The meeting room aboard the Illiseus reminded Jack fiercely of those cramped lecture halls of the academy. Almost a hundred officers crammed into the room with their man servants, aid de camps, key staff, and whatever sycophants and hanger ons they brought to the briefing. Each had their medals pinned to the white and gold uniforms like a dick wavering contest to determine seating order and rank. From the colonels at the front to the freshly knighted like Jack, the stench of self importance was rank in the air. “Take your seats and the briefing will begin in ten minutes,” The brigadier's sergeant called out to the crowd. Jack rankled at the sight of the pudgy man who obviously hadn't visited the front lines in a decade despite the sheen of metal over his pudgy stomach.

“Hey man, take a seat over here,” A bespectacled blonde haired man called out to Jack. His uniform was a starched and pressed clean white and gold with the epaulets of a new knight. Beside him sat a plain looking woman with a brown bob cut and noble crest of the house Laurient. Her bored expression contrasted with the excitability of her glasses sporting friend who called out to Jack. “Here, before one of the big brass come take it.” The offer came as a surprise to Jack who had never seen them before.

Jack quickly took the spot and sat himself down comfortably. It was good spot to observe the room, with a comfortable chair and positioning. The thought he must have been here a while to grab it early before someone else's aid snatched it up dawn on Jack as the other knight started speaking to him. “Salutations brother. My name's Hugh Ulric, and this here is Elizabeth Laurient. Nice to meet you.”

“Hail,” Jack greeted his fellow knight genially. The man was kind enough to save a seat for him, so why not make friends? The regimental crest on his uniform showed he was in communications too, which made him potentially a very good ally on the climb to nobility. “I am sir Jack Ashleon,” He introduced himself to the two with the grace befitting his station. There was a bit of ego in Jack's motions and words that lent itself to an air of confidence and authority. A subtle shift in Hugh's position pointed towards a proper amount of intimidation and respect, while Elizabeth remained unbowed.

Hugh twisted his seat to face Jack head on, and looked curiously at the Jacck. “Oh really? That sounds familiar, are you from a noble house?”

Bowing in his seat was not uncomfortable, but it did look a bit awkward. “Of house Ashleon, of the royal capital streets,” Jack said as he rose theatrically. Elizabeth deigned a small amount of attention to the statement, but it didn't amount to much in the man's eyes. The Laurient house was a strong contender for the throne with several marriages into the royal family. Seeing her here as a common knight was a suprise, but did little to diminish her higher standing over Jack and Hugh.

“It's an honor sir. I'm afraid I'm just a lowly noble,” Hugh joked despite his aristocratic blood. It was an amusing sight, and humor obviously came swiftly to the communications officer. When he calmed down from his chuckle Hugh turned back to the front of the meeting hall where the colonel had arrived at last. “I wonder where we will be deploying first,” Hugh whispered softly when the lights began to dim.

The colonel was a demanding man of age and importance who expected much of his men and women. Years of campaigning on the battlefield and off had left him a humorless and dour man who demanded many things. Such was life in service to the Kulth corporation, the main business of the Empire abroad who serviced their military and economic goals away from the homeworld. Business and combat were the same thing, and all officers were expected to be as shrewd salesmen as well as tacticians. “Glory to the Empire!”

“HAIL THE EMPIRE!” All returned the national cry before the briefing began.

Small talk was nice, but war and trade were the matter of life itself. Ragnos, a pleasantly sweltering planet that mostly desert and too close to the native star for most people's liking was a colony operated by the small kingdom of Sutherland. The hearty natives mined ores deep in the earth under the sand and sold primarily to the Loki corporation. Rumor had it that a new source of Ignatius, a main fuel source for mankind had been found recently but was as of yet unclaimed or exploited. Economic warfare was expected to begin soon.

Around him Jack could tell Hugh and Elizabeth were taking keen notes, but up front where the brass sat the nobles were happy to let their aids do the work as they chatted like it was a clubhouse assembly. The arrogance was astounding to imbibe in front of their colonel, but that was life in the boys club Jack rued. It was hardly surprising he realized, but most spectacularly the colonel neither minded or stopped his explanation of the situation. The lecturers at the academy had told him such things might occur when they deigned to warn their favorite pupil of the problems of corporation life, but this was out of hand. Rage burned in Jack's heart at the insubordination and silently vowed to remain better than his 'betters'.

“-We shall need a spear head for the landing and possible attack on Ragnos,” The colonel continued with his speech. There was much honor to be gained in such an attack, but also a much higher chance of danger is the Loki corporation was ready for them when they dropped out of Z space. “Who shall boldly volunteer?

Jack grimaced and stuck his hand up, joined by Elizabeth and countless others. The straight face appearance on her boring countenance betrayed nothing other than a servility towards the colonel and corporation. The sound of countless others demanding their first blood of the war and other honors due to them created a cacophony of indignity and other foolishness that Jack found distinctly offensive. Why, he asked himself, must he serve along such tools and trollops? Surely most would get themselves killed in the first salvo, and hopefully the wine besotted officers in the front would be the first to go.

“I shall go,” Jack shouted clear and forcefully over the thunder noise. “I was first in the academy in swords, lance arms, and space combat.” In fact, the only thing he hadn't aced was etiquette and ballroom dancing due to a combination of arrogance and personal grace. Jack had still graduated with top marks, earning him knighthood and entrance into the Kulth Corporation. Let none say that their meritocracy did not weed out the weak.

Laughs from the front greeted the claim, thought the colonel nodded in agreement. “Lead the charge then boy, and we shall see who carries the day.” Once all had died down, the strategy was laid out for the coming orbital assault. In Jack's mass production Cutlass class Strider, he'd have no special advantage over anyone else other than his own skill and luck.

Jack left with little more than a good bye to Hugh and Elizabeth. With the colonels personal blessing to lead the charge, he knew he'd have to be at top form while every had their eyes on him in the morning. A trip to the hanger was in order to examine the Strider personally and ensure everything was going smoothly. For a newly minter knight like Jack, the hangers were another place of pecking order and establishing power. Each stall held a Strider, the massive mechas that knights like himself piloted, and were serviced at all times of the day. After decades of warfare, each stall had been degraded of efficiency and certain tools had long ago gone from their stock. The most important and powerful nobles naturally aggregated to the best stalls and reserved them for themslves, while those lower fought for scraps. Jack's own stall was a beat down auto garage in comparison to the mansions others had procured- such was the life of a common born knight.

Along with the Strider came a platoon of soldiers who answered to the Jack. Four rifle teams of ground pounding men-at-arms served him, as well as two Longbow tanks and a squad of mechanics. The stall housed their arms and vehicles as well, to create their base of command while aboard the Illiseus. The command team was another addition to the platoon who aided in handling the administrative and trade matters. “Welcome back sir,” Sergeant James Cornish greeted with a salute. The head mechanic and a man of countless campaigns. He had seen all sorts of mechs and many years of combat, the one blessing among Jack's crew of green recruits.

OP you might find that writing a quest from a second person perceptive will get more favorable results than a third person perspective.

It makes immersion easier since people think of the protagonist as "I", as a respond to you write "You...". By using "Jake" people think of the protagonist as "Him" or "Jake", in other words as someone else than themselves which makes interactions and consequences seen impersonal.

“Good to be back Sergeant. Status report. I'm to bear the colors in tomorrow's battle,” You told him proudly. The gruff man stroked the red beard on his chin carefully. His left hand had been long ago replaced by a cheap prosthetic by the corporation after a starship battle ended with im losing the original, and his bulky figure stretched the plus sized robes considerably. Despite being out of shape, he had lasted over twenties years in a younger man's job and gotten fat at it too.

“Well, aint thems the works sir. The Strider's in fresh state right from the clanking factories, and it looks top right. It'll take some time before we get improvin it, but it's ready for combat. It'll look good too with that fresh paint next to the colors so long as you don't go'in bleed on it.” There was no disrespect in his voice, only the familiarity with a system that lead to the loss of the life of too many young men and woman. No bitterness just a genial acceptance of something out of his hand.

“Quite,” You agreed matter of factly. “I'd hate to embarrass you all in such a manner.”

James nodded and looked back to the medium sized Strider. “I'd say ya should go in towards the rear if ya want to get out alive, but if yer gone and leading then do something distracting. Flashy, but got to have substance. Yer' going to be the biggest target out there.” An idea formed in your head at the words, but that would take time to plan. A nod replied affirmative to the idea, and you headed off.

I have been fine with third person but would prefer second. Still enjoying things so far though.

Few questions. Obviously a Strider is a mech (nice term too, I like it) but are the man-at-arms in Striders too, or do they have crappy last-gen mechs, or are they just foot solders? Same with the Longbows, are they actually tanks, or mechs with extra armor?

A character sheet would be neat, but I'm ok with you just describing the fluff and keeping the crunch behind the curtains. Whichever you are more comfortable with.

Think something like this picture. They're actual rifle men for holding ground and clearing buildings, while the tanks are literal tanks. Of course Striders outperform all of them as a multi-purpose, all terrain warmachine, but there are just somethings that a tank can do for cheaper of boots on the ground can do that a Strider can't.

The office is a cramped hole in the wall with a desk, some chairs and holoscreen that would be a slight against your honor if it wasn't the fact it was your first command. Tomorrow's sortie pressed hard on your mind while the possibility of death remained likely. Courage be damned, you had higher goals that death in a vacuum. Your hand flew to your keyboard and began to dial home, when you thought better of it. You retracted the finger that hovered above the enter key ominously and made yourself to think of less distracting matters. A call your them might have settled your mood, but would do nothing for your survival odds in the long run. You had a campaign to plan.

Files popped up on screen as you called up the squad under your command. They'd be stuck on the ship until land fall, but it would prepare you for the inevitable ground sortie. All four of your teams were lead by green sergeants who had trained one of Kulth's many military insitutions. They'd been identified for leadership and tactical ability, but as of yet unproved. First among them were Tobis Mansfield, a hulking man with side burnds and a burn that was so rich you could smell the testosterone seeping from him. He was a broad chested man who held his Lance cannon with the ease of three men, and he'd be the poster child for every recruitment flick in the Empire once he had a few battles under his belt. Ulysses Hammer was a the bastard son some minor noble who never acknowledged him, and the psych profile suggested a burning need to prove himself. He'd lead his team agreesively in the simulation training, but his teams also tended to draw the most casualties.
>>
>>31591230
Janet Wilcomb knew her duties well and had the best tracking abilities out of any of your team leads. The sergeant came from a line of colonists who hunted for a living, and she had more actual experience killing than anyone else in your platoon other than yourself. Her pretty face had drawn a number of suiters despite her skin color, but no one could besmirch her record on behalf her gender or race. The last was Zang Black, a young spacer from a line of men at arms that had served the corporation for generations. He'd been busted back to corporal half a dozen times for fighting, but was otherwise a model soldier according to his scores.

The Longbows were refurbished machines from a previous expedition, and their crews had been replaced when the last had burned up inside the deathtraps. The Longbow was an inferior model replaced by the Longshot class tank, but it's durability and redundant systems meant that could take a beating longer than the crew inside. They'd be greet for taking ground and holding the front line once they were deployable.

And last you had your Cutlass Class Strider. You stand from your seat and pluck the blinds open to peer at the new machine. It was the one of the standard production model for new Knights, complete with heavy machine gun and star shield. It was a medium sized Strider capable of orbital operations and low orbital flight with its jetpack, and its armor outclassed the previous Rapier class of models. The paint was still the matte gray of an unhoused Knight, but Emperor willing you'd be a noble soon you thought with a grin. Those Loki scrubs would have no idea what hit them once you entered the battlefield.

lory and honor the Emperor your ass, there is no reason for any god fearing citizen to ever by up before 4 in the morning other than confession and drinking. Sometimes both, you note, if it's been a particularly good night. The Illiseus was set to drop out of Z-Space in two hours, giving you just enough time to wake up, shower, and eat before the preparations for the battle. Sleep came with merciful sweetness, though your dreams taunted you of home all night. You woke with a sheen of sweat and thoughts of homesickness that you haven't felt since that first night of the academy.

The bath was cut short by the hot water being rapidly consumed by aides preparing the morning bath for their masters, and the thought of purchasing consumed you the entire way to a mess hall. In your early morning stupor you almost lost your lordly gait and stepped into a captain before you awoke to the hails of a strange voice you recognized. Oh, nothing more than Hugh and Elizabeth sitting together and telling for you to take a seat at their table.

The officer's mess was a grand affair as befitting one of such high station. The wonder of how many had to starve and labor in the work camps to afford this crossed your mind traitorously, but you whisk it away with ease. A conscience was easily squashed with practice.

“Good morning, lady Lauriette, Ulric,” You greet them both with a bow that's far too grand for this early in the morning, especially for your peers. Sometimes you tell yourself you just need to give into the megalomania and theatrics. The table spread before you is impressively arrayed with all manner of food, from game hen and bacon to steak and fine wine. Your father would have killed a man for a single meal in his life for something like this, yet the meal has become blase to you with its recurrence. A healthy meal of fruits and carbs to last your through the day finds itself on your plate with short order while Hugh laughs at your entrance.

“Sleep well?” The blonde asked once her calmed himself. The perpetual giggler is in a good mood as per the usual, given he would be safe aboard the ship. Beside him Elizabeth ate languidly. Is this her first battle, you ask yourself. The woman is calm and collected, a harsh contrast to the many knights who find themselves torn between rethinking their brash decision to volunteer to front, and those confident of their upcoming victory. In chess only two pieces move at the beginning: the pawn and the knight.

“Of course. I had a lovely evening chatting with my several admirers back home. I'm afraid all five of them beg me to carry a token of theirs to this morning's battle,” You reply easily. Truth be told, after reviewing files and making your plan, there was no time for any communication before bed.

“I'll make sure to connect your calls mid battle sir,” Hugh joked between bites off french toast.

Small talk held for a while, with Hugh and yourself taking shots and building a rapport while Elizabeth ate in her stony silence. Hers are the high walls that make all comraderie impossible, but service together unbreakable. Such is the professionalism of a family tied to the royal family. You bite back a frown, and refuse to comment your own opinions of house Laurient. “-and they say Loki's going to be using their Streichers today as a test deployment,” Hugh mentions, snapping you from your thoughts.

“What, I thought MI18 said that they weren't done with their research and development yet?” You ask with all the coolness you can feign. Elizabeth watched you carefully, and it was obvious she didn't truly believe it.

“Yeah, it's a prototype field. Once they caught word of the fuel, they figured we'd be coming head first for it according to the comms we intercepted last night after the briefing.” Hugh was utterly unaffected by the news and munched down cheerfully on his breakfast while you fought the feeling of a stone dropping in your stomach. A next Gen Strider already? The Streichers weren't supposed to be ready for a year. If the academy rumors were true, then the Loki had produced a platform capable of Strider portable Heavy Lances. Of course, it was just a prototype, so it's not like you wouldn't be able to exploit the design flaws right? Right.

“I'll make sure to capture one for you to examine,” You promise Hugh with a wink. A handerchief was thrown on your plate as Elizabeth stood with her hands wiped clean. Another glare is fought back while Elizabeth gives you an indecipherable look.

“Try not to die in your boldness,” She advises before walking off.

God damn, sometimes you can't win. Whatever, she's a fucking Laurient. You have bigger concerns, like food. You dig in with a gusto to the food and remember times when a full meal was rare. Now you dine like a god just because you can shoot straight. The injustice would be painful if you weren't meant to achieve nobility by the barrel of your gun. Hugh reclined in his seat opposite you and continued chatting it up with you. This was his first battle as well, but he was hopeful about it. “I mean, they're so desperate they're using incomplete mechs you know? I'm sure you'll make planetfall first and plant the colors yourself.”

It's hard to disagree, but you've got something else to do before that can even happen. Once the food is finished you excuse yourself and make your way to your office again. The mechanics are hard at work doing final diagnostics with Sergeant Cornish barking orders all the way, but everything is prepared as they're going to get at this point. You let out a sigh and let fear grip you in this quiet moment alone before making the call. You could die here. But you won't- you have a promise to keep.

The call wires through the ansible to back home, where a friendly face greets you. The bakery is in good care, and Melina's cheerful face greets you with all the love you could expect from your fiance. “Honey! Oh my god, I didn't think you'd call for another week! We're just closing down shop at the moment, but I can talk for a moment.” Her red hair shines in the evening light filtering through the grimy windows, and you can barely hide a smile. This was the reason for your fight, why you climbed for a title. You'll give her everything one day.

>Talk about home.
>Talk about nothing.

“How is everything? Bread selling alright?” You ask with a false sense of serenity. Right now, this is what you need. Peace. Love. Melina. The girl is radiant in her apron and uniform despite the flour and other stains and you fall back in love with her all over again like you were six years old again and first saw her.

The woman smiles coyly and asks, “You miss me already? I thought Sir Ashleon was afraid of nothing but being upstaged?”

“As if. You're just lucky I had some free time. If it wasn't for me promising your father, I wouldn't even be engaged to you.” You're lying through your teeth and you both know it. You only act so defensive when you're worried about something and she can tell. “Is my brother keeping out of trouble?”

Melina nods and tells you about the parade when the Second Prince returned to the capital. He'd secured a trade agreement with the Federation that had brought the Heirarchy to their knees in the Ceremite market. The Empire was slowly bleeding those zealots dry, she cheered. Your brother was doing good, and the new arm fit him well. He was making into a fine baker and could even take over the shop once you married Melina. “...Is something wrong?” The red head asked innocently. The concern was obvious in her eyes, and she was worried despite her belief in you.

If this keeps up the sprinkler system is going to go off in your office. “Something wrong?” You asked, eyebrow raised at the woman. “Do you know who you're talking to.” Melina forces back a laugh at the familiar routine, and does nothing to stop you. “This is me. This is Jack! This is the most electrifying man in all the Empire. The show stopper, the noble robber, no jobber, Sir Jack Ashleon, future Emperor of all of space! Who is it that you think you're dressing but the consul of cool, praetor of pizzaz, centurior of calamity, and knight of the Empire. I got this babe,” You tell her as she struggles to stand up right.

“You're the biggest dork in the Empire,” Melina tries to tell you in a semblance of choerence between laughs. The woman wipes a tear from her eye and gives you a heart felt look. “Be safe ok? I love you. Come back home, even if you lose your shield.”

“I'll come back with a thousand flags,” You promise her with all the tenderness you can muster. “I'll be back before you know it. Love you, bye.” The video screen blinks out of existance as an alarm tells you it's time to suit up. With a sigh, you stand and walk down to your Strider.

You have a feeling it's going to be a long day.

>To be continued next week. See you on the front lines!

Can we have the specs on our mech, weapons, and soldiers under our command?
>>
>>31593495
Great so far, but I have some questions on fluff.
How is the empire organized? As said before, I am getting a slight Holy Empire of Britannia vibe and I was wondering about how close that is to the mark.
How is the line of secession organised?
What are the general dimensions of the Strider? (on a scale of Nightmare frame/Double Edge to Big O/Eva, about how big is our badass mech?)
Do we have any air/orbital units under our command? If not, is it a matter of rank or are orbital/air units limited to mechs?
>>

Ya did good, buddy.

The mech is gundam sized, since that's where I took the picture and bit of theme for the game from. There are a few Strider sized weapons I've prepped for at this point.

>Heavy Rifle
Basic Strider Rifle, +7 to hit and 1 shot at a time.
>Heavy Machine Gun +5 to hit and 5 shots at a time.
>Cannon +5 ton hit and blast radius on hit.
>Lance +6 to hit and heavy damage to target
>Sword +10 to hit and hand to hand.

You have four rifle teams of five men at arms each. They all have basic assault rifles. Two teams have bazookas for anti air/buildings, while two have man portable lances for anti-Striders. Basically to hold ground and help you out. The Longbow tanks have cannons and can take a beating, and can go through more than the actual crew inside can in a straight up fight. Good for long deployment since so much is redundant in it.

he Empire of Galitica arose from the home world of all mankind, Nova Terra. There it was immense continental super power that had been out competed to space by the Heirarchy of God and Federation of Tharos, among other small nations that had hurried to the stars. Claims to colonies and other powers beyond the planet had been already been made by the time the Empire left their earthly cradle, and to claim what others had would have been to courted destructive war on Nova.

The Kulth Corporation was born as a space born megacorporation that would act on the Empire's behalf in space where others would be force to see it as a deniable asset and shield from military repercussions. As life expanded and more aliens species were encountered, trade and warfare took on a new edge. There was land to be gained beyond the home world, and glory earned in battle. One could earn a new life working for the Kulth corporation, and might even rise from the rags of the streets to the courts of the Emperor himself!

Line of secession follows the first prince/princess. While traditionally organized by birth, it has been known to happen where those who achieve great deeds for the Empire are moved up the line in response. The Empire is ruled by noble house, who act as senators and other royal appointments by the Emperor. Anyone can in theory become royal, if they earn it. No air or orbital units, you only have a platoon. You'll have to rank up and get more forces under your command. Military might isn't centralized in the corp, you get your platoon and get promoted, but there are alliances between different factions for air support and the like. You can fly for parts of time though.

Probably want it to be so that the pilot fits snugly into the abdomen area, the cockpit/pilot cavity taking up the bulk of the abdomen, possibly the pilot's limbs extending into those of the mech.
