After long weeks and aching feet, you pass through the eastern cities, towering testaments to humanity's love of dominance and comfort. Maurice's discomfort in these towns is well noted, however Pietra seems right at home. She blends into the bustling crowds well, and has been quite useful in stretching your gold as well as it can be. You finally reach the city of invention, Theron, on the north-east coast of the continent. The city smells of the ocean, and has an enormous complex of buildings at its center which you are told is actually a small town that was re-purposed as a school, and quite a difficult one at that.

You approach the town, recalling what the mission file stated about this place. The people are not very welcoming of the religious, and often equate devoutness with ignorance. Still, they are polite most of the time, and value anyone who is willing to work for his keep. The man you must see resides within the stone halls of the school that the city surrounds, and with some luck you may be able to convince him to journey back with you to Lumen and help bolster the defenses of the town.

As morning arrives, you and the others approach the city limits. You are still dressed in your armor, and the others in theirs. The weather is still chill enough to justify coats, thankfully. You've got thirty gold pieces left with you, as well.

After morning preparations, the four of you pack your things and head for the town. Finally, months of travel has come to it's halfway point.

As you walk the streets, you find yourself receiving odd looks here and there. Most of them come from town law enforcement. Though you personally are used to guards in armor from Lumen, you know that most towns on the west side of the Frozen Peaks can't afford to outfit their police with breastplate and shortsword as well as iron shield and spear like the guards here sport. Pietra seems to take mental note of the number of guards, as well as their positioning.

You continue moving toward the center of town until finally you reach a place where new buildings give way to old ones, and you see fewer working class people. You see fewer people overall, really. The ones you see now are either quite young or very old, and all dress in robes of some sort. They move here and there carrying bags of books and possibly tools, and none of them seems very relaxed.

She looks exhausted and filthy, half covered in blood and doused with mud and dirt.

You look back to Maurice.

The three of you watch as Pietra moves from person to person, interrupting their day to ask questions. Many of the men she speaks to seem flustered by her, but you can only speculate on what she's saying. Eventually she seems to have gathered all she can, and returns to the group jauntily.

"Are these people monks? They dress like monks. Do you think they're any good at fighting?"

You finally arrive at the door of an office after scaring off the majority of the school. Pietra knocks on the door politely, but there is no response. She tries again, but still nobody comes to answer. The group looks to you.

You grab the knob and open the door. Since it's unlocked, you assume nothing too private must be going on inside.

As you enter, you see a great number of paper rolls and boxes thrown around the room. The mess is almost deliberate in it's efficiency at covering the floor. You walk through with the others, trying your best not to crush anything that looks important, as you approach a desk. Behind this desk is the crumpled form of a snoring man who holds a large and nearly empty bottle of dark brown liquid in a limp hand. He drools over the fine wood and beside him are more papers and books.

Pietra tests him, and deduces that he must be at least three bottles deep.

He wipes it away and takes a swig from what remains of his bottle before looking around at all of you.

"S-so are you here to steal more of my, ugh, work or what?" His speech is broken up with the occasional hiccup and dry heave.

You offer the man the opportunity to come back to Lumen with you, along with his family, and take up residency on the city's coin. He laughs quietly, then tosses his bottle at a stack of books across the room, just missing Kor as she turns to the side.

"I can't rebuild the thing from scratch! All my notes, everything I wrote down, it's gone! To remake it would take years! I never even completed a proper prototype, so even that is out of the question." He sighs and buries his face in his hands. "No, no. This is all my fault. If I weren't such a braggart and a loudmouthed drunk, I would have had time to finish the first model. But now I'm up the creek, and the rapids are coming on fast."

At the very least it will help me test my theories more accurately than mathematical simulation." You agree, and shake hands to seal the deal. You ask him if he's got any leads on who would have taken his plans.

"Not really no. I spent a few nights bragging in taverns downtown, so anyone who overheard could have done it. Provided they had the ability to sneak in and out of my office, of course. I don't know much about the underworld here, so I'm afraid that's all I can say to help.

You tell Maurice to stay and wait, and that you'll be back soon enough. He is quite against you going alone, but you assure him that everything will be fine.

As you approach the rounded desk, you look into the eye of the man behind it. Thanks to a tip from a rather odorous homeless man, you learn that two women fitting Kor and Pietra's description were seen going into a seedy bar just before sunset. It's gotten a bit dark now, and so you hurry to collect them before it's too dark to see.

The bar you enter is nearly empty, with no one out front but the bartender, a rail thin man with a well waxes mustache, and a couple of rough looking fellows drinking at the bar. You approach them.

You look back at him with all the red hot intensity he tries to project at you. He grinds his teeth as he tries to overpower your will, but the longer you hold on, the angrier he seems to become. Finally something breaks the silence in the room, as you hear a crash behind you. You turn quickly to see Maurice with the shattered splinter of a stool still floating in the air around him, almost as if the world has slowed down. He hits the bar and nearly collapses as the man beside him holds the cracked seat of a stool in his hands and grins. When you turn back to the man staring you down, you are greeted by a closed and hard fist to the cheek that almost knocks you off your feet. You step back to regain your balance, then look up to see him coming down with a wild haymaker.

As the punch comes down, you try to respond with one of your own, throwing a fast cross to hopefully take advantage of his lowered defense and trade a blow for a blow. This does not work.

While your punch clearly connects, his does too and somehow feels to have more impact. It knocks you back again, and into his ally who grabs you in a hold. The man who punched you wipes a bit of blood from his lip and approaches you, cracking his knuckles as you fight to free yourself.

You bring your leg around and hook the leg of a stool. With a single kick, you fling it at him, in order to distract him as you bring your sword around.

He catches the stool by the leg, and by some strange miracle, uses it to block the great heft and blade you bring down upon him. By all rights, the stool should have shattered or at the very least splintered under such force. The man begins swinging the stool wildly at you, laughing all the while.

You step backward, keeping the distance between the two of you, and waiting for a good moment to strike back at him. That moment presents itself as he goes for a sloppy thrust with the stool, allowing you to knock it from his hands and come in with a powerful downswing.

You are nearly stunned when the man turns his head to one side, and catches the blade between his yellowing teeth. He clamps down like a savage dog, digging his fangs into the steel and trapping your blade.

This brings the fight to a draw, as neither of you is able to act without giving the other an opening. The two of you stand, again staring one another down for a minute or two, until the tables are finally turned by Maurice's rejoining the quarrel. He dusts off his robes and reaches into his deep pockets, drawing out a card. He holds it before the man, still gripping your sword tight, and making the fight two to one.

You give the thug one last chance to give up and avoid further harm. As a bit of saliva starts to drip from his mouth, he looks between you and Maurice. He then closes his eyes, and relaxes his body. However, just as you assume he is about to give up, he tenses up again, and begins biting down hard on your sword. The metal cracks, and finally is cut by his teeth. He rights his head and spits the chunk of metal at you, and attempts to charge.

His feet are pulled out from beneath him, and he is hoisted into the air, trapped by a wreath of blue fire. You turn to Maurice, who seems to regret needing to spend a card, but at the same time neither of you know for certain you could have stopped this man without killing him. Even now he thrashes and swings like a wild animal in a pointless attempt at freedom. You look around the bar. You agree to his terms, and let him stand. Before continuing you ask about his partner and his odd abilities. He simply explains that he hails from an island nation to the far, far northeast. They practice a deadly fighting are their, which is why he was hired to guard the bar. You aren't completely sure, but you accept the explanation. Then, the cowardly thug sidles past his ally, who threatens death should he give you any more answers. Still, it seems the favors possible future death over possible immediate death.

The man walks around the bar, beckoning you to follow. He reaches up and pulls a bottle of tomato juice from one of the shelves, and the shelf begins sliding away to reveal a secret door. He opens it for you, and you look in.

Down a short set of stairs just beyond the soundproof door is a large and dimly light room. At the center is a circle made from chalk and splotched with blood both fresh and old. As you push through the crowd, you notice how many of them are carrying large amounts of money openly. At the very least they seem to trust this establishment.

There is no sign of either Pietra or Kor as you move around. The fight wraps up as one of the competitors is dragged off bleeding, and the other is handed a pouch stuffed with gold. The sight of this place is slightly disturbing.

"Sir! I've found them!" Maurice points across the room. There you see a large and well toned woman dressed in arm, leg and chest wraps, as well as loose pants. She continues to motivate her and pep her up for her next opponent. While you aren't doubtful of Kor's strength, you do worry somewhat about that of her opponent. If the man at the front was any indication, they may have some truly astonishing fighters here. Suddenly, a voice rings out through the basement, silencing the crowd.

"Gentlemen! The fight you've all been waiting for is a bout to begin! At ringside now is our up and coming challenger: the island dream, the paradise princess, the unstoppable wild animal of the west, Kor!" The crowd cheers and boos all together. "And entering now, standing an impressive six foot ten, our reigning champion and beloved thirteen time convicted murderer: Johnny McFinnigan!" From the crowd emerges a large and powerfully built man. His size makes even the largest paladins look like mere farmhands. His upper body is covered in scars from any number of weapons, and there is a large burn on the side of his face reaching all the way down to his neck. He is wearing shorts made from a shiny material, and has his hands wrapped in old rope. Two men behind behind him adjust his hand wraps as he stares down Kor. She looks up at him with disdain. Pietra's prior confidence seems to waver a bit, but it's too late by now, and soon Pietra gets to her feet and heads to meet the beast of a man in the center of the ring.

Kor enters the ring and bumps her chest against the beastly man, apparently named Johnny. They circle each other for a moment, as the crowd shouts for blood. They bare their teeth and drag their feet across the ground, kicking up dust like roosters preparing to slice one another.

A bell rings somewhere in the room, and the two begin going at each other. Johnny strikes out with a jab so quick you barely have time to register it before it has already collided with Kor's nose. She stumbles back, and Johnny continues his onslaught. He throws several lightning fast punches that nearly all collide with her head, and the few that don't are narrow misses at best. Kor tries to raise a defense, but he knocks her arms away with hooks and uppercuts so tremendously lethal that you can feel the wind coming off of them from outside the ring.

His onslaught of uncontested blows continues, pushing Kor all around the ring and beating on her like a dusty rug. You see blood dripping now, and Pietra has begun hugging your arm out of nervousness. Surprisingly, Maurice seems completely unphased by the cruel vision before him.

As Kor hurls a barrel of water at the men, you spot two places to finish off the remaining men. You turn tail and make for the nearest alleyway to escape. Pietra's flasher lasts just long enough for you to get out of sight, and duck down behind some bins. The men spread out to look for you, but none of them come close to finding you. It seems you're safe again for now.

"Hehe. Four hundred and eighty-two gold coins, all mine!" Pietra produces a fat bag of coin, nearly ready to burst. She plays with it and touches it to her cheek. Kor demands her cut, but Pietra assures her she's only holding her half since Kor does not posses a wallet. Kor thinks on this for a moment, then agrees. She is still bleeding a bit from the fight earlier.

"Pietra! My clothes are all in there! I don't want to walk around in bandages, people will notice how pale my legs are!" Despite Kor's skin being one smooth and flawless tone, you can sympathize with her. Pietra merely shrugs.

You decide to find a place to rest before moving on. Pietra claims to have found a good place during her search, so you follow her. All the way there, she plays with the bag of coins. Juggling it, listening to it jingle, and touching her nose to it as if it could return her affection.

When you finally arrive at the inn, you find it to be more of a resort. It is quite grand, clearly a palace or mansion repurposed to serve as a place of hospitality. Pietra leads you in and you find yourself in a grand, carpeted lobby. A man in a fine suit greets you as you enter, and Pietra leads you to the front desk, a solid slab of marble. The man behind it greets you, and asks Pietra, being the one armed with a sack of gold, about your arrangements. She asks for four full course dinners, bath tickets, and two rooms. You let Pietra fall asleep on your plated shoulder. Despite knowing that it must be slightly uncomfortable, she seems to drift of fairly quickly. You continue driving.

You pass by city after city, stopping only when supplies grow very low. Besides bathroom breaks, your feet almost never touch the ground. Every day Maurice and Kor play card games in the wagon, and Pietra edges a few inches closer to you in the front seat, until she spends nearly every day leaning on you for comfort. The trip that took you months before is cut in half thanks to the horses, and even more considering how hard you push them. With a little under three-hundred and seventy gold left, you should be more than able to make it to the south.

You decide that it would be best to hire a guide, one that knows the area and it's dangers well. Pietra and Maurice watch the cart, while you and Kor hop down to look around a small village.

The place is made up of mostly huts, and people go about their days happy as can be. They smile as you pass by, but very few of them understand much of what you say. Eventually, you need Maurice to translate, which he does, fluently.

He explains to the people that you want to pay someone to lead you through the forest to a temple, where one of your comrades is trapped. The villagers mumble amongst themselves, and eventually one of them asks what you're willing to give in exchange.

In an hour or so, you're packed and on your way down a narrow road leading up a hill and into the treeline. The further you walk, the harder it becomes. The roots grow so entangled at some points, you find yourself walking on wood for several minutes. You tire by nightfall, and Kor begins carrying Maurice slung over her shoulder like a babe. He pants and sweats. As you walk, your guide tells you how fortunate you are to have visited during the cold season, or else the humidity would have you boiling inside your armor.

That night, you make camp as per the guides instructions. You are not allowed a fire, since it may attract deadly things, and must climb into trees to sleep.

"If you feel something fall onto you while you sleep, get up immediately. It may be a snake, or something else looking to eat you." Maurice translates even as he yawns. Pietra hops from branch to branch to reach you.

That night you have yet another dream. This one does not involve the snake anymore, but your old companion the black river. As you look around, you feel the same cool breeze, and see the same dark blue and empty sky, deep blue grass, and enormous white moon hanging overhead. You feel pain engulf you as you hit the jungle floor. You roll over onto your back and look around. It's morning. Pietra hops down from her branch and runs over to you.

You hand the card back to Maurice and he stuffs it into the deck. You eat together silently.

When your guide returns, the four of you grab your things and begin following him further into the dense jungle. He comments on some of the flora and fauna, but Maurice only half translates most of it, explaining a few names that go in one ear and out the other, and a couple of semi-interesting facts. The guide warns you about the wildcats that roam the jungle as the apex predator, but does offer the comfort that traveling in a group like this is the best deterrent.

The guide continues to speak about things in the jungle, but Maurice seems to grow tired of translating them. This pattern of walking lectures continues for days, as the four of you are converted into marching zombies by the terrible footing, constant droning, and endless walking. Soon, walking becomes a completely autonomous function of your bodies. You walk because you must walk, and you must walk because you must walk. You stop to sleep, eat, and use the bathroom, but the scenery stays the same mass of lush green and colorful flowers.

One day as you stop to rest, the guide begins speaking through a mouth full of jerky, and Maurice tanslates.

"Tomorrow we will come within sight of the temple. It will still be a days walk away, perhaps two. Once we can see it, I must leave you, or risk the curse."

You ask the guide if he knows anything about the way to the temple after.

"None in my village remember a time when we drew closer. Nor in the other villages. Anybody who comes too close never returns. Some say there is a god residing there, who grew hateful from lack of sacrifices. I think it will only be more jungle though, until you come to the valley where the temple is built."

You finish eating and get to bed. Thoughts of the path ahead are heavy in your mind, but in time sleep does find you. The dream, recurring nearly every night now, as far as you can remember, happens once more. Blue grass, black water, white moon, and a door in the distance which opens just before you wake up. Thankfully you don't fall out of the trees anymore.

You climb down as the others begin eating, and set out. Not three hours later, you crest a hill behind the guide, who calls back to you. He point to the distance, and you do indeed see three great pyramids in a vallet a ways away.

"These are the temple. The center one is the largest, and is said to be home to the god. I will leave you now. Remember what I have taught you, and you should be able to get back alive."

You thank the guide for taking you as far as he has, and watch as he heads back the way you came. With that, the four of you are left alone, with a long walk ahead to look forward to.

You descend the other side of the hill and head toward the valley. The air here is thick with something you can't quite put your finger on. It's also warm to the point that you all must abandon your layers, with the exception of Maurice who needs his robes for storage.

Night comes, and you are nearly there. You stop to rest one last time before the final leg. As Kor meditates and Maurice slumbers, Pietra goes to make water while you examine your damaged sword. It will still function to kill, but not for long. You'll need to get it repaired as soon as you find an able smith.

"Hey!" A loud whisper sounds from behind you. You turn to find the source. "Come here, I need you to help me with something!" Pietra motions for you from behind a tree.

You ask Pietra what the matter is. She throws her head back in frustration.

"We both know what I want, so can we skip the part where we tease each other and just move on to the part where I made us a soft bed and want to cuddle?"

A) "You need sleep, not cuddling."

You stand, exasperated, and move over to where Pietra stands. When you arrive at the tree, she proudly displays what can only be described as a pile of leaves. She does seem awfully proud of it, though.

"I made sure they aren't itchy, so don't worry about that. Plus, this is where the others can't see us, so you don't have to be shy. You can do, er whatever comes natural. So, is it finally time to live up to your word?" Pietra bites her lip and hugs herself in anticipation. You feel quite exhausted form the trip, and yet you have made a promise.

A) "We can lay down together, but that's it."

You agree, but only for a few minutes before bed. Pietra grins and reaches her arm under your breastplate. You're amazed that her hand is nimble enough to fit. She yanks on something, and the plate loosens, nearly falling off.

"It won't be as comfy is you're wrapped up. Take it off." She seems to be sadistically enjoying this now. You removes most of your armor, leaving only your boots which are plated by design. Pietra plops down into the pile and pats the spot beside her, and you follow. She leans on your shoulder, and now you can finally feel her warmth on your skin, as opposed to before when the steel blocked contact. Somehow you find yourselves laying down together, as Pietra nuzzles your shoulder.

"If I remember what Annalise said, I'm supposed to rest my head here and my arm on your chest. Is this right?"

Pietra begins to emulate the same position that you and Annalise often take. She seems comfortable enough for a while, and soon you find yourself drifting off just a bit. You are brought back to full awareness by her blowing into your face.

"There was another part of our deal. Gimme."

A) "This is enough for now, let's just sleep."
