You desperately force yourself awake, finally managing to wrestle yourself back into consciousness and out of the darkness of sleep.

Your entire body hurts... especially the head, so much so that your first thought is that it's a wonder you managed to sleep in the first place.

And it's cold. Deathly cold.

You're lying on your back, on a marble slab in a half-lit room (though you're not sure what the source of this reddish luminescence is: you can't see any). The walls are rough metal, bolted or welded together. You see and hear pipes and gears and wheels and chains working, although the noise is not particularly loud.

You can't even begin to THINK, though. Everything in your head hurts.

You try and sit up from your incredibly uncomfortable "bed", and even that takes you... a hour, maybe? Still, you feel like you're going to freeze to death if you don't move.

Even trying to remember is painful. A ship. A silver coin. A dagger. Nightmares and death.

Two swords are lying next to you on the bed. You dimly remember them as your own. Your clothes, however, feel new. You feel a thin mail of chain under them.

You rummage in your pockets. A silver dinar, minted in Coral, and a short-bladed dagger with no scabbard.

As your eyes get adjusted to the dim light, you see more of this room: a door, metal like all the rest, leads somewhere else. There are two other marble slabs next to your, like beds, unoccupied. The wall opposite to the door is full of drawers and shelves filled with bottles, vases and boxes.

Not much else. This room is smaller than you thought it was.

>Call for someone

Instead of just a timeskip, we're having a PoV switch to a different character, like we had with Tia that one thread.

This time we seem to have switched to an unknown Dusk caste Abyssal exalted; the equivalent of a Dawn caste solar - a warrior type.

OTOH, He seems to only be on a par with Maka as far as XP goes - Tia would wipe the floor with him.
>>
>>31843144
We're playing as an Abyssal. At first he thought he was newly exalted because he's not remembering much, but his character sheet doesn't look like that.

He didn't call anyone a cunt. He casually inserted the word 'fucking' in a polite reminder to turn on their dice, and people instantly started shitposting in response because their widdle fucking feelings were hurt.

You (with great effort) stand up from your uncomfortable bed and walk up to the wall, which now reminds you of a gigantic cupboard in fact.

You find scissors and scalpels, various liquids and fluids, herbs, powders, potions, ingredients, small animals and organs under formaldehyde (some of which you recognize, some not), metal plates, nails, hammers, saws, axes, nuts and bolts and wrenches, bones, stitching wire, wire used for something else you can't recognize but definitely not stitching, sacrificial knives, enchanted gemstones, alchemical components, talismans, and a plethora of off little components and gizmos that just scream "magitech".

You can only presume this is some kind of hospital-

"Oh, you're awake."

You turn around by instinct, trying to draw your swords and put up a guard, and the quick spin is far more painful, for your head, than you'd have anticipated. You almost lose your balance, blacking out from the sudden, unexpected pain, and fall to your knees whimpering.

"Come on, you're still like that? I thought Doc had sewn you back together just fine." The woman sighs, walking up to you. She looks graceful and beautiful, clad in a black and white dress and with long, silky pale gold hair hanging around her like a gentle curtain. Her skin is pale and almost porcelain-like, almost making her look like an real-sized doll.

Her wine-red eyes, though, are different. They are frightening.

She stops by you. You expect her to hold out a hand and offer to help you back to your feet, but instead, she asks first:

"...Do you need a hand?"

>Yes.
>No.

While >>31843325 is indeed name calling, it's as a result of the escalation provided by >>31843308

Cut it out.

Roll dice if you want to, don't roll them if you don't want to, and don't fill the thread with endless arguments.

From now on, if you want to remind people to roll, do so with a minimum of politeness, or shut up and let them figure it out on their own.

The alternative is that I remove the dice-rolling mechanic and just do all the rolls myself, if you prefer.
>>
Rolled 1

Well that escalated quickly.
>>
Rolled 9

>>31843578
When you take more than half an hour to update - which is no fault of your own - people are going to become increasingly likely to start a petty argument because they're bored. The actual subject of the argument is completely fucking arbitrary, and nobody in this thread actually gives that much of a fuck about these dice. If you have a problem with petty fucking arguments, you have a problem with the quest format.

Rolled 7

>>31843605
>Bitching at the QM for reasonably enforcing a modicum of order

>>31843648
Right - when we have material to talk about instead of getting bored. When there's nothing to plan or discuss, people get bored, shitpost, and start fights. Because we're all terrible, terribly people with tiny attention spans and entitlement complexes.

http://whitewolf.wikia.com/wiki/Abyssal_Exalted

>Abyssal Exalted, also called deathknights, are the champions of the Deathlords and their Neverborn masters. The Abyssal Exalted have only recently appeared, and appear to be dark reflections of the returned Solar Exalted, with twisted mockeries of the Solars' caste marks, animas and even Charms. They are a form of Exalted created from the corrupted Sparks of Exaltation of Solar Exalted. Abyssals are arguably as powerful as the Solars, but are constrained by operating largely in a hostile environment (Creation) and by their enslavement to the Deathlords.

tl;dr colour pallette-flipped Solars
>>
Rolled 5

>>31843665
An Abyssal exaltation is a Solar exaltation that was stolen by the Neverborn (undead Primordials trapped in perpetual pain in the Underworld) and warped into a dark inverse. Zenith to Midnight, Dusk to Dawn, and so forth. They're basically Solars, but with powers focused on murder, destruction, darkness, and death.

They're goth/emo Solars.
>>
Rolled 4

Their charms are version of solar ones, except with more murder, death and negative intimacies.

The ones who get into bullshit shitposting fights that keep cropping up? Yes. Absolutely. That or their attention spans are even shorter than I thought and they get into shitposting fights despite also having other entertainment sources available to them because they're impatient about the next update.

People are all terrible and all of us are pathetic. We will keep getting into fights, because we're awful - except the people who ignore all the fights. They're halfway decent, but silent, so we don't know how many there even are of those.
>>
Rolled 1

>>31843701

>>

>Coral
It's a semi-puritanical Victorian Britain. Money is king there, the person in charge is almost always the richest, they're sexist and repressive as fuck, and half the pirates in the West work for them on Letters of Marque issued to make them 'privateers' for Coral. They're bad people, but profitable to work with, and a great place to set pirate games.

They also mint half the coins in the West because, again, rich as fuck. So, us having a Coral Dinar means basically nothing aside from the fact that we're probably in the West.

You struggle back to your feet on your own, refusing the woman's help. Something about her... and this whole place... makes you a bit uncomfortable.

The things that worries you the most, though, is that it's not making you as uncomfortable as it should.

"...Where am I?"

A small smirk dances on her lips in response.

"Still a bit confused, are you? Well, not a big surprise, with the way your head was messed up and all."

"...Messed up...?" And you instinctively lift your hands to your face and head. And now you understand a bit better.

A large cloth eyepatch covers the right half of your face. So that's why you were feeling disoriented. The eye hurts, but it's a dull, distant pain.

Slowly, the idea that you lost an eye sinks in. You touch your brow just above it, and a pang of pain shoots down your spine.

You follow the line up, into your head, and find with your fingers the bumpy feeling of a large, skull-splitting blow, skillfully sutured with very close and narrow stitches.

The wound goes all the way almost to the back of your head, but you imagine your hair hides what the large eyepatch doesn't.

A sword blow to the head, splitting it in two like an open watermelon. Probably from behind.

A ship. A crew. Three hundred talents of Coralian silver in the hold.
Too much money, in the same place, at the same time, for sanity.

"...I died." You realize.

"...I may not be a doctor, but I've seen a lot of fighting in my life." You reply. "This wound" and you point at your head, "Is lethal. No one would survive this. I should be dead."

She smiles.

"...Who the hell are you?"

The woman bows with a flourish. "Feurdelis of Eternity. Midnight Caste Abyssal, and Deathknight of the Tyrant of the Doomsday Machine."

Every hint of courage or bravado instantly leaves your body. These people are the emissaries of Death itself.

If you were a religious man, you'd start praying. If you were a smart man, you'd start running.

But, since you are neither, you just stand there, dumb-founded, as the enormity of that revelation sinks in as well.

"...Why? Why me?"

"Because you called out to Her." She explains. "And she heard."

"To...Her? But... I'm not a priest or a necromancer. I didn't even know her before you mentioned her name just now. How would I..."

"She knows. When people die badly, she knows."

"Badly?"

"Betrayed." She smiles. "Mistress knows a lot about betrayal. That's why she feels compassion for those who have been betrayed like she was. She has seen you, backstabbed, wounded, tossed at sea by a mutinous crew that called themselves your friends only until your hold was full of silver, then threw you away like an old shoe."

"And... she saved me?"

"She made you an offer. Do you remember that?"

Yeah, now you remember. You were sinking in the ocean. You could feel seawater seeping inside your head and eye, both split cleanly open.

You felt powerless. You were willing to do anything for revenge.

Originally, dudes wore eye patches because they didn't want to have lit flames below deck, because it was dark as balls down there. So, while above deck, you would wear an eyepatch to preserve your night vision, then flip it up when you went below so you could still see. That and, yes, fighting, snapped ropes, and so forth tend to lose people eyes.

"...What if I want to refuse this offer of hers?" You ask, already knowing it's a bad idea.

You take one step back.

She takes one step forward.

"But, I guess it can be arranged. You'd, of course, go back to the condition you would have been if she wouldn't have saved your life." She explains.

"You mean she'd kill me."

"We put the "death" in deathknight." She giggles lightly at her own joke. "Think of it as a fair deal. If you go back on it, you lose what you gained."

Deathlords have something called a Monstrance - it's an artifact tied to each Abyssal exaltation. It stores it when the exaltations aren't in use, and can be used to remotely kill the Abyssal it's bonded to at any time with no save. If any of the Abyssals go rogue and join Maka without first destroying or stealing their Monstrance, they're dead. No save, no take backs.

Abyssals have a somewhat shorter leash than Solars.

They either destroyed their Monstances or their Deathlords don't give enough of a fuck to kill them (this describes about half the Deathlords). Considering how this one feels about betrayal, though, Captain Funnypants is probably fucked if he doesn't blow his up first. I SO want him to steal his monstrance with his crew of ghost pirates, though, giving his deathlord a big middle finger and a shout of, "I'm a fucking pirate!" as he sails off into the night.
>>
>>31844403
It kills the Deathknight, which wastes all the resources the Deathlord has put into them. Experienced Deathknights can get away with more than new ones, as their Deathlord patrons are more likely to try to get them back than kill them.

You follow her along the corridors of the complex you're apparently in. Everything is iron and steel, machinery, chains and wheels and clattering mechanisms. It feels more like being inside a machine than inside a castle, tower, or whatever this is supposed to be.

As you finally come across a window, you briefly stop to check outside.

"...What the heck..."

The scenery is brutally alien. Hostile and desolate, with a blood-red sea and blood-red sky. It's hard to tell if it's day or night, despite being dark. Nothing seems to make sense.

"Yes, we're in the Underworld." Feurdelis nods passing by.

"So we ARE dead?"

"We're still alive. We need to breathe and eat. Our heart beats and pumps blood. But the Deathknight's blessing means we are at home here, even moreso than Creation."

"Delightful."

You stare at the barren landscape outside for a few seconds. Utterly devoid of color, life and joy. Soul-crushingly depressing.

"...still beats Azure."

"She's waiting for you." You're distracted by Feurdelis calling to you. She's at the far end of the corridor, standing in front of an enormous steel door covered in spinning gears and machinery.Pipes run along the roof to and from that room, and one has a window for inspections. You really hope that that red fluid you see flowing there is not blood.

You walk up to the door and mentally prepare. You have no idea what to expect.

You don't have time to properly rehearse lines: As soon as you're there, Feurdelis opens the door and you're ushered in.

And there you find yourself in front of the Tyrant of the Doomsday Machine.

"Come in." She says. Her voice is rough, slightly mechanical, almost artificial. At the same time, it still manages to be beautiful, so much so that it makes you want to hear it again.

Everything here is iron and steel, rust and blood. She sits on a throne of horrible machinery, slouched, staring at you with eyes that shine with an unnatural red glow.

"Is your head alright?" She asks you, with a dry smile. "If you're ready, you'll have to do the journey. I'll show you the way. If there is anything you need to do or know first, say so."

Being used to do something we don't actually want to do. Being strung along with promises of power when we're really a zombie. Being kept around only as raw materials and lied to to keep us from running while we have a chance.

There are a TON of things that can still go wrong, that they could still be lying about. The fact that YOU can't think of them doesn't mean that this career criminal wouldn't.

Suspicion is how people like this stay alive and free - and a lack of it is how this one died and got enslaved.

You clench your teeth, stand your ground, plant your feet, and ask the Deathlord: "...Journey? ...Why should I trust you?"

She seems intrigued by your reply. She steeples her fingers and responds in kind: "I like that question. And I have several answers for it."

You fight your instinct of just turning and running away.

"First of all, don't you think that, if I wanted you dead, I would've just let you drown, instead of saving your life?"

"...How do I know that you really saved me?"

"Well, you're alive, aren't you? After a lethal wound-" She stops, and turns to Feurdelis. "...Are you sure it didn't make him stupid?"

The Abyssal shrugs. "Doc told me he'd be fine."

She returns her attention to you. "Why me, then?" You ask her.

"Because I like you." She replies. "And because I can use you."

"That wasn't part of the deal." You protest.

"It was. Weren't you saying that you would have done ANYTHING? I granted you life and even made you my champion. Now, since last time we talked we were a bit strapped on time, I'll ask again."

She stands up. Even not counting the fact that her throne sits on a slightly raised platform, she's very tall - more than two meters, towering above you.

"I have given you power, the ability to have your vengeance, life - even immortality, in fact. And I will continue doing so. In exchange, I ask you to serve me, and aid me in my quest."

"Well then, I guess if they really want my name they'll have to come here and get it. I mean..." And you smile, for the first time in a long time it feels, "...what's the worst that can happen?"

The two of them stare at you for a few seconds, then Tyrant starts chuckling.

"...I knew you were a good choice." She says. "Once you'll be back in top shape, then, you'll be part of our next operation."

"What kind of operation?" You ask. "What are you taking on? A ship? A fleet?"

Well, you assume so. If she wanted you, it means she needed a pirate. Right?

"An island." Feurdelis replies. "We're going to take Tianna."

That doesn't make any sense. "...Tianna's not a particularly rich nation, and has a strong army and Essence artillery. Seems like a bad choice."

"Good, his brain is working fine." The deathlord grins. "And you are right. But we're not after money or land. Did you ever wonder WHERE did Tianna get those weapons?"

"I just assumed they had stumbled into a cache. There's stories of people finding them all over Creation. Maybe someone there just got lucky." You frown. "You're after the cache."

"Not the cache itself, but where it came from." She replies. "But Feurdelis will inform you of the plan later, when she deems it appropriate. She's in charge when I'm not around, is that clear?"

"It's going to take a bit to get everything ready for the plan, anyway" The abyssal adds. "So you're on some free time until we go."

Fair enough, it's too early to tell how we're going to play this fellow anyway so we'll desecrate that bridge with infernal ritual sacrifice when we get to it.

Personally i'm hoping for him to go rogue. He doesn't attempt to get in touch with his glorious solar roots and become good or whatever. He just sails off with his own Monstrance and becomes a feared and powerful pirate lord. He by no means has to be a nice guy. But I'd imagine a career pirate would chafe under the direction and control of someone with an essence cannon to the back of their heads and would get out the instant the realistic opportunity presented itself.

Deathknights are the servants of the Deathlords, who are the servants of the Neverborn. The Neverborn used to be Primordials. The entities that created all of Creation, the Gods, the Heavens, and everything that isn't the Wyld. The Neverborn are the ones who 'died' in the primordial war. They are reduced in power, but still omnipotent enough to create other omnipotent things. Abyssals have all the powers they would have had as a starting solar (but inverted into death-themed powers instead of Life and Creativity) PLUS a booster shot of never losing the memories and skills of their previous lives, andthe blessings of the entities that inadvertently created the concept of 'permanent death', which was never supposed to exist ever. Abyssals may be hobbled by their ties to the Void and Neverborn and Deathlords, but they generally start out in a much better position than an equivalent Solar, if only because they are guaranteed safety in the Underworld and have a place to retreat to.The Infernals are even more powerful.
>>

"...Is it just the two of us here?" You ask Feurdelis, as you both walk out of the room.

You thought audience with a Deathlord would have shaken you more than this, but maybe... you're getting used to how crazy the world around you has become.

"Pardon?" She asks.

"Who else is there, other than the two of us? As far as deathknights go."

"Well, there's you, me, Doc, Phoenix, and Speaker. Although Phoneix is off doing recon in Tianna and Speaker is out on her own time. Mistress is still looking for other candidates, but for now, we have a Perfect Circle."

"Huh." You're surprised. "I thought we were kept on a much shorter leash."

"The leash will be shorter for you, since you're a newcomer." She explains. "But we get a lot of leeway. Anyway, only Doc is in the base right now. He's the one who stitched you together. Apart for them, Mistress has a lot of other servants both mortal and ghostly, and a variety of undead at her command. Though she usually prefer quality over quantity, we always aim for both." Short pause. "Also, we have an armored airship."

Whoa. "...And you still didn't take Tianna?"

"There were... complications." She sighs. "That are getting more and more complicated. A lot of Exalted and other essence-users are starting to swarm around Tianna now. The job's going to be hard."

"Why don't you just strike the place from high altitude? If we can fly." You point out.

"We don't want to damage the city too much, or kill too many people." Is her reply.

"...Why? I mean, I thought Deathknight were..."

"Callous and with no regard for human life?" She replies. "Some are, some aren't. There are practical reasons that we don't bomb the island to Malfeas and back, but Mistress ha also explicitly asked me to keep the damage low if possible, and I intend to follow that order. Besides, city's more valuable to us alive than dead."

"And when will you let me know why?" You ask.

"When I'll know I can trust you." She points out.

Actually Deathlords, and the Neverborn, have memories of EVERY CHARM EVER CREATED. Ripped from the minds of dead people who knew them in life. It's entirely possible for a Neverborn or Deathlord to teach its minions powers that haven't been seen since the First Age. Even FORCE them to learn it whether they like it or not (IIRC a Neverborn did that to a Solar who challenged it once, forcibly implanted the knowledge of every Abyssal charm ever into his mind and shuffled him off into the labyrinth to go mad.)

>>31846049
Infernals are vastly more powerful in standard Exalted. Because they don't have skill-based charms. They have conceptual charms drawn from the Yozis themselves. They can apply their powers to any action that fits with their Patron's Modus Operandi. They have almost no limitations.

Except that's only true for their excellencies. Most of their charms are WAY more narrow than normal Solaroid charms, and in the base system, Solars can usually kick the shit out of them. Fluffwise, they're the same power level.

>>31846231
No? You're just plain wrong. The Infernal excellencies are broad, but situationally limited and cost a number of charm slots equal to the user's Essence. And their actual charms are very limited and their charmsets lack a lot of important options that Solars have entirely. Mechanically, in the actual system, they're weaker than Solars - that's just a fact.

Abyssals suffer from a similar set of problems, because they just have Solar charms narrowed down to being deathy/murderous.

Fluffwise, they're the same power level, and that's probably how they're handled in this quest too.

If this was subjective, I'd agree to a compromise, but mechanics aren't subjective.

the 'christian' version of hell doesn't exist in Exalted. Quick primer on Exalted's Cosmology: We're in the Underworld. A mirror-image-negative of Creation. It exists as a shadowy double of the living world created when several of the Primordials (closest analogue: Greek titans or Hindu Overgods) were slain by Solars and Lunars in the Primordial War. As they were never 'born' and thus cannot 'die', Creation's cycle of reincarnation didn't apply to them, and they broke the whole system by crashing a whole in reality and spiraling down towards Oblivion, absolute Nothingness. They've been teetering on the brink of it for millennia now, plotting to grab hold of the rest of Reality and drag it in with them when they finally go. The surviving Primordials (each a living universe unto themselves) where mutilated and enslaved with chains made out of unbreakable oaths. Their leader, Malfeas, was turned inside out and hollowed out and the others imprisoned inside him for all eternity to rage and rampage amongst themselves with their demons (Demons and gods are the same thing, just serving different masters. Demons serve the Yozis, Gods serve themselves and Gaia). So Malfeas and his brothers built a city and plan (fruitlessly so far) to drag all of creation into their prison so they can get revenge on their creations for betraying them. Only 2 primordials escaped either death or mutilation. Gaia, whose body was used by the other primordials as the building blocks they made Creation out of, and Autocthon who designed most of Creation's more hospitable elements (as well as most life including humans) and happened to be the one who created Exaltation in the first place. He's gone all 'hookers and blackjack', left creation, then slipped into a degenerative coma that's killing him slowly, so he's pretty much a non-issue at this point. His confused sub-gods and mortal nations within his vast self-contained universe? They're a problem.

"Of course I am." You reply.

She smiles. "Follow me."

You do so, through twisty, angular corridors and bizarre rooms full of pipes and machines, and down several flights of stairs, until you reach what seems to be a harbor. A vast room filled with blood-red water, several ships floating on its surface. There are boxes and barrels of assorted supplies and the cranes and warehouses that every port has, with the difference that all of this is inside a building.

The scale boggles your mind.

While you're still looking at the ships, of which are of all kinds - triremes, junks, small messenger ships, sailing vessels - you also notice that the workers in this dock seem to be...

Well, it takes you a moment, but then you realize: what they are is, it seems, ghosts leading and directing the work of several groups of zombies, who do the heavy lifting. It's all very efficient, and very similar to a "normal" port, but still...

One of the ghosts, noticing the two of you, approaches. She is tall and white, evanescent and weightless. She doesn't seem a simple worker or employee, and carries herself with an air of grace and nobility.

"Welcome back, miss Feurdelis." She looks at you. "And you must be the new Chosen of our Mistress. Welcome."

"Right." Feurdelis slaps her forehead. "You still need a title, or some name we can call you by."

She's by no means required to make demands of him that violate his morals/ethics - she has other deathknights she can use for those tasks if she wants.

"...Call me Baron of the Final Tide." You reply.

"At least we have something to call you by." Fleurdelis comments.

The ghost woman bows to you. "I am Reken the Exile. I handle the ships and port here. If you would follow me...?"

"Go with her, she knows her way around here." The abyssal nods. "Have fun."

"I'll have a lot of fun." You reply, following the ghost lady around the port.

The sights still amaze you. "...Do you use zombies for everything?"

"Only the heavy lifting and repetitive work. They're not smart enough to act on complex instructions."

"They don't sound like good sailors." All the rumors of ships crewed by zombies now sound a lot less threatening, when you see how stiff and clumsy they are.

"Oh, don't worry. Mistress told me that we were to prepare for you the absolute best we had."

As you keep walking, you suddenly understand what you mean when, behind a large merchant ship that obstructed your view, you see, moored at a stone pier, a vessel unlike any you've seen.

It's a bit less than thirty meters long, and quite narrow and sleek, but it's not made of wood. It looks like it was brown into its shape, hatched by a black steel egg. A single mast holds the oddest sail you've ever seen, and two powerful-looking paddlewheels line the sides.

On the prof of the boat, a large ballista-like contraption is mounted on a swiveling platform, its lights and lines and gemstones glowing with the power of Essence, as most of the ship's structure and machinery does.

"...Is this a First Age ship?"

"Not technically. We finished production just three months ago. But the blueprints are based on a First Age design. It can sail with a crew of four, and run on its own power for up to ten hours. If you wish to, we can set sail immediately. If you would have me as your first officer."

That sounds like an awesome story, actually.

"Attacked the wrong ship. But in the end it turned out fine: Mistress spared me and offered me a job."

"Alright, good enough." You have to concede. "What's the ship's name?"

"SMB-05. It doesn't have a proper name yet. It's still unused."

"So they're using me to test out new stuff that could blow up under my ass at any time?"

"I don't think it'll blow up." She replies, perfectly serious.

"...It's okay. The crew?"

"Ghosts. The best sailors we have right now."

"Can blast a hole in a fortress wall."

I was thinking of the "sorcerous engines" used on Wavecrest, that actually CREATED Wyld zones (accidentally, as a side-effect of forcing the volcanoes to make the land way more fertile than they naturally would have), but those are probably something different.

As an aside, the Solars (more specifically Eclipse Castes in the First Age, BEFORE they all went crazy) are directly responsible for the whole "human sacrifice" thing being established practice in this area, and the Immaculates are very interested in trying to put a stop to that.

Which is an interesting thing to think about. We might be able to use that to get the local Immaculates to hate us less, since we're after similar goals (and it means we have some serious issues with the way the Anathema did things as well).

>>31848000
>Anyway, care to comment on why this dude was strong as fuck compared to starting Maka? Is it for any special fluff reasons, or the meta reason of wanting him to be sufficiently badass?

"Starting Maka" is a nebulous concept. This system is not tabletop Exalted, so it doesn't have a specific, strictly defined "starting point" for Exaltation so that everyone rolling up a character starts off at the same rough level of power and has the same number of toys to play with.

Here, there's just one PC, and it's Maka. That's really all that matters, so there's no real concept of "starting character" in the system.

That's the meta reason. The ingame reason is "You don't know. If Baron and Maka ever meet and start taking and discussing their powers and they both realize that there was a large gap in power between them when their Exaltation happened, it will become relevant and you might want to discuss it and find the reason.

Maybe not all exaltations are identical. Maybe Tyrant has been sleep-training Baron and that's why he was having nightmares and feeling all his body in pain. Maybe Maka's exaltation works differently from all others because of some ancient sorcery or curse of fate. Maybe Baron actually exalted a year ago and hit his head in combat, or trying to reach a jar on a high shelf, and lost his memories, and they're all pretending he's newly exalted because of some manipulative reason. Maybe the sheet i wrote is a complete lie to misdirect you, because after all, did you end up using any of that stuff? Maybe Maka is actually stronger than she is, but a lot of her potential is locked up for some reason, in await of some specific event.

Or a billion more reasons.

Honestly I'm a bit undecided between letting you guys allocate these points, and just waiting a bit and then popping them in based on what happens. What do you people think?

In any case those backgrounds will have to get some input to happen... for example with Resources: the money isn't just going to magically materialize, there'll have to be a reason.
>>
>>31848483

Justifying improved backgrounds is trivial.

Cult: Maka's presence and fame attracting more members to join.

Resources: Donations from the citizens of Tianna.

I'm against this for one reason: It implies we need to improve out Social stat to improve our backgrounds, which just doesn't make since using any kind of justification, and will be inconvienent once we hit social 5 (or whatever max social is after we improve our essence) and can't improve it anymore

>>
>>31848976
Yeah, it shouldn't require in-game time and effort. They should just sort of fall into our lap naturally as a result of being twice as charming as the most interesting mundane man in the world. Anything else and they're not bonus points at all.
>>
>>31848916
When you increase Social you get to increase all backgrounds, not only the social ones.

a higher Familiar rating means a more powerful familiar. In this context, it means Silk will grow more powerful either personally or in resources at her disposal (servants, artifacts, gossamer).

The full list of backgrounds is: Allies, Artifacts, Cult, Familiar, Followers, Influence, Manse, Mentor, Resources.

And, I think I'll let you people allocate those background points. Thread's on page 9 now, so that's something for another thread to decide i guess.

Will getting an additional dot of allies give us another exalted or will it be taken up by an existing exalt? No idea
Can we get an improved familiar background, and what would it do? No idea
Can we grab an artifact background? *shrug*
>>
Rolled 8

>>31849028
How does artifact attunement work with our limited essence?
>>
>>31849035
>What are the mechanical benefits of having a cult in this system: We don't know
Faster Essence regeneration and having, you know, a bunch of people worshiping you as a deity. Plus gaining some perks of deity status along the way.

>>31849035
>Will getting an additional dot of allies give us another exalted or will it be taken up by an existing exalt? No idea
Not much of a difference if your new allies are new people or old people that now will be allies. (f'r ex, Zareen and Swallow don't count as such because they don't trust you completely yet)

>>31849035
>Can we get an improved familiar background, and what would it do? No idea
You mean "improving our familiar background"? explained above.

>>31849035
>Can we grab an artifact background? *shrug*
Yes.
>>
>>31849028
Actually what does our current Cult rating do, in core 1 dot in cult restores willpower, which isn't a thing here
>>
I'm thinking 2 Artifact and 2 Cult
>>
>>31849028
You might want to rebalance the Allies background to take into account that there is only 1 PC. In a normal game you'd start out with 4 other solars before buying a single dot in background.
>>
>>31849088
This Quest has no attunement (except for really, really enormous artifacts)
>>
>>31849104
>Can we grab an artifact background? *shrug*
>Yes.
Okay so if we want God-kicking Boots and Smashfist, they would cost us 2 dots of Artifacts, each being 1-dot
Other than that I'm thinking bump Cult up to three dots
>>
>>31849104
Well, then at least one or two points need to go into Artifact, and I'd like to seal the deal with Zareen. We want to be able to implicitly trust our assassin and we WANT artifact weapons.
>>
>>31849119
>Actually what does our current Cult rating do, in core 1 dot in cult restores willpower, which isn't a thing here
Slightly faster essence regen, the fact that some people actually think you're a god, and gods are starting to acknowledge the fact.
>>
>>31849028
2 in cult, 1 in resources, 1 in followers.
>>
>>31849148
>>31849156
We could so 2 into Artifact, 1 into Allies, and 1 into Cult
I'm sure we could raise Cult and Allies up on our own though
>>
>>31849205
Nah, we definitely want some Artifact since it's available.
>>
>Baron is setting sail before he gets any real specific orders.
Maybe he'll help us against the Lintha before we become enemies.
>>
Rolled 9

>>31849212
I hope we can raise Artifacts on our own, otherwise we'll never get a Royal Warstrider with 5 dots in AI
>>
>>31849212
I'm in favor of Resources or Familiar instead of cult. There's a lot of fun stuff you can do with a powerful fae
>>
>>31849237
We do have a Solar Crafter, as soon as we start getting Magical Material she can start building us nice shit
>>
>>31849212
Sounds solid, but I'd rather do Resources than Cult. We're pretty cash strapped at the moment, what with manse construction, and have a better skillset for winning cultists than earning money.
>>
>>31849224
That is the full list but i don't think it is available until we find some artifacts in story.
>>
Rolled 8

Guys Guys
Check the last sentence of >>31849028
We're not voting on backgrounds until next thread
>>
>>31849224
Getting Artifacts with points is boring. It's like to Ye Olde Magic Shop in D&D, totally less fun than just adapting your strategies to the relics you pull out of draconic hordes.
>>
>>31849251
The entire point is that these backgrounds fall into our lap instead of us having to hunt them down and work for them. If we take Artifact, week get them as a free gift from the Twilight or some shit.
>>
>>31849282
How the fuck else are we going to get them? Artifacts are rare as balls. At least we can work towards the other backgrounds on our own.
>>
>>31849275
Yeah but we can still discuss them

>>31849248
I do agree we could raise cult on our own, but if were switching out I'd rather pick up Familiar than Resources, we do have some plans to make money, both the land deal with Denzik and raiding Black Atoll, even if the latter doesn't work once the devil ship is down Tianna could do trade much easier, especially with and Eclipse helping us out
>>
>>31849309
We're sitting on a First Age cache, bub. Use your thinkparts.
>>
Rolled 1

>>31849282
Yeah, but think about this quests pacing, this isn't like sitting down at a table where raiding a tomb takes a session or two, we would likely be doing it for several threads if we went tomb raiding here, and not everyone wants that
>>
Rolled 2

>>31849331
The cache doesn't have any non essence weapons, we learned that from Irene the first time we asked
>>
>>31849318
I think I should point out that the way Allies scales means that its ridiculously easy to acquire more, since its the only background that scales linearly.
>>
>>31849331
We tried to raid that cache in the second or third thread. They don't have any personal scale weapons left. Just artillery and the stuff Irene and Amata use. We have had ZERO opportunity to lay our hands on some artifacts up to this point. This is our best - and possibly only - chance for the next who-knows-how-many threads.
>>
Rolled 3

>>31849318
I also like the idea of bumping Familiar. Silk is our dependable source of income and resources, so I'd like to see her be as effective as possible.
>>
>>31849367
I'm also sure we could get Zareen and Swallow on our side too, Zareen might be pretty close to trusting us, we just have to work on RS
>>
>>31849358
>>31849331
>>31849384
There's also the fact that this Magitech-themed Deathlord just finished forming a Perfect Circle to go after what lies under the cache.
>>
>>31849367
Which, as a side note, means it caps out way too fast.
>>
>>31849407
Yeah! Maybe we only have to wait another 30 threads to see them again!

Fuck that. If we don't get artifacts now, there's a good chance it'll be as good as never.

I want to dump all 4 in artifact
1 for Smashfist
1 For god kicking boots
and
2 for a set of discreet essence armor modified to look like pic related
and before people start saying it's too slutty, let me say that it protects our modesty better than our tabbard, as we at least wouldn't be flashing people every time we moved
>>
>>31849468
no
>>
>>31849468
stop pushing for that horrible pic
>>
>>31849468
I will forever say no to this armor
>>

>>31849468
I prefer this, albeit without the panties.
>>
>>31849487
>>31849488
>>31849495
What is wrong with it? Can you at least tell me that?
>>
>>31849468
I don't want armor that requires essence to activate and periodic repair. If essence were as easy to recover in this quest as it is in Exalted, it would be fine, but it's not, so your idea is shit. Discreet Essence Armor can suck a dick compared to spending that essence on our defense charms instead.
>>
Rolled 8

>>31849505
Does this quest have Perfect Defense charms?
>>
>>31849503
See:
>>31849505
>>
>>31849512
No, but our soak charms are a much better use of our extremely limited essence than discreet essence armor.
>>
>>31849468
>let me say that it protects our modesty better than our tabbard, as we at least wouldn't be flashing people every time we moved
Only technically, the point of the Tabard isn't how much it actually hides our body, but how much it looks like it hides, when we're standing or walking we flash side boob and a lot of leg, but when were fighting or running or dancing is when we start flashing people, but that's the point
This armor is just all there all the time, it doesn't suggest anything or pretend it's just, there
>>
>>31849505
>>31849516
Ir would do the same thing as our defense charms, you can chose not to activate it, and it's automatic activation would protect us from surprise attacks
I'm just trying to think of a way for us to keep Maka's impractically sexy wardrobe while still being protected
>>
>>31849512
I'm pretty sure we can pick some up once we hit Zenith 5
>>
>>31849556
Also, EF said that armor and Soak charms stack the same way weapons and damage boosting charms do
>>
>>31849512
yes, no scene long ones though. However normal damage is capped at 3.
>>
>>31849512
No, that was made clear from the first thread.
>>
>>31849503
It looks terrible
>>31849501
That would be nice
>>
>>31849556
Then just buy more soak charms! There's no need to try to hamfistedly cram stripper jewelry into the quest as really shitty, too-expensive-to-actually-activate armor. It's dumb, and mechanically bad for someone who already has soak charms eating up her EXTREMELY limited essence supply.
>>
>>31849501
That doesn't look like armor or something that could be made into maitech, making it useless for protection
>>
>>31849501
We can just get gossamer armor that looks like that. No reason to spend artifact dots on it if that's all we want. Gossamer is all about armor that's just a cool outfit.
>>
>>31849635
Soak doesn't stack with itself, we need soak and armor if we want maximum protection
>>
Rolled 2

>>31849638
I thought we wanted armor that didn't require Essence to use.
>>
>>31849638
See:
>>31849659
>>
>>31849669
I'm the one who suggested >>31849468, it's not like we ever use our essence for anything anyway, we've run out once in the whole quest
>>
>>31849664
Yes, it does, actually. Armor is also just soak, and instant or permanent soak effects stack with scene-long ones. Armor that requires essence to activate, though, is fucking worthless to us, because we barely have enough for our current buffs and attack charms. If you want armor, figure something out that just plain works.
>>
>>31849709
We consistently have essence problems in fights, which is the only time when that armor would be used. Between buffs and attack charms, we never seem to have enough during actual action. Peace time stuff is when we never spend our essence.
>>
We could do something like Xena armor, it's not as lewd as I would like, but if it would be our dedicated fighting armor instead of something we always wear, it might work
>>
>>31849722
>Yes, it does, actually.
I'm not talking about in general, I'm talking about in this quest
But you know what? Fuck it, you win, I don't care enough to argue about this anymore, we'll go armorless

>>31849794
I'm taking about this quest too. EF explicitly spelled out that all our soak charms stack if we get multiple soak charms. Also, good, your idea was shit. If we get armor, it should be real armor, or gossamer stuff that looks like clothes, not your overpriced magitech trash.
>>
>>31849782
We should get gossamer armor. It wouldn't eat up artifact dots, wouldn't cost essence, would look like a fucking sweet outfit of our choosing, and wouldn't have any more mobility penalty than normal clothes. It's the obvious choice for Maka.
>>
>>31849835
Lets just get Breastplate
>>
>>31849835
>EF explicitly spelled out that all our soak charms stack if we get multiple soak charms.
I don't remember that, and in fact remember the exact opposite of that, but I've already deleted the picture because the only reason I had it was because I thought it would make good armor for Maka.
>>
>>31849871
I think this was the original plan before we started talking about armor, we get Smashfist and God-kicking boots for two dots and put the other two elsewhere
>>
>>31849835
>>31849871
>>31849906
If gossamer provides armor, aren't we already protected? Unless it actually needs to be practical, in which case forget it, because I refuse to give up on Maka's mild exhibitionist tendencies
>>
>>31849895
Well, you remember super fucking wrong, and I don't give a shit about your whiny, passive-agressive picture deletion. If you want her to have body jewelry like that picture, I'm on board for it - it looks fucking hot. It's the shitty magitech armor idea that's fucking terrible and dumb.
>>
>>31849906
Or we could dump all four in Artifact and get Wings of the Raptor
http://exaltedpast.wikidot.com/artifact:wingsoftheraptor
I'm joking of course
>>
>>31849938
I wan't trying to be passive-aggressive, I was responding to your active-aggression by saying you don't need worry about me bringing it up again as I no longer have the image
>>
>>31849930
No, because we requested clothes instead of armor. If we requested it, we could get a ballgown that protects like chain swathing or a t-shirt that protects like breastplate. The only requirement is that it had to cover the same area as the armor it's emulating - no full plate nipple clamps.
>>
>>31849981
I say keep it around to suggest body jewelry later. Just drop the Discreet Essence Armor idea. Like I said, it's hot - as jewelry.
>>
>>31849987
>The only requirement is that it had to cover the same area as the armor it's emulating - no full plate nipple clamps.
So it's impossible for Maka to have armor that doesn't repress her inner exhibitionist without spending essence.
Oh well, to bad I guess.
>>
>>31850211
Our Corset/Tabard could be refitted to armor, it's has decent coverage
That's probably why we haven't actually worn it yet
