Nearly three weeks after the last attack on the city walls by the orc horde, Old Donnel returns from his journey and word finally comes down from the bishop. Donnel brought with him a fighting force from the far north, and with them you and the brothers and sisters dealt a crushing blow to the horde. The horde who once made camp a few miles around the perimeter of the city, has picked up and made for the great plains. The higher ups believe this to be due to either dwindling supplies and morale, but no lack of numbers. At any rate, the barricades have been torn down and repairs have begun in full.

A month since, Leman has been swept up again in regular affairs, and managing the business of the inquisitors. Donnel has scooped up Anna, and the two of them have set off on a tour of the world, disappearing into the night and leaving nothing but a note for their children. Annalise and Pietra continue to spend time together, only now Kor has become part of the group. You mostly see Annalise while training at the palace, or at her house. You've begun to spend more nights in the palace than her home, as well. On this warm day, you are summoned to the bishop's office, but are not told why. You make your way there and stand before her and her brother, blind and grumpy as ever.

"It's good to see you in such good health, especially after all that's happened. I hear you slew one of the orc leaders in single combat. That's very impressive, even for true armored brothers."

The bishop seems slightly wounded by your cutting to the chase. She sighs and shuffles some things on her desk.

"Now that it seems the city is safe, there is a great deal of business to attend to. Foremost, we are sending clerics across the continent to rally more members for the church. You however, have proven yourself more tenacious than a job as simple as that requires. However, there is the matter of your standing. You've once turned down my offer of promotion. I ask you one last time, if you will accept full communion into the church. If not, then things will change from here on out."

"We need true brothers and sisters now. While we appreciate what you have done for us, should your dedication be seen by others as wavering, it would lead to questioning of the church. It's bad enough that Donnel brought sellswords to our aid, but having fighters who only pledge themselves for power or glory is absolutely not tolerable. This being the case, should you deny promotion, we will be forced to strip you of rank in total. You may still reside in this city, and worship here as you wish, but you will not be commanded by the church, and we will cease to provide food and board. I'm sorry, but now is a time for unity, not halfheartedness."

You agree to fulfill a mission, in exchange for more time to think on your future. This relieves the bishop quite a bit, and she returns to her cheerful self. She reaches into a desk drawer and produces three envelopes. She places them face up on the table before you and points to them in turn.

"These are our three priority missions at the moment. The first will involve you journeying back the way Donnel came, to the Icelands, to meet with the tribal warriors there. They mean to collect payment for services rendered in regards to their soldiers. It should be a simple diplomacy mission. The second means travelling to the far northeast. We have gotten word that there is a new technology there to prevent siege. Of course, with recent events, we have learned the value of such an invention. You will find it's creator, and bargain a means for us to obtain at the very least plans to build whatever it is for our own defense. Finally, there are rumors from Rangers to the far south, that some foul manner of creature has spawned in the dense jungles. We are already planning to send Annalise on this mission, so should you choose to go, you will be under her command. Choose any you desire."

>>

You decide to go northeast, to the self titled City of Progress. The bishop hands you the envelope, and you examine its contents. Apparently, the cities there have only been built recently, after the colonies there rebelled against their masters. Since then, a number of genius artists and mathematicians have used the place as a hub of art and culture, and it has turned into a place of high social standard. Most religious people are seen as undesirable, so you will be disallowed to publicly proclaim your faith whilst there.

You thank the bishop for her time, and take the envelope back out of the room with you. That settled, you suppose it's time to begin preparing.

By the way, Rags, sorry your Easter didn't turn out quite the way you expected it.
>>
>>31712817
You decide to first take care of the supplies you'll need. You've got no weapons or armor of your own now, so that will be important. You should also decide how you plan to travel. You check your trunk, back in the common room, and find eighty gold pieces hidden away. That will be enough for good armor and a weapon, but it will leave you with little to no money for food and travel expenses. Alternatively, you could borrow some of the extra stock from the church, which won't be nearly as good but will save you plenty.

You begin by returning to the house to find Pietra. You discover her lounging in the parlor, sipping iced tea. It doesn't take much to convince her at all, and in fact she seems eager to join you. You make a little time to chat with Annalise as well, who is already preparing for her mission south.

Next, you go to the palace. You find Maurice shredding books in the archives, stuffing pages up his sleeves.

As you suspect, she is back in the weight room. The sisters have taken quite a liking to her. She often goes there to exercise her frustrations, and since starting she is dramatically more bubbly when you speak.

Today, she appears to be outcurling some of the brothers. They struggle to keep up, but her stamina is tremendous. She outpaces them all without so much as breathing heavily. You approach her and ask her to join you on your mission.

"Gathering weapons? That seems a bit boring. Can't we go on a mission to pet some kittens instead? Churches like kittens, right?"

Inside, Leman snores on the sofa as Annalise works to sharpen her sword on the whetstone. She smiles as you enter, and invites you to sit down beside her. You break down, and concede to Leman. He smiles and rises from the couch, yawning and stretching. You follow him down the hall and to his room. He leads you in and shuts the door, then crosses over to a familiar object covered in a tarp. You recall seeing it a few times while you slept in Leman's room, but you never thought to look under it.

"Like I said, Pietra found it when she was making her way here from the desert, and gave it to me. It was a bit beaten down, but a little elbow grease and some scrap got it in good order." Leman grabs the tarp and pulls it away. Beneath, you see your old armor, the same set he gifted to you years ago. Only know, it's got some clear scars and patches. "Well? DO you want it back?"

Leman laughs. He helps you into the armor once again. Your old strength still hasn't returned in full, and so the suit seems a bit heavier than you remember, but it is comfy, and it makes you feel safe to be sealed up again, like a paladin should. Leman compares you to the story of a wandering knight he once heard from his nanny. Indeed, the armor is less than pristine, but it's damage adds a sort of ruggedness to it.

Soon the two of you return to the parlor and wait for your comrades to arrive. Kor and Pietra arrive first, and Maurice only an hour later. They each add their own personal things to their packs. Now, all four of you are ready to head out.

Your plate armor clanks and scrapes as you move, completely nullifying any chance at stealth you may have had before taking the tall grass into account. That said, you draw closer to the tree.

You enter the small clearing that houses the old lumber, but find nothing remaining but footprints that seem to circle the trunk endlessly without veering off. Pietra inspects them, but can't seem to trace them anywhere.

"Damn. How'd she slip away? It's not as though she's small and nimble."

The two of you continue to follow short sets of prints put down by Kor. This continues until you can hear Maurice in the distance calling to you.

"We tracked some rabbits, then when we had enough Pietra told me to go back while she got some berried. I didn't know there were berries in grass." It seems, as you sort everything out, that the attack was a ruse by Pietra. Her only defense is claiming that the whole thing was meant to be a practical joke of sorts. She laughs, embarrassed.

You stop Pietra from sleeping. She turns over to you, curious about what you're about to say. As you speak, her expression seems to bounce around from confused, to hopeful, and finally to annoyed. She turns back to the fire. For a moment, the two of you sit in silence.

"That's the stupidest thing I've ever heard. I don't think we'll have any more problems. Good night." Pietra stands and brushes herself off before plopping down in her bedroll and covering up.

You sit in stunned silence for the rest of the night, watching the fire burn itself out. When you grow too sleepy, you wake Maurice and have him sit watch before going to bed. That night, you have another dream. This time there is no river. There is only a single snake, coiled upon a rock. You watch it rattle its tail briefly, before reaching for your sword. When you do, it strikes, and forces its way down your throat, choking you to death. You wake in a sweat, with Pietra staring at you.

You ask Pietra what's gotten her in such a sour mood so early in the day. She scoffs and turns away, moving over to help Kor with her bedroll. You stand and begin putting your armor back on.

Once everything is packed again, the four of you set off. You march shoulder to shoulder, not unconscious of the fact that Pietra seems insistent on keeping both Maurice and Kor between you at all times. This continues for the rest of the day, and even when you make camp at night, Pietra avoids speaking to you any more than absolutely necessary. After Kor has begun her meditation, and Maurice has begun his sleep mumbling, you're left alone again with Pietra, who sits on the opposite side of the fire, poking it violently with a stick.

That night, you have the same dream from before. A rattlesnake forcing it's way down your throat, choking you until you die. This time when you wake up, it's from Pietra stepping on your stomach. She doesn't even wait for a response this time before turning away and finding something to do besides talk to you. You dress and move on.

Her cold behavior continues for a few more days, and eventually Maurice catches on. He mentions as much over dinner one night, when Pietra goes to make water.

"Well, before anything else sir," Maurice spits on your shirt. "Now, moving on. I believe Miss Pietra is hurt by your inability to commit to either her or Miss Annalise. That being the case, it may be best to simple choose one or neither. Though at this point, the choice may already be made."

"You could be more affectionate with her. I've always wanted someone to pick me up in their arms and hold me. Ah, someday. Or you could just put a babe in her. Either or." Maurice nods. Kor also seems to approve of the idea.

"I cannot tell you who to love, sir. I only hope you make the right choice, in the end."

A while later, Pietra returns. She sits beside Kor, and across from you. The four of you stay quiet for a while, taking in the sounds of the night. Soon, Maurice dozes and Kor slips into her meditation. Pietra stays up, taking last watch as usual. That night, as you sleep, you have the snake dream again. Only tonight the snake seems different. It's almost like an eel. Worse, it thrashes around in your mouth, shooting off lightning, as you've heard some eels can. When you wake up, you feel hot, to the point that you ask Maurice to examine you. He says you may simply have a summer cold, and gives you a bottle of purple goop to drink. It does make you feel a bit better, and the four of you press on.

Two weeks pass, and Pietra begins to thaw. One morning, she merely shakes you awake instead of stepping on you or throwing dirt in your face. You decide to use that night to begin the healing process. After Maurice falls asleep, you look over to Pietra, who is snapping bits of twig off of a branch and tossing them into the low flame.

"I'll do it. I'll share you. If it means nobody has to be hurt, I can do it. But I have one condition." Pietra looks at you now. You can see tears already building up. "Make me your wife, and only me."

I said I was alright with harem route, but this is feeling forced as fuck, dude. Besides, think of everyone else - Maurice clearly thinks lesser of us already, think of Anna's family, and the whole deal with us being a paladin. Our religion probably sees polygamy as a bad thing.

Wat Do?

>>31730415
You ask Pietra to let you think for a while. She agrees, apparently relieved to drop the situation for now. Soon she yawns, and goes off to bed, leaving you with first watch.

A good while goes by without much to think of. Pietra doesn't bring up your conversation, but she does seem a bit friendlier now. She talks to you casually, and even starts to act flirty again. Maurice does seem to be suspicious, but he mentions nothing.

After two more weeks, you reach the Ice Peaks, a mountain range that slashes the continent in two, splitting east and west. From here, you can either climb, or take the tunnel road through the base for a price. As you approach, Pietra votes to stay at the small town near the base and rest before tacking the tunnel. Kor seems eager to challenge the mountain though, and Maurice doesn't wish to bother with such rural folk.

Way I saw it was more that it seemed as if Pietra wasn't really interested, more desperate. Especially looking at the terms of the agreement, she may as well just be telling us to ditch Anna and be with her.

You vote to climb the mountain, to Pietra's anger. The three of you make your way toward the small mountain town to restock on needed supplies before the trip.

The town is small, but lively. The buildings are squeezed close and stacked on top of one another, and people move all about in their warm coats. You purchase a surcoat to wrap around yourself, and Pietra and Kor find warm parkas, gloves and boots. Maurice seems to only desire a pair of fur lined boots and a hat, and when you warn him that they won't be enough to keep him warm at the peak of the mountain, he simply waves it away and assures you hell be fine.

As you wrap up your shopping, Pietra asks if it would be all right to at least stay at an inn for tonight, and order a bath.

You make it to a small inn that offers hot bathes for a gold piece. The manager is friendly, and admires your weapons and packs, commenting on how you must be brave travelers. He recommends a room for each of you, as well as the full bath package, but you wonder if he isn't just trying to grease you up a bit.

You tell Maurice that you haven't made any decisions yet. He hums. "May I ask sir. Do you plan to sire the children of two women? How will you raise them? Though, I suppose it's not as though Leman hasn't had his share of women. Perhaps it would by a bit hypocritical to forbid you from indulging in your own youth."

The two of you enter a small changing room where you put your clothes away in neat little lockers before jumping into a large stone tub. You scrub and soak for a while, and Maurice seems to take excellent care of his beard, considering how ragged he always looks. The beginning is simple enough. There is a path that people use to take ice from the frozen lakes on the mountain. But after you leave this trodden path, things get rugged quickly. Before night, you are all nearly crawling up the mountainside. It takes hours to find a suitable place to set up camp. The treeline cuts off the chill wind here, and so you begin building a fire with Maurice.

In an hour or so, they come back with rabbits and some pine nuts. The food isn't as good as the stuff in town, but it does the job.

The next few days are simple enough, though they are very tiring. The rugged mountain challenges your strength and endurance to the point that in some places you have to piggyback Maurice and Pietra just to get through. In time, you make it to the peak. The cold air and freezing winds make the gorgeous view of the distant plains and lakes almost painful. Here, you encounter a man dressed in heavy pelts, dragging a sled full of animal skins. You find out that he's a mountaineer on his way to sell his goods for a hot meal and perhaps some company in town. He warns you about a beast that wanders here, but something about his description strikes you as false. You've never heard of a creature ten feet tall with the face of an ape and foot long claws. Pietra doesn't think much of it either, but Maurice seems intent on listening to the man prattle on about ghost stories.

It's cry is like daggers in your ear, and if it catches sight of you, it'll chase you down and eat you whole, doesn't even need to chew! What's worse is that it can turn even brave men into cowards just by the sight of it. I warn ye, get down this mountain quick as you can, and don't dwell in the caves, or it'll find you and gobble you right up!" The man goes on like this for a while before running out of steam. You say your goodbyes, and begin climbing down the other side of the Ice Peaks.

You get back up and find your sword, then turn to look for the beast. It appears lying face down in a snowdrift, not far from Pietra. Pietra tries to get up, but looks pained.

You take up your sword and move through the thick layer of snow to the beast. The snow prevents you from doing anything but hopping over like a bird, but you move as quickly as you can. You reach the monster, and raise your sword and prepare to plunge it into the monster's back, but suddenly one of its large hands shoots up and bats you away, knocking you ass first into the snow. The beast scratches its back, standing up and groaning. You get up as quickly as you can, meeting it face to face. It ponders you for a moment, then seems to remember you, and becomes enraged. It beats on its own chest and brings a hand back to swipe at you.

You bring your sword around and plunge it into the beast's incoming hand. Blood sprays forth, steaming in the cold air and splashing onto the snow, ruining the perfect whiteness of it. The beast itself cries in pain, pulling its hand away and yanking your sword out of your grip. It falls into the deep snow just a few feet away. The beast steps back and examines its injured hand, crying in pain.

Using the path of cleared snow left by the creature, you rush and tackle it. The force of this attack isn't nearly as great as before, but you do push it back quite a ways. You wrap your arms around the beast and try to pull it to the ground, but it resists, and begins wrestling with you for control. Behind you, Pietra has finally found her feet.

You shout for Pietra to bring you your sword, lost in the snow a short ways back. She runs over to the blood splashed snow and digs around.

The creature yells into your face. You can smell meat and milk on its breath, and as before the scream weakens you a bit, giving it the upper hand.

"Shit! this thing is fucking heavy! How do you swing this around?!" Pietra has found your sword, and now struggles to drag it back to you. You feel the beast pushing you down into the snow, and if you don't break out soon, it will bend you backward and snap your spine.

You begin trying to channel energy into the damaged sigil on your breastplate. The spell isn't nearly as potent now, but you do bring yourself to a stalemate. You shout for Pietra to drop your sword, and focus instead on finding Kor to help you.

"Are you kidding? That'll take too long! Ah, hold still!" Pietra shouts behind you, but you can't turn to see her. You don't realize what she's doing until she is already in motion. She runs up behind you and uses you as a platform, climbing up onto your shoulders and planting a foot on one, then leaping up and over the beast. As she sails overhead, she tosses something that hits the beast in the eye. It bursts into a cloud of red powder, blinding the beast. Pietra lands on the beasts back again, grabbing a hold of its fur and drawing a knife from her boot. She uses it to cut open the beast's throat, and it releases you. It falls backward, and Pietra barely manages to jump off before it crushes her. The beast thrashes in the snow, struggling for air.

You pick up your sword and plunge it into the beast's heart. It tries to cry out, but thanks to Pietra it no longer can. It writhes for a while, then gives up. Pietra buries it in a bit of snow, either out of pity or the desire to hide the body from her sight. You wipe your blade on the snow and slide it home.

"Well then, aren't you glad you bring me along for these things?" Pietra smiles, smugly.

A) "Thanks. Let's go back."
B) "That was reckless. I could have handled it."
C) "You could have tried that sooner."
