. Because it was your fault.

If you had just talked to her, done something, anything at all, you could have saved her. If she wasn't near that damned alley, she wouldn't have died. If you hadn't just run past her every day, ignoring her, then you could have stopped it!

BUT YOU DIDN'T. AND YOU LET HER DIE.

You tried to tell yourself that it wasn't your fault. That it was the serial killer's fault. But when you see something like that, a human being reduced to so much meat like that, something twists inside you.

That's right. That day, after you had saw that girl, a flame had lit deep in your heart. You couldn't let that happen, ever again. Not to anybody.

At first, it started with looking for the serial killer. It was dangerous, you knew that, but you couldn't let that happen to anyone else. That was a mantra you repeated to yourself, over and over. You can't let that happen again. You can't let that happen again. You can't let that happen again.

Then, as time went on, it expanded to more things. Injustices you saw in the street. Where other people would see news of crimes in the newspaper and shrug, you couldn't. You remembered that night in the alleyway and you refused to let that happen to anyone else ever again. So you became a vigilante of sorts. Just one man with a baseball bat.

You had been taken in by the police a couple times after that. They warned you that the next time this happened, they wouldn't let it slide. But you didn't stop. You couldn't stop, you wouldn't let yourself. You made sure never to kill, but when you saw a mugging or a robbery in this big city, you always intervened with whatever was at hand. A bat, or a plank. It didn't matter. You usually were the one getting beat down on anyway.

Even when you went to the hospital, you never regretted it. You can't let that happen again.

>Inner Distortion: A twist in the way that you think. An obsession, or something just fundamentally wrong with you. You had to have one, or you wouldn't be in the War in the first place.

>Our Inner Distortion: Righteousness. You can't let someone die through your inaction ever again.

As you remind yourself of the goal that has consumed your life since then, you feel the arms around you tighten. A small slithering sensation causes you to twitch, but the embrace feels warm and welcoming. Nostalgic. Yet at the same time, it feels unnatural.

"So, you've finally rediscovered yourself." The girl coos, and you look at the arm around your neck. It is no longer blurry. Instead, it's as pale as the grave, covered in stitches. A small millipede stretches in a gap between some of the thread on her arm, and you shiver a little.

"It's good to see you again. I was afraid I had lost you." The voice sounds motherly, yet seductive in a way.

You turn around, to look at her in her full glory. You can see her for what she is now.

"Welcome back, my king." Eyestalks stretch out of her hair with spindly spider legs. Her skin is covered in stitches, as if she were sewn together like a doll. Her clothing is rough and patchwork, with loose threads coming out everywhere. Insects crawl all along her, as if she were a hive for the things.

"Who-- no, what are you!?" You're taken aback by her alien appearance. She smiles a little, her eyes falling downward.

"You forgot me?" She smiles again.

"I am your Shadow. Your true self."

I intend to run some time tomorrow, late like today. I hope to see you guys there as well!

Thanks for the run XYN.

Just curious, but when you mentioned this wasn't TWEWY, what inspirations or guide did you have for this quest? Or none in particular?
>>
>>31992726
I could name a lot of inspirations for the setting, but right now that would be spoilers, so...

One that I can name is Psychonauts, for the mental landscape idea. Other than that, I just went with my gut for what to write, trying to link together the pictures I had found with some trippy imagery.

If anybody has any critique to give, by all means. I want to improve as a writer to give you better quality next time.

If it is, we shouldn't pry anymore.

He has surprises to keep.

Yeah, I'm just gonna go with >>31992815 on this one.

I tried to archive the thread, but the archive is 403ing when I try to view the thread in the archive. Any way I can fix that?

I actually think your writing is great for the most part. Someone else may have may have more valid input.

I would say stick with what you have but everyone has room for improvement.

It says it didn't archive properly. I guess you should try again or contact the admin.

Worst case just save the foolz link.

Works for me now. I've got the sup/tg/ link and the foolz link, so everything should be okay.

Oh! Almost forgot. Here's the link to our character sheet so far: http://pastebin.com/6EYhGrUz

We also need a name for our guy! Any ideas?
