A single worker stands watch near the base of your mountain. The rising sun of the new day hardly pieces the thick overcast sky, and as your worker maintains its vigil it begins to rain. The day is warm despite the dense clouds, and the mud runs thick with the waterlogged spores that often fill the air.

You are the Hive Queen, the driving force and singular will of the hive. It was born because of you, and it will live for you. You have raised your first clutch of drones and with them you have secured your pod from the dense fungal forest. The thinker within has been carefully removed and has been put to work analyzing the nutrient filled jelly that stains the spring water in your hive. The pod itself has been salvaged for resources, torn to pieces and consumed. It has provided a small boon to your reserve of nutrients and metals. Now that your workers have returned you can focus on expanding.

You now know that you are not alone on this planet, and that the creatures you have encountered are very strange indeed. You have yet to determine the location of their hive, if that is what they even live in, and have explored very little of the surrounding area. They seem to be easily frightened, but they still seem unaware of your presence and you have no way of knowing their intentions or temperament.

Six workers are currently standing lookout at the entrances of your hive, with them you see a group of small objects flying in a circular pattern over the forest, otherwise the area appears calm.

You know full well that the only way to survive shall be to expand your hive, but you have reached the limit of what the nutrient rich jelly you harvest from the fungal mass in your chamber can provide. You could pull in a full harvest, but it would likely kill the fungus, putting an end to its steady stream of resources, but granting you a large sum immediately. Regardless, you will need to find a new source of food if you are to feed any more drones.

sweet, I love these sorts of quests.

Let's send out some drones to search deeper in the caves (5, maybe?) and some to explore the forest (10), both parties looking for more food sources. The remaining ones are on look out and we will consult the thinker about maximizing the output of the fungus
>>

>>
>>31548855
Let's send some drones to see if there is any edible plant or animal life around the forests. Let's say, 10.
I want to send 2 west to investigate the shifting ground that you described last thread. This should be covert. If they die it is no problem.
Some of the 10 should definitely head south to see if they can find that stampede we saw last thread.
>>
>>31548855
Your drones have been patrolling the cave network looking for any dangers. The caves seem to all extend outwards from the spring in your chamber, which is a large circular room roughly fifteen feet in diameter. In the center is a large fungal mass that secretes a sweet, nutrient rich jelly which it uses to filter minerals it feeds on from the water. You have been able to use the jelly to support your hive until now.
There are three caves that extend from the chamber and wind through the rock of the mountain to the valley beyond, depositing the red stained water into a small river that separates the valley from the fungal forest, and leads west.
Using the thinker's processing power, you come to the conclusion that the jelly is produced at a fixed rate to correspond to the abundance of natural minerals in the spring. You cannot think of any way to increase the output, but it may be possible to grow new fungi to produce it.
>>
>>31549059
Have the drones explore in a small radius around the cave. Take stock of our surroundings.
>>
>>31549059

Current suggested options
>send drones west
>send drones south
>send drones to comb the forest for food

Please select a division of labor
>>
>>31549113
Let's see if the Thinker can think of a way to farm the jelly.
>>
>>31549113
2 west
2 south
10 to comb the forest for food

The first two are just gathering intelligence. We need to know what is there.
>>
>>31549113

>send drones south - 5
>send drones to comb the forest for food - 10

>>31549113
let's send 2 west, 3 south, and 10 looking for edibles. Leave 5 home to play look out.
>>
>>31549149

Seconded
>>
>>31549149
I don't think we should send them all away from the hive. 2 is sufficient.
>>
>>31549151
This is good.
>>
>>31549092
The cave's three exits go south, southeast, and southwest, but the streams they produce all converge in the river bellow. The central cave that you have made your home is fifteen feet in diameter and is flooded with a shallow pond of red jelly, In the center is a large mass of mossy textured fungus that has made for a very comfortable throne for you, and is slightly glows slightly with a faint blue light.

>>31549144
Should you gain a large amount of the minerals that it feeds on, you believe you could grow more fungus to produce more jelly, however you are unsure of the nature of these minerals at the moment, and have no way to find more. Your thinker contemplates this, and feels that a survey of the area would permit him to make a more knowledgeable guess as to where to find more such minerals.
>>
>>31549239
In that case, lets have one of the workers staying at home take rock samples of the cave, let's try and figure out what we might be able to mine.

You split up your drones and send them all out, sending the bulk of them into the jungle of giant mushrooms clouded in a fog of spores.
The rest you split between south and west.

As your drones move south, the river soon tapers into a stream of rainwater, and the rolling hills flatten out to a wide plain of thick moss. You see very little in the area apart from a large cluster of shapes in the distance. It is difficult to make them out in the rain, but they seem to be quite large in size, and there are a great many of them. They appear to still be some distance from your drones.

West ward your workers follow the river. The area is thick with mud and the uneven terrain slows your workers as their claws become stuck several times. Eventually they reach what seems to be an endless plain of foamy, orange moss that pulsates rhythmically. The ground slants downward towards it, and at the edge you can see water seeping from under the moss, breaking it apart as shallow waves crash along the shore. The entire ocean has been covered by the stuff, it seems.

In the forest your drones find all manner of living creatures, large and small. Every 'tree' is a massive mushroom or misshapen growth and the rain is no more than a trickle of water dripping from the solid canopy. The drones are not used to such an environment and their progress is slow. You are unsure if there is even such a thing as a fruit or vegetable on this world. As your drones make their way they detect the crunching of foliage, and the sound is getting closer rather quickly.

Your drones quickly make their way up the trunks of the surrounding mushroom trees, their claws seeping into the spongy bark. As they near the first layer of canopy the forest explodes with life. Various creatures you had assumed only plants go spiraling into the air, and all manner of creatures disguised in the foliage sprint in all directions. As they do so a large armored creature bursts through the brush, its gaping maw devouring the slowest of the fleeing animals. It rears its head and opens its mouth like a blossoming flower to display rows upon rows of teeth. It is clearly still hungry.

(I'm afraid the site may break again so I just rolled for the creature's perception)

Your drones duck down and hug the trees, hoping to avoid detection. The creature lumbers about, thrashing its claws into the dirt as it tears at something under the surface. A large tail emerges, squirming in the creature's grip as it tears at its slick hide. It appears to extend further into the ground, but the predator seems satisfied with his work and begins to eat the strange worm. You think it may be distracted by its kill and use the opportunity to move away, but as you do so you notice a strange wound on the creature's tail. It appears to be a burn mark that has seared through the thick armored hide and out the other side. You can't think of any natural way such a wound could occur. Could this creature have had a run-in with the bi-peds?

Your drones continue their march, now with much more caution as the sounds of gnashing teeth fades behind your group.

Before long, you encounter a small clearing. The area seems to have been cleared, flattened in an artificial way. The moss has been torn up and the foliage pressed in a circular pattern, and in the center are a small pile of bones and fabric. You recognize the fabric as the suits you saw the bipeds wearing.

Your drones fan out, scanning the perimeter for any sign of activity. As you circle the area you make note of other remains, mostly shells and lumps of cartilage. It appears bones are a rare adaptation on this planet.

As you finish the circle one of your drones spots a small stain of red spattered on one of the trees near the edge of the clearing, with the sign of a struggle. Burn marks like the one you saw on the predator earlier are scattered across the area, and a trail of dried red fluid moves away from the clearing and into the thick of the forest.

As you contemplate the nature of these things, you can hear the familiar crunching sounds of the beast approaching from behind.

It begins to move in a circular motion, rampaging in a tiny circle around the single tree before curling up around it. With its large claws it begins to scrape at the ground in an almost ritualistic manner and you see chunks of flesh rub out and into the dirt.

In the middle of this strange grooming ceremony it stops, abruptly, and casts its alien gaze to the ground. It lumbers across the ground and as it does so it become clear it is moving in your direction. Your workers back away, and it slowly follows, swinging its head from side to side in a scanning motion. Your drones give it room, and as you fear it has found them it lets out a thunderous roar as steam flairs from a series of holes along its side. It charges forth, almost trampling one of your workers as it rushes past its hiding spot. Something has its attention, and it isn't you.

The beast thunders through the forest so quickly it is more akin to burrowing. Your workers have a difficult time keeping up and soon you are left to just follow its trail, and quite the trail it makes. Your thinker is giddy at all the new data.
"Queen, Queen! Thing does not hide, does not care who follows. Other things fear it!"
You agree, it is loud and leaves a massive trail behind it. You pat the thinker's head for its deduction and it beams with pride. You hope there isn't anything even more aggressive on this world.

The sound of lightning interrupts your thoughts. Six blasts of thunder accompanying six blinding flashes from within the forest, and you hear the creature scream. Your drones move carefully, doing their best to not be seen, and soon find the creature...or what remains.

The creature has four large holes in its body, and behind it more burn marks are blasted into the thick mushroom trees. Two other burn marks are scattered on the ground, the dirt around the point of impact has become red-hot glass.

One of the bi-peds is sitting against a tree, its bubble helmet has shattered and torn chunks of its face into strips. Its legs appear to have been gouged by something, and are set at odd angles. Both of its arms are held straight out, and are struggling to hold a small round object it its shaky grip.
It screams, and as it does a bolt of lighting erupts from its small device, grazing the side of one of your workers. Several more bolts are loosed and they arc wide, its arms no longer able to hold the weapon as it begins coughing up thick globs of blood soaked spores. and slumps to the ground.

No longer a threat, your workers move in around it as it stairs up into their eyes. It is terrified, but quickly loosing consciousness. What do you do?

So long as we're talking about wild new mutations, we might as well try to create some sort of parasite/infiltrator drone that we could slip inside him, before healing him and letting him toddle off home.

I for one am against taking it to the hive, we don't know these creatures don't have telepathy or the ability to follow a scent trail. I would be for just taking the thing's technology (the lightning generator) and the carnivore's body, but leave the biped uninjured to be found by its kin. They're clearly pack animals and that means the survivors would retaliate against violence.

In fact, it may be best to take a roundabout route to the hive to discourage these creatures from finding it.

Again, these things are clearly evolved from prey creatures and capable of violence. Arousing their fear seems unwise. Frankly, I don't see what's so fascinating about this species besides the fact that it seems non native. We can always collect the other one's bones if we want a DNA sample.
