Welcome to Academy City. The time is morning, the weather is stressful and the date is August 12.

You are Kyril Torikov, ‘Level 2’ Telekinetic Child Error and your morning went to shit. It was all looking to be another good day to waste away again but nope. You didn’t have a hangover but this was a real headache in the making. Asuka, your girlfriend, had been missing. Looking back at it, her refusal to pick up her phone each time you called made sense but it wasn’t like you couldn’t have known or anything. That’s why her father was at your door step asking, or more like shouting at you, where she could possibly be hiding. It was natural to suspect you, after all you were the boyfriend that her father disapproved of but made no move to interfere. After a brief sweep of the room, Lord Kudou still hadn’t left. You were pretty sure a man of his means should have better to do in terms of finding his daughter instead of sitting down at your table for some tea. He took a place with his back to the window and you sat opposite from him.

“Let me tell you why I am still here,” he took tea without additives, “I assigned two spotters to look over the Tokiwadai dormitory. When they didn’t check in at the standard time I went to find them. They were dead, at least by several hours with their throats slit. I suspect Asuka is well acquainted with my methods and has taken precautions to safeguard herself against them. You however, are a possible blind spot. She might suspect me of going through you but perhaps not the methods you will choose to find her.”

“So you want me to help you?” you asked.

“Oh my boy, you think you have a choice in the matter?” Lord Kudou almost smiled.

There on your chest danced red dots. You couldn’t see the shooters though and you’re pretty sure the Lord was in the way. The question was if this was a bluff then would you call it?

“If she's missing then obviously I'm gonna do whatever I can to find her. You're wasting your time with this show of force or whatever you wanna call it. You got any leads at all?” you asked nonplussed.

Lord Kudou’s smile wilted.

“Truly you are fearless,” he replied dryly, “It remains to be seen whether that is a good or bad thing.”

He fiddled with the cuff of his left sleeve as he spoke before placing a laser pointer on the table.

“As for your question, you are my lead. The others were dead ends. I am not very well acquainted with this city and what better help than to enlist my future son-in-law?”

“Good job,” you shot back with equal sarcasm, “What did you do to get her like this?”

“Many things I would assume,” he answered, “Asuka and I do not see eye to eye on several issues. You would have to ask her for the specific reason however. All I know is that she refuses to speak to me and if she is half as stubborn as I am then I am not sure whether we will ever speak to each other again.”

If she promised to never speak to him again then she was doing a damn good job of it. That aside, you probably were his only lead at the moment. He was sure to accompany regardless of where you went and who you went to track down Asuka. Would that stop you, definitely not. Would that be problematic, most likely. Still, your task was laid out before you. Who do you seek out to acquire more information on Asuka’s whereabouts?

You were really tempted to go to Toulour again. THIEF was reliable, even if they were pricey. However you’re not sure how Lord Kudou would take it to know you were consorting with some of the more questionable elements of Academy City. Not to say that Kaoru was herself not questionable, it was just easier to hide under her cover of Judgement. Lord Kudou was going to have a front row seat to your methods and no doubt was using this to learn more about you. You’re not sure how you feel about that yet as you dialled Kaoru’s number.

“What troubles you this time Torikov-san?” Kaoru greeted you.

“Have I become this predictable Kaoru?” you wondered.

“I seem less like a friend and more someone you call upon for aid,” she replied, “But no matter, if I can be of some help then by all means.”

“I’ll make it up to you later if you want,” you felt slightly guilty, “You don’t happen to have a missing persons report filed for Asuka do you?”

“None at all,” she answered after a bit, “As far as Judgement or Anti-Skill is aware, she has not been involved in any altercations. But as we both know, the system is far from perfect. I shall make some discreet enquiries on the matter and get back to you on that.”

“Sounds fair, thanks Kaoru,” you hung up afterwards.

“So, that’s it?” Lord Kudou asked.

“Keep your pants on pops,” you replied offhandedly, “I got people working on it.”

His eyes twitched and he asked you,

“Then may I know who this Kaoru person is?”

“Yes. She’s a member of Judgement.”

“The student militia?” he stroked his chin, “I would never have thought you would share cordial relations with them. Then again, I suppose it is natural.”

He was making an awful lot of comments and assumptions about you. To be honest you didn’t know anything about him outside of being a huge judgemental asshole and Asuka’s father. Maybe you could ask?

“So can you describe her previous run away attempts?” you asked from the kitchen.

Once you returned with more tea Lord Kudou answered.

“Do you not know her well enough?” he answered with a question of his own.

“She doesn’t back down ever, except when it came you,” you pointed out.

“I concede that point,” he shrugged, “but no, she has never shied away from me like this back home. Perhaps she tired of our verbal disagreements?”

You shrugged in turn. It was not like you’d know either.

“What about her sword, what’s up with that?”

“It is a family heirloom. I never thought she would be so taken with it,” he admitted, “It may have been a mistake on my part to have shown it to her so early in her life.”

“I wouldn’t have met her otherwise.”

“My point exactly.”

“I don’t go around picking fights if that’s what you’re thinking.”

He only shook his head lightly.

“She doesn’t she have other hobbies does she? Or someone in the family she’s close to?”

“No, I do not believe so, to both counts. Maybe her uncle, but he was never around too often to make a difference. I do not think any one of us were to my regret.”

“You were too busy with your job or something?” you asked.

“You could say that. I am astrophysicist, though I’m mostly retired,” that was totally a lie even if his face didn’t show it.

“Astrophysicist my foot,” you called him out, “You can’t just pretend that you had me in the scopes and say that.”

“Believe what you want, I am a Lord after all,” his poker face was remarkable.

“Doesn’t mean you have to threaten me like that. What’s up with the title anyway?”

“I wasn’t threatening you. You just assumed I was. The title is in recognition of my contributions to the safety of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland,” he answered cooly.

Before you could pursue that line of questioning further, your phone rang. Apparently Kaoru had found Asuka.

“She has been seen entering some of the subterranean areas of the city. There aren’t cameras down there but we’re can still easily monitor the exits. I will join you on your search.”

“I can assume that your friend has located my daughter?”

You only nodded. Getting up you put away the cups as Lord Kudou waited outside. You don’t quite exit just yet. You had no idea where you were headed, and Kaoru had been rather brief with her explanation.

Call it a feeling you supposed, but it was almost as if the coming adventure was going to require more than just your telekinesis. That was why you stuffed the brass knuckles in to your jacket before you headed out. Better safe than sorry.

Kaoru had joined up with you at one of the underground shopping malls. It made sense to start your journey there. What surprised you was her greeting of Lord Kudou. Then again, she probably went through Asuka’s record to get you the information.

“Lord Kudou, a pleasure to meet you,” she didn’t bow too deeply.

His eyes narrowed, as if the yellow glow that you normally saw around her was also visible to him. Or did he not like being at a disadvantage?

“I am Jaswinder Kaur, I shall be accompanying you on your search.”

“Since you already know my name I suppose we should get started,” he barely nodded back.

“Very well, if you would please follow me,” she led the way.

There was a service door that looked like it was for the janitorial staff only. It did seem well oiled though if Kaoru’s handling was any indication.

“The problem with the underground tunnels is that there is a lot of ground to cover and we don’t necessarily know which way she went. This was her last known location.”

The three of you stopped at a three-way junction. They lead off in different cardinal directions, north, west and southeast, at least according to the map. She was right, you didn’t have time to comb through the tunnels all at once and you were tempted to call in a few favours to help you. But was that really a good thing? If someone found her, that still left a confrontation because that was more or less the heart of the issue. She was running, if not from her father then from you. Pushing herself away, almost like that time she broke down in your arms.

There had to be something about Asuka that could clue you in. Racking your brain you tried thinking back on what exactly she said. Her hobbies, her sword, everything about you remembered but it wasn’t really that useful in the end. You were pretty sure that was a clue in there somewhere but you couldn’t see it. Your companions were similarly stumped.

“Going by experience, she would most likely fall back on her old habit of finding violence where she can,” Lord Kudou posited.

“But where would she find one?” Kaoru asked, “She surely does not wander the seedier districts and pick fights with thugs. It would be too obvious and we at Judgement would be wise to it quite quickly.”

Wait, you recalled something she once said to Tamezou, when you first met and before you even knew her name. She called him a sore loser. It implied he had fought her before. Could it be a clue?

“Kaoru, ever heard of a guy named Tamezou?” you asked.

“Only once before. I can have Uiharu search him up quickly,” she replied.

“He may have ended up in a fight against her once before, like, what way back in July,” you went on, “Think Uiharu can sift through that kind of information?”

“I see, I suppose I cannot fault you for remembering something that small bit of information from a month ago,” Kaoru started dialling Uiharu, “Pray tell, is this the same Tamezou whose jaw you broke?”

You nodded slowly under Lord Kudou’s glare.

“To be fair, he called her a slut,” you were not going to cave in to his disapproval.

He grunted and you three turned around to find a café or restaurant to wait for Uiharu to sift through the CCTV footage. It would only take her a few hours. Kaoru for her part was rapidly switching her attention between the two of you whilst Lord Kudou was doing an Ikari Gendo impression.

Kaoru was normally more reserved than this you thought. You’re not sure what she’s up to this time but you dared ask her anyway.

“Don’t you know who he is?” she asked back.

“He’s Asuka’s father?” you were not sure where she was going with this.

You think his eyes narrowed at that.

“Wait, are we speaking in Punjabi again?” you asked.

“He may know many things but Punjabi is not among them,” she replied, “Still it surprises me that you are familiar with the Baron of London, if only out of sheer coincidence.”

“That’s his title? Is there something I should know about him?”

“There isn’t much to say but it would aid me greatly if you could tell me if he is a magician or not.”

So that was it? His obvious ties to the English aside, Kaoru was curious about whether or not he was a magician? Your eyes picked up nothing. There was no aura around him like Kaoru, Teacher or even a vampire. He didn’t seem to be able to manipulate mana and you inform her so.

“I see, well thank you for satisfying my curiosity then,” she replied then her phone rang, “Phone.”

The switch back to Japanese was instantaneous. A hurried conversation with Uiharu later and you were pointed in the direction of School District 19 which was a fair bit away from where you currently were. The now impatient Lord had decided to take a cab there to save time.

The time is now afternoon, the weather is hot and the date remains unchanged.

The address and area you were deposited in looked to be some flat empty lot with debris piled up haphazardly about. Surrounding it were empty and no doubt condemned buildings. You heard the district was in decline but for it look even worse than School District 10 was saying something.

“Uiharu says that this is actually one giant compound,” Kaoru gestured, “Apparently there’s also a tunnel exit that’s been used by both Kudou and Tamezou back in July. What they were doing is anyone’s guess.”

“Nothing good I wager,” Lord Kudou said.

There were very few pedestrians but you could tell a lookout when you saw one.

If the tunnel was a known location that they passed through then you were going to try there first. It was like any other tunnel that led underground really but you didn’t think it’d be well it. However, it looked there had been other tunnels added down here that weren’t part of the original plan. One led to a spiral staircase which after a quick check by Kaoru was indeed just another escape route that emerged in one of the buildings. It was the other tunnel which held something more interesting. Sound carried through though you could barely hear it. It was the sound of cheering and shouting muffled no doubt by how far it had propagated.

It was cramped and darker than the main tunnel, fitting barely the width of two average people. You went first, seeing as your wheel chair didn’t block Kaoru’s nor Lord Kudou’s view as you ventured deeper. Once the light at the entrance became barely discernible though did the end come in to view. You had entered a smaller hall made of stone and wooden door with metallic bars. There was only one guard who looked surprised to see you.

“Hey what’s this?” he asked, “Look this is the fighter’s entrance. You’re not supposed to be here.”

“And what if we are,” Lord Kudou replied with the authority of someone his station.

“Uh, I guess if you’re here to drop off your man,” he looked at Kaoru, “er girl, then yeah go ahead on through. I just didn’t think you’d get here so soon.”

“What do you mean?” the Lord continued.

“Uh, you guys are here to fight The Dictator right? I heard the challenger was a girl.”

Lord Kudou and you looked at each other knowingly. Your reply was,

“Of course she is,” Lord Kudou chided, “But before we go, what’s the turnout today and how many fights has The Dictator had today?”

“Huh? About a thou, and she’s still fresh today. Why do you wanna know anyway?”

“Odds are good then,” Lord Kudou seemed to conclude.

Thus the three you walk unmolested in to the staging room. There was nobody here at the present moment but that couldn’t last forever.

“For the record I would like to object to having no say in the matter, but I would have done the same regardless,” Kaoru stated, “I suppose there is a greater plan here?”

Now that you think about it, you didn’t really have a plan once you found Asuka. You were just too concerned with finding her in the first place. Of course, leave it to Lord Kudou to have one,

“Of course, for now we have met one of three objectives. We have found my daughter, but now we must ascertain her condition. Finally if at all possible, she and I have things to discuss.”

“I suppose can do the former but the latter is more a matter between the two of you and I doubt I can convince her to speak to you on your behalf,” Kaoru said, “What about you Kyril?”

It was true that there was a chance to talk to her today given the circumstances was it even the right time to talk to her? Even if your end goal was handling her issues, especially those concerning her father this was a bit too sudden for you to figure out. Further contemplation was interrupted by the entrance of another. It looked like the venue’s staff.

“Alright, the champ’s ready, the challenger ready?”

With a clap on her shoulders, you sent Kaoru off to the main ring whilst you and Lord Kudou found a place to watch. To be honest, you were kind of curious as to who would win in a fight between Kaoru and Asuka. The last time was only one exchange of blows and all it did was ruin a perfectly nice bouquet of flowers. You still had no idea what the schedule contest was going to be but your bet was on one with little rules.

Lord Kudou and you took seats in a small box-like room that opened to the pit below. No, you were mistaken, they weren’t in a pit. They were in a clearing with crude metal fence separating the fighters from the crowd below. You were probably in one of the VIP boxes then if this was any indication. Lord Kudou was trying his best to mask his displeasure with an indifferent mask but it wasn’t taking.

Another scan and you could see the odds and the dudes selling tickets for the bets. The odds were four to one. Once Kaoru stepped through the entrance however, you saw a zero tacked on to the end of the four. The house was favouring Asuka of course. That was to be expected of what you supposed was the undisputed champion. She sat easily in a chair on the far end, the Dean resting across her lap. Her expression towards Kaoru wasn’t displeasure, far from it. You thought she was pleasantly surprised. Yes, she much preferred this fight with the way she was smiling. It would have been kind of scary if you were the one standing across from her but Kaoru looks nonplussed with that frown of hers.

Before the fight started you,

She'd be far more at home at a Vikin mead hall or a Campaign tent than in a dress acting proper.

Your decision to bet on The Dictator was in no way a snub against Kaoru. As far as you were concerned, the Sikh was a formidable fighter if she her fight against Kanzaki was any indicator. The thing was that you didn’t bet against The Dictator. That The Dictator was also your girlfriend had nothing to do with it, nope, not at all. Besides, if you didn’t win, you were planning on cleaning out the place later anyway. It looked they handled most of the betting through tickets but cash was definitely involved. If you were going to do this later, you were going to need bags, or several, a distraction, extra pairs of hands and a getaway vehicle that could carry you all.

“Jaswinder Kaur, what a pleasant surprise,” Asuka’s voice silenced the crowd, “I did not think you were the type.”

“As you opponent I am obligated to tell you that I am doing so at the behest of your father,” Kaoru replied.

“I would suspect as much,” Asuka brought a finger to her chin, “tell me little Sikh, why did you think I care?”

“Then let us begin.”

With a nod from Asuka, the Sikh nearly disappeared as she stepped in. You barely caught the rush but Asuka was not so unprepared. The ring of steel brought a raucous cheer from the crowd, drowning whatever she had to say to her opponent. Kaoru didn’t stop though, continuing with a back heel sweep that took Asuka by surprise. The following downwards blow was stopped as The Dean lashed out, whirling about to sever feet from leg. It was a good effort but Kaoru seemed to have completely mastered her body to be able to stop before the blade bit her. The brief reprieve only allowed Asuka to get up and enter a real stance before their blows connected again.

You only saw trails of red and yellow arcs, wondering how they managed all that speed. It looked like Asuka was slower but each of her strikes were calculated where as Kaoru sought to overwhelm The Dictator with a flurry of blows. Her kicks were like a striking snake, trusting solely on her dagger to hold the blood red blade that Asuka wielded at bay. How could you even begin to know who had the upper hand as their furious exchange continued? Asuka had strength to block blows and any that did sneak through looked like it didn’t matter. She was able to nick Kaoru once or twice as evidenced by a trail of blood that the Sikh would often leave behind. They were shallow cuts but it seemed to sap Kaoru more and more as time when on. You supposed that would lose more blood if she kept up her busy barrage.

If anything, they were probably the decider. Kaoru was committed to using her feet whilst Asuka simply swung her sword without much care. As the Sikh slowed, you were finally able to make out the exchanges between them. It started with a horizontal blow from Asuka which Kaoru could only brace herself for. The Sikh was too occupied and jarred by the block to even see Asuka stomp on her foot. Whether from the surprise, shock, pain or a combination thereof, Kaoru finally lost the grip on her dagger. This was the opening that Asuka sought and her next blow left a long red welt across Kaoru’s cheek. Her collapse finally silenced the crowd.

Asuka's gaze found you, or rather her father.

“Well?” her voice carried across the clearing, “Are you not entertained? Is this not why you are here?”

Lord Kudou turned away and walked out of the box. All that was left was you and that’s where her gaze settled next as did the gathered crowd.

Let it be said that you were uncomfortable with the attention. Slowly, you made a show of getting of your wheelchair, you got to your feet before you raised your hand. Slowly, they came together as a clap. It wasn’t just you for long, as the clapping started to pick up among the crowd before the applause rolled in like a spring shower. Asuka simply basked in it. Her smile was really just radiant you thought. You couldn’t help but smile back.

As the applause died down, Asuka slung The Dean over one shoulder and Kaoru over the other, making sure to retrieve her opponent’s weapon, before leaving the arena. Your winnings were a cool five digit sum that was more than enough to reimburse your speeding ticket fine and then some. Thus you decided that you would treat Asuka to some dinner, and if Kaoru was conscious enough, her too.

“You know if you wanted some alone time you could have just said so,” you greeted her with a kiss.

“Well, us women need to have our secrets,” she replied.

She was probably tired or else she would have gone on a lengthy tirade about it.

“Then, perhaps you would like some dinner?” you suggested, “All on me.”

“I would like that.”

“Then, let’s go.”

With your hand in hers and an unconscious member of Judgement over her shoulder, you led Asuka away for a night on the town. Tonight, all was right with the world.

Episode 33 end. No interlude tonight but we’ll resume Wednesday if nothing comes up. I’ll have some then.

Dinner date. Kaoru is probably going to feel it in the morning. Was it rape? When writefag and /tg/ meet, the story begins.
