Parasite. This is what you are, but how do you know that? What need does a parasite have for words and meaning. Consume, Grow , Spread, Repeat. A constant refrain that hums at the depth of each cell in your mass, but there is something else. As your mass flits about and sips at the sugar rich fluid swirling within your host’s nervous tissue you turn to more pressing matters. Namely that of the rich and bountiful flesh within your host that remains out of your control. The Brain. There first. The host knows we are here, but what more?

-----Game Unpause-----

>[X] Sip:Tease:Spread:Grow

You continue to grow and infect along the neural tract, leaving infectious sentries encysted along the way. Wary of tipping off the host’s immune system any further you direct the fungal mass to only take from the excess sugar secreted by the nervous tissue. This slows the growth of the mass but does not injure any tissue. A quick check of the fluid around the mass does not indicate any brackishness about.

You force your consciousness to hover near the singing neurons, taking in their song and listening for anything. For a while nothing comes, but then very brief flashes of something leak through. The host is afraid, you can tell that much. But of what? You can only draw so much without resorting to burning into the tissue, though maybe some further probing may reveal a gentler method. You consider the best course while relaxing to the frantic trill of the nerves.

There is no reason to tear into the host’s memories just yet, not when the spine is so close. Spine? What is that? Something in the depths of your mind tells you that it is a good place to be and leads to the brain. Yes, Brain. That is the goal. You press on, keeping your growth slow. Your rear sentries report decent infiltration and no issues despite slow growth. The mass approaches a constriction as it slides up the neural tract.

This constriction is capped off, but with a bit of membrane shifting you pierce it easily. A dry fluid oozes forth, you find it distasteful compared to the sugar rich fluid of the peripheral nerves. No matter, what is lost in nutrients you can taste in information. You can sense your goal, as well as what could be a growing apprehension in the host. Something different wafts about the atmosphere. What is your order?

You are tired of taking the cautious route. Confident in the size of your mass you tear into the surrounding neural tissue, regardless of the surging alarm chemical flaring around you. A pulling sensation yanks your consciousness down into an inky murk. A blinding light pierces your vision.

Wait, vision? You are looking out through a pair of eyes. The eyes of your host. You are not in control, this is a memory. The host is afraid…restricted. The host is tied to a table. It struggles as a large figure advances slowly. Eyes dart about and the heart thunders. A flash of metal. A piercing feeling in the leg. The vision faded.

You snap back into your world of tissue and hunger. How strange the host’s senses are. Your senses bristle as alarm chemicals rage and surge. Small cells, numerous and angry, detach from the inflamed spinal tissue and scream towards your mass. They tear into your mass, devouring cells left and right. What do you do?

The host is Male, Afraid, Restrained and aware it is Infected. That is all you know currently.

>[]: Rage:Fight:Consume:Surge

This is the host, it is your food. You care not for the defenses of the host. The immune cells tear into your mass, and you return in kind. Membranes tear into the cells, ripping lipid layers and spilling cytoplasm. Enzyme’s burn and swirl about as your fungal mass rips into everything it sees. You pulse back orders to your sentries, telling them to reawaken and to grow. Your mass flares and explodes with growth, quickly
The body responds in kind. Tissues inflame and become leaky.

The white beasts return, along side their smaller and more numerous bretheren and begin to attack your network of tissue, only to find their bite crippled by your new found immunity and sheer numbers. Some of your mass has tapped into a major artery and provide warnings of incoming threats. Suddenly the cells in the leg muscle report the tissue going limp. As if suddenly cut from invisible strings. The pressure of your bulk and tissue inflammation have disrupted the host’s control of his lower limbs. You slow your pressure, sealing entry points with a quick and dirty protein wall, and killing off any remaining attackers. The pressure around you begins to lessen and you allow your cells to probe the damaged neural tissue as you plot, feelings and images tease on the edge of your senses. You also have the immune system on the run, for now. If the host didn't know before, it knows it is under attack now.

You figure you’ve damaged the host enough. You defenses are holding and the tissue around you remains at a steady level of inflammation. Your thoughts turn towards the neural tissue that twitches and screams around you. Gone is the lovely trill as it has been replaced with chaotic and random screaming. You try to touch the tissue, gently shuffling surface proteins and ion gates until you find a combination that lets your mass actually touch the neurons without out killing them outright. It seems as good at time as ever to try and take a thought from the host without everything going to hell again. You focus your consciousness on matching the trill the nerves used to sing with.

Instantly you are smacked with a disorienting wave of agony. Your mass bristles and quakes as you pull back. You try again, this time trying to smooth out the screams of the host tissue with shouts of your own. Things go better. You work for a time to make this back and forth smoother until you find you can interact with any infected neuron just as easily as your own mass. You try an issue a command, anything really, just a force of will. Suddenly your cells in the leg report the muscle tighten up and twitch. You have gained control of some of the host’s right leg. To what degree and how effective it is you are unsure, but further domination of the host’s neural network will be greatly easier.

Mass Size: ~2.5M Cells.

You resist the temptation to engage in another infectious surge or any memory ripping. You let your mass continue to grow slowly into the surrounding tissue and progress further up the spine. Slow progress is avoiding tipping off the immune system, but is telling you nothing about the host. Several more attempts to move the leg result in the same straining of muscle.
As you focus more on the information singing along the recovering neural tissue something new comes to light. Motion, position speed. New concepts flare into your consciousness. You know more about your host’s leg, where it is and how its moving. Your attempts to move the leg are causing it to kick, but something external is holding it in place. Slow and Steady consumes the host, no? Your influence pushes deeper. The blood flow to the right leg is infiltrated at a number of stops, essentially checkpointing the entire leg. Your tendrils have consumed most of the upper muscle and have taken most of the knee. A few cursory pulses to the area result in more twitching and screaming. You pull back slightly. Should a parasite not remain undetected? The host knows but does nothing to stop you? How curious. Still caution is key and you refrain from exercising any more dominion over the host. No further screams rumble through your mass. A pity.

You press your tendrils deeper up the spine, spreading out into the tracts exiting to the left and right. In your caution you refrain from connecting or growing too deep into the virgin flesh. Alarm proteins still nip at your mass as the body offers up a token resistance. New information tingles at the periphery of your consciousness. With some effort you may be able to tap into the host again without causing as much alarm as last time, but it still is risky. It is taking most of your concentration to keep the mass in synch with the host’s nervous tissue. Regardless you mass continues to grow, but at a much reduced rate. The mass is growing restless only being allowed to feed on stray nutrients.

A brief update.
Your infectious mass has so far kept to the neural tissue of the host, only growing out into the leg muscle and femoral artery of the right leg. The growth there is much slower due to avoiding consuming host tissue and delaying an immune response. Sentry cells along the artery to prevent a majority of the immune system from acting in that area and neural tissue in the spine has poor blood flow.
>>
>>31920941
>>31921011
Right, so even though we've been growing we've been refraining from eating up the infrastructure for the most part.
>>
>>31921044
We can make it better. Stronger. Faster.
>>
If we could.

How effective would infecting the sewers be?
Could we spread to the water supply?
>>
>>31921011
Growing cautiously is okay for now but it sounds like we'll need to expand in the abdomen soon. All those delicious nutrients...

I'm glad we're leaving sentries behind or we would've had issues I think. Still, the lack of an immune system besides from jsut us is.... worrying to say the least. Necrotic tissue here we come!
>>
>>31921096
Fungi and water don't mix too well in general. Moisture is fine of course, being submerged not so much.
>>
>>31921115
Well there is a lot of organic waste down there we could consume. Unless we can't. Also, isn't sewer water recycled into drinking water?
>>
>>31921096
Currently your mass is at 5M cells. Effectively spread out in the host. For comparison there are 2.5 billion bacteria in a gram of dirt. There are many predators in the wild that would seize upon you in an instant, but you are highly adaptable. Take that as you will.
>>
>>31921169
Any infections apart from us need to be killed off. Competition for host etc.
>>
So we're going to become super cancer right?

Your lays an edict down upon the mass. Hunger is the concern of lesser beings, the mass has done well so far and will continue to infiltrate the host without seizing upon the succulent and fresh tissue. At least not yet. There is a different hunger within the mass. A craving to know the host, to slither inside its mind and take from it slowly. You could easily tear what you want from the creatures mind, but to what end? A slow inevitable advance, fear and panic. These are good. The deep voice in your consciousness rumbles. Take it chortles before dissipating again. What is that thought, you wonder? You sooner can feel the state of the host before you could find it again. No matter. You lock your growth for the time being and fully concentrate on tapping into the host.

Your consciousness brushes up against the host once again. You cannot fully rip from the host its senses however something comes through. You have no sight or touch, besides that of the leg. You feel vibrations, similar to the screaming of the host but different. Something else is vibrating. Meaning drifts through. The host is communicating, well screaming.

“THE FUCK DID YOU STICK IN ME! I CAN FEEL IT, SHIT IT’S IN MY LEG, OH GOD! FUCK YOU!”

“Subject 326, calm down or we will sedate you. You were given a mild nutritional supplement. There is nothing inside you. Note paranoia and hallucinations in the register”

“YOU LYING FUCKS, ITS IN MY HEAD, I CAN HEAR IT, IT CAN HEAR ME! KILL IT! KILL IT! KILL ME!”

“Aides, sedate the subject and convene the department heads. Its progressing.”

There is a brief moment of struggle as your host screams and thrashes, but the link quickly fades as the nerves quickly reduce their activity. The host is asleep for now. The same cannot be said for the mass. You can feel the hunger burning through the mass, it must feed, but from where?

>convene the department heads.
IT'S HAPPENING, YOU COULD HAVE STOPPED THIS
>>
So should the department heads being called together mean we should act fast? It is clear this entire situation was set up by them and they expected us to take over.
>>
>>31921688
I would say that escaping the body is crucial at this point. The factthat our cells are entering a "Crucible" is indicitave that we are possibly taking the correct path out of this hell hole- but we are NOT meant to leave this lab I'm willing to bet. If this goes tits up, at least we tried. KILL EM' ALL
>>
>>31921688
Nah, them convening means that we're probably one of the only successful tests they've conducted today. They'll be going over data logs to figure out what caused us to be successful where other tests were failures. We probably still have time.
>>
>>31921740
Crucible in this context means "survival of the fittest." We are testing ourself.
>>
>>31921741
I didn't think of that. I'm a dolt, ignore me. Though, we could be put up high on the production list if we manage to get out THAT much faster after all.

>>
>>31921804
High adaptability. We know we have that, the rest seems like a pretty wide gambit. Still, if we act like we're consistantly going for the brain we could surprise them in the long run? I don't know, just inference here.
>>
>>31921804
Tapping into the nervous system of the host seems like one of the things they want, but we really don't have much information to go on.
>>
>>31921804
Also, the fact that they injected us in the leg instead of the ass ore higher up seems to preclude the idea that they wanted us to see some takeover of motor function, though I don't know exactly the motive behind that. That, too, is a guess.

You can stand it no longer. The mass hungers but yet it is not allowed to consume the host. What else can it do but turn on itself. There is a tense moment of silence amongst the mass. The deep voice in your consciousness lashes out. Fool. The mass launches into a frenzy upon itself. Cell rips into cell, some mass together and steam roll through. Rouge cells rip into their surroundings as they attempt to flee. The cohesive mass is in absolute bedlam and is destroying itself. Your mind reels in pain and fear. Your link to the host is disrupted. What little gets through from the network shows the leg is twitching just before it goes dark.

You reel as the self-feast winds down. You are fortunate that most of your sentries have remained safe but your mass is greatly diminished. With some effort you re-establish the link to the host and your mass. You are grievously injured, but the surviving cells are much stronger. They are almost impervious to macrophage attack and also fungal attack. You notice a brackish tinge in the atmosphere. The hunger is gone, replaced only with fear and worry. How do you proceed?

You are injured, though by your own hand. The time to act brashly is over. You order your cells to dig in and rest. Growth is slow and no new infiltration occurs. Your links solidify and you reestablish your link to the host. The mass is complacent and calm washes over it. Your consciousness slinks low and slips into an inky darkness.

[Link Reestablished]

Mass Size: ~3M Cells.

There is a sudden jolt wakes you from your rest. New senses bombard your consciousness. Light, Heat, Restraint, Pain. You reach out for your mass and you cannot find it. You can see, and you look down to see the host! You have seized the host’s senses again. No, this is different. Like you are the host. The thought disgusts you. Suddenly a series of forms appear in the host’s vision. Strange. Objects are waved over the host, there are pokes and prods. It is painful and you do not like it. You are unable to scream or speak, and curiously enough you cannot feel below the host’s midsection. Understanding the figures is just beyond your reach, as is speaking. You can feel yourself slipping down into the blackness again. What do you do?

You reach into the host’s memory, grasping at any thought that holds meaning. The mumbling of the things hovering over you, Doctors you think, begin to speak in words. You focus on their mouths, twitching and flaring beneath masks.

“The sample is progressing well. Intervention is not needed.” The first notes, consulting a noisy rectangle in its hands.

Another comments while looking away. “Sedation of host unnecessary. Pathogen has infected primary neural track. Immune system is not noticing the infection”

“Recommend, introduction of additional pathogens, following crucible protocol.” The last demands.

All three nod and move to turn away. You manage to break the fluid away from the host’s throat, making a wrenching, gagging noise. The doctors all turn and look down at your borrowed form.

“I thought you sedated him” One cries

“I did! Enough to keep the subject out for hours”

“What, am I?” you choke out.

The doctor’s eyes widen. They wordlessly scrabble about, checking instruments and readouts. You repeat the question, this time more clearly. One of the doctors strides into your field of vision, eyes narrowing as a needle presses into your neck. You stare him down, something unspoken passes between you. He speaks.

“You are a parasite. Do not fail”

The world of sensation fades away. The last thing you see before the darkness takes you again is a video playing out on a monitor. An ant bristles with white fuzz and stalks. The images pleases you, but you do not know why.

You sleep.
