OPENING
>http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F468us4qCUE

Previously: Since arriving upon an unknown chain of islands, a Young Rocket and her friend have become recognized by a village of natives as "Rangers."

Now, with the help of an adolescent taking his first strides into a similar profession of monster hunting, the rocket team seek to find their way back home.

After two islands, they now take a hunting ship to a city outside the dome.

A day out from port and the captain spots a quarry, landing the first blow! With their own skills, and an uneasy alliance they hunt a monster of the sea!

Will they lay waste to this monster?
What wonders await them at the city?

Stay tuned to find out!

ya know, I've given Monhun 3 tries but I never could get into it
>>
>>31921731
Glad to be here, Professor.
I still say a master pastebin with links to all the others would help you out a bit.
>>
>>31921731
FINALLY, a chance to use this image at an appropriate time!
>>
>>31921731

Hey Prof, what MonHun game would you recommend for someone who never played it? Which one is the best?

Or, alternatively, which one do you use for inspiration the most?
>>
>>31922000
If you've got a wii/wiiu mh3 or mh3u are both solid as fuck, and more forgiving, although some people dislike the underwater fighting.
Additionally, the servers are still up, rather than jumping through hoops to play online.
The psp games are similarily great, but have a range of difficulty running from 'whats everyone complaining about' to 'oh god hitboxes why'
>>
>>31922091

I have a wii, yeah. Also a PS3, a 3DS and both PSP/PSV.

... I have a lot of plataform options, actually. Hm.
>>
>>31922000
>>31922091
Pretty much this. Mh3 or 3U are the newest, and have a nice balance of difficulty. The games get smoother as they go, so the newer they are, the easier they are to get into.

MHFU has probably the most content, but the difficulty is pretty brutal, and some of the stuff is clunky.
>>
>>31922156
>>31922091
My entry was with Monhun tri. Though I've been looking at ultimate, I still need to play ultimate... And I'm really interested in 4.

>>31922186
>MHFU
That's released in US now?
>>
>>31922156
3DS version is the same as the wiiu version, minus online capability - You can only connect locally. I tried it, but found it a struggle without the second joystick. The pad you can buy for its pretty solid though.
>>
>>31922186
>Mh3 or 3U are the newest,
I'm confident that MH4 is the newest.
>>
>>31922000
Don't get any of the PSP games. They cause your hands to develop into horrible jagged hooks.

The Wii games are probably the best introduction to the series, with a solid mix of difficulty, ergonomics and aesthetic.
>>
>>31922209
>MHFU
I think you're thinking of Frontier?

MHFU is Monster Hunter Freedom Unite, for the psp. I'm pretty doubtful of the west ever getting the monhun mmos. There's just not enough market for them.

for like years now

I think its free on the PSN with PS+
>>
>>31922209
It always was, you're thinking portable 3rd.
MHFU is clunky as hell though.
If you can manage the DLing and patching, and don't mind rolling pack your psp's firmware, Portable 3rd is goddamn fantastic, although you're stuck with a partial fan translation - more than enough to play the game, but no story to speak of.

And 3U is wonderful, though I definitely preferred 3's multiplayer city to 3U's island hub
>>
>>31922270
Still the coolest goddamn night fight in the games.
I don't care how unbelievably cheesey the effects were, the red eye trails made that fight.
>>
>>31922307
I was fucking pissed at how they mutilated MH3s hubs. You were originally supposed to have 12 players per gate, but they axed it down to 4 so they could put in VOIP which nobody fucking used.
>>
The rope goes taught as it reaches full extension, two kahkori manning a reel to lock it in place as the “fish” thrashes, pulling at the boat, yet to far less avail than such a speedy creature would hope for.

The captain calls out from the crow's nest in common, “Avast ye scurvy murkrows, the Plessie's gettin' pissy real soon! Ready a counter at the bow and port, and throw the starboard 'poon, so we can force it front!” She points to the two birds on the reel, “An' you two get to pullin it in! Me dead grandmother can pull harder than you!”

You see sailors scramble into place, some going bare-handed and others grabbing small hooks and rope to get ready for capture. When the Smolodhan party comes on deck the female shouts up in her own guttural common, “Dead or alive?”

“Alive is preferred, dead if yer skill is poor!”

“You'll see it alive then!” The female roars as she crouches down onto three, heavy blade slung over her back, and with a laugh echoed by the “kitten.”

You extend the barrels from your palms and ready yourself with the deck of the ship before you, Marine and Kurojo stand at your side. Marine smashes her shell-knuckles together and takes a low stance for the battle to come while Kurojo unsheathes his long blade, the Nar-Kage steel shimmering in the light of the day.

“Junior” steps up with his feasible cannon at his side, requiring two hands to steady, his red and yellow leathers spark now and then, buzzing with electricity as his tail flicks back and forth,”Leave this to me little ones, you'll just get in the way.” He mocks, not even bothering to look back at you.
Kurojo's feathers rustle with irritation.
>>
>>31922455
My only issue with the VOIP was that they didnt put a fucking mic in the Wiiu tablet.
>>
The Red Male steps up with his odd mechanical weapon humming with a steady power, his one eye shifts in his scarlet helm as his scale armor glistens like bloody garnets with the sea's moisture. He utters something condescending to the younger one, and the female takes the other side.

The weapon bearers are both in a three legged stance, weapons ready over their backs, just in opposite hands.

You hear a splash, and the monster jump in the water again, shooting out a white beam that carries on for what must be a mile into the sky and back down into the horizon. A short time later, water falls on your head.

That... was water?

Another jump, and it suffers a second harpoon as it's dragged closer, thrashing against the waves with all of its anger, it finally pounces onto the boat, bloody from a wound in the haunch, and another catching right in the muscle of a wing, yet in its rage none of that matters, it stares down the center at your formation of six, opening its mouth as it spreads out its fins...

>[] Stand ground and shoot first!

>>
>>31922546
So hydropump?

I'm not so sure about how quick Marine is, but she and Kurojo should get out of the way since they don't have much options for firing.

>[] Stand ground and shoot first!
Shoot out our Icicle Gun then dodge with Quick Attack. Firing into its fleshy mouth would do some damage, yeah?
>>
>>31922546
>>31922576
Oh, how accurate is Vacuum Wave? It's more of a blunt force, right? Maybe we could tell Marine and Kurojo to dodge and try to hammer in the harpoons more with Vacuum Wave?

This will have to come after we deal with the immediate threat of fish dragon coming down on us.
>>
>>31922546
>>[] Stand ground and shoot first!

time for street cred
>>
>>31922546
>[x] Dodge out of the way and return fire!
Water resists Ice and Water, so hitting it with Psybeam or Vacuum Wave would probably be better to use.
>>
>>31922546
Shoot it in the mouth and then dodge. Or jump sideways and shoot it in the side of the head.
>>
>>31922657
That applies to dice bonus, however, not the damage we do. The icicles will do a lot of damage regardless of its resistance when they hit.

>>
>>31922546

>>
>>31922546
>[] Dodge out of the way and return fire!
We -really- don't want to get hit with that. Snarl at it and use Detect at the same time to debuff while we dodge and pepper it with shots.
>>
>>31922546
>[] Stand ground and shoot first!
If we can muster enough force from vacuum wave, can we hit it with an uppercut, snap its jaw closed?
>>
>>31922743
>>31922546
>[] Stand ground and shoot first!
How large is it in comparison to us?

We may not even need to fill up its mouth with ice. Simply hit its throat and the attack could be interrupted.
>>
>>31922546
>[] Dodge out of the way and return fire!
>Use Vacuum Wave and aim for its mouth to prevent it firing.

Haha, hell no are we standing in front of that Plessy's water gun. It'd cut us in half.
>>
>>31922780
>Simply hit its throat
from the inside, I mean. It's looking down on us, so we should have a clear shot.
>>
>>31922657

>>
>>31922546
>[] Stand ground and shoot first!

Try and interrupt another attack!
>>
>>31922818
It might be pulling a Gyrados.
>part water part bullshit
>>
>>31922818
Monhun has a dragon element and Plessy doesn't have it. It's pure water, maybe with flying type added for this because of the wings.
>>
>>31922881
So, likely Water/Flying. In which case, it doesn't have a resistance against Ice. Cool.
>>
>>31922780
If it's like in canon, probably around 40 feet long, standing about 25 feet high. Fast swimmer, fast runner, with a lethal water blast. I don't think it can actually fly, but it can use its wings for like... gliding? Fins induce sleep, I think.

Watch out for dem hips

>>31922818
Probably just Water. It was basically agreed that most of the monhun monsters are dragonish because they're wyverns, but that they can't all be Dragon type because it would mess things up.
>>
>>31922546
>[x] Dodge out of the way and return fire!
>>
>>31922902
Flying weaknesses/resistences only apply when the monster is actually flying. It's one of the weird types that don't count as an actual type in this quest.

And once they do start flying, we lose the Aura bonus...
>>
Tabletopfag here, two sessions in and my players are elite as fuck, live capturing shit left and right. One of them wondered though, and got me to wondering, what benefit is there, if any, to only having one graft? Would 'monotype' rangers gain some form of advantage that otherwise multiple grafted people do not get?
>>
>>31922949
>Monotype
Beyond less risk of dying on the table? I can't think of one personally.
>>
>>31922934
I assume that the reason its weak against ice is because it makes it more difficult for it to fly. So it wouldn't really matter whether or not it was flying.

The effectiveness against flying, for example, is because of the aerial advantage. On the ground? The aerial advantage is gone. Against bug, its effectiveness is more a natural part of their dichotomy in the wild; flying creatures often prey on insects.

So yeah. Just logical reasoning.
>>
>>31922949
More controlled evolutions.

Grafts that are present at the time of evolution can influence each other.
>>
>>31922995
I've been considering swapping out "flying" type for an actual "Air/Wind" type.
>>
>>31923015
Now I want to know.
>Ranger has Magikarp grafts and Mankey grafts
>Evolve around the same time
>????
>>
>>31923046
>Rage incarnate.
>>
>>31923042
Sure, but what would that mean?
>>
>>31923042
Would that mean all flying types become Air/Wind type?
And if so, do they have all flying weaknesses when on the ground?
And would our final evo conflict with our typing due to that?
How would you explain dat meta? Probably Pokescience

I hope you don't mind me poking your brain a bit for fun now.
>>
>>31922949
I've always thought that tons of grafts could make things go screwy with evolving. Every implant is another week of being out of commission when it actually gets around to evolving, and then they can have weird interactions with the other implants. Like, you may never get your fire shooting part to be the ultimate fire cannon it could have been because it started interacting with the nearby something or other so now it's not as powerful as it could have been. But then on the other hand, sometimes they'll evolve to help eachother like the Crytten+Remoraid made the freezer nubs for icicle gun.

>>31923015

>>
>>31923234
Oh shit. I never realized.

>>31923137
Is it possible to fire our an Icicle Gun while using Vacuum Wave?
>>
>>31923234
I think that Ice Pulse would really be Icy Wind+Vacuum wave, since VWave uses aura to punch with the air. So IW+VW would be punching with air that's really, really fucking cold.

>>31923137
Can we do that, Prof? Combo Icy Wind+Vacuum wave to make Ice Wave supah cold distance punch? You did say Ceru so ELITE that she don't need to do rolls to make new combo attacks.
>>
>>31923259
You haven't tried it yet... That's a strange idea.

>>31923268
>Ice Pulse would really be Icy Wind+Vacuum wave
That sounds about right actually. Though mind that your vacuum wave isn't exactly strong right now.
>>
Wait I just realized. The guy said he wanted it alive, right?
So we should be careful not trying to inflict max damage. Just to passive it, right?
>>
>>31923293
Yeah, don't worry about it. It's not like it'd die easily from something like this.
>>
>>31923290
Would it at least be strong enough to help hammer the cold from Icy Wind a bit deeper into the flesh of the Plessy?
>>
>>31923290

>Water gun(4): (Type: Water) Costs 1 out of 60 water capacity. Launch a blast of water to your foes.

>Frost Breath(3+1): (Type: Ice) [10 Stamina] Armor penetrating freezing Close quarters breath attack.

>Ice Ball(0.5+1): (Type: Ice) Variable [3 for small - 9 for large] Launch balls of ice for quick, or charged concussive strikes.

>Vacuum Wave

>Icy Wave the one we just made
Those are all +1 Priority. Aqua Jet is also +1 if we ever unlock it.

>Detect
Is some stupidly high priority number. +4 or +6 or something. I always forget which and don't want to open the wiki.

>Extremespeed
If we ever unlock it, it's +2
>>
>>31923983
Well, Icicle Gun apparently isn't, but Ice Shard is. Quick Attack is also priority, as is Vacuum Wave and Frost Pulse. Check Bulbapedia for any of the others.
>>
>>31924026
It's called Frost Pulse in the modifiers Prof listed, not Icy Wave.
>>
>>31923978
Hey Prof, is it possible to use Detect to understand what the Smolodhans' intentions are for their next attack on the following turn?
>>
>>31924092
...that's actually a really good idea. If we can predict what teammates are going to do, we can work on combo moves with them.

Like, not just the Smolodhans, but Marine and Kurojo, or any other team members.
>>
>>31923594
>Hydo pump 10
Holy shit. This thing upped Water Gun to 10, then unlocked Hydro Pump and upped that to 10 also?

God Damn. That's 94 Skill Points.
>>
>>31924135
In a team with Aura users who are well-suited to working with each other, it'd cut away the time wasted in having to share a plan and just go straight to implementation.
>>
>>31924155
Uh, no, Water Gun Rank 10 is Hydro Pump.

>>31924163
Also a good way to lead the team. Just tell them to focus on you and just from your movements they'd know what tactic you'd want to use.
>>
The beast's fins shake violently and the Smolodhan hunting party splits down the center of the attack. Moving to flank along the sides. Red and Green running on three limbs at amazing speeds as Yellow rolls out of the way and adjusts his sight, looking for an appropriate shot.

Marine follows after Green, realizing quickly that she can't take that kind of spray. Yet you and Kurojo stand your ground, as the bird waits for the last second before the attack comes, only to twitch away and sprint toward the quarry.

You stand firm, and work out what may actually be the best course of action here... Vaccuum wave sends aura through the air, but what if you made it cold? Wouldn't that make It far more effective?
This is what you think as you chamber an arm back in Fuschia martial form. With a cleched fist you rapidly cool the air around your fist and throw it forward just as Plesioth barrels toward you, riding water secreted from its mouth as it oscillates back and forth like a frantic viper or a fish going in for the kill.

Your icy blast flies into its face, frosting over the water upon its eyes, and icing over its fluid dribbling. Finding its ride interrupted, it quickly turns a moment before hitting you, and catches you with its tail, sending you flying through the air!

From your unfortunate vantage point with the breath knocked out of you, you can see the ensuing battle unfold:

It's spin, has tangled it up further in the ropes that are still being reeled in, depriving it of its mobility.

Red comes in with his machine sword and swings it directly into the thing's jaw as it attempts to shoot off another beam, the blade slips through, even though extra parts are blown off as shrapnel trailing up the bow of the boat.

Thundering, sparking rounds are detonated into the side of the beast from yellow's gun, stopping a momentarily only to reload another shell as the thing writhes, and flails about, catching itself up further in the ropes.
>>
>>31924202
Getting Water Gun to rank 10 doesn't turn it into Hydro Pump, it just puts HP rank 0 on your sheet. You still have to buy the ranks in it.
>>
>>31924227
Uh, no. Getting Water Gun to rank 10 turns it into Hydro Pump.
>>
Marine and Kurojo move in to attack the legs, while green takes a daring leap overhead, spinning her monstrous sword into a vicious helicopter of metal death with aim for the monster's wings.

As she falls, it's a savage cut that severs not just the wing, but also sinks deep into the monster's flesh. Giving green an amazing handhold as she rides the beast's back. She undoes the lower part of her helm with a free hand, allowing her to open up her maw...

Yet your concern turns to the ocean as you fly off of the ship. You need to get back somehow... You hear a call, and a harpoon is thrown your way, just barely missing you as it skirts by with a rope.
It nearly makes your heart stop as you realize just how badly it could've impaled you...

With a grab of the rope, you feel it go taught as one of the Kahkori pull you back in to stop you from flying any further away.

As you hit the brine sea, you see things swimming around you, hurry out of the way. The ship's still moving fast and you're now trailing behind it from a rope coming off of the side.

>[] Reverse your water guns and blast forward back to the ship.
>[] Start pulling on the rope, no need to risk losing your lifeline.

If we did the water jet thing and failed, we'd be stuck without a rope in the middle of the ocean. Slower, but safer.
>>
>>31924283
You make a good point.

Plessie's hydropump is actually written as "Water Gun" now. Its watergun is renames Water Laser due to rank 10.

Just make it so that the rank 10 unlocks are variants. So it would be like

>Water Gun (Rank 10) Blah blah blah.(Based upon pressure bladder. Reduces water by 1.)
*Variant: May be used against a hard surface in combination with icy wind to generate a dense and cold mist.
*Variant: Icicle Gun: By using Ice-shards during the firing of Water Gun, Cerulean is capable of increasing the lethal damage done at reduced water cost in exchange for using up some stamina (See Ice Shards)
*Variant: Hydro Pump: Blast a massive column of water with extreme force.(Based upon pressure bladder. Reduces water by 10 or whatever it is..)

With the waves whipping against your face and the roll of the sea tossing you even gripping the damn thing is difficult. You hear the monster roar as you go under a greater wave, eating saltwater as your second eyelids quickly cover your eyes again.

You need to get back in on the action!

Recalling what the monster had done on deck, you decide that you might as well try yourself, but you'll need to let go of the rope.

That's the hard part.

You bounce over another wave and take a gulp of real air before another hits, giving you a full three seconds of water before your next breath of air.

Breathing water is alright, but you weren't born a fish, ya know?

With an explosion rocking the deck, you see the monster attempt to leap off of the side of the ship, a gaping, bleeding hole where its jaw used to be, a wing missing.

With the next wave you finally let go and angle your guns back, blasting back as hard as you can to catch up with the ship. In short time, you feel a sort of veil wrap around yourself as you quick and undulate against the waves, rapidly approaching the hunting boat and sinking your claws into the side of the ship, wrapping the rope around a hand, you stick your toe-claws in the side walk up despite the slick sheen coating the boat. The monster's blood drips down the boat, languidly, even as the beast is pulled back onto the center of the ship, prohibiting its exodus.

Once back up, you can Red's sword has converted back to an axe, and Green's prowling around outside the range of the monster, staring keenly at its legs that are ever more tangled in the hunting ropes.
>>
>>31924844
I don't think that would do anything, anon. Unless you want to read someone's intention SUPER HARD
>>
>>31924844
Oh, I forgot, but Prof never answered my question about that. Detect lets us sense life, so we'd presumably be able to detect life behind a barrier, right? We could possibly lock on to targets even if we didn't have visual contact with them.
>>
>>31924844
Extreme Accuracy.
>>
The thing pants and spasms even as a grinning Yellow loads more shells into his cannon, locking them in for the next volley.

Marine and Kurojo look to you coming back over the side of the boat with relif pouring off of their profiles. Kurojo's sword is bloody and dripping from a stroke through the monster, while Marine's left arm is a bit limp, while she's favoring her right.

The Smolodhan party look none the worse for wear. In fact, they seem to have everything in control.

But the captain, Dovahki, wants this thing alive.

> The monster is missing its lower jaw and right wing, bearing a sever burn and flesh that smells of grilled fish from where it had been. The heavy sword is still lodged in its back, with green effectively disarmed, yet continuing the fight with flames pouring from her maw, and claws gleaming a dangerous red.

>[] Next action?

>Kurojo is waiting and watching for a time to act.
>Marine's withdrawn from the frontline.
>Red is watching the monster carefully, his one eye favoring the creature's legs.
>Green is circling around to the front, ready to unleash fire and claw against the monster.
>Yellow is preparing to fire more shock rounds.

I just had a thought.

Sheer Cold instantly freezes the area it hits to absolute zero. It's inaccurate because of the delayed point in space targeting system.

What if we, once it's unlocked, combined Aura Sphere with Sheer Cold? Freeze the air in front of Ceru into a solid sphere (air does that at abs0) and infuse it with Aura and launch it?

I swear, it's only partially inspired by Kyle's powers from Psyren.

If you use Sheer Cold, and it's not a direct hit, it will just make huge chunks of solidified air.

We could create a tiny ball of condensed, super cold air and ice shards in our hand, and then ram it into a melee target, using it to slice them apart with the ice shards.

Of course it's not going to fucking work. It was a joke.
>>
You steady your guns and alternate them to fire psionic energy, a glittering power distorting the air and nailing the blind monster in the head, intensifying its mortal confusion.

Witnessing an opportunity, Kurojo slides in as Yellow unleashes his volley of sparking rounds into the beast's hide, further electrocuting the beast.
Kurojo's steel-bladed sword slices both of the monster's heels, forcing it down as he slides out of the way, the glittering blade disappearing into the pitch black sheath in a less than smooth movement as he hops a few steps away from the immobilized monster.

Green watches and begins to move until Red puts away his weapon, letting her know that it is indeed over.

The monster writhes in mental and physical agony as you feel its frantic spirit in the throes of its own version of despair. As though it sought help from something, anything.

With that, the sailors descend, attaching hooks to its hide and wing, wrapping it up firmly and ensuring that it's sufficiently restrained for travel. With that, the captain steps forward and removes one of the harpoons from the beast's hide, only to drive it deep into the other haunch.
She looks to green, who's now quieted down from her battle-frenzy, “Oi, stop the damn bleeding. You blighters went and wreckt it a bit too good!”

She points at one of the ferrine crew, “Mi-mow, get some burnberries, this thing is gonna sting fer a bit.”

The cat salutes and quickly disappears into the lower decks.

Dovahki shifts her stance, a hand upon her feathery hip as she looks over your party. “Three a' you did a good job staying out of the burners' way. Good job at what you did do though. Hard t' match up 'gainst professionals af'r all.”

You feel a smudge on your elitism. You're a trained rocket. Inexperienced natives just blew you out of the water, almost literally.
Yellow gives the three of you a smug look, while Red seems to be speaking with Green about her weapon as she cuts it loose.
>>
>>31925787
No, I'm talking about how the cold air and the icicles would interact on contact. It's not going to "shred" into anything.
>>
Flames soon pouring from her jaws to cauterize the monster's severe wound.

They really did cut it up something fierce though... It's a wonder. If they were serious, you're not sure that you could beat them in a straight fight...

But you'd need to. You'd need to win.

Kurojo seems to be a bit miffed at the whole thing, seeming to believe that his cut did indeed seal the deal, and of course, you opened fire first...

Marine looks a bit lost in the conversation, and neither you nor Kurojo bother filling her in yet. Now's not really the time.

“Can we offer it as some o' our pay fer th' ride? T'is a fair haul I reck.” You say, in a thick accent and with some deliberate words as you're still grasping the speak of the language.

“Nay. T'is part o' yer passage. Pay comes later, l'est ye prefer t' swim.” The captain chides, as she tosses the spear over to the portside of the ship, caught by a ready sailor. “I'm return'n t' m' quarters. Fair work on a fair day though, I must say.”

The hunt is done and the haul is defeated upon the ship. The Smolodhans linger to look over the beast, examining their work. Red, is speaking in Smolodhan to the other two, seeming to instruct them and review this hunt... You could listen in, but you probably won't get much from it besides the angry stare of Yellow.

Ah yes. I was actually planning on raising this up near the end of the thread. Prof, how would something like a Ninetail's brain implant for pyrokinesis interact with the -5ranks that the freezer array gives?

It doesn't really make sense for it to apply to fire created by pseudo-esper power outside of the body.

I know it doesn't really apply to Ceru at all, but it's something that's been on my mind for a while ever since you said that a Fire/Ice ranger would probably have to be asymmetric with their implants. Would something like Vulpix+Crytten be a way to make a fire/ice ranger that doesn't have the fire/ice parts relegated to separate halves of their body?

Also, studying the monster is stupid. We aren't a scientist, we won't be able to leverage any of our knowledge. Taking pictures is worse, because even if we crop out the burns, sword wounds, ropes, harpoons, and the boat, they're still going to ask us how it reacts and what we did to kill it.

>>
>>31925840
I can see that, but you guys decided to stand your ground instead dodging out of the way.
That got Ceru ejected and it really could've been worse.
Like, if she were fighting in just a group with Kurojo and Marine that could result in a knockout.

>>31925901
Yeah. Monster hunter is a ritualistic dodge fest. Unless you're a lancer. Then your block everything all day.

I think I'm having an issue with running AoPH and Overhuman more than once a week with another quest between. That-and I'm running a little low on go-juice.

Been trying to finish Snowcrash recently, and got into HAWKEN... Neither is helping that.
>>
>>31925913
I think the concept was to study it see if there were any bits that we might want to bring back home. This of course relies on the relevant organs being stuff the captain doesn't want, and also on the monster being a non-evolving monster, but since we're close to the dome and have the capacity to freeze organs, it could potentially be doable. Makes us come back looking like heroes, but we have to decide if trying is even worthwhile.

>Like, if she were fighting in just a group with Kurojo and Marine that could result in a knockout.
As I see it, that was done to interrupt the attack. That you chose to include a tail swipe was of your own volition. The roll was a success, so the attack interruption should have worked. If you had wanted to include that consequence, you should have just done it in the scenario where we had lost the roll instead.

Really, Prof, what makes this worse is that we were in a similar situation to this before in the Hypno fight, except it was us who got disabled instead. Our attack then, however, was meaningless. Unlike in this fight where the enemy creature's attack had such a large effect.

I've told this to you before, but you have a habit of favoring your own NPCs in your writing. Not only with your GM PCs like the Smolodhans, but with all our enemies. It's a habit that you've never really fixed since Akuma Quest.

Okay, strategy for doing this: Ask the captain if there are any useless parts we can take back as a trophy, to show off to our friends who have never seen a creature like this one before. First off, the tail attack wasn't even one of the moves the monster was preparing to use. You wanted to add it as a consequence to standing our ground? Like I said, it would have been better if you had relegated that to having been the case if our roll was a failure.

Learning a new attack is cool and all, but that doesn't really stop how boring the fight was.
>>

>>31926121
Also. We didn't dodge because we chose to prevent its attack. Which we manage to do. Then you nullified that.

I brought this up before, but you're constantly planning around our own attacks. The LEAST you could have done was have as roll to dodge the tail attack instead of deciding to make it automatically succeed.
>>
>>31925804
Ceru! Calm down. Is this any way for an elite, no, a professional to act?
They're like peacocks, when they stick out their tailfeathers they want to preen and expect to be praised, fueling their pride and ego.

Want to get back at them? Next time outdo them, and dismiss them. Don't gloat, don't try to show off and
much less rub it in their faces. Play it off as business as usual. Sure, they might think you're too much of a brute or too naive to appreciate how well of a job they did, but the point is you've got them where it hurts the most: their ego. If you respond to their gloating, you'll lose, and by denying them the attention they seek, you win. Become the frost, become the Cold itself.
>>
>>31926100

Yes, let's further indebt ourselves to a generous captain for a miscellaneous piece of slowly rotting, unclassified monster body that we can stare at and go "boy, that sure is a piece of dead tissue we took from a monster".

Do you realise how stupid this sounds? We aren't a scientist, a capture specialist, or even diligently trying to research things.
>>
>>31926155
We did prevent its attack, but we ate a far less lethal one to do it. Had we critsucceeded, it would have probably had us dodge the tail.
>>
>>31926179
And I mentioned earlier that the attack wasn't even included earlier.
>>
>>31926088
>>31926155
I can agree with the 'rolling to dodge' here. I don't mean anything by this, but he's right on your 'habit' to favor your own NPCs. Our own successes, for example, have always been rather marginal. And when we fail, we never have any of our own minor successes.
>>
>>31926179
>>31926198
Have us roll to dodge the tail, then. On a crit? Forego the roll at all. Really, our own 'success' against the monster never really featured in the rest of the battle, aside from stopping its first move. It didn't even get a mention on how being blinded affected the battle. No, we're just left with Prof's words that it allowed the Smorodhans to "clean house".
>>
>>31926226

>>31926267

It more a general attitude in quests from my experiences. most/some players cannot handle not being the center of attention.

I don't like being upstaged either, but sometimes NPCs can just handle shit on their own.
>>
>>31926295
I didn't bring it up, anon. But as it was brought up, I decided to share my two cents on the matter.

>>31926308
My own personal problem on the matter was more related to the tail attack having come up at all.
>>
>>31926269

If he has enough flaws that his ineptness somehow managed to come up every single thread, and apparently has been constant since his first quest, you should probably stop trying to "fix" him and leave the thread unmolested so people who actually enjoy thequest can talk.
>>
>>31926308
>>31926314
To explain my feelings on the matter, we only really need to look back at our past skirmishes. Our enemies often have partial victories when they lose a roll, but when we lose it, it's all or nothing. I'm sure you can at least agree with that, so let's forget the idea of having been 'upstaged' by the Smolodhans.

There has always been a rather... lop-sided dichotomy behind Prof's treatment of ours and the enemies' actions in his quests. I know he wants to make the world more gritty, but this really isn't the proper way to go about it.
>>
You take Marine to the side on the ship's deck, and see to her left arm. Aside from the residual burns lingering between her shell-plates.

Marine gives you a happy, yet pained smile, as she tenderly touches her shoulder, the flesh a bit distorted and a fracture running through he shell-pauldron.

“Took a hit when the thing started thrashing. It didn't like eating that red-guy's exploding sword... I need help getting it back in the socket.” She makes it sound like she's experienced this sort of thing before.

“Not the first time? You place your hands on her shoulder to assess the damage, running your aura through a little bit to get an idea of what you need to do.

“Got hit too hard a few times in Pewter training. Leader Brock had to do this to me once before. How I know it isn't broken. That thing hits like a truck...”
You put both hands an Marine's arm and shoulder and give her a nod. The two of you press together until you hear an audible click and pop from her anatomy and a stifled scream of pain from her as she quickly reigns in her agony.

“Whew. Not getting used to that.” She rolls a shoulder, before putting her arms around you, the left much lower than the right. “Thanks Ceru.”

You give your friend a cold little hug,”No problem Marine.”

“Think we'll be able to go home soon?”

The question twist you on the inside just a little bit, flutterbies flitting in your stomach. Home. Is it even really in reach right now? You don't even know where you are.

“Yeah.” You tell a white lie. Sometimes it's better than the truth, isn't it?
>>
Kurojo walks up across the wet puddles of blood and saltwater on the deck, some of the ferrine sailors getting to work cleaning the mess up. “Ceru, Marine. You feer that we shourd get credit, right?” He seems pretty flustered about the whole thing with that capture, his crest low and suitably angry.
“You gave it the first blow, and I gave the last. Smorodhan did a rot, but they hurt it bad...” He crosses his arms, chittering on the side with his own Kahkori curses, a sideways glare at the Smolodhans.

Yellow can't help but chuckle as Red berates green for losing her weapon. Green takes the chastisement with only confirmations that she's heard it and understands.
You get the feeling that Yellow's next, then again, he didn't really mess up, did he?

Wonder what that veteran would say to you?

Kurojo catches your eyes,”Sheru? Hey.” He waves his hand in front of your face, “Why do you stare at them?”

“Just thinking.” You begin to walk away for your quarters below deck. “Come on, I'm kinda tired. Lets go eat and sleep some more.”

“I second Ceru's genius motion.” Marine giggles.

Kurojo stands on the deck for a moment, takes another angry look to the smolodhans, and follows after. Seems he doesn't much like them...

Anon, you're too defensive of Prof now.

I haven't insulted him, nor have I really been accusatory. You do KNOW what my posts are, right?

He has made promises before to 'fix' himself. If he hasn't, then it's only natural to point it out to him. And obviously, a number of people feel the same, if we look back to the Q&A thread Prof had set up a few days ago. So, if anything else, it's better that he receives criticism from someone who tries to word it as politely as possible than for the problem to show up again worse and agitate those very same people.

Yes, that level of sarcasm and misinterpretation sure does sound stupid. The purpose was /telling/ the captain we were after something useless as a simple trophy so she wouldn't try to add it onto our debt. We would actually be after an actual useful, implantable organ. I'm not even suggesting theft here, simply that things we consider useful might not be considered useful by the captain. Likely? No. Potentially worthwhile, considering the cost is just asking and maybe looking a bit silly or presumptuous? Quite possibly.

closer and closer to becoming...

We need to figure out how to move air through our water pumps.

Jet seal cat is go.
>>
Two days later...

The Monster hasn't moved much since thrashing through the night and intermittently throughout the day after. Occasional splashes of ocean water are applied to its gills, and its eyes are bound with a black cloth to keep it from seeing anything, that's really calmed it down.

As you come up the deck to greet a new day, you see a large landmass consuming most of the horizon...

Green fertile forests consume the outer rim, a similar jungle to the Kahkori's home-trees with the noteworthy exception of the trees being overly large, likely that they're newer at the least. The waters up close take on a festive green tint with the life that teems within the waves and around the shallows.

The ship pulls around, the landmass, dropping sail to pull it from the current, the wind leading the boat slowly into a massive harbor ranging from well-made and expertly built piers in which some of the larger ships dock, a more practical set that's currently off-loading a captured monster from a place far away. It's so wrapped up you can barely even make out what it is.

The ships of this harbor seem to be made of monster parts, much like the one you're on now. In fact, all the ships seem to have some presence of monster anatomy, though far less apparent than the ones made for hunting.

There's another harbor much less practical and much more hastily made with a single robed worker fixing up the scrappy ivory port. You can barely makeout the green and blue scales of the thing's hands as it carefully moves another bone into place.

One of the sailors makes a snide comment about the shanty port. “Don't venture o'er thar l'est ye catch their scales!” They share a laugh, yet offer nothing more about the port.
>>
It's a small port, and it's just handling the repair. That's actually kind of sad.

From the port, you see buildings upon buildings into a full market with monster bones hunger up for decoration as often as it's done as the literal skeleton of a building. There's a certain hustle and bustle to this city that reminds you of Pallet Center.

Kahkori, Ferrine, and Smolodhan move about along the harbor, and through the seen streets, while it seems that the only one of that fourth race is the robed figure creating a harbor of not wood,
but bones.

I thought so too, but upon checking, it seems unlikely. Although Prof failed to make any mention of the presence of scales, he described the Dagoon we fell as being muscular and slimy, which leads to the idea that they have a rather more amphibious appearance.
>>
>>31926790
>so what say ye, prof, regarding how our successes let the opponent counter with a completely different move, yet the same cannot be said vice-versa?
Probably has something to do with the enemy in this case being a huge dragonfish monster thing and Ceru being one member of a huge group that decided to stand her ground.
>>
>>31926801
I don't think we're a quick jaunt.

I REALLY REALLY hope though.
>>
>>31926822
I already addressed that earlier. We prevented its first attack. The tail was not mentioned or a part of it.

If Prof wanted to include it, he should have allowed us to roll for it or add it as part of a failure instead of a success.
>>
>>31926715
Anyone else really want to go investigate the plot hook Proff laid down at the tiny harbour?
>>

>>
>>31926838
I really don't think that's worth complaining about. We made the STUPID choice. We succeeded in our roll, which made the consequence fixable, but there was still a consequence for doing something so dumb.
>>
>>31926822
I talked about that too, you know. The problem with people busy defending Prof is that they often don't bother to actually understand the complaint brought up against him.

It's their main island.

>>31926790
>so what say ye, prof, regarding how our successes let the opponent counter with a completely different move, yet the same cannot be said vice-versa?

Aqua jet was cancelled into a tail swipe. I actually regarded it as the same attack, but forcibly changed due to Ceru's interference.

An object in motion stays in motion.

>>31926822
That too. Everybody else got out of the way of an imminent attack.. Ceru was the only one that decided she was Main Tanking the monster.

Also the winning roll was won by a difference of 2 after corrections and the resulting lack blindness put its modifiers pretty damn

>>31926858
Really helpful.
>>
>>31926873
I really don't get why the stand option won when we're a gunner.
I mean, you'd think people wanted to try and grab it or something.

that is debatable. Risky, yes. Stupid? Make your case.

>>31926911
>An object in motion stays in motion.
last I recall, the body movements for aqua jet are a lot different from tail swipe. Plesiote ARE known to do the cancelling thing, though, but not when they're interrupted. I guess Frost Pulse didn't do enough to count as a stagger?

>Ceru was the only one that decided she was Main Tanking the monster.
that brings up a good point. Things would be a lot clearer cut if everybody went for an interrupt.

>>
>>31926900
It's a common DM tactic to have gradiating levels of consequence for player-choice errors, modified by chance. As he mentioned earlier, had we failed the contested roll against the boss monster's main attack, we would have gotten knocked out. We succeeded, and thus only had to deal with a penalty event. RNG failures should always have room to recover from, but it's perfectly reasonable (and common) for DMs to have harsh consequences for overwhelming dumb player choices.

>I roll initiative against the King!
>>
>>31926964
I voted for that last thread, but it doesn't seem very popular.
>>
>>31926952
The thing is anon, we were the ONLY one who went to do that. Pretty much anyway. That means
>One ranger vs Giant Fishthing
It isn't exactly easy to try and stun something like that, the way we were trying to do.

I mean, maybe if we had Water pulse. But ya know.
>>
>>31926993
The problem here, however, is that it's not a level choice.
>>
>>31926998
It wasn't a votable option last thread.
but I am with you.
>>
>>31926952
I have no idea.

I was going to have the thing open with hydropump until I saw that Ceru was going to stand there.
That would've hurt. That would've hurt a lot. Especially of it got frozen into an ice spear. mid-flight...

Like Frost Pulse could've done.
>>
>>31927005
Can you clarify what you mean by 'level choice'?
>>
>>31927027
I think he means that he wants all courses of action to be equally viable or something.
>>
>>31927021
That sounds like Critfail material. Damn son.

So is it safe to say that as the gunner, we should..oh I dunno...get to mid/long range if we can before opening combat?

Because that seems wise to me.
>>
>>31927021
I didn't even vote for Frost Pulse. I only wanted to do an Icicle Gun, which you didn't even include in the post.

However, that's an irrelevant consequence, Prof. That would have been something for a crit failure. The main issue that I want you to address was your uneven treatment for our failures and the failures an enemy has.
>>
Ice types have shit defense in general

we shouldn't take anything ever if we can help it
>>
>>31927021
Ah, so you really didn't believe we had a chance in hell of interrupting.
>>
>>31927061
Enemies make less dumb decisions then we do, for one.
>>
>>31927044
Er, somewhat.

>>31927027
The option to move out of the way gave us the immediate benefit of dodging its attack.

The option to attack it before it launched its attack was to prevent it from attacking at all.

Yet Prof just said that we could have moved out of the way and done the same thing. That goes against common reason. A 'quick draw' move has certain connotations attached to it, after all. Benefits that one expect of it.
>>
>>31927021
Heh. You should know better then to put options like that to vote for, then if you think they're crazy.

Provide two (at least) viable options, with a write in as a third. Then you don't need to worry about this stuff.

Just a suggestion for me. tg has a tendency to gravitate towards the bad options.
>>
>>31927021
Did you decide how you're going to handle the Rank 10 upgrades? I like the idea of just making them into *Variants myself.
>>
>>31927061
>for a crit failure
>>31927058
>That sounds like Critfail material. Damn son.

How about we think of group combat rolls as overall squad effectiveness.

Attacks' damage is counted on a separate track.

Plessie's "Water laser" Could cut right through flesh. Hell it might cut the damn ludroth-proofed boat if it's frozen.

Icicle gun is currently your most damaging close-mid-long-ranged attack. If you want to inflict damage it's wise to go for that.
Water gun is still mostly impact.

I'll list this shit in my pastebin if I have to to clear that up. I threw Aqua Jet in there to keep Cerulean from being impaled Crit or no.
>>
>>31927021
>I was going to have the thing open with hydropump until I saw that Ceru was going to stand there.
Wait....that doesn't make sense. Right after you said that Ceru and the Smolodhans had priority.
>>
>>31927021

You've responded for issues less important than this.

Variants seems like a swell idea.

>>
>>31927117
We're getting off-track here, Prof.

Prof, again let me ask, what do you think are the possible benefits to attacking first before moving away?
>>

>I'll list this shit in my pastebin if I have to to clear that up.
I haven't really been following the conversation all that closely, but I do love me some more detail in them there pastebins!
>>
>>31926955
The only move we'd seen the creature make was Hydro Pump, with in-text description of the horrific level of power involved. It used it instinctively as a reaction to being harpooned, which says that it wasn't a once-off. It was firing at us when we were all clustered together, so if the fish had even the teensiest bit of tactical logic, it would have tried a big attack that had a chance of hitting us all. We cannot stand up against a boss monster's attack with our pitiful attacks. Moreover, people were encouraging ineffective typed moves. If you go back and notice, there was a big discussion about grafts around the time of the choice that distracted from the actual voting, so the option to stand firm wasn't really an option that was discussed and thought about by large numbers of people (and even then was closely voted).

>>31927091
That is a good cricticism. Giving two options tends to make tg consider the options on equal grounds, making people vote on them in comparison to each other, rather than on contextual grounds. More options = more discussion and player involvement in the decision.
>>
>>31927117
That's not even what I was talking about.

The decision was made to try and stop the monster's attack. Can you keep that in mind before moving on?

We managed to prevent the monster's attack. That's what we were aiming for.

Yet somehow the monster got an attack off anyway. What are your reasons for thinking that's fair? Compared to all the other times where we failed by a small margin? Do you remember how you treated those exchanges? The ones where we lost by a little?

Well, really, we get a few moves a turn (combo)
I don't see why enemies can't
>>
>>31927191
We had good reason to believe we'd succeed in interrupting its attack. By the descriptions Prof had given us, we knew it to be heavily damaged, which would mean heavy penalties. We also had a 6 man team with us to fight against it. So in terms of dice, we had reasonable cause to believe we'd be able to succeed.

>>
>>31927307
Actually, it's more like bitching about poorly made decisions. Again.

Why does this shit happen every 5-10 threads?
I swear, you'd think people would learn that we're a gunner. If anything we should've spent our turn climbing the Crow's nest, and spent all the rest of the rounds blasting fishmando to death.
>>
>>31927272
Prof. Firstly, let's start with this. Do you actually think there's an argument? Or did you start this off from the beginning with the idea that you're completely in the right?
>>
>>31927272
With how long it takes you to reply, sometimes I think you're just trying to come up with some sort of witty reply to seem smart... like right now.
>>
>>31927403

>>
>>31927194
>We managed to prevent the monster's attack. That's what we were aiming for.
>
>Yet somehow the monster got an attack off anyway.
It stopped short and turned around to face your allies that had just flanked it. You happened to be way too close to its tail when it happened since you stood in the path of the attack.

It's a big monster, it's got weight to throw around.
You are a child. A trained child with superhuman abilities, but a child. This applies for many other monsters.

And I've already noted the difference between overall effectiveness and the actual damage done.

If you tried to freeze a water laser it would've impaled you at just about any roll, even an alleged success. While a success might have frozen it up into its maw and prevented any further water lasers for a time, while a complete failure would've been more one-sided.

Like I said, difference between effectiveness and damage. You could also count that as a hidden "Strategy" modifier.

Bad choice was made overall though.

I was flabbergasted that it was chosen.
>>
>>31927432
You. You're right.
>>
>>31927438
then you need to ask WHY we chose the option.

I wasn't there for the vote, but I figured the idea was to slam the mouth shut while its trying to fire the laser.
>>
If you keep treating the players like they have an even minuscule modicum of common sense, foresight, or memory you'll just end up disappointed and the players will be upset.

all too common QM fault.
>>
>>31927356
Let's put it this way: DM's have the ability to decide in advance 'this decision is the wrong one. If they pick it, there will be negative consequences/a lack of positive consequences'. So long as they remain consistent (either logically consistent to the circumstances) or have foreshadowed the consequence) and don't do it after-the-fact in order to railroad players, this is a reasonable way to run a game, as it requires the players to find the option that is logically or story-wise correct for the situation (though trouble does come up when these conflict). As a player, this is an opinion that I hold. Do you agree? Does everyone here agree with this concept?

>>31927403
He takes ages to post all the time. It is completely, let's not kid about the fact you're just trying to score verbal points.
>>
>>31927438
I've only been lurking till now but shouldn't we have had the chance to roll to dodge the tail at least?
>>
>>31927438
Isn't the point of a priority move that it actually comes up first? That we were apparently even faster means we should have gotten it off before it even released its attack, regardless of whether or not we failed the roll.

I did not even want to use Frost Pulse, but with the way you were pushing for it, it seemed that it was the strategy that you thought aligned with our idea to stop it from attacking.

I don't think putting in bad choices as part of the prompt will do us any favors. I mean, if it's a write it, ya know, nothing to be done. But that you wrote it down made it seem a little less crazy.

Not less crazy enough for me to pick it, mind you. But there you go.

My advice, follow this anon >>31927091 but other than that, I have no real problem with how things went down. Makes sense that big monsters get free attacks with body parts when we're that close.
>>

I believe when Prof said he was flabbergasted by the choice, he was referring to taking the boss' attack on directly, not so much the specific choice of move.

Presumably he meant we would have lost a full round of attacking in exchange for not getting hit by any attacks? Which makes sense as the smarter move in a fight where it is multiple fighters against a single, very powerful foe. Trading blows 1:1 with a tougher foe is how you lose. It was only the first round when we were clustered that everybody had to dodge.

Anyway, I CAN actually imagine us gaining tenacity for not backing down and managing to tank the primary attack.

Yeah. If we used Water Gun instead of some of our stam-chewing moves, we wouldn't run out nearly as fast.

>Detect + Water Gun for Matrix-style dodgin' & shootin' action.
Who cares about blowing all your Stam on Detect when you can just punch holes in everything with Water Gun?
Getting a Mystic Water would be boss. Infinite water in one gun is super powerful, even if it evaporates into nothing within minutes of being shot.
>>
>>31928119
Couldn't even be considered a different option since we could apparently do the same thing if we had done it.

Speaking of which. We need to not forget we have our Macho Brace when we get home.

Training with that shall be intense.
>>
>>31927988
That's a little...wishy-washy.

Standing ground because you won't have to dodge makes sense.

Standing ground and then dodging...does not. If you wanted to do what Kurojo did, that was not standing ground.

>>31928132
You seem to not be taking recoil and cooldowns into account.
>>
>>31928154
only if you're black I will
>>
>>31928160
I think its because he's an idiot
>>
>>31928159
I want to do the Gunner skill training. We've specced into a gunning skillset pretty heavily, yet we never even bought the first level of the actual Gunner skill.

+rank on every single shooty move? Yes please.
>>
>>31928194
Wait wait, there's a gunner skill?

Shit, why haven't we done...any of that?

Wow I feel stupid now.
>>
>>31928160
That... does not follow. We stood our ground as it was about to attack. That does not mean we stay there indefinitely.
>>
>>31928215
There wasn't any before. It was something recently brought up by an anon that I think Prof said we could train in.
>>
>>31928221
like I said

he's an idiot
>>
>>31928160
not that anon but

I feel like we succeeded in the opening round in interrupting the monsters main attack. The monster attacked we caused it to flinch which should have launched us into the second round of combat. Where the monster decides to focus on the group of combatants instead of 1 person and in switching targets we get a new set of options and a forced dodge roll. My only problem with what happened is that I just disagree about how the round included the tail swipe
>>
>>31928237
Ah. Well shit, we should've asked earlier.

Don't forget that idea, anon. that's a good one. Worthy of dedicating to, since that's sorta our thing now.
I also want to do a little CQC on the side, since that's our backup. We are an ice tiger and all.
>>
>>31928215
Because I asked Prof if we could do it during the ship rescue mission and he said "oh, yeah. You guys could have totally done that if you'd asked earlier. You'll have the option next time you want to train." Then we got washed out to sea and the only training we've had since then was for Aura.

But yeah. For 2 Skill Points, we can get rank 2 Gunner. That would give us +2 on Water Gun, Icicle Gun (added separately from the averaging thing, so it's worth even more here than ranks in IS or WG), Psybeam, and Ice Ball.
>>
>>31928282
>all dose buffs

its got my vote
>>
>>31928221
did you think we stood still for 30 seconds after attacking? The tail swipe happened immediately after Frost Pulse, during Ceru's cooldown. Sure, you could dodge, but the DC for that would be so high it shouldn't matter.

>>31928249
1) we half-staggered it, because 1 Frost Pulse does NOT pack that much punch.
2) when the Plessy switched targets, it turned it's tail, which hit us. So it's not actually an attack done with intent. I'm a little conflicted about this part, because if what I'm saying is true, the tail swipe shouldn't have had enough force to push Ceru off deck, just hit the rail. On the other hand, if it was an attack done with intent, there would have been a split-second of charge-up that would allow a dodge roll.
>>
>>31928313
Not to say that Gunner isn't good, it's a very good skill. Getting it to rank 3 or 4 would be highly beneficial for us.

But I don't think it would actually help with the damage of the moves themselves. Like, we'd get the bonus to the rolls to see if the attack hit, but it wouldn't actually make the move more powerful.

Consider two different rangers
>One has rank 6 Water Gun
>Another has rank 4 WG + rank 2 Gunner
Both would get +6 to their rolls for Water Gun, but the Rank 6 water gun would hit harder on a success. So putting points into the moves themselves is still needed.
>>
>>31928362
Oh yeah, obviously. That's what keeps it from being OP, I'd imagine.
>>
>>31928397
Yeah. It also doesn't help with our new ranged aura moves, apparently. Those only get the benefit from our hand to hand training (I'm glad we got it to rank 3 before this all happened).
>>
>>31928330
I'd argue that we'd still have that split-second chance to dodge because big monsters don't just turn on dimes. Even at half stagger we won a roll that literally put us out of the entire fight. In the end prof made a few people mad and the fight overall fairly dull.

I think that prof messed with adding in the tail swipe into that first round. Instead we should have had a forced dodge roll because we didn't roll right off the bat.
>>
>>31928432
Which is why, even though we're not a fighting type, Aura is gonna be a big part of us, I think.

Probably will be one of the things we try to max out. Like Water Gun, Icy Wind, and (maybe) Aurora Beam (For Ice Beam).

At least, that's what I am picturing.
>>
>>31928448
>Forced dodge roll
With a much higher DC, maybe.
But the point is kinda moot at this point.
>>
>>31928459
I need to ask or check the archives, but iirc Psybeam has a ton of rank 10 variants and I think Ice Beam is one of them.

I just really don't like the thought of spreading even more points out into Aruora Beam if we don't need to. Getting it to Rank 10 is nearly 50 more Skill Points we'd need to get.
>>
>>31928448
Maybe if Prof added more details, this would be more understandable.

From how I understand it, the Frost Pulse interrupted the attack, but did not stagger. The Plesioth still had full control of the rest of its body, which was running towards us(I didn't know they could run while firing lasers). When it realized it could not fire, it tried to stop instead of running us through, and braked with a turn, which is what hit us.
>>
>>31928498
But Ice Beam anon!
Ice Beam!

>Psybeam becomes Ice Beam
Whut?
If so, then I am totally game with that. But that seems strange.
>>
>>31928529
>But Ice Beam anon!
>Ice Beam!
We have Icicle Gun and now Frost Pulse for the ranged single target Ice damage. I'm just not seeing the appeal of sinking that many points into Aurora Beam when we're already fairly progressed into alternative options.
Ice beam is really cool tho. If we'd had the option to buy it from the start instead of Ice Shards, I'd have gone for it
>>
>>31928481
sure, we stood our ground and made it flinch. this also put us into a position where we are super close and don't have a lot of time to dodge. a higher dc on the dodge makes sense. it's just that we should have been able to try to roll that dc.

>>31928517
that makes sense but we still won the roll. that should carry over into the entire combat round not just the attack. maybe we still got hit by the tail because the rolls were close but we shouldn't have been knocked out of the fight.
>>
>>31928581
I wonder if we need max rank Aurora beam to get Ice Beam.
I mean. Maybe we can get it if we beamify another ice move somehow.
>>
>>31928586
I have to agree with you there, the angle just doesn't result in flight. It would make more sense if we were slammed into the floor(ouch)
>>
>>31928586
by like 1 or 2

not going avoid taking some lumps with that minuscule difference
>>
>>31928631
I said I was okay with taking damage from the tail. I'm not okay with being knocked out of the fight.
>>
>>31928617
>I wonder if we need max rank Aurora beam to get Ice Beam.
We do. If we only needed like Rank 5 or something, I'd be all for it. But 10 is way to damn expensive.

>Maybe we can get it if we beamify another ice move somehow.
Maybe we can work with Goldie on comboing Psybeam with Ice somehow when we get back. Psybeam can turn into Psychic/Psyshock/Heal Pulse/ a ton of other things with proper training. Forcing it Ice type via combo shenanigans doesn't seem too far fetched.
>>
>>31928648
I don't advise that manner of speaking. It sounds like Prof MUST please you.
>>
I'll probably post this again next thread, but:

Plesioth
>Charge forward, use laser. Laser's recoil will stop charge

What happened:
>Frost Pulse stopped laser, but did not stagger.
>Plesioth has no means of stopping, and so brakes with a turn.
>Because it's moving forward while turning and it's fuckhuge, tail sweeps downwards at us.

Aftermath:
>Ceru is hit by diagonal-downward tail swipe
>Either Ceru is slammed into floorboards, or bounces off the floor and over the deck?
>>
>>31929727
>Aftermath:
>>Ceru is hit by diagonal-downward tail swipe
>>Either Ceru is slammed into floorboards, or bounces off the floor and over the deck?
Nah, she got flung up into the air and off of the ship. A sailor threw a harpoon after us for us to catch as it was happening.
>>
>>31929744
that's the weird part: Plesioths are TALL

At Ceru's height, a normal tail swipe would miss her entirely. The tail would have to go down first.

>She was hit by the fins
Still does not have upward momentum.

>She was hit as the tail was coming up
That would mean that Ceru is around 60 degrees to the side, and while Prof can retcon that that was the case, the power would be much weaker as it's coming up. This is probably what he'll go for though, since big muscle is big.
>>
>>31929866
>>31929727
I think you guys are thinking about this way too much.
>>
>>31929866
Size may vary in AoPH? We've seen 100 ft tall Tropius, maybe this was a little Plessy.
>>
>>31929908
I don't think you understand. One of the worst things about Plesioths is how rage-inducing their hitboxes are. Of course I care exactly where Ceru was in relation to the tail.

I'm at least hoping that Prof isn't going to joke that Plesioth's tail swipe extends well beyond the tail as a reference.

>>31929925
Pretty sure a major point in all the arguements so far is that the Plessy was huge.
>>
>>31929955
>rage inducing hitboxes

yeah, Using a Plesioth was just asking for rageposts.

When you completely surround a mosquito with CO2, it attempts to go in all directions, vibrating in place forever until it eventually dies or the CO2 dissipates.

That's what's happening to me right now.

Also have some life stuff on the side, so expect me to be kill for a while until that's done.
