>So far:
We found out Iori was actually directly responsible for taking Antonia’s salves. He might even be why Rory messed with our bow in the first place. We were never one for round about games of cat and mouse so we repaid him with a straight forward wallop to the gut. Apparently he got rid of the tins of salve by giving them to the local clinic. On our way to gather our two, friends, we spotted some more of Rory’s shady friends skulking around a graveyard. As it turns out, they’re just grounds keepers, we think. Luckily when we thought to ask them if they had heard something about Iori’s business last night, they in fact did know something about it.
>>
>>31651758

The clear morning sky slowly loses it’s stars as the sunrise encroaches, painting this graveyard in pastel colors of orange and blue. Hopefully this is a legitimate lead you stumbled across. The boy you just convinced to help you ruffles his hair back into control after pulling his hood down.

“But you didn’t hear this from me babe, got that?” You nod with a preposterous feeling smile on your face. “Yeah, last night I heard Iori met with the Boss, cat had a donation to make or somethin’.” The boy’s two companions, much taller than him, at at least two or three years older than him, 16 you would guess, approach having finished sweeping the mausoleum clean.

“Meds you said?” The taller of the two older ones says.

“Yes, something to do with endurance I think?” You try flipping your short hair with your left hand. You wonder how long you should keep up the charade.

>Cont.
>>
>>31651772

“Hmm,” the small boy rubs his chin as he thinks, “Boss has owed the father that runs the clinic downtown for a while now. I’ll bet he went and passed off somma the meds over there.” He turns behind him and shrugs with his arms up, prompting the others to nod in agreement.

“Ah, but, well,” you lean over to cup a hand by his ear, “It’s a very embarrassing problem for my friend.” He tenses up, clearing his throat. “If there’s any way I could get a few of them back for her, I could put in a good word with her for you.”

He steps back, nervously laughing a bit before snapping himself back to what he must think is an authoritative posture. Hopefully the poor boy gets a growth spurt soon. “Well, if there’s still any left that the Boss didn’t hand over... It’s gotta be in our basement’s lockup.” He looks you over. “The problem is, our base of operations is kinda a members only type dealie.”

“Will you look the other way for me?” You stand back up and put your hands into your jacket pockets.

“Eh...” He crosses his arms and tilts his head to the side. “Maybe,” His head returns to an upright position and he looks up at you. “What’s in it for me?”

A favor in return makes the most sense, although you aren’t sure you could haggle that given you leave in less than an hour. You DO have a fair amount of crowns, around 25 last you checked, but all of it other than the two you picked up this morning are back at Gil’s. You doubt he would be very interested in any of the hides you’ve brought back from hunts. You can think of one more idea but it’s really stupid and you couldn’t pull it off anyway. You’d have to be someone like Lem.

This had better work.

“What’s in it for you?” You lean in again, this time really close to his face. “You’d get my thanks of course!” And oh gods you did it. Only a quick peck on the cheek, still it was enough to feel his weird oily skin. You try to hide the fact that your hand is quickly covering a smile and not wiping the feeling off your lips.

The shorter of his two companions struggles to contain a laugh, snorting to himself like a pig. The taller one elbows him to get him to stop, with a huge grin on his face. The boy stands there stunned. “Al-alright then.” He fiddles with the collar of his jacket as you see his face get slightly redder. “I can’t just stand here and keep a nice girl like you from helping a friend now can I?”

Why are your ears burning this is stupid. “Thank you so much.” You say. The boy turns around and makes a shooing gesture to the others.

“Hey! Take care of the rest of this!” He pulls a bundle of fresh flowers from his jacket and tosses it to the shorter one. “I gotta take care of this before she leaves in half an hour.” The other two get to work replacing flowers at graves and sweeping leaves and snow off things in earnest. The boy starts walking down one of the paths, waving you over. “Luckily, Tillman manor ain’t far from here.”

>Cont.

>>31653628

“Tillman?” You inquire as you start to follow him.

“The name ain’t important. He’s just some dead guy. The Boss takes care of the place because no one else will.” He makes dismissive gestures with his left hand as he walks ahead of you.

“No one else? It hasn’t been sold or torn down?” He makes a noncommittal groan as he shrugs.

“I really don’t feel comfortable talking about it.” He shakes his head like he just had a chill. “Anyway, it occurs to me I never properly introduced myself, terribly rude.” He slows his pace long enough to walk side by side with you. “You can call me Dell.” He extends his right arm to you.

“Fera.” You take his hand. Yeah, this kid is almost as short as Tobias.

"Would you get into trouble if I followed you to the manor? You did say it was a member's only hangout, right?"
>>
>>31654022

You let go of his arm after a surprisingly firm shake. “Would you get into trouble if I followed you to the manor? You did say it was a member’s only thing right?”

“Heh! I wouldn’t be the only one in trouble.” He ruffles his hair.

“How did your Boss get a hold of a deserted manor in the first place?”

Dell sighs. “Ehh... The Boss’ parent’s knew the old man before he died. I don’t think it was left to him in the will or anything. But anytime the town elders arranged to have it demolished or auctioned off...” He cringes. “I dunno, nobody ever knows. Stuff just happens yanno?”

“Stuff just happens, what stuff?” You cross your arms.

“Accidents! And the more people talk about it the more it seems to happen! Boss is the only person that place likes. It merely tolerates the rest of us.” Dell looks over his shoulder at something he isn’t able to spot.

Wow, a haunted manor? You wonder if it’s legitimate.

“A-anyway! I see two ways around that though.” He looks you over again. “You seem to be good at not being seen, sure as hell snuck up on me and my boys pretty good.”

>Cont.

“It wasn’t that hard honestly.” You shrug.

“It’s still early morning, there shouldn’t be too many people there. If I can cause a distraction, you can sneak in after me. OR, you could be the distraction.”

“How do you mean?”

“Say I come back to the manor, having just found this girl who knocked herself out falling from the fence when she came to snoop on me and my boys.” You take a step away further from him. He puts his hands up in an innocent gesture. “Woah, hey listen to me, you just have to pretend right? I can get into the basement for smelling salts or whatever, just happen to pocket a few of these meds you were talking about, if they’re even there, and send you on your way once you make your miraculous recovery.”

Both of these plans seem to make sense. The whole, pretending to be knocked out thing seems a bit leery to you. You don’t even think he can carry you.

I changed my mind.

Might as well humor him some more.

“I like that plan better, the second one.”

“Good,” he says before quietly mumbling: “I have to answer less questions if we mess up this plan.” He stops by a bush that grows right against the fence now that you two are on the north west side of the graveyard. He pulls it’s branches aside uncovering a hole where several of the iron bars have been cut, leaving only the top end of the fence. “Ladies first.”

There are only a few houses on this street behind the cemetery, as you realise this is the northwestern edge of town. You can see for a good few miles into the forest to the north from the top of the hill the entire town sits on. Off to your left and your right you can see a few stately homes perched against the incline. You hear the bush rustle again as you turn to see Dell cross the fence and push the branches back into place.

“I’ve never seen this much of the forest around Lukewater before.” You say while trying to overlay the route you’re taking soon over the expanse of trees and mountains.

“I thought you were some kind of hunter, Gil’s prodigy even.” Dell says as he pats dead leaves off his coat.

>Cont.
>>
>>31655953

“Well, I mean, I’ve never seen this much of it all at once. I’ve never been to this corner of town before I don’t think.”

“Hmm... Well, this is the fence. And the manor ain’t to far from here.” You turn to see him reaching into his jacket and fishing for something. “Here.” He pulls out a small piece of rolled paper that feels like it has a powder in it. “You wouldn’t happen to have any water on you would you? A waterskin or somethin’?”

“Uh, no?” You start to untwist one end of the packet. He gestures at you to stop.

“That’s fine, spit makes it more realistic anyway.” He takes a moment, making weird faces as he chews on something. Then he tears one of the ends off the small packet and tips a small bit of it in his mouth. He holds a finger up to you as he continues mixing it, then turns and spits a brilliantly red splatter into the snow near the fence.

“You get the idea right?” He says. You nod. “Alright then,” he produces a kerchief from another pocket and spits the excess dye into it, “I’m guessing you’d rather use your own spit. Just try to make it look like you busted your nose. A little bit of it coming from your mouth could help, like you bit your tongue, but try not to have too much of that. Kinda doesn't make sense if you just knocked yourself out.”

>Cont.
>>
>>31656338

You softly chew on your tongue a bit to well up more saliva. Following the same process he did, the dye tastes oddly sweet, like if a sponge stone was pulverized and mixed in with dried out icing. Eventually you have the stuff everywhere. Dell starts to pass you the kerchief, but then bundles it back up and shrugs apologetically. You settle for pulling a glove off your left hand so you don’t get it all over the glove while painting your face with the thick dye. You manage to clean most of it off your hand in the snow and put the glove back on.

“Wow, that actually looks pretty grizzly. Good job!” He gestures at the snow near the splotch of fake blood, before turning around and cupping his hands around his mouth. “HEY! DONNEL! KENNETH! GET THE FUCK OVER HERE!” You jump slightly at how loud the small boy is able to bellow.

“Woah what the hell?” You hear the taller one say.

“I dunno man! She was just! Oh gods she’s out cold man! She tried to jump the fence!” He paces shaking his hands.

“The hole’s right over there Dell!” The shorter one says.

“Fuckin’ I know I was just showin off alright?! Shit man we need to get her out of the cold! Help me with this!” Dell crouches down and starts to pull on one of your arms, thankfully the unhurt one.

“Is she even alive?” You hear the short one say as one of them grabs your other arm.

“Hey don’t you godsdamn put that jinx on me man, shes fine alright? I just can’t wake her up!” Your arm starts to light up with pain as you get pulled to your dangling feet. “Let’s just get her to the manor alright?”

You fight the urge to sniffle or twitch as your head is gently moved and someone opens one of your eyes.

“Ay man she’s out.” He lets go of your head and you let it flop against the taller one’s back.

“You fuckin’ done playing detective Kenneth? C’mon let’s get her inside!” You open one eye to see where you’re going as you feel who must be Donnel shift you with a jump to better heft you. All you can see without moving your head are his white hide trimmed boots and the snow on the path leading from the edge of the hill and the cemetery.

“So what’s your play here anyway? You hear and feel Donnel say.

“What play? My play is getting Gil’s kid out of the snow and fixed up so he don’t put one between my eyes when he gets back in a month.” You hear lots of fabric rubbing against itself as Dell is no doubt wildly gesturing.

“C’mon D we saw the way you two were talkin’ back there.” Kenneth says.

“Don’t! Don’t call me D you pin head!”

“Hey we were both there,” Donnel says, “She even kissed you what the hell was that?”

>Cont.

There’s a long pause before Dell says anything. “Was fuckin’ nothin’ man, you know how it do.”

You bounce slightly as Donnel laughs. “She’s playing you, you know that right?” You do your best not to panic.

“Do you even think Gil’s kid is, at all, even remotely interested in you.” The other one chimes in.

“What you sayin’ she’s queer?”

“No I’m saying she’s in it for the trees.” Kenneth continues. You hear the sound of someone slapping a thick jacket. “What just cause a shrimp like you isn’t able to reel her in she’s funny all a sudden?” More laughter rocks you slightly, you actually have to hold back a giggle yourself.

“Fuck you man, fuck you too! Let’s just get inside already.” You actually see Dell’s feet standing by some steps as Donnel stops and spins slightly to face the others.

You seem to have traveled half a mile down the street. You don’t see anything more than the floors and walls as the four of you enter. The entire place is creaky and smells dusty. At least it’s warm. You hear a few other voices, five you think, as you are carried up a flight of stairs and eventually plopped into a surprisingly clean bed.

“Alright, shit, ok I’m gonna go get some stuff to clean up her face. Donnel, you stay at the door, make sure the lookie loos keep their distance. Kenneth, head out and bring some water back.”

Dell’s voice is surprisingly authoritative once he’s calmed down.

You hear a lot of hushed conversations. Directly referencing you more than a few times, It’s always something like “Gil’s kid,” “The spook,” or simply “Walker”. Donnel shoos away somebody twice, and in not long Kenneth shows back up. You can clearly hear the sloshing water in a bucket as he heads up the stairs, each step creaking. Dell must have shown up as well, you hear him dismiss Kenneth. He quietly whispers to you as he starts cleaning the dye off your face with a moist towel.

“Sorry about this, kinda a spur of the moment plan and all.” You open your eyes and see him dip the rag in the water again. “Ok, so in a few minutes, I’m gonna get restless and suggest we get the smelling salts to wake you up. That should be enough reason for me to get my hands on the key to the basement.”

You slowly crane your head over to look out the door way, Donnel stands in it with his back to the two of you. You silently reach into your jacket for the tin of salve you got from Antonia. “Here, this is one of them.” Dell pockets it quickly while looking out the doorway.

“Nice, that save me a whole lotta time.” He continues dabbing your face. “Almost done here.”

>>
>>31657927

He finishes cleaning your face soon. Minutes pass as you hear a few conversations carry back up. Most of it is about town matters. Almost like you were sitting in some weird version of a town hall meeting. Voices that can’t be more than a few years older than you speak to each other about the failing roofing of many of the homes south of Bell. You hear talk of the Clinic Iori and Dell mentioned again. Apparently it’s run by a father Utkin.

Dell sits in a chair across from you in the room. He periodically stands back up to walk outside and talk to someone before coming back inside and pretending to fret. Finally he gets up one last time and you hear him talk to someone about getting into the basement. He’s referred to a slightly older female voice who agrees with him.

More minutes pass, you wonder how long you have now. Finally Dell shows up again, he carries what looks like an antique sprayer. He turns his back to the door as he pulls three new tins including the one you gave him out of his coat. They fit neatly in the pockets you had sewn into the inside of your jacket.

>Cont.

Finally he leans over the bed slightly with the sprayer in his hands. “This is going to suck, sorry in advance.”

It does. You reflexively snap upward to get a better position to cough in. The mixture is horrid and takes a good minute of sneezing and sniffling to get it all out. Donnel passes you a glass of water as you clear your watering eyes. You see a third person immediately in the room, she must be the girl you heard speaking earlier. She wears a lumpy looking cap on top frizzy hair, you would place her age at 18 at least.

“How’s your head?” Dell finally says.

“And where is that?” You rub your eyes.

“The north edge of Lukewater. D says you took a spill back at the cemetery.” You see Dell roll his eyes. “What were you doing there?”

They’re creepy!” Dell looks aghast. Donnel snickers to himself along with a few other voices you hear in the hallway.

The girl stares at you, then sighs and rolls her eyes. “Can you walk on your own?” You swing your feet off the bed to stand.

“Yeah, I’m fine now.” You stand up and stretch your arms. The girl looks behind her to all the people crowded in the hallway. A single look gets them to scatter like rodents.

“You got somewhere to be this morning don’t you? D, make sure Fera here gets to town hall without passing out again.” He grumbles quietly at her before looking to you and giving an apologetic shrug. She and Donnel step back out of the doorway as you make your way out.

Just as you pass the frame, the girl slips and knocks into you, catching you just before you hit the ground and helping you back up. “Woah, sorry.” She props you back up and pats your shoulders. You nod and hurry as nonchalantly as you can to the stairs down. Almost out of here.

I just stirred up the hornet's nest. Trying to fight everyone here just isn't a good idea.

>No matches, height 8 to get down the stairs.

You don’t have time to see if Dell lines up the kick straight. You roll for the slim space under the bannister and the floor, but you stop cold when a foot comes down right on your chest. If it weren’t for the way the impact seems to spread evenly across your entire ribcage, that might have knocked the wind out of you.

>Fera takes one SHOCK damage.

You shove the foot back with your left arm and grab the rail with the other, legs bunching up ready to kick or defend yourself from another stomp like that. You see Dell fleeing entirely, ducking out of the hallway. You’re close enough to the edge that she can’t stop you again, but she could still get a hit in on your way out. There seems to be a commotion on the first floor but you don’t have enough time to glean any more information than there being a handful of hoodrats down there now.

3 option. See if we can scare them all away.

>7d10 get rollan!

Also I feel I should tell you, the group of hoodrats on the bottom floor are mechanically a group of minions. They have different rules regarding combat. Basically they are treated as a single entity.

Rolled 5, 3, 4, 4, 3, 10, 1 = 30

Well, this is fubared anyway.

Just to let you know. I thought about making an intimidation check right from the start of this conflict. Pretend to smash a tin if I don't leave out of the manor in one piece. Had a second thought and didn't commit.

You slink under the bannister to drop on somebody. Your left bracer takes a hit as she kicks at you, It throws off your aim a bit but you still manage to land on somebody’s back knee first.

>Fera takes one SHOCK damage
>Fera’s 2x4 set was busted, and she falls back to her 2x3 set.

You see at least eight people down here, you drop onto somebody wearing a bright orange coat. He breaks your fall well enough, when you kick off him to stand back up you can see him already starting to get back up. Your feel blood racing through your body and beating in your ears as you look around the long wide hallway in front of the foyer you landed in. Six people block your way out the front door, the other two are in the large hallway behind you.

It strikes you as odd it’s so cold in here. You see bits of snow carrying across the floor’s tiles in your odd moment of introspection.

You look back up, crouching down with your arms up ready to defend yourself. No one is looking at you at all. They all stare down the foyer at the front door. You follow suit.

>Cont.

Morning light pours in through the open front doors. You see glints of it reflecting off frighteningly fast blades that scrape and creen and push the group of hood rats back like fire drives back vermin.

You only catch glimpses the figure and their blades as they expertly thrust and impose with their blades, causing one to jump back and crouch. The dance they are forced into brings their head right into the same arc as the hilt of one of the blades as the short woman brings her fist back behind her to knock him flat.

The others clear out of the way as he slides across the tiles. The tallest one takes a step back. pointing a single finger at the girl.

“T-t-the witch!”

>FULL STOP.

I say she has a lot of utility. A lot. But all this shock damage. Man. We haven't even started the Forging yet.
>>
Normally I would have mentioned Micas roll in there but, that would have just ruined the cool.

Mica took a die penalty to do nonleathal damage with her blades, then spent two willpower to pump that pool up to 6d10

She landed a SICKNASTY 3x6 set which by the rules disabled/demoralized Width (3) in minions.

Sweet. Jesus. I'm so glad of having terrible rolls just to have all of that lucj happen there.
>>
So... how does healing damage work inthis system?
>>
>>31661087
A lot of the specifics on natural healing and first aid use are muddied by not tracking hit locations.

HOWEVER, what I'm rolling with is:
1: A night's rest heals 3 Shock damage.
2: First aid rolls heal width in Shock damage, with the difficulty increasing by three each subsequent successful attempt.

The rest of the rules are by the book:
Failed first aid checks still cause one point of shock damage. And Killing damage simply cannot be fixed with first aid checks. That takes either A: super natural healing ablities. Or B: A skilled doctor and proper equipment, which generally takes hours, and merely converts Killing damage to Shock damage.

Bed rest can change Killing damage to Shock damage at a rate of 1 per WEEK.

It's called Killing damage for a reason.

Talk about brutal. What happens if Fera gets all those squares filled up with shock damage?
>>
>>31661193
K.O. In that case a character would remain unconscious until at least one of their boxes heals.

If knocked unconscious Fera can gamble half her current willpower and make an Endurance check. A successful check gets her on her feet for Width in rounds. Failing this check halves her current willpower and she continues to be unconscious.

Willpower can also be used to keep her from dying from Killing damage maxing out her hit boxes. One point staves off death for one round.

Altho if that should happen She will automatically burn points of Base Will instead, which keep her alive for an hour each.

Battery dying. Gotta call it.
