>So far:
On the way to find Rory and sort out this business with the stolen salves finally, you Mica and Nolan have split up. You went yourself to town hall thinking you could find Iori there, as he’s likely to have gathered his charges this morning as well. You bumped into Rory just before entering, it seems she’s been meaning to speak with him as well. She says that it was actually Iori who is the culprit. Whoever is responsible, Rory is set on confronting him.
>>
>>31630048

“‘E said ‘e was gonna take care of it ‘imself. Alright? I ‘ad nothin’ to do with it.” Rory says as she repositions her scarf.

“You know I don’t care one way or another if you’re lying, I just want to find where you hid them.”

Rory steps up to you. “We can go ask ‘im together like, I’ve been meanin’ to talk to the git about this crap anyway.”

“Oh, well uh, that works then.” Rory’s death glare manages to cut through her fluffy bangs

“Ah’m up for a little fun ‘n games an all that. But Iori was buggin’ the ‘ell outta me even before ‘e crossed the line like this.” Rory seats a loose end of her scarf back into the wrap around her neck, and starts for the front door of the main hall.

It occurs to you that she never admitted to cutting your bowstring, as it was never brought up. Then again she could just be trying to pass off blame to Iori. Either way, she seems genuinely agitated as she pushes through the door.

>Cont.
>>
>>31630064

When you enter the main hall of the town hall building, you can see four people are already here. Off to the back wall, two older scouts that work for Gil have what looks like the parts of crossbows laid out across a table. Closer to the front doors, Iori sits at a table with a map on it. The boy with the black braid in his hair, who you saw last night at the lake later in the day, stands on the other side of the table and starts to leave after exchanging a few words with Iori.

Spotting you and Rory, he twists his eyebrows quizzically. “Morning Ro’.”

“Alex.” Rory nods once and continues walking to Iori’s table. He stops as he watches Rory continue past him, then turns to you.

“Am I missin’ something here?” He rubs a bandage attached to his right cheek.

Sigh... Been gone all day due to an emergency. Back at home. Sad to see that this quest hasn't progressed while I was away.
>>
>>31631523

“There’s something going on with your captain I think.” You say. “If you don’t have to leave immediately I would rather you stick around.”

“I can spare a few minutes, yeah...” Alex steps back and starts to turn to Rory, giving you another look, apparently gauging your intent here.

When you step up aside Rory, Iori looks back up from the map and a ledger he was scribbling in. A small flick of his head swings his long hair out of his face. If it weren’t for his stiff demeanor and harsh voice, you imagine he would be confused for a girl quite easily.

“Hmm? Oh, Morning Wintercast...” He looks to Rory first, then you. “Walker as well.” He sits up straighter in his chair and puts down his pen. “I don’t remember inviting you to the orientation but, the more the merrier I suppose.”

“So ‘ow did your litt’le operation go last night oh captain my captain?” Rory leans forward and puts her hands on the table.

“Well, I’d say...” His eyes narrow as he looks between the two of you, more confused than irritated. “A heat-stone is quite a bit more I expected from the alchemist’s little game, although I could have gone without the scratches.”

“I was thinkin’ more on the lines of those tins you STOLE last night.” Rory’s posture grows more prickly as she leans forward over the table. Iori’s gaze solidifies as the uninterested expression on his face switches to an incredulous grimace.

Sweet. :D

It's going to be a hot summer, so I'm a bit envious that you have a pool. LOL
>>
>>31632630
If you mean this in like a sorta good cop bad cop thing then yeah charm would be applicable, otherwise it would be intimidation

Fera doesn't have any applicable Charm skills so a persuasion check would be her flat charm at 3d10

Even while she DOES have a die in intimidation, that pool only adds up to 3d10 as well.

Same dice pools for either, and you would get a +1 from Rory, but the two slants would have different effects.

You step in aside Rory, hands out and open. “There won’t be any trouble if you just hand them back.” Rory looks at you and backs off slightly. “Once this is sorted out we can all laugh about it later.” Iori releases the grasp on the table you just noticed he had.

“I...” Iori leans back and rubs his forehead. “Don’t know what you’re talking about, but I did hear something about the clinic south of Bell receiving new supplies just this morning.”

“Bullshit!” Rory swats the map off the table and starts to climb over it when Alex grabs her by the scarf and pulls her back. “OI! Let go of me!” She continues to struggle, accidentally swatting him in the face, right over the bandage. He lets go of her immediately and she calms down once she realises he’s in pain. She looks away while straightening out her pea coat with sharp quick motions. Looking back to you, and then Iori she says: “You knew alla’ that was meds and you still ran off with them? Pawned them off even?”

“At this point I don’t care who did what, Antonia needs the salves, and it’s almost sunrise.” You say, picking the map back off the ground.

“It’s out of my hands at this point Walker,” he stands up, cautiously watching Rory as he speaks to you, “I’m sure if you took her to the clinic, they could treat her. You know the priest that runs it doesn’t charge for his help.”

“Why did you do this? You could have easily done something simpler. And certainly a lot less dangerous!” You pass the map back to him after rolling it up.

“What business does someone who needs enough salves for ten men have taking on the Forging?” He stands up. “As a captain no less?”

You hate to admit it to yourself, but he does seem to have a point. Even if that point is muddied a bit by his reckless disregard for her safety. And the law, you think that many tins of the salve would be very expensive. “What business do you have outright stealing from people? People who are sick even?”

His eyes turn down to the map in his hands. “How sick is she?”

Oh, now he shows remorse.

“What? Did you think she was trying to cheat? You go and sabotage her before she could attempt it?” You press the heels of your hands into your temples. “By the hunt this is pathetic!” He start to say something but you shout back down his throat. “Is winning this silly game really going to be the hallmark of your life? What you did to my equipment is one thing,” you step back, exhaling to center yourself again, “and I’m not even angry about that, but this...” You glare at him. “This is despicable.”

You can hear your own breath slowing as the room becomes unbearably silent. Iori’s tongue maneuvers in his mouth silently as he attempts to formulate a response. Nevermind this. You turn and start walking out with a huff.

“Good luck,” you say to Alex and Rory as you pass them, “you’ll need it.”

“Walker!” You stop as you hear Iori call your borrowed name, but you don’t turn. “If she really is sick enough for you to explode like this, can you really condone letting her leaving?”

“You know how dangerous it’s been the last few years!” Iori steps away from his table, brushing the hair out of his face. “Unless you know a way to prevent her from leaving...” He gestures with his hands apart. “One of us is going to have to keep an eye on her group. It’s been ten years since Lukewater has lost anyone to the Forging.” He calmly walks to you with a serious look on his face. “You don’t want that to change any more than I do right?”

Generally, when it comes to attacks, the width of the roll (the number of matching dice) Is how fast and hard the hit is. The height (The result of said matching dice) is the location of the hit, or it's accuracy.

I'm not handling seprate hit locations here but generally most of the lower numbers are either legs or arms, MOST of the numbers in the middle are the torso, and 10 is the head. 10's do double damage in this case where as they would normally strike the head hit location, which only has 4 hitboxes

Three more rolls!

>>31635615
Com'on, buddy! Keep on rolling!
>>
>>31635649
FURTHER mechanics explanation: Generally multiple matches in a single roll do not mean a whole lot. If an opposing force/character was also rolling against you, taking any damage from their attacks would knock a single dice from your highest set, which is the only one you are using usually.

So if it was a 3 wide set it would be downgraded to a 2 wide set, happening later, and with less power

Say we had gone with your first entirely rolled set, and Iori had somehow been expecting the punch, and hit you first. your 2x6 set would have been busted, but you still had a 2x2 to fall back on.

You can actually use multiple sets from a roll if you declare to split actions before hand, doing so removes a single die from the set before you roll, and technically you can continue splitting actions until you have literally not enough dice to succeed even once. I wouldn't suggest this.

Anyway, feel free to add modifiers or suggest entirely different rolls when looking trough the choices i put forth.

>2x1 to SUCKER PUNCH

You hiss as you step forward quickly. Your gloved fist connects soundly with the soft parts just under his ribcage. Iori’s face twists as he crumples to the floor. You were hoping to hit the nerve cluster there that would have knocked the wind out of him.

Your arm and most of your back pulse with pain. The bruised muscles must have thrown your aim off. Iori coughs on the floor as you wring out your hand. You leave without any further words.
You think you hear someone clapping as you exit to the still morning outside.

Sister was out here, she hops out of the window. You give her a pained expression. “He totally deserved it right?”

Sister flicks her tail dismissively. She wonders where the least humiliating place to heal him from would have been. Her ears perk back up, mocking you.

“Shut up!” You actually say it out loud, laughing. Sister continues to stare at you for as long as she can while she turns around to head back to her post.

You look up back to the sky. The stars are starting to wink out as the sun gathers strength. Not much time left now.

You head to rory’s home to find Nolan first, as you’re already on the north side of town. You see more people up and about now, most of them scooping snow away from their doorways. There's a handful of shops here, all specialist artisans that would rather not compete with bright paint and slogans. Otherwise it's mostly homes.

At one point you see a few shifty types hop the graveyard’s fence. They’re all locals, the type that Rory hangs out with. It’s likely they’re just taking a shortcut or something, but it IS strange you think.

You’ve never spent enough time in town to know whether or not this is usual activity for these people, but sneaking into a graveyard seems like it warrants investigation. If Iori was trying to get Rory to cause trouble, maybe he was making deals with the rest of her, friends? acquaintances seems more apt.

You stop and walk closer to the fence. There’s three of them, all wearing coats large enough to obscure any details other than their heights. Based on their heights you would guess two of them are at least 16, you can’t be sure how much younger the small one is. They all seem to be carrying something but you can’t quite see at this distance.

You check quickly that there’s no one around to see you hop the fence as well. There isn't, and you grab the wrought iron and propel yourself over the fence with ease. It feels somewhat odd to stalk prey you don’t intend on perforating. Many of the tombstones and tombs littered across the large graveyard give ample cover to dart from.

You stop at the steps of a sepulchre as the three stop in front of one of the mausoleums. The largish building has an open entrance and seems to contain cremated remains, or perhaps just plaques.

None of them seem to be aware of you as they, get to work cleaning it, apparently. The little one even produces fresh flowers from their coat and starts replacing a few of the wilted frozen ones in front of many of the tombstones around the building.

The other two enter the building and kick up a plume of dust as you hear sweeping sounds.

Huh.

You walk out from the corner and quietly walk up near them. Trying to not be too quiet. The small one glances at you as, he, goes around tossing the dead flowers into a bucket. He continues to pick a few more flowers before glancing again and being startled this time.

“FUCK!” He slips on the smooth stone of a flat headstone in the ground and lands in a heap. The jostling knocks his hood back and you can see he appears to be about 12 or 13. The two others poke their heads out of the mausoleum.

“Morning, didn’t mean to startle you.” You step forward to help the boy up. He scampers backwards two feet before getting up quickly.

“Woah! Hey! Hi whattar you doing here?” He snaps his hood back into place while looking back to the others.

“Hey isn't that Gil’s kid?” One of the others says.

“Yeah, she’s one of the captains this forging.” The shorter one says.

“Oh yeah, hey I do recognize you!” The boy excitedly bounces on his feet before regaining his composure and posturing in a slightly confrontational way. “You just here to pay respects? We’re kinda busy here babe.”

“Actually, I was wondering if any of you or your friends had seen Iori sneaking around last night.” The boy’s crabby facade drops for a moment. A bit of shock flits across his face before he bristles again.

“Why you askin?”

I capped the amount of dice that can be added to pools at 2. Besides, 2x8 is pretty good

That sounds fair.

He seems to act kinda the same way Nolan did when he first met you, you can probably use this to your advantage. The only problem is you don’t really know how to do that.

Who do you know that IS like that? Mica? Nah, she seems to creep people out. Even you sometimes, despite how nice and outgoing she turned out to be. Lem? Now that you think of it Lem might be the person you know the best other than Da’. Lem is, attractive, people like her, what would she do?

>2x8 to butter him up.

You step to the side, looking off as you rub the side of your neck. “Well, I have a very sick friend that needs her medicine back,” you adopt a lost looking face, “and I know that Iori stole it from her last night...” It seems to be working, the smaller boy drops his shoulders slightly as he listens to you. “You guys know Rory right? She’s in Iori’s group and I figured you may have heard something from her.” The boy pulls a hand out of his pockets to straighten his hood.

“I might have heard something...” He squints at you as he tries to gauge your intentions. His posture softens regardless.

“Well, she wasn't very happy when she found out what he did. I’d bet she would appreciate it if someone were able to help my friend. I know I would.” You really hope the smile you’re wearing doesn’t look as fake as it feels.

The boy looks back to the others, the taller one seems to think something is awful funny about this. He elbows the other one and gives a thumbs up, the taller one following suit. “Yeah, I might have heard something about some meds last night.” The small boy pulls back his hood and smiles. “But you didn’t hear this from me babe, got that?”

Perfect place to stop and an awfully nice cliffhanger to boot. Thanks for running the thread. I had a lot of fun.

Sweet Jesus. Good thing I'm free tomorrow. I think. Well, nothing will keep me away from this quest anyway.

Glad to hear it! Hopefully Fera can get to the bottom of this tomorrow.

Eh. Me too. Been through a lot already and the main plot hasn't started yet. I bet a lot of people from /a/ would complain about the quest's pace if it was an anime. But this "Arc" has been good at highlighting everyone's character. Hell. I know Touma would be proud after our "justice" speech and swift right handed punch.

I know I'm happy with how Fera's personality is starting to develop. I know that seems like a stupid thing to say as her writer. But still, all my narrative chops stem from GMing so...

Also I'm glad this beginning part doesn't seem useless to you, this whole getting to know everyone bit is exactly why I packed so much crap into the day before Fera leaves.

Not any particular reason Lukewater couldn't have been fleshed out afterward, not certainly not.

LOL @ spoiler

Well, it isn't useless. There's quite a bit of character development and a little bit of action thrown in. Its going to be great when the Forging begins. Have a good night. I'm off since my battery is now dying.
