Player Question: Do you prefer fanfiction quests or OC quests? In fanfiction quests, do you prefer ones that draw on just the setting, worldbuilding, ideas, etc, or ones that are closely patterned on the stories of the original work?

QM Question: Why don't you run an OC Quest? Why don't you run a fanfiction quest? If you've run both, what're the differences?
>>
>>31979066
>Player Question
Good Original Settings>Good ripped settings (With very few of the original characters showing up from a good or decent setting, like both HQR's)>Good Fanfiction settings (Using established characters and setting, both PPQ and HMQ work for this, as marvelverse is kinda nice. Doomquest also counts, but it's kinda dead.;_;)>Shitty original settings>>>Shitty ripped settings>Chimera settings>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Fanfiction of shit like Naruto jesus christ dude what the fuck are you even doing dont give me that healing excuse you nutty niggers its literally naruto fanfiction come on man jesus.
I miss Doom Quest
;_;
>>
>>31979066
>QM:
Because I'm currently running two fanfiction settings, meaning the OC setting I originally wanted to run and the two OC settings I've since come up with are sitting on the backburner until I finish (or get sick of) these ones.
>>
>>31979235
I think that Chimera settings deserve an honorable rank boost if they're either hilarious or it somehow magically works.
>>
>>31979308
Chimera settings only deserve an honorable rank boost if you change the names and thereby render them unrecognizable.
>>
Continuing from where we left off, currently running Nanoha FORCE Quest Part 21.5. Come and join us at >>31978081
>>
>>31979350
That's no fun. I'd rather just openly parade the stitched together abomination through town and maybe give it a peanut when it doesn't maul the locals than stretch some cream-colored latex over it and pretend it's a normal person while schoolkids wonder why the funny man is leaking green stuff.
>>
>>31979350
What quests do this?
>>
>>31979066
>Player
I like OC quests a lot better, particularly ones with world building, I looooove world building.

I don't have any rational argument against fanfiction quests though, they're just... eh to me.
>>
>>31979442
Most OC quests, probably. You stuff a bunch of things you like together, make minor adjustments so it all fits, and blammo. "Original setting."
>>
>>31979482
Just because it's generic fantasy doesn't mean it's a chimera setting. Chimera settings are shit like "It's Attack on Titan mixed with Pokemon and Monster Hunter", not "It's sort of like Forgotten realms BUT"
>>
Fuuuuuuuck I love Maverick Hunter Quest. I archive binged it and now all I want is more of it.
>>
>>31979066
>QM
I've only ran OC quests, never attempted a fanfiction quest. Part of it was that I felt that fanfiction quests were kind of lame from a player perspective, the other was the freedom I would have with everything when it was all OC.
>>
>>31979442
Overhuman is Psyren mashed with the magic system from Raildex and then the esper/psi powers from both series crammed in there.

If you really wanted to sperg like an asshole, you could probably argue that Shadow Quest is Greek mythology+Blame! somehow.
>>
>>31979506
If you jam enough things together, and take a bit of time to make them gel, it becomes impossible to recognize the final product as a composite of its parts.
>>
>>31979066

>QM

One concern is that players will know more about the setting than I do, or that I'll say something wrong and make people mad.

When it's OC, when I'm unsure of a certain part of the world, I find it easy to create content that matches the rest.
>>
Joker Quest when? I need my fix of suffering, waifu crying and ass kicking.
>>
>>31979506
>Forgotten realms
I wouldn't mind one of those. Set it in Rashemen, have the dude be a Barbarian, punch Red Wizards in the dick all day erry day.
>>
More Succubutt when?
>>
>>31979066
>QM question.
I don't run fanfiction quest because I like to create my own settings.
>>
>>31979564
It always amuses me how you people claim retarted shit like that.
>>
>>31979564
>>31980044
All writers are creative sponges, and you can take any setting anywhere and come up with 'oh it's just X and Y together!' and be both right and entirely wrong at the same time.
>>
>>31979629
The quest I plan on running has a heavy dose of Forgotten Realms BUT.
>>
>>31979066
I run a fanfiction Quest. It's easy to try and fluff your own part of the setting but I keep myself very strict when it comes to canon information. I just do my research on settings which I consider very interesting, from GuP, to Strike Witches, to Madoka Magica, etc.

In terms of OC Quests, the most OC I've done yet are either Magical Girl Liberty and Magic Shop Quest. The latter much more. I find that worldbuilding is a difficult but interesting experience, especially in terms of coming up with races.

There's certainly a difference. OC Quests require a lot of thought and I admire the QMs who do such a thing.

In terms of fanfiction, I should iterate something keeps me inspired as a writer: "Nothing is new under the sun."

And most importantly, I hate it when people use the term cliche disparagingly. Cliches are cliche because they work, and people notice that they work. The only people who use cliches badly are the ones who don't understand why they work.
>>
>>31980156
But what?

Everyone says they're going to run a quest but few people do. And out of those only a couple are good.
>>
Any young quests running today I could quickly archive binge and participate in? I've got a stupid amount of free time today.
>>
Just gonna throw this out there: Rose (from Fuck Quest) would be 10x as good a character if she was nonwhite, Alabaster called her racial slurs, and she begged for his master race cock. Otherwise the same, of course.

Race play is such a god-tier fetish.
>>
>>31980156
Hit me. BUT what?
There're no Elves? The Gods are long dead? It's actually Spelljammer?
>>
>>31980308
>I've got a stupid amount of free time today.
Then why don't you want to binge on a leviathan monstrosity?
I've been considering reading through The Evoker over on Akun all in one go. Wanna do it at the same time with me? The word count is a tad daunting, but it might be fun. From what I've heard, it's like War and Peace, except with Angst and Lesbians.
>>
>>31980360
I've never been on Akun before, but this might be a good experience.

I usually have lesbians as a red flag though.
>>
>>31980360
I like Evoker, but it meanders a lot. Very character-focused over plot or action, really. The faster and more engaging sections do exist of course, and I find them generally very well done. I guess it might be better paced when you don't have to wait between updates...basically if you like the characters then you're probably gonna enjoy it, but if you're ambivalent or worse towards them I can't imagine trudging through the slower parts.

Forgotten realms but sort of Berserk, with a touch of Elder Scrolls and extra cheese. It's sort of like how media in the 90's and early 2000's represented D&D. Cheesy, over the top and not really that serious. The main inspiration taken from Berserk is the gradual escalation of power. Start out as a guy who can swing sword good, eventually turn into murderhobo prime doing flips and shit while swinging sword really really good. That, and inspiration on how to have monstrous demons.
>>31980317
Half dragons are incredibly common and produce Half dragons with pretty much whoever they mate with.
>>
>>31980408
Akun is fun sometimes. Flatline and Subject Six are good and not yet horrifying million-word monsters if you want something you can catch up in within a couple hours if you read slow. Also not yuri (male protags).

Golden Empire is pretty yuri and it's also something like 500k words if you want something on the other end of the spectrum. The Evoker is even bigger and more yuri from the looks of things.

To Be Human is also pretty good. There isn't overt yuri, but there's some undertones going on. Probably going to happen eventually, but it's so fucking slow that it may take decades.

Anyway, yeah. TBH, Flatline, Subject6, and GE are the only 4 I follow there. Thinking of binging Evoker but I keep putting it off.
>>
>>31979519
Sure is a shame that Hunter Command only runs like once a month.

He writes really good characters and has a drawfag on retainer
>>
>>31980528
>but it's so fucking slow that it may take decades.
R.I.P. Imp's notes.
>>
>>31979066
>QM Question

I enjoy world building and coming up with settings. I have only run OC quests and will probably only ever run OC quests. I like the feeling that people are running around and enjoying a story in a setting I made. I love nothing more than answering questions about my setting.

Honestly, I don't think I'll ever run a fan fiction quest. Most of them are anime based and my power level is too low for that. As for non-anime stuff... I just don't feel comfortable taking another person's setting and using it, let alone their characters.
>>
>>31980577
It kinda feels like the kinda cheap excuse someone would give for not continuing the story, especially given the slow updates previously, but I refuse to give up hope. Plus Imp could have just dropped it when it happened rather than promise more, so it wouldn't make much sense. Guess Imp's just cursed!
>>
>>31980528
GE didn't feel as hard to catch up with as most longer quests simply because it's split into different parts that look more manageable individually. Sure I can read 60k words!
>>
>>31980696
I never got why some QMs get so bothered about notes, I run completely noteless and I've only forgotten names and places a coooouple times.

While it provides a ready audience, that only goes for popular or recent settings, which have already had their fair share of quests. Also, you're far less limited in your cast and setting.

I want to try something within the BakaTest setting: the LNs ended (unless more side stories are coming), the whimsical high school setting combined with grades-as-power is something I wish was real, and it'd be a good test of the fangame I'm trying to create.

The system I'm trying to solidify involves weaponry, diplomacy, and social links all affecting the flow of a war. There's just something charming about young'uns studying in groups (building up resources) and suffering hardship together (learning in either an ideal or decrepit environment, something that would be ethically wrong to subject to children).

I just have to organize the dice and saving-throw systems.
>>
>>31981440

>QM Question: Why don't you run an OC Quest? Why don't you run a fanfiction quest? If you've run both, what're the differences?
I don't run a fanfiction quest because if I did, it would be identical to reading/playing/watching the media in question.
Makes no sense to me. If I want to make, say, a diablo quest, I'll make the quest like the games. Because otherwise what would be the fucking point of making a diablo quest if it's not going to be anything like the games?

Just letting you know that the waifus in BakaTest carried the whole franchise SO HARD. Only the first novel really did the war well, maybe you can count the field trip if you're feeling generous.

After that, it just came down to HAHA NOPE CAN'T WIN AGAINST CLASS A EVER, which was in part thanks to the poorly executed Yuuji's confession plotline. Just saying this if you ever decide to draw from the source material.

I read the last several novels (trudging through the baseball shit) just for more Minami.

>>31982181
Hell, I have like, three ideas for games I want to make, all with interesting universes, but only one has a well developed plot and the other two have nonexistent storylines.

I'm considering turning all of them into quests, mostly to see what /tg/ would do with them, maybe help develop a story for the latter two.
>>
>>31982284

This. Players love customization, and the prospect of becoming more powerful. Just look at Shadow Quest.
>>
>>31982427
even better, you make magic clones of them to do the actual fighting, while never actually risking the original waifu
>>
>>31982395
So? Is it the exact same story? The exact same character? Are you in the exact same place as the game?

You can run a fanfic quest preserving the seting, tone, and atmosphere of the original material and still not have it be the exact same thing as the game.

That's like saying the sequels to diablo are exactly the same game as the first one. Or that anything about wandering around killing demons is the exact same thing as diablo.
>>
>>31982441
no no where's the drama

your waifu comes back from the battle and wants to celebrate victory

But it's not enough- Who want to expeirence life and love in a body with low resolution eyes and 1 degree of pressure sensitivity? She might be able to tell youre holding her hand, but she can't feel your warmth.
Enter her in battle tournaments, patch her up and cheer her on. With a bit of love and a lot of luck, she can win her way to the body of her dreams!
Separate upgrade trees for both AI and body!
Customizable weapons, armour, modes of attack.
Possible alien invasions.
Your waifu might end up as an AC.

I only just started my first quest but it's OC, and I do the same thing for my pnp group. They have yet to play in a generic fantasy land so long as I GM. I have always loved world building, and have been making settings long before I even got into dice based games. I literally would just sit in school as a kid waiting for the bus and lay out the details of some space federation's foreign and domestic policies and how they would effect the space economy. Just for fun. I still remember a lot of them, like a hfy themed setting where humanity hit the singularity and turned into a networked hivemind that was worshiped by small sects of alien cults as incomprehensible star gods, or another where a group of people figured out a technology that granted them limited control over energy after an extensive selective breeding program and cybernetic augmentations, or one where all humans are vat-grown for a single purpose and natural humans are hunted as abominations that exist only to sow chaos.
First time I ran a campaign the players were fighting ancient super-robots from space with home made steam powered monster trucks and a pet chimpanzee that knew kung fu. You just can't beat an OC setting.

>>
>>31983791
/a/ (and /d/ I think) seem to treat their quests a lot differently compared to /tg/. Less game, more story. Less choice, more influence.

Honestly, I think that QMs need to be up front about this shit. Put it in the OP copypasta with archive links, basic "this quest is about ___" summary, etc., whether they're subscribing to the game or the story school of questing.

It's not fun to have people trying to "win" when the QM is trying to collaborate on a nice story, but it's equally frustrating when people try to make losing plays for the sake of the story when the QM is really going for a vaguely story-like puzzle game thing that is meant to be beaten before it beats the players into a bloody pulp.

The dryads really were the best and worst part about BFQ. They could have been amazing, but the qm never really fully grasped what they had going there.

Dryad Gardener Quest would be baller as fuck. Go on an adventure to find the perfect ingredients and test them on the waifus/daughterus and make the perfect cute/fighter/magic/anythingelseyoucouldwant plantgirls. Basically be that Italian wizard dude from that book about dryads in BFQ.

Compromise always. Not only when it's a tie, but also when there's a good write in that came too late or didn't gain traction. Do it when multiple options are favored but one is a clear winner. Do even for joke suggestions (incorporated in a joke manner, of course).

The most voted option wins and is executed as expected, everything else also gets included so long as it isn't a direct contradiction to the primary option.
>>
>>31988270

Bureaucracy? Easy, just take absolutely any setting and make it about pencil pushing.
>You are a cubicle-dwelling suit in charge of managing the assignments and activities of a group of insane murderhobos that do shady things for your mega-corp
>You are an elf in charge of the paperwork that determines who is naughty and who is nice. Men will kill for the chance to alter the contents of this list.
>You are a low ranking member of the Administratum in charge of the logistics and permits of a small sector and its garrisons. How will you deal with multiple, simultaneous xeno assaults and rebellions?
>You are an angle in charge of a small, but critical component in the great plan. Can you and your magic bowler hat prevent mankind from diking themselves in the ass?
>You are a German government worker in the height of alternate history Nazi Germany. Yes the setting is overused but you will never find a more meticulous and efficient pencil pusher in the universe. Can you keep your POW camp running efficiently and under budget?
>>
>>31988771

It is easily adaptable, that's one of my issues. I'm actually something of a bureaucrat, so I won't have trouble making it fit into a setting. I still have a lot to work out, I don't know if I'm going to relegate the bureaucracy theme to the story and un-quantifiable stuff or try to do some kind of mechanics with it.

The thing with cyberpunk, though, is that its bureaucracies are pluralistic and non-overlapping. Official government is weak or nonexistent, so each megacorp operates under its own bureaucracy and is affected relatively little by the others. That you really want is one giant totalitarian regime that's too big and confusing for even the dictators to get a handle on. Maybe even something set in heaven or hell.

I do have to call Face out for being a bit hypocritical, though. He made a big deal out of the MC reacting to a certain confession, but didn't seem to mind when it came to that one book. He kinda scared people off from putting forward writeins by implying they'd get screwed over if they weren't good enough, which is definitely something he'd done previously, so they just went with the premade options.
Then again he got some pretty fucking retarded votes during that part of the story so I can't really blame him if he just wanted to murder his readers for a bit.
>>
>>31989972
He could have just, I dunno, vetoed the retarded writeins. That's a thing that QMs on Akun can do.
>>
>>31989972
Yeah, I had to wonder why the players didn't burn that fucking book the first opportunity they got. The original owner's diary was a blaring warning to not keep it around.
>>
>>31989991
I gotta say, I wanted to keep it around when it first showed up, but never voted on it because didn't start reading until it was on part 5. Once I got all caught up on things, I saw that there was no fucking reason to keep it around because it's almost completely worthless until you get to the sacrificing babies level of evil. Below shit-tier healing and some minor old magic affinity doesn't overcome the whole risk of getting executed for heresy at all.
>>

Write-ins are a difficult thing to handle. For a quest like GE, there has to be that danger of screwing up, and I believe Face presents that danger even with the premade choices.

There's also the issue of them being often horrendously inappropriate or impulsive. With a smaller group of voters that understand well the themes of the story, write-ins can be a very useful thing to have, and have often provided cool scenarios.

But yeah, the book was a clusterfuck. Still, it was an interesting one, and remains an interesting one.

>Okay, so we ran out of steam tonight. I'll try to kick the thread alive in 12 hours. Please, if you read any of my quests, show up, post!

No, DXR. I'm not going to read Last Calibur just because I read DXQ. I do not care for LC at all.
>>
>>31990251
Nobody cares.
>>
>>31990251
This. I kinda feel bad for him since it's obvious how much more he wants to run Last Calibur, but it's just not attention grabbing.
>>
>>31990290
I think his last thread of DXQ was pretty good. Doing something else must have gotten him out of that slump, but I'm just not interested in fantasy
>>

>>31990290
Everybody is like that with their baby. DXR is just not sticking to his strong suit in LC. He doesn't have enough anime waifus
>>
So, I'm an absolute fan of Maverick Hunter Quest, even if it only comes around ONCE A MONTH GODDAMN.

I know Hunter Command and Co. have their own lives and such but goddamn, I need my fix, man. I need it bad...

I'd like to run something LIKE it, or hell, maybe even a side story, if HC and his crew give their blessings, but at the same time, I don't do it for fear of being called derivative or unoriginal and shit like that.

Anyone else know this feel, or a feel like it?
>>
>>31990420
This. There are like two girls so far and most of the time we've been interacting with men.
>>
>>31990307
I've never had a problem with DXQ. The last arc was a lot of fun even without any combat because things kept developing.

>>31990420
I wonder. I don't get the sense that DXR knows what he's doing with Last Calibur. He has a concept, some characters and a location, but he hasn't decided where they're going yet.

And unfortunately, the concept itself isn't attention grabbing. If it had been magic CASTLES instead of swords the story might be different...

>>31990480
Be patient. Replay the series while you wait. Track down Hunter Command on IRC. He likes talking with his fans, and might have ideas or suggestions.
>>
>>31990586
DXR's plot for LC is just a big adventure, kind of like One Piece. He explained it to me that he made it in order to have a quest with an aggressive and active protagonist. I like the setting and there's more to it than just magic swords, but he's trying too hard to not lead us by the nose.
>>
>>31990586
>>31990673
He should just put it down and do something else if he wants to run two quests. LC is still unfinished and it shows.
>>
>>31990586
>>31990673
I've been meaning to read LC, but I keep putting it off.
>>
>>31990703
If you like a ballsy protagonist in a ridiculous fantasy setting, go for it. If you want a strong plot, don't. Right now, it's reading more like weird weekly serial than a quest. It's neat, but aimless. I don't really feel like I know where I should be pushing the MC and DXR isn't helping much.
>>
>>31990586
Well, tracking him down on IRC's no issue, but yeah... I'd love his or Cain Labs' input, advice, or whatever they'd have to say. Heck, I'd love to just be able to shoot the shit with them, too. They seem like cool guys.
>>
>>31990700
Here's what I want DXR to do instead of more fantasy JRPG bullshit. Fucking mecha. Most of our /m/ quests are shit.
>>
So, I'm just curious. Would players like to see more of Avalon (the setting of BPQ) once it's done?
>>
>>31990789
Unrelated guy, what kind of mecha?
>>
>>31990958
A gundam ripoff that isn't zeon fanboy wanking
>>
>>31990673
That's great, but that's not what anyone who looks at Last Calibur sees.

Look at One Piece. It set up the entire plot and the main character in the first chapter by:
1. Giving Luffy a clear goal (become Pirate King).
2. Giving Luffy the means to reach that goal (Devil Fruit).
3. Giving Luffy an incentive to reach the goal (Shanks's sacrifice of his arm).

Each of these then receives further development: In order to become Pirate King you need One Piece. In order to reach One Piece you need to travel Grand Line. In order to travel Grand Line you need a ship, a crew and a map.

This can be emulated in quest form. Even if he wants it to be player driven, he needs to give his players a win condition and a few immediate objectives that feed into reaching the goal. Things like "recruit allies", "acquire resources" "destroy local threats". Completing a certain number of objectives advances the plot to the next stage, where larger forces start to move, as per One Piece's Enies Lobby and Impel Down arcs.

Once the plot gets going and players understand what they can do, they'll start suggesting ideas of their own.

To see how another quest did this, DXR is directed towards Totemist Quest.

>>
>>31991038
I remember one discussion that took place in the archives while 4chan was down, DXR was spitballing with some of the players to make Ekard's immediate goal to free the gods, since the gods are pretty much mandated to follow the King's and they're being treated like shit by the Empire. He hasn't done much with that idea since we're busy tracking down the friends we ditched because of random drunken antics.
>>
>>31991038
Now I feel like rereading Totemist.
>>
>>31991343
Yeah, I remember that. And it actually sounded a bit interesting compared to what we've been doing.

Honestly, I think he should just restart or retcon back to the first few threads and focus on a plot like that. Or some kind of plot period. Right now we're a King with no subjects, no domain, no goal, and no direction.
>>
>>31991364

Not Cain or Command but I'd say if you're going just to scratch the MHQ itch, you should come up with something to hand Command to use later rather than running something yourself. You'll more often than not find being on the other side of the curtain is an entirely different monster than you'd expect it to be.
Sure as hell happened to me. Shouldn't have suggested a western.
>>
>>31991378
Well it looks like he's just going to drop the fucking quest if it doesn't get more readers. And I say good. It was a bad idea anyway when we've already got so many fantasy quests.
>>
I ask of you: What is the single most interesting power in any quest you've read so far?
>>31979066
>Why don't you run a fanfiction quest?
Because I'm delusional enough to think my worldbuilding has value and craven enough to not want to deal with the fallout of getting something wrong.

I'd like to run a comperatively low-power Marvelverse Quest (4 Intelligence, 4 Strength, 3 Speed, 4 Regen, 2 Energy, 5 fighting, or around there) one of these days though.

Bite your tongue. You'll always have Paris. Or at least lightning emitting boots.

>>31991488
A story's genre is only problematic if it relies on cliches or the tropes of the genre to move the plot instead of standing on its own. Which LC is doing, thus explaining why it is failing.

>Why don't you run a fanfiction Quest
Because I wouldn't be assed to research the whole thing, which means I would contradict the setting in ways I don't understand.

Protip to a new QM; QTG is not the place to come for for commiseration or support. If you do it too much, overly touchy manchildren will hate you.

If you feel the need to talk things like this over, or just want to, you can always talk to your players in your thread, or jump in the Quest Thread General irc, which is much less hostile to the idea of people with names.

It looks like the irc has been dropped from the QTG OP, for reasons I can't begin to fathom. It's

There wasn't any conflict, but it was pretty good for a first thread IMO. Next time we'll start getting to the meat on the bones of the setting.

How seriously he takes it all. How desperately he tries to justify his claims that there's no railroad, when the opposite is clearly true. The fact that he's still going, despite being booted off /a/.

And then there's the fact that he's revelling in the attention of an equally pathetic fanbase, pandering to the lowest possible common denominator with blatant wish fulfilment and meaningless smut. He thinks he's created a pastiche of awful porn game plots, when in reality he's simply aped them.

There is no reason for FUCK Quest to exist beyond OP's desire for attention and praise from the one audience that would ever give it to him.

The Pocket spell is basically a bag of holding that activates when you touch something.

We've used it to launch army destroying missile barrages, steal entire airships out of the sky, and take plasma from the sun and throw it at an enemy.
