You sit in the shade of your favorite spot, a tree only a scant few hundred feet from the sand and water. The combination of a gentle breeze coming off the ocean and the sound of the waves breaking on shore are the most soothing things in the world for you. On most days you would normally skip out on your chores to come nap at this spot, only to be dragged back by your little sister. Speaking of which, you can hear her approach now.

“Hector! What are you doing here? You almost gave mom a heart attack when she went to check on you and you weren't in bed!” You little sister, Camille, shouts at you when she sees you. She's a young girl of only 10 years, with blonde hair. Sometimes you feel like she worries about you a bit too much. She runs up to you, shouting in hysterics. She stands over you, barely taller than you while you slouch against the tree. You can see her begin to tear up a bit as she looks at you.

“We were all scared when you collapsed last night at The Bind,” she chokes out as she begins to sob openly.

How do you respond to her?

You glance up at Camille before returning your gaze back out towards the sea.

“You know I can't relax at home, Camille. The noise from downstairs bothers me too much to relax.”

Camille calms down a little bit, knowing your preference for this spot. She openly stares at your arms, still quite red from going through The Bind in the manner that you chose.

“Mom's still made at you,” she finally says

“I know,” you respond staring out at the water.

“So how are you feeling? You look like you hurt,” she says, concern coming back into her voice.

Your arms ache in a manner that you didn't know was possible, every movement an exercise in agony. Of course, there's no way you would admit that to anyone, least of all Camille in case she were to worry more.

“I'm fine, Camille, you don't need to worry about me,” you say, trying to relax a bit, “more importantly, don't you need to help Ross and Nelle prepare for the evening crowd?”

Camille panics for the briefest moment but then catches herself, putting on a face of indignation.

“Mom told me to make sure you were alright,” she says plopping herself onto the ground next to you, leaning on your arm. Her weight, as small as it is, is enough to make you see stars from the pain of her pressing into you. Still, you maintain a face of utter calm, not daring to show the slightest bit of pain.

“What are you doing?”

“I have to make sure you are alright, so I'm gonna stay here with you,” she says.

Her breathing soon becomes shallow as she passes out against you. Despite the pain, you find yourself unable to disturb her once she settles in, and soon pass out yourself.

You wake up to the setting sun's light being reflected into your face off of the water, Camille still passed out at your side. You give her a gentle shake on the shoulder, noting that your arms hurt much less now than they did before.

She wakes up and looks up at you, still a bit sleepy. She soon realizes the time and panics. She attempts to drag you to your feet. Although you are feeling a lot better now, her tugs on your arm are still quite painful. You get up, not wanting to upset her any further and head back with her. On the way, you can almost feel the stares of the townsfolk on your back. Eventually you see a certain spoiled asshole standing in the road, waiting for you with his two goons. From his belt hangs a pair of shiny new revolvers.

“So here comes the knucklehead. What's the matter, too poor to afford a real tool for The Bind?” The snot talking to you is Vin, the mayor's sun. Even since you were kids he's been a pain your ass. The goons at his side are Rick and Will, two of the most spineless idiots you've had the displeasure of meeting.

also we obviously performed a binding of power (item familiar?) on our hands. even though normally a tool of sort is bound. probably either a weapon, or a tool of trade for a craftsperson

I am guessing that prick over there, being the mayor's son and rich (taunting us about poverty) has bound those shiny guns he is wielding.

“Unlike you, Vinny, I don't have a particular need to overcompensate for my own shortcomings. I'm fine with what I've been given,” you say, mocking Vin. It takes him a moment to catch on to what you're saying, although when he finally does his face turns bright red. He reaches down for his pistols, but you're faster on the uptake than he is.

By the time his fingers have found purchase on his pistols you have already closed the distance between the two of you. All he can do is stare wide eyed at you as you swing for his face. Your fist connects with his chin, knocking him over and putting him into a daze. Despite the pain caused by moving your arms, you find the feeling of knocking Vin flat onto his ass to be satisfying enough to offset the pain. You call to Camille to follow you as you walk over the concussed Vin. Behind you Will and Rick panic over what they should do with Vin.

Soon you arrive home with Camille, your family's tavern. With a deep sense of dread, you head inside, mentally bracing yourself for the tongue-lashing that your mother would inevitably give you.

Inside, you can see that the night rush has already begun, the familiar sound of a rowdy crowd filling the room. As you approach the bar to talk with your older brother Ross, you feel a hand grasp your ear and pull you towards the back of the tavern. You go along with it, already prepared for your fate.

Your mother turns you to face her and begins her standard array of motherly guilt-tripping, shouting about how she was worried about you and asking where you have been. Her tirade is cut short by some distinct shouts coming from the bar. You can't make out what is being said, although from the voices themselves you can tell one of them is a man. The room falls into silence before you hear the splintering of wood.

What do you do?

You rush back out to the main room to investigate the commotion, deciding that anything that can silence the usual crowd must be up to no good. You see a man towering over a woman, a massive ax in his hands, the head imbedded into the bar. He stares wide eyed at a woman sitting next to where the ax imbedded into the wood. She puts down the mug she's holding and stands. Her complexion matches the bar that she was just sitting at, a rich brown.

She glances back down at the ax before looking back at the man holding it. You can hear her speak with a very soft voice, before she draws a wide curved blade. All you can hear is a metallic note through the air before she turns and leaves the building. You look back at the man, who seems to be frozen in place. You walk up to him slowly, although the vibrations of your nearing footsteps are enough to dissemble the jigsaw puzzle that is the man that the woman has left. You hear the distinctive creaking of wood soon after the man falls apart.

“Everyone, out of the building!” You hear Ross yell. Following his advice, you rush out of the tavern, grabbing a few people on your way out that were slow to respond. Just as the last few people make it out the building shudders one final time to a light wind and collapses.

A few days later at the town hall you sit amidst a meeting, along with the rest of your family. Nelle sits with her Fiancé while the rest of the family sit together.

“It is decided then,” the mayor says, “someone must find this scoundrel and bring them to justice!”

“I will do it, I will hunt down this criminal and make them pay for their crimes,” shouts Vin, standing upright.

Sickened by this latest attempt to be a glory-hound, you slip out of the meeting and head towards the exit. Standing between you and the exit is Ross, somehow managing to maneuver there before you could.

“You're going after her, aren't you? You never were one to leave things to lie, Hector,” he says.

>>
“I don't know what you're talking about, I just felt the need to get some fresh air,” you say, feigning innocence. Although you fully intend to pursue the mystery swordswoman, you have one final thing you wanted to accomplish in town. Rumor has it that the mayor's wife has a thing for younger men, although trying to verify this has been impossible. You figure that at this junction you have nothing to lose, however, and decide to go for it.

You stride out of the mayor's manor an hour later, satisfied but deeply disturbed. Although she was quite attractive for her age, and was quite willing to “meet” with you, you feel as if you lost a part of yourself in the exchange, as well as having a deep need to cleanse yourself physically and mentally.

Burying the memory as far as you can from your conscious mind, you head towards you relatives' residence, the place your family has been staying since the tavern was destroyed. You pack away some extra changes of clothes as well as some supplies before leaving, everyone else still out and about. The only hint you leave as to your whereabouts is a small note left in the kitchen, saying that you'll be back soon.

You don't have too much to go on in your pursuit of the mystery woman, but you know that there is only a single road leading in and coming out of town, so she must have traveled down it at some point.

As you travel along the road you come across what looks to be a stagecoach being robbed.

What do you do?

You scan the scene trying to gain an understanding of the situation. It seems a group of bandits have surrounded a stagecoach, intent on taking the contents for themselves. You decide to sneak up on them and attempt to force them to disarm and take a reward for yourself.

The man closest to you wields a coach gun, and you take the liberty of taking him hostage by placing one arm over his throat, fingers pointed at his windpipe while the other arm grasps his trigger arm.

“Everyone, drop your weapons and this man lives,” you shout out to the rest of the bandits. There is a slight pause as they look to each other to comprehend the situation before they turn and fire on you and your hostage. The man performs well as a shield for the hostile bullets as you hide behind him. Once the volley has stopped you drop the sack of flesh and lead that was once a man to hide behind a nearby tree.

You seem to have found yourself in a bad situation.

There are 5 other men left, each armed with some sort of firearm, although none of them seem to be Bound to them judging from their skill level.

I need 7 rolls of 3d10.
>>
Rolled 3, 9, 2 = 14

>>31722161
do you want them to be from different people or should we roll 21d10 at once?
>>
Rolled 3, 6, 4 = 13

>>31722161
ATATATATATATATATATATATA!
>>
Rolled 4, 6, 9 = 19

>>31722161
>>
>>31722195
different people, it makes it easier for me to keep track of things.
>>
Rolled 1, 3, 8 = 12

>>31722161

Rolled 1, 1, 6 = 8

>>
>>31722278
aw
>>
Alright, writing.
>>
>>31722278
dammit, sorry guys.
>>
>>31722306
Are you taking the combined values or using the individual dice in some way?
>>
>>31722399
I take the sum of each roll. Individual 1's and 10's mean nothing.
>>
>>31722424
What about criticals? I know that its next to impossible to get a 30 or a 3 on these rolls, but it could happen, Deniable Assets Quest got a 3 once.
>>
>>31722568
I rolled a three in bone mage quest
>>
>>31722598
>>31722568
I don't do strict crit fails, but a nat 3 will result in Bad Things™ happening. It won't fail your roll, but you might wish it had.
>>
By the way, very nearly done writing this update. It will be the last for the night.
>>
>>31723199
Our character gets shot a lot and dies, doesn't he

At least he didn't go out a virgin.
>>
>>31723199
Remember to archive

Rolled 8, 9, 2 = 19

Saucy, you just regurgitated the last update at us.

Saucy pls.

>Once the volley has stopped you drop the sack of flesh and lead that was once a man to hide behind a nearby tree.
in the future, toss it at enemies rather than dropping it
>>
You take a moment to collect yourself behind you cover, the sounds of waves breaking upon the shore filling your mind. The mental image of the wave from your youth brings to you a sense of calm, which you feel resonate into your fists, soothing away the remainder of the ache of the Bind. When the volley of lead subsides for the briefest moment, you charge out, acting almost entirely on instinct. Although you've fought with just your hands for most of your life, now you feel very different. For the first time, you feel truly alive, the risks of battle bringing a deep seated sense of joy into your soul, regardless of the outcome.

You move across the battlefield like a vicious storm, upending the bandits with simple but heavy strikes, feeling the energy move through you as if you were waves in the vastness of the ocean. With each blow you feel more force behind your strikes as your zeal for battle rises. By the time you get to the last bandit you feel as if you are a force of nature, an unstoppable force to be feared. You change your stance slightly as you attempt to strike him, your body acting on instinct rather than conscious thought. Your new strike only glances him, however that alone is enough to disrupt him long enough to get back to his ally that you knocked over previously, still struggling to get his wind back. In the blink of an eye you are in front of him, arm raised and ready to cleave him in two. You miss your mark in your over-zealousness and instead only take off an arm.

The next man seems to be almost on his feet again, which you take as a sign of him being ready to strike down again. This time you show no mercy and attack him with all your viscous fury. You yourself can hardly keep track of your fists as they fly towards the bandit, striking various parts of his body as if you were a hurricane come ashore. Your final blow reduces his ribcage into a soup of meat and ground bone.

The rest of the bandits flee from you in terror, frightened by the ease of which you tore through them with.

You struggle to regain your composure, although you eventually succeed. The stage coach operator seems terrified of you as you approach the carriage at first, although soon becomes amicable when he sees that you have calmed down. As thanks for your assistance he offers you a ride to the next town, along with his current charge.

I don't know what you mean, anon. In all seriousness, sorry about that. It happens sometimes.

Anyway, Q&A.
>>
>>31723447
Will combat normally have multiple rounds, or will it generally be decided in one pass?
>>
>>31723510
It will normally have multiple rounds, based upon the quality of the enemies as well as what you use on them.
>>
>>31723554
is it possible to be attacked in the middle of doing combo? More generally, how is defense handled?
>>
Rolled 8, 10, 6 = 24

>>31723447
>I don't know what you mean, anon.
You cannae hide from me.
>>
>>31723640
The possibility of being attacked in the middle of a combo is dependant on your rolls. Since this was the first instance of combat DCs were very low, and consecutive successes will boost the strength of your attacks. Consequently, shit will suck if you have consecutive failures. Also, in the future you may learn techniques that focus on defense and counters.
>>
>>31723749
Does momentum transfer from one round to the next?
>>
>>31723820
Yes. Don't feel the need to use up all your momentum in each round.
>>
>>31723862
Gotcha. That's all the mechanics questions that I had.

Thanks for running
>>
>>31723903
You're welcome. My twitter is https://twitter.com/SaucyQM

I also run Bone Mage Quest, although that is a much different flavor that this quest is, but if you like my writing then you may like that quest.

>>31723447
What is The Bind?
>>
>>31724074
Thank you for reminding me, anon. The Bind is a ritual that everyone on the continent takes part in as a passage into adult hood. Basically the participant places the tool of their choice into the flames created by burning the resin of a tree that has been impregnated with a special mineral-like material. The flames then soak into the item and the participant is to then pull the item out of the flames. The energy absorbed by the tool is shaped by it and then transfered into the participant, "tempering" their Spirit. As a result of this, the user experiences a number of base physical enhancements as well as the capacity to learn to wield their tool with legendary proficiency. The more one uses their tool the greater the base benefits are as well as the overall skill level of the user in regards to using the tool.

The most commonly Bound item is a lance or spear, to the point of becoming a sort of religion in itself. The religion is based around a lance user so skilled that it is claimed he could create canyons with a single swing of his weapon.
>>
>>31724225
So did our protagonist bind his arms or his body in that ritual?
>>
>>31724312
Yes, he Bound his own arms instead of an actual tool, and is the first such recorded incidence of such.
>>
>>31724361
Don't people use their arms all the time?
Like for holding things and stuff?
Is this a massive loophole we've discovered, or does "using" only count when it's for killing?
>>
>>31724361
can you only use the binding ritual once?
>>
>>31724389
No one has thought to go through the binding using their own body as the tool until now. At least, as long as recorded history has been a thing. But Usage in this case will refer to combat instances only, I'm afraid.

>>31724417
Once someone has become sufficiently skilled with their tool from the initial Bind they may undergo a secondary Bind for a tool that is similar to their initial one. In the instance for you, the MC, your secondary bind will be for another part of your body, either your legs or your torso/back, which will further define your fighting style.
>>
>>31723409
>viscous fury.
great quest, typo made me laugh.
>>
>>31724707
That's not a typo, our fury is so furious it literally has physical form.
>>
>>31724775
>>31724707
Spellcheck can only do so much when you miss spell a word such that your error is a real word. In a way, though, it fits.
>>
>>31724775
note to self: do not ask >umad? of MC
