The Great Priests convene in their solar. The Bronze Priest leans on a pile of pillows and wheezes as he listens impatiently. The Sand Priest eats stuffed dates in the most evil way possible as he listens to the Blood Priest's report on the relics that the marauding monsters dropped in their battle. "Things in the city appear to be relatively stable," he says. "What we did for the king should buy us some trust from the crown and the freedom to exterminate other threats abroad."

"You mean you actually tried to help the king?" the Sand Priest asks. "What madness moved you to do that?"

Suddenly, the five men all turn their heads to see a giant scorpion-monster squeezing through the doorway.

"Oh, hello, Hunzuu."

"Hi," you say. "Let's talk about revenge."

> "I want to go out hunting immediately, while there's still a chance of tracking them.
> "I'm going to wait until my armor's done and my shell's hard, then head to places they're likely to have gone."

do this, but also send what trained trackers we can hire from the guilds to keep an eye on the enemies if at all possible.

Adventurer's guild owes us a favor-ish, so maybe them? Ask the priests about this.

Can we tell them to let us go alone?
Other people can't keep our pace, and they will just die because they're redshirts.

Pazuzu Discussion. What to do about the pieces of Pazuzu?

The pieces of Pazuzu are sealed inside living hosts because they can't be killed.

If we kill the host, what happens? Will the piece inside be reborn somewhere? Will is spawn on the spot? Other?

Whatever happens, we know it won't be dead. Therefore, we'll probable have to deal with it again unless we do something about it.

I vote we have the Priests build a prison/tomb to hold the Wasp-woman. Warded to fuck. No light, no air, not even her ghost can escape.

If we don't do something long term with the Pazuzu nuggets, then all we're doing is buying time until he revives and kills the world.

This is the most long term thing I can think of for now. At least, it will hold us over until we find something better.

yeah, the most we want is some trackers, I think.
For some reason I feel extremely wary of bringing allies into combat. some reason.
>>
>>31736698
what does "not stay dead" even mean?
If we kill the wasp and take her back, will she come back to life mid transit?

is that -exactly what happened- after we gave her poison stings?

Unclear. Whatever it means, we have the perfect counter to it.

Hunzuus Mercy.

We can drug her up and bring her back alive. Seal her in the Tomb so she can't.... respawn somewhere else, of let the Pazuzu nugget free to be reborn... or whatever the hell would happen.
>>
>>31736791
>Hunzuus Mercy.

So what originally looked like an horrible nerf to our poison might actually be the tool we needed to defeat an ancient eldritch horror?

I can dig that.

"I'm going to wait until my armor's done and my shell's hard, then head to places they're likely to have gone."

The Blood Priest strokes his beard. "I don't believe that these monsters acted alone. Maybe Turtak sent them in a way they could deny later. Maybe those rotten exiles from the Delta are eating us away from the inside. Or maybe Zagros is even getting involved. They would seem to be our chief competitor at the moment. So when you do find them... bring some back alive. I would extract some answers from them."

"But I can interrogate them for you! We really don't-"

"You may be a killer, Hunzuu dear, but you're not a born torturer. You on't have the heart for it."

> "Fine. I'll go alone."
> "I'd also like to bring some friends along."
> "We shouldn't keep being so paranoid without cause. If we get other cities to ally with us, there'll be nowhere for these monsters to hide."

>>31736723
>>31736698
According to Ishtar, if you kill a host, the piece will go back to Pazuzu. Aruru can only carve off pieces of Pazuzu and hide them inside hosts at a relatively slow rate. So if too many hosts die at once, that's bad. And apparently keeping too many hosts together is also not very good.
>>
>>31736845
>> "Fine. I'll go alone."
We can't risk any more of your friends.

>> "Fine. I'll go alone."
> "We shouldn't keep being so paranoid without cause. If we get other cities to ally with us, there'll be nowhere for these monsters to hide."

We can ask the various cities about helping us as we visit them.

I'd -like- to have friends along, but I really worry about them.
>>
>>31736845
>"I'd also like to bring some friends along."

I think Soul-of-Lightining would be good in this situation. We also can't take everyone, or the city will be defenseless. I think Patience is ebst defending the city.
>>
>>31736974
actually, yeah.
We can bring someone fast like soul of lightning along.

I just don't want to bring anyone who would be run down and trampled by a horde of centaurs.
>>
>>31736845
>if you kill a host, the piece will go back to Pazuzu.

Yep, defenatly speak to the Priests about some sort of Warded Tomb. Something that could even trap the spirits of the dead inside. If the magic in this setting can forcibly call forth hundreds of spirits from the underworld, there's a good chance it can trap a spirit.

If the Pazuzu nugget can be trapped in a living host, good chance it can be trapped in our Tomb. We can try anyway.

>apparently keeping too many hosts together is also not very good.

All will be housed /separately/. If we catch more, they will be stored in separate Tombs, build a safe distance from one and other.

>"Fine, I'll bring you some prisoners, but we shouldn't keep being so paranoid without cause. If we get other cities to ally with us, there'll be nowhere for these monsters to hide."
>>
I am going to just say it.

Going alone is a very poor tactical choice.

Tell the priests that we are afraid to risk more people, as everyone who fights with us generally dies. We are also worried about being mobbed.

Do they have any advice? They're supposed to be all wise, maybe they have a magic trinket that will help.
>>
>>31737009
I'm still confused.
we totally shot that pazuzu wasp up with death venom. I think it came back to life in the same body?
>>
>>31736974
>>31737004
Thirded for bring Soul. Taking some backup would be good. Someone that can keep pace and escape if things go tits up is a good choice.
>>
>>31737128
Since it's venomous itself, it's probably got some level of poision resistance. Most venomous creatures have to some degree.

It's also likely super-charged like Iltani, because of the Pazuzu nugget inside. She probably survived our venom.
>>
>>31736845
"Fine. I'll go alone."

The Blood Priest rolls his eyes, "Look, Hunzuu, I understand; I really do. You don't want to lose any more friends. But, if I may be blunt, that's what friends are for. They aren't doing anyone any favors here in the pyramid. Iltani is more than capable of defending herself, and she may be able to draw them out of hiding. Nakurtum has nobody to train now, and that damned centaur drank all of that good dark beer I was saving."

"Well... All right, I'll take him. But Nakurtum and Iltanistay home."

The Gold Priest struggles to get up and come closer to you. "Remember - don't let yourself become emotionally compromised. What we really need to do is identify the threats to us, not just indulge your thirst for revenge. If it's doubtful that you'll win a fight, do not fight! Come back here and report."

Your chitin will finish hardening in two days, and the alterations on your armor should be finished in four days.

You spend the following few days checking on the armorer's progress and spending a lot of time reviewing blood magic with Kullaa.

Rabi-Tammuz has also finished a black dress for you. It's cut for a more mature woman, and although it has layers of fringe around the hem to show off your status, it doesn't have a long train reaching back over your scorpion half. "It was a liability. Someone could have grabbed it in combat. And anyway, I was short on fabric after making this." Just as you told him to, he has sewn together a doll for Ettu's baby, complete with its own little black dress. It feels oddly lumpy inside.

Unfortuately, the pyramid's servants aren't due for another bloodletting for weeks, so you don't have the chance to practice your newest healing spells on live subjects.

> That can be solved easily enough. Go make Rabi-Tammuz cut himself.
> Go out and look for injured people in the city to practice on.
> Play it safe, practicing only the spells that don't require live targets. Also let Kullaa help plan out your future education.
>>

Question about blood magic, might have been asked before but I only just caught up on the archive.

Assuming the adorable little scorpion rips and tears her way through a large mob of soldiers and happens to end up coated in a fairly large amount of blood, would said blood be usable for casting say, a healing/regeneration spell on the fly?

Kullaa is about to give you another dry lecture on anatomy and how it relates to the mind of Aruru, but you want to learn by doing. "Let's go out and look for injured people! I can heal them, I know it!"

Kullaa is hesitant. "For free? Usually we have an arrangement not to do that. The physicians' and surgeons' guilds don't like it..." She smiles. "But how can they say no to you? You're so cute!" You weren't expecting that to be the reason why people have trouble saying no to you.

You make your way through the streets of Ligish with Kullaa on your back carrying several jars of blood, calling out to the people to bring forth anyone who is injured and needs healing. Though you've never done this before, the people trust the Savior of the City, and they praise your generosity.

A few people come to you who are afflicted with sores and fevers. Unfortunately, you don't know the spell that can help them. Kullaa has to offer them minor blessings and send them on their way.

The one injured person you can find is a burly-looking man with one arm all done up in bandages. He was wounded in the monster attack two days ago, and a deep cut on his arm has festered somewhat. He's in serious danger of losing it.

> Roll 1d6 to try to close the wound.

You unseal the clay jars of blood, pray to Aruru, and fearlessly lay your hands on the foul pustulent wound. You're afraid that you're going to mess something up again. A chill runs down your spine. The blood burns away into pink mist, and you see the living flesh around the wound start to grow...

"Eeeeeek" You cry out and draw back in fear. "What did I do?! It's covered in hair!"

The man looks back at his arm. "What? No, that's how it usually is." He's a hairy fellow. Kullaa checks the wound and sees that the infected tissue has dried up and can be safely peeled off. "Good job, Hunzuu!"

You go over the spells you already know. Kullaa is happy to help you get the fundamentals of blood magic under control. Though your'e still not a very strong reader, having her read to you helps a lot, and soon you know some of the basic precepts of the craft by heart.

> Your Blood Magic is now 2 instead of 1.

You're searching the pyramid looking for Soul-of-Lightning, and you find him where he often is, loafing around in the kitchens and making sure Nergal-Edir isn't making anything he finds tasty without letting the centaur have a piece. "Hunzuu! Good to see you! You're always in that library, it seems, and they don't like having me around there. They say I make too much noise walking on the floors." He raises an eyebrow and smirks. "Is this a custom of humans? Or of flesh-eaters? Never mind. I'll be right back!" He trots away in search of Nakurtum. A few minutes later, you hear the sounds of a brawl erupting in the pyramid, pots breaking, and tables overturning. You can't help but giggle. You think Lady Ishtar would be pleased. Tabni-Ninsun would also be rather pleased, you think, as she's the one who first explained to you the joys of manipulating men.

When you see the centaur again, armed and outfitted for a long lourney, he's sporting a big purple bruise on his cheek. "You could have just told me no, girl. I had to go easy on your Nakurtum to make sure not to kill her!" Sure he did.

as for gear: let's bring our armor, some camping essentials like pots and such, our spear and shield, and a -bunch- of javelins.

Enough javelins that we could harry that lizard indefinately until he dies. Doubly so if the javelins have poison on them.

Armour, spear and shield as standard. A quiver of throwing javelins. And a grappling hook. The hook we had before proved its usefulness.

You armor yourself in a combination of your new bronze barding for your scorpion half, your fine bronze helmet, and the breastplate you found at the ruins. You also bring a large bundle of javelins, some rope, and a grappling hook. You use a bunch of blankets to insulate a single clay ball and two jars of magically preserved blood. And of course you also bring along plenty of dried goat for you and a greater variety of dried food for the centaur. All of this weighs both you and Soul-of-Lightning down a bit, but you know you'll be glad you brought it along when you end up needing it.

Ninlil's parents live comfortably but modestly, and they don't have much to offer you. Her father is simply happy that his daughter's memory will live on in history and in the great bas-relief he carved of her inside the pyramid. However, one of Ninlil's older brothers runs after you after you leave their home. He's tall and muscular from hauling lots of stone around, but there's a definite family resemblance in the curve of his face. "Lady Scorpion! You want something? You can take this." He hands you a chisel. "We used this to carve her image in the pyramid. Put it in that bastard's heart."

Dadanum is somewhat reluctant to give up his bow to Soul-of-Lightning. He says it helps him feel like a real man, because when his father found out that he had it, he showed him respect for the first time in his life.

"Fine. Defend the city with it."

"Yes, ma'am!" Dadanum salutes you.

You hug all your friends goodbye. Nakurtum surprises you by accepting your decision to make her stay home. As you and Soul-of-Lightning depart, some common folk gather outside the pyramid to see you off. A few of them bring sick children and hold them out for you. They must have heard about your training in the healing arts.

Once the crowds are small in the distance behind you and even Patience has stopped waving to you, you try to surreptitiously pat Soul-of-Lightning on the back with your white glove. You see a brief glimpse of something he feels strongly about. The vision is in a fabulous human city, paved in white stone with golden flecks in it. You don't recognize the city. In a canopied patio, Soul-of-Lightning is reclining on a carpet and enthusiastically sucking face with a delicate human girl. This doesn't look like Turtak. Was this before the flood? You suppose that this girl must be long dead.

Soul-of-Lightning remembers hearing the rogue centaurs say that they'd be splitting up into teams to search, and he heard that the monsters fled through the north gate. He says that they're probably not in Turtak, though, because Nur-Sin the Centipede wants all of their heads.

"All the way to Turtak. Maybe beyond."

"But they're not there! They came from there! Whatever they're searching for, if it were there they'd have it already! And if I'm seen there, they'll cut off my head and send me back to the Far Country."

"Nur-Sin will spare you if I tell him to."

"How can you be so sure?"

"Because he's in love with me."

Soul-of-Lightning gets flustered. "Oh, I see how it is! You like powerful men! Well, I may not be a prince or a general, but I have something that centipede boy hasn't got. Want to know what it is? I'll give you a hint. It's two feet long."

The wind has not been kind to the tracks on the dusty trail. And if they broke away from the trail and cut across open country, you know that your chances of finding them are just about zero. You do find a village, though. You still have the sense of direction of a girl who never left Ligish for her first twelve years of life, but you think this might be the same village that offered you tribute after you chased down the giant blight demon. After galloping ahead and doubling back, Soul-of-Lightning announces that he saw a recently used firepit, but no living people. It looked like there had been a slaughter.

The two of you search the village for survivors. It looks like everyone has either fled or been cut down except for a single aged woman hiding in a hut, eating freshly roasted goat. She backs away from you and stands up with the poise of someone who knows she's probably going to die no matter what. "You're back?! Do your worst, all you can do is... oh. It's you. The Lady Scorpion. You're late. I didn't save you any tribute this time. I thought you weren't coming. There's some goat left, I suppose."

"Which way did they go?!" you ask.

"East, I think. I could be wrong. I was mostly busy hiding in a pit hoping not to be murdered."

The goat smells undercooked. Bad for her, perfect for you. It makes your mouth water.

> "I'll take some of that goat after all. Take some proper food and go to Ligish. Tell them I sent you."

"The road to Ligish is safe, if you think you can make it. Also, I'm not really a princess. I was born common. I just do what I can to protect people."

The woman offers a sad smile. "I don't think that's all you want. I heard the way your voice liked the taste of the word 'revenge.' They hurt you too, didn't they?"

"They killed my friend..."

"Give them hell, girl."
