"I recognize my failing and will be sure to correct it, Miss Malal. My apologies." You hear yourself say in a careful monotone, allowing the vox-speakers of your helmet to modulate it to something almost lifeless, machinelike, a complete mirror to the Culexus Rank Leader's own voice. Both newcomers blink at this, with the long-haired blonde one giggling behind a black-clawed hand - and you wince as Malal's own gloved hand smacks loudly and painfully against the back of your helmet, the force behind it enough to scramble your retinal display.

"You're being smart. We talked about you being smart." Malal growls, although you can sense she's amused behind her glowering skulled faceplate. "What did we say about your being smart?"

"...That there's a time and place for everything?" You reply after a moment, before automatically flinching and raising one arm rising up to ward off the second blow. It never comes, almost disappointingly, with Malal only shaking her head, the tell-tale gargling sound crackling from her helmet's speakers.
>>
>>31931297

She turns to the newcomers and shrugs, as if to say 'see the bullshit I have to deal with? - netting a sympathetic nod from the black-haired knight and another giggle from the blonde one. "Youths." Is all that she says, and the pair reacts again, much like a young couple commiserating with a bereaved parent.

Normally, you'd have probably minded about being chided like that in front of guests - even more when they were part of another Officio, especially one as distinguished (or so you've heard) of the Second - but your visit to Haruka earlier, it...really lightened you some. It didn't wipe away all the dread, sure, nor completely unclench your guts from the worried mess they've twisted up into - but Haruka's words had enough of a balm that you could at least tolerate how Malal treated you like the patsy in a third-rate comedy duo.

"Well, let's get the pleasantries quickly and out of the way because we're running late. Ladies, this is Omegon, but you can call her Yuma, since I personally think that's cuter. She's the one we talked about, and who you'll be doing your best to protect. When the shit hits the fan, so to speak, look to her and she'll get you out of the fecal mist even before you can breathe it in."

...

Did...did Malal just give your real name to these...foreigners? Add to that, they were talking about YOU? And what the fuck is this about you getting them out of...of whatever Malal was talking about?!

Before you can ask, though, it's here that Malal turns to you, now gesturing at the two before you. "Omegon, pay attention. These are two very important people of the Second. The first here with the black hair and the robot arm that looks right out of a super robot anime is Karasawa Enyo, Marshal of the Black Templars."

The one called Enyo nods sharply again, her lips pressed in a thin, formal line. You return the nod with the same silence - at least this one didn't want to engage in banter. You have a feeling the other one might, though--

"And this one, with the claws eerily reminiscent of our Warmaster's and long blonde hair you can probably mop an entire hall with, with how it looks like it hasn't been washed for a while--" The blonde pouts at this, but giggles again. "--is High Marshal Raleigh Alondight of the Black Templars. Don't be afraid if she giggles a whole lot, she's just trying to be unsettling so that you don't notice how short she is. Doesn't really work, of course." This time, Malal chuckles. "Oh, and whatever you do, don't mention about how she has wheels for feet."

You blink at this, and then look down, following where Malal's pointing.

...She does have wheels for feet. Two big ones, rimmed with bronze and anchored where her ankles should be. It's like those kids' shoes with single wheels on the underside, but instead of a shoe you wear you replace your foot with just the wheel and just that.

That's...well. You've never seen that before, but then again, foreigners.

How do you react?

[]...Miss Malal, are you keeping mission parameters from me again? What's this about me suddenly being important all of a sudden? And why are the Second involved?

...Okay. So apparently Malal's keeping important-sounding mission parameters from you again, if all you had to go on was that that talk about you saving these two from the fan-shit-hitting. You'll definitely have ask her about that in a little bit.

But...seriously, this foreigner's got WHEELS for feet. It's like she doesn't even care about doing normal things with her feet anymore. This goes beyond the sheer, absolute lunacy of Kharn's blade-legs - yes, they're sharp, knifey shit, but at least she can walk with them, and use them as weapons in a pinch. But wheels? What possible tactical advantage can they offer?

"You've got wheels for feet," You finally say, pointing at them. "Why? Just...why."

"Omegon," Malal's bark has a note of warning in it, as you continue to stare at the impossible, stupid wheel-feeties. "What the hell did I just tell you?" An exaggerated sigh wheezes from her speakers. "Seriously, it's as if she doesn't even listen to me, you know? In one ear, out the other. I think it's all the video games and anime--"

"Miss Malal, don't even start." You can't help but be smart now, and you finally manage to dodge a helmet-slap that would've rocked you back on your heels. "You pointed them out! I didn't even notice them until you did! Seriously, what did you expect?!"

"It's fine, it's fine. No need to discipline the young lady, Miss Malal." Raleigh Alondight says after a moment, still smiling. "I get the question a lot, and I"m always happy to answer." It's here that she wheels forward, placing one clawed hand on your shoulder. ...Christ, even with your suit's temperature control and insulation, you can feel how cold her metal fingers are. "Miss Yuma, are you familiar with our credo as the Black Templars? About how we strive to emulate the First Knight in our deeds, thoughts and battle craft?"

...Barely, yes. You remember reading something about that. Some material that Malal asked you to read, dry and boring stuff. The First Knight, a key figure in the Blessed Lady's Mythology, was a warrior without peer, with her brilliant white sword smiting evil wherever she found them. She was justice given form, heavenly wrath honed to a killing edge. That was the extent of what you could recount about her.

As limited as your knowledge is about the First Knight, you're pretty sure she never advocated cutting off your feet and replacing them with wheels.

"Ah, but see, Justice, as it is, needs to be swift. It needs to get from point A to point B in a relatively short period of time, or else there won't be anyone left to dispense justice to, seeing as they've all buggered off." Raleigh squeezes your shoulder. "It's the First Knight's imperative, then, that the Black Templars must always be able to quick, to be peerless in speed and alacrity--"

Malal grunts here, before tapping an imaginary watch on her wrist with a finger.

"...Yes, yes, fine. I know we're pressed for time, but that's no reason to hurry me up." Raleigh frowns, before turning back to you, suddenly all seriousness. "As I was saying, it's the First Knight's imperative that we go fast, Miss Yuma."

Ah. So...that's what they're for, then? So that she can...go fast?

"That's the long and short of it, yes."

Right.

Why are all foreigners so fucking WEIRD?

[2/3]
>>
>>31932323
a seriously uncomfortable one, yes
>>
>>31932331

"Right, trivia time's over, we need to get to where we're going." Malal claps both her gloved hands. "Alondight, Karasawa, get the rest of your Knights in here so we can get to the teleportation platform right away. I just need to talk to Yuma here in private vox frequency for a second, because she picked the option to be a watch-wearing dildo just now."

"Understood, Miss Malal." Both Raleigh and Enyo bang their mailed fists into their breastplates in salute - and you run after Malal as she walks towards the skull throne that Kharn had had constructed specifically for her, made out of real skulls, and demanded it be placed at the business end of the General Assembly Hall. Kyuubey, of course, was quick to acquiesce, although you suspect it was really more of Malal's doing than the Incubator actually allowing himself to be pushed around.

"They're involved because I called in a few favors," Malal grunts into the private vox channel she'd just opened (and brute-forced you to join a moment later, the notification popping up in your retinal display like some sort of screamer).

She plops herself right down on the pitifully-worn cushion of the skull throne itself - and you could almost feel the sympathetic pain of having to sit in such an uncomfortable chair. A cool chair, but a very uncomfortable one nonetheless. "Let's be realistic here - none of us are going to last long around Walpurgisnacht without their kind of protection. They'll be tanking hits for us until we can do what we're supposed to."

...That makes sense, sure, but why the Second specifically? Isn't there another Officio that could be better at this than them?

[3/4]

>Why are all foreigners so fucking WEIRD?
yes, because we don't have any loonies in the ninth.
>>
>>31932323
no it's six inches
>>
>>31932338

"No, they're the best at this." Malal shakes her head. "Black Templars are pretty much trained to be really tough no matter the environment, with group tactics specifically designed to charge en-masse through enemy ranks to get to the main objective. Their armor helps too." She shrugs. "I'd argue the Sixth is a better choice, but they're more hunters than anything else. And we need a shield, not a bunch of howling lunatics that you can distract with a bag of catnip."

Right. You'll...accept that for now.

"For now, she says." The Culexus chuckles. "Anyway, as for your other burning question - it's really nothing important. I just want them to make sure that they'll sacrifice everything they have to protect you. Not that I doubt them or anything, but out of everyone in our rank, I'd like for you to be able to get home in one piece." She reaches out and pokes your visor with a glove-encased finger. "After this, it's only going to get worse for the Ninth, and they'll need a Culexus more than ever. Especially a Prognosticator that they can rely on."

...What? She's...Malal's actually trying to manipulate things so that you'll be the only one left alive? She's doing that for YOU?

Boy, it...it really makes you feel glad that you didn't think of her as a traitor earlier, right? And all that stuff you did earlier?

...

Ugh. You can feel your guts clenching up again, despite Haruka's benediction earlier. It's just...ergh.

"Well, don't get all choked up about it," Malal snaps mildly at your silence. "That's no guarantee you'll be walking out of there, even. But I'm trying to rig it so that you've got the highest odds to do so." She shrugs again. "Just try not to tell anyone else in the rank. I think morale's at an all-time low as it is."

How do you react?

You try to swallow back the panic rising in your chest, surging up your throat. Why...why you, of all people? Of all the Culexus? Besides your being the latest recruit, there's...there's not much justification for you to be the one she's betting all the chips on. You can name three, maybe five Culexus that have much more potential than you, you can name ten out of the remaining twenty that are way better at being a Culexus than you ever could - and pretty much all of them are more experienced than you are. So why you? Why not the others? Why not Cavefish?

Why not Malal?

"It's...not in the cards," Malal replies, the brief pause in her words as pregnant with hesitation as it could ever be. "It's not part of the plan. Plan won't work if things aren't done right and proper. And I can't just hand it off to someone else, you know. They might get it wrong."

...Plan? What plan? Is...is she planning something?

Jesus, is that what it is? Is Malal planning to orchestrate her own death, like...like some sort of grand suicide in front of everyone else? Because you'll tell her now, up front, how much bullshit that is. She's not even the type to make a martyr of herself--

"And I don't recall you being this fucking objectionable." Malal growls, surging to her feet suddenly. "Do you think I WANT to die? Do you think I want to see my entire rank die out there, fighting a world-ending monster for a world who won't even know what their names are, much less what they look like?"

...

>>
>>31933214

"I don't," Your rank leader continues, crossing her arms over her chestplate, speaking in a much calmer voice now. "No one in their right mind would want any of those things. But we have to. I have to. Because it's what we're supposed to do. It's what the plan's asking for - the plan that'll save this world and everything in it with the maximum chance of success. A plan I've been working on for..." She looks up towards the ceiling, counting off with her fingers. "...What, like more than a decade now? Something like that." Malal shrugs again.

"But yeah. If I can rig it just enough without deviating from the plan too much, we can still get that success rate AND have enough left over to save one." She pokes you on your visor again. "And the plan allows for you, Omegon. Deal with it however you wish, but I don't want to hear another objection about it from you. Alright?"

Gritting your teeth, you force yourself to nod. It's...you still think this is bullshit. You still think Malal is being fuckheaded crazy about all this. The fatalistic tone in her voice - it makes her sound so resigned. So weak.

Not unlike you, earlier, when you were so desperate to hear from Haruka that you did nothing wrong.

"Good," Malal sighs, relieved. "It's not just Walpurgisnacht the plan takes care of, you know? A lot more things beyond it. Hell of a lot more things, and they all hinge on how this turns out." She turns towards the skull throne she'd just stood up from. "...A promise is a promise, anyway."

It's then that the hall, all but empty a few moments ago, is suddenly filled with heavy bootsteps, clanking armor-plates, and purring servos. You turn to glance along with Malal, and see the rest of the Black Templars filing in. ...More than twenty of them, it looks like. Probably thirty. Each one with a distinct variation of their black armor, draped with bone-white tabards with their heraldic cross.

Each one looking calm, composed, and ready to die.

[2/3]
>>
>>31933222

In the shattered quiet of the hall, Enyo barks out a single word - and the group of Black Templars immediately halt in their tracks with a single collective step, forming two perfect lines. The Marshal then turns on her heel to bang her fist against her chestplate again - and Alondight nods at Malal, who then waves back.

"Right, we're about to set off. If Cavefish ran Protocol 8 just like I taught her to, our guys should already be at the teleportation facility." Malal looks at you. "...Anything you'd like to get off your back before we do, Yuma? There's no going back after this, you know."

What do you say?

Yes, I think Malal knows, but I don't think that will stop her from being upset. It might be part of the Plan, though.

Survivor's guilt, it's a he'll of a thing. Is Yuma gonna blame chiaki later for taking up all her time? If Yuma had gone to Kharn and handled the other stuff like Malal ordered her to instead, I wonder if that would have a significant effect on the outcome of events.

It is a moot point now, because there is no going back. It is interesting to think about though. I wonder if we will see a change in Omegon. Or perhaps during an interaction with her, chiaki might accidentally on purpose hit a nerve.

Omegon, I need you to go into my mind to help me remember a name of someone. Why is your helmet sweating?
>>
>>31933250 >>31933252 >>31933256 >>31933269

You take a deep breath, smelling the faint antiseptic smell of your suit's deodorizing rebreather. It's...she's right. After this, there's no going back. You need to tell her, at the very least. Tell her the truth - and Haruka already did tell you that you did nothing wrong. Malal...you're confident she would see things in a similar light. They've matched perceptions before, at least.

"I never...I never checked up on Kharn, Miss Malal." You finally bring yourself to say, and you're surprised to hear your voice sounding so calm. Besides that brief moment of hesitation, it's almost like you're greeting your Rank Leader hi, instead of admitting that you lied to her face only moments ago. "I didn't have time to. I should've checked up on her, but I couldn't. I'm sorry."

Malal is deathly silent here, her helmet slowly turning to face you completely - the skull painted upon her visor seemingly not just staring, but glaring. Her gloved hands, earlier relaxed and loose, are know clenching into fists - unclenching a moment later, and then clenching again. "

And apropos of - well, what's happening right now - your retinal display suddenly locks onto Malal, labeling her as a Threat, Threat, Threat. You blink the warning away quickly, as you wait for the Culexus to react.

"...That's fine." She finally replies, her voice just as tight, as tense as the fists she's making with her hands. "I can't say I'm not disappointed - I did send you down there for a reason - but it's fine. Understandable. Easily fixed." She breathes in, slowly, deliberately enough that you hear her intake of breath over her vox - and she lets this out in a shuddering sigh. A moment later, she turns towards you once more.

"If you still want to be useful instead of the lying piece of shit you've proven yourself to be, Chitose Yuma, you'll go and lead the Black Templars to the teleporation facility. You DO remember where that is, right?"

[1/2]
>>
>>31933761
Well, Midori DID act rashly and ended up getting temporarily killed.
>>
>>31934015

You nod here, unable to speak. Unable to even breathe. It's...Malal's never been this angry at you before. Never this venomous. Never this terrifyingly hateful. "Y-yes, I d-"

"REALLY?" Malal's sudden shout is loud enough to short her vox speakers out - and for a moment, you hear her unfiltered voice, broadcasted out to everyone in the hall, crackling with static. "IS THAT THE TRUTH, OR IS THAT ANOTHER FUCKING LIE, YUMA?"

N-no, you manage to stammer out, shaking your head furiously at the face of Malal's wrath. No, of course not. You're...you're not lying now. You know where it is. You'll lead the Black Templars. You just - earlier, you didn't think--

"OH! So THAT explains it!" Malal growls. "You DIDN'T THINK! You weren't THINKING AT ALL!" You step back as the Culexus moves toward you, her shoulders bunched. "Did you fucking think I give you orders just for the FUN of it, Yuma? Do you think I do it for my HEALTH?"

N-no--

"THEN WHY DIDN'T YOU DO IT LIKE I FUCKING ORDERED YOU TO?!"

Please--

"Excuse me, hello," A different voice carefully ventures out from behind you, and both you and Malal turn to look at Alondight wheeling forward, a careful smile on her face. "Is anything the matter? Forgive me if I'm interrupting anything, but I was under the impression that we were..." she taps her fleshmetal wrist with a claw, in a mirror of Malal earlier. "...pressed for time, as it is? Surely this can be settled later." Alondight smiles at you, and you're struck with the realization that she's not just hurrying this up, but she's actually rescuing you.

"...Sorry, Alondight." Malal replies after a while, her vox-filter switching on again. "There's been a change of plans. Yuma here will be leading you to the teleportation facility. I need to attend to something very important for a minute or so." It's here that she nods at the High Marshal. "Don't worry, I'll do my best to catch up before it's go time. I wouldn't miss it for the world."

[2/3]
>>
>>31934015
>and Haruka already did tell you that you did nothing wrong

>>
>>31934031

"See that you do, Miss Malal." Alondight bows, a graceful movement despite her wheels - and begins to drag you by the hand towards her assembled Templars. "Come now, Yuma. You have to lead my Templars to wherever this telephone facsmilie is. They've been standing at attention for a while now, and they're getting rather snippy."

How do you react?

[x]Allow yourself to be pulled away. That's...you don't need to tell her anything more. Don't waste your rescue.
I will admit I'm hungering to see Malal react to the rest of Yuma's mistakes, but that would mean a smaller amount of guilt to carry so...

First anons backed Yuma mind sexually assaulting a weakened and fragile girl a, and then demonize her for it.

Now, they're all clamoring for her to come completely clean in front of her Rank leader who's already thinking infinitesimally low of her right now and, just admitted she quite frankly terrified of the fact she knows she's dying today and she can't stop it. Which will make Malal think even worse of the one girl she's banking on surviving this.

This is true, and why "Yuma" has distanced herself from Kyoko recently.
>>
>>31934415
But not telling Malal makes the better story here though. I generally agree with that group but not telling is absolutely the right choice from that perspective.
>>
>>31934415
it doesn't always, but Decu has certainly delivered.
>>
>>31934391
Even though I was against telling Malal the truth, I'm actually okay with the outcome. Yuma's pretty much frazzled and losing her mind over everything, which is perfectly acceptable considering the situation, and Malal is actually losing control of a situation for once (I do like chessmaster characters and I like Malal personally, but it does get old when everybody seems to think she can foresee each and every single action, no matter how insignificant).

What I don't exactly like is the feeling that most of the people voting this way is doing it to either stick it to Malal or stick it to Yuma.

that was a mis-count by decu. a better example would be midori's "get fucked" comment. We got shit over for that eventually, and it had a visible result on how things came out.

Walpurgisnacht is nobody's finest moment, anon.

Sure, Yuma fucked up but it made her the Meguca Malal needed her to be,

And WPN is obviously a rapidly escalating poor of shit that even Malal couldn't keep up with, or she wouldn't have been caught out by those fuckers jumping Murderface and Kharn. So yeah, she's a little on edge, especially given that she knows pretty much no-one is making it out of there, and she's kinda lashing out at Yuma.

>>
>>31934449
I really like to see this rare side of Malal, by keeping everything so close and withholding keys from even her closest subordinates, things are going wrong with the 'plan'. Things are going out of control, chaos is building as the barrier between reality ans the warped realm witches reside in thins before the arrival of the modern apocalypse.

Malal is learning she can't carry the world on her shoulders of, but she tries to because no one else can either.
>>
>>31934578
>a character we barely knew or cared about?
A character that the players barely knew, but that Midori was very familiar with, and who Midori obviously cared about as her only friend.
Not only that, but Mirai had been talking with Malal and Godoka for much longer than Midori, seemed to have been let in on the plan, and by losing her we lost a prime source of information on both Godoka and Malal's plan.

You try to stop in your tracks, to halt your progress - but Alondight's grip on your wrist is too strong, and even with your friction boots, you can't get enough traction to counter the High Marshal's wheel-assisted pull.

No, no. You can't leave like this. You can't let it end like this. You have to tell her everything. She'll understand, even if she's mad. That's the important thing. You did nothing wrong! You need to tell her everything so that she'll understand and be okay with things when she gets back with the group later!

"Stop fidgeting and fighting, please," Alondight hisses at you. "Don't you see? Your Miss Malal is already clearly irate, way past the point of understanding. It can wait until after the battle, young lady! Whatever it is, it can't be as important as the task we're about to carry out!"

No! No, you have to tell her! It's important that you do! Malal will understand, she's always been the cool-headed and understanding one, and--

"WHY did you think I pulled you away from there?!" The High Marshal's wheels skid to a halt. "I overstepped Officio rules and traditions by butting right in between what is obviously a disciplinary action! Do you know why?" She gestures towards Malal, the Culexus already making to leave. "I felt her killing intent all the way over here! Do you understand that, Yuma? She was angry enough to kill you."

...No. No way. Malal wouldn't.

You shake your head, taking advantage of Alondight's distraction, running back towards Malal. To tell her everything, not just over the vox but by your own lips. She'd appreciate that, at least she'd know you were serious about being sorry--

The screech of accelerating wheels behind you cuts you off. Agh, fucking foreigners and their stupid wheels, she's going to try dragging you away again!

[1/2]
>>
>>31935004
Phone has no ctrl key

Also, I'm a tits guy, but I'd go hetero for her
>>
>>31935015

"Yuma. Don't. Be. STUPID." Alondight growls, her cold fleshmetal hand wrapping around your wrist again, the points this time digging into the leather, painfully sharp. "Let Miss Malal handle things. We have to--"

"What the fuck is it now?!" Malal also shouts, noticing the commotion. "Fuck's sake, Yuma, I told you to lead them where they're supposed to go! Can't you even handle that--"

No time for a vox-blurt. No time to unhelm and shout it to her.

You compress your memory of what you did to Girl A - that shameful, buried memory - and pulse it right into Malal's quiet, closed-off mind. Using all your strength to punch through the defenses she'd always had up, even around you, even around the Ninth. She grunts in pain here, rocking back on her heels as if she'd been physically struck - before she freezes in place, a gasp rasping from her vox-speakers.

There. There, now you've told her. No, you've shown her everything.

You did nothing wrong, and she should be proud of you for doing what you had to--

"CHITOSE YUMAAAA!"

The entire hall stops at Malal's loud, deafening, vox-amplified scream of rage. Your eyes go wide, your breath catches in your throat, and you realize with a cold, sinking feeling that you've just made the second worst mistake of your life.

You were expecting the punch. As you watched Malal storm down the steps of the throne and march her way down the aisle, fists clenched as she all but stalked towards you - you were expecting her hate and anger to be expressed by something physical.

It was rumored that Malal, before contracting, was something of a hooligan - a yankee that crouched in front of convenience stores and beat up anyone who looked at her funny with her fists. Violence was something innate to her, and you found yourself thinking that as you coughed blood onto the inside of your helmet's faceplate, from having your liver and lungs brutalized with an unforgiving punch through your breastplate.

You also expected the second punch after that. And the third. With Malal screaming your name all the while. Cursing you and hating you in the same breath.

What you didn't expect was her crying. Her sobbing with a rage that could only be described as futile, impotent, despite its fury. Despite the fact that Enyo had to come up behind her, lock her arms underneath the raging Culexus' and pull her away - while the other knights formed a barrier between the both of you.

"YOU FUCKING IDIOT!" Malal roars. "YOU KILLED US! YOU KILLED EVERY SINGLE FUCKING ONE OF US, YOU SELFISH LITTLE PIECE OF SHIT! I TAUGHT YOU TO BE BETTER THAN THAT! I TAUGHT YOU TO BE SMARTER THAN THAT!"

"Please, Malal-san," Enyo says quietly. "Please, this isn't the time."

"WHAT THE FUCK DID SHE DO TO YOU?!" Enyo could've been trying to plead with a wall with the amount of attention Malal gave her. "SHE WASN'T EVEN HERSELF! JESUS CHRIST, YUMA, ALL SHE WANTED WAS TO BE LEFT ALONE AND ASSEMBLE HER FUCKING GUNS! I JUST TOLD YOU TO CHECK UP ON HER, NOT TEAR HER MIND APART!"

You had to know! Y-you had to! You didn't mean to--

"I TRAINED YOU!" Malal's vox-speaker shorts out again, revealing her true voice, and you very nearly sink to your knees as you hear how hoarse - how bleak - it is. "I TRAINED YOU PERSONALLY! YOU KNEW FUCKING WELL WHAT THAT COULD DO TO SOMEONE! AND YOU STILL DID IT ANYWAY!"

It's here that the berserk Culexus finally manages to break free of Enyo, reaching for you - and she would've done so, had not it been for the knights pushing her back. "You killed us. You fucking hear me, Yuma? You killed us. Not just Cavefish and the rest, but them, too. The entire fucking Templars."

[3/4]
>>
>>31935048

"Come, now, Miss Malal..." Alondight rolls forward, interposing herself between the both of you, her smile still there but...shaken now. Uncertain. "Whatever Yuma has done, surely it's not that bad as to condemn all of us to an early grave? We are still here, as well as our resolve. You can't mean to just write us off like that, even if this is a debt being repaid."

"..." Malal glares at Alondight, no mean feat considering her face is hidden by her helmet - before she shrugs Enyo's grip off of her again. "All you had to do was do what I wanted you to, Yuma." She doesn't turn to face you - rather, she seems to be doing all she can NOT to look at you. "You had one job. One. Job. How did you make this worse than I've ever planned for it to be? How did you go from being my most trusted subordinate to a shitnado of bad decisions in...three hours?"

She finally looks at you, and you see her shoulders droop. "Are you that afraid to die? I'm doing my best to make sure that doesn't happen, and this...this is what I have to hope for." Malal shakes her head. "You, and what's...what's left of her."

Silence. Utter, dead, silence.

"Go." Malal lets out a sigh. "Just...go. Go to the Teleportation Facility. We'll proceed as planned. I'll...do my best to see what can be salvaged from here." She looks at Enyo, and then at Alondight. "Sorry for that. It hasn't been a good week. It's..."

"Nothing to apologize for," Alondight says quickly, smiling once more. "The days past hasn't been kind to anyone, not with this giant cackling sword hanging above our heads. Stress is inevitable, but it's how we deal with it that matters." She squeezes your shoulder. "I'll take responsibility for this one. May the First Knight and the Blessed Lady guide you, Miss Malal."

[4/5]
>>
>>31935057

"Yeah." Malal glances at you again, before turning away. Looking the most tired and defeated that you've ever seen her. "Yeah, I hope so."

"Come now, Yuma, we've wasted enough time." Alondight says crisply, dragging you again. "We have a death to earn, and a world to save."

This time, you let her. No longer fighting, no longer protesting. Just...allowing the High Marshal to do what she wished.

Yeah. You still have a world to save.

Even if yours feels like it's already ended.

Four hours before our appointed time of death, it was sweltering, bumfucking hot. That wasn’t to say it was hot outside – strictly speaking, Japan was rather nice this time of year – but rather, that we weren’t afforded any kind of adequate preparatory facility and had spent the last twelve hours and change in full armor. We were hoping to be afforded the time to shower and stretch when we reached the Officio, but right at that moment, most of us would have settled for some water and a toilet break.

The latest travel travesty (travelsty?) and, in any other situation, grave insult that would surely require blood reparations or somesuch (I’ll have to check the handbook if I make it back) was a bus, a normal civilian fucking bus, now loaded with thirty-six women in ebon-black armor and one pasty middle-aged man trying desperately to pretend he understood what was going on. To make matters worse, he had the dubious fortune of having Trinity sitting within glaring distance – she had all the charm of a sock filled with poisonous spiders even on the best of days (with a disposition to match).

Admittedly, that wasn’t entirely unintentional. Call it passive-aggressive if you will, it-

Well, it was just passive-aggressive, mostly. Freak the locals out enough and the Ninth won’t book half of the glorious salvation of the world on a Lady-cursed civilian bus.

“…Ma’am.” Enyo must’ve noticed the look on my face as I began to wonder how long I’d have to hold one of my wheels against the floor to saw through it. “We’re passing the tower.” I glanced to her, and she gently tapped the window with her finger.

Oh please. Even if she had told Yuma everything she remembered (which wasn't much since, as Malal said, her memories were sealed with a timed-release), the people who want an interesting story would have chose to mindrip her anyway.

She started to go on about it, but honestly, it went rather over my head. I nodded as she talked, something about a world monument project, and Mitakihara as the pinnacle of humanity’s cultural achievements. They’d tried to replicate a lot of the world’s most recognizable landmarks, but…even when I tried to appreciate it, something just seemed wrong.

Maybe it was the air, or stale candy from the flight, but the sour taste in my mouth seemed to overwhelm everything else, even the glittering parade of landmarks that we’d passed by. It was probably the dying bit, actually, or the look on Enyo’s face.

She hadn’t been home in years, I dimly realized. She hadn’t been home for years, and it was for this. Probably all she could do not to cry.

“Oi,” I interrupted her, nudging her side. “D’you wanna visit your family while we’re here? I won’t tell the High Marshal, she’s got her head up her arse today anyway.”

The look she gave me was priceless, a mix of tired surprise and a pinch of anger, chased away by her usual cool, sulky expression.

“I have already thought about it, and I have no intention to. …Noriko isn’t a strong girl, High Marshal. She doesn’t need to know about any of this, least of all see me when I’m about to die.”

“And the…others?” I added quietly, busying myself with what was left of the two bags of rather squished macarons I’d prepared for the trip.

Bugger. This was probably a metaphor for something. A macaron, sat on and crushed, squeezed between ebon-black talons and eaten by a dead woman. A bit chewy and unsatisfying. If I knew what Kafkaesque meant, this would probably be it. I chewed in silence before awkwardly offering the bag toward her. She didn’t take any.

“…I would rather be allowed to at least pretend I’m going to die a hero.” I winced at that and swallowed.

What does Malal mean when she says Yuma killed everyone. I mean mindraping Girl A was horrible thing, but how do you go from that to everyone dying?

Did Malal have somekind of plan where Murderface would somehow save everyone and Yuma wrecked that?

“I’m getting a bit sick of that ‘oh, poor me, I’m going to die’ thing. D’y’know, El hissed at me until I promised to bring you back alive. It was almost like she had feelings for a second, there. Scared the piss out of me, sure as anything. Do you think I’m going to go back there and tell her I couldn’t save you?” I narrowed my eyes, hardened my stare. No doubt the half-purged remains of a slain dessert pinched between my claws only strengthened the image of deadly seriousness I was projecting.

“No. I think we’re both going to die, Ma’am,” she mumbled coolly, like it was a sodding option.

“Would you call me an oathbreaker, then, Marshal? A liar?”

“…No, Ma’am.” She cracked the tiniest hint of a smile.

“Damn right. I expect you, the Princess, and Callahan back, at least. Somebody needs to tame that woman.” It hurt just a bit. El…well, El was complicated. Not something I wanted to think about right then, and certainly not something I wanted to bring up with Enyo in any kind of depth.

“Ma’am. Yes, Ma’am.”

A quiet giggle, barely audible over the sound of the bus under us (and the gentle whirr as I idly spun my wheels) grabbed Enyo’s attention and mine, and we both sniggered along with it. Callahan was sitting across from us, faceplate raised as she nursed a thermos of lukewarm tea. She looked like hell warmed over – ashen-gray skin with faded, mint-colored hair flowing from the back of her helmet - which by her standards was rather good, actually.

Thanks a lot you noir loving shitlords. Yuma's even more damaged then the original story canon had her. Nothing like having your personal hero call you less then worthless, but being the key instigator to the eradication of two whole offiicio branches as well as probably alot more Magical girl fatalities over the entire event.

Well done.

No hint of fear, of course, or remorse. Vivian was older than the rest of us put together, there was really no denying it – she was an old, haggard veteran when I enrolled, she had been an old, haggard veteran when High Marshal Erebus was still with us, and not even the Librarians seemed entirely sure when she’d contracted. She’d seen a thousand witches come and go and more than her fair share of Walpurgisnachts, or so they said.

Met her husband once – nice gent, looked like a dead man walking, same as her. Must have been ninety or so, and he had the most glorious moustache-

Right, no. I’m not going to spend the last few hours of my bloody life thinking about moustaches. Amazing what comes to mind, though, isn’t it?

“Ah, I didn’t mean to interrupt,” she chirped in her quiet, raspy way. “It’s just…I’m happy you can hold your chin up through this, High Marshal. Not many women in our position can.” It was a little hard to buy from someone who had been all smiles for the entire time I had known her, but one doesn’t complain. “I couldn’t, to be honest. When all I needed to worry about was myself, sure, but never when I had to lead.”

“Her stubborn refusal to understand the gravity of a situation was always one of the High Marshal’s strong points.” Enyo smirked over at me. I kicked her in the ankle with a wheel, letting it spark off her armor with a momentary screech.

Three hours before our appointed time of death, it was unreasonably crowded. The Ninth in all their shortsighted, skinflint glory had made no particular amount of room for the Templars in their Officio, not even for a few short hours, and the lot of us were already tired and restless. Even Enyo was starting to show her irritation, and a small group – O’Connell, Sinclair, Avery, and (of course) Trinity – seemed to be doing their level best to hate the entire country out of existence.

Callahan remarked that when she joined the Templars, they called that sort of attitude ‘initiative’. I wish I could say she was joking, of course, but I spent most of my time as a trainee in a bunk with ‘MY ARMOR IS CONTEMPT. MY SWORD IS HATRED’ gouged into the ceiling, and after a while, it only bothered me because they skipped a bit of the mantra. I suppose whoever did it just didn’t use a shield.

As exasperating as it was to have some of the fine women under me behaving like children, though, the worst was easily the Princess. Which was no particular surprise.

Mordred was fairly new to the Templars – she’d barely seen ten grief seeds, and most of her training was still theoretical. Fresh out of the abbey, just like her sister was the first time we’d met, only ten times worse; Arty was stuck up – IS stuck up – and had a steel rod up her arse twice the size of her sword, but she had the aura of a ruler. She was someone you could respect, even then, someone with a certain noble bearing. Supposedly, every Pendragon was like that in some way or another; Arty carried herself like a hero, Nero’s love for the people that followed her was boundless if a bit inscrutable, and Mordred…

…I hadn’t quite figured Mordred out yet.

She was violent, at least. Had a bit of a sister complex, I think; she was the sort of recruit you’d have trouble with no matter what you did with her, and it was made all the worse by her family’s blood and the expectations it set for her. The little brat had been pouting furiously since we’d settled in, and had begun pacing as of a few minutes ago, grumbling about the grave insult to our station and Officio, as if that were any sort of concern right now.

“Princess,” Enyo let out a low grumble. “Sit down. Please.” Of course, she picked up on it before I said anything – if anyone could tell when I was about to snap, it was Enyo.

“Marshal, surely you don’t intend to defend these blaggards? Ordinarily we’d be chomping at the bit to execute-“

“Princess.” Sharper, now. …Ah, I knew what was coming next. She turned her gaze to me instead.

“High Marshal,” the Princess barked with just the slightest whine in her voice. “Surely you don’t endorse submitting to these heretics?”

Vividly, I recalled a scene from my own days as a cadet – Arty had said the same thing to High Marshal Erebus once, just once. Near verbatim, with nearly the same tone. The High Marshal backhanded her so hard that the High Inquisitor received a call from Rome just a few minutes later, with the Empress complaining of a migraine. I still think of it now and again.

I’d never tell Arty, of course, but sometimes that thought gets me through the day.

“High Marshal? You agree with me, don’t you?” She really had no idea. I’ve always caught hell for my, ah, questionable sense of gravitas, but Mordred was really, truly ignorant of the situation. I opened my mouth to snap at her, then thought better of it. It couldn’t be helped.

“I’ve already begun composing my letter of complaint, Pendragon. I shall send it the moment we return home from our certain demise.” I reached up to rub my temple with my knuckles, curling the claws of my gauntlet away from my head. Headaches were not typically a problem for me, but once in a while…

“With all due respect-“

“Ah! Since you’re so keen on the subject, do you have any recommendations as to which perfume we ought to spritz it with? Would you like me to use your signet ring for the wax seal?”

Silence. I admit, my self-control may have lapsed a bit.

“How about we send them a dildo with which to fuck themselves? Sounds like a good time, eh? Eh?” No response, just a silence rapidly building into a cold anger. “No? No to the dildo?”

“Ma’am.” Enyo nudged my side, and I relented with a sigh.

For that matter, neither am I. Now is not the time to put our pride before the mission.”

“Ma’am.” The fury in Mordred’s eyes didn’t relent even a bit.

“Those of us who return home can report, and the King and the High Inquisitor can sort out how to deal with this relations disaster. But this is not the time, Pendragon. This is the literal opposite of the time. For the time being, we’re going to bite the bullet, smile to the Ninth’s Culexus when we meet them, and kill ourselves a giant damned witch.”

“Ma’am,” she seethed as she sat back down. Pouted just like her big sisters, only not quite as cute.

Two hours before our appointed time of death, we met with Lady Malal, leaving Callahan in charge in our absence. Left her my card, too, with the quiet recommendation she order pizza, or ice cream, or something to get everyone out of their own heads. Not a luxury Marshal Karasawa and I could afford, nice as it would have been, and she wasn’t too keen on letting me see her sister, either.

Shame, I’d heard she was a looker. But I wasn’t going to press it, not now. Maybe that would be what I’d do if I made it back: sleep with Enyo’s sister. Good a reason to come back as any, right? March off to war, and fight all the harder to return to your girl back home. That you hadn’t met yet.

I worried then that I’d started to crack. …Really, the whole time, I’d been trying to think of everything but Walpurgisnacht. It was what it was: a horrible, grim, cackling reality that was going to claim the lives of fifty-four brave women today, bare minimum. I should have let them stay. I should have forced them to stay. If we were already destined to die, it ought to have been me and Enyo, and that ought to have been enough. And it wasn’t, and it was all I could do not to scream.

…Dame von Seckendorff, please, please protect these brave, stupid girls. I don’t know if I can, and Erebus’s bloody Lady surely won’t. Please let some of them go home alive. Just one would be enough.

“She’s here.” Enyo stiffened up next to me and I followed suit, locking my wheels in a practiced but precarious balance as Lady Malal marched toward us in long, hurried strides.

…Just one. Please.

You...don't understand storytelling, do you? The MC can't always make the best decision, or else that would make for a very boring story; the outcome would always be on the positive. You have to have some negative consequences in there, and the players choosing the bad choices do 2 things.

1). Finally gives us actual consequences
2). Helps explain why Yuma despises Chiaki

And Deculture does it fucking wonderfully.

>This was written by TwiceBorn!

I was dead, my body just didn't know it yet.

All I could feel was fear. Bowel-clenching, absolute fear that rooted me in place, kept me from moving or begging for mercy or even running away. My frozen mind couldn't comprehend anything else: not the sting of the dozen wounds I wore like a dress; not the trickle of warm piss running down my legs; not the sight of the rest of my squad scattered about like chaff, moaning in pain or bleeding out into the ground.

My killer was a Witch, some poor sparkle who had one too many bad days and decided to take it out on the rest of the world. Maybe she was a cute little blonde with pigtails, maybe she was a tall beauty with long, straight black hair like those princesses from old times; whatever she used be, the creature before me seemed to be made of blurred and faded blocks of color, watery chunks of red and blue and purple piled into a loose humanoid form. Teeth the shape of paint brushes, claws in the image of pencils. There was something to be said for being killed by a bad post-modern painting, but I wasn't sure what it was.

The Witch roared. A symphony of sounds that never should have been heard together, with a pinch of hatred and grief to taste. Its body, already looking like madness made manifest, twisted into some new perverse shape that was the bane of sanity. I tried to muster every last drop of my remaining strength to do something, anything, even if it was raising my weapon or grabbing the nearest squaddie and getting the hell out, but the best I could do was numbly take a step back. Too afraid to fight, too afraid to even cower. As it reached down to tear me apart, all I could think of was my poor squadmates, and how badly I'd failed them as their leader. I should have been smarter, I should have been more decisive, I should have sent them back and tried to hold the Witch off by myself. Shoulda, woulda, coulda.

Then, salvation came soaring in on black-pinioned wings.

Her raven hair was cut short, almost brutally short, coming down only to her chin. Her eyes were a dark violet, behind red-rimmed glasses that did nothing to disguise the grim focus that burned within. Her trim, lithe figure was adorned by a laced skirt uniform, rendered a splotchy black by weeks-old blood and grime that she never bothered to clean. She held a M95 anti-materiel rifle in one hand and a grenade launcher in the other, with a small, scarred shield clasped to her right wrist.

She was Girl A. The Warmaster's favored pet. An addict, a bum, a drunkard, the target of gossip that I admit I didn't abstain from. She was one of the top Vindicares, a vicious killer through and through, and the mask she wore was the visage of murder.

She opened up with a volley of explosives. Brilliant bursts of orange flame, blooming from the Witch's form like flowers. The sight of it made my body ache—an ache, I realized, that came from being sliced up by shrapnel let loose by the detonating grenades. The pain triggered my training and I sprinted to my squadmates, dragging them into cover and away from the crossfire.

Did she come here to save us, or to just kill the Witch? I wasn't sure then, and I'm still not sure now. If she did, it certainly was a classic Murderface rescue: liberal amounts of weapons-fire, collateral damage unheeded, for only the destruction of the target mattered. It might have been just dumb luck that I didn't get hit by a stray bullet or got vaped by a misplaced bomb. But at the time, I didn't care. My life span had been expanded by another handful of seconds, and when I felt my cheeks covered by an unfamiliar wetness, I realized they were the tears of relief.

Once my squadmates were safe, I risked a glance over my shoulder. She was still at it, blasting the Witch with enough firepower to cripple a battalion, flitting from position to position like a bird. A near-miss shredded a piece of her uniform, leaving a piece of it fluttering behind her like a small cape, like the black-feathered wings of a raven. The Witch's barrier rendered the battlefield into a twisting visual nightmare of light-swallowing blackness and insane color, and between that and her time-twisting powers she seemed to jump in and out, in and out of the shadows.

For every swipe of the Witch's claw, she answered with another volley of gunfire. For every swarm of familiars sent forth, she rendered the battlefield unto ash with bombs. At one point, she dashed up the Witch's goddamn arm and pumped three-hundred rounds from an ancient MG42 in its face, then stuck a handful of grenades in its wounds as it reeled from the assault. Orange fire-blossoms bloomed again as she lept off and emptied a handcannon in mid-air. Round after round, shot after shot, munition after munition...the finest modern tools of death hurled at something that shouldn't exist. Each blow pulverizing the blocky form of the Witch. Each blossom of fire eliciting a symphonic roar of pain.

-

It wasn't long until her work was done. She wasn't even breathing hard, and she seemed more focused on fishing around for her pack of cigarettes as the world bled back into reality. In a couple of moments the rest of the reinforcements arrived—Sayaka Miki, Kyouko Sakura, others. Miki seemed to be yelling something unkind, while Sakura started slapping backs and letting out her signature guffaw. Murderface, for her part, ignored it all. The only thing she seemed to care about was her smoke.

Soon enough, the medics arrived and started tending to our injuries.

I glanced back behind me—for a moment, just a moment—demanding the medic to let me go. When I looked back, though, she was gone, like she was never there.

I never really got to see her again. Nothing too melodramatic: we're both fine, as far as I can tell, it's just that the 9th is a big Officio and we're always busy, and the timing never quite felt right. I got a peek at her when she got officially crowned Warmaster, but I didn't really get the chance to go up to her at the time. Too many other girls crowding around her, you know? And I'm not the best with crowds.

But one day...one day I'll find her again. I'll find her and tell her what she deserved to be told, that day when she delivered me from death.

------

“There was once a girl in the forest who lived alone—no parents, no husband, no children. She worked hard every day, tilling the little field she'd cleared among the trees, keeping her chickens and her one aging cow. But every afternoon came a raven, with dark, unfriendly eyes and black-pinioned wings that made it blend with the shadows. Every afternoon would come by and peck at her field and bother her chickens and cow, and sit atop a branch and caw and caw as if to mock the girl. So she cursed the raven and threw rocks at it, and wished fervently it would go away.

Then one day a wolf stalked the woods, and found the girl alone in her home. The girl screamed and wept for someone to save her, and begged the Shieldmaiden for aid. And behold! Down from the branches swept the raven, and pecked and scratched at the wolf until it fled, blinded and stung by a dozen wounds. For the raven, in pecking at the girl's fields and bothering the girl's animals, had made itself an unruly but loyal neighbor, and considered the girl as its own.

>"It's interesting" is being given more for the end result
Do not deny that quite a few people voted for the mindrip simply because they wanted more drama to occur.

>"It's interesting" isn't even the reason why most people voted for it in the first place
I don't see any of this. People have been defending the action, saying that it lead to a more interesting end result.

>>31935356
Yuma's also been established as a bit unstable and depressed. Such as her reaction to the death of her parents. Plus, as mentioned, all her visions of Malal dying and the fact that as the person closest to Malal, she's been having to deal with her secrecy BS longer than anyone.
>>
>>31935365

So do not be so ready to sneer and scorn your fellows, my sisters, even the lowest of the low. For the Blessed Lady placed her love and faith in all of us, from the greatest Warmaster to the greenest initiate, and to think yourself above a fellow sister is to think yourself above Her.

May the Shieldmaiden guard the faithful, and watch over the righteous.”

I chose what I thought would lead to an outcome which I would enjoy reading. I enjoyed reading this outcome immensely.

Furthermore, your vote is no more valid than my own. We just wanted different things out of this story. I'm sorry that my preference won, but that's just the way things go. There can only be one winning vote, after all, so stop being bitter and roll with it instead of impotently raging at the result.

Anyway, it makes me feel a little off put knowing that Ariman had been able to woo the former warmaster of the Black Templars into being her Essquary with apparently little else aside from charisma and a devotion to the Divine Lady. But then again that means Kharn was strong enough to kill two warmasters, one hopped up on a golden weapon and the sacrifice of 10i0 willing souls as well in one fight makes her even more frightening.

I'm hearing a lot of whining, but has the story quality suffered as a result just because "bad things happened"?
I think some people may be treating this more like a game than a story. In terms of game, we're losing points left and right, but in terms of story, this is turning into some stomach-clenching drama and it's pretty cool.

Not totally sure, but I think its when the players had Midori try to fight the the winged fragment in the barrier arc and nearly die, instead of trying to talk the winged fragment down.
>>
>>31935467
While I admit the atmosphere is a lot deeper and more emotional then most of the other archs, the reasons for it are all really shitty. "What could happen" and "I want to see something interesting:" are the weakest excuses to try and make an already damaged girl even worse then she was already established to be,

And I have enjoyed reading it immensely! This has been possibly the best part of the quest so far, for me.

Watching somebody who was loyal, smart and compassionate fuck up, repeatedly, and with increasing severity, because of the crushing pressure of knowing that everyone she knows is going to die in four hours. An exploration of just how a single bad decision can spiral on you, on how somebody can go from being a model soldier to a totally panic stricken and near hysteric fuckup when she wakes up on the day that the world ends.
>>
>>31935498

After successfully slapping a berserk Kharn's shit, the players voted to tell the fourth and final fragment of Chiaki's soul, the most powerful and I think the incarnation of despair, to "get fucked" when she started her pre-fight banter.

In the ensuing fight, Midori died, and her friend's intervention saved her, at the cost of her own chance at returning to life. It may have also cost us one fourth of Chiaki's whole being, since the fourth personality mirror has been vacant, but we don't know for sure--especially since the other personality fragments aren't talking about her like she's gone for good.

>>31935548
Dude, QMs put trap choice ALL THE TIME. Is this your first quest?
>>
>>31935467
Even if the decision was absolutely retarded on the player's part, the quality of writing that decu has been putting out in this flashback feels like some of the best in the quest so far. Really damn impressed at the level of emotion he is able to have the characters display.

Plotwise I'm still not sure how much I liked how it turned out, but I won't deny it's been damn entertaining on how he is pulling it off. So I'm able to forgive to players just because I'm really interested to see how he progresses it from the new direction.
>>
>>31935555
No they didn't, loosing two hours was an untelegraphed side effect of the choice, it wasn't a factor in the decision. Dumbfuck.
>>
>>31935561
Take a picture of her and caption it with [screams internally] and you're good to go.
>>
>>31935555
This is not strictly speaking true.

I get the impression that the mindrape was supposed to last only a short time, however for some reason unknown (though obviously related to Homura being a time/dimension-traveler) to us, it lasted hours instead.
>>
>>31935571
You're forgetting that the vote to say "Get Fucked" also included charging into the fight.
With knives.
When the fourth fragment had familiars armed with swords and spears.
And charged straight ahead, instead of using her Callidus cloaking powers to go invisible.
>>
>>31935528
How is it wasted if Decu turns a "bad decision" into cool writing? For all we know, doing the "right thing" could have resulted in something not as cool. And certainly not something as dramatic.

Also, didn't the guy who wrote Pacific Rim say "In a world where nobody dies, there are no heroes"?

>>31935581
Decu might be mischievous, but he's also a good writer and wouldn't put a literal "if you choose this then the writing will suck" option in.
>>
>>31935500
I think the thing is that a lot of people voting are actually not /tg/-regulars. Many readers don't see this as a game but just as a story, so 'bad' choices make sense.
And that's perfectly fine imo. It's roleplaying, good or bad is your call.
>>
>>31935571
General consensus is, the fourth mirror that's blank is the one that was supposed to house "Chiaki's Fragment" the Murderface who was sloshed at the bar, and was the only one of the four left alive to make a composite of. Dildos is the winged fragment, Braids is moemura fragment and Murderface is the armored fragment

>>
>>31935500
Games and story can co-exist, but in a good quest the story is way better than the game aspect if you ask me. Maybe there's just personal opinion, though, between rollplay and roleplay.
>>
>>31935597
Meticulously going over sealed memories behind a time lock the strongest Culexis that ever existed madeisn't something easy to do. Yuma realized she took over an hour and a half to see a memory that lasted all of forty five seconds.

Malal told her explicitly that Girl A's memories were sealed by herself and Yuma still decided (because faganons made her) to try and break into it.

This is the part that people seem to gloss over, yes. Midori didn't get shanked because she insulted her vastly-stronger opponent; she got shanked because she was a squishy who ended up charging through legions of armed familiars, instead of playing to her strengths as a squishy.

Midori is our waifu because I and some other guys voted to shoot her knees off when we first met her.

It had nothing to do with the interrogation.
>>
>>31935555
>>31935588
Not so much. Yes, we made the decision at the end of the day, but it was justified in the narrative. Deculture translates the vote into a story, we had no actual say in the motivations of the character, and the option was always presented by Deculture so he is indirectly acknowledging that yes, it does fit a given interpretation of the character. From a purely narrative point of view, everything that was done, was done because Yuma wanted to do it.

Should we blame her? No, of course not, blaming a fictional character for anything is fucking stupid. Should we hate her? Sure, if you want. Everyone has a different opinion of different characters anyway.
>>
>>31935737
That's why she's still alive, she's our waifu because Chiaki raped her.

Its kind of funny to think about this whole mess. If just one person had voted differently, this flashback would have gone COMPLETELY differently. We would have met Kharn. And then who knows what would have happened.

I honesty don''t give a fuck of this flashback. Nothing will change regardless, Malal will die, all her friends will die and Yuma is still a shitty character.

>>31935560
Is Shitnado going to have any sequels?
>>
>>31935777
I dunno. I figure Deculture will take the events into account somehow. There are many things that could come from this.

-Chiaki learns that Yuma mindraped her. Chaos follows

-People learn that Yumas actions were (somehow apparently) responsible for the loss of the templars and all other culexus.

-Imagine how Kyoko and Sayaka will react? Kyoko learning that Yuma mindraped one of her best friends, and Sayaka learns that the reason Murderface was so messed in the head might have been Yumas fault all along.

Someone who heard Malal survives, blames Yuma (because Malal is the best known seer) and seeks revenge on Yuma.

And so on.

There is a lot of potential writing that comes from what happened in this quest.
>>
>to top this all off, we're going to probably end up killing Yuma's girlfriend in the future whether we want to or not

This is going to get worse before it gets better.
>>
>>31935797

Honesty regardless of how this ends, it''s making me hate the characters more.

Malal being super secret, Yuma being well what had happen so far.

That last decision on whether we tell her or not was not a major one in my opinion. Just whether we told her we fucked up or not. '

Main point in being since it was close, Deculture didn't try a revote for it unlike mindrape/no mindrape

and in the end it doesn't matter,= since their all going to die.

the only thing I gained from it is that all the characters here besides cavefish, i grew to hate

>>
>>31935902
Yeah, we finally got to see a more human side of Malal.
>>
>>31935863
Fair enough, that is your opinion and you are entitled to it.
Personally I found it made me like the characters more, Yuma became a lot deeper and more sympathetic, Malal became a lot more of a person than a Machiavellian schemer, and seeing even a little of the dead Culexus, like Cavefish, makes them that much more tragic.
>>
>>31935863
I don't really understand the Malal hate?

She is Yumas superiour officer. She told her to check on Girl A and Kharn. A superiour officer does not need to explain orders to a subordinate. Especially given that Malal was incredibly busy at the time.

Malal is secretive and all to be sure, but in this flashback I don't really see it.

When Yuma contacted Malal and asked what was up with Girl A, Malal told Yuma everything that had happened to Girl A and Kharn. There was no secrecy.

Malal would have had no way to know that Yuma would decide to mindrape Girl A, then lie about it, then run to Haruka instead using the last chance to see Kharn.
>>
>>31935902
which intern made Yuma a more complex character since she was literally fed up with Malal's Soriwa Himitsu desu bullshit and wanted straight answers.
>>
>>31935843
Your just basically listing off reasons on why Yuma should be killed.

and your proving my point, Yuma's a piece of shit.

I don't even pay attention to flashback arcs but it got really bad but considering the playbase has grown, I wonder what will happen to Chiaki's decisions.

While they did this to make the narrative/Yuma more interesting (The latter didn't work imo made her worse then the idols we dealt wtih)

What make me worried they will pull this shit off when it's chiaki's turn to step up.
>>
>>31935902
Yeah, I can attest to that. She's more interesting and nuanced now that she isn't perfect magical batman.
>>
>>31935888
Huh? It was actually asked what most people would have Chiaki do if Yuma confessed and apologized, and I think virtually everyone thought Chiaki would first punch Yuma, and then forgive.
>>
>>31935902
>>31935915
Exactly, Malal isn't some omniscient plan factory, she's a person who can get upset, get angry and get so overwhelmed she completely misjudges things.
>>
>>31935965
I can see this happening. Considering Chiaki's opinion of herself, doing more than that would probably make her feel like a hypocrite.
>>
>>31935933
>and wanted straight answers.
She did give straight answers, though. She gave them, gave all the details she knew, and Girl A's memories confirmed that everything that Malal had told Yuma was everything that Malal knew about the matter.
>>
>>31935991
That's true considering that she is aware of the fact that she's done much worse.
>>
>>31935652
>>31935706
See, I actually voted for "Get fucked," but that was all I voted for. The berserker charge, not as much.
>>
>>31935916
Fair point on Malal, I'll give you that but Yuma as a character while supposedly more deep, made me hate her guts.

Something about her mindset just got to me in a bad way concerning justifying on her action with her girlfriend, mindraping, and etc.

I understand it was due to everyone will die, I understand that but considering that "I did nothing wrong" pissed me off.

If she had said "Fuck off Malal" I would had approved but the way she wanted 'everything to be back to normal"

well it sucked
>>
>>31935965
The inital responses were for Chiaki to pull Justice out and shoot Yuma's chest off her torso with a hail of magical bullets.

Then in thread three people had calmed down enough to suggest Chiaki beat her to death and then puke on her corpse, then it finally lessoned to beating her into a coma, puking on her then accepting the apology.
>>
>>31935941
Yeah, in-character, this has prettymuch wrecked Yuma. It will take a lot for her to redeem herself.

Still, I hope people will atleast try to maintain story consistency. That is to say, not vote for options that have Chiaki screw Yuma (since Chiaki does not remember, and such voting would be meta).
>>
>>31935631

Actually, Decu already mentioned that the Winged Fragment was successfully subsumed by Chiaki after the Midori arc. Dildoes is another personality entirely.

Winged Fragment just doesn't want to show her face because she's either a bitch or shy. Or both.
>>
>>31936022
Yeah, there have been a few such votes.

A more recent example is the Braids incident. Chiaki insulted braids of Sayaka and pissed Braids off. Except several people who voted for that option did not see the insult.

Though I guess options like that are inevitable in a longrunning quest like this. All in all, they have been pretty rare.

Heck, its possible the reason why the consequences for the Midori incident were relatively light was because Deculture realised that the option could have been misunderstood.
>>
>>31936023
Yuma's 14, came from a broken home where her father would routinely put out his cigarettes on her head, gets her hands burned regularly, was often preemptively beaten by her mother so her father wouldn't bother, was implied to have been either molested or raped by her father in drunken rampages, and then learned after she made her *completely selfless wish* that her parents ended up both dying anyway... A mind like that will instinctively look for ways to shift the blame somewhere.
>>
>>31936023
>"I did nothing wrong" pissed me off.
Yeah, I can see that. I just read it as a panic reaction, Haruka handed her a justification for the short term, and she's grabbed onto it to keep the guilt down, at least for a while. Then again this could be entirely in my head so I'm not arguing with you.
>>
>>31936026
That is complete bullshit. Please stop talking out of your arse in order to stir shit.
>>
>>31936039

On the contrary, didn't Decu say that the barrier fragments and the Deagle souls are completely different set of entities ?

Just because we had a similar set in one doesn't mean the other must have the same set. The fourth mirror could be any version of Homu that isn't Braids, Dildoes or Scarred Chiaki right now.

Not sure about the first question, but I think someone asked him in a thread if Dildoes was the winged fragment or not. He replied that she was not; so she's somewhere in Chiaki's subconscious, but probably doesn't want to talk since she's all nihilistic and stuff.
>>
>>31936133
What would Wendy do if she learned that Yuma mindraped Murderface? Would she be upset?
>>
>>31936082
She is also a fucking magical girl, got trained by Malal for in which their department consists of mindfuckery, she is more trained to be better then this shit.

Narrative sure, it's wonderful but frankly this made Yuma a very hateful character, she became deep for some anons sure but not liked.

Since this is a flashback as well, it's all so inconsequential
>>
>>31936133
So is wheelie in a wheelchair when she's not transformed?
>>
>>31936133
What do you think of the flashback?

Would it be better if people went with the 'good' options, or do you think the experience ended up being better by not picking them?
>>
>>31936133

>>31935111
Who is your favorite character that hasn't shown up in the main quest yet?
>>
>>31936117
Well, this is another facet of that, Yuma's trying to ratonalize the fact she's making a complete mess of things, by accident. Before Yuma contracted she was blaming herself, but now that she gained a somewhat stable relationship in the officio, she's able to now foist blame somewhere else, like on another MG she dislikes or someone who's acting shifty. (she's misattributing all her fuck ups in this flashback on Malal's constant mindgames and misdirection for example.)

>>31936133
High Marshal's the Templar term for Rank leader right?
>>
>>31936171
For Chiaki's story sure, anons will wise up all to save their waifu.

but nothing has change it's just a flashback so nothing is of consequence.
>>
>>31936113
Really, where?

Someday, we should go through all the archived threads and make a FAQ of all questions Deculture has answered. Would be an annoyingly big job though.

Anyway, Murderface and Braids fragments atleast are extremely close matches to the barrier fragments. Dildoes is the only one who did not appear in the barrier.

That being said, Dildoes also said that if every "incarnation" appeared, there would have been hundreds of mirrors.

>Thinking flashbacks never have consequences
We already know this isn't true. The America flashback got Sayaka a second girlfriend.
>>
>>31936191
This technically is of consequence, we're writing Yuma's back story for why she hates Chiaki and Kharn.
>>
>>31936162
>she became deep for some anons sure but not liked.

I like her. I like her more now than I did before. I know that there are at leas a few more anons who feel the same.
>>
>>31936213
Ok I got the thread numbers mixed up. it was three threads in, after Yuma did it people called for blood and then the fourth was where they calmed down and just suggested sever physical punishment for something Chiaki can't remember and isn't going to ever care about..
>>
>>31936191
Just because certain events can't be changed, doesn't mean that nothing can change.
This entire point in time was glossed over in the present, so that these details could be filled in during a flashback, certain relationships and motivations could be altered, and things prepared for the future.
Don't say that there's no consequences until we're back in the present and there are no consequences we have to deal with.
>>
>>31936225
The fact she hates them for her own screwup makes her worse.

However given how emotional these last few threads have been, I cannot believe this will not have consequences.

One way or the other, what happened in this thread will affect the future. Either Chiaki or someone else will eventually learn what happened here. That could have all sorts of consequences.

Kharn is basically forcefully retired because of what happened here. However thanks to this flashback we now know she is completely innocent. She witched because she was stabbed by someone with an unknown blade, and Yuma did not do her job, which presumably ends up with Kharn witching out.

If it comes out that Yuma did not do her job, what effect will that have on Kharn? For all we know, Deculture could use this as an excuse to bring Kharn back to the 9th properly as an instructor or somesuch.
>>
>>31936117

I understand that as they blaming themselves for people hurting them as a means of rationalizing the hurt. Once you pull them out of the shitty situation, sometimes that mindset sticks. 'This can't be right, something has to go wrong because I'm here'.. and then when they find themselves actually causing it, their reality crumbles and they push the blame elsewhere because all this time they only ever blame themselves a coping means, not really dealing with guilt over one's real actions.
>>
>>31936223
Nothing of consequence, she's got Kyoko

>>31936225
Point, but again it's Murderface's story and also after all the shit has happen, she has no right to hate on them

Also most of the time anons here played smart, but since this is Yuma and a flashback they want to create a more 'deep' character.

Since their all dead and do not have to worry about screwing over who it's fine.

Again no consequence, just writing a background story for a character which will only be minimal.
>>
>>31936291
People were on the forgiveness train right from the thread where it happened. Sure there were a few people baying for blood, but it was not the majority.

She'd be kneejerk upset, then probably light up a cigarette then start asking about the circumstances. In the end, Malal is shady as fuck and doesn't tell people shit, she'd still be mad but could probably understand why Yuma did it. Murderface has a memory like swiss cheese anyway.

>>31936168
Not anymore. That's going to change again real soon.

>>31936171
I think that choosing the 'bad' options let Decu explore some interesting themes and, for what feels like the first time in a while, let him write dark. And that's his strong suit. While painful, I think the writing really has been spectacular and Yuma's actions have humanized her and Malal by giving them both kind of awful traits.

Basically, I've really enjoyed them.

>>31936182
It was actually Raleigh, so I don't know anymore. Probably Ruri's waifu.

Oh, or Nero. But I guess she showed up in the Kharn flashback.

>>31936183
The Templars are a sort of pseudo-separate organization. They more or less follow the Second's command but aren't firmly under their jurisdiction; that said, at this point in the timeline, Raleigh is the High Inquisitor's aide, so she may as well be. The Second has its own separate Rank Leaders, though.

(Incidentally, at this point in the timeline, Arturia is still the Equerry.)

>>31936211
Probably eventually, a few people have brought it up.
>>
>>31936308
Kharn was still responsable for witching out and massacring almost all the black templars and personally killing Malal. She took the exile as due punishment for her crimes of turning on her fellow allies. and since she was branded the "Betrayer" for it, she did it willingly.
>>
>>31936308
>Kharn is basically forcefully retired because of what happened here. However thanks to this flashback we now know she is completely innocent.
This. All Kharn wanted was to have a harem of blonde waifus and look how fate treated her.
>>
>>31936337
>Yuma's actions have humanized her and Malal by giving them both kind of awful traits.
Putting the Mal in Malal.
>>
>>31936294
Then why do the things we did, I just don't understand. Normally if we played Murderface, Kyoko, Midori, etc. Most anons try to make sure they don't fuck up?

I don't get it, if they did it for narritive reasons then it didn't matter.

>>31936334
Maybe but I just don't understand what's going on, will it make it harder on Murderface later on?

Will this type of choosing will continue from now on?

I'm not saying Souji is a trade-up, but I think that Kharn is happier, at least.

So, has Kharn had the entire Pendragon family before?

Knowing Mordred, Arturia and Nero all exist makes me hope Alter and Lily do too, and if they do, Kharn was probably in heaven when she learned about all of them
>>
>>31936422
>Most anons try to make sure they don't fuck up
51% want to fuck up because it's more interesting.
>>
>>31936353
I disagree.

Kharn was stabbed into her soulgem with somekind of unknown dagger which caused her soulgem to start corrupting at an utterly abnormal rate. Kharn did not witch out due to depression or neglect or anything that could be blamed on her.

Malal put Kharn in a silent room and told Yuma to make sure the corruption was still in control. Yuma did not check on Kharn, and then lied to Malal about it. At this point, Kharn has been without checkups for several hours.

Kharn may well blame herself, but thanks to this flashback we know her witch transformation was artificially forced upon her by an unknown party. Kharn is innocent.

Yuma's not a major character, she's shown up all of maybe a dozen times in 200+ threads and for all of them except MAXIMUM CHRISTMAS she was an unlikable jerk. Hell, the only time she was shown to not be a sullen, introverted, anger filled jackass was Maximum Christmas which took place months before Witches Night, and she was a happy young girl.

I don't really know why people voted for mindrape. I voted not to do it. I do admit its resulted in some very powerfull scenes though.

Its very possible that it will make things harder. Yuma has lied about the past and goes on pretending that nothing is wrong. However there are countless ways in which Deculture could have the past catch up with Yuma and by extension the 9th.

Pretty sure Wheels survives, judging by the signatures on Kyouko's invitation to the 2nd. So, at least one Templar.
>>
>>31936503
We assume Yuma's not a major character. Yet.
She may become one by default once enough friends start dying off.
>>
>>31936481
Admittedly thats true. However its a bit hard to see how that would happen? I mean we know Kharn is artificially witching due to outside interference.

The only way she could be blamed is if she manages to beat the effects of the "corruption knife", and then decides to witch anyway, just for kicks/pinky. Possible, but I have my doubts. I guess we will see in the next thread.
>>
>>31936558

Nero could have also been a rider, archer, lancer or even caster. Since she has a personal skill that allows her to imitate any major class skill she can logically fit into all the classes.

Malal is the only person Kharn doesn't get all hot and bothered around.

she did earn her moniker of "The Betrayer" in this event by killing the templars and Malal, so she has to be somewhat cognoscent of what she's doing.

I wonder how Deculture will explain the fact that Wheels has never told anyone that just before everything went to hell, Malal screamed that thanks to Yuma virtually everyone would die. Which then promptly happened.

>>31936652

The answer is always Malal.
>>
>>31936619
Malal's got pink hair, Kharn only care about gold.
>>
>>31936638
Not necessarily. She might not have any memory of the attack or being stabbed with the corruption knife.

If so, she might well blame herself and accept the title "betrayer", out of guilt, because she THINKS it was her fault that she turned into a witch due some personal weakness.

Malal is too secretive, so its possible she did not give QB full details about what happened yet, and she is about to die so the knowledge dies with her.

That would leave Yuma as the only one who would know Kharn was stabbed with the corruption knife. She might well have chosen to keep it a secret out of guilt, fear, whatever.
>>
I don't get all the Malal hate. People are acting like her secret plans make her a jerk, but she's trying to pull one over one not one, but TWO deities.

You think she should go around spouting off her plan to everyone, and getting them all killed in the process? How is it better to go around telling everyone how you're going to save the world if the act of telling them dooms it?

>>31936696
>Nero appreciates love in all its forms and Arty and Mordred tend not to think about it. But probably.

Most of it is training. Either herself, training Templars, or helping to train the Second's other magical girls.

The person before had a point.

Its hard to tell people your plans, if you never know if a deity is spying on you.

Kinda the same issue we have run into with Chiaki actually. Pinky is going to be pissed if (or rather when) she learns we are in communication with the DEagle incarnations.

Theres been lots of wondering if Pinky already knows, since you NEVER know if she is watching everything you do right at that moment.
>>
>>31936878
How do we even know you have a fifth to plead! You might not be US-based!
>>
>>31936839
I meant that considering all the characters we played and intereacted with Malal, it always went "Just trust me" to just keep blindly trusting someone (sure she might give a piece or two but not a clearer picture) it's hard/

For me I don't like her just due to the flashback.

What I don't understand is that this just might make things harder later on so I'm assuming that the flashback has no real consequence.

If players did think so, they would have avoided doing things that might make it harder on murderface and the gang later on
>>
>>31936878
Can you? We know next to nothing about the Fifth, so any information is welcome.
>>
>>31936883
Actually both Madokami, Faust and Malal all said Neither of the Kami could manifest when Malal was around since she kept her suit's limiter as low as she possibly could to prevent either of them manifesting. So she was a literal safe zone and could tell someone anything she knew, the problem was Faust could and probably would torture that information out of anyone who's *NOT* around Malal, since Faust as clearly stated she hates her.
>>
>>31936856
I guess to make it clearer on how the situation on the whole was handled.

I just hope this doesn't bite us in the ass later

>>
>>31936760
Alternatively, the spymaster currently pretending to be kharn murders malal under pinky's orders.
We've got info about post WN kharn - she goes nuts, hallucinates malal and can't accept her death, nearly kills mami for trying to tell her otherwise and is generally completely out of it for a period of a few weeks.
>>
>>31936994
What if voting for mindrape means something doesn't go horribly wrong, that future Chiaki doesn't have a harder time of it?
>>
>>31936939
I'm caring less on the consequences of this, and more the fact that this makes Yuma a creepy rapist. Throw away of everything that Yuma didn't know. So pretend that she doesn't know that the world's fate rested on Girl A.

Her flow of logic was this:
> Malal, a SUPERIOR OFFICER, orders her to do one simple thing.
> Yuma finds Girl A recovering from mindrape, and FREAKS OUT thinking that Malal did it. Mad enough to consider treason.
> Malal tells her up front exactly what happens. Keep in mind that Yuma was the only person she trusted with this information.
> Yuma, in order to satisfy simple curiosity, does something (by her own admission) WORSE than what she accused Malal of. Something that could have killed Girl A.

So you have someone doing something completely reprehensible for completely selfish reasons.

I can kind of get said reasons, but honestly she is lucky Malal didn't kill her right then and there.
>>
>>31937022
In part the Second creates a massive no fun zone all around it, but she (and Enyo) happen to enjoy their work, so it takes up most of their time and energy. I'd imagine you rarely get Rank Leaders that out and out dislike their jobs, though, so that's probably a fairly typical attitude - that said, I'm sure it'd be simple enough to delegate most or all of it.
>>
>>31937026
Well Malal was the one person willing to die to rescue her. When Kharn woke up from that drug and brainwashing stuper Strauss put her in, she probably saw Malal as a goddess in her own mind. Losing an emotional and psychological crutch, potentally at your own hands would make anyone go insane with grief. People should be lucky Risa was there to shoulder most of the grief energy or she might have witched out again.
>>
>>31936956
Pinky manifested to Sayaka when we visited America during a flashback. Malal was nearby at the time, from what I remember.
>>
>>31937047
I cannot see the future. Its possible that Deculture did not originally plan for this flashback to have consequences in the future. I suspect however, that after all the incredible chaos that has happened during this flashback, it would be odd if he chose not to bring this up again. Time will tell.
>>
>>31937070
Malal wanted to. Chariot basically told Yuma that there was enough killing intent in the air that she was forcing herself to not screw the pooch and kill her.
>>
>>31937106
Malal also had her suit's limiter turned up, since she was also outside a silent room that was turned off. All magic negation had to be deactivated for Sayaka to get her mission done.
>>
>>31937126
I'm just saying, if we're doing baseless speculation, what if no mindrape was the option that makes Chiaki's life more difficult?
>>
>>31937026
Its also possible that the madness was a residual side-effect of the corruption knife.

That atleast is something that we will inevitably see again. Malal atleast believed that they were originally after Murderface, and Kharn was a target of opportunity.

So odds are that sooner or later, that group will come after Chiaki again and try to do to Chiaki what they did to Kharn here. Once Chiaki starts investigating, its quite possible that the events of this flashback will be revealed.
>>
>>31937138
a little addendum, this killing intent was only for not checking up on Kharn, something that sounds trivial. When Malal learned what Yuma did to Chiaki, she was fulling willing to beat her to death right then and there with the templars watching.
>>
>>31937106
Malal was also on the other side of a door designed to keep an uncontrollable dissolver contained, and Sayaka needed every bit of her regeneration she could get.
>>
>>31937106
>Malal was nearby at the time
For a given definition of 'nearby'. She also there at the airport, so probably a few meters away.
If Pinky could manifest while Malal was that close, she wouldn't be able to hurt anyone but that doesn't mean she couldn't overhear anything she said.
Pinky would also see whoever Malal was talking with, and could get them when they were away from Malal.

>>31937161
Sayaka also saw Pinky when she and Malal arrived at the airport, not just outside Sabrina's Silent Room.

>>
>>31937180
Well, I would figure that the fact that it was explicitly said that the mindrape causes damage to the mind means that odds are that mindrape was the worse option for Chiaki. Obviously you could come up with any contrived scenario where this is not the case ofcourse, but odds are that Yuma screwed up bad.
