Getting sedated is getting old quickly, even if this is only the second time. At least as far as you can remember. Who knows the side effects of whatever they use.

“Papa, don't le-,” you shout. You stop mid-sentence when you're shaken awake by your shoulders. A brown-haired and bearded head passes out of your vision as soon as your eyes snap open. You wonder where you are now.

This is the third time you've woken up to unfamiliar surroundings. Like the first time, you're in a compartment full of children. It's a space much shorter in length, but about the same width. The ceiling is lower as well. A red light provides a bit of illumination. A quick head count gives you sixteen including yourself, eight facing eight on opposite sides of the cabin. The man who woke you, wearing navy robes, goes down the aisle and wakes the others likewise from drugged sleep.

As he progresses, you check yourself. You're wearing black fatigues again, this time with the top as well and with a light flak vest over it. There are two bags on your person, one slung on your back and one on your front. The latter is bigger, a short sword strapped securely on one side. A helmet is fit snugly on your head.

Several of the other children shout out as you did as they are awakened, yelling at a parent. Once all of you are awake, the drill abbot goes to one end of the compartment where the wall is slanted, raises his voice over the noise of jet engines and says:

"Zeta Company, squads 7 and 8. Welcome to your first training exercise. You will cross the forest to get back to the Schola. You have 7 days. Regular lessons and training will start on the 8th day. These two squads will be competing against each other. First squad to get back will be excused from menial duties. Oh, and we've stocked the forest with a surprise or two."

He then pauses, takes out a dataslate, and starts reading off it, resuming:

"Squad 7, you're jumping out first. You will hear a beeping in your helmet. When you do, you will pull your ripcord, the handle on the right strap of the bag on your back. Cadets Akkbel, Ambrosius, Davine, de Fuentes, Emee, Geffen, Ischoron, And Pyler, the eight of you form squad 7."

The drill abbot slams a gauntleted fist on a button behind him. The red light turns green and the slanted wall begins to gape open.

"Be my guest!", says the abbot over the increased roar.

You hesitate a bit. No one gets up.

“Any day now, squad 7. You've only got a week. What about this: first one out is squad leader!”

Squad 7. So that's you. You only recognize three other names, that of your roommate, Sabbatine, and Sabbatine's roommate. You try to pick out their faces, but everyone looks the same in the helmets.

You rise out of your seat and into the aisle. Squad leader will be yours. The ramp becomes fully open as you break into a run. Someone else tries to beat you to it, but he was further down than you. Up the aisle and out the back, you can barely make out one last yell from the drill abbot as you propel yourself into the sky.

“Oh, and try not to break your legs when you land. You're using a parachute, not a grav-chute.”

You glance behind you as you fall to see the rest of the squad following you down. You chuckle to yourself when two of them seem to be bodily thrown out at once. They scramble in mid-air, attempting to right themselves.

Before long, you hear the aforementioned beeping noise in one ear. You reach to your right shoulder and pull on the metal ring handle. You're suddenly jerked back, and you look up to see a large canopy unfolding above you. As you're about to land, you remember the words of the drill abbot. You are falling from a great height, after all. You shift your legs a bit as you land.

You're on a sandy beach, forest to your left, a large body of water to your right. The canopy of the parachute trails behind you, part of it in the water. The rest of your squad lands shortly after you, and the aircraft from which you jumped moves off, taking squad 8 to a different drop zone. There are other aircraft as well that move off as they deposit their first loads.

You no longer need the parachute, so you remove it, then shift the bag on your front to your back to replace it. The helmet isn't too comfortable, one size too big, so you remove that as well, releasing your blonde hair from out of it. You then address your squad.

“Guess I'm squad leader then. I jumped out first, right? Form up and let's move out! No time to lose.”

“Not so fast!”, is your first reply. The one who jumped out right after you removes his helmet, revealing the face of the boy, “Barty”, who attacked you yesterday morning. Or is it still Emperor's Day? You're not sure, but they sun is about in the middle of the sky at the moment.

He continues, “We have unfinished business, you and I. I, Bartamaeus Geffen, challenge you to a duel for the position of squad leader. I would've gotten out first if not for my position in the cabin! But if you're a coward, I won't be following a girl AND a coward.”

He brandishes a gladius menacingly at you.

10d10 is default, to make it able to apply to all options needing a roll. At least until an attribute gets above 10, then it'll be 20d10. This is in the dice pastebin in the OP>

Leadership: 10, 9, 3, 7 = 4 successes (Critical!)

“What, are you trying to slow us down? Do you want to get menial duty?,” you ask him.

“Yeah, Barty, what the heck...”
“Idiot...”
“You and your stupid honor duels. We're only 12, come on.”

The rest of the squad grumbles assent as they unburden themselves of their parachutes. They all remove their helmets as well. You recognize more faces now. There's the boy from the truck whose shoulder you slept on. There's Sabbatine and her roommate, Alizabeth. The last girl must be Rena Pyler, your roommate. Of course, there's Barty, no, Bartamaeus, and his roommate. You don't recognize the last boy.

“Well, I, uh...okay,” says Barty, clearly put out. He sheathes his blade, hangs his head a bit, awkwardly shuffling backwards away from the center of the group.

“Seeing as I'm squad leader now, I'll need to know everyone's names I guess. I'm new, you see,” you say, bringing your head up to scratch your head. You divert it to tie your hair into a ponytail to conceal the awkward gesture.

“Yeah, we know. All of us have been together here on Loyola since we were kids. Well, except for darky over there,” says Sabbatine, jerking her thumb at the boy who arrived on the shuttle with you. “I'm Sabbatine Emee,” she says to him.

“Jakko Akkbel,” says the boy after Sabbatine addresses him.

“Ander Ischoron.” Bartamaeus's roommate, the boy who came to the window.

“Fortuno Ambrosius.” The boy you don't recognize. “Jakko is my new roommate.”

Bartamaeus stays silent.

“Alizabeth Davine.” Sabbatine's redhead roommate. You met her at the chapel.

“Rena Pyler. I hear we'll be roommates,” the girl you don't recognize says, smiling.>>31676364

You and Bartamaeus both have a gladius with your backpacks. You notice the rest of them also have one of three other weapons. Rena and Fortuno have short spears. Ander and Sabbatine each hold a short -pattern autogun. Jakko and Alizabeth wield hatchets.

All the while, you can hear noises coming from the treeline at the edge of the beach. Might they be from the surprises the abbot mentioned?

You have weapons, what for exactly, you don't know. Ander and Sabbatine both have two magazines of 10 shots each for their autoguns.

The contents of each of your bags are consistent for the most part. There are a few items that aren't the same between the bags. You each have: a wrist chronograph, a blanket, a fixed-blade knife with a compass in the grip, a n empty canteen, and a electric torch. Spread out amongst you are: a single medi-pack, a pack of matches, two tents, a set of cooking equipment, rope, a bottle of white tablets marked “Iodine”, and nigh under 200 white paper packets with the instruction “Add to water and mix.”

Also spread out amongst you were eight pieces of paper. Individually, they are just a bunch of lines and numbers, but quickly you put them together as a map. Good thing you were able to stick together. Marked on the map are your drop zone and the Schola. In between is a large forest. According to the map scale, you cover 130 kilometers to get back. Ander tells you that the far spaced lines on the map indicate that the forest has very little changes in elevation.

You are only able to recover two parachutes. The rest have been dragged under the water by small waves, too water logged to pull out.

What now? You can still hear the noises from the tree line further down the beach, though they seem to have decreased. A few squads on the beach have moved out already, others of them also checking their bags and equipment.
