You have sailed for six days through the darkness of the Void.

In the distance, Venia has slowly shrunk to a tiny point of flickering light, no larger than any star in the vast deep. The sun, though is still the same. A reference point fair enough to tell you haven't moved a truly incredible distance. But far enough.

Everyone stands on the bridge of the Nemesis, staring out the front window. The island looms ahead.

It radiates with Order. You've never felt anything like it. It is pure, and total. And it's huge. Miles and miles wide of rock and protruding steel. The Nemesis is a tiny ant, crawling up a massive mound.

As you approach, something in the island shifts. A metallic arm stretches out, pulsing with violet light. The Nemesis glows with the same light.

"What's going on?" Donovan asks.

"I don't know!" Auriel says. "I'm not doing anything. The ship's moving on its own!"

Slowly, the Nemesis meets the arm. The end clamps onto the side of the hull. The floor rocks under your feet.

And then you're drawn in, slowly, until you're just adjacent to the might island.

"...we've docked," Auriel says. "That was our left main hatch."

"That's impossible," Hemmelus says. "The Cirrus - the Nemesis, now - it's never left Venia. How could it dock with the island? They aren't designed for that."

"I have a feeling," Tyrael says, "that Erebus's magic is more flexible than what we're used to."

"Instant modular systems compatibility," Steward says. "Highly disturbing potential."

What do you do?

You look to your allies. "From here, I go alone."

Ila is the first to step up. She shakes her head hard. "I'm not letting you."

"I'm with her," Donovan says.

"Me three," Abigail chimes in.

"No," you say. "No."

"Shadow," Donovan starts, "don't make me give you another - "

"Donovan!" He stops at your shout. "This...is beyond any of us," you say. "There is a real chance I might not...whatever's in there, whatever's waiting for me - I must confront it by myself. The risks are too great. I'm glad you're all here. Your support means everything to me. But I have my radio. If anything happens, I'll let you know immediately. I'm just going to try and scout things out. See if there's anything hostile."

Donovan lets out his breath, and nods. "...ok."

------
------

The hatch opens.

A long hall presents itself to you. Metal plates and wiring shows overhead, but the seal with the hatch is airtight. The metal has molded itself to the Nemesis perfectly.

Holding yourself in readiness, you slowly move forward. Your allies shut the hatch behind you. They'll be waiting at the entrance point - just in case.

Soon enough, you cross the threshold to the bowels of the island.

The only light is the ambient glow of Order. It's extremely dark. But then, you never needed light to see.

<Ok. Right. Um...what is the barrier repair plan?>

>Barrier Repair Plan involves the hard removal of excess Chaotic Energies, External Features resulting thereof, followed by conference of Order Energies via User biological interface directly into the barrier

Well, that doesn't mean much to you right now. Maybe you'll think of more in a bit.

You try to think like Erebus. When you tried to access Vigil back in his palace, it rejected you on the grounds that it detected chaos. That could be a little dangerous.

<What...would the standard procedure be, say, for hypothetical chaos corruption?>

>Chaotic energies would be compensated for during the completion program.

<How so?>

>Detecting...
>System detects significant chaotic energies in User. System cannot predict outcome of involvement of chaotic energies.

<What? Why not?>

>User typically used procedural programming to enable system to react to changing variables without external input. However, as per the Fulhaust Doctrine, codified within Legislative Designation 145,092R-b, full Artificially Intelligent existences are illegal. Hence, User forms the intelligence core of this unit.

<What does that mean?>

>In effect, this Unit cannot predict the outcome of the measures this unit will take, because these variables result from input that the User must provide. If the User inputs both Order and Chaos energies, outcome is unknown.

So. It comes down to this.

Your own mind is the crux on which Vigil's systems turn. You are pretty much yourself. You're confident you'd be you...no matter what happened.

But you have a feeling Erebus wouldn't just vanish into the night without leaving something behind.

Maybe Vigil isn't understand you.

<Define the term, Human.>

>Human: Biological sentient creature, species, Homo Sapiens.
>Humans are bipedal primates that originally evolved on the Home Planet, Earth.

You see the image of a naked man and woman sitting in your head. They look human enough.

<...Earth is a place?>

>Earth: The third planet from the sun in the Sol System, home to the human species.

An image flashes through your mind. You see stars fly by. An zoomed-out perspective of a big yellow star floats in your head. Several rocks orbit it. Earth is labeled as the third in a row, along with coordinates relative to the galactic center...whatever that is.

<...alright. Then what's on the Nemesis?>

>Existences located on currently docked ship, Callsign Nemesis, are chaotic energy points linked to the chaotic core within the barrier, contained by biological units of order.

<They aren't human?>

>User Erebus theorized that they are replicas of humans derived from Chaos. Natural humanity did not come into being spontaneously through either chaos or order energies, but evolved over geological timescales.

You...you can't understand what it's saying, exactly, but you get the gist.

Humanity isn't from Venia. And the humans that live there now...they aren't the originals.

You don't know what to think anymore.

But the barrier needs to be repaired, and you're sure that Erebus's energies can get the job done.

But what waits for you in Vigil's depths?

What do you do?

Anyway, chaos pretty much means entropy in this case, but if the chaos leaks out of the barrier and consumes the entire universe then everything will become perfectly chaotic, hence perfectly orderly.

<Vigil, I encountered another ship out in the Void. Tell me about it.>

You project an impression of the ship at the walls around you.

>Analyzing...
>Ship is identified as a typical vessel of the (self-termed) chosen. The chosen are fundamentally similar existences to those on-board the Nemesis and on Venia, having also been spontaneously generated by chaos and order energies. However, their distance from the core of the barrier makes them much more similar to originally evolved humans. They live upon two islands orbiting the barrier, opposite Venia, termed by their capitals, Avankt and Veldinsk.

>User intended to use them as a means of controlling any solar traffic exiting Venia while repairs were made.

You find an impression pushed into your head, a greater diagram of Venia and the barrier, as if zoomed out at great distance. The two dark islands are marked clearly.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_TrJZUOTDws

But there is another question beneath all the others. A question that terrifies you. The one you've been dreading.

<Vigil...>

>Ready to receive User input

It almost starts responding to you as soon as you think the words. Scary.

<...what...am I?>

>User: Name, Andersen, Erebus. Citizen Registry Number 1983490198232
>Born: 4705 A.D., 1967 N.C., Vempt 0.5b Merchant Arcology

<Am I human?>

>You are a human, modified with a hard link to the LUEG to spontaneously gather and manipulate order energies.

<What is the...uh...Loog?>

>LUEG: Lower Universal Energy Grid

and this will give us the power to....

> conference of Order Energies via User biological interface directly into the barrier

...heroically sacrifice ourselves by becoming a part of the Barrier over the Breach
>>
<...what happened to them?>

>Humanity, as a civilization, choose to ascend to a higher energetic form of existence to avoid the eventually entropic collapse of the universe. You elected to stay behind in duty, observing and protecting the barrier retaining chaos energies. To this end, you were modified to your current form.

<...how long have I been doing this?>

>Mission: Vigil began approximately 3 million, 347 thousand, 156 years prior to the current date.

"Elements," you whisper. "When was I born?"

>Approximately 3 million, 271 thousand, 156 years prior to the current date. Mission: Vigil began after the final stages of the Chaos War.

<What was the Chaos War?>

>The Chaos War was a battle of the Human Civilization against an existence of the UUEG that penetrated into three-dimensional space by unknown means. It lasted approximately 28,000 years. After victory, Humanity sealed Chaos within the Barrier.

You don't have to ask to know that the UUEG must be the Upper Universal Energy Grid. "...what happened then?"

>Humanity ascended several hundred years after. The war brought forth the development of the underlying twin energy grids. The LEUG was used to counter the UUEG energies. That same technology resulted in a cultural Renaissance, followed by the mass ascendance, finally solving the entropy problem.

<...and I stayed behind.>

>Correct. Order and Chaos are fundamentally linked. Chaos could not be completely extinguished. Artificial Intelligences, ironically, were outlawed for their notably chaotic behavior. An individual human intelligence was needed to watch the barrier and repair it if the need arose.

<Then I'm at this forever. For Humanity.>

>After fighting in the war, you volunteered, citing disinterest in ascendency.

You have a long time to question Vigil, but you don't have forever to save Venia. Whatever this world is, whatever you are, exactly, you can figure it out later.

Your new home needs you, now. And that's what you're here for.

You follow the path down into the ship.

You pass only two other hallways.

One has a panel that reads "cybernet uplink". The other has a panel reading "library".

But for now, you ignore them. You have all the time in the world in investigate them...later.

Probably.

The final hall looms before you. At its end is a door. It slides open as you approach.
>>
>>31594120
I like this.

I've gotta say, I'm really looking forward to Old Erebus' monologue. Finding out what drove him to take a disciple after millions of years has got to be something interesting.

I want to wildly speculate that David was a natural Human that de-apotheosed for some reason, sans memories, explaining why Erebus would suddenly take interest.

I don't understand. If the entropy problem is solved, then why is there a need to repair the barrier at all? Alternately a universe of complete chaos can also be looked at as ordered, although it will take infinite time to reach another equilibrium after an instant.

<...I choose...resonance.>

>Initializing....

You hear a hum of energy underneath you.

The console rises up out of the central platform. It begins to rotate around you. Where is moves, Order energy is left behind. It spins, faster, faster, encompassing you into a tube of bright violet energy.

You feel something ripped out of you.

A shard. It's sent into the air above you, floating. Peace.

You grunt as another is ripped straight out of you. Ardor.

And then Retribution. Maker. Silence. Breeze. Hammer. Resolve.

Humanity leaves you. You're left alone, surrounded by the swirling Order.

And then the shards, arranged in a circle at the edge of the chamber, begin to spin in the opposite direction. And you realize what this room is.

A dynamo.

The rings spin against one another, faster, faster, until the crystallized shards are a blur of black. Lightning cracks between them as the friction between the powers glows. There's a crack that shakes the room, and another, and another, until purple electricity is sparking and snapping against every surface, across your skin, down to the door. It hurts.

You stand on a footbridge the edge of the business sector, where the paved walkways end and green fields begin. The arcology's skies are an artifical blue, like the home planet, apparently. You've seen the pictures, but you've never been.

It's utopia, more or less. You don't really have an appreciation for the old societies, before they knew how to gather enough resources that people didn't have to work if they didn't want to. For you, having what you want, when you want it - and having cyberspace for everything in between - is just a way of life. It's how things are.

You dislike it.

It's like a jacket that never sits quite right. You're always fixing the tag, adjusting it on your shoulders. It bothers you, needles at you. It's nothing to complain about. It's driving you insane.

You're tired of the endless nothing that is life, of social posturing, of being able to do whatever you want and not really having to do anything at all. Where is the challenge? The glory?

You look back on the wars of the ancestors, on the struggle of survival, and wish you could have been there. You were born in the wrong time. You want to be a knight in the joust. You want to be a marine storming an enemy shore under heavy gunfire. You want to be a captain of the great space frigates. Long decomissioned frigates, collecting rust and dust in the museums.

You sigh, and lean forward onto the bridge's railing. The light of the star around which the arcology orbits punctures the blue canvass, a bright white light shaded to mimic the home sun. It's sterile, like skin on hands after scrubbing too hard and too often.

You hear footsteps. You turn. El'lora is there, climbing up the steps. Your sister is young, just 9 years old. Her hair is a yellow-brown blonde. She wears bright contacts to color her eyes gold.

"Hey Erebus."

"Hey Lory."

"Mom and dad said you were going to fight."

"Yeah."

"...do you have to?"

"...no. But I do."

Your little sister steps up next to you and rests her chin on the railing. She folds her arms. "You don't like it here, huh?"

"No." You glance down at her. "How did you know?"

"I can just tell." She hugs your waist. You put your hands around her shoulders. "Promise you'll be careful."

"I will be."

"Promise you'll win."

"...I will win."

"Ok." She looks up at you sharply. "You made a promise. You have to keep it."

"You are the vanguard!"

The First stands at his podium. A speech to motivate the troops. You look up at him, wondering what it is he'll say. You can take a good guess. You're here for a very specific purpose. Despite that, your jaw is clenched, and your muscles are tense. Your training, your efforts - it culminates with this moment. Right here, right now, it begins.

"We tried to reason with them!" The figure with black, shiny eyes and onyx skin pounds the stand. He wears red and black military dress. A dramatic visual aesthetic for a dramatic sort of leader. "We sued for peace. We attempted compromise. But what we did not know is that they neither accept nor understand these concepts. Our diplomatic missions failed. Violently. Repeatedly."

The First sweeps his hand over the rows of soldiers standing at attention. Behind him, docked in the side of the station, is a massive cruiser, over three miles long - just completed. You've been in the simulations for years, but this is the first real one you've ever seen. It is the pinnacle of modern technology. Just building a structure that can withstand the rotational forces of mass that huge would be a feat in and of itself.

"We tried to barter," the First says. "But they took everything. We sent different languages. They ignored them all. We sent songs. They did not listen. We sent gifts. They were consumed, and our generosity promptly forgotten."

>con't
>>
>>31594748
Eh, wouldn't "looked like Abby" be more accurate, considering?
>>
>>31594760
"I'm not obligated to fight, but I still feel like I have to.", more or less.
>>
You feel a rising sense of purpose, the drive that got you through a decade of sims, hazing, and physical and mental conditioning. The whole speech is just a show for the vids, for the people back home - a bit of good old fashioned grandstanding. But this is why you're here. To fight. To stop them.

"And then we tried what they did. We tried fighting. Skermishing." The First chuckles slightly. His laugh echoes in the chamber. Fifty thousand of the Enlisted are gathered to listen, but you could hear a pin drop. "That just provoked them to even greater pace.

"Our civilization has been at peace for two thousand years," the First continues. "But we will learn to fight again. This is the beginning of our offensive. If we do not win, the invaders will take everything. In this, you fight for your families, your fellow citizens, and the very survival of our civilization. You fight against chaos itself. You are the defenders of - "

"When are you leaving?"

"Tomorrow."

El'lora stands before you. You're both in cyberspace, standing in a virtual projection of the fields outside your district in that arcology you left 11 years ago. She's grown into a beautiful young woman. She has a boyfriend, now, a respectable man. He's an architect, student of the 23rd century neo-gothic style.

"I guess..." She rubs the back of her neck. "Mom and dad..."

"...I spoke with them a few days ago. They've sort of gotten over things, a little bit."

"They're scared." She looks at you. Her eyes are shimmering. "I am too. Those things out there...they're strong. They say we might have to move, soon. We're halfway across the galaxy, and they want to move us back to the home star, to one of those refugee arcologies. I have a net-friend from the Outer Rim that's in one of them. It's so crowded that she spends all her time in cyber, now. Just to get away."

"I told you I would win," you tell her. "And I will."

She hugs you. She's not really hugging you, but it feels like she is. "I love you, Erebus. Please be careful."

"I will be. I love you too."

---------
---------

Being jacked in isn't like being alive. It's more than being alive.

Seated at your console in the core of your cruiser, you become the living keystone of an artificially intelligent system. Society learned not to create a true A.I. the hard way, but computers of such power were inevitable. An organic brain, with real empathy and human judgement, could be utilized to form the crux of such a system.

And so they had plugs drilled into your skull and spinal cord so that you could essentially become the CPU of a cruiser. You are one of the Enlisted - one of the 49,867 remaining who volunteered, survived the physical augmentation process, and then made it through the training to relearn the ways of war and save everyone from destruction.

>con't
>>
>>31594773
That's exactly what he became, after 3 million years.

To call Erebus human at that point would be a hell of a stretch.
>>
>>31594768
Ah, so that's what they mean by "Venia is only the beginning"

>>31594773
I have to agree, but considering we've been at this for three million years, I guess we just eventually became that horrifying space abomination.
>>
50,000 ought to do it. 50,000 cruisers. An engine capable of warping through space at 0.3 light years per hour in full drive. Thousands of on-board fighters, native automated defense systems, materials atomization and spot manufacturing capability for self-repair and replenishment, hard mental-link to all onboard ship systems for instant control at the speed of thought augmented several dozen times over, and tight-band high encryption wireless links to all peripheral, detachable systems. Capable of survival and return to base with 99% of the ship reduced to space dust.

After all those years of peace, a thing built for war is still the best humanity can do. And in that realization, you know why you were always unsettled with life. It is because you are too human. Too in-tune with instincts that were no longer needed.

But being jacked isn't just linking to your systems - it's becoming the ship. You aren't just flesh and blood and guts. You're machinery. You can do ten things, fifty, a hundred things at once and itch for more things to do. You could fight a simulation battle and watch daytime vids at the same time. And the other half of yourself could be manufacturing ammunition inside your own hull.

You volunteered for this thinking it would be a sacrifice, but it was an upgrade. Going back to normal...it would probably be a letdown.

The clamps holding your new cruiser - holding you - release. You slowly apply the thrusters, and drift away from the military defense platform orbiting Earth. You're off. Off on your own. Your mission: destroy as much of the enemy as possible.

They're chaotic, but they're small. You're confident that you'll succeed.

---------
---------

"Hey, Erebus."

"El'lora."

You stand in cyberspace again, as you have so many times.

It has been 360 years.

>con't
>>
El'lora is an old woman, now. It's been odd, watching her age without you. Hearing about her children. Hearing about her husband's accomplishments. Hearing about how she's grown the family business, even in the overcrowded refugee spaces.

You don't have much of a relationship with her family. Her husband and yourself are on good terms, but you're not really friends. Her children are wonderful, of course. But you're distant. An existence of cyberspace only, on the rare ocassion you have the time.

It is tradition that humans generally commit themselves to recycling after around 400 years of age. It's just the time when most people had enough of life. Eventually, it became an unspoken rule. Out with the old, in with the new. Make room for the new generation.

This will be the last time El'lora will be calling.

You hold her, and you cry. Oddly, she doesn't cry at all. She just pats you on the back, and wishes you well.

And then she is gone.

---------
---------

>...will that happen to Abby?

---------
---------

You've got one of the fucking buggers caught, alive. You're the first one to do it.

You trap it in one of your storage bays. A hundred arms custom designed for manipulation descend from the ceiling, along with a thousand sensors capable of detecting so much as an quark's shift in the enclosed 3-D space.

You peel back the carapace. It's...mechanical. Blended. Part machine, part...creature. Almost...like you.

That's a disturbing thought.

As far as its looks go, bug is the closest word, but it doesn't have organization like life you're used to. No centralized brain - nueral tissue is collected in spheres here and there, connected by thick, bone-sized bundles. That's the most regular part of it. The rest is a frankensteinian collection of organs and vessels.

The nerves are quantum linked to something else.

Something. Is it a method of communication? Perhaps they really are psychic, then?

It takes a day of study and manufacture. You extend your own uplink and merge it with the still-living creature's nerves. You made sure to keep it alive. Just in case it feels pain. A little revenge for El'lora's daughter, who was caught in one of their attacks.

Holy shit.

But in that flash of awareness you learned what you need to know. They have a source.

But...'they' is a misnomer. These monsters, these things...they're limbs. Fingers. It's all one whole. One creature.

---------
---------

How long have you fought Chaos? You don't know. The cruisers spits the answer into your brain before your neurons finish rendering the question. 22,456 years, 4 months, 8 days. And then the hours, and minutes, and seconds, and -

You delete the output. You don't want to see the milliseconds ticking by.

When did that nickname start to stick? Probably when they started eating entire worlds and shitting them out the other end. That was probably when.

The home galaxy is half theirs, and three-quarters of the local cluster with it. The human civilization ramped up expansion in a bid to out-grow them. But they grew with you.

More technology was integrated into your cruiser as all that time past. You became bigger. Faster. Stronger. More capable. You began researching your own technology. You upgraded yourself faster than your own scientists could. You did it while you fought.

You had to. They changed that quickly. The enemy was always changing. You had to be like them to beat them.

You sit here, still in your flesh suit...that old thing you were born into. Most of you isn't flesh anymore. You're integrated into your own cruiser, now the size of a small moon. You're part battlestation, part heavy-weapons factory, part robotic colony. You fight Chaos.

But what's left of home? You haven't seen anyone else in three decades, and that was just a passing ally. Is there any home left? Or are you alone, just surviving, a tiny moving island always -

Alarms. A swarm. Time to fight.

Again.

---------

You recieve a transmission. It's only been another 5,000 years or so, but you've got contact with someone. Something.

You're pushing them back. You're winning. There's only 126 cruisers left, but you're winning. You suppose you're not the only one to pick up the slack.

More importantly, the men back home have found a way to end the war for good. They discovered some sort of energy - the same sort Chaos uses - buried in the fabric of reality. Whoever's doing the research named it Order. That fits rather nicely with the media narrative, with the popular nicknames. Order versus Chaos. Good versus evil.

You could care less about that shit. More importantly, the creature is itself a being of this other energy, touching this universe through one main connection. A weakpoint.

You adjust your physical parameters to produce 'Order' as the specs come in on tight-band signal. Your internal factory begins to realign. You're idling in darkspace, but the new specs will need a lot of matierals, so you plot course for a nearby star system. Analysis of light refraction patterns tell you it has a sizable asteroid belt. That should do the trick.

You're the closest cruiser to the core of Chaos.. You're the man for the job.

Man.

You're not really a man anymore.

Your factory drones attack the asteroid belt in a swarm, devouring rock and metal, converting it into the foundation for the device that will link you into this so-called universal energy grid.

You bring up a picture.

You, and El'Lora. Your family went to a tree-park to rake leaves, one of those ancient cleansing rituals become pastime. You're standing near the pile, and El'Lora is in its center. She's tossed a few handfuls into the air. Brown and red leaves rain down around her like snowflakes. A little wood sign nearby reads: 'Please spread piles back out after you have finished raking. Thanks! - Park Management'.

She's dead, isn't she?

...what are you fighting for?

Took you another 1,000 years to make it back. You had to fight all the way. But you're back. And they're dwindling, even when you're not fighting them. They're dying on the vine, roots pulled out. The swarms are collapsing. Their connection into this word is stunted, contained.

You're a hero.

It was strange, disconnecting from your cruiser, just back in your fleshbag. Still augmented, to be sure. You're practically a machine wearing skin. But so limited. So...singular.

The people cheering around you seem distant. Small. They make noise...but you can hardly hear them. They don't know. They didn't fight. They didn't have to change.

You changed. Out there, you became something different. You meet the eyes of the other cruisers, the other Enlisted - the other 34 that made it back alive. 34 out of 50,000. They know. And they know that you know. You can see it in their eyes.

The same laws that prevent true A.I. restrict human augmentation beyond the legal limits. The cruiser program was an exception. You're different from all the normal people around you. And you'll never be like them again.

---------
---------

You sit in a room, alone, thinking. They still need you. The fight goes on. Chaos spreads exponentially. You've reduced it in huge measure, but it can't be killed. Not completely.

It's funny. The barrier was just the start. Order-energy integrated into most technology over the 1,000 years it took you to make it back home. It is essentially power from nothing, a fundamental way to combat entropy, a sneak peek beyond the boundaries of the universe. It's the future. It's the force that will power the world as the suns slowly burn out and the black holes vaporize into heat.

>con't
>>
You came back to get the final weapon they'd been building and remove chaos from this universe once and for all.

But there's a problem. A big problem.

In becoming dependent on Order to function, society became reliant on the existence of Chaos. Order is predicated on Chaos. Something fundamental would die if they killed it all off for good; it would cut off their channel, snap the link that enables them to access it. So they've got to keep their enemy in chains, buried at the bottom of the deepest, darkest pit, where it'll never come back.

And that's where you come in. Where the cruiser program ends, the Guardian program begins.

---------
---------

"Son." The new leader of the new government slaps your shoulder. He pats you as if he's some sort of comrade. As if he was out there, playing chess with Chaos for ten thousand years. As if he could know the feeling you had when you passed a brother in space, another cruiser, just as scarred and torn and as separated from reality as you.

"You're a hero. I'm not going to ask you to participate...but I know you want to keep fighting. At least, that's what they told me."

"...I'll participate," you say. The sound-words from your mouth are awkward. You haven't spoken aloud in a long time. Didn't need to. It feels slow. Inefficient. "What do I have to do?"

This part at least seems a bit weak, but the rest is fine.

"Well, you know we can't get rid of them altogether," the First says. "We're going to bottle them up at a single key point - as far from us as possible. But every machine breaks down. Say you can build something to last a million years. What happens on a million and one? What happens in a billion? We need men out there to keep an eye on things. We can't trust the computers. We need thinking, breathing men. But...it's a terrible task to put on anyone."

"I'll do it."

The First seems surprised. "...well, good. Excellent. Point being, we'll have a rotation. No one needs to be there forever."

"I'll go alone," you say. "I don't want anyone else bothering me."

"...are you sure? It involves heavy biological modification. Heavier, if you'll be there longer. I don't know what they're doing, but you'll be able to resolve Order from yourself spontaneously."

"Sure."

"...we'll give you the best cruiser."

"I'll just take Vigil."

Vigil. Your cruiser.

No. You. You are Vigil.

"Son...you were out there a long time. Are you absolutely sure about this?"

"I've never been more sure of anything in my entire life, sir."

You visit your arcology.

It was destroyed in the war, about 500 years after you left. It was rebuilt as a monument to your actions. A sort of big park. Come see where the hero or humanity grew up!

There's resources and technology enough to guarantee everyone immortality. But humans have a thing about tradition. Even today, aside from a few exccentrics, people call it quits after a few centuries. Let society breathe the fresh air of a new generation. After a while...people tire of life. Tire of living.

You're tired of living.

The graveyard of the commercial district is a quiet place. There are lots of visitors around, but people stay away from the graveyard. It's not that surprising. Not many people like graveyards.

There was one other Enlisted from your arcology. You didn't really like him - never got along in back in basic. He was kind of an asshole.

He died two hundred years after launch. You found him floating in space, a dead hulk, his command module pinpointed and vaporized by Chaos. It was obvious that he didn't randomly cycle the module's position through his hull. Chaos learned too fast for mistakes like that.

You leave a shard of his cruiser's carapace on his gravestone. It's the only honor you can think to give him.

Your family's plot grew significantly. Your exploits made them famous. When you got back, you had dozens of messages from your descendents of the now, seeking to get back in touch with you. You ignored them.

You place flowers on El'Lora's grave.

She was the only one that understood. Even when she was a child. The only one that didn't quesiton.

You'll never hug her again.

You miss her.

They changed you. You don't feel all that different, but your new body is better. The fleshbag was stale and rotting. This Order being that you've become...is good.

The seal is a bland thing. Dark. Swirling. Chaos writhes within, but the technology of the greatest minds that ever lived, including yours, keeps it locked tight.

You watch your eternal foe and you think. You think on the battles you fought, the wars you won...the wars you lost, and barely escaped. Whole sectors of space changing hands. A dance that played for what feels like forever. And here it is, reduced to a little ball tucked into the farthest and most remote corner of reality they could find, orbiting a modest yellow star. The only other thing in the system is a humble asteroid belt.

Victory is bittersweet.

A thousand years pass.

You've got a tight-band connection to the net, full cyberspace access, but you only rarely use it. You have seen the height of the most desperate struggle for survival. In all the rest of human history, and in all the media they have ever produced, nothing can compare. Not even the movies they made about you. Special effects can't capture the visceral feeling of tearing the enemy apart with bursts of ordinance and drone fighters.

>con't

A particular message grabs you, one day. One of the other surviving cruisers. All the 32 others have ended their lives, but for him. He wrote you to say goodbye, because he's tired of living in utopia.

You briefly consider killing yourself.

You have a job to do.

Ten thousand years pass.

You drift in and out.

A hundred thousand years pass.

You watch. Vigilant.

Endlessly vigilant.

A million years pass.

Your society as you know it is gone. They no longer depend upon maintaining this reality. You are invited to join the ascension, but you ignore them, ignore their messages, ignore their progress. You never wanted utopia. You never wanted much of anything. The only satisfaction you found was in defeating your enemy, and now that, too, is gone.

Humanity is overrated.

What does it matter?

You sleep.

Soundlessly.

So?

In the end, Chaos was all we had left.
>>
You wake.

Everything has gone to fucking hell.

Chaos is leaking from the seal. It forms a thin layer over the core wall, growing on top like some kind of flat, rotting fungus, a twisted plant of Chaos that uses Order to set down its roots. Matter as water and earth flows around it, a fake micocosm of a real planet.

How long has it been?

The readout flashes.

2 million, 345 thousand, 456 years. 5 months. 22 days. And so forth, down to the individual units of Planck time.

What the fuck? Was there a bug in there they didn't tell you about?

You ready all sensors.

Chaos thrums from this new world. It seems most concentrated in several points. 7, to be precise. All mobile.

You prepare to scour the seal clean - but the systems ward you off. Too much power could damage things further. It's got to be scrubbed by hand and stitched back together.

You'll have to detatch from the systems and put your new form to use on the ground. But the Chaos is powerful...very powerful. You'll be vulnerable if they turn on you at once.

This will require strategy.

You feel a bit of fear. But you feel a greater sense of anticipation.

You can hardly believe this is happening. Chaos has learned how to build upon its very antithesis. It is conspiring to free itself. It is no longer content to sit prisoner.

You feel alive. Chaos is back, and it wants a fight.

Maybe you wanted to let it have one.

Maybe you were tired of watching.

---------
---------
>>
---------
---------

The mobile units of chaos are not friendly, but rather...cordial, at best. They have their fiefdoms. They rule over the little chaos-people, men, they call themselves. Reminiscent of your own kind, in ways, but given life by the chaos power, made stable by the greater shell of Order. Were you the more curious type, you might want to study the strange blend of energies they represent.

Chaos always copies, warps, mutates, improves. You wonder if it's attempting to copy mankind. Perhaps it seeks to rework itself in the image of those that proved superior.

It's an amusing idea. But it explains why they're so human...

But no matter. Ultimately, they're just fakes, parasites living off the energy in the larger growth. Not of much concern. They'd just die off once Chaos got loose, besides.

There's another interesting thing that's caught your attention. A land mass like your own, separated from the main body of 'Venia', two islands called Veldinsk and Avankt. The distance has created a strange situation; the beings that live there are more Orderly, with just a hint of chaos. They don't have the chaos-dynamo 'souls' of the parasite people.

One in particular has been ostracized by them. The Chaotic radiation mutates their newborns on occasion. These are raised as normal, until it is realized by society what they are, and then they are shunned, left to starve in the street.

The cruel practice is convenient for your purposes. The individual you consider has been shunned. It is something no one would miss from Veldinsk, but something that could go unnoticed in Venia. Perhaps this is the agent by which you can insert yourself?

But the people themselves could be useful. Given technology, and a goal, they could be put to good use. You can't be everywhere at once. A plan takes shape in your mind. They'll make an excellent containment force.

---------
---------

>con't
>>
The thing wants a name. You've given it power and purpose; you've given it new life. All it needs is a mission. That's all you need.

But no, not satisfied until it has a name. You pick a name from the parasites at random. David. Your thinking, breathing suicide-bomb relishes the mote of attention you grant. Of course, if not for you, it would already be dead. It amuses you to think that it considers you a god. You don't bother to correct its misunderstanding.

You send it in with a single goal: drive wedges between the seven points of Chaos. Cause as much...chaos...as possible.

Ironic.

The Wind-folk have developed a sort of engine that enables them to levitate great amounts of mass in their atmosphere. David is confident that by stealing and selling this technology to the earth-faction, whom the Wind detests, he can spark violent conflict between them. This would inevitably bring their allies into the fray by the domino effect of pre-arranged defensive pacts.

You encourage him in this endeavor.

---------
---------

David reports again. Others like him - chaos-souled, but able to manipulate Order directly, like you can - are not uncommon. You tell him to organize them and pose as an eigth faction. The seven units of chaos can't tell the difference.

You descend personally and set your fortress on an island in the southern sea, close to where the Light-creature - the most Chaotic, in terms of energy - is situated. You tell David to rile up the winged followers of the light as much as possible. He does a wonderful job. Perhaps naming him wasn't such a bother after all.

Soon enough, Hyperion comes to battle you. You hold back intentionally, letting him drive you out. This gives you excuse to side publically with the other three 'elementals', neatly splitting them down the middle.

Now that they're in an all-out war against each other, it should be a simple matter to eliminate them. A bit more Chaos this way, but the seal will hold a while yet.

>con't
>>
Erebus was... kind of a dick.
>>
---------
---------

The lesser elementals have been dealt with, tricked into sealing themselves. Geb's defeat after you left him to his fate became the catalyst of the final stage of your plans. Hecate and Leviathan have put their faith in your strength.

The Greaters believe they have the upper hand - they think that, with their might combined, they can destroy you.

They're wrong.

But then, they don't know anything, do they? None of them do. With every spell, the heart of chaos pulses stronger. With every battle, the core pushes harder against the weakened barrier. With every demon summoned, every new human born, every new advancement of magical technology based on the energy floating around them, chaos grows. Venia itself is a shifting, changing lifeform, created by freely available mana twisting the order around itself into a sort of stable form. The earth and oceans are merely a shell of order for chaos that is growing. Replicating itself.

None of them ask from where all this energy comes. None of them question the natural state of their world. They do not know the mutated and unstable foundation upon which they stand. They are wisps of smoke ignoring the fire that gives them life.

Left unchecked, that fire will burn until it turns the universe to ash. It cannot be contained while the barrier is damaged. Half-measures are unacceptable.

All the elemental lords must die. It is as simple as that.

And then there will be no one to stop you when you scrape the barrier clean of this ugly growth. And then you'll repair it. And then you'll return to your quiet vigil.

It's inevitable, now.

Can you blame him? After he lost everything? All of this was his job.
>>
>>31594965

>>
Your overconfidence has led to disaster.

You gave David a shard with which to fight - and he broke it, attempting to redeem you before Hyperion. The fool became so caught up in his zealotry that he started to believe it. You throw him past the broken outer layer of the seal, into the 'nether' the parasites all fear. He'll rot there until he dissolves completely.

The annihilation plan relied on all the shards acting together. With one shattered...you'll need to compensate. But the Elementals are already closing in on your position. You'd timed it all perfectly, and now that's working against you.

Vigil reports a contingency measure. Thick lines of Chaos rib the underside of the Venia growth, where radiation is concentrated - the mages call them ley lines. Calculations indicate that these can be corrupted by Order. Once the shards split, the corrupted channels will tunnel the pieces to natural low-points of Chaos. This corruption will simultaneously patch the seal and deliver the pieces of your self to safe locations, whereafter they can recombine.

A radical plan with too many variables - but you can see Hyperion's Light growing in the distance. You communicate your approval to the system; your constructs set to work immediately.

The patch should hold while the shards regenerate. They'll need a program to direct their activities. You set to work. The system aids you, writing code as fast as you can think it.

Augmented, that is quite fast.

And...you are finished. It is a rough and convoluted plan...but there is no one to understand and counter it. Even if it takes you a bit longer than you thought, all is in position. Victory is assured.

You feel...disappointment.

Hundreds of thousands of years of war...and it only took fifty or so to end this particular battle. Chaos would be ashamed. Its chosen champions are pathetic.

Hyperion and his three allies roar over the horizon. "Erebus!" The Lord of Light's voice booms through the air. "We've come for you!" In a moment, they're in range. And the arrogant fool can't help himself but enjoy a monologue. "Your justice is arbitary. Might does not make right. Today, we vanquish that madness!"

The elementals land before you. Aeolus, a dragon with wings of wind and scales like emeralds. Logi, a bird of flaming feathers. Raijin, a walking stormcloud that crackles with energy. And Hyperion himself, taken a winged, humanoid form, glowing as solid gold light. Behind them comes an army of their followers. You can hardly believe they brought parasites as backup. It's like watching ants cheer as they crowd underneath a rapidly descending boot.

<Justice?> you ask. <What does that have to do with anything?>

Hyperion levels a spear of light in your direction. "Your own followers profess your Justice as they taint rivers with the blood of the innocent, and you ask what I mean?!"

David did go a little overboard with the propaganda, didn't he? <There is no Justice with me,> you say. <There are only two things that matter. The first is the difference between what individuals wish to achieve, and what is. The second is the power they possess to make those visions a reality. All else are rationalizations layered upon the subjective.>

"Your words are clever, but they will not let you slide away. I hold you accountable, Erebus!"

<Your self-righteous pratter grows duller upon each retelling.>

The tip of Hyperion's spear flares with a light like the sun in the blue sky. "And your freakish lack of morality disturbs to no end. Ready yourself. Today, we end this war once and for all."

<You have already lost.>

You activate the annihilation.

So, Erebus started guarding because humanity came to rely on the energy of Order, and by destroying Chaos, Order would cease to exist. However, since humanity has ascended to a higher plain of existence, there is no point to guarding Chaos anymore.

So we have a few choices here

He's is not insane.

He is simply single minded.

He has a simple goal. contain chaos.

That's what he does! That's ALL he does! You can't stop him!
>>
>>31595151
We fix the seal, there won't BE anymore life on Venia. The only reason all those people came to be was because of the leaking chaos.

Later peeps.
>>
>>31595136
Honestly, at this point, we know enough of the tree to guess as where stuff will be - and there is no room for there to be anything on the tree like the inner darkness of the left side.

In general, we just need to get as much power as we possibly can now.

If you had told me however many threads ago that Shadow would actually turn out to be a war machine-fragment of a three-million-year-old post-human siscon from space, I actually probably would've believed you. But it would've been close.

Have a good holiday, SM.
>>
>>31595195
I realy like Erebus' character. It's "human" to react like him.
>>
>>31595211
Well Erebus isn't a siscon , Shadow is.
Atleast if you can accept that people like their family for nonsexual reasons.
>>
>>31595161
>>31595190
The course is clear. Shadow remains as is. Venia and it's source of chaos, the crack, is carefully controlled so the status quo remains the same forever, fluctuating as little as possible.
>>
>>31595161

I can't believe that playing god on Venia seems to be the best option right now. Anything else seems far worse as far morally or ethically.
>>
Alright guys, what if we could tie the LUEG and UUEG together somehow, and try to reignite the universe?
>>
>>31595254
Could be fun, maybe when Abby starts to get bored?

If Erebus the shadow elemental was a human, then what the hell are the natural shadow elementals?

This is probably the plan I like best, even if it does feel like it could easily set off a mutual annihilation event.

Just seal all the holes, vent the Order plane and the Chaos plane into each other and let the primal forces duke it out and leave the meatfolks out of it.

That is, unless the Natural Humans chose the LUEG as the destination for their apotheosis, which might raise some lingering doubts.

And if it WAS their destination...

>>31595269
This could mean they're Natural Humans who accidentally slipped out of their apotheosis through the link to the LUEG, stuck in forms that are unable to speak, and hunted down as aberrations by the new Chaos on Venia in a horrible inversion of the original Chaos War.

Just due some patchwork up on the seal and whatever Balance plans we come up with, open up Vigil for the humans of Venia to study, pass on our knowledge, stay around to help for a couple hundred years and then finally die and move the fuck on.

Let everything die anyway?

/tg/ shits itself at the merest hint of real difficulty or adversity, or obstacles to rampant waifuism.

/tg/ thinks that the answer is RAINBOWS.

>>31595662
It's an inevitability for the plot to progress. There are no other alternatives.
>>
I think the scope of the story just got too big with this.

I came here for the well-written characters and crazy adventures.

All this forces of reality and fate of the universe is just making all the rest of the story and characters seem completely trivial and irrelevant.

People are seriously debating back and forth over to just end it all or do some bull shit.

The quest has literally devolved into whether we should just keep the switch on or flick it off.

>>31595652
I was actually just aobut to say we should Artifcat Steward and give him all of this cool tech and have him guard Chaos for the rest of Eternity.

No one is trying to maintain the status quo, though.

You ever stop to think that the reason things are getting worse is because everyone's just letting it?

Because the dog is dying anyway.

Either you do it. Or you let the dog die a little later by exploding the universe and turning it into nothing but a hideously mutated dog zombie.

Well then, we make Venia bigger, spread it out more, until it completely encases the core, thus dispersing the Chaos to a more manageable rate.

And then, should it become completely corrupted, we make a new land atop that, and pretty much continue on like this until the stars wither.
>>
I just had an idea.

This whole time we've been playing by erebus' s rules, but the situation was never in his control. He's been dealing with chaos this whole time and even backed it up into a corner, but he's never seen the full extent of what "chaos" is.

"Order" and "Chaos" are foreign "energies" non-native to this universe.

Or so he and the original humans believe. Why did they suddenly pop up out of nowhere? If venia contains the core of chaos, where is the core of order- I know for a fact it isn't us, we are merely a byproduct with the highest saturation. Maybe if we root around in the nether or our artifact gate we could possibly find the actual source of these energies. Hell, maybe there are more than just two of these fundamental powers- everything we know about them is flatlandesque at best. I just don't think we have all the information we need yet.
>>
>>31595939
Everyone is dying.

You're dying right now, and so am I.
>>
>>31595939
If it's dying anyway why do we have to kill it?

More importantly why do we have to stop it?

On that note, if the universe is dying anyway why do we have to bother stopping.

By your own analogy we should just destroy the universe, not follow along with Erebus's plans.
>>
>>31595939
You are terrible at analogies.

And it wouldn't be mutated. and there's a way to have a happy medium.

>OOC
always with the tunnel vision.

This is a huge shock to the system.

Realizing the fact that Venia's existence is doomed and unsustainable is not OOC, when now he's seen first hand the consequences of uncontained Chaos. The horror of it.

And he's been introduced to mortality. The idea of inevitable death. That even if he tries to preserve life he can't do it forever.

This is a life changing upending moment. You can be forced to reconsider what's possible and what's not, at a time like this.
>>
>>31595962
That is true, we don't really know shit about what Order actually is. And Erebus is a soldier, not a scientist or a scholar. He only bothered to learn what was directly necessary for his goals.

God, past us was as dumb as he was cruel.
>>
>>31595962
There is not "core of chaos"

this "core" is just what is left. its location doesn't matter.
>>
>>31595999
Chaos is only horrible because it was a threat to humanity.

There is no humanity left for it to threaten.

And the universe itself is similarly doomed.
>>
>>31595999
Shadow has always known that things inevitably die.

It's not nearly the shock you're making it out to be.
>>
>>31595999
>Venia's existence is doomed and unsustainable
But is isn't
>>
>>31595977
The universe isn't dying, actually. Entropy itself was defeated with Order.

>>31595985
That was referring to the inevitable escape of Chaos from the seal. Exactly like the Chaos War. Hideous mutated monstrosity.
>>
>>31595999
You're one to talk about tunnel vision when you've been off on the same banter for thirty or so posts without change or advancement.
Frankly, you're operating on incomplete information and you lack the dynamicism to deal with this personally.
Later, Mr. Anderson.

What information is missing again
>>
>>31595999
We are literally the only thing in existence that isn't Chaos.

Everything else is an evolved form of Chaos that found a way to merge with Order.

Erebus is just an artifact of a long dead era and Chaos doesn't threaten anything but him.

Chaos also threatens those "humans" chaos threatens everything.
Chaos is the death of the universe.
>>
>>31596067
No, all matter in the universe is also threatened by Chaos.

I'm pretty sure there's still nonhuman life out there on Earth, at the very least.
>>
>>31596128
No it isn't

Chaos would allow the universe to live beyond it's heat death.

Order wouldn't
>>
>>31596128
And the universe is empty and devoid of all life except for those "humans" and the other Chaos entities.

Why stop the death of an empty shell?
>>
So life on venia existed before the elemental lords and magic, at least according to Venia history.

Just restore the barrier strength to the point where that was possible. No magic, no lords... Not a very happy ending for mages though.
>>
>>31596142
But Order already DOES do that.

it defies entropy. weren't you paying attention?
>>
>>31596151

>And he's been introduced to mortality. The idea of inevitable death. That even if he tries to preserve life he can't do it forever.
He's actually been introduced to the OPPOSITE of that in the form of the knowledge that 'natural humanity' was able to shed mortal forms and become some weird sort of transcendental energy beings.

Whether or not that's an acceptable fate is up for debate.

>>31596067
If Chaos is sealed in Venia (a.k.a. there is no incursion point for the UUEG aside from the rift sealed beneath Venia), presumably the further you travel from Venia, the less corruption there is, up until the point at which it should become negligible.

Order is not a natural thing either; which means if Chaos is sealed permanently, Order will also recede, which leaves only unnaturally-created 'natural' humans behind.

Remove the pressure from the hose forcing Chaos to compound itself, and the remaining Chaos should peter out over generations.

That is, if sealing Chaos/Order outright wouldn't kill all partially-chaotic/orderly 'life' outright. Which is a thing we really don't have any way of knowing.

Mostly it just comes down to us not having enough salient information yet to try and figure out an alternate plan besides what thousands of years of war taught to the original Humans.

>>31595962
>everything we know about them is flatlandesque at best.
Erebus, at the very least, is definitely a total square.

hue
>>
>>31596162
I thought about suggesting that, but eventually it seethes from the core anyways as far as we know. And people with magic can cause damage to the core. We'd have to be some sort of eternal gardener to deal with it if we make it like that. Granted that's what would happen anyways, if it needs actual maintenance.

>Normal A.I.s were, they didn't have magic.

>>
>>31596273
you know giving a true AI chaos-magic pobably doesn't make the problem with being chaotic better.
>>
>>31596286
Steward isn't crazy and homicidal like their A.I.s probably were.

Their A.I.s probably attacked them and tried to kill all humans.
>>
>>31596241
Well you can't really expect us to sacrifice Venia for a civilization that no longer relies on what we're doing, can you?

You also can't really expect us to let it reign free and destroy everything in its chaotic waves, obviously.

So other ideas will be considered with greater weight and superiority because the aforementioned possibilities are just batshit unsatisfying First Year Game Design level endings, eheheheh.

The first is still preferable to the second.

The third is rather likely to end up the same as the second. All knowledgeable sources indicate it's inevitable, in fact.
>>
While I get that /tg/ really wants to obliterate Venia because they think it's the only way, that's really not in evidence.

Preserving Venia is possible. In fact containing the Chaos that's leaking out is a vital part of preserving Venia, because if Chaos actually does completely break out, the little Order/Chaos shell that has grown on it (which is Venia) will be destroyed in the process, and all the little chaos people walking around on it will die.

Venia exists because there is a little leakage, so what we need to do is patch things up enough that there is only a little leaking. That will preserve Venia, and it will give us a little garden to cultivate and amuse us in our old age.

And eventually we'll want to teach the people of Venia that, in order for their world to not be destroyed, they need to keep Chaos contained too. Because if Chaos does completely break out, they all die. I doubt the people of Venia really want that, so we can enlist at least some of them to help out in our gardening.
>>
>>31596332
There are no knowledgeable sources on this.

There has never before been something that combined Order and Chaos together.

This is quite literally uncharted territory where anything is possible.
>>
>>31596332
>>31596285
>>31596301
No, I don't trust him to maintain the Barrier alone.

Erebus was completely alone. I think that was ultimately what turned him into what he was: a broken shell of a human being, going through the motions of his duty.

>>31596350
Pretty much this
>>
>>31596375
But Steward isn't a human. and he won't be alone, he'll have human aid.

You know, I'm reminded of what Auriel said waaaaaay back. She and the other angels have lived for 700 years, and some of them just got sick of it. People really aren't equipped to deal with living that long.

Erebus passed his expiration date a long time ago. We're the new model, fresh and ready to live when he was just bored of it all. Out with the old, in with the new.

A bunch of people already said this upthread.
>>

A bunch of people also seem to want to blow up Venia and kill everyone on it because that's what Erebus wanted.

I think the fact that Erebus is a burned out shell of a man who lived way longer than is healthy bears repeating. We shouldn't just go with what he wants.

Did you guys miss the whole part about "Chaos adapts and it adapts fast"?

It made humans and a fantasy version of the world they came from after they beat it. Then Erebus comes back as a 'shadow elemental' and slaps their shit again. So what's Chaos do? It makes some shadow elementals that work off order just like the shadow mages do.

>>31595437
I don't think that's going to be the case. Erebus went on about how those on the battlefield need to change. How those that don't change die. "Scrubbing ourselves of our impurities" is walking the path of that chucklefuck that didn't constantly randomize the position of his cockpit. Remember what happened to him? Chaos adapted, figured out where his vulnerable meatsack was, and killed him.

We've been adapting to deal with this hell and we're not going to let Erebus "take care of our artefacts" just so that he can perpetuate the endless war of adaption. We fail to get better, and I can guarantee you that Chaos will not make the same mistake. I will be damned if we half-ass this job just so that Erebus can have his Infinite War.

Unfortunately, I have no fucking clue how to go about this short of smashing the LUEG and the UUEG together like purple and yellow Playdoh and mixing it up until everything is a gross shit-brown color.
