Welcome to Banished Quest!
You take the role of a young mage, labeled a criminal by his people and cast out into the wider world. In the last thread, you looted a store room and then began purging to ruins of the bandit menace. After clearing out the barracks, you decided to go back and interrogate a captive.

You roll your shoulders, touch your toes, and do some simple exercises in an attempt to shake some of the leadeness out of your arms and legs. You always get like this after rapidly expending large amounts of vys. Your joints ache, your neck is stiff, a migraine is gnawing away at the back of your head. Your master had once said 'That just means you need to cast more spells.' but since casting more spells typically leads to unconsciousness, you're not sure if he meant that seriously or if he was just joking.

After your satisfied that you can move without limping, you nod to your companions, and Captain Darzi. “Alright, I think it's been about an hour between all the looting and fighting. Lets check on that heavy we tied up.” Chryssa, Prof, and Fulvia nod. The Captain however clears her throat gently to get everyone's attention. “Are you really sure that's necessary? I mean, what do you hope to learn from consorting with bandits?”

You rub your chin contemplatively. “Well, I want to verify that the prisoners I sold to the Shahzadi gave me-” The Captain holds up her hands to stop you. “Wait, the Shahzadi bought slaves from an Aghtak? I find it highly unlikely that the Shahzadi would so readily flaunt the Law of her Father by conducting business with an aghtaki.” You wave a hand dismissively. “I had just saved her life, and besides she seemed fairly weak willed. That isn't the point though. The point is the bandit told me there were sixteen men in this ruin. We've killed or incapacitated twelve so far. I want to make sure he told the truth. I also want to ask him just where this... uh” You wave a hand in the air exasperatedly, searching for the name. Fortunately, the Captain provides it for you. “Baldev.” You snap your fingers. “Yes, him. I want to find out where Baldev's quarters are, since that's likely where most of the treasure will be found.”

You begin to march onward, towards the emptied storage room where you'd left the bound and paralyzed bandit. Along the way, you start to notice those glowing Rhynian lanterns. They hang freely from the walls from iron hooks, and their casing is made of some sort of thick glass. You can't really see much inside, the light inside is very intense but the light doesn't seem to be cast very far. They're obviously magical in some way, and they're not attached to any sort of power source you can see. Maybe you could try draining them of vys?

You pull one of the lanterns off of its hooks, holding it up close. It seems like it cast horribly bright light, to the point that you don't dare hold it too close to your face, but only for a few feet. It's not warm to the touch, in fact it's rather cold. As you hold it by the handle it seems to throb and pulse almost like a living thing, though that's surely impossible. You've read ancient text that discussed giving sentience to constructs, and you can only assume Fulvia is a successful example of this, but whether or not that makes them truly alive is debatable and why anyone would do that to a lantern is absolutely beyond you.

You channel water magic into that strange control gauntlet on the left forearm of your Centurion Armor. Immediately, your vision goes blue and the walls, floors, and ceiling vanish. You see the bright points of light that are your companions, Fulvia's generator practically glowing like the sun. Chryssa is also notably brighter than the first time you saw her through this filter. She's grown more powerful. Profectus has a bit of spark to him, he has the talent no doubt, but he's practically a husk. Completely devoid of vys, or nearly so. Captain Darzi is fairly average as far as Samja go, though she's still more magically powerful than Profectus.

Taking a look at the lantern, you see it sucking in the ambient vys like a sponge, but it's not truly the lantern. It's something trapped inside the lantern. Some kind of gem, you think. Or perhaps a stone of some sort. The vys it absorbed is almost immediately expended, for what you're not sure, but the light is really just a side-effect of the process.

You hoist the lantern overhead and then spike it into the ground. It cracks rather spectacularly, sending glass scattering across the floor and a blinding light blooming in the hallway. You suppose the ice you used to encase and crack the lanterns outside must of suppressed the resulting small explosion.

However, as impressive as the smashed lantern looks it's even more impressive through the lens of your vys-infused sight. Spirals of energy whirl out in every direction, rays of vys shooting every which way. They pass through you and your companions, but none of you seem harmed. Perhaps a slight contamination of your vys, but nothing to worry about. When the light dims and the motes of energy that spewed forth have all dissipated, you don't see any evidence of a stone or a gem in the wreckage of the lantern. Just shards of glass and the metal frame.

You grab another lantern off the wall, turning it over in your hands and looking for some kind of latch that you could unfasten or hatch you could open. The entire thing seems sealed rather tightly, nothing screws off or pops out. No shiny red buttons to press. You note that your companions are looking on curiously, though they haven't asked anything of you yet. You're not sure what's stranger, that you stopped in the middle of the hallway to break lanterns, or that your companions don't question it at all.

Eventually you try channeling a little vys into it, and you feel it practically rip the energy from your body. You manage to cut off the transfer before losing too much, but it was still rather unpleasant. It makes you wonder whether or not leeching the lantern would be a good idea, if it would turn into some kind of battle of wills or something.

You cast leech on the lantern in your hand, and almost immediately it kicks back. Drained as you are, you really can't manage to do anything but hold your ground. You end up just pouring vys into the spell in an attempt to turn momentum in your favor, but it laps up the energy happily. You end up just cutting off the spell, dropping the lantern, and taking a few steps back just to spare yourself the embarrassment of passing out because of an inanimate object.
>Vys Pool: (1/26) You feel moments away from unconsciousness, as if a stiff breeze would knock you out.

You glare at the lantern on the floor, which you note now glows much more strongly than it was before. Enough that the entire hallway seems just a tad brighter. Chryssa ask cautiously. “Are you okay? You look nauseous.” To which you respond with a dismissive wave. You try to take a few steps forward, but you end up stumbling and nearly fall. Fortunately Profectus catches you. Chrys drapes one of your arms over her shoulders, while Profectus takes the other. The two of them practically have to carry you towards the store room.

The Captain is the first one to ask. “What by Surya's accursed name just happened? One minute he was fine, the next he's barely cognizant.” You take a deep breath, and muster yourself to respond. “Experiment went poorly, backfired. Drained my reserves.”

Ricky might like some light in there.
>>
When you reach the rusty iron store room door, you motion for your companions to stop. You could hear the bandit calling for help through the iron door, but judging by how muffled it was you doubted you needed to worry about him hearing what you said. “Put me down, I can walk.”

Chrys and Profectus share a glance, but they do as you say. You have to steady yourself against the wall for a moment, but eventually manage to draw yourself up and stand on your own two feet unassisted. “Alright, I think I'll manage. Open the door.” Chryssa does as you'd ordered, and the door opens with a sharp, echoing whine. You march confidently inside to find the captured bandit curled up on the floor, looking at you fearfully. “I will tell you nothing, you-you camel fuckers! Don't touch me!”

He struggles as you approach, and you wonder absentmindedly how you should go about this. Typically in the past you've tried the silver tongued and fairly kind approach, but you are a little pressed for time here. You can only keep up the facade for so long.

You crouch down next to him, a kind smile on your face while you go about unfastening the straps of his helmet and removing it gently, setting it aside. He's caught off guard, and he's mostly stopped struggling for the moment. “You know, I've had a very rough day. I'm quite tuckered out, really.” He stares at you with a mix of confusion, fear, and apprehension. “So I'm not going to interrogate you or rough you up or anything like that. I'm going to introduce you to a friend of mine, and if you don't answer some of my questions, that friend of mine will pick your corpse clean to the bone and that will be the end of it.”

He struggles fiercely when you grab the back of his head and start pushing him towards your cloak, it's mainly difficult because you have to do it one handed, the other keeping your cloak open. Fortunately aid comes in the form of two glowing, almost transparent tentacles. They slide out noiselessly, wrapping their way around the bandit's throat. His screams are cut off as the tentacles contract, and pull him head first into the abyss. He's submerged in that void up to his shoulders, and almost immediately he starts struggling desperately. Eventually his kicking and flailing subsides, and you think he might be unconscious, but then it starts up again.

You decide it's probably wise to pull him out before Ricky actually kills him, so you reach in and grab him by the collar. His armor is slick, and warm. You feel something slither its way over your hand and very nearly let go, but only a moment later he's pushed out of your cloak.

The first thing you notice as he falls back is that his nose is missing, there's just a bloody hole where it used to be. His throat is also pretty badly bruised, and your hand is just covered in blood from when you grabbed his armor, which is also coated. He isn't screaming, rather he's just gasping for air and sobbing quietly. After he's composed himself somewhat he mutters out. “A-alright... alright I'll... answer whatever questions you've got.”

What will you ask the bandit?

“How many bandits were left in this facility after that raiding party left?” His eyes go slightly wide, but he answers quickly. “S-sixteen. Sixteen, counting Baldev. We've got rotating patrols though, that guard the mountain paths and watch for caravans. They shouldn't return for a few more hours yet though.” You nod your head, it seems that bandit had told you was only a half truth.

“Where is Baldev, and more importantly, where are Baldev's quarters?” He looks apprehensive, but when you spread out your cloak he practically chokes on the words trying to answer. “Baldev is down in the mineshaft with our three best fighters, trying to fight his way to the vault key. Baldev's quarters are adjoined to the barracks, but you can only get in if you have the key.” You reach into your cloak, and the man flinches, but you simply pull out the necklace you found on the corpse of the enemy vatis. “A key like this?” He stares at it for a moment, before nodding.

I wasn't part of the original band, I signed on later.” You hold up a hand to stop him. “I didn't ask for your life's story, I asked about the mineshaft.” He laughs uneasily and then nods. “R-right, well, uh. I've heard there are all sorts of horrible monstrosities down there, form the older guys. Monsters made of strips of skin, giant constructs that will rip a man's head off, they say that the descendents of some of the miners still live down there, and they've gone insane. A-also, that if you listen at the top of the mineshaft, you can sometimes hear a woman screaming. Nobody has ever been able to find her down there though.”

“Thank you, Brother. You've been most helpful.” You pat him on the shoulder in a comradely fashion and just as he's starting to look hopeful about his future you activate a drain spell. For a moment, your vision swims and you think you might feint. Then you feel a simply delightful surge of energy. You're really starting to enjoy this draining thing. Perhaps a bit too much, but you're sure it's not a big deal. It's only been one day, maybe a day and a half, and you won't have many opportunities like this for a long while.
>Vys Pool: (7/26) You're still exhausted, but at least you're not about to pass out.

The bandit isn't dead, merely unconscious. You stand up and stretch some of stiffness out of your joints. You turn to face your companions and are greeted by varying stages of shock and horror. On the one end, there's Chryssa. She stares at you completely impassive, doesn't seem in the least bit disturbed by any of the goings on. In fact, she might be impressed in a vague sort of way. It's always hard to tell with her.

Then there's Fulvia. She looks unsettled, but not really offended or horrified. You figure that, as the administrative AI of a Rhynian Research Facility, she probably saw plenty of horrible, disgusting things in her time. Especially considering what you've seen of Rhynian Experiments. Seriously, they seemed to lack any sort of moral compass.

Finally, there are Profectus and Captain Darzi. Profectus is openly horrified, not something you'd expect really all things considered. Then again he looks pretty young, and he's not much of a vatis. Probably shockingly sane all things considered, despite the stone arm. He shakes his head slightly, and ask. “Gods above, what is inside that cloak, Mik? Why are you wearing that thing? Aren't you worried it will drag you in and kill you at any moment?” Captain Darzi is obviously trying to keep her cool, but she isn't quite managing. She's fidgeting and nervous, obviously extremely unsettled.
(1/2)
>>
“Don't worry about it, Prof. Ricky-” Prof groans. “For the love of- tell me you didn't name it.” You wag a finger a him admonishingly. “It's rude to interrupt, Prof. Yes, I named him Ricky. Mainly because it's a pun on 'Voidy' in Samjan. As I was saying, Ricky and I have an understanding. I consider him a dear friend, even though I can't understand him.”

You turn your attention to Captain Darzi, bowing low and elaborately. “Now then, Captain. I leave the bandit's ultimate fate in your hands. You were the one captured and tortured after all.” She steels herself, and nods. She doesn't quite seem to trust herself to speak yet. After a moment of contemplation, she draws her sword and approaches the bandit. She raises the weapon high, and then with one heavy swing the bandit's head is severed.

You look at the corpse briefly, wondering if perhaps you should feed the corpse to Ricky. You feel like that's just a little too insane for you at this juncture, and frankly you're a little disturbed that the thought even occurred to you. No, no you're not going to feed a sentient being's corpse to a monster. Certainly not if you don't even need to hide the body. This place is basically abandoned after all.

You do loot the body though, You strip him of his armor, but leave him the dignity of his underclothes. The armor isn't just the best you've ever seen but it's composed of thick, overlapping iron plates. You'd say it's probably more protective than your Centurion Armor, but not nearly as good overall. You stuff it into your cloak, since even just the raw materials would be valuable to a blacksmith.

His weapon was shattered in the fighting, but it wasn't that great anyway. A cheaply made axe, with a shoddy wooden handle and an iron head. He doesn't seem to have anything enchanted on him, though you do find a small coin purse and a amulet composed of a piece of polished jade wrapped in twine. Probably a reminder of his home. You pocket it all.

As you walk through the halls, you take any lanterns you see. Captain Darzi absentmindedly comments. “I'll be shocked if it turns out you were banished for something besides thievery.” You laugh, and reply with a carefree shrug. “It's how I make my money, looting ancient ruins. Not like anybody else is using them.” Profectus nods in agreement. “Yeah, nothing wrong with a little looting. All of this will end up getting sold anyway, so we're putting ancient artifacts into the hands of the people. We should be given a medal.”

Of course I just hope we dont rely on Vys to save our ass everytime especially becuase it keeps us standing and is our magic source I rather take a minor wound that we could heal for like 1 vys than spending 3 to prevent it
>>
All told, you end up snagging about twenty magic lanterns, four suits of heavy lamellar armor, and fifty five silver before finally reaching the barracks. You don't immediately see anything of note, two long rows of bunk beds, a few chest here and there for personal effects, then as you journey along the wall feeling for any indentations you find one, at the very end of the barracks. Small, just a little bit larger than a coin. Perfect for the key you took from the vatis.

Gotta get that loot.

Alright folks! Afraid I need to call it here for the night. Kind of a nice little cliffhanger, I guess. About to open the vault where most of the phat loot resides.

I'll continue on Monday after my classes end. Probably around... 1300 4chan time. I'd appreciate it if people would bump the thread irregularly, every few hours, but considering we're only 17 post from autosage I doubt this thread will survive the night.

Questions, comments, concerns. Ask them here and I'll get to them later.

Also also also we should learn some alchemy we're going to be traveling alot who needs what rare ass healing herbs, potions, and poison we could make

Thank you for a ever good quest thread. So are we planning to do a full quest tommorrow or just a q&a?
>>
>We interrogate a bandit, do some looting, and the thread ends a bit early.
Shoulda added: Ricky is the baddest of bad cops.
>>
Ricky is fucking awesome, though I only have one limitation: DO NOT FEED HIM HUMAN (Or Samjan) FLESH. DON'T MAKE HIM ACQUIRE A TASTE FOR IT. Small stuff like what we just did is fine, but huge chunks? Hell naw.
>>
So should we go delving into the mineshaft?
>>
Anyone else feel that loot the barracks was a trap option?

>>31770860
no, fuck that. We're low on vys and we've been through a long "dungeon delve" already.
If we really want to, we should do it on the easy back after we go to the water temple and become a grandmaster.
Speaking of the temple, we could convince the captain to join our party if only to go to the temple till we become a grandmaster telling her that we will be able to heal her numerous scars. And who knows, maybe by then she'll want to join us permanently?

>>31769332
But what if we need to quickly hide a body?
We should put a disposal bag/bin into our cloak so that Ricky doesn't randomly throw bunch of bones out of it when we feed him and instead puts them into the bin, then we can empty it at our leisure.
>>
>>31774997
If I remember, Ricky knows what we want when we want it. Maybe he snacked on the guy's nose in order to make him talk because we wanted answers NOW and where in no mood for bullshit.
Before sending in more corpse we need to have a meeting of the minds and make it clear that feeding on humans is forbidden unless we need to play bad cop even badder cop.

oh my, look at my dubs.

Come back to us, Soma.
i will let this die anyways so that you will not have a short thread because this went over bump limit in a minute of its start.
