You are Flying officer Julian Reber of the Royal Air Force. You joined the RAF to fight the BETA, aliens who threaten to exterminate human civilization. You've just return from some particularly gruelling operations in Italy, and after something resembling a decent meal and a good night's sleep on dry land, you're ready to go back to your hobbies and do some engineering.

After breakfast, you step out into the cold winter morning and make your way to Project Round Table's research and development hangar. You've made some interesting innovations during your mission in Italy, but you still have much work to do if you want a weapon platform that can defeat the BETA.

Flight lieutenant Mary Wright is waiting for you just inside the research facility.

"Good morning, Mary." You greet her. "Sorry I haven't had time to greet you yet. I was still a little worried that my hard would explode from all the drugs and stimulants."

"It's fine," Mary says as she stifles a yawn. "I was busy right until sunrise anyway. Things went better than I expected and... here, let me show you before we start working on the Excalibur."

She leads you through the building and towards one of the larger labs. When you enter the room, you see...

You see what looks like some kind of power plant for a TSF. It looks a bit off, but you can't spot the exact details from this distance. If it's the G-element-based engine Mary was working on, it must be missing the fuel and exhaust ports. You're not entirely sure how it could convert the chemical reaction of G-elements into energy either, or if it can be used to power any kind of flight system, but that's not the most important thing right now.

"Does it work?"

"Mostly," Mary says. "It generates power and according to our calculations, it should be able to run almost indefinitely. Maintenance is a little difficult, but not impossible to handle. The major problem is that it can't interface with a turbofan, so it's useless for flight as it is. We've attempted to find an alternative flight systems, but results have been... inadequate."

"How inadequate?"

"According to our experiments on animal carcasses, the flight mode pulverizes any organic matter within 20 meters of the engine," Mary says. "Until we can find someone to regulate the output, we won't be able to do anything with it."

"Wonderful," you mutter. "Well, I guess that can wait. Shall we begin work on the Excalibur?"

"Certainly." Mary smiles. "We have most of the internal components, but we still haven't picked a frame yet. We do have the materials ready though, so it shouldn't take more than a week or two to pull everything together. We don't have any operations scheduled, so I was able to get additional manpower."

You think about the TSF frame schematics you have available for the design.

The first frame is the Typhoon, your current TSF. It's balanced for ranged and melee combat, with a slight emphasis on melee. It's also set to become the new standard for European TSFs, so you'll have convenient access to spare parts if the hull takes any damage. It's also not based on military secrets you stole from a foreign nation, so parading it is unlikely to get you in trouble. The main downside is that it's mostly designed for rank and file, so it's something of an all-purpose TSF. You'll get a solid performance out of it in all situation, but it might not have the decisive advantage you'll need in really dangerous situations.

The second frame is the legendary YF-23 Black Widow, the frame you stole from the Americans. Known for its superior speed and agility, the Black Widow became the wet dream of every self-respecting TSF pilot when it was mothballed in favour of the F-22 Raptor and its anti-TSF capabilities. The Black Widow itself was designed primarily for Hive infiltration and while it suffered from massive downside, these issues were not related to the frame itself. With the technology currently available to you, its operational time should be the same as the Typhoon's. The obvious downside is that the schematics are secret, and people will probably want to know how the EU got them

The third from is the Su-47 Berkut, Russia's entry for the third generation of TSFs. Much like the Black Widow, it's designed for anti-Hive operations. From what you can tell, the frame isn't as aerodynamic as the F-22 Raptor's, but it should be extremely manoeuvrable in close quarters and it's designed for additional close-quarter weapons. Again, the main downside is that the design is stolen. Russia will be asking questions if they see you parading in a TSF that's only just barely a prototype.

From those descriptions, I'm getting the idea that the black widow is more shooty while the berkut is more stabby.
>>
>>31764307
Since you're only using the frame, this is mostly a cosmetic decision. You've already got the internal components and all your options are designed to be extremely aerodynamic, so there shouldn't be a negative effect on speed or manoeuvrability. In addition, the Black Widow's stealth systems can be adapted to all the frames, so you'll be getting Europe's first stealth TSF.

>Use the Black Widow's frame.
>>
>>31764398
Using stolen TSF designs is going to be the major issue, but for the most part, all three frames are designed for the same combat doctrine. The Typhoon is just slightly more geared towards ranged combat, while the Berkut has slightly better melee weapons. The Black Widow is kind of in the middle, since it was designed for older tech.

Picking one frame over the others won't give you a massive advantage or disadvantage in any single area, so you don't have to decide based on mechanical advantage is what I'm saying.

Maybe we should just use the Typhoon and install a the stealth system.

Does Black Widow have better speed/agility than Typhoon?
>>
>>31764635
They all have a base bonus of +5. On top of that, Berkut has +1 to Melee, Typhoon has +1 to Gunnery and Black Widow has +1 to Piloting. Just enough to say it's there, but not to make one significantly better than the others.

Kind of a shame that they're all functionally identical base-stat-wise, but the two we actually worked to obtain come with lasting diplomatic downsides.

That said, superior maneuverability is a universal benefit no matter what position in a squadron you are occupying, so for a wide production run the Black Widow frame is probably worth using irrespective of the potential diplomatic issues.
>>
>>31764357
typhoon, moving a +1 bonus around is'nt worth openly parading around with stolen military technology.

Looks like the Black Widow wins. It doesn't have the Berkut's chainsaw katars, but it's still got melee weapons for when you run out of bullets in the middle of a Hive.

>>

For what it's worth, at least in the Black Widow's case, the developer basically handed it to us outright because he'd rather it benefit someone rather than sitting around gathering dust. Not really all that much stealing on our part, just that we were willing to be the guy the plans were got leaked to.

The Berkut schematics would definitely be a worse diplomatic issue, though, yeah.

I mean, you could've just stipulated this from the outset (that the choice of frame would primarily be for flavor reasons) instead of harping on the inevitable diplomatic consequences of choosing a non-standard frame.

Still going with the Black Widow, if only for the satisfaction of a highly-desired high-end frame long thought scrapped finally coming to fruition. Both for Julian's fellow TSF fetishists around the world, and for its creator who finally had enough of his hard work getting thrown into filing cabinets to rot because of the US' change in priorities.

I count 5 for the Typhoon and 8 for the Widow. Finishing the update...
>>
>>31764357
You think about the schematics you recovered. The Typhoon is inconspicuous, but you already have it. If you're going to pilot a prototype TSF, you should try one that does something different. You could use the Berkut to one-up the Russians, but...

"Black Widow."

"What is it with pilots and the Black Widow," Mary asks. "You know it was just a hangar queen, right?"

"It's the principle of the thing," you say. "With additional development, its flight time could have been extended. The Americans just killed it because they wanted an anti-TSF TSF. I'm here to kill aliens, so I need a TSF that kills aliens."

"Fair enough, I suppose," Mary says. "I'll make the arrangements."

Building a TSF frame without moulds is, apparently, not very easy. However, Mary has more than enough staff to take care of it and it's not like you need to mass-produce the components. It also gives you more control over the frame and lets you make some small adjustments to update the design a bit to current standards.

You spend the next week assembling the Excalibur's various components. As daunting as the task seems, it becomes a whole lot simpler when you just think of it as performing You spend a morning assembling one of the arms, then you spend the afternoon working on the other arm. While waiting for more of the components to arrive, you perform computer checks on the parts that have been assembled.

Elaine and Vivian come by a few times during their spare time. They spend as much time with Mary as they do with you. For the most part, you avoid talking about work. You're still exhausted from your operations in Italy and the G-bombing of the Yokohama Hive is still the big news. For Mary's sake, you got out of your way to avoid it.

>(cont.)
>>
>>31765723
For the most part, your work progresses smoothly. The internal components aren't quite standard, but the few modifications they've been given aren't extensive, so you're familiar with the way they work and there aren't any compatibility issue.

The main problem is the power plant. Mary wants to be able to replace it with her G-element engine design when it's finally functional, but the size and shape doesn't really fit the current engine design. It takes some finesse, but you leave just enough space to replace the engine black later on. It'll require some fairly extensive work on par with severe maintenance work, but nothing on par with a full rebuild.

Soon enough, you have a full TSF in one of the research lab's hangars.

"That went better than I expected," Mary says.

"The only thing left is the operating system," you say.

>"I'll just update the current OS to the Excalibur's specs. It'll be easier."
>"We've got time. I might as well write the OS from scratch."

>>
>>31765757
"We've got time," you say. "I might as well write the OS from scratch."

Mary nods.

"I was hoping you'd say that," she says. "The operating system is also part of the Excalibur's development, so building one from scratch now will save us time down the line. All the files you need should be in the lab's database, so you can get to work whenever you're ready. There are some things I need to get from our secure storage."

"I'll be here when you're done."

You sit at one of the spare stations and call up a computer screen in your retinal HUD. You look for the current Typhoon OS in the lab's database and pull up the design checklist. You don't really need a reference point, but you do need to make sure that you don't leave anything out. Given the number of items on the checklist, there's no way you can keep track of everything in your head.

You spend a few hours going through the basics. The lab was designed for this sort of work, so most of the core code can be added just by clicking on macros. It makes things faster, but you still need to run the numbers. Mary returns just as you're done programming basic movements.

"I added some predictive software from one of Dodger's projects," she says. "You should be able to access it through your console."

"You mean an AI?"

"Just the... inspiration, I suppose you would call it," Mary says. "According to Dodger, it's impossible to create an artificial intelligence; they have to be born through chance. This code created that chance once, so I'm hoping it will do so again."

"I'll add it to the OS and cross my fingers then," you say.

It takes a few more days to get the software to the point where you can do live tests. Everything has been debugged and you've installed a standard Typhoon OS as a backup just in case. It won't be able to pilot the Excalibur, but it should be enough for a controlled crash landing. However, there is one thing that's been bothering.

You knock on Mary's office door and enter.

"Good afternoon, Julian. Or morning. I'm not too sure right now." She certainly looks like she hasn't slept in a while. "Is there anything I can help you with?"

"Good afternoon is correct," you say. "I just wanted to let you know we should be ready for field tests. And... do you have anyone else working on the code? Sometimes, I noticed some of it changed after I came back from a break."

"Oh, didn't I tell you? Dodger and his lady have free access to the lab's network," Mary says. "They oversee most of the projects and provide support as necessary. They must have modified the code during your off-time."

"I really wish you'd told me that earlier, but I guess I can live with it." As much as you don't like people messing with your work, this is Mary's private domain, so it's her rules. "Anyway, how do you want to proceed with the tests?"

"I'll have my teams handle the initial safety tests," Mary says. "You can rest for a day or two. By the way, have you thought of a name for your TSF's OS?"

You can't help but wonder if you signed similar documents to absolve the RAF of any responsibility for your untimely death in case of BETA. It's been a while since you signed those papers and you weren't really paying attention.

You get changed along side Vivian. Elaine's in the main hangar, getting her Tornado ready.

"Do you need me to do anything specific," Vivian asks as she bends over to pull her suit up her legs. "For the evaluation, I mean."

"You need to be more subtle with the misunderstandings," you say. "It's no fun if it's too obvious. And no, just operate the council as you usually do. The tech team will feed the computer some simulations."

"Understood."

The two of you walk up to the Excalibur and settle into the cockpit. There's quite a bit more room than you're used to. Behind you, Vivian activates her console.

Nerdgasming?

He already orgasmed by making the Black Widow frame the one we gonna use.

"Vivian, I'm monitoring your console from my lab," Mary says through the Excalibur's speakers. "Let me know how it feels."

"The user interface is the same as the Typhoon's, but it's faster," Vivian says. "I'm activating tactical network simulations now."

"Understood," Mary says. "Beginning tacnet simulations."

You relax and familiarize yourself with your own console while Vivian does her thing. The controls are all touch screen and it's integrated with your retinal HUD so that you can manipulate it using a completely virtual console if you want to customize the UI for combat. It's an impressive piece of work.

"Tacnet simulations successful," Vivian says. "Moving on to... cyberwarfare suite?"

"I added that in as an extra," you say. "The Excalibur has significantly more processing power than most TSFs, so I thought we should use it. The current cyberwarfare suite isn't much to look at, but it should prevent most malware and hostile intrusions. You should be able to operate it yourself."

"If you say so..."

That evaluation is quite simple. Mary tries to hack the Excalibur's systems from her console, while Vivian deals with the errors as they occur. You just sit back and watch.

Vivian's doing reasonably well, especially when you consider that Mary has direct access to the Excalibur's systems.

"We'll call the cyberwarfare suite evaluation a success," Mary says. "Move on to targeting assistance. Julian, we'll need your help for this one."

"Got it." You activate the main targeting systems and simulated targets appear in your HUD. "Ready when you are."

"I'm ready," Vivian says.

>(cont.)
>>
>>31768442
You let her do most of the work. Vivian calculates the optimal firing solutions as the targets appear and disappear and you just follow with your controls. It requires a lot of effort on Vivian's part, but her targeting is every bit as good as yours.

"Targeting assistance evaluations are satisfactory," you say. "We're moving on to combat systems." You open a channel to Elaine's Tornado. "Elaine, are you ready?"

"I'm ready and in position," she says. "How do you want to do this?"

>"Just fly observer and track my movements. I want to get a feel of this machine."
>"I want you to fly aggressor. I want to see how the Excalibur does in combat."

"I want you to fly aggressor," you say. "I want to see how the Excalibur does in combat."

"You're on." Elaine grins.

You start the Excalibur up and launch out of the research hangar. There aren't any problems so far. You have your area of operation, your weapons are all green and you've got Elaine on your sensors.

"Do you need me for anything," Vivian asks.

"No, not for this," you say. "I just want to check the basic systems."

You'll start with the assault cannons and then switch to melee. You're using the Black Widow's weapon designs, which means your assault cannons come with a bayonet and you have a sword instead of the standard European battle axe, so this will take some getting used to.

"This is Excalibur," you say. "Engaging the enemy."

Elaine's flying around the engagement zone, well within range of your radar, but she doesn't seem to have spotted you. That means the stealth systems are working. You really are piloting Europe's first true third generation TSF.

You circle around her and open fire with your assault cannon. It's a near miss, but it's enough to catch her attention. She rapidly turns around and the two of you dance in the air, shooting paintballs at each other. The base gets some new graffiti, but you fail to hit each other.

You run out of ammo and draw your swords, charging at Elaine, who draws her own battle axes. She strikes first, but you easily dodge her attack and slash her Tornado. Your sword's sheathed, so there's no damage, but it would have been a critical hit if you'd used the edge.

From that point on, you dominate the fight. Elaine's axes have more power to them and their attacks are slightly faster, but your swords have the better balance. Even when Elaine lands to deny you 3D movement, you easily evade her attacks and every one of your parries knocks her further off balance.

At long last, Mary calls an end to the evaluation.

"We can call this the Excalibur's victory," she says. "Congratulations, everyone. Europe now has the most advanced TSF in the world."

For the most part? That guy who does dirty work for MI5 and MI6.

Anyway, looks like we're doing Master Julian Reber, which is the absolute worst bad end I could possibly think of, beyond even The Day After.

So look forward to that.

'Night folks.

Thanks for running.

But a question - I thought the typhoon was europe's third generation TSF. My understanding was that excalibur was to be the 4th.

>>31769498
AHHHHHHHHH

Also, the whole laserjard that killed 1/4 of laser class beta, or the BETA reactor, or the 5 generation TSF or the G-elements we get or the BETA WORM discovered or the Missile we developed to kill the worms or the black widow info we got or the russian tsf we got, or us infiltrating and taking off with the reactor of a BETA HIVE or saving Britain and Europe as as whole from terrorists?

I mean shit.
