Welcome to Academy City. The time is late afternoon, the weather isn’t quite straining and the date is August 9.

You are Kyril Torikov, ‘Level 2’ Telekinetic Child Error and you wished you had laser eyes right about now. The object of your attention was a small postcard of Academy City. It wasn’t just any old postcard however. On the other side of the picturesque photograph was a bunch of lines and text that looked more at home on an application form than a postcard. Given that this was the THIEF Membership Application form it fit. It doesn’t make the whole test any less tedious though. What was it with THIEF and postcards anyway?

The reason you were attempting to set the piece of paper alight with your mind in an attempt to find some answers was because the other occupants of the room were currently occupied with themselves. You were sitting in your girlfriend’s hospital room. She ate a bullet this morning and made the one responsible most assuredly dead. She was also talking to the other two occupants of the room, namely Saten and Uiharu, your acquaintances. If you didn’t know better they almost looked like friends. You must have been spending ages staring at the damn thing because it was Asuka’s voice that broke your concentration.

“Dear, are you quite alright?” she asked.

She probably noticed you staring at a piece of paper. Your response?

No one has to know that you are consorting with a questionably legal organisation and especially not the Judgement officer named Uiharu sitting in the room. Quickly you put it away before anyone had a chance to take a better look.

“It’s nothing, just a bit of extra credit work is all,” you easily reply.

“Then colour myself surprised. I would not expect a delinquent such as yourself to be so devoted to their academics,” Asuka admitted.

“So what is it?” Saten asked.

“It’s a puzzle,” you replied, “that I’m going to solve by myself thank you very much.”

Saten seemed deflate somewhat at your refusal. She was probably going to try and solve it for you. That would have ruined the point of the exercise if you weren’t actually lying your pants off again. A few more moments of harmless chatter continued before a nurse came in to notify the three of you that visiting hours were over. It would be improper of you to stay, as Asuka put it, but it wouldn’t stop you from returning to pick her up tomorrow afternoon.

With that taken care of, your afternoon beckoned. It looked like Saten and Uiharu was just going to goof off for the rest of the day and the former did mention something about money earlier. Putting your work hours in could also be a good idea but you had yet to figure out who was trying to kill your boss. Or you could just go home, get some rest, reading or whatever done.

You decided to head to work. Saten and Uiharu parted ways with you at the hospital. It took a surprisingly short amount of time for you to wheel yourself to School District 17. Maybe you should invest in some wheels, like a non-motorised scooter, or in-lines or something once you got out of the wheelchair. It’d certainly save you some travel time.

Your arrival coincided with a gunshot. Squashing your urge to simply leap out of your wheelchair, you wheeled yourself to cover as soon as possible. Another shot rang out, then another, and another. Realising that you weren’t in any danger at the moment you wondered if your boss was. You found him out back with his shotgun, picking off steel targets about twenty metres out. They were vaguely human shaped and were set to move about random left and right across the range. Once all targets were down they reset, but not before Number 3 noticed you.

“Hey how’s it going?”

He safely secures the weapon before slinging it over his shoulder.

“If you’re looking for some work, well there’s really nothing right now that comes to mind unless you want to fill in more forms,” he scratched his chin, “I suppose I could introduce to welding or something.”

Your eye was still on his shotgun though.

“Oh yeah, I suppose you could do some target shooting if you’re up for that,” he noticed your staring, “I’m probably the only guy you know that legally owns a gun.”

What was that phrase again? Once bitten twice shy? Perhaps you were developing an aversion to guns ever since that day. Regardless of your reasons you chose engineering, it sounded constructive. With the shotgun still on his shoulder, your boss led you to a familiar shed to get some materials. It’s mostly scraps of metal tubing, clamps and the kind of panoply you’d never think would go together so well.

“We’re going to make a drill,” he said, “And not just any old drill.”

You reserved judgement until you started assembling the frame. It was a cube shaped rig that held a drill in the middle. The legs and supports ensured it was stayed centred, and here you were introduced to the fine art of alignment. Your telekinesis came in handy here. Then there was the welding, which you were sure you didn’t screw up too badly either since it was your first time actually handling the torch. As much as telekinesis would have been useful, Number 3 insisted you learn by hand first before you started experimenting with your power. He wasn’t exactly a telekinetic himself so it was not like he could teach you.

That was how you spent the rest of your afternoon. A glance at the finished product and you posited that with a little bit of adhesives this could be attached to walls or other such surfaces. By the time you got home, you were pleasantly exhausted. A quick dinner after a hard day’s work and you settled in for some reading right before bed.

I have to wonder if the multitasking wouldn't be more useful than newton. Hittin harder is cool and all, but how many times have we actually needed to hit harder more than we've needed to TK multiple things at once?

It's not the same thing.

Right now, Kyril only has one TK 'hand'. Multitasking gives Kyril more 'hands' with which to manipulate the world. Newton makes Kyril's one 'hand' stronger. Because TK is just raw force, making that hand stronger would also make it faster.

Multitasking is do more.

Newton is do it faster/stronger.

The time is now morning, the weather is pleasant and the date is now August 10.

You must have fell asleep reading at some point last night, given how there was textbook over your face. At least you didn’t drool in your sleep. These books were on loan to you after all. Lifting it off your face elicited a wince of pain and you dropped it back down on your face. Ouch, Newton was right, gravity was a bitch. Your breakfast consisted of toast and another dose of painkillers. You hoped you weren’t going develop any addictions.

Asuka wasn’t going to be released until later today so you had your morning to yourself. That didn’t stop her from emailing you a document regarding the various companies you could invest in however. It was a medium sized list with more foreign companies than domestic ones. Studying your options might be a good idea.

Another great idea was getting in touch with Kaoru. With the video she captured, letting her have free reign with that was just asking for trouble. The last time she took a photo of you and that ended up as a two-page spread in Nunotaba’s manga. However if you didn’t mind the fallout, then perhaps it’d be nice to spend your time in the company of friends. Or you could continue reading like you were some kind of nerd.

You considered investing, but then you recall that your financial adviser, Asuka, was currently not with you. It might be wise to hold off on that before you lost everything and the kitchen sink to a bad investment. The thought of going out and amusing yourself with your friends did cross your mind but then you couldn’t enjoy your favourite arcade games in a wheelchair too much. Thus you resigned yourself to more reading. But before that, perhaps it was procrastination, you called up Kaoru.

“Yes Torikov-san?” she greeted.

“Hey I’m just calling to inquire about that video.”

“Oh,” you heard some keyboard sounds, “Do not worry about it Torikov-san, the view counter has just broken one million this morning. Is that all?”

“Yes,” you trailed off.

It was too late, you were too late. Numbly you hung up and retreated in to a corner with your book.

This really wasn’t your thing you decided. Reading was nice an all but the goddamn physics textbook wasn’t fun at all. Why do you even need to know about imaginary numbers? How the fuck were they relevant to applied physics, things that happened in the “real” world. You do manage to go through a useful materials science section though.

By the time lunch arrived, you’ve just about had it with reading the damn book for the day. Since you were at home, maybe it’d be a good idea to make some food for Asuka. What cookery shall you attempt?

Hospital food was tasteless, bland, and healthy. It probably something Asuka would get sick off pretty quickly. That was why you were going to cook her the best fucking lunch ever. The first indication that anything was wrong was when you almost cut your finger dicing onions. Thankfully it only took a bit of your nails that you were going to trim down later anyway. Then your pot boiled over creating an ungodly curtain of steam. This in turn set off an oil fire in the pan you were warming up. With a whoosh, a pillar of flame rose up and erased most of your eyebrows from your face before settling in to a comfortable blaze. The combined particulates and heat eventually set off the fire alarm, drenching you and everything in the kitchen in nice smothering white foam. You slowly exhaled. Take-out it is.

Ignoring the snickering of some of your dorm mates, you went out and got some lunch. Seeing as yesterday was curry, you decided on some pie. Asuka did not question your lack of eyebrows, instead raising her own, as if taunting you for your lack. Ignoring her blatant show of possessing eyebrows, you offer her lunch to which she easily agrees. Now while her defences were down, you could probably try and feed her. Or you could be asking her about the list of companies she sent you. Either one was a valid course of action.

Hoping to distract her further you enquire on the list of companies she had assembled for you.

“Oh that little thing?” she started, “I meant for it to be homework for you. To explore your options so to speak.”

She deftly snatches the spoon from your telekinetic grasp and feeds herself. Taking her time to gloat once again with her eyebrows she continued speaking.

“Have you ever heard of the saying, ‘chase after two rabbits and you will catch neither’? Because that is exactly what you’re doing.”

Resigning to the fact that she has won this round for now, you allow her to finish the pies in peace.

“That was delicious, now, what was I talking about?” she started again, “Right, the companies. What I am saying is that some these may or may not be good investments. They just happened to be the ones being talked about the most in most circles right now. Did you know that Nagai-Urobuchi Meats Inc. just declared bankruptcy? Apparently the French hated them so much they got the EU to embargo all their products. My recommendation? Start looking in to the domestic companies first before looking abroad.”

So she wanted you to look in to them first huh? That made sense in a way. It wasn’t long before she was cleared and was walking beside under her own power. As you made it to the lobby however, there was a man that seemed to recognise her.

“Asuka,” he called out.

or meet Asuka's Dad and or family

both are terrifying possibilities
>>
Just as quickly, you chased after her. If there was one thing you knew was that Asuka did not just run from things. She liked to just charge in head on and damn the consequences. Thus you had questions in your mind when you saw her leave like that. Who was that man, and how strong was he that even Asuka was running from him?

When you caught up to her she did not stop though thankfully the two of you weren’t being followed. Her face wasn’t full of fear, or dread. If there was to be a description of her expression it would be that she did not want to be within proximity to that man. There was no hatred or disgust. It did have an undercurrent of an unspoken promise though. Her pace was brisk but telekinetically powering your wheel chair wasn’t tiring at all.

“That,” she started before she spat out her next words, “That was my father.”

You recall something happened between the two of them but it was kind of rude to pry.

“We must make haste to the one place that he cannot reach,” she continued, “To the Tokiwadai Dormitories.”

You knew she wasn’t using her Ability but it was still compelling as you followed her. Was she running away?

There was no need to ask her now, not in public, perhaps later in private. Thus your walk was brisk and silent, save for the hustle and bustle of the city. Upon your arrival however, you found Aneue waiting for you. If anything she would know the exact reason her charge did not return to the dormitory yesterday night. Your fears if anything, are confirmed when she does not so much as glance at Asuka as the two of you walked up to the dormitory.

“Kudou, I am glad to see you are well,” her eyes did not leave you, “I hope you will have a speedy recovery.”

Asuka only inclined her head slightly enough before letting go of your hand.

“We shall talk more but today I wish to get some rest,” she said.

Then she walked through the doors, your path barred still by Aneue. Just then a cab drove up and out stepped the man that Asuka had said was her father. This broke Aneue’s gaze as she refocused on the new arrival.

“Lord Kudou,” her voice was just as welcoming as usual, “To what do I owe the pleasure?”

“Is my daughter well?” his voice was low yet unthreatening at the same time.

“Quite well, I take care of all my charges,” Aneue replied.

“Very well then, I will have business with that gentleman there.”

He gestured to you.

“It is most unfortunate that I have business with him as well,” Aneue countered.

It wasn’t exactly hard to guess what Aneue would want out of you. You’d be sat down and interrogated about why you were in a wheelchair and why Asuka got hurt, again. Then your head would roll, as well as your eyes and your spine would never be the same again. On the other hand, you had no idea what Asuka’s father would ask you about but it was certainly not going to involve physical harm, probably. His first question was to ask about his daughter after all. Wheeling yourself around, you nodded to him.

“Kyril Torikov,” you introduced yourself, “Can I help you?”

Aneue huffs and leaves as the man she called Lord Asuka raised his eyebrows. Whether it was directed at your casual use of your Ability, your lack of eyebrows or something else you’re weren’t sure.

“Lord Kudou Tomohisa, pleasure to make your acquaintance,” he offered his hand, “Just Kudou is fine.”

Shaking his hand didn’t hurt but you were still calling him Lord Kudou in your head though.

“Come,” he beckoned to the cab still waiting by the curb, “Let us talk in private.”

You already decided on him over Aneue so you didn’t back out now. Lord Kudou remained silent during the ride. The cab dropped the both of you off in School District 3 at a fancy hotel. You found yourself led to a private booth at the hotel’s restaurant.

“Order anything you wish, it shall be my treat,” he stated.

You order tea, as your prefer it and it doesn’t draw much reaction from Lord Kudou. The man instead orders a full course meal which would probably take a while to arrive. That doesn’t stop him from talking to you though.

“Do you like living in fear?” he asked.

You’re not sure where he’s going with this.

“Confused? Let me say that again. Do you like living in fear?” he continued, “If not now, then perhaps in the future, if you continue to court her so.”

It’s strange to find the typical words that made up threats from a girlfriends father, not that you had one before, so unthreatening. Rather, there was an uncomfortable amount of concern from that voice.

“I am sure you are aware of her,” he paused then settled for, “talents. Do you not mind it, that sword hanging above you by a hair’s width?”

So that was it? He’s asking whether you’re afraid of Asuka? Is that he how saw your relationship? He certainly didn’t mind you taking your time to answer, even as the waiter came and poured him a glass of rosé. What exactly was his game? Was he trying to sow doubt? Or was he genuinely curious? Maybe he was concerned for you? These questions and more swirled about like he swirled the liquid in his glass.

“So?” he had taken a sip in the mean time, “Would you like me to repeat a third time?”

>Write-in your reply. If you wish to ask him questions, please do so now
>>
>>31722758
I am not particularly concerned. We met under poorer circumstances to begin with.
>>
>>31722758
"A repeat won't be necessary Kudou-san and to answer your question, I don't 'Live in fear' because I trust her."

Asuka strikes me as a person that prefers to earn/work for things rather just have things handed to her or taking the easy road.

If she wanted some man candy BF or friends, she'd have just used her ability.

I respect that about her, and the common interests we share (violence) is nice too.
>>
He's already resisted her ability once. No need to fear it.
>>
>>31722758
"I do not live in fear. While Asuka is a dangerous young woman, I am a dangerous young man. It may simply be conceit on my part, but I believe myself to be a good partner for her because of it. I am aware of, and respect her skills and abilities, I trust her to not use them to bring injury to me, just as I assume she trusts me to not use mine to hurt her."

“A repeat won’t be necessary Kudou-san,” you stopped him, “To answer your question though, I say no. I do not mind it because I do not live in fear of her.”

You paused to take a sip. Lord Kudou did not speak up however. He did have a glimmer of amusement dancing in his eyes. Yep, they were definitely alike you thought.

“I do not live in fear because while Asuka is a dangerous you could say the same of me. It may simply be conceit on my part, but I believe myself to be a good partner for her because of it. I am aware of, and respect her skills and abilities, I trust her to not use them to bring injury to me, just as I assume she trusts me to not use mine to hurt her.”

Lord Kudou almost bursts out in to laughter.

“Trust, now there’s a funny word,” he finally spoke, “She does not trust, not people, especially one of your kind.”

He sighed.

“You are exactly the kind that I did not want her consorting with in the first place but you know what?”

No, you didn’t know what.

“You can go ahead, take this as far as you can, I certainly do not mind it at all,” he lit up another cigar, “If only so I can say ‘I told you so’ at your funeral. You’ll be a grand sacrifice indeed. A veritable sideshow to my business here in Academy City.”

He was making light of you.

Yeah you’ve had enough of him.

“Very well then, I'll let Asuka know you've given your blessings,” you said, “Now if you'll excuse me, I believe we have nothing more to discuss. Thank you for the tea.”

At least politeness demanded that much.

“I wish you luck in endeavours then,” was his parting remark.

Strange, he almost sounded sincere there. You put him out of your mind as you wheeled yourself out back in to the sunlight. At least he wasn’t going to interfere, or so you think. If he was anything like Asuka then he’d be a man of his word. You were headed back to your home district when your phone started ringing. It was Nunotaba, one time patron and the producer of yaoi manga starring you and your circle of friends. You wonder what she wanted.

Episode 30 end. Sorry no interlude tonight chaps. We resume on Wednesday.
