You are Shax Bonemurder, and you're flying through the air! Your nice druid friend, Bearbreath, is a giant eagle, and is carrying you to the top. It's slow going since apparently your sword is heavy. Who would have thought? After you land on the wall, you sneak into the corner and wait for the gnoll druid to get done ferrying the rest of your party.

Once Brokagh reaches the ramparts, he quickly seeks out and silences the guards in the approximate area. Fetidclaw keeps a watchful eye on the surroundings as you get Bearbreath, now in gnoll form, Sitri, and Allonces in a strategy meeting.

"This place is packed with cultists, boss," Fetidclaw murmurs to you. It seems to be a strange layout. The middle of this walled temple is a stepped platform with some sort of ritual taking place, surrounded by a wide open field. The walls, which you're currently on, lead into some sort of maze-like structure that opens out into the field.

What's the plan?

>The best way through a maze is to smash through the walls. Let's get to the ritual, get the item, and get out!
>No need to make our lives harder on the way out of this country. Let's sneak through the complex, explore it thoroughly, and make our way to the ritual.

Sneaky.
>>
>>31803267
Can't we, like, just hop from wall-to-wall if we're on top already?

No smashing to alert the guards, and no confusing puzzles to solve.
>>
>>31803267
Sneaky.

Remember we have a grappling hook and should use it to cheat the maze.
>>
>>31803348

It's enclosed!

>>31803385

>>
>>31803348
This sounds like a plan, run on top of maze and if someone falls use your grapple to help them back up. Failing that Bearbreath can fly us over the ritual and drop us on them and everyone else can try to catch up.
>>
>>31803446
Can anyone in the group cast silence?

I'd suggest using our diamond turtles as a distraction while we sneak in and stop the ritual but I have a feeling people will complain about using pearls.
>>
>>31803593
May as well just use them when we get there, no one expets giant crystal turtles to fall on their heads.
>>
>>31803593
The only thing I would say about the pearls is to maybe keep one on reserve for teleporting to the cave place.
>>
You punch an open palm and crack your knuckles. It's time to bust some heads! Your heads. For thinking through this puzzle. You declare loudly, "Alright guys, let's just go through the stupid temple sneaky like!" And pump your fist.

"Maybe not the best idea to be shouting that sort of thing boss," Brokagh murmurs at you, nervously. What a spoilsport.

Hefting your sword, you and your party peek into the entrance. The place is pretty dark, and lined with torches. Sitri taps you on the shoulder, and whispers, "Hey, think maybe the place is trapped? Let's take a sip from that chalice before we get into trouble." The satyxis gives you a wink and a thumbs up. So inspiring. You pour some liquid into the silvery chalice and take drink. Nothing really looks that different. "So? Feel any different?"

"Nope," you reply with a shrug. Brokagh slaps you on the back and then walks into the maze. Fetidclaw follows him shortly after. "You guys don't get too far ahead, okay? Don't wanna lose you." The pair of orcs look over their shoulders and nod before stalking into the flickering corridors.

As you're stepping through the hallways Allonces raises a pointed hand. "You know, I heard the universal maze solution is to just follow one wall and you'll eventually reach the exit no matter what." It sounds like good advice, but you wished it had come from a different source. Occasionally you pass by a guard with an arrow through the head or a broken neck. Those orcs mean business, but they've left a trail to follow them. Eventually, Brokagh doubles back.

"Hey, boss, Fetid is keeping an eye on them, but there are two paths ahead..."

Which one do you take?

>One path is heavily guarded, and looks like it leads to a storage area. Loot, maybe? There is chance they might raise the alarm though.
>The other path smells like a lot of incense and things. Probably less guarded, but might be full of priests.

"Then let's head over to Fetid and check out these guards!" You tell Brokagh. He grins widely and waves you on. The junction appears, and you pass by the section whose smell was so strong it made your nose wrinkle, ahead you see the leatherbound orc tracker leaning back against a wall. She places a finger over her lips, and whispers, "Ahead is a fairly large group of them. I'm counting ten guards. They all seem to be wearing ceremonial armor of some kind and using studded metal clubs."

"Any enchantments?" Sitri asks, leaning in conspiratorially.

Fetid shrugs, "Not sure. I can't tell that sorta thing. There are also two reanimated corpses in thick golden armor. They're about the size of an ogre, and don't seem to have any weapons on them. I can't tell what they're talking about."

You process this information, "So the room is fairly large then?" That'd be nice, you can go all out with your sword.

The orc gives a tentative shake of her head, "Not precisely. It's two chambers. I couldn't exactly look in the second one, but the first is rather large and has a medium sized pathway into the next. I counted some guards I saw milling back there into the initial estimate, but I don't know if there are any surprizes back there or not." Can't know everything.

Bearbreath glances at you, rubbing his muzzle. "I can't call lightning in here very well, not without probably hitting you guys. Fire storms are right out, too. But this place is crawling with insects," he wraps a knuckle on the wall, "I could probably get them to swarm the guards and stop them from doing anything too tricky.."

Waving a hand, Allonces butts into the conversation with your MVM, "Oooh! Ooh! I know some sleep curses. I could probably knock a few out and we just take care of the rest."

>Incapacitate guards with magic, and mop up the rest. Focus on not letting anyone escape or sound the alarm.

Bearbreath spreads his paw on the wall and closes his eyes. After a moment, he opens them again and nods at you. Allonces has been chanting this time and has a group of needles in her hand, which are now glowing with a strange purple aura. Your main weapon isn't going to be much good here, so you grip the holy sword on your back determinedly as you wait to give the signal. At your sign, the group dashes into the chamber. Allonces throws a few needles, putting two guards to sleep near instantly, as three more find themselves covered in beetles, the closest one flailing around till Brokagh caves his skull in with a punch.

The other two beetle covered guards make quick work for you and the lynx, who have little difficulty taking them out. That's five down...

Two guards leap to attention, reading their weapons, but Fetid feathers their neck and shoulder with a two shots, delivered faster than you thought possible with archery. The other is in a corner so you leave your main sword back, slashing at him with your secondary weapon in an underhanded grip, wounding him without finishing him off. A massive grey hand places itself on the doorway into the second chamber, a lumbering grey and gold figure pulls itself through, slapping Bearbreath away with a heavy blow. You gotta get past that thing!
>>
Exchanging glances with Brokagh, you swap off, bringing your heavy sword around in a wide arc to slice at the undead monstrosity, cutting deep into one of the arms it was using to block.

You're not sure if the facility has an alarm system or not, but it is going to take a while to hack through this beast. Hopefully the second isn't right behind it, but you've got five guards waiting in the other room. Allonces and Sitri have finished murdering the sleeping guards as you give a quick glance back into the room. If you drop your sword you can probably slide past the beast...

>One enemy at a time. It will take a while, but you shouldn't let your guard down! Hack him to bits and rush through.
>The priority is ensuring that no one notices the fight! Slide under the golden armored undead monster and try to take out the remaining guards with your back up weapon. Allonces is small enough to fit in there with you, and so is the lynx. Everyone else will be left back.

Alright! Let's start writing.
>>
There isn't a lot of room to get any good cuts in with your sword in here, and you quickly judge that getting this giant out of the way will take a reasonable amount of time. Minutes you don't know if you can afford. The situation is just too risky. You look at Allonces and nod at the giant. She gives you a bit of a confused look and when you drop your giant sword and slide between it's legs, narrowly avoiding an overhead smash, she gives a shout of surprise. You dash for the door as you see the other giant peek its sightless head through the door frame. With a jumping motion, you stab down into the gold-plated mask with your holy weapon.

You've never actually tried it before, so you attempt to SMITE EVIL as defined by you. Which is what this guy is, now that he's in your way. The sword glows brightly, a shimmering aura that seems to twist between various colors before spiraling into a mix of a dark blue and rainbow tinted pearl. You drive the sword straight through the mask, and the body of the giant convulses before collapsing. Well, maybe you could just done that to the one behind... oh the weapon completely loses its shine. Maybe you can only do it once a day or something. Still, you have the small sword in hand and glance around the room. Five guards are at the ready and staring at you. Clearly when they heard the commotion in the next room, they didn't expect a small goblin girl with a tiny sword to take out a giant in one hit.

A few seconds later Allonces rolls up next to you, "Hey, boss. How are yo- woah, you take that thing out already?" The huge body is crumpled near the doorframe. If you'd done that to the first giant you woulda had a time moving him out the way, at least.

The elf girl pulls out one last needle and flicks it at the one guard who backed away, knocking him to sleep. The other four rush you, clubs raised.

"Oh, jeez," Allonces says, backing up from the oncoming group of guards with a defensive stab.

"Don't you have, like, witch curses or something?" You say, swinging the small sword wildly to keep the guards at bay. You are NOT used to this thing. You remind yourself to start practicing with this sword, too.

Allonces bites her lip, "Yeah, but they're all pretty slow stuff. I'm not sure how many of them are relevant in the heat of battle." She manages to wing one of the guards. It's better than you're managing.

You block a clumsy swing with a club, the shock reverberating down your arm. "Then why did you learn the dumb things!?"

"I dunno they seemed fun!" She's getting pretty defensive here. Argument wise. You duck below a guy, cutting at he legs, distracting him long enough for Allonces to get a lethal stab on him.

Two to go. Or one, as a ball of fur, claws, and purring takes out another guard in a savage leap. This wasn't so bad. The last guy backs up, suddenly finding himself out numbered. Rushing him all at once, you, the elf, and the lynx finish him off. Quickly walking over to the remaining sleeping guard, you see he was right next to some kind of pull handle. Weird. Must be the alarm. You wonder where- Oh, right! You turn back to the hallway, and see Brokagh and Fetidclaw trying to push the slumped over remains of the first giant out of the doorframe. That looks like it will take a second. You decide to search the rest of the room.

There is a large, thickly banded iron door on the other end of the chamber. It does look like a storage room. On the wall are three levels. You wait for the gang to clear the way, get your big sword back, and walk back into the room.

You look at the door, and look at your sword. "Hey boss, I think some of these levels might operate that door. I'm not sure which." You look at the levers, then at your sword. That looks like some pretty thick metal.

Allonces places a hand on the door. "I think it is enchanted somehow, we definitely can't punch through it." You pick up your sword and walk in front of the door. What'd the Sea Mom say about channelling her power? You're not sure you are familiar with how to do this... You close your eyes and think about connecting with the primordial goddess of the ocean depths.

You feel the water lapping at your feet. "Uh, boss?" You open your eyes. Writing tendrils of dark, cold water are spiraling around you. Willing the power into your sword, the water falls and fades, but your sword feels noticeably heavier.

You step, bring the blade up over your head, slicing partly through the ceiling, and down in a straight slash. The sword rips through the door, the metal rippling as it passes through effortlessly.

>You've gained: Clam Up, you Barnacle Blasted Battler! Congratulations!

There is stunned silence as the party looks at you. "Hey, I didn't know if it'd work either," you respond with a shrug. Brokagh quickly walks over and kicks the door aside, peeking into the room. It's dark, and the smell is awful. You have a feeling this isn't treasure at all. There are strange runes on the ground, and a chained up figure on the wall. It is a withered humanoid form, with shriveled grey skin, sunken beady eyes, and stringy gross hair. Looks sorta like your mom.

Allonces eyes the runes carefully. "Should be okay to step on them. It won't disrupt whatever spell is in place." At her voice, the imprisoned thing looks at her.

"Release me."

"Who are you? I'm a raid leader."

"Release me."

"Why are you locked up? Did you do something they didn't like?"

"Re-" Okay, yeah so this guy doesn't shut up. Got it. You turn around to the party.

"Any ideas?"

Brokagh shrugs. "Typically, if something is chained up I just leave it alone. No point in messing with things I don't have any idea about." Sound advice!

You walk over to the emaciated creature and crouch down in front of it. "Hey, if you want me to do that you gotta tell me why I should and why you're like this."

"I will reward you with power unending."

"Okay, that's nice, but I got plenty of that already. What are you doing here, dummy?" You lightly tap the things head with your knuckles.

"The blind fools of Utalaga chained me. Seeking to prevent me from ruling once more from my throne of blood." Throne? You get up and look at Allonces.

Elbowing the elf girl you lean in close, "Hey do you think that was a 'throne' with a capital 'T'?" She looks at you like you're crazy.

Sighing, Allonces shakes her head, "I have no idea what you're talking about." Wow, that was a waste of time. You shuffle back to the prisoner.

Let's get info in a roundabout way! "Hey, I saw one guy use blood magic. Did you teach them that, or...?" The creature turns its head and spits on the ground. The saliva is sorta green looking which is mega gross.

"Magic? You call those pathetic conjurations magic?! I could fashion all in my image! Utalaga was unstoppable during my reign!" Definitely sounds like a capital 'T' kinda throne. "My beauty was unmatched, my might unquestioned, and my rule unending!" It definitely did end, though.

Spreading a wide, sickly grin, you can see most of the teeth have fallen out of the prisoner's mouth except for a few jagged things. "A blood oath, of course. Let me feast on the blood of you or one of your allies. It will bind us together."

You stand up, stretch and look at your party. They're all a little weirded out by this guy. "So, what, are you just gonna leave him, boss?" You think about it. He's wasted a lot of your time, is gross, and has repeatedly demanded things from you. You don't like his attitude! It's time to teach him a lesson. You pull a sword out from behind your back.

"Hey, you're probably pretty hard to kill, but you're like those grey undead monsters, right? Powered by blood? I killed them with a holy sword." You playfully balance the sword between two hands as you walk towards the captive creature, "Did you know that this is a holy sword?" The chained up prisoner eyes you carefully, not saying anything. You crouch down in front of him and shove it right into his face. There is a hissing sound as smoke comes from the wound, and eventually his skin starts to crumble away, leaving nothing but a jet black skeleton in a charred heap. There was also an unearthyl howl or something, you weren't paying attention cause you walked away by then.

Allonces is whistling as you start walking back down the corridors, "That dude was mega creepy."

"Yep."

"I bet he was probably hot, though,"

"What."

"Drinks blood? Vampires? Vampire dudes are always hot."

Brokagh turns around, "Nah, they have like, shriveled heads and bat fangs. And big blind eyes, and a turned up pointy nose with huge nostrils."

The elven girl gives him a look, "No they don't, they're suave silky smooth skinned pale noble types. With long pretty hair and captivating eyes. I'm pretty sure about this."

"Are you sure you're sure?" Sitri asks, confused, "I thought vampires were all burly dark haired barbarians."
>>
Allonces looks flabbergasted, "Where the heck did you hear that?"

Fetid shows up and puts a finger to her mouth, "Hey, stop shouting at each other. The incense smell ahead is gone, and the way is clear, but that doesn't mean there aren't any ahead." Oh, right. Back to business.

You're not sure how much time has passed, but you finally find the exit. You skipped probably dozens of side chambers, though. You're sure it was just filled with boring priests and servants or something.

The field ahead is wide open. How do you wanna get to the platform?

Brokagh looks around outside, and Fetid dashes back in. "There aren't really any guards out there as far as I can tell. Most of them were probably in the fortress. Plenty of people, though." That was weird, you were pretty sure that field was empty.

Bearbreath looks at him, "This is their main center of worship, right? So that's to be expected. What's the plan?"

You think about it. You've cleared a way in and out. You can probably avoid any real organized persuit of you at this point. "Alright, let's just go up there and get the thing."

The orc pugilist grins, "No more sneaking around then? Alright. Let's get out there and smash some faces." Everyone else looks fine with it. You ready yourselves, and head out into the field. It's completely empty as you and your companions start running to it. They're dashing in zig zag patterns. You're not sure why.

"Shax! Look out!" Allonces yells. Yeah, you are looking out. At the nothing. "What the heck? You ran right through... that. Oh." Allonces slows down, and starts shoving her arms out in random directions, then begins to pout. "Hey, guys! I don't know what is going on, but apparently none of these people are real."

"Whatever, Allonces, hurry up!" You say to her, as you keep running. Eventually you reach a massive flight of stairs. It's also empty. Your friends keep freaking out about various things as you ascend. They're so dumb. It takes a long time but you reach the top. There are four hooded figures kneeling around a glowing circle. In the middle of the circle is some sort of coffin looking box. Is that the artifact or...?

You get your sword ready, and hear Sitri murmur, "You mean these things are actually real?" Bringing it down on the head of one of the robed guys and crushing him easily makes a loud crack be heard. A bolt of lightly seemingly flashes up from the murdered robe guy, and a pillar of fire comes careening down from the swirling clouds above and lances some forest in the distance. Uh, you thought it was pretty big but it was that far away? How big was that flame strike?

"Boss..." Brokagh says, pointing up. More columns of fire come spiraling down.

"Hm." You say, and slash another guy to death. Another lightning bolt goes up, and green fire starts to come down. Those are some pretty colors. You finish off the last two. A practical rainbow of fire is shooting out everywhere, and you're pretty sure there is probably a forest fire and other dangerous things going on around Utalaga now. Sorry, you awful country.

You walk over to the box and kick it open. The clouds overhanging disappear near instantly, and the sun shines down. Inside the box is a boy. Or at least, you think it is a boy?

Allonces walks over, and puts her hand on the person inside. "Cold." You notice oddly shaped joints and a sectioned middle. Is this kid a doll? What the heck. You tell Fetid to pick him up. He's about the size of you. You look around the coffin's insides for anything else. That's it.

"Hm. The illusions seem to be gone," Sitri says, glancing out at the plaza. "I wonder what they were even doing here in the first place." This place is batshit insane.

LOOT BONUS!

I don't think she has ever sworn aloud. Most characters try not to swear around her and feel oddly guilty when they do, but no one can explain why.

We need to get back into the looting game

This guy right here is why I'm lazy

Blame him

But don't blame him thank him for being awesome

Also it looks like "if it is nailed down..." has won.

>You can now get Advanced Lootology - Looting properly is a science. Most people think you can just take whatever is shiny. Some people might even know how to spot hidden compartments and get valuables that way. Amateurs. With Advanced Lootology, you can not only loot a place for maximum reward always, but you also are able to adapt their strategies into your own playbook!

So if we get poison next, we can unlock "My Little Assassin Can't Be This Cute"? Cool.
>>
>>31809472
Tell the graphics guy he's awesome, I just organized things one time and use paintbucket.

Thanks for saying so, though.
>>
And with that I'm done for tonight. I got an early start so we had an early finish. I hope you guys had fun today! It was a lot of fun to write. I'm gonna run early again Thursday.

Thank you for reading and playing! You guys are just great, and your discussion never cease to amuse me. I know a lot of you guys liked the idea of Shax running around and just beating her way through problems with a sword, so I hope her getting powered up doesn't disappoint you.

On my to-do list is: Making a pastebin organizing Shax's various magic items and abilities.

I hope you guys enjoy exploring this continent a bit longer! If you get tired of Namek I can get you back home pretty quick.

I tried making this picture my twitter header but twitter wouldn't let me.

I was VERY disappointed. The dude is great and I love him.

Thank you for running Chief! It's awesome having you and OWQ around.
>>
>>31809532
Thanks for a fun thread, Chief.

My only worry about power is getting caught up with the annoying responsibilities that come with them but Shax's personality and general MO kind of makes it easy to avoid that shit or have fun incidentally doing it.

thx 4 runin budi gud thred

How many thrones are there to sit on? I want to get back to the rest of our raiding group, but I don't want to pass up a chance at godhood.
>>
>>31809532
Honestly, I kind of enjoy watching Shax stumble into more and more power.

The giant sword was the start of this process.
>>
>>31809604

Twenty! I made that up just now. But it is a good number so I'm sticking with it.
>>
>>31809604
I say we just do the three(two left) we know of and move on.

I don't want to be stuck here forever tracking other ones down.
>>
>>31809623
>twenty

That sounds like we'll be here for a while... or maybe we'll just blitz through them with a kind of snowball effect.
>>
>>31809559
Haha, that's great.
>>
>>31809651

You don't gotta sit in all of them or even most of them. There are a bunch of gods on this continent, after all.
>>
>>31809651
We will go on a big boss rush mode before fighting the final boss?
>>
>>31809690
How many would we have to sit in to start having a visible effect on the continent?
>>
>>31809690
Could we...take our Thrones with us when we leave? How Advanced would our Lootology have to be to pull something like that off?
>>
As tempting as finding all the thrones is I'd rather not be here and away from our raid group that long.

Going after the other two is fine but unless we run into an oppurtunity to find another easily(like what would have happened if we rolled better talking to the vampire guy), we should go back to the Dragon Lady.
>>
Did we ever learn dragon lady's name?

I think it's perfectly IC to call her dragon lady but I cant help but feel the only reason why everyone does is because we collectively don't know/forgot her name.
>>
>>31809532
>I know a lot of you guys liked the idea of Shax running around and just beating her way through problems with a sword, so I hope her getting powered up doesn't disappoint you.
Make more of the future powerups giant sword related and all will be forgiven
>>
>>31809854
We also need a hat.
>>
>>31809869

>get a wide brimmed straw hat
>shax lets her hair down
>puts on a summer dress

>>

We need an excuse to use this as an infiltration plan. Poor Shax'll hate every minute of it.
