Your hive continues to grow, but you are not without troubles. The enemy of the humans, the creatures known as the Unity, have found the human camp. You are unsure what their intentions are, but they will be in the camp soon. Your speaker drone struggles to move with its injuries, as do many of the humans who were also injured in the explosion.

In the sky you can see the three white spheres descending on the camp. The humans referred to them as Unity drones. They are close. Two of them stop with a loud burst of their thrusters and begin to circle the camp while the other arcs outward and moves down towards the far side of the camp. Your speaker is in no condition to run, although you are still not entirely sure if the drones would even recognize your drone as a threat.

You decide to take advantage of your drone's pitiful appearance. The speaker flops to the ground and remains still as the first Unity drone moves in. As it enters the camp an arc of lighting strikes it, sending it careening through the air and into the dirt. You expect it to have been destroyed, but after landing with a thud in the ground it begins to make a deep growling noise, and floats back into the air.

A group of healthy workers would make much better time. It took your speaker a day to walk the distance while helping a human with a broken leg. You guess it would take roughly six hours to travel the distance and six back, maybe more if they are carrying anything exceptionally heavy.

>>31877643
You contemplate sending your warriors to see if they could help in some way, but think better of it. The distance is too far, and you need them at your hive.

The unity drone spins around and lets out a loud and deep beeping sound as the long weapons on its sides focus in on the area the shot came from. A series of blinding bolts of light tear apart one of the large tree shelters, reducing it to ash and smoldering slag. The sphere emanates a series of wide beams of light and seems to scan the area with them before swiveling again to another shelter. The few humans that are still in the camp are swiftly vaporized before you, and the sphere begins to drift through the camp systematically destroying whatever was left of their supplies.

The supplies! Such a potential treasure trove of research and technology, and these things are reducing them to heaps of molten metal and plastic!

most of them have fled to the jungle for cover, a few have remained either while trying to gather one too many crates, or because they were too wounded to run. The sphere does not seem to make a distinction, and with each human found it makes the same loud beep and opens fire.

Your speaker crawls slowly over to one of the smaller crates, attempting to only move as the sphere is looking away. Eventually you manage to reach in and pick out the first thing you think can be hidden from the sphere's scanning. A small disk shaped object that fits in the speaker's claw. You stuff it in the ground and lay back down just as the crate explodes. The sphere floats to you and stairs you down as it attempt to understand what your drone is. Its face, if you could call it that, holds a single red eye positioned in a swivel on the right side of its front panel, while on the other side a blank disk flairs with the scanning beam. Eventually it lets out a high pitched beep and with several hisses of its maneuvering jets it returns to the air with the others.
The three spheres turn in opposite directions and move off into the distance. You are unsure if it thought your drone was dead, or if it simple didn't care.
Regardless, you managed to take a sample of...whatever this thing is.

You dispatch a team of workers to see if the Unity missed anything of value and tend to the speaker. A small team will suffice, and five workers halt their duties and move out of the hive.
Your speaker can still see a few of the humans in the jungle. They appear to be tending to wounded and accounting for supplies. There are far fewer of them now...

Your speaker quickly buries the small disk for the workers to collect later, and as you do so a small pile of rubble shifts and a singed hand thrusts forth. It appears Lee was slow but lucky. What do you wish to say?

Lee looks at you and begins to laugh. "For a giant bug you have a hell of a sense of humor. Damn tree fell on me when that thing opened fire. I was lucky most of it was ash or I would have been crushed instead of buried." Lee looks down at your speakers legs. "You look like how I feel..."

"Those were Unity? Explain."
"Ugh! and here I thought I had taught you small talk." Lee forces himself up on his side and begins waiving frantically to the treeline. A small number of humans sprint towards you and Lee in response.
"They refer to themselves as the Unity Networked System. Those things were just drones. They don't think on their own, but there's bound to be a ship in the system to control them. If you can blow the ship the drones deactivate. It's easier said than done though." He points to the sky. "Those things will be back to look for looters. In the meantime they will be setting up a search pattern."

Wait, the Unity are a hive also. Their hive has a thinker or a queen somewhere, the thinker must be transmitting to it's drones constantly if they shutdown as soon as the Queen dies.

So we need to figure out how to confuse the drones, or plug into them ourselves. EM modifications can pick up radio waves, so we just need a thinker and a few ways to scan for the Unity Drones until we can figure them out.

You ponder that question for a moment. A name... A moniker that signifies ones self as individual from others. You feel it would be appropriate to give yourself one, but what could possibly identify yourself in your entirety using only verbal speech?

You decide to take attempt to translate your thoughts and sense of self into sound. It would be the closest thing to a name you would have.

"I am ..." Lees smile disappears as your speaker utters a string of clicks and chirps.
"Ah... I think I'll just call you Junior...."

The human Lee waved to you kneels in the mossy grass and hesitates to touch you. She has a look of confusion on her face.
"Ok, c-can you walk?"
You stair back at her as one of the snapped legs twitches. "We require a brace."

Under your vague direction you manage to tie several sticks to your legs. It isn't much, but it should help them heal more quickly.

They move further into the jungle before too long and soon after you hear the loud blast of sound from the camp site. A loud horn like the cry of a dying animal. Sure enough, they had returned to search the camp once more. As your workers arrive the drones are gone, but the small disk is still buried in the dirt. They retrieve it along with anything left that could be of worth, which isn't much.

The workers begin their trek back to the hive with their haul. Several large slabs of melted slag that was no doubt once a collection of technology. You wish you could have taken them in their prime, but at the very least they can feed your growing hive.

The humans are in poor shape. There are hardly a dozen remaining, including the ones you spoke to before, Trevor and Seiner. The doctor seems preoccupied with wounded while Trevor is looking rather intently at a small map he has crudely carved into the dirt.

"If we can get to high ground here, we would at least be able to get a signal when the fleet gets here." He says.
Another human is stooped over the map with him ."Or we could set off the drones' sensors. We should stay around the jungle area, they will have a much harder time finding us." She circles a plot of the map with her finger.
"The jungle is how we lost the first few men. This place is just as deadly as the drones."

They continue the argument until night. Your workers return their metals and the humans begin to sleep. The first few sleep in their suits while most remain awake, lighting guns at the ready. They take shifts through the night.

As you organize your warriors you detect one of the drones flying closer. It quickly reaches the river before shinning a bright light across the water and along the riverbank. It swivels back to the jungle several times before returning to the water, slowly gliding over the stream. You are not sure if your hive entrance is visible from its position, but the worker standing watch can see it in plain view. Your worker ducks behind cover to stay out of sight and quickly looks around. None of the other drones can be seen in the fog, perhaps this one is alone?

How will the hive respond to this strange creature?

Your warriors detect a large amount of radio emissions coming from the sphere and it lets out another loud beep as the scanning light drifts over one of the small, dried up strips of land that mark where the water used to flow from your hive. You had diverted the water to a reservoir several days ago, but the marks of erosion remain quite evident.

The two other drones shoot past and follow the river up stream. One banks off into the canyon past your hive, while the other flies off back toward the remains of the human camp as it follows the rain runoff. The third slowly floats up the mountain, following the dried stream.

Your worker does its best to obscure the trail of erosion as the drone grows ever closer. It continues to let out a series of beeps as it moves closer.

Once you finish kicking up the mud along the dried stream you send your worker skittering down the side of the mountain, kicking up rocks and small plants. The drone swivels toward you and emits a loud roar in your direction as its weapons zero in.
The drone opens fire, pulverizing the rock around your drone in a hail of blind fire. Your worker drops to the ground and attempts to dodge the attack, ducking into a small alcove in the mountain as the drone's weapons pound the stone to dust.

You decide it is time you test your warriors in battle and send them forth. They emerge from the hive and see the drone firing into the mountain side. It must have a weakness, everything does.
You split up your warriors. The first takes position above with the thorn launcher while the other moves down behind it. The back of the drone is covered in small ports, thrusters and exhaust valves. They seem to be the only feature of the drone's otherwise blank armor.
Your warrior opens fire, peppering the floating sphere with chittinous slugs. They bounce off the armored shell and the drone's weapon arm swivels completely around and returns fire. Before you can react the warrior is thrown back, the carapace across its thorax melted into a twisted heap. Your other drone has better luck. The first shot of heavy chitin creates a dent in the side of its armor and knocks it off balance, causing it to hold its fire as it wavers back and forth. It doesn't last, however, and with a loud buzz of anger it turns to face the warrior, weapons at the ready. Your warrior drops behind the cliff face as the bolts of light tear apart the stone from below, its focus now entirely on the one warrior.

Your other warrior is alive, although damaged. The carapace along its front is too badly damaged to deflect another hit like that, and your worker managed to avoid being hit.

Your worker emerges from the small alcove and climbs over the smoldering rocks as your warrior takes aim. The worker lunges into the air, its claws outstretched towards it. It is surprisingly difficult to grip the surface, and even the vulnerable looking eye seems to be impervious to your workers jabs. It does, however, knock it off balance. The drone reels to the side as it dips downward from the lopsided weight of the worker, and soon the drone enters a wild spin. The worker starts to loose its grip, and despite it jabbing and slashing at the sphere it soon flies off and slams into the rock. The drone impacts the ground and rolls into the cliff wall before returning to the air, albeit slightly more shaky that before, and fires at the worker.

The worker dives out of the way, its leg catching enough heat to sear the flesh beneath the carapace as the drone turns to follow. As it does so your warriors line up their shots, and a hail of chittin peppers the drones back, denting and scraping at the small ports.
Either through luck or skill a pellet enters one of the maneuvering thrusters, causing a small explosion as it backfires into the delicately balanced mechanisms within, and the drone lets out a high pitched scream as it spins back into the dirt. The best it can manage is to spin in circles as it lets out a hail of weapons fire in all directions before bouncing off the mountain and rolling down to the riverbank, where it grows silent and still.

A moment later your warriors detect a faint radio pulse flickering rhythmically from the corpse...

How shall the hive respond?

Your drones rush the drone and begin to mercilessly stab at it with their claws in search of a way to silence the beacon. It seems nearly invincible against your attempts, but eventually your worker manages to pry open a small panel, revealing an intricate layer of circuitry and mechanical devices. Your worker stabs it repeatedly, and after a short amount of time you seem to find the right spot and the signal ceases.

"What the hell was that?" One of the humans says. They rouse those who had been sleeping and Trevor raises his head to try to hear the sound again.
"It sounded like drone fire. Zoe, Aldin, with me."
The three begin to move out in the direction of the sound of combat.

It takes the help of five of your workers to lift the drone. It is far heavier than its size would imply, although you wouldn't quite call it small. They lift the drone and quickly make for the hive with the sound of the drones getting closer and closer with every moment. Your warriors take up a position to protect the workers, and soon that precaution is justified as two drones move into sight. The first swoops down from above the mountain, laying waste to the patch of dirt the damaged drone once inhabited while the other moves in from up stream. It stops abruptly as it reaches the drone and lights shoot from each side of its armored chassis.

It lets out a loud buzz and swivels its arms downward, eviscerating the closest worker with a hail of fire. Your warriors return fire, aiming for the ports along its back but the drone is moving too quickly to line up a shot. It swivels from spot to spot, ripping apart the landscape with its cannons as it guns down the workers. You make them scatter in search of cover, or at the very least to try to confuse it, but as they spread out the second drone moves in once more.

Your workers leap into the air, crawling over the crumbling debris as they claw at the nearest drone. It attempt to evade but is soon overwhelmed by the remaining two workers. It struggles to maintain its balance with the added weight and hits the ground with a thump. Its cannons swivel in a mad panic in an attempt to throw them off, but the workers persist, clawing and gnawing on whatever they can reach. One of the workers jabs at the panel on the drone's face, and manages to pry it open, and with their powerful jaw their rip the wires and circuits and tear at the sensitive gyroscope keeping it aloft. The drone enters a spin, still firing blindly and several of the bolts graze the second drone, which has moved in closer to attack.

Your workers finally loose their grip, but as they fly from the panicked drone it launches itself to the side, impacting the other drone and sending them both into the ground. Your drones dive for cover as the riverbank explodes from the collision and the Unity drones disappear into a column of blue-white flame. You quickly send out several other workers to retrieve the damaged drone, and the bodies of the lost workers.

Soon after your lookout spots the humans at the edge of the jungle. They poke at the smoking crater with a number of small metal objects while Trevor looks up to the mountain, examining the signs of combat at a distance.
I think I'll have to call it here since it's getting so late. Will try to stay around for questions and feedback as always.

so both new drones were burned to slag just now, and they're only retrieving the original one we damaged?

Did the drones fly across the river to the jungle side then if the humans are reaching them?
>>
>>31883427
Hahaha. Damn that was awesome QuestDrone. Thanks for the thread, I look forward to next time
>>
>>31883427
>We beat us three Unity Drones
Sweet. There is some mad tech loot to go around. Or at least, metal loot. I love it.

Good thread QD, glad I could make it after I was done with my quest

Thanks for running!

good stuff

>back to look for looters
This word choice, I couldn't figure it out, and I still can't.

They want to destroy all these humans regardless of looting activity.

also i'm assuming the beaconsplosion would have happened even if our speaker never visited the human camp?
>>
>>31883427
You know, if they'd have lost one utility drone, they might have written that off to hostile wildlife, but three makes them extra suspicious.
>>
>>31883516
Eh, for all they know, a bunch of bugs got lucky. They've seen plenty of monsters around, I'm sure.

I doubt they'll come hunting for a few lost pieces of hardware. They seemed to want the humans, anyway, and the sooner we get them off this planet (aka 'help' them) the better, I say.
>>
>>31883476
>>31883461
Thank you too.
>>31883455
The wreckage is a massive, burning heap. The humans don't seem interested in the salvage so much as what could have destroyed them. Your drones didn't have the time to wait for the fires to burn out before the humans got their, but you will be able to salvage the slag later.
>>31883465
which quest?
>>31883495
Well after the first attack the drones would want to make sure nobody tried to return to look for supplies later, just in case. They have...had a large search area to cover, so any location of interest would be useful.
That's why they were looking at the river, searching water and food sources.

two hours of arguing about potential drone configurations before the plot advances?

I knew it.

How far away exactly are the humans from the hive? And how far away was the scene of the fight from both camps?

yo did we lay the egg for the radio array or not, what was its cost and upkeep

I'm a huge fan of yours. One of the things that inspired me to run this one, actually.
>>
>>31883592
Aw, was it that obvious?

>>31883604
Whoa, really? I'm flattered, you're too kind.
Also it feels like all my favorite quests run the same day mine does, so I usually play catch up.
>>
>>31883577
Oh myyy
>>
>>31883590
I really need to clean that part up. Hopefully it will move faster in those parts, especially once you get a decent number of designs set up.

>>31883598
After they ran into the jungle they were just a mile or two from the hive. It still took them a few hours to get to the river, but they could hear the drones rather easily.

>>31883602
I don't think you did, but it would be quite cheap and fast to make, so I will assume you layed it earlier and we can finalize its design next thread.
>>
>>31883651
Speaking of which. What days and times would be best for everyone? I usually try to find a day on the weekend I know i'll be free, but I DM for a bunch of people and it tends to make for a hectic schedule.
>>
>>31883706
for me, whenever
>>
>>31883706
Whenever is generally fine for me.
>>
>>31883706
Any day should be just fine by me. Pick whichever is freest for you.
>>
Cool. Will probably go back to Sunday evening for next week, but i'll post on the twitter when I know for sure.
>>
>>31883651
Timing was clear man. You got saved by the 404 there.
>>
>>31883850
Heh, ah I see. Well it always dies fast, around 12 or so. Not sure why.
Weird that the first part of this quest went into autosage...wonder what was up with that.
>>
>>31883894
Some mod hated the arguing going on there and lack of...quest-ing?

we did advance a cycle at the end there right i didn't see much voting
>>
>>31883953

It was a rich charged debate on methods of mining minerals on a fungus planet.
And we still haven't mined anything.
>>
>>31883953
I've seen worse arguing in threads that warranted less response.

I assume glitch.

Yup.
>>
>>31883953
Well it did help move things along I guess.
I think I'll set up a couple of "recommended" builds to try to speed up the design process, because it does chew into questing time that could be better spent eating things of unknown origin and swarming horrible death robots.

damn for a minute there i forgot which quest you were talking about.
>>
>>31883993
That's what I think. Things have been acting wonky lately and if it was a mod who just didn't like the quest he could have just deleted it.
I blame the curse.
>>
>>31883995
Oh hey, about that.

I find the best thing to do when you have a lot of minor choices and can't get people to vote on each and every one is to take the most logical suggestions proposed, list what they will entail, then ask 'will you make/keep this, and if not, explain one better'.

If you don't get many talking about what they want to change, just that they disagree, then it's better to move on.

I use to run into the problem of wanting to fluff every post, even with minor decisions.
Sadly, I just don't have the time anymore. Even tho I keep trying to do it.

>>31884004
Holy shit, is this Aquil?
>>
>>31884019
Indeed, and mods aren't allowed to delete entire threads based on personal preference like that.

Hell, I don't even think there's a mod option that lets them turn off bumps.
If there is, that's weirdly cruel, when you could just delete something.
>>
>>31884021
Yea, that's usually what I try to do, but I guess I'm still new at this. Even still, a few starter builds should be able to get a conversation going in a general direction, like the crappy pre-made ships in Galactic Civ.

>>31884038
Yea, it's like shooting you in the gut and leaving you in the streets. I think it was just random chance, and I wish the anon that archived it didn't blame the mods.
Oh well, shit happens, as my dad always used to say.
>>
>>31884071
Pfff, haha, Galactic Civ's pre made ships.
Holy crap man. Those were the worst.

Wonder what things would've been like if we never helped the humans, also. Just milling around, exploring the wilderness.
Still wanna eat those herbivores man.
>>
>>31884071
I find it funny you've had two 4chan glitches and you've not even broke 10th thread.

Gonna be a fun ride.

>Archive anon blamed mods
Aw. Well that's unfortunate.
>>
>>31884021
you never replied to the mysterious hologram suggestions either also, did you see them
>>
>>31884089
Your guess is as good as mine. I would probably have done some rolls to see just how far up shit creek they were, and how often they would find signs of your activity, and just how spooked they would get from it.

>>31884100
Smooth sailing makes for a boring journey.
>>
>>31884146
I wrote em down, yeah.

>>31884161
>Your guess is as good as mine
Now that's the right attitude for adventure!
>>
>>31884161
Maybe we can propose designs to you with certain purposes, and then you translate that into template that we can pick from?

Forbid individual part choosing to speed things along.
