You are Joshua Thirteen, UNAAF Special Forces Division Seven. A soldier of the highest degree, and have been fighting the war against the demons for the past eighty years. You were winning the battles, but losing the war. Even in the horrors of war, you built a life for yourself with a woman, Lauren, whom you had saved. But humanity was betrayed, you were betrayed. When you recovered, you found yourself in an unprecedented world, a backwards world living in fear of the demons you very nearly triumphed against.

But the strange world you’ve found yourself in is not without allies. The Dragon slumbers nearby. Your lesser demons seem to be scattered around the capitol city of Lyr, though they are resisting your contracts with them. You were just reunited with your younger sister Alice, another child of Special Forces Division Six, and she’s as energetic as always. And if anyone could survive the betrayal that incapacitated you, it would be your brother Matthew, he is surely somewhere in this country, waiting for you to find him.

You ventured through the capital city of Lyr with your sister, and learned more of the religion that has come to dominate the world in your absence, particularly of a foreboding tale of demon lords. The story might have relevance to the circumstances of your betrayal, but Alice can’t fill you in, Matt has yet to be found, and you can’t get your memories back until you find your demons. In the meantime, you need to make ends meet, and pay back your dues. And something tells you helping Sin will be more profitable to you than it seems.

The two of you have already left the brewery behind, leaving Alice to her playdate with Lucian. She bought you a set of interesting clothes. The under clothes are practical denim, but there are several sashes tied around it almost like robes yet they don’t interfere with movement. It certainly looks strange, but it’s much better than the acolyte robes. Additionally, she gave you broad bladed shortsword which is currently hanging from your hip.

The sun has already gone down, and she’s leading you through alleys in the slum. You can hear the ceramic chips in her purse clinking with every step, and you’re sure the local scum can hear them as well.

“There are a few dozen thieves lurking ahead. They’ll have a few above us in the windows and only make a token show of force on the ground. What are you planning to do about it?” You whisper to her as she continues on.

“Nothing.”

“So you mean to simply have me deal with them?” you ask as you put your hand on the handle of your sword.

“No, I’m going to do nothing because there’s nothing I need to do. I’m a local, I know most of the thieves, especially the ones around here. They get their booze from me, so they’re not going to rob me. They’re waiting for the big tickets anyways,” she explains as she confidently continues on. You shrug and stay on edge.

She continues on through several alleys, past dozens of demi-humans poorly concealing weapons. And none of them make any moves after recognizing her. At one point, she stops to exchange pleasantries with some kind of area boss, but he lets you both pass without harassment.

When you finally come to a warehouse still illuminated within, she stops before approaching the men guarding the entrance. She turns to you and holds out her arm. “Come then, you’re technically my date as well as my body guard.”

You sigh and take her arm. “Sometimes I feel like the entire world is conspiring against me. Then I remember it usually is,” you mumble as she leads you over to the men.

“Cynthia Smith, here to watch over my investments,” she explains to the men guarding the warehouse.

The glance between each other and look you over, particularly the blade that she’s trying to hide with her body. The four guards are poorly dressed, as if they are nothing more than drifters, but when their leader speaks up, even you can recognize the formality alien to the slums. “It is a pleasure to see you again Cyn. I would be more than happy to allow you entrance to our little corner of the woods. But you know that this is to be a private affair, just between friends. You’re not supposed to bring along such, crude muscle.”

“And I’m supposed to just be lonely for the night? I’m not allowed to bring company?” she asks as she leans her head on your shoulder. “And he’s not just anyone, he’s a foreign elf. I want to show him around town, see if I can’t convince him to stay.”

The lead guard glances back at the wolf like demi-human behind him, and gets a nod. “Well then,” he continues with a large but forced smile, “In that case I apologize. He is of course welcome as your guest. Enjoy yourself. One of the Queen’s advisors managed to procure us quite a treat for tonight’s entertainment. I hope you won’t miss it.”

“I’ll do my best to stick around then,” she answers as the men open the door for both of you. The two of you head inside and quickly descend a cement staircase, which doubles back several times, descending far lower than the warehouse should.

“Your name is Cynthia?”

“What did you think Cyn was short for?”

“Frankly, I just took it at face value after all the shit I’ve had to accept lately. Where are we by the way?”

“The arena,” she answers as you’re let onto a rusting catwalk above a large steel chamber. People are milling about the edges with servants running drinks between them. In the center is a fenced off pit filled with sand, you can smell the blood mixed in it. Numerous passages branch off from the main room like roots from a tree, and you can hear the echoes of more people beyond. This is part of the old infrastructure.

“So these are your investments then?” you ask as she slips off your arm and continues down the catwalk.

“No, not at all. Takes too much collateral with too much risk to manage a slave operation. My investments are with the Electors that come here for their entertainment. I make quite a bit of money convincing electors to change their votes. Have to keep the guards corrupt afterall.”

“Slaves?” you ask, looking down at the men and women lounging about with drinks in their hands and cigarettes on their lips, while others are running around to serve them.

“More or less. It’s not strictly legal, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t government sponsored. I’m sure you’ll have an opportunity to watch if you wish. The fights are very entertaining. I don’t know if you’d believe how much blood a demi-human can lose and keep fighting.”

“This place disgusts me already. Fighting for prize money is one thing, but slaves?” you ask as you both reach the ground floor of the chamber. You keep your eyes moving, watching for threats, but most of the people here aren’t even armed. Only the rich people have bodyguards, and they don’t seem keen fighting you. There’s a pickpocket running about, but that seems to be the only threat.

“I didn’t hire you for your opinions, only your looks. So why don’t you just stay quiet? I have business I’ll have to attend to in just a moment,” she asks, but she turns away without letting you answer. You follow behind her as she weaves through the crowds all the way to the wall. She’s heading towards a lift to the surface built into the wall of the room, judging by the quantity of goods down here, they might have even found a way to reactivate the thing.

Cyn walks straight up to a small group of men, two of which have pairs of bodyguards. The one without a bodyguard is a young man with a nervous tension in his posture. He’s talking as you approach, “-just hope someone can kill the damn thing.”

The portlier of his two companions laughs at that. “Then I think I’d be better off betting on the demon. I wonder what kind of odds we can get going on it? We could feed it some scum first, big and exciting old five on one fight to fatten the thing up before we bring out the good fighters. This is going to be better than the time we had them fight on Krah back.”

“Well if it isn’t the brewer,” the third man says as he sees the two of you approach.

“Good evening Elector Novak, Elector Cubierre, Advisor Orion. We have business to discuss, no?” Cyn asks.

“With the God of War coming to our city, we all can be sure that he’s going to use this opportunity to force Naaf policy on us. Did the three of you hear about the blood bath we had over the statues? The guards cut down half a dozen protestors, arrested a dozen more, and scattered the rest with various injuries,” Cyn explains as a servant brings a chair over to her. You notice one start to bring you a seat, but you wave him off, preferring to stand behind her.

“The peasants are practically ready to revolt the moment he steps foot in this city. What of it? You’re making more money than ever in these conditions,” Novak asks as he snuffs out his cigarette.

“Because I don’t want a civil war. We will lose,” she states. She lets her statement sink in, and the three men don’t respond. Scanning the crowd you notice that the area is starting to get more and more congested, the beginning of the games must be soon. And then you see a face you recognize, and a moment later Bartolome sees you as well, and his face lights up. To your dismay, he quickly starts pushing through the crowd to approach you.

“You sound very confident in that, but we all know that the only reason we lost the war was because of their undefeatable Brigadier. We could win our independence back easily if we could eliminate him, or bring him to our side somehow,” Orion responds.

“You may have the Queen’s ear boy, but you have a loose tongue,” Novak growls. Orion instinctively glances over his shoulders to check for people listening in, but is sloppy. Even if someone was listening, they would have hidden themselves.

“Oh the night is young, can’t we talk about this after a few games and a few more drinks?” Cubiere pleads just before Bartolome reaches you.

“My friend Joshua! So good to see you again! And you are in such esteemed company! Bartolome of LeMonte, at your services my lords. Here for the games I hope, not just business. If you’re interested, I have a number of fighters that I can assure you will be excellent bouts and sure things to bet on,” he exclaims, quickly pushing past you to speak with the three lords.

“And I was under the impression you didn’t have friends,” Cyn says. You glare at her and she laughs.

“Take him away, we don’t have time for petty gamblers,” Novak orders, shooing you away.

“Again, my apologies,” you say as you start pulling Bartolome away.

“Oh, but I’m not just any gambler! I am a man of high regard I’ll have you know!” Bartolome starts to protest before you tank him off his feet and around a corner where you’re still close enough to watch for threats.

“A little ambitious of you, don’t you think?”

“Oh, but a true man must know when to grab hold of opportunity. They’ll remember me. Now I just have to have my fighters win for me and I’ll walk out fat with marks. Soon enough they’ll have to work with me,” he responds. “But I wish you would have been a bit more dignified with me, Mr. Thirteen. That may have hurt my reputation a bit.”

“I thought you were a lawyer or something, why are you here?”

“Oh, I am. I just negotiate the contracts between the destitute and those who want entertainment. This is big business you know.”

“So, you’re a slaver.”

“Not by that name, but I’ve been called it before. I make no effort to hide what I do when I’m here. Only scoundrels and rogues would try to hide their employment when so surrounded by it. By your presence here you must be accepting of it. Though I must ask. Why are you with Ms. Smith? I know serial killers more trustworthy than her. She’s sold out more people than I have!”

I know you said it was wolves, but Bartolome of LeMonte is no fool. You killed a demon. And I know what you are. Your kind don’t typically bother themselves with the monsters that stalk the land, which must mean you have an axe to grind.”

“If you have a point, get to it, rather than bombarding me with conjecture.”

“You might not have heard, but there’s going to be a demon in the arena tonight. It’s the main event, a beast so great it can slaughter dozens of men and feast on their corpses. Now, I want to make money, and I’m sure you don’t want to watch men and demi-humans needlessly die. What say you and I come to an agreement? And even better still, it’ll keep you away from that betraying bitch who hired you,” Bartolome asks eagerly.

You glance back towards Cyn. You lost track of their conversation, but if someone has gotten close to her with an intent to harm, they’d have to be incredibly skilled. Whether her negotiations are going well is another matter, but none of your business.

OP, I'm curious. Why exactly do you take only the first roll?
>>
“I might be interested, this demon has caught my attention. But you’ll have to tell me everything you can about it,” you answer, keeping one eye on Cyn.

“Scrupulous. The demon is a vulturous bird that the palace has kept hidden beneath the dungeons for years. The royal family has many secrets you see, and this is one of them that they couldn’t keep. The prisoners that didn’t get fed to it could hear the screaming and squelching, gnashing and splashing as it ripped apart those unfortunate enough to be fed to it. And the guards endorsed it. It was a punishment worse than death, reserved for the truly evil. But one wonders why they would keep such an affront to their own oaths, after all, Lyr is a theocracy. Lady Lyanna, our Queen, is the head of our faith. The Dragon speaks directly to her; surely he would have protested to such an act. Did he not know? Did he not mind? Or did she not listen to him?”

“It matters little, because she was betrayed, and the demon has been brought here tonight, to be slaughtered. But a demon is a demon, and the people here want a blood bath, not the Dragon’s favor. The arena will host a number of preliminary fights, to get the crowd going and the drinks flowing, and then people will start challenging the demon. We may even see a noble or two who demands his right to slay the monster, so we may find ourselves a few nobles short by the time the sun rises. But we don’t need to see all these fine fighters die, because you’re a man who can kill it,” Bartolome explains.

“It was Advisor Orion that brought it here, wasn’t it?” you ask.

“Tis the rumor, yes. You’re a sharp man Mr. Thirteen,” the slave contractor responds.

1/2
>>
You glance over at the walls surrounding the arena. They’re supported chain link fences, so the crowd doesn’t have to rise above the fight to see it. Even still, several platforms are erected nearby for viewing. And you can see that a chain dome has been hastily built over top, so it can’t fly away.

“How did he get it here?”

“I believe you’ll have to ask him that.”

There is no reason not to. When rolling the important thing is the chance of success and failure on various degrees. Taking only one roll, it is much more easier to calculate the chances. If you are not using a existing, tried and balanced system it is actually better than taking 2-3 rolls since it is much more harder to arrange DCs then.

If it is our demon we might think of it. It is almost definitely is.

If it is, how can we restore our contract with it and regain our power Gabriel? Do we have to fight it? Can we talk to it? If they somehow killed it, what would happen then?
>>
>>31495205
That's a "problem" from the QM, not the system

>>31495217
IF it is your demon, you'd have to speak with it and determine how it will agree to resume giving you power. If it gets killed, you'll lose all the power it was withholding, and according to Alice, it will slowly kill you.
>>
>>31495205
It is not anything you can agree or refuse, honestly. It is just mathematics. Even if you take 1 roll or 3 or 7 or 99, what matters is the probability. Taking just one just make it easier to calculate the chances.
>>
>>31495281
Probability curves matter, which is why you get dice pool systems.

One die gets you a flat probability curve, anything more and you approach a bell curve.
>>
>>31495272
>If it gets killed, you'll lose all the power it was withholding, and according to Alice, it will slowly kill you.
Well, that's not nice.
Then i guess we all agree we'll make an agreement with it tonight and make sure it doesn't end up dead. If that doesn't go well with Cyn's plans, that's just too bad but she is a big girl.
>>
>>31495324
there's nothing wrong with an even distribution pattern. Bellcurves are just common, not strictly superior.
>>
>>31495324
Thats why i said "If you are not using a existing, tried and balanced system". Because there is no way your average QM is taking curves into account and picking varying degrees of success DCs according to it otherwise. They just pick what they "feel" like right.

“I’ll think about it, but I agreed to be a bodyguard before this, so I have to finish with that first,” you explain as you start walking back.

Bartolome sighs. “As you will Mr. Thirteen, I can’t force you to face down a demon. But I truly hope you’ll agree, there would be much to gain for both of us in this deal. Just think of how renowned you’d be if you were proceeded by rumors of slaying demons. Well, in some circles at least.”

You nod and return to Cyn, leaving the dejected man to his own devices. “Nice of you to return to us Mr. Thirteen,” Novak says as you take your place behind Cyn once again.

“I wasn’t far, and it seemed that my friend’s presence was bothering you,” you answer, staring the old man down. He reminds you of your superiors back in the army, a man who’s been in power longer than he’s been ordered around, and has nearly forgotten what it was like. But he doesn’t have the look of fear that the military always had.

“You know, you have a very interesting last name,” Novak continues.

“That is what they call me nowadays.”

Novak grins. “Now you see, that confuses me. We overheard Bartolome, and unless you merely lied to him, you claim that your surname is Thirteen. We all should know that that numbers aren’t surnames. Indeed, to the commoner, it appears a ludicrous lie. But you see, I too am an elf. Third Generation and head of my household. Patrick Cubiere is also an elf, but he proved himself on his own worth, he’s just a thirty-two after all.”

Your eyes narrow and Novak notices. Thirty-Two was Paul’s number. “So you certainly know the meaning behind our true surnames. We don’t talk about them much anymore, cross marriages between the houses have kind of polluted the gene pool and all that; so we abandoned them a few decades ago. But back when I was a child, there were thirty-twos, forty-twos, fifty-sevens, and thirty-fives. But I’ve never heard of a Thirteen before. And I would have heard if someone else had met one. So tell me Mr. Thirteen, if you are in fact an elf, just how old are you?”

“Don’t know, I kind of lost track at some point, but it’s a hell of a lot longer than you,” you answer.

“Just where have you been holed up then? You’re certainly not a citizen of Lyr, the haven of elves. Are you from Naaf? They say the God of War is an elf, that he wins every fight because he’s fought so many hundreds of battles there’s nothing he hasn’t faced before. Maybe you hid in the Republic? Where all of our exiled friends went.”

“If only you knew.”

“Next you’ll tell me you’re from outside the Dragon’s Realm, that you were living with the demons this whole time. Regardless, you’re not her friend then, she’s just paying you. An elf wouldn’t stoop to helping a genetic freak like her. And I’m afraid I can’t condone you slumming around with the rats who think they’re people,” Novak says as he leans back in his chair.

The announcer for the tournament starts shouting through some kind of rudimentary amplifier, calling for quiet so he can announce the opening matches. The crowd behind you hollers and starts pressing towards the sand pit, betting certificates in hand. Certain no one will break from the pack to approach, you turn back to Novak. “I’m not sure what you have to say about the matter in the least.”

“Well, I’m not sure it’s my place to stop you from playing with these disgusting creatures in general, but I will have to stop you from playing with this one,” he says, waving at Cyn. She’s gripping the edge of her seat in her hands with white knuckles, but her face is still calm. “If she’s paying you, I’ll cover your loses. It’s the least I can do for a fellow elf. Now, men,” he says, turning towards his bodyguards. “Arrest this traitor.”

Both of them pull out their swords, and Cyn jumps to her feet. She steps back and grabs hold of your clothes, watching as the men circle around for her.

“Sorry Novak, but I have a deal to keep her safe this evening, in return for the kindness she showed me. It’s more than just money. We can talk more when the evening’s over, but if you’d like your men to survive, I’d have them stand down,” you say as you put your hand on the handle of your sword.

“I don’t want you to stand opposed to me Mr. Thirteen. You intrigue me greatly, and I’d prefer it if we were on good terms. We elves shouldn’t fight amongst each other, there’s few enough of us as it is. But you are standing behind a woman who would use assassination as a tool of oppression to profit in the sale of weapons.”

“As if you didn’t kill half your opposition to get the power you hold now,” Cyn spits at him.

“If I did, I was certainly intelligent enough to not involve people above my own weight class. Now, guards, please,” Novak says as he stands up and steps away from you. Orion does the same, while Cubiere seems too lazy to move.

You pull out your blade and stretch the muscles in your shoulders. This blade is far superior to the old piece that you took from Lucian, a good blade to kill men with. You note that the two men approaching you seem confident, if uncertain. But they’re willing to fight you and might even be good at it.

Welcome to our alien visitors. Hopefully as you acquire more familiarity with humans things will start to make more sense.

Then you hear something scream. Not a human, not a demi-human nor an animal, but a demon. A magpie at that, crying for help. The people around you jump in surprise, obviously thinking it’s trying to attack and escape. Even in captivity, they fear it. But the scream carries with it the echoes of its presence. That’s your magpie, the one you’re contracted with. It must have noticed you when you prepared yourself to fight, and they’re trying to kill it tonight. You can’t let that happen.

Something scrapes against your chest and you look back at the gathering before you. One of the guards lunged at you when the demon screamed. Cyn jumped away, but you weren’t paying attention, and he hit you across the chest, slicing open the first few layers of muscle. “Ow,” you state before you grit your teeth and lop his head off.

“Dragon’s Blood! What the hell are you?” Novak shouts as Cyn starts sprinting through the crowd.

“In a bad position,” you say, glancing back in the direction of your magpie.

>Generally, when I want to get on someone's good side, I don't point at the people they're with and say "hey, those guys are shit."

"Things happened, she hired me as a bodyguard."

This is what Joshua said. There is nothing that Bartolome could take to assume that he and Cynthia already knew each other. For all Lawyer Guy knows, he met Joshua before Cynthia did, and that is exactly what happened.

Beyond that, Bartolome may act like a buffoon, but he probably doesn't trust anyone here, and expects us not to either. What he's trying to do is feed our paranoia of Cynthia (and hopefully not him).

Since when is it about trusting Cynthia? We made a deal with her, we're keeping our word. Who or what she is doesn't matter, since we've made our deal. We're going to follow through with it.

>They already know we can betray them. They're the type of people who assume betrayal from all fronts.

True, but betraying Cynthia now means that we also look like someone who breaks deals at the drop of a hat. Or coin.

If we want to make them allies, then we approach them afterwards. If we haven't killed them, or alienated them, or whatever.
>>
>>31497218
THIS. We have to look like someone who keeps his word.
>>
>>31497216
>people don't make friends with other people by insulting their current friends

1.he's not trying to make friends, he's looking for a business deal

>>31497341
1.You don't make business deals by insulting friends of the person you're trying to deal with.
2. Bartolome has no circle, and he's not dropping hints that he's cooler. In fact, he's saying that he's bad but she's even worse. Also this is generally done after you establish a bit more rapport that Bartolome currently has with us. Or a lot more.
>>
>>31497402
>In that situation it's no more than he would expect from us. We surprised him by not backing down, and now he probably thinks we're an idiot.
And he also knows why we didn't back down. The shit combat roll revealed more than most of the players wanted to, but oh well.

He overestimates his rapport with us.
>>
>>31497402
>1.You don't make business deals by insulting friends of the person you're trying to deal with.

You do in fact make business deals by telling people the entities they currently have a contract with are worse than you for some reason. Like you build gadget at half the price, or your distribution network is better. Or they have chronic backstab disorder. Something.

>1. So he both thinks less of us and knows more about us than we want him to now. Remind me again why you think you're right and I'm wrong?

Okay.

One, he now realizes that we can probably rip apart his bodyguards with our bare hands. That's why we didn't back down when confronted with multiple armed men.

Two, the terrible combat roll made it so that instead of doing something badass that demonstrated we were easily capable of wrecking his shit, we got slashed across the chest. We ignored it, which also looks pretty hardcore, but revealing that much of our superhuman power wasn't in the plan.
