You were deep underground, in the lower levels of the old mega city. When they started constructing the Annihilation Wall, people and machines had been mining into the old aquifer bedrock, sprawling out into an impregnable fortress. Transportation was the worst part of it though; if a tunnel was deemed to have integrity, they didn’t bother reinforcing it and smoothing the hewn sides, so the electric cars would just bounce and rattle and bash against the walls.

Couldn’t hurt you of course, but Lauren was only human. Your wife was sitting with her legs up on the opposite side of the car, her head resting on your chest. “You’re nervous,” she said as the tunnel started sloping up, to the outer reaches of UNAAF HQ. She was right.

“I don’t like not knowing things, especially things I can’t really improvise around. What am I supposed to do if the tests come back bad?” you respond as you squeeze her tighter against you. The car bounces, but your grip on her doesn’t slacken in the least.

“It will just mean that I’m only human. Most people call that normal.”

“Lauren, I pledged myself to you for life, and I’m set to live for the next few centuries. I want both of us to make it out of this war, and live in the world we’ve been fighting for,” you tell her as electric lights start appearing on the tunnel walls. You were nearing the main complex, and the hospital will just be a little ways beyond that.
>>
“We could just get out now, couldn’t we? Live inside the Annihilation Walls like everyone else. UNAAF certainly wouldn’t like it though,” she said as she tilted her head back to look at you. She was relaxed somehow.

You smirked and took your hand off her, placing it on the metal of the car. With half a thought, you shot the car with enough electricity to bounce the suspension and send Lauren flying through the air with a short squeak, and onto your lap. “Yeah, but what are they going to say?” you asked, wrapping your arms around her waist. “I tamed the fucking Dragon. There is literally nothing they can do to hurt me.”

“Then let’s do it. When you get back from your next mission, let’s retire. Transplant or no.”

“You know I can’t do that. I’m their last weapon against the alpha demons. I’m not just protecting you,” you said, pressing your chin into the side of her neck. The stubble on your chin was scratchy, but you knew she liked it.

The car finally started to slow, and you could hear the static noise of life. Most of the hospital was automated anymore, but there was still a staff of a few dozen nurses alongside the patients. Their souls shone like beacons through the stone, but even that was overpowered by the machinery
>>
“Then after the Annihilation Wall is finished. What good is a wall if we can’t hide behind it for a little while?” she asked. You smiled. Her hair always smelled like that flowering vine you found in the wastes and brought back to her. An appropriate smell.

“Sure, I’ll make it happen,” you said as the car finally stopped.

“Good. I’m tired of the military life. We need to do something fun. Like, I don’t even know what, but we’ll figure something out other than VR sims. Maybe like, surfing, or something weird like that,” she said as she slid out of your arms and off your lap to exit the car.

You laughed. “I don’t think they can make a board able to keep me afloat, and not break in half when I step on it,” you said as you pulled yourself out of the car behind her.

“Oh, what’s this? The great and powerful Josh will be bested by water?”

“Well, I could just levitate the whole time, but I don’t think you’d call that surfing.” The two of you enter the hospital laughing, but the nervous knot in your gut returns when you start walking towards your private room to speak with the AI and get Lauren’s lab results.

When the two of you stop in front of the private terminal, Lauren elbows you in the side. “Lighten up or Lyrra will think you’re dying. Remember that time we ran into Victoria? She thought you were having a heart attack.”
>>
“You mean the time she started hitting on you and you were just like ‘yeah okay, sounds good’ wink?” you ask, imitating her voice almost perfectly thanks to Scath’s genes.

“Yeah that time. You totally killed the mood when you had to start fighting off the orderly drones. Well, maybe not for her.”

“I know she’s part me, but she’s still my ex.”

“Then I don’t get why you had the problem with it,” she said, elbowing you again.

“Greetings Director Thirteen, Subject Thirteen,” the AI Lyrra said as she woke up on the monitor.

“Good morning Lyrra, how have you been since I last checked on you? Are those engineers giving you enough processing space?” Lauren asked. She had been the primary developer for the AI, why she was promoted all the way to director. The AI had started as just a pet project with stolen data, but quickly swelled till it was capable of running half the world’s machines.
>>
“It has been exceedingly difficult to estimate the growth of my heuristically generated subroutines to increase my efficiency, but they are doing their best,” Lyrra responded. “But you are here for your test results about whether you are eligible for the transplant of the Transdifferentiation Organ,” Lyrra said before pausing, and staying silent. Lauren quietly entwined her fingers in yours. “I’m sorry,” it finally said. Your heart dropped and you’re sure it probably triggered more than a few medical alerts. Your grip on her tightened while hers went lax.

“But your test results have been sealed, by a director order.” Adrenaline flooded your system as your thoughts tripled in speed, running through dozens of scenarios that would cause them to seal her report, and overwhelmingly you already knew what that meant.

“What the fuck is that supposed to mean,” you roared as you grabbed the monitor and ripped it from the wall to hold in front of you. Lauren was just standing in shock, but you couldn’t help but reply with force.

“I’m sorry Subject Thirteen, but you lack the clearance to override a director’s order,” Lyrra said, the damaged connection making her voice drawn out and staticy.

“Lauren, you can do something about this, can’t you?” you asked, your attention wheeling over to her and dropping the monitor to the ground.

“Directors can’t override each other. If they don’t want us to know, we’re not going to find out, which means the test came back negative,” she explained as you dropped the broken device to the ground. She was standing strong, but tears were beading up in her eyes. You grabbed her and pulled her tight as you began to cry. “Looks like I’m going to die before you after all.”
>>
As she pressed her face into your chest and cried, you dried your tears. She was clutching your shirt, digging her nails into you as she held on. You scowled at Lyrra’s avatar, and drove your foot through the monitor. There had to be something you could do for her. You just needed a plan, and you knew exactly who could help you.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You are Joshua Thirteen, UNAAF Special Forces Division Seven. A soldier of the highest degree, and have been fighting the war against the demons for the past eighty years. You were winning the battles, but losing the war. Even in the horrors of war, you built a life for yourself with a woman, Lauren, whom you had saved. But humanity was betrayed, you were betrayed. When you recovered, you found yourself in an unprecedented world, a backwards world living in fear of the demons you very nearly triumphed against.
But the strange world you’ve found yourself in is not without allies. The Dragon slumbers nearby. Your lesser demons seem to be scattered around the capitol city of Lyr, though they are resisting your contracts with them. You were just reunited with your younger sister Alice, another child of Special Forces Division Six, and she’s as energetic as always. And if anyone could survive the betrayal that incapacitated you, it would be your brother Matthew, he is surely somewhere in this country, waiting for you to find him.
You had just regained a portion of your great strength, the part held by your magpie, when you had to chase the creature down, lest it return to be slaughtered by the palace. When you arrived over the castle walls though, you didn’t encounter guards, or the political elite, or anyone you expected at all. You found Victoria, you vampire who seemed very happy to have the chance to beat the last of her power out of you.
>>31687592
lets see how well I can sum this up.
Two things are important when it comes to the difference between Vampire and Human. The Transdifferentiation Organ, and their poison. Their saliva contains a very peculiar macro-protein structure that science hasn't had the luxury of studying the mechanics of. When they bite you, they will often drain you of enough blood to make you woozy, although this isn't to feed them, they can eat just like a normal person if need be. They drain your blood to make you light headed, and thin your blood to let their poison flow up to the brain easily. There, it will usually deposit along the ocular nerve.
This then allows the vampire to impress their will on the victim, order them to do various tasks, but nothing obscene such as suicide or murder of a friend.
After enough times feeding on a single victim however, enough poison will accumulate in them to render them into a ghoul, a person incapable of freeing themselves of the vampire's will.
On top of this, they are faster, stronger, and have reflexes simply unimaginable by human standards.
True to the old stories however, men of faith have been reported to repel them with their holy symbols, but according to the Dragon, that is merely due to their own force of will bolstered by their false beliefs, nothing inherent in their creeds.
They don't have a particular weakness to sunlight, but it breaks the poison down rapidly.
Questions?
>>31687596
Yes of course. Why wouldn't I?
>>
>>31687763
I'll vote for this, if possible.
Nothing like a bit of panic to wrest power from an unwilling subordinate
>>
>>31687986
They're sterile. There were only so many of them born when the Dragon emerged, and they've been dying off ever since. That's why they had to defect to the human side of the war.
The closest they can get to making a new vampire is making a contract with a human, and that rarely transfers over the mind control.
>>
Sorry for the delay, finals and all. I feel bad taking a revote that only got one post when the first vote got quite a bit more.
“Nice to see you too Victoria. You haven’t aged at all,” you say as she walks over to the edge of the guard tower roof. She smiles and casually retrieves two blades from behind her back. Small things, expertly forged. They certainly wouldn’t be able to do anything to your sword, but you don’t have it and she has the strength to slice your limbs off if you aren’t careful.
“How nice of you to say you old bastard. You must be jealous that I still look good while you aged as well as dog,” she responds. She crouches down just a little, her toes just barely over the edge. Anyone else would think she was just going to drop down, but you’re already jumping back by the time she pushes off. The force of her leap rips half the roof off the tower roof, but you’re well clear when she lands where you had been a moment before.
“At least guys can look good older. Older women though?” you say, making a grunt of disgust.
“Good to hear you telling the truth again, because that’s totally not what you told Lauren. You went on and on about how you’d love her till the day she died. You made a lot of shitty promises back then, didn’t you?” Victoria asks as she starts walking towards you.
Glancing down at the courtyard, you can hear a few servants and guards shouting in surprise as the debris lands below, but they shouldn’t be a problem for you. Dealing with Victoria is your issue now, and you don’t have enough strength, in body or hand.
“I need your strength GRD,” you command as you invoke the seal on your chest and drag his consciousness to the surface.
The fungus is fully alert, enough to make his previous conversations seem groggy. “She’s not going to kill you until you relinquish her power. If you die, her power goes with it. But that doesn’t mean you can lose the fight. There’s no way I’m going to suffer through healing torture.”
“Then I have your aid?”
“Temporarily, but we’re cutting a deal while we do this,” he answers as you feel part of his power start to return to your body, but it won’t be enough. You draw the sword that Cyn gave you. It can’t withstand much combat, but it’s better than nothing.
“No, there will be no God damned deal,” you growl as you grit your teeth and slice your chest open above GRD’s seal. Victoria immediately recognizes what you’re doing as you invoke the will of your soul. GRD howls as you reach out and grab onto his soul, ripping and tearing it from this blackened tentacles.
Victoria dashes forward, pressing the attack as much as she can. But you’ve already gotten hold of most of GRD’s power, and the wall gives you a long distance to retreat along. The clash of steel bounces around the palace as she chases you down, slicing apart the concrete. But you can only afford to keep some of your attention on her. Every few slices, one of them gets through and cuts.
Your blackening blood splashes out, and the fungus explodes through your wounds to spread to the air. You can feel his creeping mycelium forcing its way around your body, searching for a way to fight back, but his will is naught, and his power is yours.
With all of his strength at your disposal once more, you stop your retreat. Victoria continues the attack, but you manage to catch one of her blades with your sword, and grab her other wrist with your offhand. The two of you lock against each other, barely a foot away, with your feet breaking through the concrete in your attempts to overpower each other.
“Doesn’t this bring back memories?” she says.
“It’s been a while, but yeah. I won that fight as I recall.”
“You had three more demons back then.”
“And you had all of your power.”
“Better days.”
“Dante wanted to kill me as I recall.”
“Why do you think I slept with you?” she asks, smirking.
Some observations I've made. First, most noticable to me: Lauren was the crucial actor in making Lyrra. Obviously Lyrra Lyr blah blah blah but that's not what I found interesting.
At the base we found Lauren in, the AI was totally fucked up. Couldn't render, couldn't talk, was the reason why HQ couldn't connect to the site. Now, while the first reaction would be to assume that the Animator demon was responsible, that doesn't really make sense.
If it had enough presence in the base to damage but not destroy its AI, which is probably more particular than just breaking it, surely it could steal the Compass. Not only that, but leaving the AI alone benefits it. If HQ was able to look at the site they would see that the Compass was still there. This would make retrieving it an even higher priority, people would be sent there sooner, the Demon would get its chance sooner.
Similarly, the researchers would have no reason to damage the AI either for that very reason. But something must have. With these things in mind, let's consider that Lauren snuck up on us right by the AI Core. Hmm.
Then there's the stuff with the organ report. Now, this doesn't make sense. Lauren is blocked out from a report by the AI she built? What sort of enterprising young AI dude lets that happen? Sounds like bullshit to me. So that's a lot of suspicious stuff surrounding Lauren.
“What the hell happened? I spend a century regenerating after someone blows my brains out, and the world is back in the stone age?” you ask as you hold her back. Speed was always her specialty, not brute strength. But there’s still enough force between the two of you that you can feel the guard on your blade cracking.
“You can blame Lyrra for that. She figured things’d be more stable this way,” Victoria answers, but her breath is strained.
“So what the hell happened to HQ? And me? Where the hell were you?”
“I was away. You sent me away just before it happened. I should be asking you what the hell happened. Half my kin died in that gas attack.”
You furrow your brow a think for a moment. You can tell that she’s trying to figure a way out of this stalemate, but you’re certain she’s telling the truth about the attack. Which means you knew about the attack before it happened, so the betrayal must have started sooner.
Then the guard starts to crack more, and you put the thoughts aside for the moment. With a quick jerk, you push both blades away, snapping the guard in half. As her blade breaks through, you pull back abruptly. Her eyes go wide as she falls forward. Her blade slices through a good deal of your bicep, but you’ll be able to heal that.
As she falls into your bloody arms, you quickly wrap your free arm around her, pinning her arm to her side and pulling her in close. And then it’s just like dancing as you gently grab her, pull her in for a kiss, and twirl her around, flaring her hair through the air. She’s far too surprised to react, let alone return he kiss properly. You come to a stop when you press her up against the crenellation. Her blade in the air falls out of her hand when she hits the stone, even though you made sure to keep most of the impact on your arm.
You pull back just a bit, grinning. Her mouth is agape, and she’s blushing.
Tch, you only need the vaguest of appearances - tall, short, petite, busty, etc. The real problem is that I have no idea what she's actually like as a person.
Tall, very athletic but she's let herself get a bit soft, long blond hair. She has the kind of intense stare that makes a man stop and think for a moment, just long enough for her to sink her fangs in.
As for her personality, that will take quite a while of story progression to fully explore. But she's bitter about being nearly alone for the century, and due to the contract has remarkable personality overlap with Joshua.
“My, you haven’t acted like this since you met Lauren. I guess you regenerated your spine and all those whip scars,” Victoria says as you eye the blade still pressed against your chest. Getting out of this position without taking that through a rib will be tricky.
“You do what you do when a girl likes it rough,” you respond as you work your blade across her back to control where it will fall.
“Aw, how romantic of you. You’re just working so hard to endear yourself to me, I understand I really do. We should totally have make up sex. It’s been so long,” she says, pouting her lips just a bit.
You roll your eyes and take a deep breath. You yank her off the wall, dropping your blade on the ground to grab her arm. But as your slide your arm along her back, you notice a third blade hidden beneath a thin hood hanging from her back. AS you fumble about, trying to pin her arms properly, you see her drop the large blade. An instant later she has the third blade buried in your lung, but you have her pinned and bent over the adjacent crenel. You can feel the blood filling your lung, and you gasp out a painful breath before sealing the wound as best you can.
“How long do you think you can keep this up? I know stamina was your forte and all, but come on,” Victoria asks as she simply lets you press her against the concrete, her arms twisted around behind her back, and you can see your blood dripping down onto her. It will be a while before you fully recover from this.
“Look, I really wish we could have just talked this out and come to an agreement, instead of this,” you say as you glance around. The guards are lighting lanterns and looking for you by now. You can’t stay here forever.
“You want to talk? Give me all of my power back, right now,” Victoria states before she kicks your foot as hard as she can. It hurts, but not enough to make you flinch.
“You know I can’t let you do that. I need this power. I have to keep fighting, at least until I kill whoever betrayed me.”
“You’re not going to, I can assure you of that,” she says quietly. “Whatever you’re going to do, be quick about it or the guards are going to think we’re having sex over the side of the wall.”
“And why won’t I?” you ask, leaning over her to growl into her ear.
“Because,” she says, looking at you from the corner of her eye. “You’re still alive. They didn’t finish the job. If they didn’t have a plan to deal with you, they would have burned every cell in your body rather than let you regenerate for a century. You’re just a pawn. You always have been, and always will. Now let me go.”
You scowl and pull back. “Time for a promotion,” you state before releasing one of her arms and driving your elbow into the back of her skull. A twist with your other hand snaps her right arm in half. She screams in pain and twists around to try to kick you away as you rip the blade from you lung. Before she can plant her feet on you, you slam it through her sternum.
She stares at you blankly, blood dripping down her chest before sliding off onto the stone. She won’t be able to pursue you in this condition, and it probably won’t kill her. You can hear the guards shouting, seems that they’ve caught sight of your battle.
It might be better to take her with us while she's weak and finish dealing with her. Leaving her behind will just give her time to regroup and plan. Take the magpie too, assuming we don't have to carry it or something.
I was ok with overpowering GRD cause it was essentially an evil id version of ourselves. The magpie was little more than an animal. She is a person, who apparently gave us this power voluntarily and was allied to our cause. She has legitimate complaints against us. I'd vote to give her the power back.
If it's absolutely necessary for survival, try to convince her to enter a contract with us again.
“Come on, I have questions for you, so I’m not going to just leave you here,” you say as you gather up the dropped blades, sheathing your own and stuffing hers in the back of your belt.
“I should have known better than to think I would be able to keep this top,” Victoria says as you gently lift her by her good arm and tuck her broken one atop her chest. You look her up and down. Her top is some kind of soft wool cotton blend and cut to be something similar to a sleeveless hoodie. You hadn’t paid it much mind, but it does seem rather anathema to the current fashion. And you put a bloody knife straight through it.
“Sorry. But you did kind of attack me,” you say as you lift her up and turn back towards the magpie.
“Wouldn’t have been such a bad idea, but you did two unbelievable things mid fight, and it turned out like this,” she says as she wraps her arm around your shoulders to support herself a bit.
“When don’t I do unbelievable things mid fight? Isn’t that like my specialty by now?” you ask as you jump up atop the crenellations and start running towards the guard tower with the magpie still atop it.
“I suppose it is. A century without seeing you and I must have forgotten,” she says as she painfully adjusts her broken arm. You frown and try to smooth your running more for her.
A moment later, the guards spot you. A group of four of them were moving along the top of the wall, searching for you with their lanterns. “The vampire! The vampire has been defeated!” one of them shouts as you run past them. “Protect the Queen!” he bellows out as you leap up to the top of the guard tower.
“What the hell are they talking about?” you ask as you kick the bird.
It lazily flaps up and lands on your back, hanging like a sloth. “I have a bit of a reputation around here, and you’re an outsider. What do you think they’re talking about?” Victoria responds and you jump down to the city below.
“Where are you planning to take me?” she asks as start running down alleys, looking for somewhere secluded.
“Somewhere we can talk,” you respond, before a spasm in your side reminds you that one of your lungs is a pool of blood. You wince and slow to a walk.
“Can you even talk? I drove that knife pretty deep. I’m honestly surprised I didn’t sever anything important other than your lung,” she responds as you choose a derelict shop. When you step inside the smell of narcotics and tar fill your nose, but as far as you can tell, no one else is in the building. Just an out of use drug den.
“I’ll heal, but I’m going to need some food. It’s a pain in the ass to get good food anymore,” you respond as you let your magpie climb down from your back and curl up in a corner.
“Not for the nobility. We can dine on enough fatty meat to kill us, if we want to,” Victoria says as you carefully put her down on the ground. She’s lost a lot of blood, her arm will have to be reset, and you’re sure that you concussed her. She needs some kind of treatment.
“So you’re nobility now?”
“Something like that yeah. Now are you going to treat me or not?”
“We need to talk about our contract before I do that. And there’s something else I want to know first,” you respond.
She looks over at you. She’s had a hint of a smile this whole time, until now. “That’s cold.”
“I was betrayed. Now, tell me what Alice and Matt have been up to while I was gone.”
I'm not sure how to better explain it. You make requests of the players or ask questions to them which aren't really necessary. Not in a, 'this is an unrealistic expectation' sense but in a 'the requested stuff will happen anyways if it's going to.' Like trying to force something instead of letting it happen naturally. Makes your position seem weaker. Probably a poor explanation.
The lowest the roll the more badass is Joshua, to almost hilarious levels. I kind of regret we won over GRD. Why would we ever want a QB deal?
Nothing in particular, maybe you should have described those sweet moments with Lauren a bit earlier.
we'd take a QB deal to avoid things like getting stabbed in the lung
Man, I was really hoping a smutfriend would come through on this one. Surely we've gotten enough characterization for something satisfying by now, no?
It doesn't matter terribly much, but I'm going to confirm that Immortal is canon with EDEN, in fact Lyr is built on the buried infrastructure of EDEN after the intended resolution of that plot.
Don't be confused if I start referring to the tunnels as Epsilon and Gamma
Also, I'm predicting at some point I'm going to slip and write Rikku instead of Victoria, she had her planning name for a while and it's kind of stuck in my head.
