You are Shai-tan Arbab, a former overlord. Once at the cusp of ultimate power with total domination of the known world, you have been banished to the strange, far off realm of America.

You have much to learn of this new world, but your ambition is unmatched. In the former world as well as this, you shall rule.

Last time you tentatively accepted the offer of one Samuel Goldman, a corrupt lawyer with plentiful yet shady contacts. What jobs he will offer you, you do not know. It is the first step of many in your new rise to power.

Ok, a little bit of housekeeping. Like many quests, there will be a skill system (along with a reputation system) to be added at one point. As well, I’ll create the standard pastebin for all material such as characters, story, and lore. Any suggestions shall be appreciated. Fortunately, this isn’t important for right now, as we are still in the tutorial, before shifting to phase 1.

Some may have noticed this already, but this is not the Earth we’re familiar with. This is an alternate Cold War, where tensions are at any moment ready to blow.

Feel Free to ask questions about the setting and everything.
In the mean time, have a preview of what’s in store.

---------

“So, what’ll it be?”

“It is acceptable.”

“Excellent.” Sam smiles and extends out his arm to offer a handshake. You take the hand and tacitly shake it. “Now, let’s go my office for a bit. We’ll get you some papers so you can don’t look any more suspect. That way when I get you a place to stay, we don’t get any anyone claiming you’re a squatter.”

You nod in agreement.

When you two arrive at the scene you see another man, tall, bald and well built. Sam walks past him and glances back to you.

“Frank this is our new friend.”

“New friend, this is Frank.”

>Simply nod

You decide to simply nod in acknowledgement. Frank responds with a nod as well. Still, there is a noticeable tension in the air, as if this man is unnerved by your presence. You laugh internally.

You enter the office, noticing it is more spartan than your what you’d expect from the slightly flamboyant man you’ve met. Nonetheless it is spacious and looks good, with tables made of high quality wood.

As you walk by you notice the presence of someone else. A woman-, brunette and with lenses, working on some papers, likely legal matters. “Oh yeah, this is Jessica, my secretary. Say hello Jessie.”

The young woman smiles at you and waves at you.

Before you enter Sam's office, you have a chance to respond to the woman and establish a rapport. First impressions are important, no?

As with this man Frank, you decide to nod in return. She smiles once more, before returning to her work. With that, you take your cue to enter Samuel’s office.

“Pull up a seat and make yourself comfortable. We’ve got to iron out a few things.” You do just, that, taking a seat and slightly slouch on it.

“So, Mr. Shai-tan- can I call you Shay?” You glance at Sam, who is noticeably more serious in demeanor now. You notice that even though his tone hasn’t changed, his posture is noticeable more refined. This man is sharper than you initially believed him to be; your battlefield instincts tell you it would do well not to underestimate him.

“I’ll be quick, since you seem to be the type you value your time. In exchange for taking up my offer, I can offer you money, a house, and some friends. And if you get into some trouble, you have someone who can take the heat off you. I assure you, you’d be making a very intelligent investment.”

“I suppose it was too obvious. Its not an act by the way, mind you. I really am a fun guy.” He laughs “I just know sometimes you gotta get serious. As for what exactly I need you… well, as you know I do some, er, extra legal activities.”

You laugh and Sam adjusts his tie; probably a reflex on his part.

“You see.” He begins,” Those people yesterday were sent by a client that didn’t like the deal I offered him. That man is a questionable businessman that’s selling a couple things on the side. The DEA, the enforcers, they don’t like that. They were putting pressure on him.”

“And he came to you instead. But he didn’t like what you offered him and tried to force you into a better deal on the count of your life. Which he got away with because you were ‘careless’, as it was.”

Sam laughs nervously. “Yeah….So, I need you to pay a visit with to a couple people, get them to, er, re-negotiate a deal.”

“Do-able. Give the directions.” You reply. You understand what must be done. Vassals must be cowed into their place.

“Nice. You know, you look like you and Frank would get along. However, before you go, tell me ‘bout that magic you do? Any specialities you’re good at?”

I personally prefer both earth and water to the others.
Earth lets you build fortifications, rapidly erect shields, tunnel, and typically buff strength. Not to mention sense vibrations to locate beings
Water lets you drown people, or desiccate them, snatch vapor from the air to create your own supply of pure drinking water that hasn't been tampered with, is associated with blood magic, etc.

When you exit the door, Sam visually deflates and sighs in relief. “Why do I get the feeling this man is going to be more trouble than he’s worth?” He asked himself, before slamming his head into the desk, causing papers to fly and pens to roll off.

Face firmly planted in mahogany wood, the lawyer pressing a button on an intercom. “Jessie, get me a drink.”

“The usual?”

“To visit our vassal I imagine?” You say as you enter the vehicle. It is your second time in such a thing, but you are still amazed with its utility. You make a mental note of getting one as soon as possible, and to learn how to use one.

“Heh, vassal. I like that word.” Frank mutters to himself, before replying. “But yeah, we’re gonna visit local businessman Conrad T. Hamilton. Guy runs a couple fast food joints with a couple ‘side businesses’. Drugs, racketeering, smuggling that type of things.”

“That sounds like a stable setup.” You don’t know much about any of the things this man, mentions, but you assume it to I assume something mu

“Yeah, he made the classic mistake of not paying his taxes. Forgot to pay his taxes and now the IRS, and the DEA are on his ass and his rivals are trying to edge him out of his territory.”

“And its all been spiraling out of his control. So, he’s been getting twitchy and attacked the boss.”

“And thus we’re here to put him in his place.”

“Yep, shake ‘em down, tell him to calm the fuck down. If he gets out of line, bring ‘em back to my boys place for a bit of ‘discipline’. Gotta be careful though. This guy still gotta lot of people watchin’ him.”

>A cornered rat is still a rat

“A cornered rat is still a rat.” You reply with a hearty chuckle. “Run a spear through it and it dies either way.”

Frank roll his eyes. “Oh aight, tough guy. got a spear with you right now?”

“No, I’ve a lance.” You say, referring to your arc lightning. Frank doesn’t get the reference, and merely shakes his head.

After 10 minutes of driving, the car pulls up to the destination. A large, two story house in what is obviously an upper class suburb. The neighborhood is quiet and peaceful, with not a soul in sight.

The door opens, with Frank now wearing a ski mask and black gloves. You exit as well, no where near as stealthily dressed, although on Frank’s insistence, you agree to wear a similar pair of black gloves. His talk of ‘fingerprint detection’ leaves you on edge; it was something you never thought would be in usage.

“Now, we’re gonna go in through the back and pick the lock. Sneak in nice and easy, before pullin’ up on our guy.” Frank whispers to you.

Sneaking has never been your forte; you’ve always prefered to be in the frontline, especially in battle. Be that as it may, you decide to follow the person who has the most experience.

As you two begin to make you way back, Frank notices something. One of the nearby houses has turned on their lights.

“SHIT! Someone might have found us.” Frank whispers angrily, before pointing to one of the nearby houses. “Fuck it, lets get this done, if we’re lucky they’ll leave us alone.”

The man quickly makes his way to the lock, picks in hand.

Before that, she calls out to someone in her house. “Steven! Burglars!”

You turn back to Frank, scowling at him. “Let me deal with this.” Frank then lets go of your arms,, flinching pain. “Are you… burning?” He asks, before his eyes widen.

You’re arms are now wreathed with flames.

“What the hell are you?” He asks, overcome with shock. You grin at his response.

------------

You throw a small fireball at the feet of the woman, enough to stop her in her tracks. The low intensity of the flames ensures that it goes out almost immediately on impact

You walk up the woman, the flames on your body increasing in heat and intensity every step of the way. As she turns to you she finds herself frozen in fear, and sweating bullets from the heat.

Wreathed in flames, you lean in to her personal space, the flames warping your visage into something otherworldly at best.

“I don't know if you noticed, but I'm on fire.” You begin. The woman dumbly nods her head. “Would you like to be on fire?” You ask, smiling generously. The woman shakes her head in response.

“No? Then I wasn't here.”

“Y-yes.” She meekly replies.
“Go.”

As each word passes you increase the intensity of the flames, from a dull read to a brilliant white, all the while taking care not to actually burn the woman.

Upon the last command, she dumbly yet quickly nods in agreement, before turning around and attempting to return home. As she turns, you put out the flames, creating a huge cloud of smoke which you use to cover your own return.

Frank, all this time, has been standing in shock and confusion, although his stoic nature doesn’t mean show it as much as Samuel did.

You cackle at his confused and shocked expression.

I can't wait till the secret cabal of the magickal masquerade tries to crack down on this flagrant public use of magic by an unlicensed sorcerer.

He'd love it most likely. Its a potentially easy way to even the odds against the federal government and eliminate the competition- if said sorcerer is loyal.

Do we know any necromancy?
>>
>>31725265
If it makes you feel better, Pablo Escobar is just getting his start.

I haven't decided that yet. I feel like necromancy will just be OP in the Cold War, as you can just raise thousands of bodies, equip them with rifles, and ignore logistics for the rest of your campaigns. Feel free to prove me wrong or find some way to balance it out.
>>
>>31725356
how about for every certain number of skelies we have to designate a commander unit to mitigate the control instead of just instantly summoning 10,000 skeletons
>>
>>31724952
>Well then, shall we?
But add on
>Or would you like to gawk some more?
>>
>>31725356
well, the way I see it, necromancy requires some level of a hivemind, meaning that you can only raise so many at a time before you start losing control of them. Also, a skellington/zombie would:
A) not be dextrous, nor intelligent, enough to fire and reload a rifle
B) not brace itself properly, and so would be either INCREDIBLY innacurate, or prone to knocking themselves on their asses.

They'd be melee combatants in a war of rifles and bombs.

their advantages would be:
A) not alive, so extremely hardy. can take really any number of bullets, short of literally tearing it to pieces (magically controlled zombies, not virus, so none of that "shoot the head" business)
B) be very numerous, and practically self replenishing.
C) not particularly care about weather and other conditions. in other words, we could invade russia in the winter, without giving a fuck.
>>
>>31725524
mass necromancy doesn't even interest me. it's too easy. lots of quests have used it. this one can be different.
>>
>>31725459
Possible, although that runs the issue of finding designated commander and managing them.

>>31725524
Excellent points. With this, we have excellent scouts and watchdogs, able to survey a large amount of territory, as well as have a cheap, replenishable army.

On the other hand, no usage of firearms severely limits their battlefield capacity. At the same time, a couple bombing runs would decimate zombie/skeleton troops.
>>
>>31725636
how about regular skelies are just puppets but a commander would require a bound soul either easily maipulated or the soul of a strong/powerful individual to be bound to it for it to be more than just a better made puppet.
>then either force to soul to bow to our will or give itself willingly
>>
>>31725629
I figured it'd be best used as a scare tactic. supplement our main army with it.

Think of it this way, would you shoot at the 900 men with guns, or the 100 skeletons charging you with swords?
>>
>>31725713
>>31725724

I will take these into account.

>Well then, shall we?

“Well then, shall we? Or would you like to gawk some more?” You nonchalantly say to Frank while gesturing at the door.

“How. The. Fuck. Did you. Do that?” He whispers at you.

“I’m special.” You dismissively remark.

“No seriously.” Frank begins, before you cut him off. “I can do many things. Let us leave it at that for now. We’ve a job to do.” Frank sighs and then shakes his head. “Fine. But I want answers at one point.”

“We shall see.”

The two quietly enter the spacious house. There appears to be no one home so far, as the area is calm and quiet.

The search for Hamilton is swift. Room after room is checked, albeit with the stealth necessary to avoid making another rukus.

After sweeping the first floor, the two decide to enter a room with a large door. Process of elimination ensures there is a likely chance it the man is in here.

Frank grabs the doorknob and whispers to you. “You wanna go check it out or me?”

“I shall enter.” You offer, to which Frank replies by opening the door.

As you enter the room, ever vigilant of your target, you feel metal grazing upon your head, and hear the sound of a gun cocking. (Not that you recognize it)

“Mind telling me what you’re doing on my property at this late at night unintended?” A new voice asks.

“We’re visiting.” Replies Frank, in turn brandishing a pistol at the man.

“One move and I kill your friend.” The man tersely states. The grip on his gun is tight, and the scowl on his face informs you two that he means business.

“You, tell me why you’re here. Are you here to kill me?!”

“Am I to presume you are a Mr. Hamilton?” You ask, deciding to humor the man and not fry him here.

“Thats what my paper say.” He replies.

“Wonderful.”

You have found your target, even though he is moments away from killing you. How do you react?

no, pretty sure he'd be too busy trying to put out his burning face
Think of it this way.
you're pointing a gun at someone and your face spontaneously combusts, causing you to lose vision, and extreme pain.

Even if he does fire, it'll be extremely innacurate.
Though, odds are, he'd be too busy with the excruciating pain of a burning face.

Light his pants on fire. Flames provoke an instinctual reaction of fear whenever they're near somebody, no matter how hardened they think they are. It's dangerous to make him drop his gun, but safe enough that he won't be seriously hurt before we put it out and chokehold him.
>>

>Even if he does fire, it'll be extremely innacurate.

The barrel is physically touching our skull. point blank.
remember that scene in the matrix? dodge this?

This is why we dodge faster than he can pull the trigger instead of standing there like a stupid and attacking him causing him to pull the trigger

>A twitch would include arm, body, wrist, and fingers.
It takes a centimer of a twitch to pull a trigger. if all his muscles twitch thrice as much he would still kill us if he is holding the barrel to our skull

Hair it is!

You snap your fingers. Nothing immediately happens, but Hamilton grips his gun even tighter. “I’m not fuckin aro-- AH!”

The man screams in pain upon realizing what is happening- his hair has been set on fire.

In his moment of pain, you take advantage and quickly put your fist in his stomach, punting him across several meters into the wall, leaving spider cracks in your wake.

Afterwards, you blast him with water to douse out the flames- Sam would get angry if he died.

“Damn son.” You hear Frank remark. “Fucking magic.”

“Bring him down, our job’s not done till the delivery is finished.”

Most of it isn't *that* different. Although there are a few changes here and there.

well, one of the options we came up with was to learn some about this world, earn our fake papers and enough money for a plane ticket for some third worlds country with a bunch of warlords. Become a local warlord and start conquering the fun way. So, not that much money actually needed for that
>>
>>31737806
Well that *is* one option, but you'd likely still need money if you're going to develop said country in order to build up a military and expand.

Although there is the always the corporation or the politician route, among other things.
>>
>>31737882
Oh yea, tons of options. Go politician and get elected to high office. (if only by manipulating your opponents to make sure you are the lesser of two evils from the two candidates people are allowed to vote for)

Go megacorp stealing tech from other corps and assassinating their leaders with magic (everyone KNOWS magic is impossible, rotten luck for him to have been hit by lightening/hail).

Climb up government ranks (either civil, military, and secret service) and perform a coup.

Join/start a mercenary unit and build up power until you can start conquering countries.

Pretend to be jesus or muhammad reborn and start a theocracy with you as the prophet.

so many options to choose from...
