Notes on Rolls and Voting:

When I request rolls, each set of three rolls counts for one action. For example, a two-step plan would take the first 6 linked rolls. A particularly bad failure can interrupt a string of actions.

When rolling 1d100, I will consider criticals within the first ten linked rolls. Only criticals that occur in the first three rolls will be counted as "supercrits". This is still the case even if you'd have plan long enough to require more than ten rolls.

When rolling 1d20, the rules are the same, but I only consider criticals for the first five rolls, rather than ten. Criticals in the first three are still "supercrits".

When a plot choice results in extensive debate, I'll try to weed out the most popular trains of thought, and then call a vote on them. When voting, please respond with only a link back to the post and the number corresponding to your opinion. Other votes are discounted, including those with dice rolls or extra spaces.

Finally, note that this is not a democracy; it is a benevolent dictatorship.

Recent Events Summary:

The battle is over; the day is won. Sir Donovan Flint is free of his parasite.

But your fight is not over.

The elf queen, Ellendra Kalladar, has arrived in Arland to establish new relations with the Ring City and other countries following Sandalphon's death, the interm leader being Raphael.

With the core of the world more unstable than ever, it lies upon you to fix things before the barrier can collapse. The final means to realizing your true might lies in the Void, on the island from the vision.

With that in mind, you asked Queen Kalladar several questions, and finally understood how she came to encounter you all that time ago - and how she gave you an opportunity to resist the forces of Erebus's original plan, and find your own way.

And now, you have set out into the Void.

Everyone leans left in their seats as the ship starts to rotate. Vidar unsnaps his belt and takes to the windows. One-by-one, everyone follows suit.

"This is it," the pirate says. "Venia. Our world. From the Void."

And it comes into view. Everyone stares.

The first thing that grabs you is the barrier. You do not have a word in your vocabulary to describe how truly massive it is. It's so big, so encompassing, that even by leaning all the way close to the window, you cannot see its bottom. But from the top third or so you can see, it's definitely spherical. The barrier is black, but glows with a purple ambient light.

And then, Venia.

It is a solid plate of mass - curved, slightly, but not quite as curved as the barrier. It is -floating- on top of the barrier itself, suspended, as if it itself is an island. That explains the gap you flew through after going all the way to the barrier yourself.

The oceans simply drop off the world - but you can see the mists being sucked back under the landmass. Around the entire shelf of land is a mighty dome of Wind, a never-ending storm, obscuring the details of the continent resting in the ocean. The skysever.

As you rapidly gain distance, you can see the plate of Venia moving. It's rotating around the barrier, as if on a track.

"By the eight elements," Hemmelus says. He claps his hands together. "I...the water cycle. I have visual confirmation that the Water Cycle theory is correct! The world is flat! Ha! This'll show those damn Imperial round-worlders!"

>con't
>>
"Is the world rotating?" Abigail asks. "It looks like it's moving around the barrier."

"No, not quite," Hemmelus says. "Look at that. You can see injury on the surface of the barrier."

You glance down - and he's right. You can see the tip of the crack in the barrier. The white-gold glow forms a break in the purple light. On occasion, you see it pulse with energy. The white flash blinks at you like a lighthouse.

"The patch is rotating along with the landmass," Hemmelus says. "Therefore, Venia is in a fixed position - and the entire barrier is rotating. This lends credence to the idea, then, that the barrier is indeed analagous to a massive dynamo shell containing the Core of Chaos."

"What's the water cycle?" Ila asks.

"Great pockets of Ice, holding large amounts of water mana, sit at the bottom of the ocean," Hemmelus says. "It was suspected that water leaving Venia was recaptured by these pockets, which then released it back into the ocean - a process that contributed to world currents and climate. Seems it looks to be true."

"...it's beautiful," Blackwater says.

"Yeah," you say. "It kinda is."

Abigail is at your side, then. She takes your arm, and pushes into your side. You wrap her close, and together, you watch the world you're desperately trying to save slowly shrink in the distance.

You can feel the Island, now, as if something was lifted off your senses.

It's waiting for you.

A few hours have passed since you left the edge of Venia. They've passed in the still silence of the Void.

Everyone's relaxed a bit now that it's a proven fact the Nemesis isn't about to fall apart. Venia itself is dwindling in the distance, though the light of the hazy purple globe upon which it sits will probably follow you for some time.

After getting away from the ambient mana, you are able to sharply sense the island's location. You help Auriel correct her course until she's on a beeline for Erebus's home.

"...huh."

"What is it?" you ask her.

She taps a screen on her command console. "Sensors picked something up for a minute there."

"...can you switch to active screening? Just to be sure?"

"Good idea." Auriel taps a few keys. "And then...oh, Light."

"What? What is it?"

"That's an airship. Elements, it's huge. At least three or four times our size." She looks at you. "What could that possibly be?"

"Can you get us a better view?"

"Maybe. I'd have to get closer. It's a few miles away right now, right at the edge of what we can detect. But...might be better just to slip by. We don't want the attention of whatever's out here."

"Let's try to get closer," you tell her.

"Alright." She takes up the intercom. "Unknown airship spotted. I repeat, unknown airship spotted. Man your stations."

The Nemesis flies toward the enemy airship.

It's tremendous - dwarfing your own, which dwarfed others. It's not the sleek, air-repelling design of most modern airships, either. The outside is a mess of steel-bolted plates and metal projections. There are no windows, no obvious entrance points. It has no wings or fins, but is vaguely oblong.

An alarm sounds on the command console. Auriel swivels.

No sense in aerodynamics if there's no air, I guess.

How close did we get before being spotted, exactly? Might be useful to keep in mind if this encounter (or future ones with similar craft) comes down to trying to shake off the weapons lock and lose them.
>>
"Try to hail them before they fire!"

"Alright, here goes." She taps a button.

A screen flickers over the control console. Is reads -Awaiting Response-.

It hovers there for a moment, floating with a faint, empty crackling sound.

"...what's happening? It isn't working."

"They're not responding." She hits the button again. The screen blinks.

It remains blank.

"Shit! Redirect the earth dynamo and stealth power to shields! Armor down!"

The armored shutters that enclose the bridge's windows slam closed. You feel the mana in the ship shift to the bow just as two incoming missiles strike the hull.

Explosions rock the ship. Everyone grabs onto the railings as the floor shudders.

The ship integrity reading changes slightly - the nose of the Nemesis is now slightly yellowed, rather than a bright, healthy green.

"This is bad, Shadow. Real bad."

"What?"

"That was just the test volley. We've got 20 more of those missiles on the way."

"What the hell are they thinking? Are they just trying to destroy us?"

"Right now, that's what it looks like. At this range, we've only got the water cannon, and I've got to line that up. I think our best bet is trying to lose them."

What do you do?

Jump drive takes long enough to charge that I don't think we should use it immediately without trying more mundane evasive action first.

If something goes pear-shaped on the island itself, it'd be nice to have a quick out that doesn't involve needing enough time and a safe escape route to bail out manually.

Not responding at all to being hailed could easily mean that the ship is automated, as well.

>Every other ship had to be tampered with before we could pocket them, and those were small fry compared to this.
Mos of the other ships we've encountered have been Venian ones, which required heavy magical shielding in order to repel the Skysever. The high magic-resistance is the reason why it's difficult to Pocket those things, despite them being ostensibly inanimate objects.

This one has no need for that level of shielding, and could very well not even be shielded at all. It's huge and armored, but we didn't exactly sense any sort of magical signature on it, to the point and had to switch to manual detection in order to actually pick it up on sensors again after it only showed up as a small blip on the radar.

It doesn't even look like it's firing magical weapons; just seemingly mundane explosive missiles.

If it's actually 100% mundane, it could be that Pocketing it doesn't take any effort at all, and would only be limited by available space.

If I have to guess airship technology in Venia maybe inferior to other places due the constrains impose on it by the skysever.
>>
"I'm going to try to stop the missiles. Try to evade."

"You're going out there?!"

"Why not? It's the Void. I was Erebus."

You run from the bridge and up to main stairwell. You skip up the stairs, taking the landings in leaps in bounds. In a few seconds, you're at the ladder that leads to the emergency hatch on the top of the hull.

You clamber up with a dozen limbs in half a second. You wheel open the thick metal door, open it, and close it behind you, locking yourself into a tiny chamber. You open the second door in the same way, then climb outside.

A thin shield of Wind and Shadow surrounds the ship. Earth coats the steel. You crouch inside of the bubble of mana.

In the distance, you can see a field of growing grey twinkles. The enemy airship is a fleck out in the darkness.

You leap from the hull and blast into the air. There's nothing out here, no wind against your skin. Nothing to flap against. You focus on steering by pushing your aura around the underside of your legs.

You use Suicide Squad.

>mana: 63/76

A storm of clones and shades spreads out around you. You can't hear their screeching, though - there is no wind to carry the sound to your ears.

At this distance, it's difficult to judge speeds. It's only an instant before you slam into the flock of missiles.

Explosions erupt around you. You're caught in a storm of power.

You can't feel any magic from the enemy weapons. How is there so much energy with no magic?

You emerge from a cloud of debris and shrapnel, somewhat shaken, but relatively intact.

>you've taken 8 damage (73/81)

Five missiles made it past you. You watch the Nemesis turn as it tries to get out of the way. The missiles follow its path. Lightning cannon fire takes down four, but one gets through and strikes the hull.

You glance back.

A mass of missiles fills the space. 30? 40? You can't count them.

You're floating in the Void between the Nemesis and the enemy ship. The enemy missiles will be past you in seconds.

What do you do?

"...alright. I'll wait just past the skysever!"

Just as she cuts out, the missiles fly past you, silent explosive death. You watch them go.

The Nemesis glows. Shadow pulses around it. In a flash of violet light, it vanishes.

The missiles almost immediately swing around. For a horrifying second, you think they're going for you - but it looks like they're returning to their ship. That sure is something.

You decide to keep observing it for now. You push your aura behind you and make steady progress toward the ship.

It grows in your vision. You extend your senses, trying to feel at it for magic.

There's definitely something in it. Hundreds of little flecks. They're moving around. You're not sure what that is. Your first thought is that they might be crew, but these things don't have any soul. They're just ghosts of order with just the tiniest hint of chaos to give them life.

The rest of the ship doesn't sense like anything. It's entirely mundane.

Suddenly, light flares on the back of the ship. It accelerates at a tremendous speed.

You blast of at Supersonic speeds!

You feel the force press down on your body, but the whoomph of air is absent. It's a little odd.

The ship, while fast, can't accelerate immediately like you can. You gain ground quickly, then more slowly. Right about as you think it's going to outpace you, you wrap an arm around one of the metal projections.

There's a flat heavy disk covering the outside of the projection. The whole thing is roughly cylindrical in shape. Maybe this is where missiles come from?

What looks like a pretty big cannon sits underneath the hull. That's where you are now.

"Shadow! Come in, Shadow!"

You take up your radio. "...Auriel? Be quiet, I'm on the enemy ship."

"You're -on- it?" she hisses. "Abigail wanted to know if you were safe. The hell am I supposed to tell her?"

"This could be important. I've got to find out who's flying this thing. If anything happens I'll teleport back to Venia."

You hear the rush of a sigh over the speaker. "...fine. Please, please, don't do anything stupid."

"I won't. Tell her I'll see her soon. I'm going to pocket my radio now."

"Ok. See you shortly."

>mana: 61/76

You ink a tendril into the missile port. It's tough - the thing is airtight. The tip of your shadowy limb drills and hacks through the port until you've got a hole. From there, you forcefully expand your limb, causing the plate to buckle inwards enough for you to get by. You slip through the crack -

- and almost run smack dab into a missile. Phew. You're glad you didn't use more force. That could've been ugly.

You slide past the missile. There's another port on the other side. You repeat the process, and then, you're out.

>con't
>>
>>31589254
Have you not been here the entire quest?
>>
A massive room expands before you. It's cast in a bright light. You quickly clamber upwards along a few cables and steel supports, taking cover in the shadows above the hanging light poles.

Piles of missiles are stored in a room that looks like a massive warehouse. Various ports along the edges, leading out to other missile launchers, run the length of the gaping hallway. A machine is running the length of the room, automatically loading more ordinance in where it was previously spent. Control panels sit in front of each launcher, sitting quietly.

The one next to where you entered is blinking black and white. Maybe because of the damage you did?

It doesn't appear that there's anyone around. Many doors lead away from the ordnance storage chamber and into other parts of the ship. You can feel those strange half-presences moving about.

What do you do?

>you've seen this before. Wait for someone to come repair the launcher and observe.

>>

>>
>>31589373

The last time I clarified was a loooooooooong time ago.

The main difference is that Shadow attacks act in the same way as physical attacks, but have an associated Shadow element. That can have important effects depending on an enemy's resistance.

For example, you've got your normal sword, and then you've your sword enchanted with fire magic. They both swing in the same way, but one is good against ice monsters! Of course, that same sword is bad against fire monsters.

It gives you a way to perform a non-mana costing attack of your own element. If you have a light source, anyway.

I want to say it was on Damian Vonnegut's ship, when you were taking out his crew.

------------
------------

You decide to pocket a missile. Maybe Steward can make something of them.

Soon enough, one of the presences comes your way. You flatten in the deep shadows just above the lamp, and go still.

Far below, a person walks in. It's wearing thick clothing and a round helmet with a clear visor. A bag of various tools is attached to a thick leather belt sitting on its hips.

You can see its face through the visor. It looks very human.

You keep staring at it. Here is a human that has no soul. But it doesn't have the magical feeling of a demon, just the hint of order and chaos. What the hell is this thing?

It approaches the blinking console and starts tapping. It analyzes the output, then punches a few more buttons. A maintenance ladder extends from the launcher.

What do you do?

>Pocket - Forge a pocket within the nether that only you can access. The size of the pocket is determined by magic power level (3^lvl meters cubed. For example, pocket with magic level 2 = 9 meters cubed of space) You can reach the pocket at any time, assuming your magic is functional. Each object placed within or withdrawn from the pocket costs you 1 mana, independent of the size of the object. The pocket has no gravity, but starts filled with air, so living creatures could survive there. However, long periods in the nether are not good for the health of living things. You cannot transport yourself to your pocket.
It's currently 243^3 next level it will be 729^3.

Which isn't even all of why that's wrong. 243 and 729 are cubed already, so there's no time where either of those gets plugged in.

It's 3^5, or 3^6.

Everyone stop arguing about Pocket and get mind read so we can actually figure out what is going on here.

>>
>>31589633
>>Mind Read - Read a target's mind. Carries a risk of detection, depending on the target. Some targets may have passive mental defenses; backfires can be harmful. Best used on incapacitated targets.

we may also have to open up his helmet and use
>>Sleep Gas - Release a sleep-inducing gas to knock out your foes. The gas is potent, but isn't very useful in battle, or against powerful enemies.
>>
>>31589591
>>31589630
Consulting Humanity might be interesting, at the very least. See how hardline he is about what does or does not constitute being 'human'.

We can already sort of extrapolate there having being humans without magic from the old stories Donovan mentioned to us waaaaaay back in the day when we were still an idiot blob.

Which means having an intensely chaotic soul isn't a prerequisite for being alive. It's just the way things have been in Venia since the genesis of Magic at some indeterminate point in their distant past.
>>
>>31589632
the "^3" is just to denote that it is measuring volume instead of distance.

729m^3 is much more space than 729m

NO.

it doesn't know or think anything we don't know or think!

>>
>>31589559

To end this debate, the answer is:

Yes, and no.

The Nemesis 'ate' all the parts of the airships it absorbed, but it was already so big that it added relatively little volume. You've got to think surface area-volume relationship here.

In addition to that the Cirrus took up a large continuous space because of its long docking arms. That's a lot of free space for parts to fill that don't really add to the overall volume.

So, the Nemesis is somewhat bigger, but not actually taking up much more room.

---------
---------

If you buy MPVI, you'll have 3^6 meters cubed of space.

That is, 3*3*3*3*3*3 = 729 meters cubed.

The final verdict is that yes, you have enough space to pocket the entire ship at once if you buy Magic Power VI.

---------
---------

Buying Mind Read and using it.

You silently drop to the floor.

You pad up to the engineer.

He doesn't turn. He's busy at the console.

Your fist catches him in the gut. He doubles over. Your other fist catches him across the chin. He drops to the ground, unconscious.

You lean over him and pick his brain.

You see images. Flashes of memories. People at a table. A woman with a baby in her arms. Huge towers of steel and light. Tools, equipment. The wired guts of a strange vehicle. Pages of books.

It's a blast of incoherent nonsense. You try to stem the tide, find some sort of order amongst the chaos. No wonder Adavan had to take his time...

Slowly, patterns start to emerge. He's been doing repairwork for a long time - it's why he's an engineer.

You see him learning history. Avankt, Veldinsk. Islands floating in the Void, give energy by the dregs of the Great Sphere lingering in the distance. In-fighting between the two islands marked their early history.

And then, the God came, the Keeper of the Sphere. He brought with him one that had been cast out, risen to become his greatest servant. The islands bowed before their new master and savior.

They learned that they were the chosen people, the ones picked by god to survive and thrive. The aberrations of nature on the Great Sphere had to be erased to restore order to the universe, lest the power of Chaos be unleashed and consume everything. The God and his prophet would venture to the Great Sphere and cleanse it of the parasite world.

The chosen people were given a sacred mission: contain the parasites. If any parasites were to venture into the sacred lands beyond the sphere, they were to be eliminated. To this end, they were gifted great advances of science and technology, miracles, and the great bloodline of the True Chosen was founded.

The God and Prophet left for the Sphere. It has been foretold that on the day of their return, the parasite lands shall be vanquished, and the chosen people will ascend with God to live upon the sphere in their stead.

------

You bring yourself out of the man's mind.

By the elements. What does this mean? Venia is a parasite world on the Great Sphere? That must be the barrier. But...did Erebus come to these people and give them his power?

Why? What is all this for? Did he fear the core of chaos that much?

You've learned all you can from this man. But what do you do now?

You decide to leave. Your conscience can't quite justify leaving everyone in this ship to suffocate in the middle of the Void.

You check to make sure the engineer is alright, and then you slip out the way you came.

Once you're outside of the ship, you kick off the launcher, and drift for a time, letting the ship dissappear into the blackness. And then, you turn, and Supersonic back toward the twinkle of Venia.

---------

Everyone at the table is silent.

You've finished your explanation of what you saw, and what you learned. The wall of the skysever drifts behind the bridge, silent in the gape between you and the plate of the world.

"...parasite world." Hemmelus scratches at his beard. "What does that mean? That we're leeching off the energy from the core?"

"You should have ended those zealots while you had a chance," Auriel says. "What if they come back with others?"

"I couldn't just kill them all."

"I agree with Shadow," Ila says. "They might be misguided, but they weren't killing us for the sake of it. Maybe they don't even know we're human."

"And, to be fair," Abigail adds, "they have a point. Magic itself - spells, demons - these things are what weakened the barrier over time. I don't agree with their means, or what Erebus was trying to do, but it's the same problem we have now, isn't it?"

"...hmph. Well, don't cry to me if they show up with more of those damn missiles. It's gonna be days before the hull's back in the same shape is was."

"Well, we've got that long until the island," you say. "Let's get going."

their enmity with Erebus was correct by sheer coincidence.

but they thought Erebus was dead, destroyed by the four higher elemental lords' glorious sacrifice.

They were not right in the present day, where Erebus is dead, and they decide to hunt and persecute the four lower elementals when their own magic is more chaotic and dangerous to the world than Shadow.

The situation is getting worse regardless of crack status.

After taking the missile to Steward for study, you decide to speak with Abigail.

It's been lingering in the back of your head - what she said to you before the battle, that is. That she wants to talk.

Is that good? Is it bad?

You pause in front of her door, your hand raised to knock. Maybe...maybe you should wait. Just until the barrier is fixed. And then...then you can talk.

Why do you feel so nervous? Not like it's a big deal. Yeah. It can -

"Shadow?"

You swivel so fast your legs turn to ink to support you. The air whips slightly from the speed. "...Abby."

"Hey." She's dressed in casual clothes. There's a plate of food in her hands. "I was just coming back from the lower decks. Um...what's up?"

"Well. I. I just, uh, nothing."

"...you want to, maybe, come inside?"

"Uh, sure."

"Ok."

Abigail opens the door to her room. You follow her mechanically. She sets the tray aside and looks at you. "Um...maybe this is about what I wanted to ask you."

"Sort of. I mean, mostly. Well, yes."

She smiles. "Are you nervous?"

"No. Somewhat."

"Hee." She gets up and stands next to you, folding her arms behind her back. "I make you nervous, huh?"

"...yeah."

"Well." She stands straight. "I...wanted to know...if you wanted to make things, more official."

"What do you mean?"

"Um...you know...like...be together permanently." She looks down at the floor. "I mean, in Jacob's Field, marriages...they were big celebrations. So, I always thought, that maybe someday that could happen. But if those sorts of things aren't...you...I mean, I understand. I didn't want to impose, but...I know I said I wasn't sure how serious we should make things until the war was over. Um. Sorry. I didn't really word that very well."

She'll be our shoulder to cry on, our rock in a world rattled into uncertainty. The only thing keeping us from regressing into full Erebus.

"I'll be honest, Abby," you say. "It doesn't have the meaning for me that it does for you. But if it would make you happy, then let's get married."

"...really?"

"Sure. Actually, Donovan said I shouldn't let you propose to me. Because that would be awkward. So...well, I hope I get this right." You go down on one knee and take her hand. "Abigail Fang. I want you to stay with me. For as long as we live. Please marry me."

"Oh." She sniffs. She's crying. "...jeeze. Um...yes. I'll marry you, Shadow."

You stand back up, and pull her close, and kiss her.

She kisses you back. Hard. Very hard. So you meet her effort.

She drags you across the room, still kissing you. She falls back on her bed. She looks up at you. "...you didn't have time to stay with me, before."

"Well, I think it'll be a few days before we get there."

"I know."

"Your dinner will get cold."

Abigail grins. "Never change, Shadow. But...I really don't care about dinner right now. Right now I want something else."

"What?"

"You," she whispers.

You put a knee down on the bed and lean over her. You kiss her neck, and then her cheek, and then her lips again. "...Abby?"

"Mmm?"

"...are you sure about this?"

"More than anything. But..." Her face is filled with a deep blush. "I've, um, never done it before."

"...I kinda know how it goes."

"...show me."

{Cynicism} - Empowered

If Yi Fang was approaching us with this, sure. We remind him that he said he was going to lay off the puppetmastering and tell him to stop being such a dick. But it's not him, and she's not saying this because of her political aspirations.

Whether or not there's a ceremony doesn't change the political implications in the slightest; it's not like anyone's seriously going to be arguing about the legal status of Not!Erebus' relationship. We're already stuck with the political baggage just by virtue of association. Letting the girl live out her mildly childish fantasy and toss a bouquet doesn't change a thing.
