You are Joshua Thirteen, UNAAF Special Forces Division Seven. A soldier of the highest degree, and have been fighting the war against the demons for the past eighty years. You were winning the battles, but losing the war. Even in the horrors of war, you built a life for yourself with a woman, Lauren, whom you had saved. But humanity was betrayed, you were betrayed. When you recovered, you found yourself in an unprecedented world, a backwards world living in fear of the demons you very nearly triumphed against.

But the strange world you’ve found yourself in is not without allies. The Dragon slumbers nearby. Your lesser demons seem to be scattered around the capitol city of Lyr, though they are resisting your contracts with them. You were just reunited with your younger sister Alice, another child of Special Forces Division Six, and she’s as energetic as always. And if anyone could survive the betrayal that incapacitated you, it would be your brother Matthew, he is surely somewhere in this country, waiting for you to find him.

To return a favor, you agreed to be Cyn’s bodyguard for the night, only to get tangled up in a political mire at some kind of underground fighting pit. And the special of the night was throwing their fighters at your magpie to kill it. You flick the blood off your new blade as the headless guard falls to the ground. Elector Novak, Elector Cubiere, and Advisor Orion are all next to you, staring in shock, but only a few people in the crowd noticed your kill. Most are distracted by the demon.

Some easy facts.

We don't need to burden ourselves with making enemies of these men
We're strong enough to bust the magpie out of any reasonable prison
We have no need to stick with Cyn
When we do get the demon loose, we have to get it out somehow, and assume it can protect itself after that
Finally, we have to fix our contract with it, FIRST

>We're strong enough to bust the magpie out of any reasonable prison

It's a cage specifically made to keep a demon inside. We've not been shown to have a significant superiority in strength to demons with our current power level.

>We don't need to burden ourselves with making enemies of these men

Tell that to them, one of their guards just tried to kill us.

>Finally, we have to fix our contract with it, FIRST

Yes, obviously the thing you do in a panicky mob situation is try to force an inhuman monster to submit to your will.
>>
>>31545202
To be fair, a magpie is like a small pterodactyl that eats corpses. Not a strength powerhouse. Furthermore, since it's your magpie, it isn't even close to full strength. So the cage it's in won't have to be terribly strong.

“I have something to take care of,” you state. “Maybe I’ll see you all around another time, hopefully not.” You leave the three nobles to their bafflement. The remaining guards are too scared of you to pursue, so you manage to merge into the crowd around the arena. The viewers can’t seem to decide whether to be afraid or mesmerized. From the announcers frantic shouting, you learn that the magpie has made it into the fighting pit early, and he’s still trying to drum up betting for it.

You eventually start pushing people out of your way. By the time you reach the inner mob, you’re practically swimming through bodies and getting more than a few pissed off shouts. And then your magpie this the top of the cage, latching onto the chain with its claws like a bat. Its weight is enough to make the ramshackle cage sag and strain, but it doesn’t quite break. You finally get a good look at the demon after all these years.

It was once almost the size and strength of a small drake, but it has gotten smaller since. Skin and flesh are stretched tight across his skeleton like some of the wasteland rejects you would see from time to time. He’s not doing well. When he sees you, he shouts and shrieks, chirping in the base tongue he knows. He’s pleading with you to break him free.

“The Dach Brothers will face this menace! Our patrons need not fear, these brave warriors have never been defeated when together and have sworn to chop the head off this demon!” the announcer shouts as you see four demi-humans appear in the arena beneath your magpie. They’re each armed with spears, but they won’t have the reach to hit your magpie if he stays on the ceiling.

You push aside the final people and grab the fence, shaking it to bounce the demon back and forth, just barely out of range of the spear tips. The demon hisses at you. “I have returned you fucking bird. You took what was no longer yours and I demand it back,” you shout at the demon.

The magpie hisses and drops off the ceiling in time with your shaking, and crashes into the ground, within the range of the demi-humans’ spears. The shout in surprise and try to bring their weapons to bear, but it simply rips open its great maw. It grabs the nearest wolf man, its razor sharp teeth ripping through his bare flesh. A soldier might have stood a chance, but blood sports have weaknesses.

The other three wail as the magpie rends the man apart, devouring every piece torn off. When one of them finally comes to his senses and lunges forward, his spear tip only bites into the corpses of his brother, and the demon leaps back to the ceiling. You can see the paunch of gore filling it’s gut, and know that in mere moments it will metabolize. The crowd is aghast, but some are cheering. The sight is atrocious, but means that no one is paying you any attention as you slide over to the entrance to the pit.

By the time you reach the locked gate, you hear the demon chirping laughter to itself. When you glance over, he’s staring at you. Then you feel the seals on your chest form as GRD makes his presence known. “He doesn’t trust you. If he dies, he takes his power with him after all. If you get your power back, you have no reason to keep him alive.”

“And what the hell do you want GRD?”

“I want my own host. You wouldn’t give me the child, so give me the magpie.”

“Fuck off, your deals are poison. All you learned from me was bitterness and hatred,” you reply to the fungus before grabbing the door to the arena and ripping the lock off. The snap of the metal cuts through the cries of the crowd, but only the announcer seems to notice you entering. GRD begrudgingly settles back down as you walk into the small waiting zone before the actual arena.

“It seems we have an ambitious challenger forcing his way into the arena folks! Is it to save the Dach Brothers? To take the demon slaying glory for himself! Be sure to place your bets before it’s all over. Our bookies will be happy to negotiate as events unfold!” the announcer shouts.

You scowl and kick the final door in, snapping the lock off and nearly breaking the hinges. The three survivors turn to you in surprise, giving the magpie a chance to attack, but the demon is slow with a full gut. Before he can grab another of them, you dash forward and knock the man out of the way. When the magpie lands in the sand next to you, you reach down and grab it by the neck, hoisting the struggling thing into the air.

When it looks over your shoulder and sees the open entrance, he starts squawking, frantically looking between you and the door. You can even feel a trickle of your power return for a moment before it cuts off.

“Hey, who the hell are you? This is our kill! That monster just killed Baldric!” the nearest demi-human shouts as your magpie starts scratching at your arm and side. You glare at him for a moment before turning back to the animal.

“I can make do without you. I can get out of here. You can’t. You have no choice,” you growl at the animal. You squeeze tighter around its neck, getting it to twitch and spasm before you let up. “Give me my power back and we return to the original contract, you survive.”

The demon stares at you for a moment before going limp. Then you feel the seals on your chest awaken, and you see a matching seal across its maw. It exhales and wilts in size as you feel your strength return in full. The smallest portion of your power certainly, but far more than what you’ve had. You can feel your senses come back to life, and your stomach rolls, demanding more food, but it is a good hunger, a hunger of the powerful.

One of the demi-humans snarls and lunges forward with his spear tip. You slice the tip off before it even nicks your demon. When he stops in confusion, you strike again and shatter the shaft of the spear in his hands, sending him reeling back.

Then you turn to the crowd. The cheering is gone, only anticipation. Then someone shouts out, “Kill the damn thing already!” and a chorus of support rolls around the arena.

“Absolutely not,” you declare, cutting the noise from the room. “Seek not to fight the demons. Is that not what your country believes? I have never seen a people so pathetic that they would cage an animal and starve it so they could kill it for sport. I will not abide it.”

The crowd is silent.

“What the hell are you going to do with it? You’re not just going to let it go free are you?” one of the arena guards asks as you rise from the arena pit. He’s drawn his sword, but is trembling and stepping back instead of forward.

“That’s exactly what I’m going to do.”

“Fuck you man, we all have families up there! I can’t let you just release a child eating monster!”

“Some demons are little more than animals. And this one is sick at that,” you say as you raise the magpie higher and let it grab onto your other arm. “If you don’t attack them, and don’t give them food, you have no need to fear them. They’re just big animals,” you explain as the magpie sinks into your arms and curls its head over your shoulder.

You start walking back to the staircase up to the catwalk when the announcer starts talking again. “Now, just to be clear everyone, unless you specifically bet on this happening, then your bet is considered to be a loss and we are not responsible for reimbursing you, no matter the unlikelihood of this event. Furthermore, as we did not provide the demon, we will not be taking any responsibility for losses incurred by it. Take it up with Advisor Orion if you must.”

Then someone else takes hold of the rudimentary amplifier. “Rejoice citizens of Lyr. For you have just witnessed confirmation of our beliefs. This is a man truly blessed by the Dragon. A Fire-Blooded,” Advisor Orion says. You look down on the crowd from the catwalk, demon in your arms. They’re looking to you in awe. They remind you of the time you cut through half a marauder war band to retrieve a stranded platoon.

Why are you all calling him a dick?

Is Orion genuinely in awe of us? If yes, we could use this as an in to the elf crowd for some political clout.

Bunch of people have been wanting to the change the world, but they seem prefer to alienate anyone that could be a useful ally instead.
>>
>>31547542

Personally, I'm saddened at the loss of technology, but I couldn't care less about the rest. Let them live how they want to live, imposing our will on them as an outsider just makes us a dick.

I'm pretty sure al-qaeda bombed the world trade center because the american society was "a reflection of how far society has fallen. We need to fix it."

Sure we won't be a terrorist, but that kind of attitude about people reflects poorly on us.
>>
“If you build yourself a savior, they will only let you down,” you respond. You shake your head and continue out. The moment you start up the staircases, the awe you held over the people is broken. Gamblers start shouting about their wagers, fighters shout about debts they have yet to pay off, and the announcer quickly starts trying to coordinate the next fight.

The remaining guards outside the warehouse jump away when they see you carrying your magpie. One of them pulls out his sword, but you strike it from his hand and continue on. It’s nearly a full moon now, more than enough light for your magpie to find his way. You can hear the river nearby, so you make your way through the alleys to it. When you reach the shore, you nudge your magpie and rouse him. “You’ll just be hunted down here, find a new home. Return only if you truly must.”

The demon pushes out of your arms with a lazy flap and falls into the water. You quickly step forward, peering into the inky depths for a moment, hesitating on whether you should follow it. But then you see blood fill the water, and the magpie pulls itself out on the bank, maw dripping with the guts of bottom feeding fish. After it swallows, it takes to the air in lazy circles slowly getting higher.

“Now that is truly something I never thought I’d see. Just how the hell did you do that?” Cyn asks as she walks up behind you. Seems she escaped just fine.

“Sure is. I couldn’t have asked for anything more from you. I’m sorry they cut you,” Cyn explains as you walk back over.

“This is nothing, it already stopped bleeding.” You glance up at your magpie. It’s still circling. It should have picked a direction and left by now.

“Don’t be too modest. You could open it back up. Let’s get you back to the brewery and cleaned up. I’ll have Henry come over to stitch you together, no charge,” she says as she grabs onto your arm. “Then we can have a few drinks over a job well done.”

“Well done? Seemed to go poorly to me.”

“You did a job well done. Mine was nearly the worst case scenario, but the trick is never making a move you can lose at, that way you can never fall behind. But I don’t want to bore you with such delicate politics. I’m sure you don’t have the slightest interest in them,” she explains as she leads you back to the brewery, leaning her head on your shoulder.

Then you notice your magpie finally choose a direction, and heads towards the Palace.

“Damn bird,” you grumble as you watch it disappear behind the warehouses. “Cyn, I’ll have to get back to you on that. I have to go,” you say as you pull your arm away from her and start running down the streets. You quickly find a spot to scale up the side of a wall and take to the rooftops, rather than wasting time maneuvering between buildings, down alleys, and over debris.

The power you recovered from the magpie is still stabilizing in you, some leaps are too quick or too large, but you manage to keep your balance and continue the chase. Some guards see you on the rooftops since you aren’t bothering to stay hidden, but you’re gone well before they would even bother to do anything.

You reach the Palace walls soon enough, covering the miles in just a few minutes, and the magpie has yet to land. You scale the wall with ease. This time, you don’t come face to face with a guard, but your gut warns you of something worse.

You freeze, perched on the lip of the wall, watching your magpie spiral down around a guard tower. Your gaze slowly descends on it, and the silhouette perched on the peak. You recognize her immediately. Even without feeling her seal burn on your chest as she tries to pull what little power of hers you still have back, you would have recognized her.

“My poor little pet, what have they done to you?” Victoria pouts as your magpie lands on the tower next to her. “You were so strong before he smuggled you away from me. I guess that bastard is out and about again,” she says as she turns and looks at you.

“Good evening Vampire,” you say.

“My my. Showing yourself already? And you seem so weak. Don’t tell me our little bird is the only one you’ve gotten your hands on,” she says as she stands up and turns towards you. You sorely wish you had your old sword right now. “I think you might even be weaker than our little sister. This is kind of cute, in a ‘I’m going to kill you’ kind of way, you know?”

We can take her!

>>
>>31549290
He didn't say that is why. But come on, the palace just happens to keep a demon for a century without someone pulling strings? .
>>
>>31549371
I thought they just captured it and had the manpower to keep it down, maybe the King was just the kind of guy to feed prisoners to a demon for shits and giggles.

That is just as likely as it being the vampire, in fact the only hint of her being here would have been when we sensed the presence out to kill us, but since the MC gave no info on what it could be, to us, any guesses would have just been complete shadowruns.
>>
>>31549448
>betrayal quest
>not shadowrunning to the maximum
>>
>>31549371
That really doesn't logically lead to vampire bitch in charge, though. It just means someone who lives a long time might have remembered you, and your siblings are confirmed to have lived a long time.
>>
>>31549497
Yeah, but there is about a hundred different things that I could think of about what that presence was, with the knowledge given so far, that could all be at least plausible, how were we supposed to guess the right one?

And stop trying to switch the discussion away from the fact we were supposed to somehow guess the vampire was there. I'm not mad, frankly I don't care she's even here, it just annoys me a tad when the QM wants us to think through all these vague possibilities and expecting us to come to the right conclusion, if he does, he should give some more concrete hints.
>>
>>31549509
True, but even in your conjecture, its a friend of the bird, not someone we had to protect him from
>>
>>31549604
I didn't expect you to guess it was Victoria, but I was flabberghasted you guys were afraid of it going bqck to the people feeding it for aCentury
>>
>>31549647
Yeah, we had no reason to expect that it was being fed due to people actually taking care of it, instead of just the monster they throw prisoners too.

You described it as sickly and ill kept. Not how you think an animal would be kept if it was a pet.
>>
>>31549704
Sickly yes, I apologize if I said I'll kept, he's just really fucking old, like twenty times older than he should be
>>
>>31549704
>>31549647
Just so you know, I still do enjoy the quest, I'm not angry. Just if you could give more solid hints we could pull together, if you want us to come to reasonable conclusions on things, that'd be great.

When's next thread?

Hey now, listen up.

You are trying to talk sense into /tg/ and get them to stop thinking with their dick. That's an uphill battle.

You can try to convince people, but it is more effective to vote how you will and hope other share your view and that you aren't drowned out by the players who don't give any thought to their choices.
>>
>>31558014
If you make a good argument or post particularly good dialogue, I hold the right to choose it over the majority. Voting silently as the group traps itself in stupidity is no fun for anyone.

You'll get bitter about your fellow players
They'll be bitter about bad choices
I'll get bitter about people being bitter

I'm pretty fairy sure that no one wants to dick or sister. At least it seemed like that.
/tg/ also loves their little sister types, are more often than not moralfags. Oh, they also think that telling the truth no matter what is the best choice.

Because it almost has to be someone we've talked about or encountered. Theres no way we could figure it out if there weren't at least some "obvious" pieces in play.
>>
>>31559332
Of course. The body is "easy" to make, the trick is getting the Dragon to give it a soul, which it refuses to do. He has a stick up his ass about the natural order, since its what he's been trying to fux this entire time

I could easily see the dragon as having said stuff to the effect of "QUIT FUCKING AROUND WITH TECHNOLOGY FOR A BIT, YOU ARE INADVERTENTLY SHITTING THINGS UP AND MAKING IT WORSE" and that getting distorted and passed down as 'everyone live as amish now'.

Once we actually run into the dragon, we should actually try and hear him out instead of being all 'hurp da durp fuck the dragon' like a bunch of other posters are saying.
>>
>>31561238
yeah, some people seem to be salty about him not giving much of a shit about us. But then again, he's a god, why should he bother himself so much with a single mortal?
