You had plans to lave Tianna for a while and attend to your nascent kingdom on the western side of the island, but it looks like you'll have to delay your departure.

Well. Your "nascent kingdom" is several hundred square kilometers of completely empty and uninhabited land, part of which was previously unclaimed and part of which was ripped straight out of the Wyld.

Alright, it's not really "nascent".

Your butler, Regis, and your maid, Millian, have prepared for you a room of Tianna's castle (part of its archives, apparently: the walls are lined with bookshelves filled to the brim) where you will be able to receive in a proper and dignified manner the people who, you've found out yesterday, would like to talk with you.

After being named as the queen's future spouse and your dance (and... other things) yesterday night at the festival in honor of Dancing Smoke, it's no surprise that people will want to have a chat with you, after all. Whenever there are shifts in power, there are people who will want to be a part of that.

You would love to be able to count on queen Amata's advice, in fact, but unfortunately she's also busy with state matters at the moment.

Tia, your Lunar Mate, intends to stand by you during these meetings. Even thought you... don't have much faith in her political acumen, you can count on her as a bodyguard, and just having her at your side makes you feel safer than any of the powers at your disposal.

Once everything is ready, Regis, perfectly dressed for the occasion, peeks into the small office: "The people looking to met you are here, Maka. Er, Millian said that by virtue of being Exalted, the Dragon-Blooded should have precedence. Should I call her in first?"

>Who are we?
Maka, an exiled noble recently Exalted as a Zenith-caste Solar. She's in the western city of Tianna as a guest of queen Amata (DB), an old friend. Abyssals are targeting the city for conquest, Lintha pirates have infiltrated it with spies and agents, and the Realm is probably planning to get rid of you. Enjoy.

>Solar? Zenith? I don't know Exalted...
This quest is as newbie-friendly as possible, and I want it to work as a newbie's intro to Exalted. If you have ANY question, ask in thread. For the setting, google "1d4chan exalted".

>Archive?
http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=zenith

>System?
Dicepool-like system. When performing an action, everyone rolls 1d10 when posting. the first X rolls are considered, where X is equal to attribute + ability. Yes, this means that the more people are posting, the stronger Maka is, up to a limit of her attribute + ability.

>XP?
Attributes cost [current score x5] xp. Abilities cost [current score x3] xp, except Zenith costing [(current score x3) -1]. Charms cost 10 xp, except for Zenith-based charms (related to charisma and physical/mental fortitude) which cost 8 xp. At the end of every "session" (thread) you will be presented with a list of possible acquisitions.

[dawn]
Fists of Iron (1 Ess, Scene. +1 damage once per combat, per enemy)
Heaven Thunder Hammer (Permanent, succesful hits have knockback effect)

[zenith]
Husband-Seducing Demon Dance (1 Ess. A performance you give causes anyone seeing it to instantly gain a positive feeling for you (love, respect, starry-eyed admiration, etc))
Respect-Commanding Attitude (1 Ess, Scene. Interrupts everyone and anything going on, in order to deliver a statement that will be heard)
Terrifying Glorious Presence (upgrades Majestic Radiant Presence: on top of its effect, all social attacks have 1 automatic success)
Phantom-Conjuring Performance (Perm. can fashion phantasmagorical images and sounds from your own Anima)

[twilight]
Judge's Ear Technique (1 Ess, Scene. Can tell when a person lies knowingly)
Courtier's Eye Technique (1 Ess, Can tell someone's backgrounds)

[night]
Graceful Crane Stance (permanent, gives you supernatural balance and lightness of step)
Lightning Speed (permanent, vastly improves your running speed)

[eclipse]
Mastery of Small Manners (1 Ess, you learn the short-term objectives of people in the scene. Gives straightforward ideas, but does not reveal complex plans)
Merchant's Wisdom (1 Ess, Scene, add +3 to all commerce, economy and bureaucracy-related rolls for the scene.)

The problem with Judge's Ear Technique is that people are paranoid as all fuck about spending essence and there's exactly zero chance in hell that people are going to choose to spend it on JET over a social-booster charm. The charms we actually stand the best chance of using are either Permanent charms or charms that are permanent upgrades to existing ones. We should probably stick to those until people actually prove more willing to keep ourselves below maximum essence.

Anyway, that's my feeling on it. It's cool as fuck, but it'll never be used. No reason to change your votes, just something to keep in mind.

>>31536191
Then let's make sure to activate it. It should prove terribly useful.

I would like any of the following:

>>
Rolled 6

>people are paranoid as all fuck about spending essence
This is especially true with social charms, because we can only use one before our anima flares
>>
Rolled 4

>>31536263
Exactly. That's why I think that we will approximately never - or close enough for it to not be worth the experience points - use a JET over a charm that offers us a more discrete bonus like MRP. Hell, look how rarely we use the fairly-awesome Talking to the Heart simply because people don't want to spend Essence on a one-off or flare our anima.

That's the main - entire, really - reason why I don't want to spend our experience points on JET. If it weren't for how we all collectively spend our essence, I'd be on board for really expanding our essence-costing charms. With it as context, though, permanent and permanent upgrades is the way to go.
>>
>>31536285
>Hell, look how rarely we use the fairly-awesome Talking to the Heart simply because people don't want to spend Essence on a one-off or flare our anima.
I think that's less people don't want to rather than we forget about it, it helps that JET is scene long rather than a one off we have to use everytime, for now in social scenes we've only been spending the one essence per use on MRP, I think really you're over estimating how little we'll end up using it, so I'll vote for it

>>31536021

I'm sorry, but I really do disagree. We've been intensely paranoid about using essence. We start freaking out as soon as we hit Essence 3 as if we're on the cusp of running out, and people are absolutely terrified of letting our caste mark show in social situations for some reason, meaning we never end up using more than 1 essence per scene unless we're fighting.

That said, it's of course your vote. I desperately hope I'm wrong, but I'm thoroughly convinced that getting JET will be a complete and total waste of experience at best.
>>
>>31536332
>We start freaking out as soon as we hit Essence 3 as if we're on the cusp of running out,
We started freaking out because we were in the wyld with two more battles left to fight

We really do need more essence though, we should think about raising mental soonish
>>
Rolled 2

>>31536332
We were fine with the caste mark showing during dancing smoke's festival and the dance, it was the dinner we didn't want it showing at. Unfortunately, I think we'll be encountering more scenarios like the latter than the former
>>
I really don't think TGP is worth it. 1 automatic success? We get ten fucking dice on Social rolls with MRP already. Doesn't that average out to 4 successes per roll? Do we really gain anything from getting another for free?
>>
Rolled 2

>>31536347
We've STILL been freaking out, though. We never stopped, after that one time we over-extended ourselves. We freak out every time we hit Essence 3. We freak out every time we might show our caste mark in a social setting.

We just plain freak out about spending essence.

It's shitty, but it's also sadly true.

>>31536356
Yes, that dance has been the singular exception, and people were still freaking out about hitting Essence 3 because 'oh god, what if we need to defend ourselves.' It's a tragedy and a travesty, but it's true as hell.
>>
Rolled 2

>>31536375
Yes. Larger social damage, a larger pool of successes than a similarly-capable social combatant, and an ABSOLUTE GUARANTEE that we will NEVER botch a social roll with it active. That and the fact that it's a flat, free, permanent upgrade to a charm we already have. Remember, we're not always going to be going up against people that are mortal, or un-specialized in social combat, or what have you. There are other exalts out there, and one of the Abyssals in particular seems to prefer social combat to physical.

It'll be absolutely great for us.
>>
Rolled 6

>>31536378
I think we need to focus more on the religious side of our social rather than the political, as it less of a big deal if we flare our caste mark in that setting.

At least, that's why I voted to do so there but not at the dinner.

After a few seconds, the Dragon-Blooded Millian mentioned walks in the room, loudly closing the door behind herself. Of average height and fairly pale skin, despite being clad in what one would consider a dancer's outfit she has a surprising amount of muscle on her lithe frame.

"...You're a lot more formal than I thought, miss Maka. Meeting me in a place like this?" She wonders, getting seated, or rather, slouching on one of the two chairs present in the room.

"Um." You stare at the Dragon-Blooded, Trying to guess what her deal must be. "In any case, pleased to meet you...-"

"Zareen." She replies, a name that doesn't ring any bells, not even when she adds the family name: "Zareen Inofu." She slouches a bit more on the chair. "...Your dance yesterday night was really something amazing, miss Maka. I really wanted to meet you after seeing that. Is it true that you're an Anathema? It's my first time meeting one."

"I'm a Solar Exalted." You confirm while at the same time rejecting that specific term casually. "Maka of Gem. What can I do for you, miss Zareen?"

"I would very much like if you could take me as a student."

"For dance?"

"Yes, of course." She replies, like it was't obvious.

What I'm asking are the following:

Oh, I absolutely agree. We should be picking up Eclipse and Eclipse-based bureaucractic/political charms. After all, we're trying to be a leader, and those are the epitome of political/leadership abilities. But people want to detect lies or get more successes by hitting people with social skills at the moment instead of being a better administrator/politician for some reason.

"...Why are you interested in me? You're not from Tianna, are you?" Something about this woman is suspicious, though you can't quite put your finger on it.

"No, I'm... originally from Coral. My family used to be from the Realm, though my grandfathers emigrated to work as merchants there."

"Dragon-Blooded?" Dragon-blooded don't "emigrate" from the Realm.

"Particians." That makes more sense. "Former patricians." That makes A LOT more sense.

"So, why did you pick up dancing?" You try and shift the conversation to a casual tone.

"...As a hobby. After my Exaltation."

"...So I guess you are inheriting your family business?"

"No. I Exalted in a slave trader's camp."

An ice-cold silence falls in the room.

The first reply that comes to your mind is an understating "I imagine that your family business must not have been very successful then", but you bite your tongue and keep that thought to yourself.

You might have been digging too deep in this woman, but now that you've gotten her talking...

You look at her: It's clear she didn't imagine she'd end up talking about this kind of past.

"... I imagine you haven't been a slave for very long after that, then."

"Not very long, no." You have no trouble imagining this young lady as an adolescent, made fit and strong by years of thankless physical labor, dressed in rags, broken chains around her wrists and ankles, covered in the blood and entrails of her slavers, perhaps clutching a freshly removed head in her hands. At least, that's the image you read in her eyes.

Another bout of uncomfortable silence passes. You smile.

"...You're not really a dancer, are you?"

"As a hobby." Her smile is forced and nervous.

You steeple your fingers and stare right into her eyes.

Not trying to intimidate her, but just make her feel like you're on to her. Like she's been busted.

The difference is that someone being intimidated will lie to protect himself. Someone who's been busted, however, has nothing to lose anymore.

"So, what do you want from me?" You ask her.

"My just due." She replies.

"I don't believe I owe you anything. I've never traded in slaves, or have any connection to Coral."

"I don't mean from you." She points out. "I mean from the world."

You gesture her to continue.

She points at herself with a hand on her chest, full of confidence. "I am Exalted. I have a right to rule, have I not? To be someone. But alone, with no allies, even with my power, I would not be able to carve a space for myself. And those who would grant it to me would only do so if i lowered myself to beg."

"You mean you have no intention to rejoin the Realm." You nod. "They call those like you Lost Eggs. They'd take you in, adopt you. Put you to work in their bureaucracy, their politics, their military."

"Even as an Exalted, I'd just be a gear in someone else's machine." She explains

"You want to be free?"

"Only the mad and the deluded are really free. I want to be a gear in my own machine. I want to be able to pick what kind of gear I will be, and have a voice in the machine's direction."

"You believe that I can give you that." You ask, or rather, state.

"You're like me." She grins. "You're out to carve a place for yourself. You're off to a good start already, it seems... and I want to be a part of that." She leans closer. "I can be of help to you. We can join forces."

You tap with your fingers on your knee. "I'm not sure things quite work the way you imagine."

"I'm sorry?" She asks back.

"There are some things that you have a right to. Being in a position of power is not one of those, even if you are Exalted."

"One of those rights that must be earned." She nods. "I am familiar with the concept."

Well, she DID earn her freedom in a way, you reason.

"How can you be useful? What can you do?"

She quietly stands up from the chair, and then lifts her right leg so high you never thought it would be possible and slams it down on you in an axe kick so fast you swear you saw, for a moment, a shockwave of compressed air forming on her heel.

Without time to stand from your chair, you lift both arms and cross them instantly over your head in a high guard. The impact disperses throughout your body, shattering the chair and sending you on the ground.

Spinning around on your back, you flash two low kicks at her in succession, aiming at sweeping her off her feet, but she leaps over them, having anticipated them. Her silk scarf wraps around your left ankle as you finish your second kick, and, when she tugs on the other hand, you slide closer to her, skidding on the rough floor and losing completely your balance.

While one of her hands is keeping you busy with the scarf tangling your other foot, she slams her other hand on her own chair. The wood bends, twists and turns into a bow and a single arrow, with no metal tip but still sharpened to a point like a bodkin. She pulls the string and points down at you, as you twist out of the veil and struggle back at your feet. She obviously held her fire: she could have shot you if she wanted.

Then, you both freeze as Tia, silent until now, slowly stands up from her chair at the far end of the room.

She doesn't say anything.

Zareen relaxes the pull on the bow, unnotches the arrow, and offers you a hand to stand back up.

"I'm a good dancer."

"You don't say." You note, as you get rid of the tangling veil and grab her hand.

Tia sits back down.

You sigh in relief.

"I also know some medicine." She brings the arrow's tip closer to your attention, taking care to point it sideways. A greenish sap is exuding from the wood near the point.

"Of course you do."

"And I guess I had a bit of home schooling in math and economy from my parents. When I still had them."

"That doesn't sound like much."

"Maybe not, but I learn fast."

"Did you learn something today?" Tia asks from her seat.

Zareen leaves the bow and arrow on a half-empty bookshelf, turns to her, and bows. "I did."

"Good."

The Dragon-Blooded still turns back to you.

After a few minutes, your next meeting arrives.

Inside the cramped office (new refurbished with two new chairs) waltzes a young woman with tan skin and delicate features.
She is lightly dressed, which is not usually something that goes noticed in Tianna's fairly tropical weather (and even less so by your standards as a Gem native), but her light bikini is beautifully printed with a floral pattern, matching the flowers pinned on her light skirt, around her neck, and on the large straw hat she immediately removes as she takes her first few steps in.

She must like flowers a lot.

Apart for that, every part of her suggests a well-mannered, educated, delicate young woman.

Except her eyes. Her eyes are very bright, and there's a strength, a purpose, a faith in them that really draws you in.

Disregarding the chair, the woman throws herself at your feet and slams both hands on the ground in deference. "I'M SO HAPPY I COULD FINALLY MEET YOU!"

That catches you a bit by surprise.

"Finally, the Unconquered Sun saw fit to send one of His emissaries to Tianna as well, to lead us and illuminate us and deliver us from the darkness of our future! It's a honor I can scarcely express! I, Pyre Spark, am at your command!"

You're used at people being very polite to you, but nothing on this scale. The part that strikes you the most, though, is how cheerful she is. She's not bowing to you out of fear or mere habit or tradition, that's for sure.

Oddly enough, the buzzing noise in your head you started feeling yesterday night is stronger now. It never really went away, just kind of vanished in the background until you could ignore it, but now it bounced back in your mind. Is this young priestess connected to it?

A 'pyre' is a flame used to immolate dead bodies. Her name is Pyre Spark. Not what one would expect from a priestess of the Sun. Names like hers [Noun:Noun] are generally given to their bearers during adolescence or based on their accomplishments. I am suspicious of her.

Eh, it's not that unusual out in the Threshold for people to change names as they attain new achievements, and incinerating corpses is the Unconquered Sun's standard method for preventing ghosts. Zeniths normally have an ability to let them incinerate and guarantee easy reincarnation of any corpse at will. She likely got the name at a temple of the sun working glorious corpse disposal.
>>
>>31539442
Performing rites to properly send off the dead is quite critical in their lower souls not returning to kill the living.
>>
"P- please, stand up." You urge her. "I don't want people to prostrate to me."

She looks like she's about to stand up, but instead she just hugs your knees. "But you're a Solar! An angel of light! A messenger of love, sent by the Holiest of Holies to bring his word upon the mortal realm!"

"Uh..." You wrestle her back in an upright posture and manage to get her to stop being grabby. "...Mayb- sort of- Look, this is getting a bit awkward even for me." You admit, casting a glance sideways to Tia, who, in her corner, is chuckling good.

You manage to sit back down on your chair, and this priestess with absolutely no concept of personal space autonomously decides that if she isn't allowed to be at your feet, she will sit in your lap.

And she is not even sitting upright, but leaning on you. Should you say something?

"You smell so nice." She says. At that point, you just give up.

With her so close, the buzzing noise is very intense. Not so much that it's painful or distracting... actually, it's kind of soothing. Like... the only apt comparison that comes to your mind is how it's somehow more pleasant to have a light, repetitive, unobtrusive background noise than complete silence. Like the sound of waves gently lulling you to sleep.
Except this buzzing sound isn't making you sleepy. Okay, it was a lousy comparison.

"Uh... Spark, can you tell me a bit about the Sun cult here in Tianna? I don't know much about it, actually."

"There's always been some sun worshipers here in Tianna, though the Immaculates never liked it. We've been bullied and pushed around, sometimes attacked. Queen Amata kept them somewhat in check, but always favored them over us."

"That's changing, though." You point out.

"Are you really marrying the Queen? That's so romantic!" She looks up at you, starry-eyed. She's actually pretty short, so even sitting on your lap hr head is still lower than yours. "Tianna will turn into a sun kingdom then! Are we going to kick the Immaculates out?"

While the Unconquered Sun is known across Creation as the sun god and the most powerful Celestial Incarna, that knowledge has taken on a sort of distance in the hearts of the people. "How do you get them to stay up by themselves like this? Is this Solar magic?"

Tia is almost choking herself, meanwhile.

"...What arguments were you talking about?" You force the discussion to continue.

"Well, our congregation is for the worship of the Unconquered Sun, though we of course also worship Solars as his emissaries...-"

"Wait a second." You stop her.

She pulls her hands away from your chest, looking like a kid caught with her hands in the cookie jar. "Oh. Sorry."

"No, I didn't mean that-" You don't manage to bite your tongue in time, and, taking that as consent, she returns to her examination of your anatomy. She seems genuinely motivated by curiosity and fascination. "...I meant, what did you just say? You- your people actually worship me?"

"Actually, that's part of the argument." She points out. "Some among the cult insist that the worship should only be directed at the Sun, although it's alright to pray to him with the intermediation of a Solar, especially of the Zenith caste such as yourself. Others want to worship you directly."

Alright, here's the thing guys. I really want input on this point. We want to be worshipped, but not in the normal way. We don't want people bowing down and begging to a distant powerful figure - that's shit. What we want is for their prayers to us to be things along the lines of:
>Please do well in your fight against the Lintha!
>Please don't die!
>Keep doing a good job!

Those kinds of prayers nourish us EXACTLY AS WELL as the other kind, and don't make us out to be some kind of unattainable perfect being, per se. Just someone who benefits by being worshiped as much as they do by having our protection and help. It's about the establishment of a relationship, rather than them just begging and praising us for our power.

Thoughts?
>>
"Well..." You scratch your head, confused utterly by this turn of events. "I'm not a goddess. I don't want to be worshiped as a goddess. What I am is a Chosen and a priestess of the Unconquered Sun. All I can be is an intermediary."

"Oh, no." You explain quickly. "No, you'll stay and keep being the head of the congregation! I'll just lead some prayers in special events."

"But... you have a direct channel to the Unconquered Sun! He even speaks to you!" She points out.

"Well, yes, but you actually have a lot more experience in being a priestess than I do, and besides, uh, I'm not saying this to sound self-important, but I expect to be really busy at times, while a real priest must always be close to the- wait." You stop. "...How do you know that?"

"Well, the Unconquered Sun speaks to all Zeniths, right?"

You stare into those big, bright eyes of hers. Is she just assuming that because it's how it works for lesser gods, or does she know a lot more than she seems to at first glance?

"Uh. So. This buzzing noise I feel in my head is the prayer?"

"Buzzing noise?" She tilts her head sideways.

"You don't know about it?" You ask her.

"I've never been prayed to."

Well, she has a point. You relax a bit. Man, this little priestess somehow managed to have you more on edge than the elementally-empowered dancer assassin you just met.

A bit tired of being curiously groped by her, you "let one of your hands slip" and get some vengeance on her own breasts.

You try not to laugh, and fail. "Well. you were setting a mood, groping me like that."

"I was NOT g-g-groping!" She protests, still bright red. "I-i-i was m-m-m-m-merely EXAMINING the body of one of the Angels of the Sun! It w-w-was theological curiosity!"

She turns away from you. "A-and besides... I-i-i'm not worthy of... you."

"Why not?" You ask her.

"B-because...!" It's clear she's not ready to think of a solid reason.

"You know a lot of things. You're clearly a very good, very faithful priestess. What made you worship the Unconquered Sun? It's not... an easy task." You say, patting gently on your lap, inviting her to return.

It takes a while for her to do so. "...One day... I saw a dream."

"A dream." You reply.

"I have dreams sometimes." She says.

"...Well, everyone does."

"I... suppose."

"What did you see in this dream?"

"I was in a flower field. It was full of flowers, flowers everywhere, blooming under the sun." Her gaze gets unfocused and distant. "They were beautiful."

You wait for her to finish. "And?"

"That's it."

That seems like a bit too little to you, as far as life-defining choices go, but who are you to judge? Maybe it made a huge impression on her. After all, she IS completely decked in flowers as well.

"...Do you have a lot of these dreams?"

She nods.

"...I see. Thank you for dropping by, Pyre! It was great getting to finally meet you."

"No! The honor was all mine!" She says, hugging you. She seems to have gotten over that embarrassment pretty quick. "Thank you for this chance!"

"What do you mean, chance? You're head of my cult, right? We'll keep working together from now on!" You reply.

You don't think you've ever seen a lot of people with a face as happy as her right now.

"What- just call me Maka. What?"

"Maka?"

"Yes, what?"

She looks up at you with those bright eyes of hers. "...Does- if- er, d-did I upset you?"

"Oh, you mean the touching?" She... IS rather grabby. Even now. She's squeezing you like... like a kid holding on to a large plush toy or safety blanket for security and comfort. Making her feel safe.

"Touch away." You invite her with a smile. "I'm here for you."

"Really?" And that's the look of a kid with a new toy.

"Yes, just... sometimes, in public, it might not be terribly proper."

She nods. "I'll be careful! Thank you, Divine Maka!"

"I just told- whatever, it doesn't have a bad ring to it." You think about it. "Why not Queen? That's an actual title I have."

She blinks. "Because to my faith you are a Chosen of the Sun first and foremost."

She takes her theology seriously. "Mistress?"

"When in private?" She offers.

That really makes you want to put a collar around her neck with a chain and- ok. Stop there. Self-control. Self-control. Deep breath.

"...Alright. I have to meet other people, Spark... And I'm sure you have a lot of work to do with the cult."

"Now that I have the answers, yes!" She stands up from your lap, and again gets down on the floor and hugs your knees.

"...I told you to stop that."

"Sorry." She stands back up. "I'll be leaving now!"

"Best of luck." You follow her with your eyes as she leaves, picking up her flower-filled hat on the way out.

"Divine Maka." Tia giggles from her chair.

"Oh, shut up. It's nice to see people actually calling me nice things for once."

"I call you nice things in bed." She replies, almost sounding offended.

"You call me all sort of things in bed, it doesn't count." You reply. "You even called me Anathema in bed once."

"Did I." She replies, trying to remember. "...i'm sure you must've done something to deserve it."

Right, I understand. Personally, I would rather have a Regis segment in the future, once he's full Tiger Warrior. Having to do a gritty bit with an exceptional-but-still-mortal dude in deep cover or trying to rescue his superhuman patron? That would be badass.
>>
>>31541398
Holy shit, that would be so fucking badass.

Right? So far, 100% of this quest has been from the perspective of two of the most powerful superhumans in the world. Doing a segment where you truly exceptionally badass for a mortal, but still with all the normal mortal frailties and weaknesses would be a great new perspective for exploring the setting.

And it would be BADASS AS A MOTHERFUCKER.

I'm pretty sure his current stats are as follows:
>Dawn 1
>Zenith 1
>Night 2
>Twilight 0

>Physical 3

>>

His native skillset is roguish - we're adding in superhuman physical, resistance, tactics, combat, and raw command power.

He's going to CQC some motherfuckers.

So, yeah. I'm hoping that our next 'perspective' one-shot will be a fully Tiger Warrior Regis. Equal parts battle butler, Solid Snake, swashbuckler, and Ezio Auditore. He's nowhere near the level of a proper exalt, and will die like a punk bitch from a good stab wound - but that's what will make it extra badass.
>>
Rolled 2

>>31541511
>I wonder what his original fate out have been like if we hadn't rescued him. Nothing good I guess
He was starving to death before he stole our clothes. He was being stoned to death before we saved him from the crowd. And he was outcast from his community and hiding in the jungle when we took him on as our butler.

He owes us his life three times - or more - over, and knows it, and doesn't resent us for it.

That should tell you a lot.

As much as it's entirely understandable to resent owing someone your life, it's not exactly common. I can't imagine resentment would usually pop up this early on at any rate.
>>
>>31541669
It's more when you lord it over them that resentment happens. We've given him a lot of things he didn't have and are giving him a far better life than he would have had before.

Your third appointment for the day appears on the doorway: a man in simple clothes, seemingly a simple seaman carrying a leather bag and a well-forged sword at his belt, that Millian introduces as "Roan Denzik, of the Denzik Merchant Corporation".

The young man bows at you with the utmost respect before gesturing to the chair. "Might I be seated? I am not familiar with your Exaltation. Is there a protocol I'm not aware of?"

Well, he's polite. "Please, be seated. I'd like this to be an informal meeting." You sit as well.

You heard that he was a representative of the Denzik, but not that he was an actual family member. This man's surname is impressive.

The Denzik are probably one of the most successful independent (as in, not aligned with the Guild or Coral, the two major economic superpowers in the area) merchant groups. All based on one of the craziest ventures in Creation: thousands of seaworthy vessels tied together in a massive artificial island, driven by scavenged First-Age technology across the sea.

The Denzik, now more a vast alliance of clans and corporations than a single family or a single city, are famous for their risky business ventures they undertake liberally, their fair prices and business practices and their vast reach (Gem, a city as distant from the ocean as they come, traded many of its precious jewels with the Denzik merchants).

You take a second look a the individual in front of you: This humble-looking, soft-spoken, unassuming man has the weight of one of the largest venture capitals in Creation behind of him.

"I wasn't aware that a scion of the Denzik family wanted to meet me. If I had known, I would have met you sooner. My apologies." You say.

"Please, don't use words like "Scion". It makes me seem more important than I actually am." He lightly bows again to you. "And I must say that your beauty and charm are even greater than what the stories say."

"There are stories?" You reply, suitably surprised.

"Some." He concedes himself a small laugh. "Places like Denzik, where merchants, peddlers, sellers and buyers come and go are the beating heart of Creation's rumor mill."

"And what does the rumor mill say?"

"That you punched a Deathlord's flying battleship back in the sea, stole Queen Amata's heart, and vanquished the Prince of the Black Swamp. To begin with."

"I actually did none of those things, at least not in those terms." You inform him.

"I suspected as much." He smiles. "Oh, don't take it as an offense, lady Maka. It's more that all rumors are born from a seed of truth, but then inevitably outgrow it as they become bigger and bigger. I've long learned to trust them only up to a certain point. I'm still in the process of learning up to which point, though."

You both laugh politely.

"For instance." You almost hear a mechanical noise as the man enters in business mode. "Perhaps not by your sole hand, but the Prince of the Black Swamp was indeed defeated, right?"

"He was."

"And his former Wyldlands, now solid Creation, are legally owned by you now?"

You're not sure about the legal status of those lands, but you're pretty sure that they are yours, de facto if not the iure.

"They're mine."

"Then I have a business proposal for you, lady Maka. Hopefully the first of many, if you will be satisfied by us. Are you interested in hearing it?"
