So, sorry about the postponement. Long story short, if you weren't watching the weather news, that system that mashed up the midwest spawned some pretty gnarly storms here too. Tried to do a bit of amateur storm chasing, got foiled by a downed tree. Lotta lightning though, so that was cool. Oh, and flash flooding, that too. That was less cool.

Anyway, yeah. Archives here:

++

This time around, Wendy was up before you- matter of fact, she's the one that actually got you out of the rack.

That had kind of surprised you- you know for a fact she had to have gotten to sleep later than you, Ice had a lot more packing than you did, and her rooms, still unfurnished, needed to be seen to, with the house staff knowing what to pull out of storage and what purchases to make on her behalf.

You, of course, didn't have to worry about that- your rooms were one of the many loaner suites in the building- Guardian you may be, but rate your own rooms you do not. At least not this time around. Not, you suspect, that you'd have any problem staying in Ice's rooms when she's here, but you figure that you don't really need to voice that. Especially considering, according to the rumors Wendy's brought back, most of the house staff already figures you and Ice are an item, and you're just being polite by not advertising it right now. You haven't really had the time to set the record straight, but you notice that Ice, who has, hasn't tried. Or, if she tried, didn't apparently try very hard.

I got so much rain in the back yard that I got a small lake.....nothing but rain for days....KILL ME!
>>
Still, it's nice to not have to wait on the way out the door- checking out is something like leaving a hotel, though you let Ice talk to Mary. As the matron of the house, and the woman in charge of everything under it's roof, she's also the one who keeps track of the guests staying in the house, necessitating chatting with her before you leave. Instead, however, you busy yourself helping Wendy move the luggage, somewhat expanded, now, to include an old US army footlocker, out to the van and from there to the train. Not that you have any problem with Mary- far from it, she's been polite and professional the entire time you've been here- but you are kind of anxious to get back to Barin and flying.

The train carries you to Ipswitch, where you've barely got enough time to make it to the docks to meet the supply ferry headed out to the island- your ride back. Despite being forewarned about passengers, the security at the docks holds you up briefly while they double check your identity, then wave you all aboard, where the captain warns you to stay out of the way of the loading and shows you to the small lounge for passengers. From Ipswitch, the small ship will follow the coast, heading to Barin Island to unload it's cargo- and you.

2/3 (oops)
>>
The actual sea leg of the trip isn't scheduled to be that long- the weather is surprisingly agreeable. Even with that said, though you're warned that people tend to not last long in the cold waters of the channel, so going overboard is risky, at best. Given the way the small ship handles the water, you're glad you've been to sea before.

But, while you and Ice have long since overcome seasickness and learned to walk, even in the riotous conditions of a gale- the worst either of you have ever been to sea in- Wendy hasn't, and is looking a bit green.

“You ok Wendy?” Ice asks, a split second before you do.

“Never been on a ship before.” She says, a hand on her stomach.

“First time is always the worst.” Ice says, nodding. “If you want, we can go walk around on deck, the air might help.”

[] Agree with Ice- the air might help and walking around might take her mind off it.
[] Just let her ride it out in here- not much you can really do, and you don't want to get in the way.

The best way to deal with it, you know, is to sleep, but this is a short enough trip you doubt it's worth the effort. Not to mention, going to sleep in the passenger lounge, even for people like you, is probably out of the question- let alone for Wendy. Impressive though she may be, she's not a combat vet, and the time-honored skill of being able to sleep anytime, anywhere, is one she probably hasn't picked up. Yet.

“Ice is right.” You say, nodding and standing up. “C'mon, let's go walk around a bit, the air will help.”

You and Ice end up standing on opposite sides of her- it's almost funny, really, seeing someone without their sea legs trying to learn to walk, even in a relatively calm sea like this. You tense up somewhat as she approaches the chain railing along the sides of the deck- it's calm, but that doesn't mean shit can't happen. You've seen people go overboard with less chop than this.

“This does help, a little.” She says, her voice still shakey. “I don't see how you do it. You're at sea all the time.”

Ice laughs. “That's how we do it.” She says, simply.

Wendy nods. “I gue-” She cuts herself off to lean sharply over the side of the ferry as her stomach empties itself into the water below.

“Feel better?” You ask, handing her your handkerchief.

She nods. “A little.”

“Guess it's a good thing we came out here.” You say, shaking your head as she tries to hand it back. “Hold onto it.”

You and Ice try to keep her talking- distractions can help too, and even with as short as the trip is, you find yourself wishing the small ship would move faster.

“So what's this ferry carrying, anyway?” You ask, looking around- there's a few steel shipping containers lashed down on the deck, and you know there's plenty of crates down in the hold.

>>
Ice shrugs. “Fuel, food, parts. Little bit of everything, really.” She says. “Barin's hosting a lot more people than it usually does right now, and you and the twins are burning through the jet fuel there a lot faster than most people expected.”

“You'd think they'd have planned for this a little better.” You say.

Ice looks over at you. “They did.” She says. “But matrons aren't exactly up to speed on the care and feeding of a modern fighter aircraft. Let alone two of the most cutting edge ones in service.”

She motions down at the deck of the ship. “There's supposed to be a couple bigger fuel tanks down there, they'll be installed by the castle engineers to give us a bigger supply for you and the twins, because right now we're using war-era tanks they installed for the five oh one in the forties, and they didn't burn near the fuel you do.”

You nod- it makes sense- and nudge Wendy lightly in her ribs, pointing out the island coming into view. “Couple more minutes.” You say.

As you near the castle, you frown at the familiar howl of a pair of wyvern engines. Ice looks up at the castle runway, too, mirroring your frown.

“That's the twins.” She says. “But I wonder what they're doing? They're just supposed to be flying chase for the testing phase.”

You shrug as the wyvern leaps from the end of the runway, the blue plume of it's afterburner flame clearly visible even in the daytime. “Camera system integration?”

Ice shrugs- no witches follow them up, so it's not an alert, and ten minutes later, long after the twins have faded into the distance, heading east, your ship bumps up to the smaller dock on the island.

“Ah, the baron be returnin', I see.” A familiar voice greets you with a chuckle. “And who be dis? A new girl already? Baron, you be settin' a hard example to follow.”

[x] “Oh hi Brigette. What brings you here?”

“Oh hi Brigette.” You greet, tossing her your personal bag before heading down the ramp. “So what brings you here?”

“Asset protection.” She says, tossing the bag back to you once you're on the dock. “My girls an' me, we be watchin' your planes and you. Russians have a bounty on ya, ya know.”

You nod, noting she's wearing a pair of camoflagued tank strikers and is carrying a rifle- an M-14, you note, like Ice's. “That dire?” You ask, indicating her strikers.

She laughs and shrugs. “No, but we don't be wantin to get caught off guard.” She says.

“So you think there's a threat, then?” Ice says, reading into it.

The Spec ops witch shrugs. “You be havin three Russians here who don't be under your command. One of them you've tangled with before, and one is...” She trails off, looking for words. “She's not natural. Something off about dat girl.”

“I hope you're not patrolling the island like we're under imminent threat of being invaded any day.” Ice says.

Brigette fixes her with a stare, the friendliness gone. “You be worrin' about your flyin and the air, white witch, you be leavin the ground to me an' mine. Me an my girls know what we're doin'. There be one on duty in the hangar now, an she be stayin there, I'm thinkin'.”

You laugh, shouldering your bag and following Ice off the dock, up towards the castle proper- noting you'll be going in through the hangar.

Wendy looks around, wide-eyed, at the striker racks, her gaze stopping on the rack occupying the formerly empty number seven spot in line, almost under your fighter's wing. “My strikers!” She cries, running over to them to run her hands along the metal.

“Those are yours?” Kenji asks, emerging from beneath your fighter, indicating with his eyes you should look up. You do so just in time to catch Merlin's flying hug- she must have practically jumped off the wing to hit you like that.

“Frank! Y-you're back!” She cries happily, hugging you.

Wendy nods as Merlin adjusts herself to ride on top of your shoulders. “Yes. What's wrong with them?”

Kenji sighs. “They're gutted.” He responds, simply. “They're just shells, really.”

“O-oh no....” Wendy whimpers, slumping down near them. “T-they must have-”

Wargame is made by Eugen, a French company, in France.

The Rafale is a French designed and fielded jet fighter. Eugen has a somewhat bad rap when it comes to balance decisions regarding France. (Roland 3, a joint German-French project being French only in Wargame ALB for example.)

[x] “Can you fix them, Kenji?”

You frown, looking at the tears welling up in Wendy's eyes as she holds onto her gutted strikers for support. Girl is incredibly attached to her equipment, and you can't really fault her for it. After all, her rifle and her strikers were probably her only 'friends' of a sort, and this... well.

“Can you fix them, Kenji?” You ask, looking back at the striker tech. He frowns.

“Fix them?” He asks, shaking his head. “Probably not, it'd be like building a new pair from scratch.”

Wendy wails at this, sitting in front of the stand, tears flowing freely down her face. “T-they- they... “

His frown deepens. “I- Hmm.” He looks up at Merlin, then over at the striker shells hanging in their rack.

“They're ADV models, older ones, but...” He trails off, then looks back at you. “If her imperial highness gives us the time and you can give us the parts, perhaps we can do something.” He says, looking up at Merlin.

You feel her weight shift on your shoulders as she nods. “I-I think so too. They look long enough t-to house the same turbines we've got in the wyvern units b-but it would eat into our supply of spare parts for a while.”

“How long?” Ice asks.

Kenji shrugs. “A week? We'll need her on hand the entire time, too.”

Ice nods. “Ok, consider the order given. I'll talk to her Imperial highness myself if I need to.”

Kenji nods, turning around with a salute and yelling for his crew. Wendy, sniffling, looks at you, then Ice, wide-eyed. “W-what's he going to do?”

You shrug. “Kenji and Merlin here work miracles on a regular basis. If any can get them operational again, it's him.”

“A-and me.” Merlin says from your shoulders.

“And Merlin.” You amend. “Now c'mon, there's more to get done. Merlin, how's the jet?”

1/3
>>
“Perfect.” She responds. “A-any more tinkering would just cause problems.”

“Excellent.” You respond, careful to duck a bit lower under the doors so Merlin clears them.

Wendy follows you, still sniffling, but that's probably just residual, you think.

You head upstairs, noting the castle seems kind of empty, and drop your bag in your room. Ice does the same, them motions for you to follow her to her office.

Once inside, Ice gathers up a stack of papers on the desk, giving them a cursory glance with a sigh, and motioning for you to close the door and sit.

“Ok, first thing's first.” She says. “Wendy, while they're fixing your strikers, you're going to be in a pair of tomcats. You ok with those?”

Wendy nods. “O-of course. I might need some refresher training.” She says.

“Fine, I'll work on it with Slider. Frank, next up is you.” Ice says, sliding a packet of papers across the desk at you. “The matrons have selected a group of first round aggressors they want you to fly against, your pick. Those are their files. Well, the pertinent parts, they didn't want to release anything else to you.”

“Your first hop is tomorrow, they want to do one morning and one afternoon sortie.” She says. “Possibly a nightfight or three later on.” Right now, though, they want to do one a day, which will give them plenty of time to poke and prod and look for residuals.”

The files are all stamped with their respective air forces and the witch's names, and each has a small photo and a couple sheets of information attached. One Italian air force, one German, Katya, and-

“Slider's an aggressor?” You ask.

Ice shrugs. “They originally wanted to use nothing but us the first week, kind of surprised they changed it. Maybe they watched us over France and changed their minds.”

[x] The luftwaffle? Well, they're usually pretty competent, let's read about her.

You take the manilla folder stamped with the insignia of the Luftwaffe, opening it up to-

“Oh hell, really? They sent her?” You moan, looking at the picture of a witch nonchalantly popping bubblegum right at the instant the picture was taken. Kathrine Young.

“You know her?” Ice asks, reaching for the folder.

You nod. “Yeah, she was at Strana Mechty. They shuffled her off to Dunottar when we got back, they must have sent her home pretty quickly after that.”

She nods, handing the folder back to you. “Entirely possible.”

Kathrine Young, Hauptmann, Luftewaffe. Turns out she's the youngest daughter of Minna-Dietlinde Wilcke, a wartime ace and-

“Hey Ice. Says her her mom was-” You say, and Ice cuts you off.

“Commanding officer of the Five oh one. I know, Frank.” She says. “She's kind of a big deal.”

You shrug- historically the 501st was important for a lot of reasons, but you tended to study the Pacific theater more, having more personal connection to it.

1/2
>>
>>31856511
can you copy paste it into a pastebin?
>>
“She's a Nightwitch?” You ask. “They said she had a lot of mechanical talent when we were in Russia.”

“Her father was... interesting.” Ice says, struggling for the right word. “And she may have inherited that. Or part of it, anyway. She's already been noted for her ability to bring back strikers that have been shot up beyond all hope of flying, though that won't matter much here. She's actually very high up the list in terms of talent, there's a lot of people jealous of her and her sisters.”

“So why's she only a captain?” You ask. “Er, Hauptmann or whatever.”

“She's been busted in rank three times.” Ice responds. “Not sure why, the records on the events were sealed by order of the court martial that busted her. She's been grounded once, too.”

“Damn. That's almost impressive.” You say, flipping back through the notes.

Ice looks at you. “She's also like second or third overall scoring ace in NATO right now.” She says. “So she's got a better score than either you or me.”

Also, this reminds me to get working on that fic I've been procrastinating on for like months because I'm such a lazy fuck.

Consider it the official textbook version, with enough thickly applied whitewashing to smooth over things for current allies until which time after Martian War II: Sparkly Boogaloo can uncover the much messier real turn of events.

A) Bombarding the IJA HQ should have led to a fucking civil war, aliums or not.

B) Yamamoto was a sperging retard that headed the faction of the Japanese Navy that wanted to get into war with the US. That fucker is largely responsible for Pearl Harbor.

C) The IJA most certainly did not want to get into a punchup with the US because so many of their assets were occupied in China, they weren't an obstacle to an alliance with the US like the document says they were, and in fact would have likely reluctantly supported it because of how thinly spread they were.
>>
>>31857044

Weren't the Japanese Army a lot more conservative, and for that matter, basically rogue?
>>
>>31857143

The Japanese Army was a crazy war crimes machine that deserved everything coming to this, that doesn't mean that they were so devoid of sense that they believed they could sustain a war with the US while they were fighting in China. The Japanese Navy is more or less responsible for Pearl Habor, and both organisations did their part to destroy the civilian government while assassinating officers of both sides.

[x] We both know that's just because we've been stuck in quiet areas. Alright, line it up, let's see how good she really is.

You snort. “We both know that's just because we've been stuck in quiet areas.” You say, closing the folder. “Alright, line it up, let's see how good she really is.”

Ice nods, taking the folder and putting the rest on a shelf. “These are all the aggressor witches, if you want read through them. We're probably going to have to do this every week, except for a few cases.”

“Awful lot of leeway.” You note, standing up- Merlin having long since relocated to a chair of her own.

Ice shrugs. “If we were training, yeah. But we're not, this is something else. Once your flight against her is done, you'll have to select from the remaining three, once they're all done, we'll repeat the process. You'll probably be flying against some witches two or three times.”

“Sounds easy enough.” You say. “Speaking of witches, where are they all?”

“We were in a briefing, actually.” Slider says, walking into the office like she owns the place, as usual.

She looks over at Wendy before looking at Ice. “How was the vacation?”

“Grandma left me a rifle.” Ice responds. “It'll take a chunk out of battleship armor that's about the size of your head.”

“She-” Slider pauses, then turns, slowly, to look at you. “Somehow,” She says, her voice low and dangerous. “Somehow I get the impression that relaxing wasn't at all what happened in London.”

The Japanese military basically ran the country at least partially because of a part of the Meiji constitution that required an Army and Navy minister in the cabinet. If either resigned, bam you need a new government! So, eventually, the civvies just gave up and basically let the military run shit. As for the IJA, they went "rogue" in Manchuria and arguably in '37 when the 2nd Sino-Jap war started, but although the government was OFFICIALLY against it, they basically accepted it as a fait accompli.

Because of this, the Army started getting mad resources to fight its war in China (and occasionally against the Red Army), and the navy got buttmad that they were losing money and prestige. Sailing to the rescue comes the faction that says "you know what...fuck the US...just...fuck em", which was (IIRC quite reluctantly) helmed by Yamamoto, as he was head of the Combined Fleet (the seagoing battle line, and therefore the power projection). The ORIGINAL plan was to have invaded the Philippines and let the USN battlewagons sail across the Pacific while getting whittled down by IJN night attacks and air attacks (this is why the IJN had such good torpedoes, torpedo delivery systems, and night attack doctrine). Then, the reduced USN battle line would've fought the IJN line somewhere around...the Marianas or something. Yamamoto said "fuck that I got carriers" and bombed Pearl Harbor.

Funnily enough, if the Japs had gone with their initial plan, the USN would've played right into their hands...

Hell no.

Why did you think I mentioned historical whitewashing? No, that's just post-war mythology. He planned it, executed it, and made sure it happened in the first place. The not crazy guy was his superior Nagano, who unfortunately was not able to reign in his crazy subordinate.

>>31857380

Yamamoto was completely supportive.

>"Nagano had eventually lost the debate, even though his basic reasoning was sound. Yamamoto had won on the basis of his personal reputation, and his willingness to use inelegant means to get his way. In the midst of the Pearl Harbor debate he had let it be known that he and the entire staff of Combined Fleet were prepared to resign if their views were not confirmed. Nagano, given the choice between acquiescing or confronting his wayward subordinate, had backed down."

IIRC that quote was about the actual method for attacking the USN, wasn't it? I know that he had a lot of resistance from the gun club to his actual method of attack.

Wait no, sorry, that wasn't the full quote.
"As war approached, Yamamoto laid the groundwork for what was in effect a coup against Imperial General Headquarters (IGHQ) over who was to set strategic direction for the fleet. In so doing, he sowed the seeds of future military defeat by destroying the checks and balances within the Navy's policymaking process.

Yamamoto had insisted in 1941 that if Japan chose to capture the resources of the south through war, that war also had to include the United States. Furthermore, he believed that the US Navy had to be dealt a crippling blow at the outset so as to buy time for Japan to carry out its operations in the southern campaign areas without opposition. In this view he was opposed by several senior members of of the Naval General Staff, including its head, Admiral Nagano Osami. Nagano was of the opinion that the United States would find it very difficult to go to war if Japan refrained from outright attack. He reasoned (correctly) that President Franklin D. Roosevelt would have a difficult time rallying sufficient support for a causus belli based only on Japanese attacks against British and Dutch colonial holdings, as American popular opinion was decidedly ambivalent about defending such interests.

And of course, it's not Nagano's fault that he and his compatriots were the only sane ones there.

>>31857609
In their meager defense, they'd watch the US slip closer and closer to undeclared war in Europe (and somewhat in the Pacific what with the embargoes). Although that final hurdle (congress) would've been difficult to clear without an actual attack, the IJN had constantly felt threatened by the USN sitting in Hawaii and whatever residual forces were in the Asiatic fleet. The Japanese military was a paranoid, bureaucratic hell

>Japanese were never a Great Power
After the USN and RN, the IJN was the most powerful navy on earth in 1941.
>no real way of bringing war to the US or even winning
That's the thing. Japanese doctrine NEVER sought a total victory. They knew they could never win that kind of war. They wanted to win a negotiated peace as they had done in 1897 and 1904-05. Hit so hard that the other guy throws in the towel. They misjudged the fury of an American populace who interpreted Pearl Harbor as a sucker punch of the absolute worst sort

[x] Slider, you're being rude. Can we at least introduce you to Wendy?

“Slider.” You say, flatly. “first, you can't talk to me like that anymore, I'm nobility. Second, you're being rude, You haven't even been introduced to Wendy yet.”

“You're- wait, what?” Slider asks, the storm gathering in her eyes pausing, at least.

“Slider, this is Flight Lieutenant Wendy Maloney, RAF. Wendy, this is our squadron Exec, Lieutenant Commander Rachel Kerner, callsign Slider.” You say, standing up. Wendy pops to attention and fires off a perfect salute, that Slider bemusedly returns.

“These two did a terrible job at getting you briefed in on squadron culture if you're saluting me here.” Slider says, amused. “We save that shit for the parade ground and award ceremonies.”

“Well, Raich, since you seem to think so, you can show her around and get her introduced.” Ice says, a smile on her face.

“Not yet I can't.” Slider responds, turning back to face Ice. “So, how'd this dipshit turn out to be nobility?”

“He got knighted by the matron of London.” Ice responds, somewhat primly. “He's also a guardian of witches, now. The British coven published it.”

Slider's eyes narrow. “You think that cunt at Annapolis is going to recognize it?” She asks.

Ice nods. “What choice does she have? Just like recognizing I'm Imperial royalty.”

“Does that mean I'm underdressed?” Slider asks, indicating her BDU top and combat boots. “Maybe I should go put on pants.”

“This all sounds like it was an awful lot of work.” Slider continues, looking back at you.

“Actually, it was very relaxing.” Ice says, covering. “Frank did most of the lifting, I mostly spent time reading or watching TV in my rooms at St. John's lodge.”

“Your- you stayed at the lodge?” Slider asks.

1/3
>>
“In my rooms there, yes.” Ice responds. “I've got a permanent holding there.”

“Impressive. We'll deal with them later.” Slider says, half-turning back to Wendy. “I take it you're related to that Maloney?”

“Y-yes...” Wendy answers, quietly.

“That'd explain the bitch that dropped off your strikers.” Slider says, heat returning to her voice. “I was tempted to bust her damn lip. Mouthing off like that, then dropping those strikers on us. You know the bitches gutted the damn things?”

“Yeah, we've got Kenji and Merlin on it.” You say, looking over at Merlin, who's leafing through Kathrine's dossier.

“Oh good. I'm sure they'll build some star wars shit out of it.” Slider huffs. “Speaking of shit, Fighter fuel is way critical. I've sent the twins to Wattisham until the new tanks get installed and filled. Even then, I'm thinking at best we've got enough there for a week with two flights a day with both fighters. If they'd drop their fucking idiotic chase plane idea we'd be able to squeak more out of it, but they're fixated on having as many cameras as they can get.”

Ice nods. “I'd figured as much. Who else is on camera duty?”

“They pulled Powers back, she'll be providing the high altitude realtime feed, they've got some monster video camera for her. There's the twins, and then at least two witches not running aggressor duty are supposed to fly with camera packs on their wingtip points.” Slider says. “It's fucking stupid.”

“It's necessary.” Ice responds.

2/3
>>
“Whatever. We've also got a team from the SEALs here.” Slider says, still venting. “Two of them are in their strikers at all times for fuck's sake. It'd be funny, but they're damn serious about some security threat here.”

“They're specfor witches.” Ice calmly replies. “They're always like that.”

“Not always, and don't try and give me that bullshit.” Slider says. “There's a team from the Army on the way up too, they got rammed through by orders from Nixon that were signed off on by some witch at the pentagon with enough rank for the brits to take notice. They'll be here sometime tomorrow, probably.”

“Army witches aren't so bad.” Ice says, still trying to calm her friend down.

“I didn't say a damn thing about witches,” Slider fires back. “They'll be supplementing the SEALs.”

Merlin, engrossed in the dossier, actually breaks Slider's concentration before she can really get going. Her stomach emits a series of gugrling squeals loud enough to be heard even over you exec's voice, and everything in the room stops, with all eyes turning towards your RIO, who's blushing noticably.

“I think it's time for chow.” Slider supplies, and Merlin nods.

You can't say you disagree at all.

Question for Ghost; when are we getting that time off with Katya? Because its been delayed to hell and back with no word about it for fuckloads of threads now.
>>
And that's it for the night!

I was considering a timeskip into combat, but I'd really like to focus a bit on the testing, so I'm hoping to be able to devote at least a thread to the highlight sorties. we'll skip some for sure, but these first four I'd really like to devote at least the majority of a thread each on.

Past that, IDK. I'd have jumped in on the WW2 discussion, being that the subject is one I find really interesting (The IJN, in particular, they go from being a feudal backwater to a major world power in like, forty years. that's pretty damn impressive, i think.) but I don't know nearly enough to be pertinent in a conversation about them. Sorry about that, i guess, and I'll try and do more reading for next time, haha.

Anyway guys, sorry to have had to postpone, we should be good to go back to Tuesday next week, so I feel safe in saying we'll be back at our usual time next week! till then gents, cheers!

Long update tonight!

The Third Battle for Tanana, as it was already being called, was well under way. Everyone in the strike package could see it in the distance, though nobody could tell who was winning. Reports were... inconclusive at best. The most positive news, according to their AWACS, was that aside from a gaggle of Soviet CAS making life miserable for the 2nd Heavy Brigade Combat Team, air presence was surprisingly light. For the moment.

"Three minutes," Holly MacLeod said over the radio, triple-checking her wrist mounted MFD. Forty-seven mics clicked in response. Another shaky sigh. Three minutes to the front line, three more minutes of worry and dread.

The long, silent flight from Elemdorf to the front had given her too much time to think.

At some point, she had started to believe that she'd grown accustomed to war. Accustomed to the fact that she and her fellow witches would be throwing themselves into danger. That they'd be responsible for saving and taking lives. That she bore ultimate responsibility over the lives of her witches. Combat had become exactly as Chris had described it: another day at the office.

Today was different.

She kept hearing Will's plea to come back to him. She could remember how comfortable she felt pressed against him as her strikers spun up beneath them, how tightly they'd held onto one another. She could see his grin as he stepped down from the stand, and a chill that wasn't the Alaskan morning air ran through Holly's body. She wished she hadn't needed to leave the poncho behind, but comfort meant nothing compared to easy access to spare magazines and her pistols, if it came down to it.

She'd have felt better taking up something of his with her for this.

'Damnit.'
>>
>>31858635
Shaking her head, Holly scanned the sky around her. Grenadine's witches were scattered amongst Colonel Wolcott's F-16Cs, three thousand feet below Holly's Mudhens. At the flanks of the main formation were the interceptors: USAF F-15s and F-4s. The Canadian Arrows seemed to be lagging behind.

She found the rest of her witches easily enough: everyone was still in their positions, as they'd been twenty minutes ago when she'd done the same thing; as they'd been ten minutes ago, when she'd done it again.

"I'm here, Holly," Chris said, drifting close enough to place a reassuring hand on her friend's shoulder. "We're all still here."

"I know."

"Ya just looked like you needed the reminder." She flashed Holly a smile that did not reach her eyes. "So, what movie are ya gonna see with Will tonight?"

"The Last Dragon. You're totally invited, of course."

"Nah. Not unless he's got that twin brother I keep hoping you tell me he has."

"I'll ask him for you, I promise," Holly snickered.

"I know you don't break those... usually."

"Usually." Holly sighed, taking another look at her MFD. "One minute."

"One minute," Chris repeated. She gave Holly's shoulder a squeeze before pulling away.

The strike package descended below the patchwork clouds towards its assigned sector.

-

Holly wondered if the Russians, with their backs to Tanana and the river Yukon, also called it the Tanana Pocket.

The push to the north had apparently stalled under heavy air attack from Russian SU-25s. The one good thing about this was that their presence over the battlefield was making their AA crews more cautious, not wanting to shoot down their own close-air.

She could feel her heart racing faster as rapid explosions snapped across the ground. Even from so many miles out, she could see tanks, Russian and American, detonating as thin wisps of ATGMs snaked out from both lines to touch them.

I'm just pissed that we planned it and everything, then promptly ignored it ran away from it and now we won't be able to do it for a million fucking threads because THE RUSSIANS ARE ATTACKING like every fucking single time we try to spend time with her.

>>
>>31858695
Glad to finally hear news on that one way or another, because your last post pretty heavily implied that.
>>
>>31858687
Tracers could still be made out even as the sun began to creep slightly over the horizon, arcing towards CAS birds on both sides. An A-10 dove on a row of Russian IFV, pouring a torrent of fire from its nose as it walked tracers across the vehicles. A moment later, she spotted another A-10 that seemed to stagger in mid-air, trailing thick black smoke and a cloud of flares as it turned hard towards the south and fled as fast as it could away from the action.

In the near distance, a pair of SU-25s started to claw for altitude and distance, realizing too late that they suddenly were in the wrong part of town, with dozens of witches converging on them. One disintegrated when an AAMRAAM found it, two other missiles passing into the expanding debris cloud and detonating moments later. The other managed to defeat the missiles; an F-15 on full afterburner swept over Holly in pursuit.

"ASSHOLE!" Chris shouted, fighting the sudden turbulence. "WATCH WHERE THE HELL YOU'RE FLYING!"

A minute later, it was over. The Frogfoot simply didn't stand a chance, the Eagle casually sliding into position in the lethal cone. After ripping a burst of tracers across the fuselage of the Russian jet, the Eagle peeled away, rolling in victory as the Sukhoi burst into flames, its pilot ejecting almost immediately. In the next minute, the Soviets lost six more 25's, hunted down by packs of witches or sniped out of the air by USAF steelwings. Holly and Chris had managed to claim a Frogfoot between their guns.

"Eagle, we're starting our run now," Grenadine spoke tersely, diving ahead of Colonel Wolcott's F-16s.

"Roger that, we're still with you." The shakes were coming back, Holly could feel it in her voice. Without any fighters to hunt down, her witches had been reduced to extra targets for the Reds on the ground to shoot at.

Tracers from radar-tracked guns sailed at Holly and her squadrons now, at least a dozen missile joining the barrage.

>>31858737
The SEAD witches out in front responded with their own rifles, the Weasels with missiles. Four rounds splashed off of Holly's barrier, and in that instant, any fear she felt transformed into fury. Some asshole on the ground thought they'd get lucky just strafing their gun across her formation. She could hear gasps of surprise over the radio from the rest of her witches, all struggling to hold off or evade the haphazard incoming fire, and she could feel her teeth grinding together so hard that it hurt.

"PUSH THROUGH IT!" Holly shot ahead of the rest of her squadron, roaring along with the engines of her strikers. The rest of her girls matched the war cry, and she felt the now-familiar rush of adrenaline in her veins. She could feel the skin on her face sagging as she rolled around another burst, catching more tracers with her shield, and wondered when the other shoe was going to-

"Package Q, ARKHAM. Be advised: we confirm inbound contacts north, its a heavy group coming in hot! Count's at forty plus steelwings. Forward observers are calling Fulcrums and Flankers in the group..."

'And there it is.'

"ARKHAM, Siren 1-1 copies all," Holly grunted back at the AWACS, pushing through another turn, looking around herself wildly trying to find – there she was: Chris had stuck with her through the maneuvers. Squinting into the distance, Holly could make out the oncoming swarm of tiny dots to the north, and felt something cold in the pit of her stomach.

She knew she could beat a Flanker. She'd done it before, seven of her kills were Flankers.

She just kept seeing the one that she almost couldn't beat.

"Grenadine, you've got to-"

"We heard, little busy!"

The Wild Weasels continued to reap their harvest, the sky growing calmer with every pop in the distance. She watched as the F-16's bore in on their targets, Grenadine's witches holding positions in front of them, shields flaring as they stopped incoming rounds.

Holly bought herself more altitude, trying to get away from the persistent AA guns. Falling back towards friendlier territory, she ordered her squadron leaders to reform with the Mudhens and standby. Within minutes, the entire wing had spread itself out, a vast net waiting to catch the Soviets... once they decided to get close enough. F-15s and F-16s mingled amongst the witches, while the F-4s and the Arrows hung further back.

"Deep breath..." Holly whispered to herself, flicking her off M-16's safety.

-

Holly didn't hate steelwings. She feared some of them, especially scary space-age looking things like the Wyvern, but she didn't hate them as a concept. Hell, it was awesome to have them for backup.

She definitely hated fighting them.

Until the enemy got closer, most witches had little else they could do than evade any missiles that managed to track them instead of the steelwings they escorted, or try to shoot down the missiles themselves. Radar-guided weapons typically didn't have much luck against witches, but anything IR guided was worthy of concern. If she didn't know better, she'd have sworn that some bastard of an engineer had designed the R-27T specifically to deal with witches from afar.

Her MFD pinged insistently through her headset; the Russians had gone active with their radars in search of targets.

Trails from missiles streaked away from friendly steelwings, snaking across the sky at the dots miles and miles away. Seconds later, explosions rippled amongst the dots, some falling out of the sky, most continuing onward.

The Soviet response was felt almost simultaneously. An F-15 to Holly's right started breaking away from the group, trailing clouds of chaff just as a missile struck it dead on the nose. The entire front half of the jet crumpled in on itself, rapid pops filling the air as the metal corpse sank towards the ground, cannon rounds cooking off inside of what remained of the airframe.

Not far from it, an F-4 was ripped wide open, losing its left wing and much of its fuselage. One ejection seat shot out from the stricken craft just before the spiralling wreckage ripped itself apart. No parachute.

Holly caught a glimpse of Chris' staring at what remained of the Phantom raining down towards the ground, eyes wide and mouthing a silent prayer.

Holly kept one eye on her MFD as she lead half of her wing into the target area, waiting for the Soviet steelwings to get into range. More missiles arced past her into the distance towards the contacts, and it struck her just how true the reports of dwindling ammunition stocks were coming out of Europe. Another cluster of detonations blinked among the oncoming Russians, much closer now. In exchange another F-15 was cut in half, two Arrows joining it.

'Come on, come on!'

She was able to make out distinct shapes among the oncoming Soviets now, and started angling herself towards a Fulcrum. Some of the Mudhens were already firing, picking off incoming missiles.

"Whose airspace is this again, Eagle?" Chris asked, a snarl in her voice.

"I think it's ours, Watchdog."

"Let's remind them of that."

-

Physics ordained that the Fulcrum would lose less than a minute into its duel with Holly.

The Fulcrum pilot was aggressive, firing two Apex missiles as he closed in, firing his gun in controlled bursts trying to keep Holly concentrating on defense in the hopes that his missiles would get through to finish her off.

To Holly, all of this seemed so terribly slow, if just for a moment. Heightened reflexes wasn't a particularly special talent among witches, but she knew how to leverage it better than most of the girls in her squadron. To the pilot, the blue aura around his witch opponent seemed to intensify for a brief instant, and suddenly his missiles detonated far short of their target.

The witch weaved through his tracers, with each movement punctuated by a blue burst of light to her left or right. She continued boring straight at him until she suddenly climbed to his 12 o'clock high, well out of position for him to follow without losing too much airspeed.

He clearly knew that he could not beat the witch in a turning fight, so he opted for speed. Even from as far as she was when she dropped into position behind him, Holly could feel the residual heat from his engines as the fighter accelerated.

She watched the airframe shudder from the abuse being piled on it, watched its flaps and ailerons strain to whip the craft around and over her shots. She watched the pilot crane his neck in a desperate effort to keep her in his sights. He wrangled his MiG-29 around the sky as good as any Fulcrum pilot Holly had encountered over Alaska. Better than the six on her list of kills. But even so, she stuck with him through the best he could offer.

Holly chased down her prey as they rolled through the sky together, taking the occasional potshot with her M-16. Only once did he force her to overshoot, trying to score a snapshot with his cannon, but she denied him the shot, firing behind herself and forcing the jet to turn away from her or take a hit. She kicked her strikers forward, glowing bright with magic as she abruptly shifted direction once more, looping back over the stunned pilot's field of view and returning to his tail.

She could see the Fulcrum's wings starting to bend, even as the Soviet forced the fighter through another hard right. He was headed north, trying to find some more speed and altitude, or trying to disengage.

'Rifle up, aim, calm down-'

She fired six shots, stitching rounds across his starboard engine. It was as if a child had taken a swing at a plastic model with a baseball bat. Secondaries took out the rear half of the MiG, the rest tumbling towards the earth. She found herself holding her breath-

-and releasing it when she spotted an ejection seat pop out from the from the fighter, the chute successfully deploying a moment later.

"HOLLY, YOUR FIVE-" Chris screamed, her voice cut off by static.

Gasping with surprise, Holly 'pushed' herself to the left with rapid concentrated magic bursts, 23mm cannon fire splashing off her shield. Rolling over, she dropped herself like stone towards the ground, looking past her legs to find the threat.

'Next customer, MiG-21-'

It occurred to her that this Fishbed driver had likely been coming to aid the Fulcrum she'd just downed. He was just as ballsy as his buddy, diving right after her, gun still chattering away. Boosting and rolling around the incoming fire, she sent back several bursts of own, draining the rest of her magazine. As she pulled out of her crash dive, the MiG fell past her, trailing flames and pieces of itself. No ejection seat this time.

"GODDAMNIT EAGLE!" Chris roared. "It's a lot fucking harder to cover you when you dive right in like that!"

"Loading," Holly responded, feeling strangely relaxed as she reached for a fresh magazine. "Sorry." They were now back to back, climbing out of the main furball and searching for more targets.

"Don't you 'sorry' me!" Chris snapped. "I'm not telling you to slow down for me, I'm just saying-"

Holly stayed quiet, Chris' advice fading into the background as she concentrated on the fight below. Missiles had cut the Russian's numbers down by quite a bit, but otherwise the fight was fairly even from what she could see. According to the main 'net, the 3rd Wing was already claiming at least fifteen kills, seven more friendly steelwings joining their Russian counterparts in exchange. The air was thick with smoke, flares, and contrails.

It was easy to find witches: they were the ones whose trails wouldn't have made any sense for a steelwing to make.

One of those wild tracks in the sky was being followed by a steelwing almost perfectly.

"Grenadine's in trouble!" Holly suddenly cried out, pointing herself towards towards a distant series of explosions and rocketing off before Chris could protest.

-

Holly had grown up being trained as a combat witch. The one thing she had drilled into her head that if a witch simply applied their natural talents and maximized the potential of their strikers, no steelwing could ever touch them of their own volition. On reflection, it was a silly lesson to have been taught.

The Flanker-C, as it was being called, had been making waves since its surprise appearance over Alaska. Intelligence had suggested that the monster steelwing was still in testing. They'd not been seen in any frontline-ready unit before the war. Initial encounters that had sent some witches packing—and one back home to never to fly again—should never have happened, because the plane was supposed to be numbering in the single digits on some test site deep inside Russia.

Grenadine wasn't helpless in a dogfight because of her role as a SEAD witch: far from it. To Holly, Grenadine was one of the best witches in the sky right now, and she was being beaten handily. Her right striker trailed smoke, evidence of near misses gouged along its length. Her desperate snap rolls were sluggish, her flying resembling a steelwing more than a witch.

By the time Holly arrived to assist, she was close enough to watch in horror as another short burst from the Flanker's cannon finally cracked Grenadine's shield. The sudden explosion from the shattered magic barrier sent her tumbling helplessly towards the tundra below.

Holly screamed, levelling her rifle at the Soviet machine and firing even as its engine nozzles twisted, sending the fighter in a controlled lateral spiral around her initial burst before they opened wide and shoved the Flanker-C towards the ground below, diving towards the falling witch.

"WATCHDOG, GET HER OUTTA THERE!"
>>

Me too. Urban combat with just a pistol and Russian witches!
>>
>>31858999
Oh I will.
>>31859005
I will not believe it until it happens.

Also considering that Kostantina did not have a chance with Frank like how she envisioned when she probably signed up for this mission only to end up having him leave with Ice. Now he'll be busy with fighting witches 'unworthy' of his attention and even after that will go on a date with Katya.

not to mention if Hornet's scenes are canon views Katya as probably 'dangerous' if left alone with Frank.

Due to neglect and having her 'enemy' with her beloved I think our crazy little russain will do something drastic.
>>
>>31859071
"I'M ON IT, HE'S YOURS!" Chris dove after Grenadine without hesitation. The Flanker seemed to understand that it now had a brand new pursuer focused entirely on it and snaked its way out of the dive, evading another burst of fire from Holly as it found a new vector to the west.

Radio chatter exploded in Holly's ears. Distantly, she could hear Grenadine's frantic wingwitch begging for her last known location. Chris trying to reassure her that Gilly was fine, just shaken up. An F-15 pilot called for Holly to break off so he could take a shot.

It was a familiar dance, the Flanker-C in the lead, weaving across the sky, keeping as narrow a profile as possible to Holly. Its pilot knew that range was his ally; even with a witch's ability to enhance every shot she fired, her bullets could only travel so fast. He was fast enough that even with his maneuvering, he was outpacing Holly, pulling farther and farther ahead. She cursed her limitations even as she felt her strikers shudder from the demands being placed on them-

And then the Flanker-C was inverted, looking her in the eyes and firing two Vympels.

Instinct took over. The first missile she caught within seconds of actually seeing it, killing it just as her magazine ran dry. Letting the rifle hang by its sling, she drew her first sidearm, the M92SB, and emptied it at the second missile as it drew within a thousand feet of her, the flash from its detonation obscuring the now-oncoming Flanker. Her shield came up by reflex, debris pinging off of it as she slowed herself to a halt. A second later the shield was torn apart as 30mm rounds exploded across it, and the whole world rolled around her as she found herself falling and out of control.

'Ohmigod-'

The pistol was ripped away from her, and she flailed at it uselessly, the weapon just out of reach.

Her HUD goggles blinked five different warnings regarding her strikers as she fought to right herself in the air, using more magic bursts to turn her fall into a controlled dive. Her hands trembled as she fished a fresh magazine for the '16, slamming it home almost too fast, almost dropping the rifle as she checked it for damage, miraculously finding none.

"Come on, come on, COME ON!" She shouted at the Flanker-C, rolling over to find it diving at her. It shouted back with another deluge of 30mm, passing through where she'd been a moment before. She kept herself as mobile as possible, emptying another magazine at the fighter as it swept past her. The turbulence from the passing Flanker caused her to drop a magazine as she tried to reload.

'Damnit!'

By the time she managed to reload and right herself to pursue, the Flanker-C was already 'skidding' across the sky, trying to bring its nose around for another cannon pass. Holly went full afterburner, trying to stay ahead of its turn and frantically loading a grenade into her rifle's under-slung launcher. She could hear the basso thrum of the 30mm spitting more rounds at her.

Holly spun to face the pursuing fighter, cutting all power to her strikers. As she fell, she cut loose with her grenade launcher... and was off by a good two hundred feet. Somersaulting towards the ground, she jinked back and forth rapidly, hoping to throw off the Flanker-C, knowing it was still coming for her.

Every burst of magic she used to stay ahead of the Flanker's guns made her feel heavier. Her breaths were short, ragged. She felt like she couldn't get enough air in her lungs.

She was losing.

"Chris?" She asked, desperation starting to bleed into her voice. "Hey girl, I need you right about now-"

"Engaged with his buddy," Chris growled, clearly straining herself in her own duel, too far away for either woman's liking. "Hang in there, I'll come for you, okay?"

"I know you will."

I don't understand the logic behind putting Dazzle camo on a jet...it was originally to break up the silhouette of a ship or give false bearing and speed readings

True but back then she thought herself 'superior' to the harlots in Frank's wing.

But considering having gone on vacation with Ice learning the 'supposed' women after Frank, Slider being Slider, and Katya being 'waifu material' according to the sharks and being elegant in general.

Her confidence is shaken and seeing Katya again the great singer, elegance, etc. Knows that if she stays idle any longer she will love her beloved.

I will wait warmly for her stowaway adventures

its to break up and disorient at close range when knife fighting, it disturbs perspective and makes calculating distance correctly harder than normal

its solely intended for close range dogfighting and its effective at that
>>
>>31859228
The joke now is that I won't write stowaway adventures, for reasons
>>

It was a promise she couldn't keep, and they both knew that.

'I asked for this, didn't I?'

Putting everything she could muster into her strikers, Holly rocketed towards the still rising sun, unable to see anything and hoping that the Sukhoi pilot felt the same.

"EAGLE JINK RIGHT JINK RIGHT!"

The next magic burst almost caused Holly to black out, a burning sensation from a near miss along her left arm keeping her awake. Whirling on the Flanker-C, she watched incredulously as the big fighter pointed itself away from her, two witches in pursuit, its belly exposed to her.

She missed half of the rounds she fired, already hearing Chris in her mind ranting at her for not taking drum magazines of some kind. What mattered though, was that half of the rounds didn't miss.

One engine trailed a streak of dirty flame, the other chugging smoke. The Flanker-C shuddered under the bombardment as it tried to peel away. The two witches in pursuit added their own fire to the mix, shredding the tail of the fighter it fought through its turn. Lacking both vertical stabilizers, the Soviet jet began a slow, lazy spiral towards the ground.

The Colt Python was in Holly's hands now, rifle dangling from her shoulder as she followed the Flanker down. Each shot she fired tore basketball sized holes clean through the air frame.

Somehow, it wasn't enough. Nothing could be.

Re-holstering the revolver, she slapped another magazine into the rifle, a strangled war cry tearing from her throat as she took aim at the stricken jet-

Arms wrapped around Holly, pulling her away from the dying fighter as massive fragments tore themselves free of it. A shield that wasn't hers blocked the worst of it. A hand clamped down onto her rifle, trying to force Holly to lower it.

"You got 'em, Eagle," Chris cried into her ear. "Stand down, stand down!"

How about abductions and car chases?
>>
>>31859287
I just think it'd be funny if Konstantina forced her way onto the trip, and Frank had to try to keep both of the girls happy and away from each others' throats

THE MOST DANGEROUS GAME

Slowly, Holly relaxed her grip on the rifle, moved her finger to the trigger guard, and did her best to relax as she slowly descended into a hover.

She'd won. Barely.

"Chris, I'm-" Still shaking from adrenaline, Holly scanned her surroundings, her head jerking back and forth rapidly in search of more threats. She saw Grenadine and another witch circling around her and Chris with their weapons at the ready, all but daring for a Soviet to try their luck.

"Good shooting, Colonel," Grenadine said, flashing Holly a grin before she turned her attention back to the sky around her.

"Team effort," Holly managed, still trying to catch her breath. "That was you back there?"

"Yeah, me and Buzz Buzz. Just returning the favor," Grenadine continued. "Josie and Wolcott say hello as well. We're all still here because of you."

"Won't catch me stopping you trying to compliment me."

"Can you keep going, ma'am?"

"I'm good to go-"

"Are you sure?"

"No choice, is there?"

"Look at you. God, l-look at you." Chris sniffled, giving Holly a powerful squeeze before letting her go. Chris looked almost as roughed up as Holly felt, but she was obviously more concerned for Holly. "I'm sorry, I should have-" she shook her head. "After I caught up with Grenadine, we got jumped by another Flanker. He forced me to overshoot, put me on the defensive, and then you called in and I- I really lost it. Shouted for Grenadine to go to you, went cyclic and pumped a whole box at the bastard. No way anyone could dodge all that. Had to change out the barrel afterwards... I mean it was worth it but I was late getting to you, and-"

"I know you did what you could." Holly shuddered at a sudden, terrible thought. 'No,' she told herself. 'Don't think about that right now.'

"I was still out of gun range by the time Grenadine got to you with some help, I thought I was about to watch you-"
>>
>>31859243
Ah, no stowaways....but what will happen?
>>
>>31859319
"It could have been worse." Holly said, and the conversation was over. Chris probably had a lot more to say, but for now they were satisfied that things hadn't ended for the worst.

And that was all that really mattered.

-

Personal drama aside, the air battle was winding down almost as quickly as it had started. Individual dogfights were winding down at the edges of the 'killbox', either when the Russian broke off to make a run to the southwest, or when they were torn apart by their USAF counterparts or roaming groups of very angry witches.

The steelwings had taken a vicious beating, but all accounts suggested that it had been returned with interest. Checking her MFD, Holly found just over half of their IFFs still transmitting. Holly couldn't find a single Phantom in the sky, the Arrows whittled down to a mere five.

But the airspace was theirs for the moment.

'Hooray.'

The battle on the ground seemed to be progressing in favor of the Army. The few steelwings that remained on station contributed several gun runs despite their current ammo and fuel situation, while the witches remained on top cover, waiting for an enemy that apparently had enough for one day.

The quartet made their way in a southerly direction, looking for trouble and thankfully finding none. They began to recount the battle from their own perspective. Chris talked about saving an F-16 from a trio of persistent MiG-21s as she tried to reach Holly. Grenadine spent most of her story time thanking Holly repeatedly for peeling the Flanker off her ass. The fourth witch, Major Callie "Buzz Buzz" Vespa, growled angrily about having to shoot down her own Stinger missile after it locked onto a friendly steelwing. Nobody bragged about their exploits. They were all just relieved to even be able to talk about them.
>>

Holly wished she could have somehow recorded Chris' face as she recounted the relatively easy duels she'd won, followed by the desperate struggle against the Flanker-C. She never liked making her friend worry, but McPherson was honestly the most expressive individual she knew. In the space of a couple minutes, she managed to go from being impressed, to horrified, to furious. She clearly had a lot more to say, but kept her mouth shut.

"Had us worried there," Grenadine jerked a thumb over to the tall and slender Buzz Buzz next to her. "Ran into this loser here while I was on my way to help you."

"That went bad really fast," Callie said quietly, taking up position on Holly's left. "You're still using too much magic for your course corrections. You really shouldn't even be trying to use my technique, especially in combat."

"First time for everything..."

"Here." Buzz Buzz offered up a juice packet. Holly snatched it out of her hand, saying a quick thanks and downing the whole thing in one long pull. Reaching into her own vest, Holly pulled out a second juice packet and drained it. Buzz Buzz caught the packets as Holly tried to throw them away.

"No littering, dumbass." The waspwitch placed one hand on her hip, the other wagging an admonishing finger, a motion matched by the wasp antennae sprouting from her head.

"Screw you, Little Bee," Holly breathed, trying to smile for her rescuers. She didn't feel as drained as before, but she was sore all over. With some disappointment, she noted that her BDU coat was definitely ruined.

"My familiar's a wasp!" Buzz Buzz shouted.

"Whatever you say, Callie..." Holly managed to grin. "Hard to believe we beat 'em back."

"I think you and Chris just killed their talent, that might have something to do with it." Grenadine gave Holly a punch to the shoulder; she winced."The withdrawal was disorganized as all hell, some ran north, but a lot of 'em headed southwest. Steelwings are trying to pop 'em with missiles-"
>>
>>31859409
In the distance, several explosions confirmed more downed Soviets. Grenadine shook her head. "No idea why the Reds are doing that, it's only taking them further into our own territory. Hell, they might run into our relief force if they're really unlucky."

"They haven't exactly made the best calls since this war started," Holly mused.

"We've got some hurt witches, including you." Buzz Buzz cut in, dabbing Holly's shoulder with some disinfectant, causing her to squirm with discomfort. "Hold still, bitch. Three from my squadron, eight others throughout the Wing. The ones who are in really bad shape have been directed to a CASEVAC station about ten klicks to our east. They're still flight-capable so it isn't all that-"

"All I needed to hear." Holly cut her off. "Have your girls find a steelwing dance partner, and stick with them. Go find your wingwitches, we're not d-"

Static burst through her headset, loud enough that Holly scrambled to adjust the volume. She wasn't alone in hearing this, it was on a designated emergency frequency.

"What the-"

“This is Elmendorf tower! Russian super-... surfaced in the Cook... side of Fire Island! We're... attack! Any elements... hear this, mayday! May-”

Years and years later, Holly MacLeod would write in her memoirs that she'd been naive to not expect this.

She would also write that she'd never felt such an acute sense of terror knowing that as missiles began to rain on Elemdorf, she was nowhere near William Wilkins to protect him.

And that's it for the night folks! Thanks for reading and your patience.

Absolutely not. That's his thing, I could never even consider that.

I very much doubt he'll ever resume it, I mean the last we heard from him was November last year.

He's still alive by the time of PJ witches, so he's fine... for now.
